Marron: Visions of Battle

Post by Tribe of One »

Ulysses checked on the mystery woman again, ensuring that the sedatives were keeping her comfortable and that the calcium-boosters were having some effect. That nanite-fortifed blood Silver had donated was helping, too, the microscopic robot bugs spurring muscle growth and weaving reinforced lattices into Delta's underdeveloped bones.

"Well darling, looks like you're going to miss the show," the cyber-doc says, scanning through the sensor feeds Kim had rigged up along the walls. He watched as the Blue Hand Raiders and Marron's defenders traded words -- or so he assumed, lacking an audio feed to go with the video -- but wasn't surprised when it did no good. As the Blue Hand leader dropped her glowing blade to signal the attack, Ulysses began spreading out first aid supplies, readying the triage center for the first wave of casualties.

"Tell you what, Delta. We get out of this, you're gonna be hearing a helluva story when you wake up."

Interlude time!

During the course of the battle, feel free to pop into this thread to narrate a scene that occurs during the larger battle. This could involve your character or some of Marron's other defenders, or even some of the bastards on the other side. Have fun, and if you need some inspiration, feel free to roll 1d4 for a theme:
  • 1-Tragedy
  • 2-Victory
  • 3-Love
  • 4-Desire

When your Interlude is done, you may immediately take +1 XP, as well as either +1 Benny or an additional Adventure Card draw.

Feel free to made additional role-playing posts in this thread (end of quarter is coming up, if you're a little behind on your post-count), but you only get the XP and Benny/Adventure Card once.

New Mexico/Marron
D-Day
Round 0
Theme 4 Desire
[dice]0[/dice]
Darius Ullyses Malone stood in the hatch of his Zone Ranger in the rear of the Blue Hands column as it launched its attack. He had delivered a shipment of Red River Combine techno-wizardry weapons to the raiders and decided to stay around and watch the battle.

As the attack commenced and the lead vehicles charged the small town, the distinctive whine of heavy rail guns opened up from the turrets. But instead of the familiar thunk of spent uranium rounds on armor, specks of electricity peppered the van of the attack and exploded into corruscating balls of lightening that engulved the fore of the assault.

“They have a techno-wizard,” Darius mused, recognizing the magic. “Let’s find him or her.”

Darius attuned his magic optic system in his combat mage armor, zooming in on the walls of Marron. He scanned them until he saw the glint of arcanite and gems. He zoomed in further, making out the form running along the parapet in familiar combat mage armor.

Wait. Too familiar.

Darius zoomed in further. It wasn’t a man, but a woman by the distinct swell of breasts in the construction of the armor. And not just any woman. Darius recognized that armor.

“Tara. Tara. At last, I have you!” Darius exclaimed. “Oh, you thought you could run from me, from our betrothal, leave me at the altar like a cuckold, embarrass me in front of our friends, in front of your father? HE PROMISED YOU TO ME! YOU ARE MINE!” Darius screamed.

“And I will have you, Tara Turner. I will have you regardless of your wishes. And you will be punished. But you will be mine!”

Darius switched on the comms in the Zone Ranger. “Lady Runnin. This Darius Malone of the Red River Combine. There is a techno-wizard up there defending the walls. I recognize her armor. We have...history. I want her taken alive and delivered to me. If you do that, the Red River Combine will be ever so much in your debt.”

OOC: I will take the +1 Benny. +1 XP

Re: Marron: Visions of Battle

Post by Jack 'Bullet' Jones »

Jack Jones had his hands full. This isn't his type of fight, really. Heroic, pitched battle against almost insurmountable odds. He favored the backroom poker game, an angry loser calling him out in the street, and his favorite move, the "telekinetic holster lock" and easy draw and shoot. And that's if he even needed the help.
He had more on his mind than just the trigger. He had a bunch of greenhorn kids and adult pacifists nary a week into learning gunplay doing their best to keep their muzzles pointed downrange. Maybe even, if they're lucky, they put holes in some of the bad folk bearing down on them to bring death and destruction to the only place they can call home. "Tazden, SLOW DOWN! Jammin' that trigger's only gonna make ya miss faster. Breathe and squeeze, kid." The young Marronite manages to temper his exuberance, finds a target, and squeezes the trigger. A hoverbike pilot does an involuntary dismount, then is soon fed on by a swarm of sand sharks. "Atta boy!"

