9.0 Strange New World

Post by Ndreare »

As the crew sets in and assignments are made between the mages on board the ship is able to limp along. Operating the ship without an AI requires constant attendance. Crews are needed to work full time on repairs during the two days it takes to follow the dragons who left for the planet. While the engineers work in rotation perpetually feeding a trickle power into the system to allow it to keep going. Without a battery to act as a buffer the ship needs the power constantly provided.

Two of the frightening beings trapped in the ship's former battery decide to offer to move ahead to the nearest inhabited planet and see what resources are available. The third offering to stay with the ship and communicate. The news comes as a relief as this means the monstrous beasts will not be trouble. But it is a complete surprise when they even extend an offer to take one of you with them, flying on the back of a dragon! Fiona is selected to represent the team, borrowing armor from the Crew to keep her alive on the trip.

The rifts drive normally capable of going as much as four light years in an hour of jumps is questionable as the risk of running into something along the way is high, forcing the crew to land on a nearby planet. The slow sub-light journey took just over two days.

Arrival...
As the dragons arrive near the planet they slow themselves, and begin entry. The descent only takes about an hour. But as they get closer to the planet they feel the arcane energy waning low. As if the planet itself were averse to the arcane.

Landing they find a world very lightly populated with strange creatures. Huge strangely formed men and women, some standing near 15’ tall, others tiny as fairies, each misanthropic as if somehow the lack of similarity was the only true similarity among them. Looking at the tiny strange newcomers, they do not react to your arrival as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened when you walk into the city.

Instructions
The ship is in rough shape. You need three task each with two tokens. Failure means you stall the ship and need to try again.
Roll the following skill. Success grants a token, a raise grants two.
Pilot the Ship = Roll Piloting, can be supported by electronics or repair.
Maintain the ships status = Roll repair or electronics, can be supported with repair, strength or electronics.
Wrangle the crew = Roll Persuasion, Intimidation, or Strength -4. Can be supported with the same skills.

The landing crew
This is an RP experience, but please include a Notice and a Persuasion roll in your post.
There are less than 2,500 people on this planet, so word travels fast
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

The crew was a horrendous lot. He did not think you could fall further from the discipline of the space marines than he had seen on the Remorseless - was was wrong. Sa'Maku is appalled at their lack of discipline, regard for one another, and regard for authority. The only law they seem to respect is the law of the jungle. Unfortunately for them, the Seljuk are lords of the jungle. Patrolling the ship Sa'Maku finds the easiest way to stamp out insurrection is to literally stomp on people. After a few trips to the infirmary most of the crew began to tow the line, and for the more recalcitrant types Sa brought back up - in the form of a recently liberated dragon happy to lord of his former captors.

@Kalaetheryan finds the change into his smaller humanoid form difficult for some reason. But once his transformation is complete the from settle in on him like the only form he ever knew.

Fiona smiles as one would to a clever child. It is warm and without condescension. "Darlings, I am here on this ride because of my skills at negotiation and information gathering, this literally is my job. " She then focuses on the people around them to pick up minutia like body language, use of tone and inflection in voice, and social gestures. The million little things that make up the ways beings wordlessly communicate that vary from culture to culture. She points some of these out to the brothers as they walk the settlement before she suggests they hit up an open air market.

"See us a bit more of how they interact and maybe find some leads on parts dealers."

Fiona finds her natural adaption to the cultures and languages around her being strained. Normally the abilities are so natural and inherent to her she forgets to even think of them. But here if feels as if she is reaching through a pile of sand to make it happen.

As Sa'maku works on getting the crew in line, Mal is an ever-present figure in the background, the large Oni form suitable for looming menacingly. Whenever some of the crew seem unimpressed with the Seljuk's physical might, Mal follows along, and murmurs to the more recalcitrant types, "Oh, I know, in the long run magic almost always beats brawn. But what happens when someone who is principally magical encounters someone with brawn AND magic?" On each occasion, the question is punctuated with a delicate and intricate cantrip, the kind of thing wizards use amongst themselves to demonstrate competence and settle bar-tabs. Mal's own demonstrations on this occasion are flawless, emphasizing to the magically inclined crew that hijinks would definitely be ill-advised, and shenanigans are right out.

