5.2 SOG Support Deployment: Phase 2 (Operation 1)

Post by High Command »

SOG Support Deployment Phase 2 - Planning and Operations: Stage 1
Date: September 1, 109 P.A.
Time: 1900
Conditions: 82 degrees outside and the sun is almost down. The shadows are long and in the shadow of buildings it is dark. When looking west, there is a good chance at accidentally looking right into the sun. Because of this there is a consistent -2 to all visual based rolls. Your optics will negate this (for as long as they work).
Weather: Clear, with fog over downtown in the distance.
Ley Line info: Old Chicago is rife with ley lines, but Fort Resilience is one of the few areas with none within a mile of the base.
Location: Ruins of Old Chicago, Grid Reference 4C Mark 8B

As everyone gathers together again, both transports land in some large open field. While overgrown and full of all kinds of vegetation, it has few trees and no buildings. It must have been some sort of park or recreation area pre-rifts. Regardless, the two squads gather there and Freeman gets everyone's attention.

"Captain got wounded in the last mission, so I'm taking point from here on. He's mobile and pissed off, but not in any shape to go stomping around in Fed controlled war zones. He's running the op from the drop ship, so if you get redirect orders, listen up. Now for us. We've got four teams, four objectives. So listen up. Bear-2 ground team, you will push through this region, find the object on this tablet and take posession. Anything that stands in your way, eliminate it. Engage at your discretion, and don't forget we have priority tasking on the artillery. But we absolutely need the target intact. Only if it is immovable are you cleared to destroy it, but we need video footage and close ups of its innards. Wright should be able to either remove it or get us the intel we need - details are on the tablet. RCSG wants to build something to counteract it in the future. By the way, it destroys electronics if it gets charged enough. It just went off and downed another transport - not ours thankfully. We estimate 30 minutes to full charge. Ford, I need you with me though. I brought the hoverbike for you. Split your explosives with Bear-2's ground elements. You guys can keep the hovercraft for now."

He goes over the objectives for his own squads, which includes eliminating an armored company and reinforcing and extracting the bulk of Dearborn Company, and then turns to Bear-2's power armor team. "Your task is to capture an enemy tactician. Goes by Killian Lee. Cocky bastard, but a veritable genius by all accounts. He needs to be alive, he does not need to be conscious. He is a mage, so take appropriate precautions. There's a gag and hand restraints in the drop ship if you don't have any. First we need to find them though."

"Command just moved new intel drones into our AO. They will take 10 minutes to get into position and then 10 minutes to get back out. At fifteen minutes from just a few moments ago, they will evac the zone leaving us with zero extra intel. You have a short time to get it done, so get it done. Dansk will rejoin Bear-2 now that I have Ford back, so good luck everyone! Rendezvous is here in 25 minutes. If Bear-2's ground team takes out their target in that time we'll push it to 45 minutes, mostly to give them time to get it back to the AO. Work together folks! Let's get it done!"

Player Directions on how to run the covert action
Covert Action Details:
This Roll will consume the next ten minutes of your life.

Ground Team: Recover the Electromagnetic Pulse Resonator - a device that will wipe every technological devices' computer in less than 30 minutes; But first you have to find it!! You have a general area and the assistance of recon drones, but you still have to search. Fun fact, this area gets leveled on a regular basis, but the basements, sewers, and subways in the area are known to survive. Usually it's not an issue. Today? Who knows. But if you don't find them in the open, you're searching miles of sewers and subway tunnels and a ton of individual basements and cellars. Thankfully you have a signature to track!

