Bouchard steels her resolve as the big alien come screaming down the hallway toward her position. As a power armor pilot for this unit she knows her job. Handle the big targets while the others mop up the little frakkers. She doesn't like being in close against these things, they're fast and their claws are vicious. Best handled at rail gun range. However, she's not afraid of a fight and extends her blades for a slashing blow.

Her mind flashes back to combat school where she only got basic training. She was supposed to take advanced hand to hand training to help her in close in her power armor but was passed over. She recalls the look on the fast talking southern training officer, from Lone Star somewhere, with his ridiculous drawl that could barely qualify as American. It was smug. We don't want the Quebekers to get too uppity by teaching them to fight proper, he said. Seriously? Being the outsider might result in her death in this fight....probably make that TO pretty damn happy.

Joe is concerned... this is turning out to be a one of the worse days he's ever had, and now he has a twelve foot tall monstrosity sandwiching him with the Mauler that Solene is piloting. Before this the worst things Joe ever had to deal with were over privileged rich kids who's dads were generals or majors in the Coalition Military. A superficial issue at best, but when you're the grandson of the top general in the country... you don't see a bunch of trouble unless you go looking for it. Joe mentally shrugs. Gonna have to get through it anyways, and that big one doesn't seem to want to just up and die on it's own. Joe thinks as he lines his Pump Shotgun up with the creatures head and pulls the trigger.

With all the chaos and pandemonium, the quick, agile, Juicer-like monsters brought a flash of Raleigh Ray's past to the forefront of his thoughts. Memories of when the juicers came to his small mountain town in the Ozarks. The blood they let, the fires they lit, the members of his family being slaughtered one by one in rapid succession. He still remembered the gleam in one of their eyes as she took joyous delight in murder and mayhem. Raleigh Ray could still feel the heat on his skin of his burning Ozark village... Savage drugged-up monsters... They all deserve to die! All they know is how to kill, and take, and brutalize, and leave tattered ruins in their wake. That day the juicers left a hole in his heart filled with nothing but hate and contempt for them and any of their kind.

The shreik of Klinger brought Raleigh Ray back to the here and now.
Alan Klinger wrote: "O MY GOD! HELP ME! IT'S GOING TO EAT ME! I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE! I DON'T WANT TO BE HERE!" The combination of the odor and the creature right in front of him Klinger insistingly grabs his last grenade and pulls the pin.
"NOOOOOOOOO!!" Raleigh Ray hollered at the suicidal action.

Immediately he stepped between Klinger and the grenade, hoping to shield the brain damaged medic from the blast, simultaneously closing distance on the monster... Not that he had far to go in these tight quarters. With a flick of his power armor's wrist, Vibro sabers shot out of the arms, which Raleigh Ray put to immediate use savagely slashing at the beast.

This is really bad! Got to keep Bloomer focused! Despite the overwhelming sensation to scream his head off Daryl keeps his cool and looks at his compatriot next to him. The white monster's second jaw is chittering and chattering only adding to the terror of the moment. Bloomer seems about ready to panick full bore or pass out. Damnit that vibro knife is inches from your hand Bloomer!
A few month ago
Boot camp hand not gone well. Daryl might have the grit, and toughness to make it through but his heart was not in to killing. To make matters worse someone had gone and blabbed to high command about his psionic powers that did not exist. Daryl was sent in for special training to hone these powers. A quick chip and crainal explosive, and then daily beatings for when he did not manefest anything. They thought he was withholding... Daryl's last day before they executed him for being a traitor was a pleasent one, the morning beating and a quick session with an intelegence officer designed to coerce a confession. The officer asked Daryl over and over, " Tell your parents why you are such a traitor, and unwilling to use your power to further the goals of humanity?" Followed by an hour out in the mess hall...
That is where he found Boomer, in the chow line. Bloomer looked a bit worried and quietly asked him, " Hey man, just show them a bit of your psychic power, I know you are not a traitor, for sakes you are from the Iron Mountains man!"

Daryl sourly shook his head, " I wish I was a second rate psychic or a freaking melter... If I could do anything I would Bloomer... Thats just not me. I am Daryl Grimes."

Bloomer looked at him in wonder, " You really are not a psychic are you? Fucks sake man, they are going to kill you!"

Daryl nodded sullenly, " Yeah... Then this nightmare can end."
Daryl hisses at Bloomer, " Hold it together man... This shit is bad, but hope is 2 inches from your right hand. Grab your goddamn knife and cut us out. Look at my Bloomer! Look at me. Take your knife and cut this shit off of us. Help is on its way, we are almost out of this nightmare!"

