John Kramer’s Physical Description

John is over seven feet tall and is a mix of metal and muscle. His skin is s pale blue, his thick salt-and-pepper hair hides under a wool cap, and his robotic limbs and jaw are a matte dark grey. Having lost much of body when he dies, John’s arms, legs, pelvis and much of his spine were replaced with cybernetic prosthesis. Peppered with cyber implants and broken by dark magicks, John has a fractured, though mending mind. This is evident in his deliberate speech and glowing mismatched eyes. He prefers to dress in clothing suitable for someone living in the wilderness. Over all of it, however, he wears his large poncho, hood hiding his face in shadow. In allied company, the hood is folded over and the poncho is drawn back into a cloak. Among friend it is removed entirely. His massive strength tends toward him volunteering to be pack mule, often carrying a comical amount of gear and cases on his back. Personally, John is kind and seeks simple ways to brighten someone’s day. He is never closer to the man he once was than when fishing, felling a tree, or telling stories by a campfire. He understands how terrifying he still is and is content with waiting just outside of town until the folk what are good with words explain his lot. The hold the school bell has over him is yet to be understood. If he is given it by the wielder, he will simply stare at it until it is reclaimed by the wielder.

John Kramer Backstory-The Fall

The year is 1907 in the town of Silver Spring Colorado. The world is a touch different than our own was at that time. Magic is highly regulated by most governments and has been for several hundred years across the world. In the past 50 years, however, the scale, power, and diversity of spells has massive grown.

Silver Spring is a small riverside dot of humanity amidst the rolling hills and thrush greenery of Colorado. The glittering waters the flowing past the farming community have allowed logging to replace the exhausted silver mines. This brought back much stability to a town that lost many sons and daughters to the War of Borders that ended in 1898 after igniting 4 years earlier. It was the first conflict where all factions had standardized military use of magic. Most of the fighting was done by Exiles: soldiers implanted with dangerous magic to augment naturally gifted abilities. None came back from the war and it is rumored that the Governments had them executed. While far away from the Borders themselves, Silver Spring still felt the attrition of war. However, that has become a memory for most, though some hold them heavier than others.

John Kramer is a timberjack, a freelance logger and a damn good one. Always a smile on his beard, sweat on his brow, and a bundle on steel and wood on his shoulders. John fought in the war, a trench-runner, and would rather not speak to the horrors he saw. Happy to have a kind addition to the community, all are happy to oblige his privacy. His greatest advocate, however, is the schoolmarm Ms. Marie Blueweather. While she and her late husband were married only a day before he left to the war, she still understands the burden it lays on those that survive.

On a bright morning early in the summer, a strange carven rolled into town. Their leader was a woman man of yellow eyes and jumbled teeth. His weathered hat and sun-bleached long coat revealed a man no stranger to long and hard days in the sun. The assortment of shady eyes and twitchy fingers of his posse revealed him as no stranger to the darker element. They walked into the Broken Barrel Bar and ordered a round. They had loudly chugged through half their pints when John walked in looking like a dead horse and smiling like a kid. His latest haul was a goodin’ and the next round was on him.

The man in the faded long coat stopped drinking and stared at the timberjack. He saw something no one else did. He saw what John saw in the war. He saw the cruel and hidden truths about what the G-men did to him. He saw john’s deepest, darkest secret. Feeling an electric chill on his back, John turned and saw that someone finally saw him too. John’s smile fell and the room went silent.
Explaining the no one wanted trouble, the deputy walked up and asked the stranger and his crew to finish his round. Ignoring the lawman, the stranger called out to his gang and they all walked outside. Their wild eyes raked across John as they passed. The timberjack was quite for some time before walking out to meet them in the dirt street. The stranger had been shouting an announcement. He was explaining why no Exiles made it back from the war. Their enchantments made them vulnerable to a new type of magic. It enslaved them as mindless killers for the most talented sorcerer. The Government had them executed to prevent a second war from ensuing. He then pointed a sun-tanned finger at john and exclaimed that a few managed to escape.

He proposed a deal. Give up the Exile and no one in the town would get hurt. He then demonstrated himself as a talented sorcerer by thrusting a hand towards a nearby horse, splitting it with a flash of light. The gasps and shrieks faded, leaving only a child’s crying in the air. John spoke, saying they would need to make such a choice, as he would go of his own volition. They man invited John into his auto carriage and as he walked toward it, he caught a sweep of yellow in the side of his eyes. John turned to see Ms. Blueweather, hands over her mouth and tears on her check. He looked at her for an eternity before hanging his head and stepping into the steam-belching carriage. Irons were slapped on his wrists and hands holding strange device were waved all over him. As they drove out of town, he could only think of all the jokes he told in that bar, the people he carried home, and of the smiles he and Ms. Blueweather shared in their few moments alone. Then he heard the school bell.

He heard it across the river every morning as he was resting a spell for breakfast after working since before daybreak. He would look across the babbling water and see dots of youngins running up to a beautiful brushstroke of yellow. This time it sounded…wrong. With was erratic, hasty, and at the wrong time of day. Something was wrong. He looked up at the stranger and his widening jumble-toothed smile and hateful yellow eyes. He lied. The people weren’t safe.

There was so much tied into the arcane might swirling in John’s chest: guilt, regret, fear. However, for the first time since being tossed on a field and told to kill everyone in the buildings ahead, he felt hatred. Hatred, was the key.

John was standing at the dock, unsure of how he got there. In oak-like arm swung the crumpled body of the stranger, his lifeless boots slapping blood into the river. John let go and turned around to see all the stranger’s posse lay scattered across a town. They were people without pieces and pieces without people strewn across wounded buildings amongst plumes of smoke. He remembered that he had killed all of them. The people of the town slowly approached the dock, sealing John away from the town he loved so much.

