02 - What your friends have been doing...

Post by Ndreare »

As always Castruccio’s welcome is more formal than you usually prefer. But this time he appears to be completely focused on the team in the room. No signs he is multitasking at all. “Glad you were able to enjoy your rewards from before.” Handing out a video tab Castruccio shows you a video of a team of eclectic mercenaries breaking into a very high security vault and retrieving several items.

The videos are piecemeal and of grainy quality as if recovered from a wiped drive. The area shown is obviously in the lower levels of Center from the dilapidated look of things. A team of four guards are seen standing outside of one such building, when their shift change came they obviously had taken a more relaxed approach. They watch as an attractive well to do young woman comes in paying more attention to her and their coffee than to the doors they should be protecting.

As the attendant leads the woman in back and opens the vault there is a strange hazing effect, but as the camera is combined from another angle you can see a team of four people standing behind an illusionary wall. The moment the vault door is opened their is a flicker as the team teleports in.

As they are chatting with their replacements and refilling coffees a small team of five humanoids move in with incredible speed. Through a series of teleports and improvised techno-wizardry miracles the team is able to start looting the vault. Then the video pauses about two thirds of the way through. Watching your old team mates in action is impressive. The fact that Castruccio apparently does not know of your former affiliation could make this mission a lot easier.

Castruccio points out a sleek looking black box retrieved by one of the mercenaries. “What you see there is a box we have been interested in for some time. When out intelligence network became aware that it has gone back to the market we became very interested again.

“The team you see there is a new crew we are not very familiar with yet. However they are apparently competent. What I want is that box, and what is in it, I do not care how you get it, bribe them, steel it, or work something out in trade. But I will pay you for the box and its contents.” As the video resumes you can see the techono-wizard opens the box his face shows a flash of rage before coming back into control.

“I am willing to pay 1,500,000 credits for that box. If you can get it to me without there team or anyone else being alerted to the fact it was taken I will quintuple that price. Looking he makes it clear for the team to understand. “Discretion is so important to me on this one, that I would be willing to give a favor in addition to the pay if you can pull this off.”

It is only after having let you watch the video that he tells you the tough part. Castruccio does not know where the crew is now. The last time he saw them they were hired my a Mekakurian for a mission Castruccio has not been able to discern. He currently does not know where they are, but that is why he is hiring you.
Notes
You have a chance to ask some questions.

You mission will be heavily espionage here. You need to find out where your old team mates went and heck, who knows maybe even split the take with them. How hard could it be with your skill set?

2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Ramson considers all of this. "What else can you tell us about the box? I'm assuming you don't want to tell us what's inside, or you would've already, but what's it made out of, how heavy is it, does it have any markings we can't see on this video? I'm thinking if we make a counterfeit and pull off a swap, they won't be able to know when it happened, so might think they got the bogus one when they raided the vault."

"The box is an Class XI bio-hazard containment box. It should be about 4 kilograms. Inside are some very important semi-biotech samples. I know curiosity always makes employees want to look. But in this case, I do not mind as long as I get the samples." Castruccio nods, "Exactly, getting it from them without them knowing would be ideal. I will get you the most detailed technical data on the box we can calculate before you leave the building."

Subterfuge is not Sa'Maku's strong suit. He preferred simple and forthright communications. However, the chance to pull one over on their old mates makes him chuckle. He covers up up his mirth quickly, "Four kilograms is not problem. Power Dump has bowel movements heavier than that."

Tracking down the Sovereign would not be easy but no doubt Death Otter could get a lead on them. For such a big bounty it may even be worthwhile to just do a deal with them, but Ransome would figure that out. For his part the big Seljuk just keeps grinning. Until he year's the contents.

Looking at Sa'Maku's gear and then over to his bio-borg companion Castruccio’s smile shows more than a little hint of irony. "Nothing in there is living. They are samples from beings who have passed some time ago and no longer need them. Like blood scrapped from the ground after a battle."

Pwer Dump licks his lips at the mention of space wasps, and his chest amalgate drips some sweet smelling silivia on the floor. ” This job sounds pretty easy. What are you going to do with the box? I require assurances that either it will be put to honorable pursuits or be used to cause much bloodshed. Anything in between would be anithetical to my own being and I could not in good consience take this job.” PD adjusts his black tittysprikles lettered T as it was chafing his nipples. His eyes do not display mirth and if anything those souless orbs ephamasized his serious ultimatium. Currently his arsonel of weaponry is sheathed but itching to be drawn and used to turn people into quaters. With only one farie dead his heart yearned for more honorable people to die. As ever the book Dragonheart that details the old code hangs on off a chain in easy reach for a good heart warming quote.

Perhaps oblivious or maybe all for honor and murder hoboing Power Dump nods his head the tubes that carry black ichor following suit. ” Very well I accept this worthy job, and the box shall be yours.”

He turns to leave activating his comms up to the ship, ” Arsonel we have some old friends to track down.”

Re: 02 - What your friends have been doing...

Sa'Maku is less enthusiastic than Power Dump about the mission, there are more than a few ambiguities about their employer and his intentions. But then again, that was true of the CCW government when he was a marine too. In cases like this the best one can do is walk with honor.

Standing tall he joins the others in giving ascent then joins Power Dump in assisting Arsenal. When he gets a minute he shows the techno-smithy his new weapon, "I have heard that beings may be enslaved in this weapon. Can you determine if it is true?"

The techno-smithy called lady Arsonel after a moment disengages from Power Dump to see what her friend @@Sa’Maku needed. After a moment of looking at the slaver gun she could sense it vibrations and whispers of personality.

While, Power Dump was mostly regaling others with snopets from his Dragon Heart book or going on about the three best ways to kill a fairy, Arsonal liked the social aspect’s of the crew. She had found each of the radar signature’s of the member’s of the team intriging and like @Sa’Maku’s case tantalizing.

Wow, that is some fun tech to be sure... After a moment of listening to the weapon talk to her she paused handing it back to @Sa’Maku. She shakes her head no, ” No... The gun says there is not a life form currently trapped in it. I suspect the fairy used in its construction has long since been dead. Bio-wizard weaponry while useful is despicable.”

The report from the techno-smithy is not ideal. However, it is better than carrying around a weapon with an enslaved sentient inside.

"Thank you for your assistance Lady Arsenal. I will honor the sacrifice of this being. No longer will this weapon be used for slavery but for bringing the wanted to justice."

If I perish may my remains be put to noble pursuits.
