Trunk of Deceit WIP

Post by Tsuchiya Rika »

I want to trap my conceal arcana as a trunk with a false bottom (Enchanting - the power is a gizmo similar to Weird Science).

Is there a way to make this work somehow? This is how its worded right now.

Trunk of Deceit (Conceal Arcana; 2 PPE) [Novice]
Range: Special
Duration 1 Hour(1/Hour)
Trapping: This power is integrated within a large trunk. The trunk itself is 4 foot long, 2 foot wide, four foot deep and heavy when empty. It has a false bottom, and when activated, it will conceal the arcane nature of any objects contained within the false bottom at the cost of 2 PPE as long as the bottom remains unopened and the cost is maintained.
Effect
Conceal Arcana can be used to conceal a single supernatural item, being, or effect. When used, those who wish to see through the ruse with detect arcana use their arcane skill roll as an opposed roll against the concealer’s skill (rolled anew each time detect arcana is cast). The detecting character may only attempt to see through concealed powers once per fresh casting.

A Technowizard could do it, it is simply a conceal arcana that affects itself not the activator.

This seems pretty straightforward to me. Given the bulky nature of the device (and thus it being somewhat impractical to just carry around all the time), I'd actually give the power a slight bit more flexibility--essentially, you can 'pre-spend' the PPE needed to maintain the power at the time of casting, letting you set it as a time-lock. Doing this turns the casting time into a full-round action. Obviously, opening the false bottom prematurely ends the effect.

The one thing I'm not sure about is... is it necessary? A mundane trunk with an airtight seal (to prevent scent-tracking by dogboys) would actually hide an item from Detect Arcana, anyway (the spell requires you to actually see the item/person being scanned). The actual main benefit of the Conceal Arcana effect then, isn't defeating Detect Arcana--it's blocking attempts to use Divination/Communion to locate the item.

The point of a false bottom is to better conceal the item. Say we were stopped by someone that demanded to check our goods, and they opened the trunk, it would be either full of mundane gear or empty with the arcane stuff hidden in the false bottom.

My exalted detect arcana only works on people, so I thought it would be handy to have a way to hide items if it is really necessary. It's not so much to conceal ourselves on the fly, but to get us from place to place undetected. If we need to conceal our items in the field, we would either have to leave them behind or someone else would have to do it.

Im open to better suggestions to replace the trunk if anyone has them.

Her trappings are largely Ofuda/Omamori (paper tags/shinto "good luck" charms). Her background is that of a Shinto practitioner and exorcist from Japan (not sure that's a real thing lore-wise, but it's what I went with). As an enchanter, she isn't completely locked into those trappings exclusively. I trapped her detect arcana as a facial tattoo.

Would the PPE cost need to be per item, or would paying the cost once for everything within the false bottom suffice?

You are concealing the area, not the items...the items just happen to be in the area. Carlos did something similar in RP with a massive concealment to hide a group of DB's.