Lucius swears at the speed which the deebs close the distance. They are vulnerable enough to their rifle fire, but without Marshal’s well placed grenade they may have been overwhelmed. As it stands, a single smaller deeb and its massive cousin have reached the point Mauler. From the radio chatter and vocal outbursts he didn’t need to look back to see they’d been surrounded engaged on both sides, though clearly Klinger was a becoming a problem. ’Can’t believe we’re doing this shit for a dog boy. Quebec has it right, we don’t need the twisted mutants. They’re as bad as these deebs far as I’m concerned...still the boss’s orders say get him, so we get him.’
It Can Always Get Worse
As command moments go, he’s in it bad. It’s his job to get the job done above all else so they’re here under the rock, in a hive, with too few numbers and lacking specialized equipment. This day is neck and neck for his worst ever and the fact that he recovered better than new from his injuries means he may have a new first. It’d been blind instinct that led him to jump and cover his cousin just like he called out orders and evaluated the tactical data without conscious thought now. Not that it’d done Alex much good back then. But despite the months of suffering he recovered better than new. Stronger and more capable than he’d been before the limo was shredded by laser fire along with his lower body. Hell, thanks to the skill and resources of his grandmother, he still looks fully human and has none of the myriad symptoms that plague most who have had such extensive replacements, he was just better. No phantom limb, not out of sync movements, no sense of alienation. Some is due to his own psyche being so accepting, likely due to watching his father’s recover.
Bouchard stumbling from the impact of the giant forces him to discard the notion of keying Klinger’s private channel, saving time he calls out over the main channel. ”KLINGER! Get your shit together soldier. You don’t want to be eaten, then don’t let it eat you! Bouchard! Get her steady and put that thing in the grave. That’s an order!” He is sighting down his rifle even as he screams at the panicking medic and steadfast power armor pilot.

Then the blast of a grenade from the rear sounds just before he sends out another invisible burst of laser fire at the deeb.

He knows his shot found its mark, but damned if the glistening black deeb seems to care. He spares a quick glance over his shoulder, but the smoke and dust plume are too thick to make any sense of what happened, aside from the fact that the grenade went off right in their midst. ’I swear, if that Klinger I’ll make damn sure he never touches another explosive under my command.’

Combat Patrol: Merged Paths
Date: July 1, 109 P.A.
Time: 18:05:30; Sun should be setting soonish.
Temp: 70 degrees in the tunnels.
Weather: Clear topside;
Ley Line info: There is a ley line within a half mile.
Location: Mission area - base camp; see map: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ghkJl ... sp=sharing

As the fighting intensifies, there is a blur of action; but for everyone, there is a moment of clarity as Klinger pulls yet ANOTHER grenade! It bounces into a divet made by one of the tails of the creatures and has its force absorbed by the resin itself. The only effect is spraying the area in cloud of resin shards. Interestingly, the creatures do recoil from this, but more as if from pain or discomfort than any sort of hazard. That hesitation ends up in the slaughter of all creatures surrounding them.

The group pushes through their initial position after slaughtering all that remain. Even as they come up, they can see the creatures massing for another charge, but they seem to be waiting on something. It's not long before you figure out what when the biggest one yet, white, and deadly looking, steps between two rock pillars, squeezing through it. Coiled around herself like she is, she has to be at least 20 or 30 feet long, possibly more. In the lights of the mauler she almost glows. Your mind immediately assign her the role of queen of the hive. For Maddocs and Steelcreek, however, there is another thing. The psychic presence of this creature is immense. Neither has ever experienced anything like this. Everyone hears a gutteral animal like voice in their minds. Words are not what they experience, but a feeling instead. It can only be translated as 'More meat for the eggs! Bring them to me!' Accompanying this is a scream that resonnates in the chamber and one they feel in their bones (All 8 soldiers of the Fighting Joes make a fear check [Spirit]).

Solene, as she glances around, can see one man stuck against a wall, and another below him, holding the stump of his arm. The man on the wall has one arm free and a knife in hand, pressed there by the fellow with the missing forearm.

For Grimes, the scream of the damned is followed by the white glow of what must be an angel. An angel of death and destruction, but one that is a wonderous sight for himself. A Mauler, with its lights blazing and vibroblades out comes into view, and he thinks he can see infantry behind it. He's partially blinded so he doesn't realize his words had an effect on Bloomer until the man is on his knees cutting Grimes's arm free. But looking down, he seems that Bloomer had to make a sacrifice to do that. He cut off his own left forearm when he could not free it. But Grimes' right arm is free, and he now has a vibro-knife in his right hand, pressed there by Bloomer as slumps down, holding the stump of his left elbow.

It looks like the irrational me is still as cowardly as ever. I need a shock to bring the two halfs together. The last grenade, it will hurt like hell, but it should help. The grenade goes off just as the scream is heard by the team. The sudden shock and the impact of the grenade brings Klinger back into focus on the situation.

