03 Welcome to Paradise

Post by Ndreare »

With a talent for finding information Fiona sets out to get some answers to questions the others may not have thought to ask. Moving through the crowds and calling on old friends worked in the past and did not fail her this time. Well, did not fail her completely...

Shortly before leaving the team went to meet someone on The Scorched Lands. Who they met there is unknown, supposedly some sort of earth elemental escort took them from there and returned them to Center through the same gate.

However, finding out who was following them was much easier. Word on the street was a vicious pale elven woman with a mean streak was following them. Not only that, but she had some sort of techno wizard or something with her that launched nano drones looking like grains of sand. The vicious little things were used to torture a few people to ensure the information was accurate. Just thinking of the group with her is enough many of them people spoken to about it shake in fear. Her name when spoken sends chills up the spines of the speakers ‘Nemesis’
Nemesis
Nemisis.jpg

As the team puts their best foot forward they are able to navigate the more dangerous spaceways often avoided and arrive at the Paradise system only a couple days after leaving. Who would have thought the Remorseless could perform so well? Arsenal of course, coming out of the engine room she glares at Ramson as she delivers her message. “It will take at least half a day to fix her.” Then looking around the rest of the crew as if she was surprised to see them there. “12 standard hours.”

Scanning the system the crew looks to confirm the location of the Sovereign. After all it should be here and if they find it, then this would be the time to begin putting their plan in use. However soon as they begin closing in on the planet the coms are overwhelmed with the hundreds of promises for various pleasures and other opportunities ‘only available in Paradise’. The direct and unconcealed nature of the promises is enough that anyone with a sense of decency would feel shamed.

Instructions
One player (whoever is at the com at the time) needs to roll Knowledge (Electronics) -2 for the overwhelming amounts of data.

Chat if you would like about Fiona’s findings.

I will post again after the coms operator post the Electronics roll.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Power Dump looks at the make shift holo receiver Arsenal has installed in the bathroom within reach of his third arm. Pleasures eh? Ugghhh plop goes the space wasp. My kind of deal. He puts on the receiver descending into the otherworldly activities only a pleasureor knew how to induce. Plop Plop Plop...

No helpful roll made here his hindrance likes this kind of stuff.

Kharis has a headache, and the overwhelming chatter doesn’t help. Space travel is fine in theory, he thinks, grimacing.

”So, we’re here then? Yay, team.”

He looks around. ”Hey, where’d the coffee go?”
FTL Sickness
After days aboard with him, I imagine the team would be used to this, but he gets crazy bad headaches from FTL travel. 1 Fatigue for 24 hours after FTL travel.

Death Otter, having some idea what the comm traffic would be like when they hit Paradise, was sitting up front in time to see the transition back to normal space. Immediately the board went flashing yellow and red as the ship was besieged by signals. She splayed her hands over the controls, interfacing with the system mentally to sift through the incoming garbage and try to pluck out the tidbits that might actually be useful to them.

"Well, that was a little disappointing. Whomever they are working for is very secretive. All I could learn was they were rifted to the Scorched Lands and escorted there and back by some sort of earth elemental." She would be far more disappointed in her contacts had the meeting not taken place somewhere off Center. The inquiries about their competition were slightly more fruitful. "I did learn a little about who else is looking for them. An elven woman. Pale and vicious, who goes by the name of nemesis. Her and at least one other, possibly a techno-wizard, were asking around and none too politely. Torturing would be far more accurate."

"NEMESIS?!" Nimbus is so angry he spits, accidentally getting some on the Bio Borg. He grits his teeth and storms off, rooting around in his cabin until he eventually comes back wearing an elbow length glovewith some wiring attached to it. On top of the forearm is a small flat square, the razor sharp half circle of a buzzsaw sticking out halfway.
"I have just the thing for that..." he mutters the rest, in some odd guttural language.

Through his headache-induced haze, Kharis raises an eyebrow at Nimbus’ response. ”I take it you two know each other? And is that... a buzz saw?”

"A buzzsaw gun? Wow, you really can get anything on Phase World!"

Kharis moves his head a bit too emphatically while he speaks and his vision swims for a moment, the headache growing a little in intensity.

One hand on his temple, he continues, "Well, if we do meet this Nemesis person, I have little doubt we will dispatch her in due course and you can have your honorable revenge."

As Death Otter works the controls she is able to easily filter out the spam filling the air waves. But Filtering the massive numbers of ships in orbit was a bit harder. Luckily the effort pays off as she detects the Sovereign sitting in orbit around the planet with the security system running full bore.

However what really stands out to her, is a faint echo of a Pursuit shuttle that flickers into visibility for a brief moment as it leaves the Sovereign's shuttle bay headed for the planet. The Sovereign appears to be on auto pilot orbiting the planet while the crew is on the planet doing what must be done. More interesting is that the Pursuit is headed down to the planet after them.

Instructions
Your raise allowed you to overcome the stealth system on the Sovereign.

Carry on with the RP and let me know when you are committing to action. Does this new development change your plans at all?

Power Dump wanders out of the bathroom leaving the auto flusher jammed per the norm. It is immediately apperant that something has disturbed the big lumbering soulless splugorth bio wizard creation. His mouth hangs agape as if he forgot it was open and he joins Nimbus at the temporal mages side. ” Mission is on hold. Payback knows no end and a Knight must have his virtue restored.” Power Dumps chest amalgate hisses Nemisis!!!!!!

He kicks the ships piloting controls taxing the beleaguered engines further pointing the ship into a collision course for what he hopes is Nemisis’ ship. ” A knight’s strength upholds the weak!!! You’re going too die Nemisis! Argghhhh!”

