Chi-Town Departure Terminal

Chi-Town Military Departure Terminal

The Chi-Town Military Departure Terminal is as busy as any international airport, if any of them actually had ever seen one. You each have a ticket and the clothes on your back. A credit card with your picture, name, rank, and ID number on it is also on it. They ticket shows what gate number you're to go to. You are set to leave tomorrow at 8 pm, offload, sleep in whatever space is laid out for you, and then get up on the first to do initial paperwork and grab your basic gear before check in and the welcome speech by the Brigade Commander. There are places to eat, but no rooms. You basically lay out wherever you can. Occasionally you can find a room for rent for the night so you can get a shower, but priority for those goes to those with connections or those with rank above a sergeant. So it is you all find yourself in one of the five dozen terminal bars that serves food and beer to the arriving and departing soldiers. Each of you has been here at least a day. Last night you slept on a couch under and arrival board, because that was all that was available. Tonight, you're hoping for more peaceful surroundings.

Raleigh Ray stood there, confused and literally scratching his head. His eyes shifted back and forth between the the Gate Number on his ticket and the bewildering You Are Here map in front of him on the wall. The labyrinth-like layout of the terminal did nothing but give him headaches everywhere he looked.

"Gawd' dern! Why can't civil engineers and real engineers go to the same dern scoolin'!"

As he stood there the hillbilly yokle drew the occasional look from passers-by, with his amazingly quoifed hair and denim coveralls over cimson red tee that boldly said It's All Relative In Arkansas.

Alan wakes up from the couch. You would think a hotel room would be provided. My father told me to become an officer, I just had to get into the thick of things didn't I. With his stomach rumbling for breakfast, Alan walks up to the nearest bar. Beer for breakfast? Yeay for alcoholism.

"I'll take a burger with the works, fries and a lager." Alan will swipe his card to pay for the food. While the food is being made and once the beer is given to him, he'll take a look around at the people in the terminal while taking a drag on the beer.

Seeing the redneck staring at the maps in front of him, Alan feels some form of sympathy. Jesus, another illiterate redneck. with an audible sigh Alan walks to the poor lost soul.

"You look lost. Where are you trying to get to?" Alan will hold out his hand expecting the guy to give him his ticket. "Aren't you a bit aways from Arkansas?"

Looking around the terminal Solène tries not to smile smugly as she listens to grunts complain about the sleeping conditions. All of them have been trough at least basic, so it really shouldn't be a problem but they complained anyway.

Southerners, she thinks but continues to remain stoic and she stretches from sleeping on the floor curled up in a corner. A roof over her head a place to sleep and all this food made by someone else. Being in the Army was nothing like living hand to mouth in the mines of Iron Heart. Sure, there was danger but at least here you get weapons.

Meandering into the nearest bar Solène takes a seat at a table by herself and looks at the menu. Without even thinking about it she pushes the button for "American", although she is surprised to see a "French" option. Perhaps she would be more welcome down here but quickly dismisses the thought, Probably just a throw back to pre-treachery days.

As the machines reads the options Solène mouths along, not trying to read but trying to improve her American accent, consciously trying to eliminate any last vestiges of her past. Of course, there was the whole name thing, but she couldn't bring herself to legally change it - yet.

Rolling her eyes at the options she orders soup and water then sits down to eat, making sure her back was to the wall and in a spot where she could watch everyone coming and going.

Without diverting his gaze from the You Are Here map, Raleigh Ray handed the stranger his ticket, almost unthinkingly. "Y'all round 'dez part seem to have an allergy to straight lines." he said with a frustrated tone. He then gestured to the map. "Ah tell ya, stranger, I'd give my left nut to be back in Arkansas. Ah mean, LOOK at 'dis mess! Is a logical grid pattern too much to ask 'fer!"

Accepting defeat for the moment, Raleigh Ray turned to greet the good samaratian "'Kin you make heads or tails out of 'dis, 'cause I am down right confused by 'dis sorry excuse for a map?"

To repay the stranger for his kindness, he briefly thought about buying the man a beer, but then saw he already had one in hand. "... and is 'dat a port, a lager, or one of 'dem beers 'dat's so thick it may as well be maple syrup?"

Just mentioning 'maple syrup' made Raleigh Ray's stomach grumble. And then the smell of the cooking hamburger patty hit him. When was the last time I ate? he thought to himself. ... So many questions!

