Showdown Sidekicks Yes or No?

Post by Ndreare »

So I have been asked by 4 people so far to eliminate Sidekicks from the Showdown.

Please only vote if you are going to participate.

Debate away.

  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

You are un able to apply the full value of the edge in a pvp match. This will not fly and you should cancel the tourney if allowed. Personally I find pvp distasteful. I get you want to do whose IF reigns surpreme, but by the fact it has to be decided by a pvp grudge match should make everyone pause and consider alternative options.

Take my vote or don't I will not be participating in the current format.

I vote "no", but with the caveat that I could be talked into a Robot Armor pilot getting a co-pilot. I'm a little squishier on that point.

But otherwise, I am against. It feels like a required edge for the competition unless you want to end up with a solo character stuck in a team fight.

I don't plan on using a Sidekick but I'd like them included, just so there's more variety of viable builds in the mix.

Sidekicks are not mirror images of the main character. RA pilot has a sidekick and the RA pilot gets shaken, the sidekick can operate the RA providing an opportunity for the pilot to come back on line.

If the sidekicks step away from the support role, then we head right into army on army, which this event should not be.

I'm curious why you voted "yes" here? Your comment sounds like a "no" vote.

Not trying to convince you one way or the other (I don't have anything new to add); just curious.

This contest has a strong RAW bias. The sidekick and followers are RAW. If those turn out to be the uber arena edges we learn something. If they don’t we learn something too. My only caveat is that following a round the should not refresh. Sidekicks die for good. Followers die for good unless replaced. I especially like that idea because it could lead to follower stealing to replenish the ranks.

I’m not using followers or sidekick however.

I was going to abstain but the fact is if this is to see which IF is boss in one on one action then adding a sidekick with an AB to shore up a non-AB IF seems counter intuitive to me. I will add, however, that an IF with a vehicle (basically Operator and Robot Armor Pilot) should have an allied extra to satisfy crew requirements. Either that or just declare that crew requirements are satisfied for the purposes of this match and be done with it.

I'm another no vote. I think with this in them in the mix, Sidekicked characters will completely dominate the match--and that will go both ways, either pure tech with a sidekick who can cast healing and smite, or power-users who have a Sidekick who either has a suit of Robot Armor or a sweet ride (say, a Zone Ranger or Moutaineer Mark II).

I'd be way more down with 'free Extra co-pilot' for folks who have reason to need one.

My first thought was to take followers but was unsure how to create a SR experienced soldier. Getting six attacks each round could be really nasty, even more so if I take that prep-round to spread them out some.

The biggest difference is that followers are extras and sidekick is wild card. I really think if you are trying to determine what framework is "best" then extra characters should not be allowed.
