Actually, the MY Little Pony Game is basically Savage Worlds Lite.

Converting it to a full game is simple.

Tayna ran a great game where we fought undead and saved the kingdom through the power of friendship and excessive violence.

There is. Called Frightening/Impressive. I am thinking of taking it eventually, but I need to get Intimidate up, I believe.

I've always felt that Intimidate, like Persuasion, often works if the player roleplays it properly, even if the character doesn't have the skill.

Its one of those places where imagination overcomes the dice.

(You have two choices: You tell me what I want, or I make you tell me what I want. Only one of those choices does not involve you swallowing your own testicles.)

Without the skill you may still get the "+2 Big Gun" or position of power bonus. But you are still not in the same area as a skilled interrogator. You may ask the wrong questions, get only the answers you want to hear or other events.

If you want reliable intelligence the skills are needed IMO.

Also, in a face to face game, the mechanical skill can help offset a lack of role play skill, for example a shy, non-charismatic person playing the bard or whatever. I think there should be a balance, and bonuses can be given to the mechanics for good RP. Obviously, it's not as evident in PBP.

Re: The Local Tavern (OOC Chat Thread)

Sure there is. It's the difference between me skilled writers and the poor writers.
For example I think everybody can agree there is a wide margin between my writing skill and yours. So in a case like that if I'm playing a face I'm not going to be able to write it up as well as you would.

That is why skill matters. I see this a lot as a Gamemaster where my players will avoid skills they believe they can role-play around. That essentially gives him free skill points just because they're an experienced player over the new player's characters.

With my group the ones that are most often abused are survival and weapon skills. People I hang out with are really into guns and survival & camping activities. So they figure by role-playing and describing what their character does they won't have to make a survival roll or make a knowledge roll about guns.

Which means i would give them a bonus to their skill rolls for describing it, but if they don't have the skill, its called meta gaming. If i play someone with smarts d4 and i am in reality a physicist, you play to your character.

It's a tough call as a GM. Do you give players who role-play well the benefit of their skilled description, in the form of a bonus to their roll or not? On the surface you'd say yes, a player gives a dazzling piece of oratory, or comes up with a spectacular move that catches an opponent completely off guard, then you want to reward them for that. But then as has been said, what happens when you have the introvert player playing a bard? Are they less of a bard than one played by an extrovert player? Fairness dictates not. Penalising a character because their player cannot do the things their character can do would mean penalizing the wimpy guy playing the barbarian, the agnostic playing the cleric, or the clumsy person playing the thief, to the same degree you're penalizing the introverted bard player.

I think this always comes down to GM call. Over the years I've had a lot of games where I've had to encourage introvert players to contribute to the group. It can take time, but it's rewarding when they start to feel the confidence to speak up up and say what their character is doing. You have to reward players when they perform in exceptional ways, and I don't mean lucky dice rolls. But you have to remember that one players exceptional, can be something that would be quite mundane for a different player. Sometimes a player just contributing more than "I hit it with my sword", is noteworthy.

I've done this journey for myself. I started out a quiet and nervous introvert player, and over the years developed into a balances and outgoing player and GM. Some of my best work has come as a result of role-playing challenging conversations and thinking outside the box. I'm a million miles from the player I started out as, but I always try and remember that fragment of me whenever I'm faced with new players.

I know this doesn't really solve the dilemma, but in many ways there are no simple solutions, other than being flexible and trying to find ways to reward all of your players when they contribute to the enjoyment of the group.

Oh, Im not saying its a bad idea to have the skill and dice. For all fo the above reasons. I just like that Persuasion and Intimidate are two of the skills you can do without dice.

As a GM, I'm a firm believer in only roll dice when absolutely necessary.

I don't know. I guess I'd be a bit peeved as a player if Chad the Charmer never had to roll his d4-2 Persuasion and got a free pass, but I always had to risk it with my heavily invested d12 Persuasion because I made a face and he made a big dumb fighter. Rolling keeps things fair for everyone.

Yeah,

I was listening to a podcast the other day that suggests in SW Black you'll be able to use other Traits skills for tests of will.

So you'll still be able to make a face character but a brawny fighter might be able to Intimidate based on strength. Not sure I heard it right. But it could help with this sort of thing.

I'm pretty sure the dice roller hates my character. I haven't rolled this many ones in a long time.

Luckily, even with wild attack I'm hard to hit (Parry 7 and -1 to be hit, so they need an 8)

I am starting to wonder, I noticed this is a couple actions in a roll the dice have betrayed you.

There is the EP option for bonuses, extra bennies and stuff. Or maybe next round will be better.

You need to start dropping skills to d6, because the dice roller is coded to make them always ace apparently.

LOL. Apparently not (I have a lot of d6)

Statistically, d6 will ace more often than d8 (17% of the time as opposed to 12.5% of the time)

I just think its funny.

I also Spragued. Which is a not so local Savage Worlds term for Acing and then rolling 1. (Named in honor of Mike Sprague...who does this a lot.)