They began to yell horrible, true things. They shook weapons in the air and demanded he leave. Some argued that he should be killed there and then. Amidst the fury, Ms. Blueweather bolted out of the crowd and ran to John. She stood between him and the now silent mob. She screamed out all the things he did for them. All the joy and support he brought since he came so many harvests ago. The mob began to calm back into the people of Silver Spring. Then a building collapsed, startling someone holding a rifle. A blossom of red began to grow out of Ms. Blueweather’s yellow dress.

Her legs folded and John caught her. She weakly felt at his face, unable to voice how happy she was to finally feel his strong arms around her. They were together at last, and at the last. A smile, and then her hand fell. The world fell silent save for the rambling river, and John’s sobs. The people were unsure what to do, and then John’s eyes went dark, just like before the massacre. The shot rang out, but John still stood up. He began to walk forward, and then another shot. He continued forward through a storm of gunfire. After seven steps, he finally fell to his blood-soaked knees with a thunderous boom. His massive frame tiled over, and John vanished to the bottom of the river.

The people of Silver Spring vowed never to speak of the event again. Ms. Blueweather was buried in the town cemetery, her death blamed on a bandit attack. John’s body was found once, mostly buried my pushed by the current of the river. The town council thought it best just to leave him there and nature handle the burial. Ms. Blueweather’s brother came seeking real answers, but was met with a well-rehearsed story of the attack by a sorcerer and his bandits on the town. The man from his sister’s letters was told off as a romantic conjuring of a war-widow. Despite their vow, whispers still linger of The Timberjack of Silver Spring. For several generations, it lingered, leaving the logging trade to the bravest or drunkest of the town. Now a backwater village in an age of technology and honed arcane practice, another stranger visits Silver Spring.

The Rise

One early summer evening two women, a medical mage and a technomancer, flew in. Always leery of strangers, the town closed most of its fronts early and their shutters. They were polite, well-spoken, and needlessly hated. In the dead of the night, the need found its home. The two snuck out, advanced gear in tow. Still made of local wood, they stepped onto the rickety dock and dropped a large crate into the churning water. It unfolded into a marine automaton and dove down in search of its prize. After an hour, it succeeded. The body was retrieved, loaded onto their vehicle, and they flew off into the night.

Most of what was once john Kramer now lay on a surgical table. Robotic arms canned the body, confirming the presence of the illegal Exile enchantment. The medi-mage stepped up with her sister and both Doctors Blueweather began their work. The rotted away limbs were replaced with military grade cybernetics, part of his damaged brain was also replaced with the network needed to control the new body. Days of sleepless work driven by stim injections and caffeine finally bore fruit when the forever black screen finally pinging with a bio-electric aura. Despite being arguably alive, John remained still. Then a flash of brilliance from the twins.

Several photographs of their great-great-aunt’s school house were scanned into the machining grid. Its metal tendrils began to assemble the long thin cone of the school bell of Silver Springs. Each holding it with one hand, the chime rung out and The Timberjack woke. It looked at the soft smile and bright eyes of Ms. Blueweather, now twice as many. They spoke his name and once again he was reunited with her.

Images of strangers flickered untouchable, but before his electronic eye. The twins explained that these were bad people and wanted to hurt them. John’s unmoving blood began to boil. They show him the gifts they gave him to assist him end those bad people. They each kissed him on the check and the Timberjack stepped out their embrace and into legend.

Freedom and Exile

They lied to him. They shred the blood of his beloved, but that was all. He was used to people. Though they were not all innocent, but none deserved what he did to them. The bell rang in hands of the twins over and over, but it only fueled Johns rage against them. They ran, no longer able to control the monster they created. They were back where it began, just upriver of Silver Spring they ran to the edge of an old dock. The cold water glinted madly in in the moonlight and John lumbered his way forward. They only had one choice and leapt into the water, the cold stabbing the air from their lungs. John looked at his damaged cybernetics and knew he would only sink if he dove in after them. Thus, he ran.

The Timberjack bolted down river, each stomp leaving a small crater in his wake. He ran faster than his precious river, past the wicked women that twisted him like the military brass centuries ago. He zoomed across the covered bridge as they sloshed past helpless, but out of reach. John continued along the bank, though not towards the approaching Silver Spring. He made for the lumber camp that lie just before it.

Tearing off the door to the control room his hands flipped switches and pressed button. The engines of the camp roared to life, lights scanning the river and huge claws reaching out. A water-mesh barrier snapped up, corralling the screaming sisters into the funnel. The roller along the barrier pushed the twins towards the camp, snapping bones and tearing off flesh from their grasping hands. In a series of excruciating moments, they were tossed onto wet metal, shoved through a planer and stripped of their skin. Seeing their bare flesh just as the pain set in, they inhaled for a united scream. The only sound was that saw swinging down to split the twins in twain. The cruel Blueweather sister gone, the curse of The Timberjack ended. However, John did not.

John’s Exile magic kept him going, now alone in the abandoned town of Silver Spring. He managed to mostly fix himself and returned to his life as a logger. His mind was still fractured and was unsure of how many years he had passed, though he did not really care. He worked the forest and slowly scavenged book reading to Ms. Blueweather’s grave. He kept at his simple, pleasant existence even after the sky changed, unaware that he was no longer in his Colorado. Then the explorers came with smile like Marie’s and hearts free of malice. He told them his story as best he could. In turn, they explained where he was as best they could. He was invited to join their Legion of people dedicated to helping others. After much thought, he decided to forge a new life in the new world and joined the Tomorrow Legion.