"Flash" Bullock was having a bad day. Again. Every day was bad when you're a one-eyed ugly runt of a man. He could barely afford a bottom of the barrel whore on account of his disfigured face, and forget about saving up for some cyber.
He lost his eye a year back. He'd gone in on a card game with a couple other Blue Hands up against some slick looking sissy of a man. The man ended up with all their chips on his side of the table. That bastard had to be cheating, right? Nobody's that good at cards and that good looking. Well, Bullock went for his knife and was about to charge, figuring to cut the price for cheating out of the gambler's hide. Unfortunately, a flash of light reflected off of the waitress' serving tray, and he reached to cover his eyes.
With a knife in his hand.
Even his nickname is a reminder of how bad this guy had it. If it weren't for bad luck, he'd have no luck at all. The one thing he took pleasure in was inflicting the same kind of pain on others. If I have to feel this lousy every day, everybody else should too. He took a special joy in tormenting the Marronites when he was in town. He was amped up to head back and inflict some extra punishment on the Marronites and whatever "protectors" they went and found. When the call to charge went up, "Flash" moved his Triax Hunter forward at top speed, running alongside a mountaineer with a turret-mounted railgun. As the horde gets closer, Flash's sensors ring out. The railgunner next to him just had his head split open by a particle blast. He tracks the blast back to the wall, and sees..."BULLET JONES!"
In as lucky a shot as he's been able to pull off probably in his whole life, he sights in and launches a volley of missiles, knocking the gambler from his perch and silencing the gunfire from that section of the wall. "I'm gonna find you and pluck both your eyes out, you rotten sumbitch! I'll make yer misery last a year afore I kill you!" A strong EMP blast from nearby knocks out his sensors, leaving him oblivious to the magma worm pit directly in front of him. The Hunter goes down and face plants into the wall of the pit, managing to sever the connections in the helmet of the unit. The immobilized robot armor soon finds the pit collapsing in on him as the rest of his comrades charge forward, heedless of his now-dire plight. He manages to crack the seal on his suit and begin to climb out.
In a flash, "Flash" Bullock comes face to face with the gaping maw of a hungry sand shark. "At least I killed Bullet Jo-" His thought never finishes, as the creature lunges for the one eyed Blue Hand raider.

Bullet Jones, unaware that a former grudge-holder has just met a gruesome end, tips his hat to the Fennodi preacher. "Much obliged, pardner. Ah reckon' that'll put me right back in the fight. Good thing it wasn't a better shot. Might'a taken both me and Tazden out!"

Re: Marron: Visions of Battle

Post by Jasco »

His toe hurt. It was swollen, discolored, and had something strange growing out of it. Three days of discomfort with his toe threatening to burst through his combat boot had finally given Jukka enough reason to free the monstrosity from its confines. The wind felt good blowing across his engorged digit. And the appendages that resembled hairs seemed refreshed, frolicking in the breeze. If they were happy, he was happy.

Except for his little tryst sneaking off five nights ago to deflower the homesteader's daughter and something biting his foot, sticking with the old raider had been a winning strategy. Whereas people always thought him too dumb, slow and weak to be useful, it was easy to have purpose in the old man's presence. His voice was soothing, forceful and always right. Him and his cousin Mondo even earned the nickname 'Super Bash Brothers' from their recent exploits. Now they were on the brink of knocking down another town and much glory was to be had. Jukka couldn't wait to revel in the newfound wealth. He would be another town closer to being able to afford the bionic conversion he needed to go back to his hometown and make a mess of the governor and his army that stole their farm and killed his family.

They had come to a full stop and that leader lady was giving a speech. Blah blah blah, blah blah blah... Jukka thought quietly to himself, drowning out the actual content. It was much more interesting to wiggle his exposed toe and watch the hairs dance in response. Lost in its rhythmic mesmerism, Jukka was quite surprised when the barrel of the cupola-mounted rail gun jerked to life, jabbing lightly into his ribs. Thinking it was just an isolated incident, he was proven wrong as the gun's erratic behavior continued. "Mondo, you see dis? What 'appenin'?" Jukka asked his cousin. Even less interested, Mondo simply rolled his shoulders in a lazy shrug and gave his standard response, "Ask Starik." ((nickname meaning "creaker" or "old man"))

Before Jukka could figure out the best way to get Starik's attention without damaging his prized vehicle, their seemingly omniscient benefactor had rolled down his window and told them of the developing situation. "Oy fellas! Ain't sure, but somethin's glitch'n on the rail gun! Controls goin' haywire! Best if'n ah transfer you to Paco's rig." Both sets of eyes immediately fixated on the monster truck at a stop next to theirs. But Paco's rig smells like wet socks. Jukka thought to himself but knew better than to protest. Instead, he waved his cousin on and the two of them dutifully relocated.

