"Living Legend" Edge

Post by Krozog »

There are a lot of ways to make a character really tough in Savage Rifts. They can even heal really fast with ARES and other Races/IFs with regeneration. However, there isn't really a way to play Conan, Achilles, a (demi-)god, or any character who just isn't very likely to get hurt by physical damage.

I thought that this would be a cool way to emulate that kind of character.

Combat Edges

Iron Body
Requirements: Seasoned, Nerves of Steel, Vigor d8+
Whatever the reason, your character is a certifiable B.A. Whether he can see the flow of battle, is neigh unkillable god, has an extreme luck factor, or is just a martial arts grandmaster, your character is tougher than nails and has no need or desire for armor. In fact, armor is uncomfortable and limiting!
You calculate your toughness at the full value of Vigor die type. Once per session you can automatically ignore all damage resulting from a single attack. To get the bonus, a character must have no armor on (shields are allowed) and must not be benefiting from any form of physical armor. If he wants, he can wear bracers, greaves, a shirt or a helm, but these are only cosmetic, granting no armor bonus.

Iron Will
Requirements: Novice, Brave, Spirit d8+.
The character has seen many horrors the world has to offer, and holds his ground when lesser men flee. He gains an additional +2 to fear checks and subtracts 2 from rolls on the Fright Table.

Iron Soul
Requirements: Heroic, Iron Body, Iron Will, Spirit d10+, Vigor d10+
There is something more to your character than brute force. His Iron Will has tempered his Iron Soul, and he is tougher than ever. While benefiting from Iron Body you add 1/2 your spirit die type to your toughness.

Older/original versions of the above proposed Edges.
1.0 (Living Legend/Improved Living Legend)
Badass (Name WIP)
Requirements: Wild Card, Seasoned, Agility d8+, Vigor d10+
Whatever the reason, your character is a certifiable B.A. Whether he can see the flow of battle, is neigh unkillable god, has an extreme luck factor, or is just a martial arts grandmaster, your character is tougher than nails and has no need or desire for armor. In fact, armor is uncomfortable and limiting!

This Edge allows you to emulate this cinematic way of fighting. A hero or heroine with this Edge can make a free soak roll for each wounding attack as long as they are unarmored. To get the bonus, a character must have no armor on (shields are allowed). If he wants, he can wear bracers, greaves, a shirt or a helm, but these are only cosmetic, granting no armor bonus.
(For Savage Rifts, I would say that "cosmetic" items could be converted items with stats, but definitely not actual armor. I would also say that Cybernetics should probably not be allowed either. Battle-Hardened would not apply to this edge.)

Certifiable Badass (Name WIP)
Requirements: Wild Card, Heroic, Battle Hardened, Living Legend, Vigor d12+
While unarmored, your hero is rarely threatened by minor attacks. As long as they are unarmored, the sheer power of his badassery raises his Wild Die by one step when soaking wounds (usually from d6 to d8). In addition, once per session, he can add his Battle-Hardened bonus to a single Soak roll.
Original Edges from Beasts & Barbarians
Loincloth Hero/Bikini Heroine
Requirements: Wild Card, Novice, Agility d8+, Vigor d6+
Comics, movies and books always depict bare-chested barbarians fighting hordes of enemies without suffering the slightest scratch. They also show scantily dressed amazons engaging in savage melees with bug-eyed creatures and finishing their fight with no more than tousled hair.

This Edge allows you to emulate this cinematic way of fighting. A hero or heroine with this Edge can make a free soak roll for each wounding attack as long as they are unarmored. To get the bonus, a character must have no torso armor on (shields are allowed). If he wants, he can wear bracers, greaves or a helm, but these are only cosmetic, granting no armor bonus.

Loincloth God/Bikini Goddess
Requirements: Wild Card, Heroic, Dodge, Loincloth Hero/Bikini Heroine, Vigor d8+
While bare-chested, your hero is rarely threatened by minor attacks. As long as unarmored, the sheer power of his cool, barbaric appearance raises his Wild Die by one step when soaking wounds (usually from d6 to d8). In addition, once per session, he can add his Charisma, if positive, to a single Soak roll.