Power Dump drops like a sac of potatoes black fluid leaking out of his mouth and ass. From behind the slumbering mound of bioborg Lady Arsonel gives a cheery half hearted wave with a nurual slumbermatic 5399 in her hand. The other hand reaches over and undoes Power Dumps attempt to kill everyone. ” He’ll be out for a quick sec until it is dramatically appropriate for him to wake. I’ll be in the engine room.”

Ramson nods to Lady Arsenal. "Good work, and thanks."

Turning back to the matter at hand, he considers. "Dammit. Okay, so what's the read, here? Was Nemesis looking for the box, too, and didn't find it on board? Or is she just going after them for some other business, in which case she might not have snagged the box at all? I'm all for taking her out of the sky if we get the shot, but business comes first, and our business may still be on the Sovereign."

He shakes his head. "Unless someone comes up with a better idea, I think we have to split forces, here. Death Otter, Nimbus and Fiona, you three dock with the Sovereign and get the box if it's still there. Sa'maku, Kharis, Thissok and I will drag Sleeping Ugly here and take the shuttle to go after Nemesis--or more likely, her flunkies. Lady A, you just need to stay on board and monitor the sensors in case anything comes in hot and the infiltration squad has to evac in a hurry. Any objections? If not, get moving--we don't have time to waste, and whoever gets the box calls it in so that we can all get back here and one the trip."

Sa'Maku relishes the chance to go after Nemesis, she has explaining to do for his embarrassment and ouster from the CAF Marines. Although, killing her outright without proving she and her crew committed the crime he is accused of will do little to restore SakMaku's honor, "I will agree to this plan, but Nemesis has cost me my honor and made my life forfeit. If we can we need to do more than kill her, we must find proof of my innocence."

Never one to underestimate a foe, the big Seljuk dons his marine Exoskeleton armor. The old CAF logos have been blasted off and the plate, while well cared for, shows the dings and burns of more than one scrape. The armor hisses as the hydraulics activate and the environmental seal is established. Checking his coms, Sa slings hi power halbred over his shoulder and hefts his new net gun.

"Let us proceed."

Lady Arsonel storms back in with a cart of food stuffs. She sighs knowing she had some work to do getting Power Dump ready. She nods to the cart while she seals up the ugly bioborg’s lateral straps on his armor. ” Packed you guys all brown bag lunches.” Despite her confidant words the bags are all different colors and shades of green. ” Grackle cakes for the captain with an essence of toad. Everyone else gets protein packs reprocessed with paparika and Jim’s famous hot sauce.” She wipes up some black ooze coming from Power Dumps poop shoot amd snickers and would have lookedsideways at Death Otter and Fiona if she had eyes, instead she just mutters, ” Boys and their toys.” She quickly finishes securing Power Dump’s armor and his cornicopia of weapons. She even stuffs some techno smithy items into the pockets of Power Dumps trench coat and winks at Sam, ” Just some fun things he can play with.”

” Bring the big guy back captain otherwise I’ll just die.”

More seriously, he turns to Sa'maku, and claps the big Seljuk on the shoulder. "I understand. We'll do everything we can to exonerate you, my friend. Maybe threaten to feed that weasel, Royce, to Power Dump unless he coughs up the evidence you need." He pauses, considering. "Do your people recognize mind-rips as valid evidence? We could maybe capture one of the crew who knows something, then just present them for a scan."

A couple of days in hyperspace had shown her just how eclectic the crew is. From honor bound warriors to incontinent rogue gunbrothers and several points in between. Ohh we even have a rival crew, this should be fun

"Love the plan dearie. You're right that we can't discount that they may be after the Sovereign crew for other reasons and have left our target undisturbed aboard said ship. I do wonder two things however. How much of their crew is aboard the shuttle and thus what your expected resistance may be. Secondly, where their ship is and it's remaining complement. Perhaps I'm wrong but won't docking with the Sovereign will reveal us to the Pursuit? Not that I have a plan that mitigates these unknowns, just thought we should be aware of these potential complications."

"Well I dunno who's on the shuttle," Death Otter says as she spins in her seat. "But if they want to throw down with the Sovereign's crew, they'll want as many of those meatbags as they can fit."

"As for revealing ourselves, nope. All we have to do is wait a second or two for their shuttle to start atmospheric entry. They're in a big rush by the locks of it, so they'll probably hit it hard...get a nice re-entry corona going. There's NOTHING that blinds sensors and comms like being ENVELOPED in a big ball of screaming plasma from air friction. Hm. Band name candidate."

"Anyway, we SHOULD keep an eye out for the Pursuit, but we ALSO have to hit the Sovereign ourselves. Can't trust that they weren't just too THICK to FIND the box, as opposed to the box not BEING there."

Ramson nods to Fiona. "Death Otter addressed most of the questions--including the odds that the big guns are on that shuttle. As for the Pursuit proper, well, we haven't spotted her yet--which means she probably doesn't have eyes on the Sovereign, either, unless they've got cloaking we can't beat--if that turns out to be the case, well, then, we do what we can to get out of whatever mess arises. But that's one of the other reasons Nimbus is going with you--with some effort, he could teleport all three of you back onto our ship if an emergency departure is called for. It's difficult for him, but I trust he'll pull it off if he has to--and he's got some decent combat capability as well, just in case they did leave one of their number behind."

He'll look around for a moment, waiting for any other concerns, then directs the shuttle team to get aboard so they can launch as soon as their counterpart from the Nemesis hits the atmosphere.

Kharis stretches. Finally, a chance to get off this boat and do something useful!

"To the shuttle, then. Before we start: none of you would happen to have a magical headache cure, would you? Now that we're out of FTL... well, it will still take me a while to get rid of this blasted headache, and I'd be much obliged if anyone had a way to speed that up."
FTL Sickness = 1 level of Fatigue for Kharis
It will eventually go away on its own, but in the meanwhile, he's at a little less than full strength.
