Downtown Denver Downtime

Post by stormwell »

Sutter has halted the herd half a day's ride from Denver and has spent a few days in town getting a feel for the local cattle market. You and the other hands have been given leave to whoop it up a little in town whilst Sutter plans his move and sets up potential deals. Compared from the long journey up from the scrublands of Texas, it has been an easy few days.

Note to Players

Alright, listen up folks!

Now's a chance to gain an EP and a bennie to boot!

You have a week to write an Interlude about what your character gets up to during this stopover, whether they stay round the herd or head into town to marvel at the sights of Denver. Now is also a good time to state whether you're buying anything with your hard won cash and whether there is any subplots you wish to develop.

Happy writin'!

Denver
Night
Round 0
Conditions:

Hope was delighted to be back in civilization. The first thing she did was grab Abby and get a nice hotel room where they could luxuriate in a bath and sleep in a real bed. Then she took the girl shopping, buying a fancy dress, some silk stockings, and town shoes. After a good meal in the hotel restaurant that wasn’t beans and salt pork, Hope and Abby, all dolled up and beautiful, hit the town. They hit a dance hall, and Hope swore she danced her feet off with every man that asked, and that wasn’t an insignificant number. She had a bit too much to drink, as well, but hell, it had been quite a payday.

Denver, the gateway to the west. Real civilization. Saloons, gambling, brothels and ... cops.

Sergio rides into town and eyes all the fun to be had. As much as he looks forward to enjoying it all his first stop is at the Denver Police Department.

Hitching his horse out front he pulls a weathered folded paper out of a saddle bag and unfolds it before heading inside the police station.

Holding the paper out in front of him, almost as if it were a shield, he walks in slowly. Left arm relaxed down by his left side iron.

The burly desk sergeant eyes Sergio from under his cap and then flickers his eyes to the wall of wanted posters.

Suddenly the old copper lifts a shotgun up from under the desk and says: “That’s far enough Black Adder!“

Another copper in the room walks closer to Sergio and with his gun drawn gets just close enough to read the paper Sergio is holding out.

For his part the gunman Sergio tries to keep a smile on his face and breath normally.

“Well I’ll be a pigs uncle Sergeant Bellows, it looks like Adder here has a letter from Federal Judge Simmons exonerating him. The reward on the Black Adder is lifted.”

The older desk sergeant chuckles and says: “May hap but I reckon he didn’t know about the no loaded weapons be’n allowed in the station, less ya a man of the law, which we all know this killer ain’t. I figure we’ll abide by Judge Simmons order, that judge ain’t a fellow to anger, but just to make sure ol’Adder here understands we are in charge here in Denver we’ll just toss him into a cell for 48 hours.”

Stripped and tossed naked in a cold cell, two days later, unfed and allowed no water, the coppers rolled Sergio out the front door laughing.

Patting himself down as he lay at the feet of his horse Sergio noticed that at least they had watered and fed his horse. He also noticed the majority of his cash was missing from his pockets.

Dressing in the morning light out front of the police station he grumbled and decided it could have gone worse. Least now the coppers, hopefully, wouldn’t be raising guns at the sight of him in town.

The rest of the free time in Denver Sergio played cards in an effort to earn some cash as he blew through it pretty fast in girls and whiskey.

By the end of the free time he’d had his fill of civilization and looked forward to heading out. A few bottles of whiskey packed away in his saddle bags he bid a sweat young thing farewell, lite a cigar and didn’t look back as he rode away.

Denver proved to be an up and coming city, boasting as it did substantial number of brick buildings and an almost civilised air about it in contrast to the rough and tumble little towns they'd encountered thus far. To Archibald, Denver seemed like a smaller version of the East Coast cities he'd visited and reminded him of similar cities in Africa. He felt very much like the wasteland wanderer who'd stumbled upon the oasis that was modern civilisation with all it's amenities.

He had a sinking feeling, though, about letting Hope cart Abigail off to the city together. Archibald felt that he should've perhaps spoken up, stated his intent to spend some time in the girl's company viewing the sights that Denver had to offer. Alas, Hope had said to meet them up later and thus gave Archibald the chance to tend to some business. First he found a tailor's to have some clothes mended and then found the post office to send a telegram and a parcel, though having to spend some coin to have it shipped North across the Canadian border. Next on his list was a barbershop to get a clean shave before seeking out a hotel room for the night and freshening himself up after collecting his now repaired clothes.

Later, dressed in his mended and cleaned-up military uniform, Archibald arrived at the dance hall where Hope had told him to meet her and Abby. As he glanced round he received a number of looks ranging from bemused puzzlement and some admiration from the women which he paid little heed. At last he found the duo and approached them, nodding a greeting to Hope.

"Ah Miss Morton, you look...stunning." Archibald smiled at Abby, trying to hide his own blushing and extending an arm. "Would you do me the honour of this dance?"

Some time later Archibald went back to his hotel room with Abby on his arm.

The following day the two of them returned together to the herd clearly closer than they'd had been, though neither were willing to say much on what had transpired.

John heads into Denver and is seemingly on some sort of tour of the drinking establishments, though keeping away from anybody from the drive. Eventually, he ends up at the back of a bar and as he leans over the bar, another hand places a shot of whiskey in front of him. John lifts the brim of his hat to see a familiar face

"Pettinger."

"Surprised to see you here Baxter, though you followed the instructions I gave you to get our attention."

"On a Drive. We ran into some trouble along the way that might be of interest. If you have a file on a Shaman called Black Dog, he's working for Bayou Vermillion. Somebody tried to steal something from one of your testing labs and Black River were attempting to take control of an area just south of here."

John downs his whiskey and the man signals for another to be poured for each of them

"Your government thanks you for your service." Pettinger drops a book on the bar and John peeks a look at the cover

"A book of laws?" John gives him a quizzical look.

"Gift from the US Marshall service. Never know when your government might have need of your service."

Wait..., what are you on about?" John looks at the book and then back at Pettinger, but he was already heading out the door.

Seriously?

For the rest of the layover, John can be found reading the book.