All three of them, of course, had the same departure gate. The one they were now 20 yards from. But from the map trying to look down you wouldn't see it, unless you could make heads or tails of the map that is. The bar was agreeable to those who had chosen it because of how close it was to the departure gate. Of course they still had to wait until 1500 tomorrow for boarding...

As she waits for her meal Solène can't help but overhear two troopers lamenting the lack of straight lines on the terminal map. She didn't recall it being all the hard to understand, so looks up again to see what the trouble is. As the network of hallways and corridors becomes clear to her she smiles, then calls out to them.

"Looks like an underground mine to me. It follows the vein of the mineral you're after instead of the way that makes sense to most people. To make sense of it you have to know what they were after."

She studies it again, surmising that moving people to gates and other types of circulation patterns were the primary drivers.

Upon hearing Solène's explanation and alluring French accent, Raleigh Ray turned around, his curiousity piqued. He glanced at her face and then leaned in closely to Klinger.

"I think she jus' called us a pair o' Golden Boys in a round-about sort ah way." he wispered to the good samaratin. "Is that local slang fo' som' thing good or bad? ... And if it's good, I call dibs."

Both individuals are struck with an odd image of a well dressed individual. A young man in a suit and tie, not something you would expect a soldier to wear.

Alan looks at the ticket and holds his beer in a slight salute motion. "Lager, it's the worst i'll drink." Seeing the boarding pass, Alan sees that they are on the same flight. "Well, good news. The terminal is right over there. The plane doesn't leave until tomorrow. Good luck. Don't worry about the beer."

Alan will return to his food to figure out what he will do for the rest of the day. The waiting is the absolute worst part.

Raleigh Ray accepted back hia ticket with a respectful not. "Much obliged, buddy. And mah condolences about the sorry state o' your adult beverage."

Seeing the good Samaritan return to the bar, obviously playing it cool as far as the dusky, French-accented damsel was concerned, Raleigh Ray took it as unspoken sage advice. Just the same, he pulled out a comb from his overall's back pocket and perked up his amazingly coiffed (OOC:spelled that phonetically earlier; Oops) hair to look his best for the lady.

After grooming his upright, puffy hair... or what he managed to grow back of it after Boot Camp... Raleigh Ray bellied up the the bar along side his new buddy. He took the occasion to extend his hand and make more of proper introduction. "By the way, the name's Colton, Raleigh Ray Colton. You 'kin just call me Raleigh Ray."

After getting better acquainted with Klinger, Raleigh Ray took it upon himself to make some in-roads with the fair lady who spoke up a moment earlier. He flagged over the bartender and put in an order. "Hey there ... Esteban..." he started, pausing to read the bartender's name tag. "Get me what mah buddy here ordered, grub 'n' all... and see that lil' cutey pie over yondah'?" He gestured to Solène as innocuously as possible. "Send the fine lady a bottle o' your best wine... Wait, make that a box o' your most affordable wine... No, I don't want to look too cheap. Send her the second best box of wine you have that looks all gussied up, but between you and me is on the cheap side."

His eyes rolles up towards the ceiling as he reviewed what he just said, and then gave an audible "Yea!" to himself, pleased with how it finally came out.

Joe sighs as he sit up from his patch of couch. You'd think this would be a tad more efficient. Joe realizes he's both hungry and thirsty so he decides to head to the nearest hub for both. Hope no one steals my couch. Joe thinks as he walks away.

Once inside the Bar, Joe wanders up to the actual bar and looks over the menu. Not particularly fancy, but likely the best I'm going to get for the next long while. Joe thinks while deciding on what he wants to eat. Waving the Bartender over. "Hey, let me get the burger, with chili and cheese, fires... the hotdogs also with chili and cheese and a Chi-Town Brewery. Please and thank you." Joe asks while handing the man his card. once the transaction is complete, and he has his beer, Joe looks up at the monitors and looks for something interesting to watch.

Food is fixed and delivered. Solene gets delivered a glass of a pretty good sweet, but not too sweet white wine and a coupon for 5 more glasses. She's told it's on the guy with the hair and it's hers regardless.

The screen is a very boring military news program filled with propaganda pieces (some of which are entertaining, most of which are groan worthy), some generic news, and other bits of trivia from all over the Coalition States.