I would not be completely opposed to these.
However, I would raise the vigor requirements to d10 & d12 respectivly.
Then I would put rank requirement of Seasoned or Veteran on them.

Even in B&B I think these were broken easy to get.
In savage rifts where everyone is virtually unkillable anyways it could be a GM nightmare trying to challenge a player.

Even then, I would not be surprised to see GMs not want them in certain games.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Rank needs to be legendary!! I agree with Rob, we need to be looking at d12 vigor at least. Why not just do something like:

I have seen edges or knacks that ignore damage from one attack per session.

What I don’t get is why the no armor??

Living Legend
Requirements: Legendary, Vigor d12+
(Insert Flowery narrative)
Once per round (if not Shaken), the character can make a soak roll against one foe who hit him with an attack.

Improved Living Legend:
Requirments: Legendary, Improved Living Legend
The character can use the Living Legend ability equal to half his vigor die type per round, but only once per attack.

Combines a bit of counter attack, and a little bit of TW...

I updated the Vigor for both and upped Rank 1 from Novice to Seasoned, left rank 2 at Heroic...

I think the no armor deal was a balancing factor. At d10 Vigor you have 7 Toughness, 8 at d12 and that is higher than what B&B calls for. Sure, you can add in some Brawny and some Size...but how high are you likely to get your toughness without Armor? You could use the Mega Armor power and bump yourself up to 13-18. If you used boost trait on Vigor that'd only get you +2 toughness. That is a lot easier to stack wounds onto. More wounds = more likely to not get soaked.

Although, I'm not opposed to Pender's version and changing it 1 per round / 1 per half vigor either.

I think if you remove the unarmored limitation, the edge becomes a lot stronger. You're soaking wounds with 20+ Toughness instead of 8+.

Sorry bout that HC. There were problems, now fixed!

@Pender - That was a shortsightedness on my end. Im habitually terrible at naming things. The original B&B names were...not conducive to what I was going for either, though. I wouldn't be opposed to literally calling them Bad Ass and Certifiable Badass - but, again, I'm terrible at naming things :p.

The intent is someone who is just so good, or tough, or lucky, or whatever that physical damage isn't really a concern for them. I would also posit that its a nice way for some character concepts to advance. Take Hercules. He starts out as a super strong (And tough iirc?) demi-god. As he approaches godhood, maybe he takes these edges? He becomes so tough that he no longer needs that annoyingly bulky armor. Or a martial arts specialist who masters his skills to the point that he can avoid most damage. Etc.

Armor is the limiting factor, I left that in from B&B because its a strong edge and does need limiting. With the numbers thrown around in Savage Rifts, I fully expect the guy with this edge to receive 2-3 wounds at a time.

Which is cool, because with d10-12+ Vigor, battle hardened, and extra effort - they should be able to soak that! But without Extra Effort or Bennies...they're gunna start getting hurt. I could be grossly underestimating Savage Rifts...but I don't think so. Granted, there are some combinations that would be scary with this guy. Like a Lyn-Srial with this edge + ARES P&G Regeneration. That falls to the GM to realize that...this is going to be a hairy character.

As a legendary edge, I would approve something along these lines talked about, but anything less will not make it... A free soak attack against each attack? Even if you could not wear armor, which like in a fantasy game is like 2-4, that is just too much for a regular edge.

Oh and if you are approaching god-hood I am pretty sure you are legenday ;)

I do like the Once/Round & Half Vigor/Round option...But is that a bit too strong to combine with armor? Because I feel like the character with one free soak a round is going to get murdered with low armor in Savage Rifts if he can't soak that damage. But 6 soaks a round with armor might be gratuitous.

So I based it off of counter attack for the once per round. Now keep in mind if he is shaken all bets are off... A couple of bad guys with a light rail gun might be able to go through those six pretty quick with RoF 3. A bad guy doing a trick or test of wills to start this off makes it. For me I would allow the armor.

The other way to go, would just let the unarmored character recalculate his toughness value 2+die type instead of half. I honestly find the free soak mechanic a bit much.

D10 toughness with 6 pts of armor 2 pts of embedded toughness goes to 15 (6)

D10 toughness with no armor is 12 (0)

After factoring AP it is as good or a bit better. So I would say it is even...