"What you doin'?!" Paco's crew yelled down to them as they climbed the ladder onto the flatbed weapons platform. "Starik said to." Mondo replied, jerking a thumb back at the roundabout, and was greeted with general understanding and several knowing nods. Mondo was assigned to man the spear-gun and Jukka the oversized flamethrower. Now the excitement was palpable. Leader-lady was going to finish her speech and they were going to be able to rampage. Paco began revving the truck's engine, sending spouts of flame and acrid black smoke out of the exhaust stack. As the smog grew, those on the flatbed weapons platform, quickly became masters of a new game: 'who can hold their breath until leader-lady gives the go-signal'.

Fortunately for them, they did not have to wait long. The signal came and the monster truck lurched into motion. The new guy on Paco's crew... whatshisname... wasn't ready and tumbled off the back. With all eyes fixed forward at Marron, all the excited hooting/hollering, nobody witnessed his fall, nor did they hear his screams or see the six mounds of sand consume him.

As they closed on Marron, the defenders' weapons came to life. Missiles, rail guns (both mundane and magical) peppered the Blue Hand forces. "Shoot anythin' comin' from Marron!" Paco commanded over the loudspeaker. Vague and not particularly tactically sound, Paco's crew nonetheless gleefully joined the cacophony of mayhem. And leaped at the possibility of blowing something up. Rail gun rounds and laser mounts barked to life. First, it was determined that they were woefully out of range to substantially harm Marron (or its defenders), but they quickly transitioned to firing on the volleys of incoming missiles. One of them even scoring a lucky hit, exploding the munition before it reached its target. Jukka and Mondo could only watch and exchange forlorn looks as their weapons were designed for very short range.

It wasn't long before the rail guns needed reloads and not long after that, ran out of ammunition. Starik would never had let that happen on his rig. Jukka thought to himself as he tried to look around for where their elderly commander had gone. Scanning the battlefield, he was unable to find the distinctive roundabout. But what he did see was that their attack was starting to run into some difficulties. The lead elements were firing on each other, three wrecked vehicles evidence of the blood feud manifest on the battlefield. And the defenders seemed to be bringing about more firepower than leader-lady had promised.

A magical explosion sent both man and hovercycle tumbling end-over-end over Paco's rig. For a split second, it didn't make sense. Magic tended to be shorter range than technology and they were far from the front lines, closer to the rear of the main formation. "10 o'clock! Damn mages turnin' on us!" Paco's voice is heard over the loudspeakers. As one, Paco's crew turn their weapons on the TW Zone Ranger whose starfire pulse cannon is still steaming purple. Try as they might, their weapons ricochet off some sort of magical protection, creating little more than a beautiful tapestry of blue on the deflection field. Jukka and Mondo even add their minuscule efforts, bathing the field in flame and plunking a harpoon that careens uselessly into the sand.

Oh no. Jukka thinks as the cannon points directly at them and the deadly purple energy hits them. Everything goes white. It feels like floating. And then it does not.

Through blurred vision, Jukka's eyes open. He is on the sandy ground. Sideways. There is a dull pain in his chest. A dozen yards in front of him is Mondo. Was Mondo. His eyes are open but empty. His legs are contorted unnaturally. And he is impaled by the mounting bracket of the harpoon gun he was manning. Stupid Paco. Can't even mount his weapons right.

He thinks the ground moves from beneath him. Yes. The mound IS moving. Passed by him because one of Paco's gunners is making more of a ruckus, trying to make a run for it. Bloody. Violent. Efficient. It is just a matter of time before he is consumed too.

He is hungry. No, not correct. His toe is hungry. Yes, that sounds right. Jukka looks down at his foot and sees a gruesome picture. One of Paco's other gunners landed next to him. Now there is only half of him. Tentacles... twelve of them now... Are, consuming him? How does a foot 'eat'. No time to wonder, movement has drawn the attention of the sand mounds. Jukka tries to sit up. Dull chest pain explodes into sharp chest pain. He must lay back down. Nothing left now. Sand mounds come closer. Jukka closes his eyes.

Then nothing.

His foot moves. He thinks. It is still moving? Jukka opens his eyes. A snapping maw is inches from his face. A sand shark. It would be rending his flesh if it wasn't for the many tentacles wrapped around its body, entangling it. Eating it?

Jukka looks down because it is away from the horror of seeing a living thing being torn apart and consumed. His foot, his leg look to no longer be his. Wrapped in layers of writhing tentacles, it migrates up his body, covering more and more of himself. Jukka knows he too will be consumed too. His other leg. His midsection. His chest. His arms. And finally his face. He too will be consumed. He thinks?

