Revision to the Welcome language

Post by Tribe of One »

Lloyd's call for reviews on the Palladium site, and this review in particular, got me thinking about some language that might be worth adding to the site. This reviewer isn't the first one to bring up the rather, uh, authoritarian, character creation process on EU, and I'm afraid that reputation bleeds over onto us -- when I tried to do a little recruiting recently on the Paizo PbP board, that was the first thing people associated with the site.

I don't think it's a fair representation of how we operate, so I think it's worthwhile being very clear that things work differently here and folks are encouraged to create an account and noodle around (and create their own damn characters.)

I'd suggest adding a paragraph to the Character Creation thread in the Welcome forum:

"Once you have an idea, create an account and reach out to our admin via IM to discuss. All accounts must be registered with your character's name. Please no "l33t-speak" or other nonsensical account names, they will not be kept. Your account name should be the same as that which your character will use in conversation with the other players on-site. After you register your account, you should receive an e-mail by which you will activate the account.

If this is your first account for the site, don't worry if your idea is still unclear or you think you might change the concept. Those details and even your account name can all be revised as needed as your plans firm up. To get started, just choose a username that abides by the rules above and hop into the Character Creation forums, where existing players and GMs will be happy to help.

Controversial Concepts (Young, Bloodthirsty, etc): Regarding these Hindrances ... ."

Good idea. Maybe also add a link to the Community Hangout to that paragraph?

That's a good idea RE linking to the Hangout. Also, on review, I think I'd also cut this bit:

"Once you have an idea, create an account and reach out to our admin via IM to discuss."

I think that hearkens back to the EU way, and doesn't reflect how things work in practice here.

Once my review has been approved and I can access it again I'll add a bit about the character creation process there too. I think the simple fact that you can change the name of your account once you figure out just what your character is going to be pretty much alleviates that issue. I don't play on the EU side so I don't know if they are stricter over there.

This is a great idea.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!