Death Otter is not a mechanic...she leaves that distinction to other members of the old Otter family tree, and they're welcome to it. But she does know her way around computers and other electronic gear...and as fate would have it, a lot of the damaged systems on the Peacekeeper are that. As such, Death Otter spends a lot of her time swapping burned out components for fresh ones (where fresh ones are available), running bypasses around damaged systems that can't be immediately fixed, and otherwise making sure the ship stays working until real repairs can be made... It's not that different from overclocking or defeating security, really. Only the outcomes are different.

Planet Side consequences
@Kalaetheryan, @Zilaetheryan, and @Fiona Gladbrooke

Those of you planet side find all arcane abilities are -4 on this planet, those that normally require no roll, now require a Spirit -2 roll.
.
.
.
The landing party finds they are able to easily fit in with the strange supernatural population of the planet. Occasionally people will look at you strange as if you were missing a leg or something. But the general response is as if Minotour and flying dragons are daily occurrences.

The entire population being supernatural is something not often seen. They respond well to Fiona’s questions, however at mention of the need for parts for a ship their interest perks. “You have a ship that can get off the planet?” the most common question. Which leads to a series of overly helpful people as the realization that this planet is essentially a prison of some sort. The population is more than willing to help you, but they want you to take some of them with you when you leave.

Finally the team is approached by a horrific looking being apparently made of blood and nothing else. “Hey, looking for some serious gear? The name is Howard, and I have both a machine shop and employees with the skill to make what you will need. We can work up what you need, but we will all want a way off the planet. if we give you these parts.” The man seems honest and straightforward, but his monstrous appearance is enough to make even your team uncomfortable.

A series of negotiations work out. He is able to help with material costs, with labor, and with his shop as long as you are willing to take them off planet as well. He must be on the first ship off the planet, before he will send more parts. But he and his machines are needed to help measure on board.

-----------------------------
Work on the ship goes well, Sa’Maku and Mal are able to easily control the crew and keep them in line. Brockner is able to lead some of the crews in repair of the ship, but Death Otter has trouble controlling the ship itself. having to be satisfied with keeping it on heading and maintained.

Overall the progress for the planet is slow and without a ships AI for automated course corrections the need for a pilot becomes progressively more obvious.

Now that the crew is under control piloting the ship is the only task left. Death Otter’s efforts have stabilized the ship a bit (providing +2 offset to the -4 penalty) but the ship will still need manual guidance to get to the planet for orbit.

instructions
@Sa’Maku, @Malaetheryan, and @Death Otter

Okay the crew is fully under control.
I am declaring Brokner functions as an NPC in the background and is moderating the repairs until you get to the planet.

Turn 2
Piloting will still require two successes rolling Piloting -4, electronics, or repair can support. +2 carry over from Fiona's previous post.

Fly a ship?

The challenge was daunting. The best kind really. Although accepting a challenge without the skill to complete was not brave, it was foolish. And yet, here he was in a pilot's chair acting the fool.

Basic piloting was part of his marine training but managing a ship like this, with no AI and extensive damage was well beyond the basics.

Relying on the others for support Sa'Maku takes the helm. Flight is like fight really. Read, react. anticipate adjust. After a series of very over correction the big guy gets the hang of it and settles into a groove. Not everything is perfect, however.

Kal's eyes narrow at the blood-creature. He addresses Howard. "What is your disagreement with this planet that you wish to leave it so urgently? Tell me, also, why you cannot fabricate some kind of craft to facilitate your own exit, if you have the equipment necessary to repair our ship." He asks the questions, though the answer to the first one is obvious to anyone even remotely magically aware. The atmosphere is oppressive to him, smothering his mystic sensitivity.

Meanwhile. Elsewhere on the ship...

Bone on Metal. The Alu carried a bone spear and every step she took down the metal hallway of the Peacemaker space ship she purposely tapped the bone on Metal. Annoying echoes spiraled outward. Walking in front of her was the blond, long haired, broad shouldered, short, maybe six feet short compared to her 8 feet of height, ridiculously dressed human male.

It hurt her eyes walking behind the powerful Shifter, those neon green and yellow spandex pants! They ruined the pleasure of looking at the ass in them. It was the colors, as if he planned the worst colors to wear. Why he had a pink bandanna on his head she could not fathom. The only thing he wore the devil approved of was the enchanted black leather coat.

It baffled her how this human had become famous. He irritated her. His smooth voice and musical talent coupled by insanely wild antics. She’d been bound to him since Wonderworld in Center. Nearly a week of slavery to this galactic rocker was driving her mad. Thus, her not so subtle attempts to annoy him. Bone on Metal. Tap. Tap. Tap.

