02.2 - Enacting the Plan

Post by Ndreare »

This thread will be for posting in character when you need to take micro steps for your plan and need me to respond with rolls and information.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Location: Frank’s Fabricator Facsimiles: From industrial to the kind you need for your next job. No questions asked.

At the edge of the industrial district in an old abandoned space station next to a great chasm a man finds himself alone with only his arsenal of weapons on his backside. One bioborg, one ex assassin, one honor bound man on a mission stares darkly into the nearby void. His head swivels to shop, a gray building with two windows and a orange doorway. It’s time to get the fabricator.

But could it ever be that easy for the souless bio borg named Power Dump. His hankering for space wasp boarderlined on legendary. His penchant for talking dragon’s with a code was oft rumored to be insatiable. Both however were dwarfed by his need to paint the streets red. Ever his adversary Twinkle Toms and the 7th street Frolicking Fairies knew Power Dump was headed this way and this time they were out for murder. Little did Power Dump know that the fairy he killed with his god gun earlier in the week ( during the capture of A) was Twinkle Tom’s nephew Sparkling Sam. Normally the faries would play jokes and make Power Dump look look like a fool. This time, if the Frolicking Fairies could kill the ex D team assassin it would be gravy.

Nightly News Extravaganza with Golden Rod and Silvia Sanders. Featuring Special Corrispondant Humperdink Happityback
DooDooDoo Daaaa! Ting ting badda Bing. The intro chime ends and the camera focuses in on a golden humanoid droid with a nose about 1 foot long and a rather portly looking red headed woman with a black mole that has a tiny mouth on her cheek. The droid has a loud borsterous voice that sounds like a wind chime and a gong had a baby. It says, ” Thank you for tuning into to Channel 301234 your news on Center all the time ever time. I am your host Golden Rod and my lovly co host as always here with me Sillvia Sanders!”

The portly woman fixes her dress which barely covers your tripped out bosom. She speaks almost as loud but is more on the condesending side of life. ” Thanks G rod. Tonight we have a flurry of activity on Center from a strike gone wrong at the Slaver’s R Us loading dock, to little Zibba the Kreeghor with a heart of gold. But first lets turn our attention to the horrors that have befallen Frank’s Fabricator Facimilies. We turn to our man on the ground Humperdink Happtiyback in front of FFFs! Parents we’ll give you a moment to shield your kids eyes.”

A human looking male with slick brown hair, yellow eyes and jeering pair of lips being hidden behind a gass mask appears on the screen. Behind him is a scene of utter carnage. The once grey shop was now splotched red with bits of it scorched and in flames. Dragon scales litter the ground, and a thick rolling yellow fog is sweeping through the air unable to be purified by center’s many air filters. He quips lightly, ” Thanks Sillvia, yes indeed this is not a sight for children.” The camera pans to the right looking at the ground taking in countless aliens and D-bees rolling mercilessly on the ground coughing up blood, mucus, and vomit.

The golden droid’s voice cuts in not exaclty sympathetic to the plight of the injured, ”Wow! This is amazing Humperdink. What happened?”

The camera pans away from the grisley back to Humperdik swooshing back his slick hair. With a quick verbal reparte he jabs, ” A fiar question G. From what I can gather is all started with the purchase of a small portable fabricator gone terribly wrong.” He coughs briefly, a cleaver stall tactic to ensure his audience is enraptured. ” We have all heard the rumors of a bio-borg walking the space lanes of center. You know the one I speak of. Eyes black and souless. A countance too horrible to look on unless you hate life with utter abandon.” The camera zooms in on just his face, ” Yes. You know whom I speak of... Power Dump.”

Silvia Sander blumbers in a high shrill yell, ” Not that bastard. He ate my baby!”

Humperdink nodded slowly his arm now reaching around the shoulder of a grackltooth giving both the audience the sight of a grackle crying and just how big Humperdink was. ” Yes Silvia, the one and the same I am afraid... This is my new friend Bucky Twobucks... He saw everything that can’t be unseen.”

The grackletooth still crying sobs into the hovering microphone, ” Oh... I wish a stage six promethean had smote me man... It was horrible man. This dude looking like a meat sack held together with corrigated tubing and razor wire. He strolled in to Franks wanting to pick up something ordered over the wave... Oh man... Oh man... That when it went south. A few baby dragons bright red came into the shop and started talking about this new code they were using. Set the bio-borg off something fierce, pulled a god damn book on them he did.”

Humperdink looks agast his face draining, ” Not a book... You can’t he wouldn’t...”

The grackle doing a bit better but his eyes still moist and lips trembling nods his head, ” Yeah man you know baby dragons don’t go in on that reading thing. Heck everyone knows... But oh man I wish I could see his face... Ack... Yeah the bio borg just goes off about the only code. The oldest. The baby dsragons laugh and then shit justs hits the fan. Swords of all kinds fire! They took to the street where the annual space wasp fetival was taking place right outside of Franks... Just all kinds of space wasp. Friend, jullien, sauted, butter-flied and so on... Hover trucks of space wasp were here... He...” The Grackletooth’s eyes grew wide as he shuttered, ” He Ate them all...”