Asked about the TV, Esteban shakes his head. "Wish I could, but the terminal controls those not me. If you go down to the hostel halfway down the concourse they sometimes will rent you coffins with TVs in them. Cost almost double, but if you're bored enough, maybe it's worth it." This of course is the first any of them has heard of a hostel or coffin rooms - indeed any rooms. Any further inquiry about them, he nods. "Yeah, they are like 50 credits per 6 hours, 100 if it's the deluxe model with electronics, charging ports, and curtains, but they are better than the benches. Only suck thing is once you're in for the night, you're in. They charge you to get out and use the can. And I can't tell you how many sorry saps are sitting there begging people to at least pass out their belongings and end up sleeping in the lobby of the pod they had rented the night before. If you get out to use the can, take your shit and go ahead and reserve it immediately. Just be aware there is usually a line sitting there waiting on a pod to open up. What most folks do is reserve one, sit around and chill for a while. Play some cards, that sort of stuff, and then right before their time expires, go use the can and get ready for sleep, and then reup their reservation from inside it. It costs just as much, but it's kinda like a snooze alarm."

If anyone actually asks why there are no hotels or common use barracks, he shrugs. "According to all the travel plans I've heard of, they suggest you arrive day of your flight, at least six hours beforehand. Problem with that is with all you military guys, half of you have no place to go between AIT and your next duty station, and the rest are usually wanting to get a good seat for the ferry flight. Doesn't help every booking specialist suggests showing up a few days beforehand, without telling their greenies what's going on. The vets all use the coffins or arrive day of and dare the greenies to tell them where they are going to sit. You haven't seen anything till you've seen a full of himself greenie Private or god help him greenie Corporal try to stare down a blooded Sergeant or Warrant Officer for a seat on the transports. Funniest shit ever, as long as you're not the greenie."

Wine? For me.

Bouchard flushes when she learns the drinks, and so many of them, are from the fast talker with the big hair. Men didn't really make her flustered, she'd worked around men in the mines her whole life, but advances from men that is another story. Her reactions had always varied from flat out infatuation to breaking limbs. She was hopeless at relationships. Ever since she arrived at basic someone was trying to impress her, or worse, marry her. She wanted none of it. But free wine and a long layover, what the hell.

Giving a half-hearted wave to Colton she sips the first glass and thinks she'd better order more than soup.

At the mention of coffins, the miner's daughter tenses up. Being trapped in a small space was ever miners nightmare, paying someone for the experience seemed downright perverse. Why not just issue them field cots and sleeping bags if bunks were an issue?

Joe looks at his food appreciatively, before tucking into it. Joe looks up at the screens and sighs. Boring... Maybe I should have stayed at my apartment a while longer. Joe takes a slow look around the bar and makes note of the people in it. Woman, with wine and a confused look. Older looking dude, reservist? Young guy goofy hair, surprised they didn't make him cut it.

Joe goes back to his burger before looking to the Bartender. "Any Whiskey or Scotch?" Joe asks before continuing eating his burger.

As Klinger asked his question, Raleigh Ray noticed how much he was charged for the box of wine he just bought for the sly looking lady. His eyes bulged at the exorbitant price and gawked. "Gaw' dern! ... Wut' was that you was sayin'? ... Oh yea, robogames." It took a moment to regain his composure and focus. "Now personally from where I came from originally we didn't have no fancy viewing connections like that. All our videos were already years ol' by the time me 'n' my kin folk got to see them on disc, so the ones I like may be a little old by your reckoning. That said, I always liked Team Hendrick whenever they ran the robo-races or the obstacle course. Especially when Earnie Dalehardt Sr. was driving good ol' number 3, or when his boy Junior was out there with number 88. That was robo-racin' at its finest. Sure, the robot fights were good too, but ain't nothin' as pulse pounding as a good race!"

As he spoke, Raleigh Ray kept half an eye on the lady. The moment he saw the slightest acknowledgement with the wave, he gave her a coy smile and then retrieved his comb again. Bingo! he thought to himself. Now to turn on the ol' charm machine.

As he started to fluff his amazing coiffe, getting his ploomage high and mighty, his attention was diverted by the conversation between 'Medic' and the bartender. Huu?!?
High Command wrote:Asked about the TV, Esteban shakes his head. "Wish I could, but the terminal controls those not me. If you go down to the hostel halfway down the concourse they sometimes will rent you coffins with TVs in them. Cost almost double, but if you're bored enough, maybe it's worth it."
"No shit?" Raleigh Ray exclaimed, instinctively pocketing his comb "Medic, keep an eye on my piss poor beer and grub. I'm going to see about reserving us a couple of pod beds while the git'in's good!" Without hesitation he started to run out of the bar and towards the direction Esteban indicated. Five seconds later he returned and looked Esteban dead in the eye. "And when that box o' wine I paid for is empty, I want that empty box. ... See 'bout doggin' me for a midnight pee. I got a plan for that!"