Power Armor Assault Team: You must find the Federation of Magic tactician, Killian Lee! - You know where he was last sighted, and you know he HAS to have a good view of the battlefield, but he could be using a drone or minion for that aspect. Fun fact, this area gets leveled on a regular basis, but the basements, sewers, and subways in the area are known to survive. Also, it got flooded during the Dark Ages and the area got buried under meters of silt - so whole buildings may be intact or mostly intact under the ground. Usually it's not an issue. Today? Who knows. But if you don't find them in the open, it's going to be a long search. Thankfully you have a last known position from about 15 minutes ago to narrow it down! But he is CRAFTY!
  • Pick one person to be the lead. They must use one of the following skills: Investigation, K/Computers, K/Electronics, Lockpicking, Notice, Stealth, Streetwise. Characters can cooperate with any skill as long as they can come up with a cool way to explain it. Maximum cooperative bonus is +4.
  • Power Armor Team Target Number for a success: 5 (Roll Against Enemy Leader, if failure Everyone on this team is “On the Run,” gaining Enemy (Federation of Magic Assassin/Scout); supporting rolls must use this for success as well, as if rolling against parry)
    • Team Members: Bouchard, Colton, and Marshall, plus Colton's two Skelebots and Sgt Dansk (who has a d8 and wild die in whatever skill is needed). The leader can roll Dansk's roll and anyone on the team can spend a Benny for a reroll (not EE) if needed. Colton can have the Skelebots act as a group which gives them a +1 to a roll on a skill they have, but no wild die.
  • Ground Team Team Target Number for a success: 4 (Situation Normal - No Penalty or Bonus)
    • Ground Team Members: Wright, Steelcreek, Maverick, Perry, and Son - no NPCs
  • Resources Spent: As a default your character spends 1 E-Clip or Magazine/Full Load of Shots and 1 Grenade. Psychics may expend 4 ISP instead of a grenade. Before rolling declare if you would like to have your character risk more or expend more resources for a better chance of success. Note: you must have the resources to spend them. If you run out of grenades, you must expend 1 extra E-Clip or Magazine instead. If wound or fatigue levels are chosen in lieu of resources they stick with you until the GM says otherwise (In this case, after the third stage of this operation).
    • -2: Conserve your energy - Believing it may be an easy battle you accept an additional -2 to your roll in exchange for spending 1/2 resources (rounded down).
    • +0: In The Fight - Wanting to stay on top of things you fight like a professional. You roll without an additional modifier for the default resource cost.
    • +2: Serious Business - You do not play around and do what you have to in order to ensure victory, even when it requires risking yourself. You may double the resources spent, or accept 1 Fatigue or 1 Wound to gain a bonus of +2 to this roll.
    • +4: No Matter The Cost - When Battle comes you go all in, winning no matter the personal cost. You may triple the resources spent, or accept 2 Fatigue or 2 Wounds to gain a bonus of +4 to this roll.
  • Narrate it all. Tell us the story of how your covert efforts helped or hindered your efforts to find the location of your target.

Logan takes the tablet and skims the information presented on it as he listened to the orders being given, his body still somewhat sore from the extraction. Wright looks up immediately when Freeman mentions that it destroys all electronics with in range and charges about every 30 minutes. Son of a bitch!!! If we take too long, I'll wind up as blind as a bat! His face furrows with worry for a moment as he continues listening even closer. Logan begins furiously thinking about how to track something that destroys electronics when a thought occurs to him. If this thing is destroying electronics, it could be doing so as some sort of massive electromagnetic burst, similar to an EMP. If I could triangulate the build up of the charge. Wright pulls out his communicator and his compass/inertial mapper, and then proceeded into the area of effect of the device, checking his communicator for signs of distortion or static indicative of a build up of electromagnetic energy. It was right as he drooped his head taking his first reading when a blast of magical energy flew past his head. He dropped down to his knees and huddled under a half wall as he finished recording the information of his first reading, then readied his combat shotgun and fired a knockdown round at the first mage, knocking him down right in front of Steelcreek. "Enjoy!" Logan shouts to the Psi-stalker.

Under the cover of fire, Wright works his way east about 150' to take another reading, firing his shotgun as he went. A group of three Feds took cover behind a broken wall of a house, and Logan cooked and lobbed a grenade, watching it explode just as it cleared the wall and vaporizing a good chunk of it as well. He sees the house and thinks for a moment and realizes he could use it to take readings not just on a horizontal axis, but on a vertical one as well. He motions Cassandra over to him and asks her if there's anyone left in that house. After getting that information from her, he tells the rest of the group "I need to get into that house to take the last three sensor readings before I can confirm the approximate location of the device, I need a reading on the bottom floor, the top floor, and from the roof. I'm ready when you guys are!"

The group moves as a unit into the house, clearing the first floor of the house as they entered. Wright takes his third reading as the rest of the team prepare to clear the second floor. As soon as he's done recording information, he forms up in the back, they ascend and clears the second story of the home before he takes the fourth reading. Looking around, Wright sees no easy way of getting onto the roof, so he settles on climbing out a window and lifting himself onto the roof, not exactly the most ideal situation in the world, but he needed that last reading for a third horizontal position in relation to the device. Keeping as low to the roof as he could, he made his way to the chimney and put his communicator at the top of it while laying prone on the roof. As Logan manuevered himself to be pulled back into the window, hanging onto the roof by one hand, Wright takes a shot to his shoulder of the arm he's hanging from. Other than a grunt of pain, no one would have been able to tell that he had taken a shot.