MLP:FIM is not Savage Worlds per se. But basically is, with fewer stats. (In the same way that Cortex is basically SW, though MLPFIM is not Cortex).

It plays fast and fun and you can have everything from the show: from epic battles against the forces of darkness, dragons and so on to the fiascos of Free Pie Day. And everything in between.

Our 50 Fathoms GM Jen has run it a few times on days when we haven't had enough players for the weekly run.

And now, do to a Facebook meme, she or Tayna are planning on running a mashup of Flash Gordon and MLP: Dash Gordon.....

Probably at Savage Sunday after the summer.

(This month's Savage Sunday had two sessions: Slot A was Savage Men in Black and Savage Flash Gordon and the evening was Savage Wierd Wars Rome and Savage Rippers. The Rippers game took a few of my store bennies despite there being no combat this adventure....) The theme this month was Zombies! Next month it's Hot Fun in the Summer (so summer, heat, fire, or vacation themed adventures are preferred...)

I was asked for a summary of what the situation is so here are some bullets I hope to clear things up with.

Situation:
  • The Liche, is under water, trying to sinc the hero’s ship from beneath.
The Ogre is currently under mind control and being forced against his will to attack and stop Lysennia from using magic or doing anything.
The two ships are moving apart at a speed of 1” per turn.
Some of the players and all of the living sailors have decided to jump to the enemy ship and abandon the original ship.

OOC Comments
RFT wrote:As the anchor drops the ships suddenly and quickly begins pulling away from the each other. Within moments the distance is enough to be a risky jump.

As the battles tide turns the Lich turns his mind towards trying to figure out what the most profitable method of success would be. Climbing under the water the Lich disappears bellow deck.

But I have not had good experiences at larger ones so $2,000 for a crowded convention I may or may not get a good game in is too much.

This is why I love Origins. Hanging out with some amazing friends while waiting for the next game. Almost a dozen game designers in this pic alone! If you can make it, this is one of my favorite cons.

This was the scene every day....game for a session, then go hang with a ton of friends.

Playtest. Comment. Brainstorm. End the night with drinks and munchies and conversation.

John Arcadian and his travelling Tarrasque show. (That's the red crate.) Angela Murray and the Gnomes of Gnome Stew. Robert Everson and the Encoded Designs games. (Circle of Six and Relic Hunters are both great!) Darcy Ross talking Numenara with Eric "Weregator" Bontz, Noor Bontz, and Ellen Rockett. (Jim McClure, PK Sullivan, Emily, Chris Sniezak, Phil Veccione, and Senda Linaugh are just off camera). The Flanagans (Tom and Thomas) from Knights of the Night. The high will last for a few days...

Then I can get back to cleansing the world of the threat of Fire.....

It does not, that is why we have the Open RP area. So you guys can RP and interact even while the pace slows down for combat.

But again I understand the frustration for being locked down and apologize.

Did I miss something, how old is this brat? (Still, he ordered an ambush so even if he's 8, I'm good with ending him.)

No you didn't miss anything. Lysennia heard the outburst about his mother so is trying to provoke him. ;)

I am not sure I understand. Are you splitting off from the group to go watch the over watch or to kill some of them?

PS: You last roll broke and did not have a label, so I am not sure what it was for.

Tier slides back into the shadows, nodding to Danyar.

Hoping that Sroxl and Angis will keep the attention of the watchers, the Brinchie moves to get the drop on a few of the crossbowmen.

I'm not sure what happened either. It happened because I kept exploding the dice. The invalid codes are a mis-type that I can't delete properly.

Tieronar is just trying to move up on the guys aiming at our team

I realized that I originally typed 1d4 for Stealth instead of 1d6...

LOL, right now Lysennia does NOT want Tieronar with her....

Bradon is probably the best bet.

Tieronar cannot wait to be out of this city.

Pretty sure he hates everyone here that he did not arrive with.

Corruption and politics is in the very soul of mankind. When cities form so do they.

your coming out will properly startle you new allies

Oh, the criminals who tried to ambush us.

Not exactly allies. Just people we aren't going to try to kill right now.

Tier still wants to burn them with fire and then scatter the ashes.

But right now, that would be inefficient.

Gang. thanks for the gameplay. I've been discussing this campaign with some of my local players and I've decided to leave. I've been finding it frustrating to wait days for the story to move on and the NPCs just haven't inspired creative roleplaying for me.

And the focus on the site towards "pay for advancement and goodies" seems to be counter to the local Roleplaying groups we have, so its just not my thing.

But the other PCs have been fun to interact with, and I had a good time for a while. But that's waned over the last two months.

So, Have a great time saving the world. It's been entertaining playing with the other PCs.

(Greg, we can catch up later).

Greetings All. I am going to bow out of this game. The enthusiasm that was once here is no longer evident. Up until we got off the ship, full interest. Since then the game feels bland. Good luck to you all.