Ever the gentleman, on his way running out the door, Raleigh Ray yelled across the room to Solène. "Hey! Frenchy! We got a place to sleep tonight!" It only occurred to him after he was running down the concourse to the hostle that his words could be taken as a clumsy come-on to the lady. Oh well, he thought to himself, finding himself prioritizing a warm comfortable bed over the prospect of a close encounter of the feminine kind with nowhere to take her other than a romantic bathroom stall. It was most likely either the bed or the babe; not both. Today the bed won out!

Frenchy!

Solène is so mortified that the man called her out like that and then ran off like a taunting boy that she doesn't consider the innuendo of his statement. Of course she knew the remedy for taunting boys. Perhaps broken legs was too gentle for this one, crushing his crotch with her Mauler power armor seems more appropriate.. As he races off she considers the ramifications of being called out for her nationality so early in this deplyment. She knew it would come but for a room full of people to hear was perhaps her worst nightmare. I'm definitely not giving back the wine. Turning her attention back to her meal the young trooper considers her fate. She has no regrets about leaving Iron Heart, but a lot of trepidation about fitting in with the "real" Coalition members. Sighing she leans back in her chair, C'est la vie.

Alan groans at the redneck and his way of speaking with people, when he turns to face the young lady. "Seeing how we are still in transit to our station, i'm sure an accident has happened to more than one soldier." Alan returns to his food and beer. That kid is going to get himself hurt one day. "Barkeep, I'll take a Whiskey, neat." Alan is going to enjoy one of the lasts taste of Whiskey that he might get, nice and slow. I feel stupid not asking for this before. Fearing that time was short and of critical essence, Raleigh Ray ran down the concourse towards the hostle that was mentioned by the bartender Esteban. In his mind he envisioned 20 Sergeants and 50 lieutenants all lined up to make certain their coffin beds we reserved well in advance and booking out the entire pseudo-hotel's accommodations.

After what seemed like a few minutes of running he began to wonder if this was some sort of wild goose chase or hazing for newbies. But eventually his prize entered his sight and Raleigh Ray found his way to the counter of the hostle. It was at that time that he bothered to look around and behind him, and saw that none of the others came with. He was all by his lonesome.

"Sir! Sir!" he said to the clerk as soon as he saw the person. "I'd like to make reservations for three bunks for later tonight." Ever the gentleman, like his mama taught him to be, though not fiscally wise, Raleigh Ray slapped down his credit card on the counter to pay for all three. "All next to each other if possible."

When Raliegh gets there he finds no line and only one attendant. The woman is hunched over some device, probably a phone or mini-computer. The attendant looks blankly at Colton and then sighs. She points to a sign. She points to a single headphone below it. "Listen if you can't read." She then goes back to looking at her phone.

"Perfect!" Raleigh Ray happily exclaimed with an idiot-smile. "I'll be reservin' those three premiums."

After securing the sleeping accommodations for the night (making sure they would checkout with plenty of time to make their flight), Raleigh Ray started to saunter his way back to the bar where he left his new buddy, Medic, and what's-her-name Frenchie. I should ask her, her name when I get back with the good news, he thought to himself, half day-dreaming about being showered with kisses for reward for his good deed. And then his brain betrayed him by switching to the image of Klinger doing the same... Raleigh Ray shook the day-dream from his mind and he continued on his way.

Upon his return to the terminal bar, Raleigh Ray already had his comb out, poofing up his coiffed hair. While not as magnificent as it used to be before the CS Army made him cut it for Boot Camp, the man did everything he could to restore it to its proper glory. With hair ready for action, he put on his best suave face and made his way over to the table where the comely lady with the French accent was. Seeing that she accepted the wine, he decided to hit her with his best pick-up line.

With a slight bob to his head like a chicken in slow motion, he strolled up to Solène. Here comes the lovin', in three, two, one. he cockily thought to himself as he made his final approach. "If I had to rate you from one to ten, I would rate you as a nine... 'cause I'm the one that you are missin'." Nailed it. He then extended his hand in friendship. "The name's Raleigh Ray. I can only imagine your name is as angelic as the rest 'o you."