What the hell. Klingers ears are ringing from the impact. Yea, i'm going to requisition stun grenades from now on. "Bear two six, bear two ten is operational once again. Checking team life signs. There is a lull in the fighting, so Cpl. Draper addresses the group, calling out Klinger to not throw anymore grenades, causing Logan to lean forward to whisper to Draper "Um sir? That was his second grenade, so he should be out, unless he picked some up that we are not aware of... But on that topic, the grenade blowing up pieces of the wall did seem to have some sort of effect, despite not harming them directly." Remembering the big guy, Wright grabs his last remaining grenade to have it ready to throw when from the opposite direction, an even bigger creature appears, trying to communicate telepathically with the drones it would seem. His blood froze as he saw the gaping maw of the creature and he thought that he should be able to throw his grenade into it's mouth. He lets the rifle fall to his should sling as he turns the body, grabbing the pin and pulling it out, then as he begins lifting his leading foot and kicking it to throw the grenade like he was pitching again for the Iron Heart Iron Giants at the CS Invitational Championship, Solene unleashes rightious fury upon the queen. At the same time, three warriors rushed up from behind them, past Colton. Wright had already pulled the pin, and while he probably could replace the pin outside of combat, he didn't have that luxury, so he did the next best thing that he could. He threw the grenade 12 feet past the three warriors, catching all three in the blast and blowing them away. Logan also heard the distinctive sound of shrapnel on hard armor and saw bits and pieces off of Colton's Mauler, scratching the paint.

As the last deeb thrashes on the ground and finally dies the chaos seems to calm in an instant. It isn't really quiet, resin still slowly rains down around them from the grenade, the actuators from the maulers are audible with every small movement, but the feeling of the tunnel changes for a brief few moments. There's the part where they all scan the area, waiting for the counterattack but when it doesn't come somethings come happen automatically. "Ammo check!" He calls out over the fire team channel. It shouldn't be required, but much of what an NCO does to keep troops inline and fighting shouldn't be required. When their new mutant tag along speaks up about being nearly drained Lucius reaches into his harness and retrieves a pair of e-clips. His was still over half full and he knew the sniper weapon could drain power at a prodigious rate. "Just be sure to make'em count"

He turns over his shoulder to address their medic directly, but does it more to preserve the effect of being spoken to as his actual words go over the fireteam channel again. "Private Klinger, you should have one grenade left. Make sure you leave it there. If it leaves your tac harness without one of this team taking it from you I'll make damn sure you wash out and can't even find work patching up deeb criminals in the burbs. You'll be out of the CS altogether if you endanger us like that again..." He allows a moment for his order to sink in before keying over the channel again, "That understood soldier?"

A few more moments pass before the expected counter attack begins to press in on them. Then, they hear the roar again and just like before it pierces through them. There's not a soldier there not filled with dread, it's just a matter or who can push through it.

As the horde swarms in, Lucius curses himself for being distracted by disciplining his squad as it prevents him from readying a grenade when they are far enough away. Instead he picks a target carefully, firing off a burst.

As the team had cleared the last room, Joe considered his loadout and decided to swap Ammo types from micro grenades to scattershot. As the creatures move in closer and the Queen brings forth its mighty psychic might, Joe sees the situation for what it is, dangerous. Joe couldn't tell anyone anything about bugs other than he didn't like them and that was how these creatures were translating to him, but he figured if the big bugs die, the lesser bugs will likely have a problem. So that's what Joe goes to do. Joe turns away from Solene and aims at the Praetorian so he can to put two shots in its giant head. Joe doesn't know where these creatures came from, but he's never been more certain that they need to die.

As the blast of Klinger's grenade showered hot resin all over the place, bouncing off the armor plated hull of the Mauler power armor, Raleigh Ray said a microsecond prayer of thanks that the blast didn't take him out in the process.

"Klinger, if we survive this, I'm goin' ta size you up for an armadillo emina!! An' it won't be dead when I do it!! ... Squirmy feet an' all!!"
High Command wrote:... Your mind immediately assign her the role of queen of the hive. ...
No sooner did the threat leave his mouth did Raleigh Ray felt some ungodly presence behind him. The psychic energy permeated his mind from the terrible Queen. He felt a shiver run down his spine as he knew that if they did not succeed, Queen's psychic words would be no threat, but instead a terrible fate made real.

But as before, the strong headed Ozark boy's resolve held true. Maybe not as much as before... and certainly not without a tiny squirt of fear-pee... but hold it did permitting him to stay strong in the face of the enemy.
Lucius Draper wrote:"Ammo check!" He calls out over the fire team channel. It shouldn't be required, but much of what an NCO does to keep troops inline and fighting shouldn't be required.
"I'm long... And I'm strong... And I'm down to get the friction on! Raleigh Ray replied on the open channel, both answering the call and psyching himself up in the same breath.

