Angis Ironheart Gear

Post by Angis Ironheart »

Gear
  • The Breaking Shield
    • This dwarven made shield is enchanted to allow a champion to more easily break an enemy line. The enchantments on this shield cause those who see it in use to be terrified at the prospect of being the next to fall under its holder’s ire.
    • Mechanics: This is a large shield. If the bearer pushes a target with a shield bash, or resists a blow from an enemy, he may use his next action to activate Fear. The Fear spell is trapped such that is has no range, and it does not affect allies.
    • Large Shield (+2 Parry, +2 Armor vs Ranged shots that hit)
    • Fear (activated with Intimidation or Spirit roll after resisting a blow or shield bashing)
      • Fear
        • Essence: 2
        • Range: Self only
        • This power causes the target overwhelming dread and horror. The area of effect is LBT. Every creature beneath the template must make a Fear check, at –2 if the caster got a raise. Wild Cards who fail roll on the Fear Table. Extras are Panicked instead.
        • The shield only inspires fear in enemies. As such, the holder and his allies are immune to the effect.
    • 4 Essence
  • Talisman of the Ascended
    • These unassuming talismans look like pieces of ancient currency made into jewelry. The trick to them is that embedded in the core of these ancient bronze coins are a chip of stone. This stone chip is from the mythical Tablet of the Ascended. Anyone who comes into contact with one of these talismans is likely destined to become a great leader.
    • Powers
      • Godly Health: Even with the merest fraction of power from the Tablets of the Ascended the talisman enhances the health of its wearer. Gain +1 to Toughness and the Battle Hardened edge. If the hero has this edge, instead increase it's bonus by 1.
      • Magical Resistance: The Talisman protects its wearer from harmful magical effects. The wearer acts as if he had 1 points of Armor when hit by damage-causing arcane powers, and adds +1 to his Trait rolls when resisting opposed powers. Even friendly arcane powers must subtract this modifier to affect the resistant hero. This stacks with Arcane Resistance and Improved Arcane Resistance.
  • Partial Plate and Chain Armor (Armor +4, Coverage -2)
  • Dwarven Axe (Str+d8, AP 1)(Magic Rune: +1 Fighting)
  • White Silver Battle Axe (Str+d8)
  • 2 Throwing Axes (Str+d6, 3/6/12)
  • Dagger (Str+d4, 3/6/12)
  • Dwarven Crossbow (2d6; 20/40/80, AP 2, 3 shots before reload, 1 action reload)
    • Quiver (19 bolts)
  • Rope 10”
  • Pink, perfumed silk lady’s handkerchief and ribbon around a lock of red-gold hair
  • Ranger Kit
    • 2 sets Ranger clothing (1 worn, 1 extra)(+1 Survival, +1 Stealth, non-urban,+1/-1 Charisma for those with opinions about rangers)
    • 1 week travel rations
    • Waterskin
    • Backpack
    • Bedroll
    • Flint and steel
    • Fishing line and hook
    • Game trapping gear
  • Tent (+1 Shelter, 2 people)

Re: Angis Ironheart (Character Template)

Post by Angis Ironheart »

Background:

Angis is the younger son of a wealthy family of bankers and merchants in the Clanhomes. His mismatched eyes, small stature, and unruly hair provided much amusement to his older brother and friends, and drove Angis to spend more time away from the family and training at the thing he was good at, arms.

When the family made an advantageous marriage match for his older brother with a prominent dwarf clan in the Wildlands, Angis was sent to escort the bride's caravan to the Clanhomes. The girl was young, barely marriageable age, but beautiful, and Angis found her flighty and annoying. She found his taciturn nature and homely looks off-putting. They did not get along, and it looked to be a long trip. But Angis would do his duty by his brother and his clan and deliver the bride safely.

But then the caravan was attacked by Maelstrom marauders. The battle was fierce, and the bloodshed terrible. In the end, Angis was the last standing, protecting the frightened would-be bride, armor and axe covered in blood.

Whether it was adrenaline or the sight of her savior's bravery in defending her, something snapped between the pair. A torrid, passionate affair lasting the weeks it took to reach civilization flared between them. She begged him to run off with her. But once back safely in the Clanhomes, Angis quickly left his family's home, unwilling to watch his brother's infatuation with his fiancée.

Angis dutifully returned to fulfill his function as younger brother in witnessing his brother's marriage to the only woman that had ever moved him. She became with child a bit too quickly and confided in Angis that the child was his. He dutifully told her to keep quiet and return to her husband.

Angis immediately went into self-exile. He went to the Wildlands and plied a trade as a mercenary, ranger, and caravan guard.

***

“Ye shuildnae be ‘ere, Vesia. ‘Tis no’ proper, no’ at this hour.”

“I’m wi’ child, Angis.”

“Guid,” he’d replied. “A wee early, b’fore yer weddin’, but me brudder will be ‘appy t’ ‘ave an heir.”