When "slick the hick" walks up to her table Solène tries not to make a face, afterall perhaps he was just going to be kind and introduce himself. Then he opened his mouth.

She gives a long blank stare as she processes what he said. Not only was American her second language but this guy seems to be speaking some sort of code. And people judge me for my French accent? She thinks incredulously as she finally discerns what he is saying...and his intentions. Knowing that giving him a hard shut down would label her as the unit bitch and invoke all sorts of double standards she simply sighs and introduces herself formally, "I am PFC Bouchard and if you were indeed missing it would make this boxed win taste so much better."

She holds a hard look before breaking into a smile, "Now that's it's clear I won't be sleeping with you. Have seat if you'd like."

Seeing the redneck "casanova" return and attempt to make the moves on the french lady, Alan chuckles at the results of his attempt. Alan will take his whiskey and walk up to the pair, place his hand on Ray's shoulder. "Great moves there Casanova. A your resident Physician, I recommend you drink two beers and call me in the morning." Alan pulls up a third seat and looks at the young woman. "Names Alan, so who did you piss off to become acquainted with this ladies man?"

"Don't mind if ah do... but first..." Raleigh Ray jogged back to the bar and grabed his room-temperature beer and luke-warm burger he left behind earlier, then jogged back to the table. He then sat down as invited and took a swig from the beer. He grimaced at the terrible taste. "Aaaaaah! Hoppy and watery. Ya wouldn't think it possible to get both in da same bottle, but by gum, they did it!"
Alan Klinger wrote:Alan will take his whiskey and walk up to the pair, place his hand on Ray's shoulder. "Great moves there Casanova. As your resident Physician, I recommend you drink two beers and call me in the morning."
"Hey, ya never know until you try, Medic." he said in his defense. As Klinger settled in and made his introductions to Bouchard, Raleigh Ray moved on to his burger. With his first bite he paused, bracing himself for an experience as bad as the beer. I've had worse, he thought to himself, then resigned himself to another bite.

Joe looks at the bartender. "Yeah that'll do, make it a double." Joe watches the trio at a the table and chuckles as the Raleigh crashes in flames. I suppose it's one way to pass the time. Joe thinks as he watches the television half-heartedly. Joe finishes his food and sips his whiskey. Joe checks the clock and sighs. It's going to be a long night.

Relieved the corn fed man didn't take too much offense Solène relaxes slightly. Having some company at the table would help pass the time, when the medic shows up and provides some comic relief she is grateful. Although his question puts her off a little.

"Who haven't I pissed off?" She asks as she takes another drink of the wine and eyes Colton's hamburger. Seems more appropriate than soup. Turning her attention back to Allan for a moment she tries not to make things worse, "Getting transferred out of the regional defence force in the City of Iron wasn't easy. The price was having to put up with people like him," she indicates Colton with a slight nod of her head. Then she pauses, a little more seriously, "And of course duty in Old Chicago." Looking back at Colton she frowns, "Not sure which is worse."

Joe looks over to the small group talking and drinking. I suppose I could go make friends. With this thought in mind, Joe turns to the bartender. "A round for the house." Joe says as he drops his card onto the counter. "Oh another double whiskey please." Joe takes his drink and walks over to their table.

Alan listens to the young lady with interest, sipping on his whiskey. "Old Chicago is one of the oldests and still active deployments. I for one am looking forward to this assignment. If we play our cards right, we will have medals lining up on our chests and women, or men, lined up. Look at what all the other units are doing. 3 Divisions guarding Chi-Town? What do they have to worry about? Scuffing their boots?" Alan takes another sip of his whiskey when he notices the new addition.
"Hey there folks, Names Joe. You all heading to Old Chicago too?"
Alan will acknowledge Joe with his drink. "Hi Joe, take a seat. Wait, let me guess. Chicago Company, 3rd Rifle. I for one was hoping to get assigned to the medical evac, but at least i'll make sure their jobs are as easy as it can be. Name's Alan, Unit Medic."

Chi-Town Military Departure Terminal
May 30, 109 PA 1800

Status: Colton has three premium coffin rest units reserved for the next five hours and 45 minutes.

--------------------------------------------------------------

As Joe comes over, Esteban comes over with a double shot and a single shot, setting each down in front of Joe and Alan respectively. When Alan goes to pay for the second drink, Esteban shakes his head. "He covered it," he says thumbing towards Joe. The bartender looks to Solene first. "If you want something other than wine, let me know, you've got one drink of choice on this guy. Same to you Mr. Hair. Next
drink is on this guy."