Placing his faith in the others to take care of the queen in front of them, Raleigh Ray turned his back on the bleach white horror show bitch, and turned his attention the enemies closing in on their rear. Setting the reticle of his plasma cannons' aim on the biggest monster he could see of the bunch, the simple Ozark boy let loose the fury of his guns hoping to burn them all to a cinder. A split second later he blasted at more monsters using his Mauler's rail gun, peppering another with a hale storm of hard-hitting tungsten.

"Ammo check!"
Shit, that's a qood question. How the hell much do I have? klinger checks his mags. 3 full mags, good. I'm sure someone can use them right about now,./i] Alan checks the weapon and sees hes only used 9 rounds total since this whole op started. "Bear Two Ten, 3 full clips, 51 rounds in current clip, no grenades." I actually haven't used nearly as much ammo as I thought I did.
""Private Klinger, you should have one grenade left. Make sure you leave it there. If it leaves your tac harness without one of this team taking it from you I'll make damn sure you wash out and can't even find work patching up deeb criminals in the burbs. You'll be out of the CS altogether if you endanger us like that again..."

Just last week
Daryl Grimes has his face full of the tastiest sandwhich he had ever eaten. Tri-tip, and a hearth cooked open face loaf, with some kind of cheese sauce. " Mpphhh Bloomer, this is amazing!"
Bloomer looks up from the grill flipping over another juicy tri-tip, and he dashes it a bit with salt. He pushes up his glasses and crooks his thin long neck. " Whew, glad you like it Daryl, I figure we need one last meal before we go living off of rations."
Daryl chuckles stuffing some more of the hot which into his mouth. " Mmhuu where did you learn to cook man?"
Bemused Bloomer too chuckles, " Right here in Chi-town, my family has this little deli mart, in the upper quarter. I have always wanted to make sands, maybe when I get out."
Daryle Grimes smiles, stopping for a moment. " You know how my family are bakers... Maybe we can go into business together. I know folks."
Bloomer flips a peice of meat high into the air and it lands with a sizzle, " Ha! Sounds great man, once our tour is over lets do it!"
Daryl now blinded by the so called angel, looks through the haze at his friend. Not the flipping arm man!. He looks at his knife in one hand, a grenade just a few inches away, and at the nearby pods. The closest one to Bloomer ripples. Something is about to burst out.
" Hang on Bloomer, help is almost here. Roll to the left, I am going to do something stupid."
Grimes reaches for the grenade and rolls it in between the two closest pods. I hope it does not kill us. The burster or the grenade.
Throwing a grenade at inbetween the nearby pods, hopefully without catching he and bloomer in the blast, 3 total minus what ever other penalties, be gentle.

"I got your meat right here!" Solene shouts through the Mauler's loudspeaker as she grabs at her crotch then sends an armor piercing missile toward the giant alien creature. Before the missile even hits she chases it with a hail of rail gun fire.

Even as she tears the queen a new egg-laying hole, the Quebecois power armor pilot keeps her cool under fire, "Watch those grenades, it looks like there are friendlies in there. We need Hunter's body in tact or we'll get shit from the Sarge."

Combat Patrol: Merged Paths
Date: July 1, 109 P.A.
Time: 18:05:36; Sun should be setting soonish.
Temp: 70 degrees in the tunnels.
Weather: Clear topside;
Ley Line info: There is a ley line within a half mile.
Location: Mission area - base camp; see map: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ghkJl ... sp=sharing

Lasers, bullets, plasma, missiles, and grenades fly into action! Steelcreek drills the big white monster in the head, but she simply takes it. Colton focuses his action to the rear and lays into the big warrior big time, but doesn't drop it. Bouchard sends a missile up the queen's gullet, but the big monster TAKES IT!! The follow on rail gun fire peppers her to death and she falls, shredded in half. Grimes cuts a grenade free and tosses it. It hits a rock and skitters across the resin to the wall across from him down the little passage. It explodes and takes out three drones. And finally Marshal turns and empties hot lead into the big one, cutting him down! But then the other creatures act! Three rush forward and attack Marshal, Draper, and Maddocs! Only Marshal's manages to connect with the close combat specialist. Marshal hits the creature square in the head as it charges, but it takes the blow without complaint or effect. Then Wright lets loose his grenade and slaughters all three of the warriors, and scuff's Colton's paint.

As the soldiers glance around as the last explosion sound stops ringing in their ears, they see only viscera and dead aliens. Marshal recovers from being dazed by the alien creature that hit him, and the group takes stock of their situation. Klinger immediately rushes around to the wounded and finds four humans and one dogboy. He also sees that one of the humans has what looks like a hand on his face, and there are dead ones at the feet of Hunter and the soldier beside him. The soldier who is cut free is missing his left forearm and the soldier who has a knife stuck in the wall beside him has one arm and a bit of his torso free.

