03.1 A Sovereign in Paradise

Post by Ndreare »

Crew: Death Otter, Nimbus, and Fiona

Sovereign what a cocky name for a ship. As you move forward on the Sovereign the computer sends an automated hailing response warning The Remorseless that the ship is not derelict and that security measure will be taken to prevent unauthorized approach.
But these responses are nothing unexpected to Death Otter. She would have been surprised if they did not have at least a basic AI or security system aboard the ship to protect it while they were away. A few lines of code and maybe little luck with the old code she helped them set up when they got the ship should do it.
That is when the plan gets a little more complicated. The backdoors have been replaced, she is going to have to hack into this thing actually using her skills!

Instructions
Hacking into this ship’s security will be tough. You are competing against the Ships AI, which appears to be running a grade IV counter system.
This is a SWADE style Dramatic task. This means the ships defence is going to be rolling a d10+6 versus your attempts to hack it. You will have 3 turns to accumulate 5 successes or the ship will identify you are an intruder and begin firing on the Remorseless.

Unfortunately to make matters worse, the threat is triggered as soon as you begin transmitting so even escaping will require 2 successes with declared intent.

Nimbus and Fiona, you may perform a Cooperative roll for Death Otter if you have some idea or skill relevant to the task.

  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Death Otter actually cracked open her battered old co-processor for this one, interfacing with it and handing off mundane tasks like routing and simple decryption so her own clock cycles were free for the heavier lifting. Holographic displays lit up in the air around her, the text and images flashing faster than an unaugmented human eye would be able to make out as she bombarded the Sovereign's security system with parallel brute-force credential hacks, and simultaneously looking for system exploits to force it to crash and reset.

Dorian was no slouch when it came to programming and security. But he was also no Death Otter.

While not a professional hacker Fiona has both training and enhancements in that area. She sets up her computer and a subtle shift in her happens. Her smile becomes a little less vibrant and her microexpressions are fewer and more subtle. Meanwhile her neurons expand in the areas of information intake and processing.

"While certainly no where near as skilled as you dear, I am a passable hacker. Please allow me to help with support tasks."

Seeing that the other two have it covered, Nimbus triple checks his equipment, flexing the fingers tightly gripped by the buzzsaw glove.

The attempted breach did not appear to be one of the crew, but possibly. The process of verifying identity was simply and the improved power provided by her engineer was helping, but not enough.

"Gah, Fiona, take the garble," Otter said, frowning. "there's an active process rewriting the indexes I have to get ahead of."

She sat back and her head sort of slumped to one side, no longer bothering to use her eyes to try to interface with the data anymore. Everything was going straight to, and through her brain and the implants that peppered it, conducted along by nerves augmented by nanotech into something not easily catalogued as strictly human, nor strictly machine.

Now, with the system's main defenses laid bare, a last ditch routine was trying to reset the cracked codes, locking them out again. They were close though, if Death Otter was fast enough to beat a computer at its own game!

Meanwhile, a mountain of hashed data landed on Fiona's computer, needing to be decrypted and fed back to Otter so she could keep the 'window' they'd made open while she worked.

While the mass of incoming files looks overwhelming, the ex-spy is able to handle herself admirably. Further expanding the neurons in the processing centers of her brain she works like a woman possessed. Decrypted files fly from her computer almost too fast for D0 at first, but the hacker wasn't expecting them so quickly and was working down to what she expected from Fiona. Seeing that she doesn't need to frees the hacker up to go full bore into the remains of the Sovereigns code.

Death Otter, her face squinching slightly, in rapid microexpressions that made it look a little like she was getting electric shocks, assembled the data from Fiona into a rapid barrage of access breaches that fanned out over a wide range of subsystems, forcing the AI to divide its attention to account for them all. At this point, it was essentially a test of the computer's hardware. All the expert coding in the world couldn't protect a system that couldn't allocate enough resources to meet the demand.

AI Roll[dice:f05z726e]51457:0[/dice:f05z726e]

Dang that was shameful. Not even worth a Benny going up against so many player bennies.
The AI, finally responds as expected and greets the crew of the Remorseless on board. Docking is nearly faultless as the two AI's work in tandem to perform an otherwise complex maneuver.

How do you go in? Expecting an empty ship without any boobie traps or are you more cautious of the enemies left on board?

Re: 03.1 A Sovereign in Paradise

Post by Fiona Gladbrooke »

As the ships perform docking maneuvers Fiona goes over her gear kit. Weapons were loaded and freely accessible, her field computer secured behind her back, and spare rounds tucked into her coat. She opts to keep her mental enhancements tuned to infiltration for now in case locks prove an issue and arranges her armor as a slim commercial model with lots of freedom of movement. Pulling her advanced scanner from a coat pocket, the rogue Imperial begins to calibrate it to scan for hidden compartments and other unusual features. @Nimbus @Death Otter "So while I do know Heish from years ago, I don't know the mind of his captain. Would Nemesis have left surprises for your friends which we should be wary of?" She then adds things like laser tripwires and the hidden frequencies often used by remote spy devices to the parameters of the devices scans.