--------------------------------------------------------------

Come early, the guy says. It'll be fine, he says. Idiot. After a night sleeping in a bathroom stall and the day shifting around trying to find his gate, Logan has finally arrived. And the most welcome site is a bar within sitting distance of the terminal. Better yet the smell of burger, chili, and beer waft through towards his nose. A woman and three men sit at the corner of the L-shaped bar. The woman looks vaguely familiar. Two of the three men are not hitting on her, and one seems to be stuck between body language that is after her and body language that is not. Whatever the case, the woman is only interested in her wine or mayber her soup. But all four seem to be talking.

The bartender is serving them and waves to a seat right beside them when he approaches. He's sitting next to the guy in a suit and tie (Alan). "Have a seat. What will you have? Menu's on the board. We've got a few things not on the menu like cheese sticks and roast beef sandwiches. 6 credits each. There's an audio menu right there if you need it." He points to a single over the ear headphone and a play button. As Logan puts his ticket away, the other four can easily see it looks exactly like theirs. Whatever flight he's on, the new guy is waiting for this gate.

(Make sure to describe how you are dressed - all of you - these are the last set of civilian clothes you have with you. Thankfully it's warm outside.)

A young man wearing sunglasses walks into the bar, looks at each of the four sitting at the table, and takes and stores a picture of their faces just in case he's too close to another bomb going off and gets amnesia. Around his ears and behind his sunglasses, surgical scars can be faintly seen still healing, with the rest of his face covered in minimal scar tissue despite having been in front of a bomb that blew up. The overalls he wears are grease stained, despite having been washed, with several major patches in places and small holes, obviously from explosives to those at least familiar with their regular use, in other places. Under the overalls is a black tee shirt with a small mushroom logo on the front and the letters "IYADYAS" ("If you ain't demo, you ain't shit" to those interested) over a larger picture of the same logo on the front. Under the mushroom they can see part of some more words, which when seen in full read "If you see me running. It means someone just tapped a keg or a bomb is about to go off, either way try to keep up!" Logan sets a folder down on the table as he sits down and a purple ribbon slips out of it before he tucks it back in. Looking to the bartender, Logan coughs a couple times to clear his throat and says with phlegm still in his throat "I'm thinking aboot having me a nice burger and some fries. Really anything not coated in nitroglycerin and grease and iron ore is going to taste like five star quality food to me. To drink, I'm guessing you don't have any Iron Ale here? If not, I'll be up for anything my new friends recommend, so long as it's nothing too hard." Logan hands over his cred stick to pay for his food and drink.

After the bartender leaves to fill his order, Logan picks up a napkin and coughs and hacks into it for a few minutes before he can talk more clearly, then he makes the introductions to each of the other four people sitting at the table. "Private Logan Wright, Combat Engineer. You look familiar, have we met before?" Logan says, directing that last part to Solene.

GM note: Alan can tell Logan has cybernetic eyes, and ears, and he can see the damage from the blast that is mostly healed and actually has pretty good reconstruction of the face which has fully healed. But it's fresh enough he knows it happened less than six months ago. He also seems to have swelling consistent with bad allergies.

"Well how do, buddy!" Raleigh Ray said to the new guy with the rugged face. "You sho' do know how to make a good first impression. I gladly accept you' offer. The name's Raleigh Ray Colton... You can jus' call me Raleigh Ray." He extnded his hand for a shake to Joe, then turned to the bartender. "Esteban, I'll take double shot o' whateve' my new buddy Joe is drinkin' here."

To make room for more libation, Raleigh Ray quickly finished his beer, but kept the bottle. Had just enough time to get a few more bites down before the double shot of whiskey arrived. In like manner, he downed that in a flash the moment Esteban served it up. "'Eh, I've had better. Don't hold no candle next to the white lightnin' my Uncle Dalton used to make back in the Ozarks."

It was then Raleigh Ray noticed another person meandering into the terminal bar. The man's fashion sense was impeccable! Overalls and a tee shirt; color picks and slogans aside, it was the same as what he himself was wearing! He had an instant liking for the man.