Growling softly and in her own thoughts the Alu nearly missed what he had said.

“What?!”

Turning to face her Killian Blaze Starr smiled at her and stated:

“Azgeggla. Your True Name. I feel like I’m chocking on my finger when I say it. I said you are dismissed. Be gone. I won’t need you to carry my luggage anymore. I’m thinking I’ll stay on the ship. I got the jewelry I came looking for. If you’d rather I can just have you sit outside in cold space until I remember you’re there. I’ll summon you some other day, if I need. Now go away. You’re cramping my style.”

“I ... your Wonderworld concert was ... dumb, I hate you Killian...”
the Alu disappeared.

Azgeggla gone, Killian motioned gagging images, finger in mouth, where she once stood. Chuckling he spoke aloud to himself as he walked further down the hallway looking for one person in particular.

“Wonderworld is one of the largest tourist attractions in all of phase world. There are more stores, shops, hotel rooms and entertainment per square mile in that sector than anywhere in the three galaxies. I swear it has everything one could want and more, weapons, armor, exotic perfume, spandex and other trendy streetwear. The concert I put on there netted a nice profit. And those green groupie twins backstage......”

Rounding the corner and walking into a new hallway he sees the woman he has been looking for.

@Death Otter

Killian pauses and coughs lightly, subtly making his presence known. He feels the energy radiate off the woman as he approaches her.

Snorting derisively at himself and at his nervousness Killian mutters out possible new lyrics:

“Summer nights. Shine with me. Oh girl... Come with me. Under a vicious Starr you can shine tonight. Yeeeeeeeeeahhhhhhhh you can shine tonight, under a vicious Starr.... “

Stopping a few feet away from Death Otter the Shifter smiles and seemingly out of nowhere produces a data-music-chip, a glamorous pic of him on it, signed, and offers it out towards the woman.

“I’m Killian. I like your hair. It makes me... hard to think when I’m looking at all that fantastic pink. It’s radical for sure. I think I’d like to write a song about you.”

He slows his roll some and smiles.

“Sorry I’m a Promethians dick. I haven’t... been real with anyone in a long time. Like I say. I am Killian Starr of Vis, Vicious Intergalactic Starr - the band. I have a proposal for you. I see you have recently acquired this ship. I was here on business - which is done now. I’m. Free. Well ya, not free, I’m never free, but I am between gigs and I’d like to work with you. I’ve spent too much time on a quaint planet called Earth and I want to spend more time out in the three galaxies. New stomping grounds so to speak. Earth has gotten too hot for me. I need a change of pace. I am ... a Shifter, Artifact Hunter, Bounty Collector, Galactic Rock Star, I’m sure you must have heard of me? Regardless I’m looking to try something new. You and your crew impressed me, taking this ship. I spent a little time hmmm, checking you each out, observing you and I think I’d be an asset to your team. Plus. Honestly. I’m fascinated by your team’s efficiency. As, Vis, I worked alone. I hired band members at each location I played, but never keep them on. I like you...r team and would like to throw in with you if you’ll have me. I’ve noticed you are lacking a, Spellcaster shall we say. What do you think?”

Flashing a fabulous smile he gave Death Otter a chance to reply.

Fame Note
Famous Edge: Well known in the Intergalactic Music Industry. You might have heard of him, seen him live or broadcasted on Video, or maybe it was an elevator music thing.... the Band VIS and name Killian Starr - in all the wide wide Three Galaxies - it’s possible you’ve heard his music and/or of his glam metal antics.

Having so far just quietly watched and listened Fiona decided it was time to speak up before any promises were assumed by the being. In a business like tone she breaks in. "All of you? That may not even be possible depending on how many "all" is Howard. Then there is the question of your destination. Would you expect us to take you to those who imprisoned you? An act that would involve us in your quest for revenge even if only in the eyes of your persecutors. Or would you wish transport somewhere to bid your time and plan your retribution." She pauses to let the questions sink in, smiles in a more friendly manner, and continues. "So before we make any hard promises a bit more knowledge of your situations past and at least a vague idea of how much help you want and need would be wonderful."