He nods. "Nemesis is a real piece of work. She's basically an evil genius, so I wouldn't put anything past her. We need to tread lightly. How are we getting to the ship? I can teleport us if need be... but I don't know if they would've left anyone behind, or what."

"Oh they did," Death Otter says, wiping her forehead as her overclocked nervous system cycled down to a more sedate cruising speed. "Left a couple of them, in fact. Little bugs in the ship network. Which means they breached, big surprise...but if the ship has any automatic defenses, they could be set to attack right now. And if there weren't any...well...there could be now."

"So I recommend treating this as a hostile environment."

"I see, going in hot then." Fiona switches the scanner to her offhand and draw a very large pistol. Her body language and stance change subtly as the alterations to her mind and body shift to enhance coordination and reflexes. As the air lock slowly opens the reduced crew of the Remorseless is on edge. But when the door fully opens they are able to see no threats. Having verified there is no one on board the crew is able to move on safely. A place this large will take a couple hours to search so there is little time to waste. One thing that will aid the search is the vehicle is pristine in every way. Not a spec of dust out of place or a single piece of clothing unfolded.

Fiona stands behind cover as the airlock slides open. Of course the apprehension of it all makes the process seem like it's taking eternity but it finally opens to reveal... nothing out of the ordinary. Giving the airlock of the Sovereign a once over with her sensor array, she declares it safe to enter. "If you two want to hit the more obvious places I'll look about for smuggler holds. It looks like the same make and model as the Remorseless, so that should make it pretty easy to find any simple ones they might have added. Although it occurs to me any internal surveillance may show us where in the ship it was last." Aside from Duckies stash of depression cookies however, Fiona finds nothing too interesting in her scans of the crews quarters. She snags a cookie and moves on to other areas of the ship. They are similarly uninteresting.

"Someone check the cargo bay. They'd have this thing either secured, or hidden...pretty hard to do both without affecting the deckplan," Otter says with a yawn. "Imma check the bridge, look at their sensor records. It's possssssssible they stashed it off-ship somewhere."

Otter strolled through the Sovereign, comparing each bulkhead, each panel, to the detailed schematics of the Remorseless she had access to. Any variation would be cause for investigation. As she went she also queried the now-compliant ship's computer for records of any planets visited between their departure from Phase World and their arrival on Paradise.

En route she passed the galley and noticed a...jar of cookies? Was it her birthday?!

A moment later, Otter was leaving the galley one cookie shy of a jar full.

The search of the ship shows little out of place as if the entire thing has been serviced by a very expensive made. This effort has made it incredibly easy to search the ship. The entire task only taking about two hours to feel with 100% certainty that the box is not on the ship. Even worse reviewing the ships logs going back to the the time when the job was completed shows the box was never even brought on board!

Dorian that arrogant bastard must have taken it to a bank or something on phase world. This entire leg of the trip was for naught.

After snooping around the Sovereign for a couple hours and finding nothing remotely like their target Fiona rejoins the others on this part of the mission. "Hmm, well I've been over every nook and cranny of this ship and the only things I've found is they have good taste in snacks, this "Ducky" has a very sad and mismatched wardrobe, and I think a homeless person was living in one of the cabins. I'm guessing neither of you found it either. Perhaps they're here to sell it and it's on planet with them?"

"No."

Otter came back to rejoin the others after harrowing the ship's computer of every bit of data she could find.

"It was never on the ship. It's either still on Phase World, or he sent it offworld on some other transportation. No records of what they did on the ship..."

She inhaled deeply. "Sooooooooooo...guess we'll have to go ask."

The watching the feedback Death Otter sees the board light up. It seems the Sovereign crew is aboard their ship again. Wow, how did they get back so fast. Even a fast ship should take longer than that to get up here.

Better let the ground crew know!

Suddenly a page comes through. You are being hailed by the Sovereign. Thinking Quickly Death Otter patches the call through to everyone.

"Remorseless Crew, this is Que, thanks for cleaning our ship, but what did you want?"

Death Otter scowled, but only for a moment. That actually simplified things.

"Hey, Captain," she called to the surface team. "When are you going to get us some real money so we can get one of those fancy teleporter things, so you can get back up here so we can let them lead us to the thing that will get us some real money...oh shit, hang on."

Data started flickering in the edges of her awareness from the software she'd left in the Sovereign's systems. Power Dump nattered away at Que, which was useful to keep them distracted and complacent. Otter stayed focused on what her little present was telling her...until the feed suddenly terminated.