"Ha!" he balked with an open-mouth smile. "I assure ya, buddy, the lady is immune to even the greatest o' charms an' pick-up lines. Believe you me... I've tried! She shoots boys down so fast, I'm half tempted to nickname her Artie. Why don't ya sit down before the lady shoots you down. "

While he spoke, Raleigh Ray put two fingers into his overall's central chest picket with drew a small circular tin. Opening it, he filled the immediate area with the pungent smell of well-spiced chewing tobacco. He wasted no time in taking a pinch and putting it in his cheek. He then held the small tin out for the others. "Anyone want a dip? I'm buyin'."

At the opening of the tin, Logan's tearducts, still intact around his cybenetic eyes begin to well up, and he can feel his throat constricting. So he does the only thing he can do, do a half cough, half building spit clearing of the upper throat that sounds horrible (though nothing is really expelled). But it does the job of clearing his airway for the moment. It's also kinda gross.

This of course shocks Solene back to basic where some guy from Iron Heart would do that all the time. She eventually learned to tune it out. The whole training platoon did. It always sounded like it was worse, but he'd always wave off any attention. He said he lived on anti-histamines and rather enjoyed recycled air for how clean it was. One of the guys who was well read called him Gollum after some d-bee in a movie and book that would do the same sort of thing, though not quite.

Her table suddenly inundated with men Solène is a bit taken aback trying to keep up, They all talk so fast!

When the fourth guy enters the fray Solène has a flash of recognition but can't quite place him. Something in his face looks familiar but slightly different as well. When Klinger points out that he's had work done Solène tries to focus a little harder on the main facial features to place him. Ignoring Raleigh Ray, something she feels will be a regular occurrence, she decides to respond to the medic and newcomer instead.

"No apologies necessary. Having lived in the barracks nothing about men can shock me anymore...women either."

The sudden coughing fit shocks her back to basic training, Enfoiré! There is no disguising that sound. She smiles slightly at Logan, "Gollum, is that you? What the hell happened to your face?"

Re: Chi-Town Departure Terminal

Post by Logan Wright »

When offered a pinch of dip, Logan scrunches up his face in disgust and says "Ugh! No thank you, I'll pass."

When Colton talks about having problems eating ice cream, Logan will say "Don't you need a brain to get brain freeze?"

When Solene recognizes him and asks him about his face, he pauses to think for a moment before saying "I got to experience real combat during training. My class was going through our last field training exam prior to graduation, and I had already finished early when we heard over the radio that a real bomb threat at the ammo depot about a two kilometers away from where we were, so the trainees were shuttled back to the barracks while the instructors went to handle the bombs. I was thinking to myself that I had to go see this, so I snuck onto the transport in the confusion of everything and nobody realized I was with the instructors until we had gotten to the site. There was a heavy firefight going on with SAM's doing strafing runs trying to dislodge the terrorist group trying to blast their way into the ammo depot. By the time my instructors realized they had an extra body, they decided to make me useful now and discipline me later.

There were four shaped charges, which are charges that can be shaped to inflict greater damage against whatever it is shaped around. There were three other instructors, so we each had a bomb to disarm, waited for a lull in combat where we felt that eclips were being swapped out. But we were wrong. Two instructors shot down before they got half way to their objectives while the third made it to the bomb but was taking cover on the other side of the low stone fence the bomb was next to. I went to the next bomb, and paid for it with this beauty...
Logan says as he shows off the scar on his shoulder from the firefight. "But I ignored the wound to disarm the second bomb, went running off to the next one where the instructor had been pinned down. I found her slumped over with a hole in her helmet almost dead center, so I hopped the fence and almost immediately had to drop to prone in order to not get hit by the fire, but it also made disarming it harder and it took me a little longer to get it done, but by that point I was now sporting a new wound on my thigh. I limped my way to the last one where I was hit again in the side. I shake it off, but the pain is starting to get to me. All the time spent with the other three bombs, plus my hands were now saking from the pain, meant that I failed to disarm the bomb and it blew up

The blast, while had been shaped did little damage me, but it was the back blast of the debris that broke through l woke up a week later in the hospital only to receive non-Judicial Punishment, then awarded the Purple Heart and a couple of others."

Raleigh Ray listened intently to Logan's tale of triumph and tragedy.
He winced at the intense parts. He held his breath for the gritty combat.
He knowingly nodded at the bitter-sweet end.

Finally, a question occured to him. "So its brain freeze that makea you do that throaty thing?"

Raleigh Ray blinked a few times, wondering if Logan was unconscious of the noises he occasionally made. "Hmmm..." he intoned, stalling for time, absently mindedly nodding his head.