OOC: Klinger make a Healing roll to stabilize Bloomer. And you guys are in RP mode. Cut the soldiers free and start making your way out.

As soon as the queen crumples, Solene charges forward with her Mauler's vibro blades extended, "Secure the hostages! Destroy any eggs, we don't want this shit to spread any further. Klinger get your head out of your ass and make sure the hostages aren't compromised by alien mind control or some other shit."

She then begins to slash the carcass to bits. She doesn't want some weird resurrection or healing to take place. Once the bits are sufficiently small she uses the Mauler's plasma ejector to burn the remains for good measure, filling the chamber with terrible smelling smoke.

After being satisfied that the grenade only scuffed the paint job, Wight tells Colton "Don't you worry about the paint job on here. If need be, I'll personally take care of it after we RTB."

Logan then walks over to Klinger and waits until he's finished treating the wounded to ask him "Klinger, do you have any containers to collect samples in? I'd like to collect some samples to analyze." If Klinger has any spare specimen containers, first scraping some of the resin off of the walls and labeling it as such, filling two containers with it, then filling two glass test tubes with the blood from one of the the creatures. Wright asks Cpl. Draper "Do you think command would want us to bring back one to dissect?"

After the rescue Doc takes care of Bloomer and Grimes, Daryl Grimes flashes him a slight smile clearing trying to cover something up. " Uh, thanks Doc! Yeah I am pretty sure we can limp out of here. I really don't think the D-bees got our minds infected with anything so their is no need to exterminate us." Daryl secures his vibro knife and 1 grenade. He seems out of place in his skivies but sometimes that just what happens when you get encased in resin about to be a Mcdeadboy. Grimes helps Bloomer out letting his friend lean on him for support. The fighting done, Steelcreek surveys the queen's chamber and suppresses a shudder. Worst. Moster hole. Ever. Moving over to the eggs, he notes that they are not broken, but rather peeled open, and that the dead hand creatures don't look anything like the bigger creatures he and the other troopers had encountered.

Hearing Grimes' description of how the hand creatures attached themselves to their victims, and seeing one man with one of the things still clinging to him, he shudders. Now that's an unpleasant thought. What could they have been doing?

Grimes stops what he was doing and leaps in front of the Mauler putting him squarely between the soldiers infected and the Mauler's smoking plasma gun. It doesn't take much to see what they are about to do! Gripping his knife and 1 grenade he squares off with her. " You will not blast those men so long as they are alive. Get them the hell out and get what ever is inside them out. Blast them with plasma? You better be quicker than me, and a good shot because this grenade is going down your pipe." Grimes smiles easy, " Or like I said we can try and save them. They would do the same for any of you." With out a hint of fear in his voice, he deadpan says, " So what is it going to be. The easy way or the hard way?"
"We first have to verify that you all are CS Human soldiers, which includes a thorough medical evaluation at a proper medical facility, which is not here. You want to help your friends, then what you are doing is not helping!"

With the battle over, and the acid monsters slain and dead on the ground, Raleigh Ray began to become aware of the racing of his heart. As the high of battle started to wane and his pulse started to slow to a normal rate, he started to become acutely aware of another thing. Is chin was wet and some moisture was creeping down his chest.

Glancing down from within his power armor Raleigh Ray noticed that his dip cup head ruptured again spilling his contents all over himself in the innards of his armor... By no coincidence this gross malfunction coincided with the blast of shrapnel he was showered with, compliments of Wright.
Logan Wright wrote: After being satisfied that the grenade only scuffed the paint job, Wight tells Colton "Don't you worry about the paint job on here. If need be, I'll personally take care of it after we RTB."
"Yeaaaaaaaaah..." Raleigh Ray replied with an unseen snear on his face beneath the helmet of the power armor. "... Thanks, Wright. Thanks a lot."

Knowing full well that the mess was mostly his own fault, Raleigh Ray didn't press the matter any further. Mostly because other concerns took priority.

Seeing Bouchard busy killing off the monsters' unborn babies, and Klinger tending to the wounded, it donned on Raleigh Ray that some of them might not be able to walk out under their own power. Looking around at the alien resident all over the place it came to his mind that he might be able to cut some of it into long strips, making an impromptu polls.

"Klinger, if you need, I think I can make some makeshift litters fo' the wounded so we can carry 'em out."

But then, all of a sudden, things unexpectedly got interesting...
Grimes wrote:... With out a hint of fear in his voice, he deadpan says, " So what is it going to be. The easy way or the hard way?"
Quickly he went to Buchard's side and started to flank Grimes. "Whoa, whoa! Hold up there, Hoss! Don't be goin' makin' a bad day worse by losin' your head an' gettin' your ass kicked twice.