Howard seems to have no reserves as he explains. "We were in a war. We shared our planet with a race called humans, much like your current form or hers." He indicates Fiona or the form that you now wear. "They, had sorcerers among them. Most where minor, and died after very short lives. But some of them discovered the secrets of immortality. These the greatest of human sorcerers rose and soon had power enough that they were as gods, able to bend reality itself around them. We were loosing the war, but not fast enough for their leaders. So the most powerful among them, the one we considered their leader Lord Deception* created a great ritual which banished us all here. Nearest we can tell we have been trapped here for close to 80 years, our powers crushed on this small planet we lost a small few at first as we tamed the world, but all who remain are warriors. Fighting is as natural to our people as breathing."
*You psionic powers of translation translate the word as Lord Deception. But you know it is not right and the name feels wrong.

"So we do not need you to take all of us off planet. But even a dozen would be enough we could once again access our rightful abilities and find help for getting the rest of us off this planet and eventually back to our home planet ground."

As he is talking he stops and waits in response to your communication radio coming to life. The Peacemaker has arrived and landed on the moon. Seeing you will need to speak with you crew Howard shows you to an open field where privacy can be had while he waits near the factory. The hundreds of people watching you anxious for your answer.

"Prepare for moon landing," Sa'Maku hissed into the ships coms. He was no expert pilot by any means. The fact that he had safely navigated them saafe thus far was more luck and guts than ability. Relying on those two thinks too often was a receipe for an early death. They would need a pilot very soon, after they excelled all the ruffians and cut throats from this ship.

The mystic crew was too invested in the pirate life to learn to be part of the Remorseless team...Sa'Maku already feared he was descending into the dishonorable trade. He didn't need to be immersed in it. This mission was fruitful, but costly, they needed to get back to the Nemesis before more of the team - and their mission - was lost.

Setting harder than he would have liked Sa'Maku sat back from the controls.

Fiona listens to how the strange people came to be here and wonders what else there is to the situation. With the environment hampering her shape shifting and telepathy it was a safe bet her probing minds for the truth would be risky. Hopefully it wouldn't matter if all they needed was a few taken somewhere to make their own further arrangements.

In the field she thanks their host for his consideration and once he's walking away calls the ship. "Remorseless 2, this is Fiona. Hope your trip was boring. We've met the locals, an odd bunch, not sure what they are but they are willing to offer the use of a factory for fabrication in return for passage for several of them off world. I'm no tech expert but it seems like they'll be able to deal with most of the mundane replacements. Kal follows @Fiona Gladbrooke into the field. Waiting until Howard has reached a reasonable distance to preclude all but the sharpest ears from hearing, he whispers in draconic to his teammate. "I know all too well what it means to be imprisoned and deprived of...or even abused for your power. Were I weaker, I might let sympathy cloud my judgment. However, even this seemingly reasonable and pitiable story merits caution." He turns to @Zilaetheryan, addressing both his brother and Fiona. "I would tend to agree with allowing their people to board. Necessity makes this our only option. We should, most assuredly, have individual escorts near them during their time on our ship. In addition, while looks may be deceiving..." He smiles wryly at Fiona. "...I would prefer to choose which of their members join us, with the aim of taking the weakest of their numbers should they decide to betray our good faith."
With that, he stands by and watches the ship's final descent and heavy landing. "Perhaps we should seek out a dedicated pilot while we are here."

Receiving the transmission from Fiona Sa'Maku knows the life pods are all still fully capable of shuttling back and forth from the planet, though they would be limited to only 4 at a time and prevent some of the larger species from going.

On the planet @Kalaetheryan, and @Zilaetheryan are frustrated to find their forms reverting back to their dragon form against their will as the suppressive effect of the planet takes hole. Even @Fiona Gladbrooke finds her form struggling to stay as she has chosen, knowing that within the hour the effect will collapse completely.

Overall the situation is miserable for any arcane user, but shape shifters in particular are suffering more than others.

Aboard Ship
@Death Otter
Decide if you are sending pods down and how many.

Logistically it would be best to send down as much as you can spare, but also keep one on the ship for an emergency in case of betrayal.

Engineers from the ship can go down with data that can be provided to the crews bellow and a few of those selected from bellow can come up to ensure specific measurements. Or in some cases offer alternative solutions.

If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

Zil frowns to find himself involuntarily back in his dragon form.

”Well, that is annoying.”

He stalks around a bit, not entirely sure what to do now that the ship has landed and they have secured a deal of sorts for repairs.

Asking the odd creature with whom they have been speaking, ”what do you so for entertainment here?”

"I’ve noticed you are lacking a, Spellcaster shall we say. What do you think?”