"Ya know, when I was a young'in, I had a blood hound named Tootsie. My Ma' called 'im that 'cause he would fart... like... fifty times a day! Funny thing is, ol' Tootsie had no sense o' smell. Was deaf as a post. We were pretty sure he had no idea what was goin' on under his tail."

He took a moment to spit a little in his empty beer bottle. "You remind me a little of ol' Tootsie. ... Loved that dog." he ended with a little melancholy in his voice.

Joe sits quietly with the group. His intention of making friends stalled with a small case of anxiety. What was I thinking? Joe thinks as he sips his whiskey. Demolitions, Medical, and I'm not sure what these other two are... except the one is desperately trying not to cringe at the others ham-fisted flirting. So pretty typical of a unit from what grandpa used to tell me. Joe sighs before speaking up. "So has anyone heard about our CO?"

"You remind me a little of ol' Tootsie. ... Loved that dog."
Alan can only look in amazement at the sting of letters coming out of this mans mouth. How the hell did he make it past puberty? "Ray, do you think before you speak, or does this gift come naturally?"

With the new person joining the table, Alan is pleased to see a new face.
"So has anyone heard about our CO?"
Alan finishes off the second round of Whiskey. "I have not. But that's a good idea." Seeing the barkeep and remembering an old adage, bartenders hear everything, Alan will call him over. "Esteban, it would appear that we all are in the same unit. Got any info?"

"What unit?" When someone says it, he nods. "I don't know down to the platoon levels, but I know Chicago Company is run by Major Charles Emerson. He's a five year vet of Old Chicago. Chicago is part of 2nd Battalion, and I've actually met its Command Sergeant Major. Her name's Grimm, and she's a tough one, but kind enough. She comes through and gets drunk with me here on her trips through. They moved her out during Tolkeen and put her back afterwards. She used to serve under Emerson actually, back before the war. Emerson stayed in Old Chicago, and she got rotated out. She's under some Lt. Colonel now. She said the name, but it didn't stick."

Logan lets out a low whistle when he says that Major Emerson has been in old Chicago for five years. "Five years?! Holy crap, I didn't think they kept anyone at a post for that long. What did he do to deserve that?" he asks in amazement, his conversation with Colton pushed to the back of his mind.

"Hey, you wouldn't happen to know who the quartermaster is? I want to try and get my requisitions in as early as I can for my extra gear that I need."

He nods at Logan's comment. "Some people stay because they are being shit on. Some stay because they are that good and want it. From what I know, Emerson has a chest full of metals and is next in line for Lt. Colonel. Maybe he's bucking for Colonel Buldoc's job as Brigade Commander is my guess. I like Emerson though. Good fellow. Not stuck up like a lot of officers. You can tell he's been out there in it. Hell he bought CSM Grimm's drinks last time they were both through. How often does that happen that a Major buys drinks for any enlisted. But I can tell you they saw each other as comrades in arms, not officer and enlisted. I've seen that look enough to know it."
He laughs about the comment about the quartermaster. "Tell me about supply when you rotate back through. CSM Grimm always says Supply in Old Chicago has one job - theirs and god help you if any one else's job gets in the way of it. Better hope whoever did your initial paperwork and company paperwork was good."

"I'll be sure to remember that. To me it just seems like typical bureaucracy, or in other words, inefficient." Logan retorts back.

Listening quietly Solène takes note of the bar tenders impressions of her new commanders. Hopefully, they were the type who recognized ability and loyalty, not heritage and politics otherwise it would be a long tour. The idea of being stuck in Old Chicago, and surviving, for five years does not sit well with her and she involuntarily takes a big gulp of wine. However, her mind wanders to this CSM Grimm. A high ranking enlisted woman who managed to impress her male counterparts and earn the respect of command. I could learn something from her, Solène thinks to herself. She resolves to take extra care in observing CSM Grimm if she gets a chance.

Leaning back in her chair she listens to the banter and laughs when appropriate, trying to blend in without saying too much. She knows she has a propensity to be outspoken, something her basic instructors tried to drill out of her, for now she tries to follow their advice. Although, her best attempts never last long.

"A man has to speak from the heart, good doctor, or he ain't no man at all." Raleigh Ray answered with a mock toast of his drink, than taking a swig. "I don't trust people who don't shoot straight, two-faced back-stabers, all o' 'em"
