Background

A Father’s Speech:
Humanity is on the brink of destruction. DB invaders crowd the borders, and only the pure will of mankind can hold them back. But they are faster than us, stronger than us, and many of those vile creatures had twisted intellects that made them by some measures smarter. So what can the human race do against such creatures? It’s simple. Every one of us needs to be the best that we can be. We must work ten times as hard as them, and overcome nature itself. We are mankind, and we will not be the victims of those who walk on the land of our ancestors. Of you, I expect everything, just as I expect it of myself.

You must become fast, you must become strong, and you must become wise in the ways of war. Work everyday, fight everyday, kill everyday, and it is my solemn promise that the DB will grow to fear you. When your name is whispered in horror, when they call you a monster, only then will you join my side. Not as my child, but as a representative of mankind’s soul against the burning nightmares that wander the wastes.

My daughter, if you see me falter, if I grow lazy or my heart grows weak to the cries of the unclean, then all I ask is that it be your bullet that puts me down. I pledge I will offer you the same mercy.

Brianna Jones was born with a world of opportunities before her. The child of a prominent military family, she had barely managed walking before her father began her training. More than learning the matters of combat, he demanded she excel in everything, teaching hard work above all else, and illustrating from a young age that the world was full of monsters that would cut down any and all who let themselves grow too relaxed. He told her that rest was a cruelty he could not offer her, so long as the DB walked the world.

When she was seven, she was made to take her first life. A small baby bird that had fallen from its nest. Brianna had brought it to her father, hoping he would help it, but he had told her that it was to weak to go on, and that it was her responsibility to end its pain. He had placed the rock in her hand, and told of her to think of it as a spider. He spanked her until she agreed to do it.

Tuning ten, her birthday present had been a Northern Gun model 33, with shooting lessons handled mostly by some of the men who served with her father, as he was usually busy. She had wondered then why they seemed so much nicer to her than he was, letting her cool her wrists when the recoil made them sore, and even giving her some time to recover. Brianna had gotten very proud of herself, in part because of the praise she received from her instructors, though when she’d finally had a chance to show her father, he’d simply given her a nod.

Hunting trips are strange affairs in the Coalition. Going out past the walls into the wilderness is a dangerous thing, and everyone had been armed to the teeth, despite more hoping for a mutant deer. At the age of thirteen, Brianna had been included, and actually been in rather high spirits for the trip… until the party had stumbled across something else. It wasn’t really a battle. They’d mowed down what looked like a funny little man with wiggly bits on his mouth, and a silly crack running up and down his forehead incredibly quick. He’d been alone. Her father said he was probably a spy. Of course, when he’d twitched, the older men had gone to finish him off, but her dad had stopped them.

He’d stopped them, put her gun in her hand, and told her that she had better show her how good a shot she was once again. It had looked at her so pitifully, so full of pain that all she could see was the little baby bird once more. When the bullet flew, the thing had made a terrible sound before going slack. She’d cried, and winced as she expected her father to strike her like he always did when that happened, but for the first time, he’d held her, in front of all his men and told her she’d done a good job.

After that, she’d given everything she had to her studies, excelling at academics, athletic events, and the all important military training that had long been part of the standard curriculum at the Academy. Brianna was becoming the perfect soldier, and as the years went by, she dreamed of the little man less and less. Everyone had begun to praise her, except of course her father, who offered mostly an absence of punishment in place of it. When she graduated, Brianna was surprised to find he had volunteered to perform the final address, mentioning her by name as the Academy’s star and repeating the words he’d told her long ago, if modified slightly to inspire the whole crowd. She nearly cried once more, but since that time, the girl now a soldier had learned to hold such things in. When he shook her hand, she felt complete.

The battlefield… was a different story. Private Jones had spent her whole life preparing for it, but war was a messy, bloody affair that the clean halls of a school could not convey. First came the monotony of long marches and holding uncontested points. The daily grind of patrols and paperwork, the growing wish that absolutely anything would happen, and the quiet nights when she was left alone with her thoughts far far too long.

Next came horror. The walls of their base overrun by red skinned devils, creatures Private Jones had only seen on vid screens. Brodkil. She knew their names, understood how to fight them, but fear touched her heart as the men around her, people she considered friends, were butchered and filled with holes. She fought back. She followed her training, remembered her father’s words and became like a devil herself, letting cover and tenacity be her shields against imminent death.

And that’s when the rocket launcher went off.

The ringing in her ears obscured the world as she lifted her bleeding head to see a scrawny looking Brodkil lifting what looked like it belonged mounted to a vehicle. It laughed silently as it loaded another shot, and it was all she could do to dive behind an especially thick metal wall just before the next explosion nearly shook her bones from her skin. Alive, but winded, Brianna grabbed her belt of grenades and used the smoke of the explosion to circle around the monster, making it out of its field of view as it stepped forward to confirm the kill. Up close like this, she could finally see how it managed the weapon, covered as it was in innumerable cybernetic devices that made it so much more than its fellows. Perhaps this was another way that man could match the DBs.

When the entire belt of grenades went off, the creature had flown maybe ten feet into the air before landing with a crunch. Metal screamed as some internal system seemed to be trying to repair him, but Brianna lifted her gun, pointed at the Brodkil’s face and held down the trigger. “Just one more baby bird, daddy.”

When the battle was over, they were called heroes. Half the unit dead, but as many DBs dead. They’d done well. There was a medal. Promotion. Everything was going right. Just as planned. She was the soldier she was supposed to be. Humanity was safer. She was Corporal Jones now. Her father was waiting for her at the top.

Corporal Jones progressed through ranks faster then most, propelled in admitted part by nepotism, but much more by her unflinching resolve, alongside a willingness others lacked to heavily modify their own body with cybernetics. That night had convinced her that it could help breach the gap between human and DB. Every chance she could she went to the cyberdoc for her next surgery. Her father being up there in the CS provided access to many upgrades ordinary soldiers couldn’t afford. She never felt she had enough because there was always a bigger monster around the corner just like her father always said. Regardless, recovery time was lengthy, and the mission always came first.

Most missions Jones went on were mundane. Close a rift here, attack a base near Tolkien, or stop a shifter... things she’d thought great accomplishments in her youth. But she was long past greenhorn status, and as she rose another rank, she started to feel colder to it.

Then, one mission changed everything. It had been just like any other briefing, notable only because it was near that hunting trip so long ago. Sergeant Jones had almost forgotten about it. The mission was a simple clearing out of a DB base. No survivors. Standard procedure. Upon arrival, they found it was not a base, but a small village of both human and DB. They’d been living together peacefully, and the crime was a well known one. Her father had told her this was a big mission. One that might change her role forever. No one was armed. No survivors. Leave no survivors.

She stood there for a moment, stunned while her squad began to move in. The DBs… she recognized them. Her nightmares re-awoken in her. Brianna remembered the silly little man with the little tentacles where his lips should be. Her squadmate she had trained with for years grabbed one of the DB kids, put his gun to its head. The mother screamed. Brianna cut her comrade down before he could pull the trigger. As she cut him down she cried “NO! No more baby birds, daddy!”

Shot in the back, it didn’t take the celebrated CS soldier to long to end the lives of her entire unit. She cried. With every life she took, knowing they were willing to do what she no longer could. She knew then that the Coalition and her father were the real monsters. Brianna Jones helped the people of the village pack their things and led them to a place she had only heard rumors of. A place that offered sanctuary to everyone, human and DB alike. A place called Castle Refuge.
