10.B Frozen Misery

Post by Ndreare »

The life of a hunter has its good and its bad. But the worst of times are the ones where you have been betrayed. @Monza was not sure how she could have missed the signs. She is normally very sharp and on top of these things. Even looking back now she can see the signs, but somehow in the moment she overlooked them. Well hell, now she is here on this crap frozen planet and Slip escaped with the fricken ship they were sent to recover.

Slip may have claimed to be the best pilot in the Three Galaxies, but Monza had seen her defeated before and knew she could do it given a chance. But trapped on this frozen miserable giant infested planet left her with little options but to try and trek for the city that is supposed to be located only 40 kilometers from where she crashed and see about getting a ride off of here.

(Pilot) - Considered by many to be the second best pilot on Phase World Slip is a partial conversion cyborg with a purpose. Her addiction to pushing vehicles to their limit is renowned and she is known to be addicted to risk taking often getting more out of a machine than people think is possible. Unfortunately her addiction to gambling is equally well known and she has more than a few times required support from her friends to get her out of trouble. She is a Master Pilot, with extreme tech augmentations.

Instructions:
Write a story or interlude!
Try and include stuff like; how you hooked up with Slip and the retrieval mission you where on. Who did she have with her and how did you get crash landed on this rock.
Not all of these elements are needed, but trapped on the planet is a necessary. As you are finally approaching the city you will luck out and see two shuttle pods landing just outside the force field.

Take a benny as a reward.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

The Altara named Monza Lena is so used to being backstabbed, betrayed and enslaved it hardly surprises her when it happens now. After escaping the Spougorth slavers in Atlantis Monza got as far from Earth as she could.

The Thundercloud Galaxy was far. But betrayal never lingered far from her. It was while on Center that Slip and her crew had sold Monza on the idea of the Thundercloud Galaxy.

The Scramble is the mad dash to claim and colonize the thousands of worlds of the Thundercloud Galaxy. Colonists flock to the Thundercloud filled with dreams. Space Pirates and an array of cutthroats also flock to the galaxy, guns in hand, ready to rob and fleece the colonists. Lawmen and heroes are in great demand, and the opportunities for clever adventurers are said to be without limit. As the civilizations of the Anvil and Corkscrew Galaxies scramble to colonize the Thundercloud, they are beginning to realize the galaxy holds more riches, beauty, horrors and secrets than anyone has ever imagined, making it a place of discovery, adventure and treachery like no other.

All very fascinating to a newly freed slave on the run. Monza liked Slip and her almost all female crew of space pirates (Entrepreneurs and Pilots as Slip called them). There was of course, Slrrxvinslrr, the male Vernulian. Monza didn’t even start to claim she understood his power. It, was, utterly foreign to her, however Slr was a true champion and heroic of heart, it, made Monza ... glad to be friends with him. He reminded her that there could be good in the world.

Months of working exciting jobs was right up Monza’s alley. However as time went by she learned just how bad a problem Slip had with gambling. The girl owed some bad dudes a lot. Which of course led to the crew heading to this damned frozen, rotten planet to retrieve a ship, to help pay off Slip’s debt.

Then. Betrayal. Stranded. Monza and Slr. Left on the fridged planet. A 40k hike to any sort of civilization.

Shivering and mad at how things had gone Monza was not good company. At least she had clothes and EBA armor on.

Stomping across the snowy expanse Monza growled: “Remind me Slrrxvinslrr how in the damned hell we got to such a low place.”

Slur being Slur, responds with succinct sharpness, "We were stupid enough to get involved with Slip, and she had the poor judgement to end up owing /all/ the wrong people. And by all the gods we somehow actually like her in spite of her ridiculous flaws." Not more than a heartbeat goes by before he tacks on, "She probably fed us some potion or other. Want me to eat her? I'm sure I can chew around the metal bits."

Of course, this is not one of Slur's heroic moments; he's a scarred champion, flawed as anyone. He's seen too much, been through enough that it's left its mark on his psyche. There's the nightmares, bad enough that he tends to sleep away from the rest of the crew so as not to disturb anyone. Then there's the jokes about eating people. To be fair, that's a Vernulian thing; pretty much anything that doesn't eat them is on the menu, though the ones who like to mingle with polite society don't... as far as anyone knows. Rumors fly, naturally. And Slur has an amazing cutlery set.