Death Otter watched the rock star go on for a bit, then yawned and pulled the earphones out of her ears.

"I did catch the end of that," she said. "And what I THINK, citing all that jaw flapping as exhibit A, is that you like to hear yourself make noise. Like, a lot."

Otter reached out to deftly pluck the data chip from him, then examined its' augmented-reality ID. For a second she eyed the album cover portrait, then Killian, then the portrait again. Then she transfered the chip to her other hand.

"Damn. The years ain't kind, eh? Maybe write a song about that."

"OKAY THEN. You're from Earth, possibly the worst planet EVER, and basically a stowaway...though I guess technically you were stowing away before we took the ship so that's not OUR bad. Generally the policy for stowaways revolves around AIRLOCKS, but as it HAPPENS we are in the market for a shifter."

She whirled around and gestures, bringing up a series of holographic displays from the panels she was working on.

"Ship uses a tech-wizard Rift drive for FTL travel. The BATTERY was set up to get power from captive, and extremely pissed off, dragons that were in stasis. THAT bridge is burned now, so we need another way to power the drive. You're not a tech-wizard but you should know a thing or two about large-scale, long-range Rifts so...congratulations Enginseer. I've got other crew working on the damaged systems, I want you focused on the Rift drive." Death Otter grimaced a little then and pointed at Killian. "And other spellcasting-related duties as needed."

"So this'll be your probation then. Show us what you can do here and now, and you'll get a chance to put those artifact-hunting, bounty collecting credentials to the test. I am just gonna copy some work orders for you here..." Otter started gesturing, 'grabbing' screen after screen of lists and throwing them at her other hand, where they seemed to vanish into something she was holding there.

There was a lot.

When the screens were all empty she held her hand out...and in it was the data-chip Killian had offered her. Otter grinned. "When you get through these, give me a comm. We'll have more for you by then."

"Welcome abooooooard..."

Post from a Killian (retired character)

THE HALLWAY

Death Otter was talking...
Rift Jump Drive. Cool!

I went to a party last Saturday night....uh huh.... I didn’t get....yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhh....

Killian smiles broadly, nodding his head rhythmically as Death Otter talked. A Rift Jump Drive. As interested as he was in the pink haired hottie, her words were lost as he realized he was going to have access to a Arrrr Jay Dee.

Come on pretty baby, set sail on my solar wings, yeeeeah.

It takes larger amounts of magic energy to breach the interdimensional fabric than to jump from one location within a dimension to another, guiding and directiong rifts was nothing new to Killian. This will be interesting.

!!!! Wait. What did she say? Aged better?

As Death Otter handed back his data chip he frowned.

Okay. Some hide that turned on taste...

better than others.

“Aye Cap’n O, fix yar Star Drive before I gets to go hunt’n space loot. Thanks.”

ENGINEERING ROOM

The dimensional fabric of this realm was basic. Cosmicly. Killian thought to himself as he sat in the head officers chair in the ship’s engineering area. Moving one thing from one place to another in the same dimension was easier than from dimension to dimension regardless of size, mass or such. Reading the displays in the large RJD room he figured it took more to move one man from one existence to another than 100 men within the same existence.

The Rift Jump Drive opens two rifts, one at the ships location and one at its destination. The ship then travels between the two. As the ship does so it crosses across a flux dimension, then emergages light years away. The cost to open these two Rifts is paid for by a cadre of spellcasters or use of PPE batteries, I summon demons. Syphon them... this cadre of a spellies and their inner energies.....or I just use my power to pull us about.

As the engineering crew assembled to listen to their new boss, Killian stood and smiled at the two dozen crew assigned to the RJD.

About to speak Killian overheard one young engineering, female Noro, saying to a human woman:

”I swear. He looks like Killian Blaze Starr’s father!”

Gods damn it. If people knew how hard it was to stay in spandex pants shape, ugh. Pointing at the Noro woman Killian demanded:

”What’s your name!”

“Cesssi”

“Well Cesssi. The new captain re-assigned you to security. Go trade in your blues for a red shirt and report to security ASAP! Go!”

...you can never escape from your heart...

Okay people! I am Killian Blaze Starr! We are getting this ship Jump ready in one hour or I’m floating you all! I can open the damned rifts myself...but fuck that. You are going to reroute power systems and set up new battery containers. Let’s see what’s outside or summonable to get these four batteries filled.