As things get tense, Bouchard doesn't back down, instead she takes a step toward Grimes the Mailer making a loud thud as its massive bulk moves forward, "Relax. Before you blow your load early. I was referring to the infectious creatures. Not the humans. However, if you wish to be burnt to ash, then I will do so. It is obvious you are not in your right mind, coming at me with your tiny prick."

In basic training they learned that alien bacteria and diseases killed more people than d-bees and demons. Stuff the human immune system had no idea what to do with. This guy could be a hatchery for more creatures or just insane from fever. Either way it was probably enough to justify burning him for most officers. Unfortunately, Solène knows she would come under tighter scrutiny because of her background. Torching potential friendlies definitely reinforces the traitor stigma.

I am happy for the RP...but would Grimes have even heard a radio transmission? I did not use the loud speakers.

Grimes drops the grenade and it goes tink tink tink, not even armed. He grins at Solene, nice and easy. " I know standard ops procedures, its only makes sense to have the mauler burn anything." He gestures to his lack of helmet or comm unit, " There was no way for me to know exactly what you were up too." He looks back at his fallen team mates and his injured buddy Bloomer, " Sorry for the theatrics, I usually abhorror violence, but my team mean everything to me and I had to make sure they receive medical attention and a fair shake." Grimes sheilds his eyes against the Mauler's bright lights. " If you guys could each grab a man, and get us out of here I would be much obliged. The names Daryl Grimes by the way." Grime's goes and helps Bloomer back off the ground and the two will limp to whatever egress the team leads them too.

Klinger is helping people out of the hive when Grimes pulls his stunt. yeup, need some therapy. "Grimes, stand down. I will not allow any friendlies getting torched today. Come on Grimes, lets get everyone out of here and let Mrs. Peachy Mauler do her job. We'll get you guys back to base, run some test, and get you guys a hot shower."

Klinger will seal of his suit and go into environmental mode. "Bear Two Six, There is no way to identify any possible infections. I recommend MOP 4 for Bear Team. This will allow us to shorten quarantine, and reduce the risk of contamination to healthy units."

Klinger will continue to monitor the team for abnormalities.

Raleigh Ray was about to open the face plate of his Mauler power armor now that the drama was over... That is until Klinger suggested the rest of the team use MOPP Gear. The prospect of getting some nasty other-worldly disease or bacteria scared him to death! "My God! If these demons had acid for blood, I can only imagine the kinds of parasites and nasties that actually survive in 'em!"

The thought of something like that getting in him made Raleigh Ray shudder. Think of what something like that would do to his glorious hair! ... Unimaginable horror!

Seeing the rest get to work, and not seeing how to implement his idea of making litters for the wounded, he moved his Mauler PA into the nesting area and picked his once sous-chef, Hunter. With great care he lifted the fallen dog boy and proceeded to take him home.

"You did good, Hunter ... You did good."

As Raleigh Ray walked, he gently petted the grievously injured dog's head, not sure if Hunter was conscious or even aware of what was going on at all. "... You did good..."

Fourth Quarter 2017

Nothing against Lieutenant Samuels, but the briefing seemed short and missing details. 2 Rifle Platoon was to be leading a reinforcing convoy through Old Chicago. Old Chicago, where the buildings that were knocked down yesterday, rebuilt themselves tomorrow. Ley line activity was so strong there that tracking the anomlalies seemed nearly impossible. Was it any wonder that the intel was not that good? The contours and features of the map keep changing. If Chai was going to find the Black Market of Chicago, it certainly was not going to be this patrol.

Lt Samuels had insisted that Chicago Two's Command APC be the lead vehicle in the convoy. Chai had done his part to secure what he could. Additional trauma kits. Extra e-clips. Binoculars. The idea of moving into a zone, a kill zone, just did not seem right. Being the lead vehicle just screamed for someone to shoot them dead in their tracks.

Buildings were still standing close to the convoy route. Sure the Lt. had mentioned the buildings were still standing, but these were right along the road way. which could also mean that there were things that had moved in since the CS’s last visit. Intel was spotty, which meant that anything could be there. It was also likely that the 118th did not have the means to do much else other than use other platoons’ forward observers.

“Lieutenant, will we be bringing mortars with us? Maybe some of the armor have shells we could use to penetrate the ground?”

Not really waiting for the Lt’s answer, “I would say that the above ground structures are less of a concern. We need to see and be aware of what is below ground. Running sensor arrays into the ground would give us fair warning and maybe some other relative data.”

“Also, with the One Eighteenth having been there already, are any of their suits' IFFs active or transmitting?”

