Background

Adam looked up at the clouds drifting across a clear blue sky and chuckled softly to himself as he contemplated the irony of his situation. He could remember as if it were yesterday the first time he heard the legendary Erin Tarn speak and knew that he too wanted to spend his life in the pursuit of knowledge. He spent the next several years absorbing whatever scraps of knowledge he could. First there was the apprenticeship under the little man he still only knew as Mole. Strange though he might have been, Mole had taught him everything he knew about computers including how to access that which other might wish to remain hidden.

It did not take long, however, for Adam to realize that if he wanted to discover secrets past and present he would have to ferret them out in person. To that end he began to search out any news that told of any scientific expedition being formed in the hope that he could join in whatever capacity he could. To get in on his first expedition he ended up signing on with the merc company that had provided the security for the trip. As a trainee the pay was minimal and the drill relentless. It wasn’t all bad, however, since between guard shifts, practice drills and the odd battle with bandits and critters of all sorts there had still been time for study and (more importantly) observation of the science team as they plied their trade.

By the time his second tour with the merc company had come to an end Adam had gotten to know a number of scholars of greater and lesser repute and even managed to secure for himself a position as research assistant for an archaeological expedition heading to the Southwest of the old American Empire. By the time he had been on his fifth expedition he was a full researcher on the team proper and by the eighth he was forming and leading his own expedition. By that time, he had covered the greater part of the land once known as the United States and Canada and explored significant sections of both the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines. He had once even ventured south of the Rio Grande and lived to tell the tale though the occasional nightmare still haunted his dreams. Adam frowned at that thought and made a note to encrypt his files related to that expedition. Knowledge that one is not ready to accept is worse than ignorance and most were not ready to know about the horrors that lay to the south.

The sun came out from behind the clouds and its warmth reminding him again how thirsty he was. Once again, his thoughts turned to the irony of his situation. All the years he spent risking his life for the pursuit of knowledge and here he was probably going to die because he agreed to be a school teacher of all things! The deal had started off well enough, the town leaders agreed to provide him room and board as well as access to the town’s communication facilities and in return he agreed to act as the town’s school teacher as well as complete the training of the previous teacher’s apprentice. The girl had a good head on her shoulders and only needed a little seasoning to take over. At the time a six-month break to relax and start his first book seemed ideal. Besides, he mused, what’s the good of accumulating knowledge if it never got passed on, anyway?

Sudden anger washed through Adam and for what was probably the twentieth time he pushed futilely at the beams trapping his legs until the pain forced him to stop. Laying back panting he once again chided himself for wasting energy he did not have to spare on an effort he knew was doomed to failure. Closing his eyes, he could see that day’s events unfolding as if they were happening all over again. The day’s lessons had nearly been completed and the children had been anxious to enjoy the spring day. There wouldn’t have been too many more days like that before their afternoons would be consumed with the season’s planting. It was then the first explosion came out of nowhere like a thunderbolt from a clear sky turning the town hall in a flaming ruin.

The explosion still ringing in his ears Adam saw the first robot stepped from the forest, chain guns raving destruction and Adam’s first thought of relief that it was not CS forces died nearly stillborn. He might not need to fear being arrested by CS forces but whoever they were obviously had no concern about innocent bystanders. Fortunately, the apprentice teacher had been on the ball that day and had the kids moving towards the trap door and the escape tunnel beyond almost before the debris from the explosion had finished falling to earth. While she saw to their charges, Adam began to pick up desks and hurled them bodily towards the doorway, forming a crude barricade for all the good it would do. He had just turned to see that the girl had all the children into the tunnel and had followed them in when the missile came streaking in out of nowhere, turning his world white then quickly fading to grey.

When Adam came to he awoke to darkness and for several moments could not recall where he was or why he was laying on the ground. As the memories of the attack returned he realized that he lay among the ruins of the schoolhouse, or rather he lay under the remains of the schoolhouse. It was a miracle he was still alive though, as he realized how thoroughly trapped he was, it was a pretty lousy miracle as miracles go. If someone didn’t come along to rescue him his choices were either die of thirst or be eaten by the first scavenger that inevitably showed up following slaughters of this type.

Six days passed and while an afternoon rain shower that passed through a few days back might have reduced the immediate danger of death by dehydration the ever-present prospect of becoming something’s lunch didn’t exactly raise his spirits. It was then that Adam heard the rumble of an engine and the distinctive thud of walking armor rising from the distance and he realized he was saved. Ok, saved might be a little strong, he thought, but at this point a clean execution is a few steps up from his current situation. As it turns out death was not to be in the cards for one Professor Adam Radecliffe. Well, at least not today anyway. Drawn by his hoarse shouts the Tomorrow Legion relief force quickly zeroed in on his location. This miracle had not turned out so bad after all Adam thought as they pulled him from the rubble.

While Adam was disheartened to learn that there had been no other survivors found in the town he was glad to learn several townspeople, including the schoolchildren, had managed to evade capture and had been picked up by patrols out of Castle Refuge. The team dispatched to the town had not expected to find survivors after so long and had only come to survey the damage which, as it turned out, was near total. What the raiders had not destroyed they had stolen and most of the town had been stripped clean of valuables. Fortunately, most of Adam's belongings had escaped notice by virtue of being concealed under the rubble that had once been his quarters. Gathering together his belongings Adam accompanies the Tomorrow Legion back to Castle Refuge where he intends to offer what services he can to his benefactors.

  • Designed and sold by the Northern Gun Corporation, this is a fairly common starting item for anyone roaming the wilds. It contains just about everything needed for basic survival. (30 lb, 3,000 credits)
  • One two-person tent, insulated against up to −40 degrees Fahrenheit. It has water collection capabilities, capturing ambient humidity and evaporating water from occupants, thus extending water supplies by 20%.
  • One sleeping bag, also insulated.
  • One flashlight, with a concealed pocket knife. Miniaturized solar panels give it near-infinite operation under typical conditions.
  • One biometric compass/inertial mapper.   • One climbing kit with 30 feet of lightweight cord, a pair of climbing gloves, four ceramic spikes, and a small mallet.
  • One bar of soap and a sterilized cloth.
  • One canteen.
  • Two weeks worth of minimal sustenance survival rations in sealed pouches.

Read up on the Linquist edge on the Pinnacle forums and edited my skills to reflect that. If there were a FAQ deity his name would be Clint. :D

Technically I have two language slots left so any suggestions on other languages that might be available? I thought about adding latin. As a scholar there would be a lot of texts from even the Golden age that would at least have latin references not to mention even older texts. Maybe a golden age language like Russian or French that no longer exists in the modern Rifts world?

Also tweaking my knowledge skills a bit more then I think I'll be good barring any feedback.

Actually French does exist in the modern Rifts world - they speak it in Free Quebec and Iron Heart (yes I know they say Euro in the book - it's French AND Euro). There also languages like Demogogian (the language of gargoyles and other sub-demons/demons). Note Techno-can is literate only. It's strictly a written (almost a computer) language. Plus the Native American tribes have their own languages, as do other d-bees. Plus Greek is known by True Atlanteans (considered native).

Mechanically everything looks alright to me. Background is good though my preference is to always build in any HJ rolls to explain them.