Golden Rod cuts in with mechanized bravado, ” He hate them all? The Horror!!!”

Humperdink waves some rolling yellow fog away and asks the question ever viewer all two wants to know, ” What happened next?

The grackletooth sobs into the auto mic hovering nearby. Its water proofing features held strong. ” There were some elves and other fae folk. Lepercauns, Kinder and whatnot laughing their asses off pointing at huh I guess his name is Power Dump huh... That’s went he went ape shit and a fire melee frenzy erupted in the middle of the space wasp festival... I don’t know man... But its like their laser fire ingnited his horrific belch and suddenly its like Rigellus IV all over man. This yellow fog erupted out of the sccufle... Just look at all the people man! Paralized! Vomitting... Ugggghhh... Who would do this... Who!”

Humperdink Happityback releases the grackle and the camera focuses in on him. With as much gravitas he can muster he quips, ” We know who. Power Dump, the scourge of sector 7. Number 2 on Center’s most vile list. Where is he now? This is Humperdink Happityback from channel 301234. Keep your children safe tonight.”
Power Dump comes back with a frown on his face wondering if he would ever be allowed back on center. The fabricator seems to be in his hand. Your fabricator Miss Otter...”

Nimbus is reading something on a tablet when the breaking news alert interrupts. He types in a command and the story appears on the groups communal screen. Without breaking his glance from the tablet, he speaks. "Probably shouldn't have let him off by himself."

When Power Dump arrives Nimbus looks to him, a smirk on his face. "Seriously? You killed a bunch of faeries? Were you deliberately going for the lamest foe possible? Who's next, Danny's dozen?"

"Thanks, big P," Otter said, snatching the instrument from him. To Nimbus she just scoffed and went to find a quiet place to work.

A few seconds later, malware in computers scattered around Phase World came to life after receiving a coded command via various networks, wired and wireless. Each one spewed search spiders like grotesque alien pods discharging face-hugging spawn...tiny bits of specialized code that were far more invasive than the relatively benign version employed by reputable search engines. These covered all that ground and then some; prying into personal messages, records of private communications...anything they could wiggle their way into. Their ability to defeat any kind of real security was minimal; they were stupid things. But in their legions they took advantage of that fact that there was always someone who didn't feel a need to password protect, or secure their system, and from that breach many others could cascade outward.

They were looking for The Sovereign and her crew...where were they, and what were they doing?

Each spider found what it could and trawled it back to Death Otter's feed. Her job was less to search for information and more to quickly analyze what was brought back...throwing out the noise and keeping the precious, precious signal. Keeping up with that data load was one of the reasons she'd gotten herself 'upgraded.'

Hacking: 22
[dice:11sduge7]50604:0[/dice:11sduge7] or [dice:11sduge7]50604:1[/dice:11sduge7]
Ace [dice:11sduge7]50604:2[/dice:11sduge7] Ace [dice:11sduge7]50604:3[/dice:11sduge7]

And lo they returned, the little spiders. Not as many as had been released, of course. Many perished at the hands of anti-malware software. Others languished in systems that became isolated before they were done. A few were eviscerated by data loss in transmission. Enough made it back though...more than enough.

Death Otter flicked through file after file, each summarizing the contents of a larger and more robust piece of data. Rapidly, methodically, she flagged each for deletion or retention. Then came the second run, where she evaluated the contents she'd retained.

Finally she was left with the results of the trawl and got back to her feet to meet the others and let them in on the dirt.

In the conference room of the Remorseless, Otter began with grainy, reconstituted footage from several security cameras stitched together.

"This is the Sovereign," the hacker said. She blew a bubble in her chewing gum, then popped it and sucked the limp pink remains back into her mouth. "Just before it left port. Funny story about this footage, but we'll orbit back to that."

A stream of data appeared in a sidebar on the image, scrolling rapidly. "This is the flight plan she filed with Center port authority. Unfortunately, they only logged their jump point, BUUUUUT because I'm awesome..." the footage being holographically projected in the air over the table flickered and changed to a rotating depiction of a spiral-armed galaxy. "On their way out to FTL jumping distance, they sent out several signals. Arranging lodgings, requests for shopping lists...all aimed at..."

The image wavered and shifted again, now showing a radiant blue planet flecked with white tufts of clouds and curls of green far below.

"Paradise. Thundercloud galaxy. It's basically a giant resort operated by the resident species called..."
Here Death Otter started breaking into giggles. "...Pleasurers. Not even joking. That's actually the name they chose to be translated as. ANYWAY!"

"What a fucking coincidence that their old buddies are on that planet too, eh? We should totally catch up on old times and get drunk and rent a few PLEASURERS or something! Oh shit, almost forgot the other thing."