She grinned.

"Anyway. Ground team. Any of you guys happen to be near the Mirage?"

Receiving the coordinates from the stranded fighter reveals it to be only an hour from the current location near the edge of this system. Without an FTL system the ship would take years to make it planet side. The AI sets in and the arriving at the location you see the ship not to bad off and apparently hardly damaged at all. The kittani always made great technology, wit ha skill matching that of the naruni and altes.

The docking procedure takes less than 5 minutes allowing Rinoa and the Remorseless Crew to interact for the first time in person while the AI returns to the planet.

Rinoa gets out of her Robot Fighter after it is docked. "Greetings, Rinoa Crescent." She says as Fiona comes up to her.

In said bay after the newcomer disembarks Fiona gives her a friendly wave as she approaches. The shapeshifter does not hide that she is both armed and armored but stands in a relaxed manner. Rinoa takes a step back as she hears the voice in her head. She doesn't resist the mind probe as she feels she has nothing to hide.

Her thoughts
Rinoa was a member of the crew on a ship called Ragnarok. There were 6 members of the crew.

Squall is the captain of the Ragnarok.

She and Squall were members of a freedom fighter movement in the past.

She doesn't actually think Squall sucks, he was pretty good in bed. she is just a bit bitter at him right now for being left behind. He would have to really make it up to her to get her back now though. So I guess that he sucks was a lye.

The Ragnarok was here on a mission to guard a Mekakur ship but they ship was ahead of them and disappeared before they could get here.

The contract got cancelled but they were trying to find the missing ship when they were attacked by the Pursuit.

Rinoa had gone out in her robot armor during the fight with the Pursuit but her ship, the Ragnarok was taking too much damage so they left. Without her.

Rinoa had to flee after the battle, she was able to keep ahead of the Pursuit in her transformable Robot Fighter by putting it into Fighter mode and she made it to an asteroid field to hide in. The Pursuit gave up chase after that and left.

After some time had past she started heading back planet side but it would take her a while to make that trip so she eventually turned on her distress beacon.

She started singing eventually cause she was getting bored.

Fiona smiles at the girls open attitude. "How refreshingly guileless you are. My name is Fiona and as I said, odd timing. We're currently in competition with them in a bit of a scavenger hunt. Our Captain and most of the crew are dirtside scaring up leads, possibly literally, and have come into conflict with them there."

"It is odd timing. A hunt? What are you looking for? I wonder." Rinoa ponders for a second. "Is this related to the missing ship?"

"You mean the missing Kittani fighter?" asks Death Otter as she strolls into the hangar and starts looking the craft over. "You're not one of them so...guessing you stole it. Which is looking PRETTY GOOD on your resume, gotta admit. 'Course...does mean the naughty TENTACLES are after you, but at this point just about every OTHER player in the three galaxies is after us, so may as well see how high we can stack 'em."

She looks at Fiona. "They need us planetside. There's a lead down there and I'm pretty sure they'll leave the Mirage a smoldering ruin if we don't hold their hands and baby-walk them through it."

Then to Rinoa, "How many does that thing seat?"

"The squidbillys do sell these things to TGE rebels on the cheap... so she could be one of them. Meaning that the Imps are after her and the rebels would probably like their fighter back." With a laugh like a crystal bell she turns back to Rinoa. "The empire probably wants me a lot more darling, don't fret it. Like Otter implied, we're all fugitives here. So what are you're plans now that you're orphaned?"

The rogue agent perks up at the mention on the Mirage. "Oh, really? How wonderful. And I agree those boys do seem very excitable. A place like the Mirage requires subtlety." Looking down at her armor and coat. "Hmm. I think I have just the dress and face for the occasion. Be back in a jiffy." She heads to her quarters to change.

Rinoa looks a bit in surprise as Death Otter comes up and implies her robot is stolen. "Angelo only seats one, unfortunately. It has a small cargo area but that might be a tight fit for a person."

"Not the first time I have been orphaned. I was part of a freedom fighter cell against the TGE years ago, but the cell got wiped out. That's where Angelo came from. Spulgies proved us with it to fight the empire." She points at the Kittani fighter. "Squall and myself survived and we went mercenary. I guess right now I'm looking for a crew. My resume, well I pilot that robot armor and i can pilot other ships as well. I'm also a pretty good shot with a gun."

"Mirage, huh? Pretty upstanding place there. I guess I'm coming with then. Not like you would leave me here on your ship yet. I think I got a change of clothes in my robot though. Got a place I can change?"

"You can do it right here," Death Otter chortled. "We're all girls here."

She looked at Fiona. "Well, two of us are girls, and one of us is...whatever. Close enough."

"BUUUUUUT if you're shy, that door over there's where the lockers and 'suit-up' station are." Otter waved a hand negligently at a small door across the hangar.
