Mind Melter Iconic Edge: Subtle Power

Post by Freemage »

Subtle Power
Requirements: Novice, Mind Melter
As an action, you can render the next Power you invoke completely invisible until it hits its target; similarly, you yourself do not show any outward sign of using a Power. So, for instance, you can loose a Fire/Combustion Bolt at someone, doing damage and possibly igniting them, but no one can tell where the bolt came from. This can be done as a Multi-Action with the Power, at the normal penalty.
If someone spends their action actively watching for someone to use a Subtle Power, they can roll Notice at -4 to spot the tell-tale brow-furrow or flick of gaze that might come with it.
Of course, active Detect Arcana will still perceive the Power's invocation.

Subtle Mastery
Requirements: Seasoned, Mind Melter, Psionics d10
You may now use Subtle Power as a Free Action any time you invoke a Power, and the Notice roll to perceive the use of the Power is now at -6. If you also have Disciplined Mind, you may invoke Conceal Arcana or Exalted Conceal Arcana as part of invoking a Power, rolling two Psionics dice (one for Conceal, one for the Power being hidden; if you use Exalted Conceal, you must still spend the extra ISP) and one Wild Die.

Personally I think this is more suited to a set of psionic trappings for powers. I believe someone mentioned that as an idea. I was going to work on that as a project too. Having said that I would not turn down any suggestion to make Mind Melters better.

The thing is, this would be in addition to the Trapping the Power has. Currently, the rule is one Trapping/Power, and changing that gets tricky in all sorts of ways. So if this is the Trapping, then when you create Bolt, you have to either pick Subtle Bolt or Fire Bolt. This lets you pick Fire Bolt, then decide on the fly whether or not it's obvious that you're the one chucking it around.

i for one like it.

Why is Corsario voting Abstain on all these?
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!