Rise. Hungry.

Action Dan stood screaming at the top of his lungs in the back of Dr. Sprockets combat buggy. "Go, Go, Go Sprocket! I wanna get to town before all the killing is done." He quickly looked over the jury rigged camera harness he wore to capture "Dans Eye View" shots then moving from it to the buggies various articulated camera mounts. 'Everything working Sprocket? This is the big scene man, real fuckin villains man, protectin a whole town of radioactive d-bee scum! This'll be our best movie yet!"

Tom and Zam, his "sidekicks", were unfazed by his exuberance. They'd seen it from him before and the crazies mood swings did nothing to effect their unsettlingly calm demeanor. Besides Dan didn't think of salvage and loot as anything but props so they got a bigger share than they otherwise would. "We're sure.." "..there will be.." "plenty of killing left..." "when we get there." the brothers replied. Alternating parts of the sentence with no noticeable pause. Only they and Sprocket knew if the two were really brothers or not. The partial conversion borg mercs had met the Dr. as patients and left as employees.

"Not the good kind, I want the proper villains! We can kill regular d-bees anywhere."

"Danny, baybe, relax ok. We're gonna get to them I promise. And this pictures gonna be a blockbuster. But hey look over there, good second act stuff in shooting some dismounted simvan. Then go in for some sweet melee kills?"
And it will be some sweet footage but that wasn't what Dr. Spocket was thinking of. Riding on the flank of the amassed army of raiders and mercs the cyber-docs camera drone had a birds eye view of how the battle was really going. So maybe killing and looting some simvan and whoever was sniping from the hills, if they lived, was a better plan. Turning twords the dismounted tribesman his passengers began to fire.

Not wanting to hit their unexpected ally Blurre breaks radio silence briefly Thunderbird relocate, please assist simvan near you

Glad to get away from the heavy weaponry he'd been lucky enough to avoid so far Seswarick gains altitude to search out the monster riders. Seconds latter the marronites manning the NEMA robot begins pounding the hordes robot contingent with missiles, turning his former position into a firestorm. Spotting the simvan off to the flank of the army he finds them pinned down in some boulders by a circling war buggy and several bikes. Boosting his speed and lobbing long range blasts at the bikes sends the survivors scampering for the safety of the horde but the buggies turns into the boulder field, it's gunners scoring some hits on the simvan. Targeting the vehicle the stormborn lets loose an emp blast closely followed area blast, locking up it's systems then bouncing it off a boulder and sending the occupants tumbling to land exposed and unready only a few short yards from the vengeful blades of their former prey.

Knowing better than to try and convince an angry simvan to solve a grudge peacefully, even if he had the time, Seswarick turns back into the horde. There's a legion mole in there somewhere. Once they realize that he may need help getting out.

Looking up groggily Dan sees two simvan bash out the brains of one of the twins, he could never tell them apart. Then he hears the crunch of a boot beside him and a hand roughly pulls his head back by the hair. A vibroblade hums near his ear...That's not in the script.. No. Cut! End scen…

Re: Marron: Visions of Battle

Post by Orrin Truthseeker »

Orrin rests his back against the southwestern parapet, sweat streaming down his face as he struggles to catch his breath.

He considers blurrs message over comms that had sent a huge portion of the hands magic force his gunning directly for him.

I know I said I was trying to draw attention away from the children Blurr, but that might have been a bit excessive... he thinks, breath finally starting to come at a normal pace. He smiles at the thought, knowing that he wouldn't have had Blurry do anything differently. Luckily, Orrin had been able to get to the parapet before the hands forces, and a widely cast illusion had drawn many of them on to the sand, where both he and the sand sharks ambushed them at the same time.

None-the-less it had been a close call, and Orrin needed a few seconds to recover.

"Well done!" A poshly dressed graying man with an aristocratic air walks out from around a corner. He claps politely and continues, "I must say, I hardly expected that little twist with the the sharks and all. A very good show!" His smile doesn't falter as Orrin jumps to his feet and assumes an aggressive stance

Stupid to let my guard down! Orrin thinks, but what he says comes out calmer, if a little quickly for his shortness of breath.

"Leave now and it won't have to happen to you." Orrin says, fire forming above his open palm.

A fire flashes in the strangers eye. It's gone in a moment, and Orrin can almost believe it was merely a reflection of the fire he holds in his hand.

"Pardon, but is that a threat?" he says with a smirk. He waves a hand in the air, as though absentmindedly swatting a bug. "Nevermind that, I'm not here to to get involved in your little tussle here."