As he spoke Shi began to realize other factors that had not been discussed which gave him further reason to pause and take concern. The missing were really missing, as in they were not registering. Suits deactivated, or the signals were too far away to be received. Black Market would want the suits intact, which would mean that some of if not all the trackers would be active.

This mission was already at worse and probably headed to a shit storm at the next possible moment.

Above ground, signals and communications were at their optimal best. Below ground, even 20 feet, and the signals comms were masked by all sorts of interference. The more he thought on the situation, the more he realized that the Black Market would have very little to do with this particular section of Old Chicago.

Shi would spend his entire time in the field, engaged in keeping communications up and mechanical equipment operating. When necessary he would fall in and back up the various squads’ medics as they treated casualties and injuries. As much as he possibly could on top of everything else, he would try and keep Bear-2 as fully operational as possible. Bear 2 was still his exit strategy.

By the time Bear Squad was coming up for air, Shi had managed to run commo wire down the primary shaft the squad had descended. It took some work to convince Dansk to let him do it, but after he explained that communications with Bear Two would not reach the surface otherwise, she agreed and Shi went down the shaft harness, rig and all. Once he had the sensor array setup several hundred feet down, it was not long before chatter from Bear Two came through loud and clear.

Still in the harness, Shi had taken the near lifeless form of Hunter from Colton and ascended the shaft as the squad was gathering itself and catching its breath. With Klinger and himself in MOPP 4, they had done the full triage on hunter at the shafts opening. Time had been crucial.

Fourth Quarter 2017

Dina ate quickly at the briefing, knowing time was essential. The briefing didn't go into all the details. Chicago Two and Three were to recon the area for the operation and call for buildings to be dropped. Our Scouts were already in position as well.

The Platoon was traveling in two Mark V APCs and 4 hovercycles. As they loaded up additional briefing was given about the 118th needing rescue. They rolled out as the rest of the convoy joined them. They were the lead unit.

Things did not go so well as the lead Mark V was stuck by missile volley. The vehicle spinning out and coming to a stop. Dina grabbed her rifle and spilled out with the others, finding a position with cover immediately afterwards. As TAG, Dina radios Lieutenant Samuels, "Can we get support fire from the base to clear the area?"

She watches as Bear two take out several buildings and Colton gets the APC fixed up. Shortly afterward, they all load up and the support fire from the base clears the area with no remorse.

They move out and make their way for the Op base.

As soon as they arrived, the team unloaded and started patrols while the support crews setup camp and fixed the APC. Recon duty was not fast, it was not exactly exciting either. It had to be done in a way to not lose more people. They went in buildings sweeping room by room for whatever they might find and took out the squatters or other entities in the buildings. Dina spent the rest of the time providing sniper support for the operation after the hive was found. We didn't need something else coming in to make it worse.

Cassandra rolled out of her bunk as her sergeant strode down the corridor outside yelling. She sat on the edge to collect herself a moment, stealing up her mental shields. There was an anticipation in the air, an...edge. Something was different.

Cassandra had learned to shower at night, after a hard day, so all she had to do to be ready was hit the head for morning necessities and then pull on her uniform. She was out in the common area well before the half hour call was up.

The squad was marched down to a briefing room where they met up with the rest of the platoon. There were sandwiches and drinks available, and Cass grabbed her share, sitting and eating as the lieutenant and sergeant briefed them.

They were going on their first combat patrol!

Cassandra swallowed and took a drink of milk. She looked around at the others. She hoped they would all return.

“You will be operating in a section north of downtown,” the lieutenant said. “It shouldn’t be hot, but we haven’t made our presence known there for a few months, so you will be doing recon in force. Clear the buildings so the crazies with the explosives can drop them. Anyone found squatting is shoot on sight. We have scouts in position already, so intel will be forthcoming. We’ll convoy out. If there is an ambush, keep your heads low and push through. You have some UAR-1s in the zone in support should you need artillery, and aerial drones for air support. Now suit up!”

Cassandra cleared out with the rest of her squad from the Second Rifles, jogging down to the armory. She pulled on her body armor and checked out her weapons, making sure the e-clips were charged and secure in place. Within fifteen she was loaded up in the APC and rumbling out of Fort Resilience.

They drove out to the Bridgehead and stopped as they were joined by three other platoons and the heavy artillery and SAMAS.

“Maverick, you’re on spotter. Put that uncanny knack of yours to use!”

“Yes, sir!” Cassandra said climbing into the turret. She listened to the rest of the briefing from there. Apparently the 118th Engineering had taken some casualties when demoing the buildings, so they were being sent in for reinforcement, and to help find the bodies.

SAMAS roared overhead as the convoy rumbled down the highway and into the depths of Old Chicago. Cass kept her head on a swivel and ran the sensors, but she focused more on opening her mind.