Knowing that Feds were likely to be descending on that house in a matter of moments, the whole group hustles back to the first floor and quickly make their way further down the ruined block where they were able to take a moment and collect their collective breathes as Logan takes a moment to finish triangulating the device when Chai kneels down next to him opening a medkit. "Don't worry about me, man, I'll be fine. We don't have the luxury of time for me to get bandaged, myself especially. If I don't deactivate or destroy that device before it goes off again, I'll be completely blind, and nothing more than a burden to you guys. And besides, I had to train while experiencing simulated levels of pain, as well as worked in an actual combat situation while injured. Staunch the bleeding at least, then make sure the rest of them are fine, though." When Chai takes a look at his medical sensor, he'll notice that the main indicator that Wright had been injured was the bloodflow sensor, with it showing that his neurological responses are completely unchanged from since they rescued that unit less than an hour ago.

Going for elevation to see the layout of the terrain, Chai climbs on top of the hover vehicle that brought them to their current location. Scanning the surrounding area, he uses his infantry training by evaluating quadrants and sectors within those quadrants. With a tablet and stylus, he snaps digital photos of each quadrant and sector, then annotates the snap shots.

Chai feels that he is beginning to understand the way that Old Chicago was designed and built. Noting various "streets" and the makeshift homes and buildings that now line the streets, he feels he can pin point the most effective location for the device they are looking for.

Using his pictures and his notes, he determines that the more walls the worse it would be for the device. The more rebar in the old walls the worse the device would work. Chai locks down on three or four potential locations based on the criteria on non existing previous walls and minimal obstructions in the area.

After identifying the now three suitable locations, which by his calculations are all north of their current location, Chai points these details out to the ground team. "One of these three locations has the device."

As is his habit, Jaren wears his helmet with the faceplate removed so as to not interfere with his Psychic Sense, so it's easy to see his grin when Logan flings a mage his way. Without preamble (so as to allow his victim no chance to react), Jaren draws his vibro-knife and plunges it into the mage’s chest. The mage twitches once, then twice, and then goes still as Steelcreek breathes deep, absorbing the now-released psychic energy before it has a chance to dissipate. The entire brutal episode takes only seconds, and then it is back to business. "Much obliged, Wright. I needed a boost."

Seeing Wright dangling from the window, Steelcreek flips the switch on this jetpack and flies up to their demo-man. ”I’ve got you,” he says, using the pack’s thrust to lower both of them to the ground. The landing is harder than he’d have liked, but it’s still plenty soft to avoid injury. The added weight overtaxes the unit, though, and Jaren finds that he has burned through quite a bit more of his e-clip than expected. With a grunt, he pops it out of the pack and inserts a fresh one as they head for cover.

While Wright and Son work their “magic” with electronics (he assumes that's what Son is up to, with that tablet), Steelcreek uses his jetpack to hop from vantage point to vantage point, keeping his senses alert for anything out of the ordinary. He can’t quite put his finger on why, but he locks on to a spot in the distance that just seems off somehow. It’s similar to how his Psychic Sense alerts him to the presence of magic or psionics, but not quite the same… but he radios it in anyway. ”I’m feeling some odd energy activity at the following coordinates,” he says, giving the location where he sensed the weird whatever that was.

As the order was issued to hunt down this Killian Lee character, Raleigh Ray's thoughts reflected back to his childhood when is Uncle Jessup would take him hunting for deer, raccoon, or whatever it was that was going to be on the plate that evening. With deer it was much easier, where they simply had to set up a blind in a spot where they knew the deer trafficed, or were enticed to do so by baiting them for weeks beforehand. With raccoon, it was simply a matter of leaving out enough temptations for the 'coons to come to them. But when they needed to hunt something more dangerous like wolves, bear, or velociraptors, Uncle Jessup often would make certain that the hunting party could communicate -- usually with walkie-talkies and hands-free headsets -- so they could report their observations to each other as fast as they could see anything. "Why have one set of eyes when you can have a dozen?" his uncle would say. "... especially if something maybe hunting you right back!"