"Then who are you and what are you doing here?" Orrin asks, trying to buy time to recover from the last assault.

"I'm the Collector," the man says as he non-nonchalantly turns away from Orrin an walks over and leans on the parapet, looking out toward the heart of the raider assault force, "and Ive come a long way to scout a potential addition to my collection." his eyes home in on the vehicle from which Ronin, the leader of the blue hand assault forces, had given her speech. Turning back to Orrin, he adds, "But I was pleasantly surprised when I found another little bauble of interest in the area"

Orrin only needs a few more seconds to catch his breath. "And what is that?"

The Collector smiles, "You of course. Now, if you'll follow me."" he says, as he begins to walk toward the battle

Just then, ground shakes slightly and Orrin hears the sounds of the gate rending echoing behind him.

"I'm not going anywhere with you, and I don't have time for this! If you aren't here to interfer, make sure you stay out of the way. There is a safe house near the center of town that you can stay in until the battle is over" Orrin turns to leave.

"You misunderstood young man" the collector says, as his eye start to glow red, "I wasn't asking"

Suddenly Orrin feels a force assault his mind, like shard of ice inserted directly into his brain. He falls to his knees as his vision spins, and then fades to black. He his assaulted by images he can barely make sense of, but some how intuitively understands. A grackletooth in a wooded forest with its tail around its child's neck, strangling it. A Lyn Srial soaring over a plain with its mate draws a sword and plunges it into his heart. A Japanese human with a cybernetic eye, surrounded by burning vehicles raises a pistol and shoots his sister in the head.

Orrin gets to his feet and begin to follow The Collector, the supernatural red glow in to his eyes hidden by the red color his eyes already have from the thornhead demon encounter.

"Once you return to the battle, you will find the optimal time to betray your little band. Once they are all dead, and assuming you survive the ensuing chaos, you will return to the south gates and join my collection"

Struggling against the psychic might of the collector, Orrin pauses for a moment.

"Y.....Ye...." Orrin looks down to step over and obstacle and sees Seole, the Maronite youth who had just come into his own as a leader of one of the circles, staring back up and him sightless. The laser burn through his chest barely leaks any blood.

"NO!" Orrin's scream rips from his throat as the red glow in his eyes fades. He grabs Seole as he mutters a quick illusion spell, then runs off in 10 different directions.

The Collector merely stands there, frowning as the many Orrin's disappear from sight.

Re: Marron: Visions of Battle

Post by Rill »

Rill spins his Nymbu staff expertly, disarming and dispatching one raider after another. His students surround him, or those who remain, fighting with all they have. He is proud of them, and he is terribly sad for them all.

"Keep them in front of you!" he calls out. Each time one of the attackers begins to circle around behind, Rill calls forth a barrier to slow the enemy and keep them off the Marronites' flanks. The guns on the wall and of the other defenders are efficient, cutting down those foes his students cannot handle, and Rill watches them die. His students die. His enemies die. Everywhere, they all just... die.

They clear out the first wave or two, and then something inside of Rill breaks again. For as hard a life as he's lived, some part of him has stayed just a little naive. He has cleaned up after death for years, but until he met the 18th COT, he'd never been so directly involved in it.

His students look to him for guidance, and he finds he cannot give it. Nodding to one of their number, he says, "R'ael, you take charge. I must see to the triage tent, but I'll be back as soon as I can."

Without waiting for a response, Rill heads toward the tent, preparing to channel a healing miracle or two. Maybe some miracle will heal me, too.

Re: Marron: Visions of Battle

Post by Silverclaws »

Silver had been with Jack when they had found "Delta" She was weak and feable and needed for Silver to carry her back to Marron.

During the walk back, Silver had listened and recorded Jack as Jack talked about one thing or another. Silver was on autopilot. His motions and movement all synchronized by the nanites and his Pip Boy 3000. Silver's mind was certainly elsewhere.

Back to the visit of the Moon Goddess a few nights ago.
Moon Goddess wrote:"<Silver>, a child of the sky is coming. She will need you and your skills. Your time with the COT is at an end."
Silver wrote:"There is War coming. I can not leave the Pack."
Moon Goddess wrote:"The time is coming. You will go."
Silver wrote:"I understand."
Moon Goddess wrote:"You must find the one who holds your key."
When Jack and Silver had arrived in Marron, he had spoken with Ulisses. What he had been able to to do for the time being was to hand over a nanite infused blood donation. It was not enough for a full transfusion, but sufficient enough to get "Delta" stable and operating under care on her own. Silver left to prepare for the battle, praying that his thoughts on the new assignment would not cloud his judgement in battle.