Vesia worried her lip. “I -- Yeh know yer brudder, Angis. ‘e’s a traditionalist.”

“Aye, like all guid dwarves,” Angis said proudly.

Vesia shifted uncomfortably. “Tha’ means we’ve...no’ been t’gether yet.”

Angis grew silent, the full import of his future sister-in-law’s words hitting him hard. He stepped back, finding it hard to breathe.

“Angis…?” Vesia’s beautiful green eyes glittered with unshed tears.

Angis scratched at the scar that ran down his face, over his green eye. He wasn’t an attractive dwarf by anyone’s measure, with craggy features and eyes of two different colors. He had gotten the scar when he had retrieved Vesia from her home in the Wildlands to marry his brother and secure an important alliance with her family. Maelstrom marauders had ambushed them, and he had stood over Vesia, swinging his axe, hacking away at the raiders, covered in blood, until only he was left standing.

“Ye’re sayin’--”

“‘Tis yers, Angis. I’ve been wi’ nae other.”

Angis shook his head, almost violently. “Nae,” he told her. “Tha’ is no’ possible. I’ve done me brudder dishonor enough.”

Vesia scowled at him scornfully, crossing her arms under her ample dwarven bosom. “Och, an’ wot d’ye expect me t’ dae aboot it?” she asked, that arrogant, fiery childishness of hers rearing its head. She was, after all, nearly five winters younger than him, barely of marrying age. Her bratty, spoiled attitude and his gruff, no-nonsense outlook had led to an instant dislike between the pair on first meeting, and made much of the trip back to the Clanhomes a nightmare with her constant needling, teasing, prodding, and general annoyance.

Until the Maelstrom had ignited a fiery passion out of the shared danger of nearly losing their lives.

“I love ye, Angis. I love yer ugly face an’ yer brave soul. I owe ye me life, I’ve given ye me body, an’ me soul.”

Angis backed away further, shaking his head almost violently. He gave his beard a rough tug of anguish. “Nae!” he snapped at Vesia. “It cannae be! Ye’re me brudder’s betrothed! Rilgh loves ye wi’ all ‘is ‘eart! Yer dowry will put our family back on its feet!”

“But I dunnae love ‘im!” Vesia sobbed. “An’ I dunnae care aboot me dowry! I love ye, Angis!”

Angis grabbed the lapels of Vesia’s nightrobe and shook the younger dwarf almost violently. “Dunnae ye unnerstan’, woman?” he demanded. “Love doesnae matter! We’re dwarves, by Dranak’s beard! Duty ‘tis all tha’ matters! Daein’ right by our clan an’ kin! Wot we want doesnae matter! It cannae be!” He gave her a push that flung her against the door with a thud.

Vesia wiped at tears, angry tears now.

Angis turned his back on Vesia, fighting back his own tears, his shoulders shaking with emotion. “I’ll be leavin’ on the morrow,” he said quietly.

“Wot?” Vesia asked, blinking against her tears.

“I cannae stay ‘ere. ‘Twuild no’ be fair t’ ye or me brudder.”

“But...wot aboot the weddin’?” Vesia sniffed.

“I’ll stand at me brudder’s side,” Angis said. “‘Tis me duty. But then I am gone. ‘Tis f’r the best.”

“An’ the baby?”

“‘Tis me brudder’s.”

“Ye’re a ‘eartless bastard,” Vesia sniffed, picking up the dagger from the table beside the bed.

“Nae,” Angis said. “‘Tis the only way ye will learn t’ love Rilgh as much as ‘e loves ye.” He turned around and paused, noting the dagger in her hand.

Vesia stalked closer to him, fire glinting in her eyes. He didn’t back away. She grabbed him by the beard and pulled him closer, kissing him with all the passion of their torrid, months-long affair on the road home to the Clanholds. Angis groaned, his old, familiar desires welling up within him. He awaited the plunge of the dagger into his heart. It would be welcome compared to what would be the agony of existence without this fiery young dwarf.

Instead Vesia cut off the end of Angis’ beard as she stepped back. She pulled a ribbon from her night robe and wrapped it around the lock of hair, tucking it safely away in her bosom. Then she reached up and cut off one of her red-gold tresses, tied together with a silk ribbon. She pulled a pink silk handkerchief from her bosom as well and wrapped the lock of hair in it, handing it to Angis. It still smelled strongly of her perfume.

“Let it no’ be said I am no’ a guid dwarf,” Vesia said archly, hiding her pain behind a facade of imperiousness. “Know tha’ for wot ye did tha’ day, savin’ me from those raiders, standin’ o’er me an’ drippin’ wi’ blood, I will always love ye, Angis Ironheart.”

Angis just stared at the handkerchief in his hand, unable to look at her.

Vesia spun around and strode out of his rooms, slamming the door behind her.

“An’ I will always love ye, Vesia Aughar,” Angis sobbed, sitting on his bed and burying his face in his hand, the tears coming freely now.

***

“Angis! Angis Ironheart, get in here!”