And that was when she got that nervous tingle at the back of her skull.

“Lieutenant!” Cassandra called down. “Something’s happening!”

“What are you talking about, Mav--”

And then the lead vehicle exploded as it was hit by missiles, swerving and blocking the road.

The lieutenant was already listening to radio chatter.

“Both sides of the road, sir,” Cass said helpfully.

“Everyone out!” the lieutenant yelled. “A Squad right. B Squad left. Form up behind the armor. No one is getting out of here until that vehicle is fixed and moving again. Until then, we’re exposed. We need to give them cover and clear the corridor.”

Cass grabbed up her gun and pulled down her helmet, her face hidden by the distinctive skull motif of the deadboy armor. She took cover behind the armor and the vehicles.

“Where’s it coming from?” someone yelled.

Cassandra closed her eyes. She reached out her mind, doing a quick search of the building. “Fifth floor. Three windows from the west. Put a missile up there.”

“Who the hell are yo--”

“Just fucking do it already before we’re all fucking dead!”

The big power armor practically shrugged and raised a forearm, sending a mini-missile into the window. The explosion silenced all returning fire.

“Well I’ll be…”

“You’re welcome,” Cass muttered.

The rest of the fire around them seemed to be thinning out as well, and they appeared to have gotten the lead vehicle moving again. The lieutenant’s voice came over the radio yelling at them to load up, and soon Cass was bundled back inside the APC.

The rest of the trip to the command post was uneventful. Cass disembarked again and watched for a few minutes as the combat engineers starting setting up the command structures.

“Maverick! We’re not done working yet! Think about lunch after you smoke some D-Bees!”

“Yes, sir!” Cass said, running to catch up with her platoon.

“We need to be sure these buildings around here are clear. Maverick and Ricardo, on breach.” The lieutenant tossed Cass a bandolier of flash grenades.

Cass took a breath. She knew this drill. They’d practiced it. It was her role, and she was comfortable. As they approached the building, Cassandra reached out with her mind.

“Entry clear,” Cass whispered.

Ricardo swept in with his ion blaster, Cass right behind. As expected, the foyer was clear. They split up into two teams to cover the rooms on this floor before rejoining and heading up the stairs. The building was uneventful until they reached the third floor. Someone had put in some kind of reinforced door.

“Feds,” Cassandra reported. “Trying to lie low. Combat mage. Some zealots. Shit! I think they noticed my scrying!” They were scrambling for their weapons.

Cass felt something pressed into her hand. “No time for subtlety,” Ricardo said.

Cass looked at the fusion block in her hand. She shrugged and hit the detonator, then stuck it to the door as everyone scrambled back. Cass yanked two flash grenades off her bandolier.

The explosion was deafening, but perfectly placed, blasting the steel door across the interior room. Cass darted forward, staying low, and threw in the grenades. She averted her eyes as they exploded in blinding light even as Ricardo swept around her, his ion blaster leveled. He fired and moved to the side. Cass stayed right where she was outside beside the door as the rest of the team rushed past her into the space.

“Clear!” Ricardo yelled.

Cassandra entered and looked down at the dead bodies.

“Good job, Maverick,” the lieutenant said, patting her on the shoulder. “Let’s finish this and get back for chow.”

They filed back into base camp after clearing the building. Cassandra was ravenous. Breakfast had been meager, and using her powers always made her hungry. She would even tolerate MREs. She plopped down onto a bench and ravaged something that claimed to be meat and potatoes.

“Slow down, Mav,” Ricardo chuckled. “We aren’t going back out for a while. Enjoy.”

Cassandra looked over at the handsome Latino. She held up on her fork a piece of mystery meat dripping with gravy. “Enjoy?” she asked, arching an eyebrow.

Ricardo laughed and Cass grinned. But he had been right. They were tasked with lunch clean up.

“Relax. We’ll be putting laser holes in D-Bees again in a few hours,” Ricardo said.

Cassandra pulled her way out of the tunnels. She grabbed the offered hand of Private Tyler and let him help her out. Her armor was dented and cracked in places from the strong blows of the xenomorphs, and even had a few holes from where the acid blood had splattered. She could feel the minor burns where it had eaten through.

Cass staggered over to a building and sagged against it. She yanked off her helm and dry heaved what remained of lunch. “The stench down there! Ugh!”

Cassandra sagged back against a nearby building. Her hair was wet and stuck to her face. Private Tyler sank beside her. “At least we won’t have to fight any more down there”

“How so?”

“I saw them sending in the combat engineers. They’ll wire that place up to much it will take the building down with it.”

Cassandra pulled out her canteen and took a thirsty drink before handing it to Tyler. She felt a rumble, and then they watched in fascination as the building over the alien tunnels crumbled inward in slow motion. They both smiled.