Death Otter flicked back to the footage of the ship in the port on Center. "So if there were any astute among you, you'd have noticed that this is not normal berth security camera footage. Quality is low, there's missing metadata crawl, and the angle is all wrong. Our old buddies were under surveillance while they docked here. Three hand-placed microcameras watching the ship from angles they could specifically view spots that the security cameras wouldn't be able to see."

She clicked the image off.

"The frequencies they were working on are registered to Center port authority, and the encryption was Center security. There was also a security checkpoint close by with orders to observe the corridors outside the berth for unusual activity. No specifics in the orders, and no actions other than observe. Maybe most importantly, the orders didn't name THEM, which is IMPORTANT because it implies that the SOURCE of the orders didn't want anyone to KNOW. Not even the ones carrying the orders OUT."

"So someone else is interested in them. And because they didn't do TOO good a job covering their tracks, it's ENTIRELY possible that they ALSO know where the Sovereign went. So be ready for a little of the old 'competition,' my glassy-eyed crew!"

As the revelation of their already being gone on a mission comes clear so does the fact that they have two full days lead on you. Most AI's would consider this a 6 day trip in the Remorseless. But it may be possible to get there sooner if you have the skills needed you could push the ship and get the most out of it, or a competent pilot could navigate through some stellar phenomena that would normally be avoided.

Your Options
1) Take normal time and get there in 6 days.
2) Ride like you Honor depends on it. Roll Piloting -4 to push the ship success reduces the time by 1 day, a Raise reduces it by 2 days. Critical failure will incapacitate your ship in space and lead to repairs (using Technical Difficulties table) and encounters!
3) Risk some serious dangers by Navigating outside of the space-lanes. Make an Astrogation roll at -4 and double the time saved from piloting. But the dangers are a normal piloting failure is treated as a critical failure.

PS: You may use appropriate support rolls to provide up to +4 to you the lead position as per Cooperative effort. Each character may only perform one or the other rolls, not both.

Death Otter went from the small common room they used for conferences up to the cockpit at the bow of the Remorseless, running her hand along the bulkheads as she went. Once there she socked herself into one of the rear seats and brought up the NAVCOM display. Immediately a projection of the galaxy they were in appeared, with the current location showed as Center.

She batted at the chart, zooming in, rotating it, and began playing 'connect the dots' with various jump points, looking for places to shave travel time. There WAS a way, though it involved some very dicey calculations...

Studying the astrogation charts with Death Otter Sa'Maku notes her bold routing, "When I fought in the pirate expanse we often had tofly outside the space lane. While the fleet officers handled most of it, my team would have to fly in the landing craft. The margin of safety for avoiding certain phenomena is overstated by about twenty percent. A rugged ship like the Remorseless can cut much closer."

Knowing that time is of the essence Fiona starts to research various smuggler and daredevil routes that may help hasten their arrival. A couple searches, and chats with acquaintances and she finds a doozy. "The Pohl corridor parallels much of our course. a thin twisting band with low stellar density. In some stretches it's possible to reach near intergalactic speeds."

Piloting 13
Rolling Piloting Co-op (Team Leader Edge means highest Piloting Roll leads, and all others assist that roll.):
Piloting [dice:22qqnay4]50712:0[/dice:22qqnay4] ACE [dice:22qqnay4]50712:2[/dice:22qqnay4] ACE [dice:22qqnay4]50712:3[/dice:22qqnay4]
Wild Piloting [dice:22qqnay4]50712:1[/dice:22qqnay4]
Ramson knows he can trust his team to do what they do best. What he does best, on the other hand, is make sure that whoever is doing the best of their best gets to call the shots in the heat of the moment. And today, at least, it would appear that Ramson is best. He grins savage agreement at Sa's dismissal of the 20% margin that 'standard' ships use through the lanes.

"Not only that, but let me show you a little trick." He uses a gravity slingshot maneuver on day 2 just before they re-enter hyperspace--the ship rattles a bit from the sudden acceleration, then stabilizes, gliding through the warp like a stone skipping across the water.

Sorry for all the problems the pervious post caused. No rolls made here
Power Dump just spends most of the trip on the can ejecting space wasps from an orifice while thinking about the last time he was at Paradise.
Last time he was at Paradise
The emergency space pod was cramped for one person but with two it was an uncomfortable nightmare. Power Dump sighs looking at his fellow pod mate resting easy. An Atless by the looks of him, the bored eyes and pleasant face were a dead give away. A crafty fellow by all accounts. Showed me how to catch space wasp, and even fiddled a way to use my excess methane to keep the pods power supply going. Glad I didn’t just kill him. Power Dump looks out the small window down at the pleasure planet below. He holds up his his worn book Dragonheart placing it against the transparet material. He mutters trying to to distrub his sleeping friend, ”A knight knows only virtue...”