In roughly 45 minutes from walking into engineering, explaining who he was, musically and commanding engineer, Killian had the Rift Jump Drives functioning once again. Just barely. But functionally usable.

Using the cadre of casters and his own knowledge Killian had one jump charged and was working with the crew to fill the batteries for another. That would take longer. He had informed the crew that at midnight they were to assemble for a ritual and the summoning of a demon to power the ship.

Activating a comm to ship wide commutations.

”Chief engineer Starr here. Prepare for ship wide reboot. We will have thrust and rift jump online in sixty. To do that, well, we are rebooting. You will experience a zero G sit-rep for, and a lack of O2, but, um, rooooock on it’ll be short and then we are a go for thrust and jumps... and the oxygen should flow. Zero G for like 5 minutes people. Then an hour later we can jump.

Okay cut comms Zinkler and flip the reboot switch. Are comms off? Okay cause fuck a cosmo duck odds are this will blow up the ship. Comms are off right? No I won’t sing you a song right now! Flip the switch and pray this fucked plan works.

What Zinkler? What do you mean where’s the off swit...”

SITREP
  • All systems a go.
  • Thrusters are online and Rift Jump Drive set for one jump.
  • Battery back ups in the works.
  • Most of engineering is working...
  • Killian will hunt down Death Otter in later post to ask her opinion on summoning demons to power the ship. Or if she’s not going for that and willing to slow recharge batteries. Just FYI that question is coming.
  • Note to self. Go for jog, pants are little tight. Sigh.

"Agreed." Says Fiona in a voice now quite different than before. She is no longer in her "normal" form, but is in her natural shape. A hairless, seemingly genderless, pale humanoid. "Our ride can't get here soon enough."

While she could maintain her shape shifting a bit longer she figures why prolong the inevitable, there was nothing to gain from struggling to keep her preferred form. But by dropping it now she under sells her abilities to the planets people, something that may prove useful if they end up being less than friendly.

Also, young dragons can be competitive and more than a little superior. No point in possibly bruising their egos just to appease her own vanity.

Kal shrugs. "I prefer this form anyway. Let the facade fall, and everyone here know exactly who they're dealing with." Re-approaching the dragon and the changeling the liaison seems unbothered by the transformation. When Howard speaks his words are about what was expected. "So, what did they say. Are we going to be able to help each other, and are they sending some of those shuttles down?"

@Death Otter I did not see a clear statement, are you sending down any of the shuttles?
You have 8 functioning pods.

The more magical gear needs I'm less sure of as this world has some kind of dampening effect on magic and psionics. Even my abilities are somewhat inhibited here."

Death Otter mulled over the transmission for a minute, then sent a response...

"Define 'several.' We don't have a shuttle anymore, but we can use the escape pods to ferry people around. Figure up to thirty-two at a time. Also, define 'off-world.' Are they demanding a ride on the ship to another solar system? Or is there somewhere in-system they want to go? Not to MENTION this is a tech-wizard ship...like seventy-five percent of it's...ugh...you know what? Nevermind the magic. It's fine, I have it covered. The old crew had a Shifter stowing away and he wanted to join up, so I have him working on the rift drive. If he comes through, he can head up repairs on the magic systems."

After another moment of consideration she sent, "I'm gonna send two pods down to get things started, and so they can see you mean business. Let them know there's more where that came from, but we want to see some of their cards before we go all-in. Anything else you need, let me know."

Even as she waited for Fiona's response, D0 started making the needed arrangements for the pods to head down to the surface. One more thing to take care of.

Zil flexes his fingers and claws, digging into the soil of the odd new planet, antsy to be doing something. Five decades stuck in the same room, and now he spends even more time just waiting. Always waiting, it seems.

Flapping his wings a little, he turns to @Fiona Gladbrooke and to @Kalaetheryan, "I need to stretch my wings. I will be back, and then we can take some of these pathetic life forms up to our ship and begin getting on our way. I bore of this place."

With that, he flies off, eager to feel the wind over his wings.

Death Otter considers, then nods.

"Two pods. Don't bring too many up. Sa'Maku's got his claws full with the crew right now and I don't want to pull the new guy off the drive if we don't have to."

Then she went to the console and entered the program to the two escape pods, plotting a descent to Fiona's position and a soft landing in a clear area nearby. Then, deciding to leave nothing to chance, Otter inputs and locks the return trip as well, just in case anyone got bright ideas about trying to steal the damn things.