Himself, Slur came to know Slip on another one of her 'We need to pay some debts' runs. He wasn't interested in the money, mind you. His order is one of those White Knight types; run about the Three Galaxies helping people, beating up bad guys and protecting the innocent. There was a certain Kreeghor that wasn't being very discrete with the people he kidnapped and sold into slavery. Slip's crew was after the bounty and a particular slave. Slur was just after the Kreeghor. When the big showdown came, Slur's heroism nearly cost him his own life, but saved a lot of others; his salvation came from the crew, and his loyalty to them hasn't wavered since.

Monza, being part of that crew now, has gotten to experience that loyalty first hand.

Monza laughed.

“I’ll join you, we can roast her with our opinions and then pick around the metal bits. Gah. What a dumb woman. I told her we were cutting it too close - those Kreeghor fighter ships had to have seen us. We should have skipped around some then landed. But. Nooo. In rush Slip always seems. Well. I’m glad she got away and with the other ship too. She did it. It only cost her two crew members. I’m done working for her. .... probably. Damn this snow! It messes with my ability to sense where I’m going. 40k to a city. Grrrrrrrr.”

Monza pulled a large black armored box, the size of a coffin, behind her through the snow. The snow made it easier to drag but the snow storm also played havoc with her radar sense. Over the last few kilometers grayish fuzzy monkey like alien creatures had poked up out of rocks and chattered and hopped around the two of them as they trekked closer to the city. Always chittering. One by one a total of six little alien things had jumped up onto the box to enjoy a free “sleigh ride”.

Slur knew the armored box must have been heavy. Monza liked to blow things up. The box had a fortune of explosives in it, and now six aliens on it.

Monza stopped walking, set the box down and then in a flash, spun around slashing the magic blade she carried just inches over the heads of the alien free riders and had the sword re-sheathed in a blink of an eye.

The chitterlings stopped. Other than the wind is was silent for all of 5 or 6 seconds. Then the ruckus exploded as the aliens clapped, hooting and cheering loudly. They’d found it funny. Monza groaned and then sat on the edge of the box rubbing her head with her hands. She’d obviously been hoping to scare off the buggers.

”You should just eat one of these heavy ass fluff balls Slur.”

Standing the Altara Warrior Woman stretched then turn to face the fuzzy things. This time they screamed and ran away into the snow when Monza seemed to vomit octopus-like tendrils out of her mouth. Slur had seen Monza use the bio-wizard parasite before to fly spaceships or hack computers and such. As Monza slurped the organism back into her body her mood seemed better.

Grabbing up the box she said: ”That’s better. Let’s go Slur. The sooner we get to that city the sooner we can get off this frozen rock and get a strong drink and warm food... you’re starting to look yummy to me at this point.”

Smiling at Slur the Warrior Woman chuckles.

Slrrxvinslrr can assume she’s kidding as he knows Monza Lena is vegetarian. Or claimed to be.

Slur had been watching the show, and only regrets he did not bring snacks to enjoy through the viewing. They were amusing little creatures; they cheered, they squealed and ran like cowards. Heck, they started the whole thing by trolling Monza. What's not to be amused at?

"Maybe I'll try some on a stick if they have them in town; better to try local dishes made by locals, you know." Slur answers back. "Too much fur to deal with out here. It tickles my throat and I hate it."

He starts to slither along again when she suggests they be on their way. "Are you sure? We could wait to see if one comes back. I think the one with the middling shade took to you. Might be a pet if you let it." The aim is to make her squeal, should she deign to give him the satisfaction of it. But then, she's a hardened Altaran warrior woman. She's above such petty things, right?

"You wouldn't want me at any rate. I'm all gristle, you see, and you've no frying oil to make a nice crackling rind from the skin, which is probably about the only thing worth much for eating."

Monza looks at her friend Slur and shakes her head.

“I’ll eat you on principle. Well. No. I won’t. A pack. We never eat each other but we eat the world. Damn. I must be dehydrated.”

Trudging on she heads for the town ahead.

"Mmyyessss, there's the rub..." Slur replies with no small amount of smugness in his tone, and he likewise focuses on heading toward the town.

Along the way, though without losing himself entirely to thought, he recalls the times they've had together. While paying off Slip's debts isn't anyone's idea of a good time, it's been something that binds them all in camaraderie, and that's something he's definitely glad for.