"Dansk?" Raleigh Ray began on the team's private channel. "... With your permission, I'd like to network the radar readings o' our power armors an' Skelebots. That way we can share telemetry an' baddie blips."

Once permission was granted, Raleigh Ray got to work, not wasting a seconds time. Making use of their high-speed communications systems, it was simple matter of getting the right systems to talk with each other, and getting the computers to eliminate any redundancies. In virtually no time, he was done.

Joe is competent enough with his Terror Trooper, but to those who have piloted power armors longer can see he is rookie at it. Joe follows the team in keeping relatively close to their commander. The Terror Trooper works it's way over flattened buildings and around partially standing walls. Joe is pretty adept at moving over terrain normally, and with the Terror Trooper he takes what would be riskier jumps outside of the armor. Joe spots a decently sized wall and clambers up onto its top, balancing like a demented gargoyle .

Particle Beam rifle in hand, Joe tracks across the area with both his eyes and sensors. At first nothing seems to be out of the ordinary of the ruins of Old Chicago, but soon enough Joe starts to see a few indescrepencies in the terrain that scream ambush to him. "I think I see some spider holes in grid three and grid seven. Moving to investigate." Joe says as he hops down from the fifteen foot high wall he'd been perched on. Joe slowly creeps across the field of rubble, hoping to sneak up on the two hidden emplacements.

As Joe gets near, a laser cuts a shallow furrow across the shoulder of his Terror Trooper. "Contact, moving to engage." Joe says as he kicks up the speed and makes a beeline straight for his target. Once Joe feels he's in range, he's annoyed that his target seems to be invisible. Fuck it. Joe thinks as he fires a series of shots into the emplacement, vaporizing rubble and the upper half of some humanoid who mysteriously appeared after being hit. "One Tango down, moving to investigate." Joe radios as he moves forward to see if there are anymore targets. Joe does find some spotter gear, but it seems it was a lone individual he killed. Joe moves on and continues to make his sweeps.

Colton's idea is a good one. Bouchard doesn't say it out loud but gives the guy one notch of credibility in her opinion. Right along with the things that crawled on the bottom of Lake Ontario.

Their linked net proved to be very efficient, especially using the SAMAS to transfer information beyond line of sight. This information sharing systems should be standard. Commanders would be able to manage battle resources live in real time. This could be especially true in Old Chicago where there were lots of drones flying around and tall buildings to set up relays.

At first, finding the enemy was simple. They hadn't accounted for a coordinated system. Each time a contact was made the nearest power armor would engage and Bouchard would sweep in from above to provide heavy support.

Unfortunately, Killian Lee was no slouch. Rather than assaults on the formation his forces switched to surgical strikes to disrupt the detection grid - particularly the skelebots.

Adjusting to support them Solène watched for targets. Suddenly, the head of one of the bots jerked awkwardly. Miraculously it stayed attached.

"Contact, bot one taking fire. Who has eyes on target?" No one did.

Gaining altitude she surveyed the scene as another bolt flew toward the skelebots. Getting a fix on the source she revved her engines and made charged the position, leading with a hail of fire from her rail gun. The high velocity projectiles kicked up chunks of old concrete and dust. The dust cloud saved the day.

Inside the cloud Bouchard could make out the translucent silhouette of a figure. Aiming slightly in front, she assumed, of the invisible shooter she walked her fire backward in a wall of accelerated mass. She could tell some of her shots connected as the figured staggered, than appeared suddenly. The armor was in tatters and the flashy cape torn with bullet holes. However, healing magic was powerful and could get a wound mage back in the fight. Not taking any chances, Solène opened fire on the wounded sniper the impact making him dance and writh well after he was already dead.

Confirming the kill she reported back, "Clear."

Old Chicago
Evening
Round 0

Cassandra listened to Freeman give the briefing for the next mission. They needed to find some sort of device that destroyed electronics. Cass had a basic understanding of electronics, but that was it. Fortunately, Wright seemed adept with them.

Wright was taking some sort of sensor reading, so Cassandra scanned the area with her rifle. Then her danger sense was tingling. “Wright! Get down!” A blast of magic sailed over Wright’s head. He delayed, but then dove for cover and shot the offending mage. She tries not to shiver as Steelcreek devours the mage’s magic.

“Looks like they know we’re here now,” Cass said. She laid down covering fire while Wright moved.