Warning alarms went off in the Peacekeeper and the corridor lights turned yellow as the pods prepped. The ship rocked a little, signaling that the two vehicles had jetted away into space. Death Otter moved into the bridge to bring them up on the main display, then shot Fiona a quick text-only message.

Pods incoming; ETA 10 minutes. And then a little hand-drawn picture of male genitals just because. It was almost painful having to be 'the responsible one' for this long.

Kal turns to say something to his brother, then thinks better of it. He turns to @Fiona Gladbrooke, regarding her true form no differently than the facade she normally wears. "It is best to let him release some frustration. His temper flashes hotter than most. I pity the creature who draws his ire. You've never seen such fury."
He focuses his mind on @Zilaetheryan as best he can with the interference of this world muddling his thoughts. "Stay close, brother. We have no idea how far our link will travel on this forsaken rock. Advise me if you see anything of note."

As he jumps into flight @Zilaetheryan finds it is much harder than it had ever been before. The magical assistance his will normally offers his flight being gone leaves much more work to be done by his muscles and the effort is as satisfying as an intense workout can be.

When @Sa’Maku climbs in the shuttle he finds it cramped and he easily takes the room needed for two men. The shift into the planet however seems fine and he does not feel the loss the others spoke of. The ride down takes about four hours in the fast escape pods turned shuttles though they dot not handle as well as one would want and too many trips could tax them beyond their threshold.

When Howard is told of the arrangements he selects 4 of his best engineers and has them gather up the tools they will need for monitoring and reviewing the repairs. The five of them are all that is needed to go for now.

Once they are on the ship they quickly begin working with the crews leaders and under the direction of Brokner Jacobi are able to start making measurements and detailed schematics for what he will need.

As @Death Otter begins catching up and cataloging what is needed, she realizes Killian is missing. The shifter may have realized this was to much wasted time and teleported home or something. But he cannot be found on the ship.

Leaving the planet @Zilaetheryan, @Fiona Gladbrooke and @Kalaetheryan find their powers begin returning right away, as the effect begins fading only about 5 miles from the surface until when about 30 miles from the surface the effect is completely removed as if the powers had never been interfered with.

With their help and Brokner directing work he assesses he can get the repairs completed and the ship back in the field within the week. He seems frustrated as somehow Grandma's work has fit far more into this ship than should even be possible, some devices being poli-threaded letting energy flow through in multiple states allowing them to function not just in two, but sometimes more ways.

Howard meets with those of the crew who are interested and is willing to negotiate. He would like himself and 12 others to be allowed to come, they will bring their own supplies and are willing to be dropped off anywhere Civilized. Once away from the planet their supernatural auras are powerful and easily able to be detected by those of you with arcane sense.

As things begin coming together the team needs to make a decision; return for the AIs and enjoy their massive new ship, or sell it and see about purchasing one more easily managed by a smaller crew.
OOC Comments
You can keep the large ship and large crew, but this will change the nature of adventures going forward. Or you can sell it and downsize again letting you take those ultra special jobs you are used to.

Sorry there are no rolls here. But I will have another post up tomorrow, for heading back to Grandma's.

Once the sensors are up and running the computers calculate that you are in fact only about 30 light years from Peral and could be there is a day.

The idea of a planet that supresses magical abilities sits well with Sa'Maku. On the surface he takes some time to explore, it reminds him of the work of his ancestors - great wizards who ended all magical activity on his home world. This also means whoever created this prison is very powerful, if they feel like these people are a danger to them then they are frightening folk indeed.

"To me this is paradise, not a prison. Perhaps the Seljuk could colonize this world."

While repairs are happening the big Seljuk enjoys his time planet side and tries to find some mundane crew members to join him on a scouting mission to see if they can discover the source of the magical suppression. Perhaps it would offer another perspective than the story the planet dwellers are selling.

I don't want to detract from the main event. Don't mind doing this as an interlude or Quick Encounter or just tell me there's nothing to see here and I'll move on

Mal is curiously indifferent to the discussion of the ship's final denouement. He asks some pertinent questions about the finances, and makes a single point. "As I understand it, the original ship was still in partial mortgage. So, were we to sell this ship, we would still need to pay off the old one, and then use the remainder to gain full ownership of a smaller, leaner craft. Or, by keeping this vessel and retrieving the AI you have with this 'Grandmother', we could retain the original mortgage, but presumably take on larger-paying jobs. I am aware my brothers despise this vessel, but my own distaste is mollified by knowing it was wrested from our captors--there is a suitable glory in that. So I shall go with whatever is decided; I simply wished to bring some points of discussion up."