Lets add in one of my favorite knacks from Ravaged Earth(Slightly modified):
Just a Scratch : Once per session you may automatically ignore all damage resulting from a single attack.

We Get:

Iron Body
Requirements: Seasoned, Vigor d8+
(Insert Flowery Narrative)
You calculate your toughness at the full value of Vigor die type. Once per session you can automatically ignore all damage resulting from a single attack. You must be unarmored to get the benefits of this edge.

Iron Soul
Requirements: Iron Will, Iron Body, Vigor d10+, Spirit d10+
(Insert Flowery Narative)
While benifiting from Iron Body you add 1/2 your spirit die type to your toughness.

That....Is pretty good. What is Iron Will from the Iron Soul requirements?

It still falls a little short of what I was going for though. A character like Conan, Achilles or Domino who just gives no fucks about damage (unless its to the heel..). Granted within reason. Im not going for an edge that makes you unkillable. I realize this is still a game :p. Could the ignore damage bit be once per round on Iron Soul?

Edit: Then again, it is straight Toughness, not armor, and that is pretty sexy...Ill have to think on it.

Its out of the solomon kane setting:
iROn WiLL

Requirements: Novice, Spirit d8+, Guts d6+ The character has seen many horrors the world has to offer, and holds his ground when lesser men fl ee. He gains +2 to all Guts rolls and subtracts 2 from rolls on the Fright Table.

So probably since this settimg does not use guts,
iROn WiLL
Requirements: Novice, Spirit d8+, Brave.
The character has seen many horrors the world has to offer, and holds his ground when lesser men fl ee. He gains an additional +2 to fear checks and subtracts 2 from rolls on the Fright Table.

Ok I updated the new versions. I like it...I wonder if it is too many edges, though?

I added Nerves of Steel as a requirement to Iron Body. It just felt right.

I liked Iron Will, it felt like it had a good vibe with this line of trees too, so I added it to the top and gave it the Brave edge as a requirement. 5 Edges. Should I knock it back down to 4? I could add an Agility requirement in place of Nerves of Steel's like the original edge had. It still makes sense; even if you're tough, there are some hits you need to avoid.

Re: "Living Legend" Edge

Looking good. Not 100% about Iron will as it is an edge meant to replace brave. But ya know it is just a minor thing.

I got a few more edges for you from Ravaged Earth!

AWE-INSPIRING PRESENCE
Requirements: Wild Card, Legendary, Strong Willed
Y ou may double your normal command radius and make Tests of Will against groups of Extras as if they were a single entity (i.e., the group makes a group roll when opposing your attempt). Y ou may also apply the effects of your Leadership Edges to allied Wild Cards that willingly submit to your leadership.

ROCK OF GIBRALTAR
Requirements: Wild Card, Legendary, Spirit d10+, Vigor d10+
You are physically tough and mentally resilient, and can only be taken out by a truly decisive blow. If you are ever Shaken, further Shaken results are ignored (i.e., they do not inflict wounds).

Not of fan of Iron Soul, and I would not allow it without some thinking. Perhaps 1/2 Spirit is too much, but a flat +1 is okay in line with other toughness edges?
There are already legendary edges that only grant +1 Toughness.

Basically you are giving five to six toughness for an edge. That is too much when you are already have free soak rolls.

For ROCK OF GIBRALTAR I am unsure if it is worth an edge. It is basically Hardy the monstrous ability. But that has been shown mathematically to be worth less that a +1 To parry or toughness.

There are exceptions such as rolling no more than 2d4 or 1d6 versus a 5, but that is very rare.

The free Soak rolls are also gone, RFT. Ignore damage 1 time per session (quarter) instead of soak rolls.

The no armor (Except shields) or physical armor from any other source still remains.

I could just put Brave as a requirement to Iron Soul instead of Iron Will and remove Iron Will from the list. I think 4 Edges is a decent investment for Iron Soul, too.

Rock of Gibraltar looks cool..but I'm kinda with Rob on that one. Espeically with new Shaken rules. It fits thematically, though. Im not sure its worth the edge...Maybe, but not Legendary.