Wright motioned Cassandra over, and she ran in a low crouch.

"I need to get into that house to take the last three sensor readings before I can confirm the approximate location of the device. I need a reading on the bottom floor, the top floor, and from the roof. I'm ready when you guys are!"

Cassandra nodded. She closed her eyes and focused, reaching out her senses. “The house is clear,” she told Logan.

They raced toward the house and entered as they had been trained, clearing the first floor before moving up to the second. It was habit and routine, even though Cass had already cleared it. Plus it was safer to do.

When Wright moved to climb out the window, Cassandra helped him, while at the same time boosting his strength to make it easier. When he took fire while climbing into the window, Cass broke out the neighboring window and laid down cover fire, sniping the Fed who had been firing at them.

They cleared out of the house and took a breather while Son took a look at Wright’s injury. Cassandra kept overwatch.

Son seemed to have some idea of where the device might be. Cass watched him work something out on his tablet.

Steelcreek called out some odd energy readings at some nearby coordinates.

“Let me check them out,” Cassandra said. “Perry, cover me!”

Cassandra dashed ahead to the next cover. She crouched down and extended her senses out again.

“That’s it!” Cass radioed back to the others. “At least I think it is. Some big, pulsing blue orb flickering with electricity.” She moved her sensors around. “The time between pulses does seem to be getting shorter.”

Cass moved her vision. “They made some kind of makeshift bunker they set up to control the sight lines.” Cassandra paused and ‘moved’ again, this time lower. “There are some underground parts of the buildings around here. They aren’t flooded, and I’m not seeing any inhabitants. We could get in through a cellar and come up behind the bunker, toss in a grenade or two, and that thing is ours.”

Cassandra checked her e-clip. If they were going to assault that bunker, she needed a change out. She quickly changed and dashed in a crouch back to the others. “That building can access the tunnels.” She indicated a nearby structure.

Perry listened to the briefing and noted this seemed to be a more mobile op for now. She stashes the big gun in it's case in the vehicle. She also quickly hooks up her mobile tripod to her other rifle.

She follows with the rest of the ground unit.
“Looks like they know we’re here now,” Cass said. She laid down covering fire while Wright moved.
As Wright move to the second location, she fires off her rifle to also provide cover fire.

After Wright took out the three feds behind the wall, she pulls forward to rejoin the rest of the group.
“The house is clear,” she told Logan.
Perry stashed her rifle on her back and pulled out her pistol, just easier to use in tight quarters. As a team they started clearing out the building but as Cass stated, it was already clear.

Wright went out to get out onto the roof through the windows. He started taking fire and Cass busted out a window to provide cover. Perry also busted out a window and fired off some rounds to provide cover. Cass managed to snipe the fed. Perry started scanning the area visually to keep a watchful eye as Steelcreek helped Wright get to down to the ground.

Perry stayed up on the second floor but she pulled out her rifle.

She kept an eye on Steelcreek, ready to provide cover to him as he jump around with his jetpack. That's his specialty of course.
he radios it in anyway. ”I’m feeling some odd energy activity at the following coordinates,” he says, giving the location where he sensed the weird whatever that was.

“Let me check them out,” Cassandra said. “Perry, cover me!”
"I got you. Let's get this done." Perry replies. She provides some cover fire as Cassandra dashes head to the next cover position. Cass does her thing and heads back, Perry uses her jetpack to get back down from the building after she returns.
“That building can access the tunnels.” She indicated a nearby structure.
"Let me go check it out. I do have some know a thing or two about being quiet." Perry looks the building over for a way in. She is just suddenly gone as she sneaks off. Quietly she is openning a door on the structure and entering it.

The dilemma being she has to move quickly. Time is not something they have. She starts scouting the building, putting her training as an assassin to work. She runs into a fed patrolling, but she is hidden and they don't spot her. Her smaller size helping her hide. She gets the drop on them, coming up from behind and using her vibro knife she makes the kill by slitting their throat before they can do anything. She grabs the body before it can hit the ground. things to the harness for enhancing her strength, she eases it to the ground without a sound and pulls it out of sight. Checking the building some more, makes another similar kill to another poor unfortunate fed patrolling. She also finds access to the tunnels.

She radios the group, "Building is clear and I found the tunnels Cass mentioned."

Perry finds a cover position near the entrance to the tunnels and waits for everyone else to arrive.