Kal snorts. "Hate the ship? Perhaps, only in that it carried our prison. The ship is merely a shell. A conveyance. I seethe more at the prison itself, and the will that fashioned it. Poetry is found in using the craft to bear forth my vengeance against the perpetrator. I would see the maker impaled by the hull, only after everything they have, and have built, and know, and love, is eviscerated painfully before their eyes." He pauses, then smiles slowly, his thoughts still mulling over crashing a dreadnought into a helpless and broken individual.
The dragon continues. "I digress. I despise debt. Debt implies a claim against one's free will. If it were my choice, I would arrange to be freed of whatever debts anyone has against this crew by any means necessary. Negotiating the sale of such a vessel would hopefully relieve you all of the burden of your debt. I am certain I can facilitate such a negotiation by mystic means, if the good lady @Fiona Gladbrooke would even need my assistance." He nods graciously towards the shapeshifter.

Following his brothers' lead, Zil chimes in his thoughts with a huff. "This ship reeks, and it is only by my grace that I have not rent it from beams to bolts and left it adrift in space like the trash it is. Sell it. Destroy it. Abandon it. I care not. But I will not ride in it longer than absolutely necessary."

Then, glaring at one of the unnamed crewmen leftover from the prior crew. "Besides. This one requires far too many of these annoying things to run it, and none of them true warriors or adventurers. Why surround ourselves with such ineptitude? Are we not mighty? Should we not keep only the company of the mighty? Or at least of the reasonably competent?"

She restrains an eyeroll at Zilaetherans tirade. Some youngsters are just edgelords she thinks hoping some time around "annoying things" will teach the dragonling some perspective. "I would like to have our AIs back, but I also think we're better off in a vessel more the size of the Remorseless. Something where we don't need many, if any, employees to run things. Lean and mean and doing the more hands on jobs is what I signed on for."

After some time to recoup her "energy" Fiona is game to explore the planet more and hopefully learn more on it's nullifying effects and, more importantly, more about the situation with the residents. To try and preserve her "reserves" she uses her native form on any return to the surface.

Death Otter was sitting back in the chair at the end of the conference table in what was probably a briefing room or something, where the crew...or the 'bridge crew' at least...had gathered. She had swiveled it around and leaned back enough to get her feet up on the table, and was rocking slowly, eyes on the ceiling in a way that made it seem increasingly likely that she was probably listening to music rather than everyone talking.

But then she cleared her throat and sat up straight, setting her feet on the floor with a thump.

"Yeah. We're definitely getting the AI's back. Ramson literally killed himself to make sure we could. That's happening."

She looked around and waved a hand around to indicate the ship.

"As for this...it's comfy, but most of the systems are magic fricking...garbagetech that I can't DO anything with, and our mage effed off, so...yeah. We're ditching this thing. Let someone else figure out how to shovel a quintillion peepees every hour into its gullet. I can't be bothered with that. Same thing with the humonguous crew. I can barely stand just a handful of you guys. Being in here's like being in a weird...human ant colony or something. It's upsetting. I don't like it."

She slammed her hands on the table.

"SO. Fiona, Imma need you to do your thing. Line up some buyers. Negotiate. The more you get for this thing, the bigger the pool we'll put in your cabin. Dragons, I think you guys are the closest thing to mages we have left, so I'm gonna need your help getting at least some basic repairs finished up. The better this ship works, the better the deal Fi can get for it."

Otter grinned. "You guys want your shares to be as big as they can be, right?"

Kal sits motionless, his minotaur-shaped bulk stressing the weight limit of the seat he occupies. He mulls over @Death Otter's speech, punctuating it with a barely perceptible grin. "Shrewd. And reasonable. I do not believe I need to reiterate that this leaves no question as to the proceeds being equally divisible amongst all those who remain with this crew...right?" He leans in slightly. "Meaning, us, of course. The rest of the 'ant colony' can be deposited here, there, or spaced, for all I care, having been part of a crew that was party to keeping us imprisoned for so long." He smiles and makes eye contact with the crew of the Remorseless. "You all, of course, having freed us, have at least earned your shares."
He stands up. The chair he formerly occupied groans in relief. "I look forward to this next endeavor. It shall be quite interesting working with such an assemblage of persons."