Angis rubbed the bridge of his nose with his fingers, trying to push back the piercing headache this female’s voice stabbed into his brain every time she spoke. If she wasn’t his brother’s fiancee, he might have just throttled her.

Angis nudged his pony over to the carriage and leaned toward the window as the curtain was pushed aside. Vesia was a beauty, by any definition. Red-gold hair framed emerald eyes set in an alabaster face, a cute, pert nose speckled with a light smattering of freckles. She was full bodied like a good dwarven woman should be, but not overweight. A true vision for any dwarf.

Until she spoke. Vesia was an only child of a wealthy family, and used to getting her own way. And while Angis was also from such a family, he was the younger son, and ugly, to boot, with eyes of two different colors, a craggy face, and a large scar over one eye.

“Are we there yet?” Vesia demanded petulantly.

Angis sighed. “Nae, me sister,” he replied. Since the bridal contract was signed, they were essentially family. All that was required were the formalities now, a wedding and an heir. “We’re ‘alfway through Malakar. Long way t’ gae yet.”

Vesia sighed. “I’m bored.”

Angis rolled his eyes. Vesia was young, barely a full woman. “I’m sorry, me sister. But I need t’ keep alert. Malakar ain’t a safe place t’ travel.” Not for the first time, Angis was cursing himself for not taking a boat. But he hated being on the water. He would fight off a Maelstrom army before he braved a storm at sea. And it was more expensive, with all the girl’s luggage. But he should have considered how important it was to get Vesia home safely. Still, if they road hard, Malakar wasn’t a long journey to cross.

Just then a crossbow quarrel sprouted from the throat of the driver up on top of the carriage. The dwarf gurgled and fell into the dust of the road. Angis sat up straight in his saddle, looking around to see the hilltop crested with armed men. Maelstrom banners fluttered in the breeze.

“Shadow and Flame!” Angis cursed. “Fly!” he yelled to the rest of the caravan. He leapt onto the carriage to take the driver’s place, but just then a spell hit him, sending him tumbling, dazed, to the dirt.

Angis roused himself. How long had he been out? The caravan was surrounded by laughing men, the dwarves all dead around him. The Maelstrom were looting now. A heavily armed captain with a sword dragged Vesia out of the coach by her hair.

“Such a pretty thing, for a dwarf,” the captain sneered, looking up at a tall, regal man on a warhorse. He wore black robes with arcane sigils stitched in silver. He was handsome and arrogant, with black hair going silver at the temples, though he was still on the younger side, for a human. “Don’t you think, Malik?”

“I think I will leave you to your petty amusements,” Malik said. “Make camp here for the night. We cross the border tomorrow.” Malik turned his horse, and the captain and his men laughed and dragged Vesia to the ground.

Angis rolled to his feet with a roar, grabbing up his axe. His first swing decapitated the Maelstrom captain. The follow through embedded deep into another soldier. By the time Malik on his horse spun around to see the commotion, Angis was the only one alive standing over Vesia.

“You should be dead, dwarf!” Malik said in surprise.

Angis grinned ferally, gripping his axe. “Takes a lot more’n yer wee spells t’ keep me doon, mage!” he said, spitting into the dirt.

Malik harrumphed. “Kill him,” he ordered the rest of the three score troops.

Angis gave a roar of defiance and set his shield, standing protectively with Vesia gripping his leg in fear, her dress torn, bosom heaving.

Angis was lost in a red haze. He swung axe and blocked with shield as man after man charged at them. He ignored wounds, moving and guarding the young dwarf he was charged to protect and deliver to his brother.

When the slaughter ended, Angis stood in a ring of bodies. He dripped blood, and the blood dribbled onto Vesia. His breath heaved in and out as he glared through the red mask of carnage at the mage.

Malik sent another spell. Angis stepped forward, intercepting it on his shield to protect Vesia, staggering, but not downed.

“What are you?” Malik said in startlement.

“Your death, human,” Angis growled, staggering forward toward him.

Malik’s horse danced a bit, and then the man tossed off another spell and yanked the reins, spurring his horse at a fast gallop away from the slaughter.

Angis staggered and fell to his knees, using his axe for support to keep from face planting into the bloody dirt.

“Angis!” Vesia rushed to him, putting her arms around him. Her dress was in tatters, her rich, satin delicates exposed and ruined, face bloody from second hand gore as she gripped his beard and stared into Angis’ mismatched eyes.

“You saved me!”

“Aye. ‘Tis me duty,” Angis said.

And then the spoiled, rich, beautiful child was kissing him. Angis felt strength returning as his powerful arms dropped axe and shield to encircle her waist, pull her hard against his armor, fumbling fingers tearing away the last of her tattered dress as she tugged at the fastenings of his armor, falling back into the bloody dirt of the road to express their ardor for life, and each other.

Hindrances: Heroic (M), Ugly (m), Loyal (m)
Edges: Heart of Stone, Robust

Also has throwing axes
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!
