01.00 - Sweat Lodge

Post by Greywolf » Sun Nov 11, 2018 10:41 am

Welcome to East Texas University. Now that you’ve settled into your dorm, it’s time to get your bearings. At ETU they call Freshman orientation the Sweat Lodge. Your dorm Resident Assistant spouted some stuff about how the Native American sweat lodges were considered places of rebirth that provided important revelations. At least the letter said there’d be food and music. You’d say this building has seen better days, but in this case probably not. The Ravens Roost Multi-use Indoor Arena—the basketball arena— is an ugly, gray, windowless, round building, like a giant WWII pillbox without the firing slits. Despite some creative decorating inside the arena, the building still shows its age. From peeling paint to vacant fire extinguisher racks to struggling air conditioning, it’s no wonder the campus tour guide skipped this building.

You join the throng of Freshman students filing into the arena and take an unoccupied seat. Looking around, the room is gradually filling up. Surprisingly most of the students seem quite presentable, but then you remember this is their first day, and some of them were probably dressed by their mothers to make a good impression.

At one end of the basketball court a small raised dais has been erected. With half a dozen chairs and a microphone stand on it. To either side of the dais stand the Raven's cheerleaders in their black red and white uniforms. Most are doing a good job of looking enthusiastic, but here and there you catch the bored expressions of those who could clearly thing of better ways to spend their Saturday evenings.

Once the hall is pretty much filled half a dozen faculty members, led by President Nelson mount the dais. He moves up to the microphone, whilst the others take seats. He cough's pointedly into the microphone causing whistling feedback, during which he signals frantically to someone up in the overhead score booth to turn it down.

"Good Evening. . ."

"Settle down now please"

"Good evening one and all, My name is James Nelson, President of East Texas University. May I take this opportunity to welcome you all to your Freshman year at ETU, and express what a pleasure it is to see so many of you joining us here tonight." The grandfatherly man at the microphone beams down at his audience as they quieten down before continuing.

"I remember what it was like to be a Freshman, oh so many years ago. More years ago than any of you have been alive, probably more years ago than you can even imagine. I do still remember the sense of excitement, of wonder, even the tiniest bit of anxiety as a arrived at college at the start of my studies. . ." He then continues in this vein for some time, interspersing his reminiscences, with useful information.

"Remember, if you bring a vehicle on campus you need to apply for a permit from the administration building. That permit will allow you to park in certain designated areas. Failure to park in those areas will result in. . ." Yeah, yeah, all this is in the orientation pack you were given.

". . . of course such incidents are rare. We place the utmost importance on the safety of our students. Should you have any concerns on that score then I urge you to contact the campus security team, based in the Linda Kirchman. . ."

As her dad finished setting up her laptop and music system and she managed to arrange a painting corner with her sculpture supplies in a mess on a large natural wood table by the window, she started stacking the shelves with painting, drawing and mythology books, art reproductions and various others.
" oh shoot munchink' look at the time. You best get to your meeting now. Come, give your old man a big big hug." the big guy's eyes watered as she stretched up on her tippy toes and circled his neck with both arms.
"ah.....daddy loves you very much princess"..........." don't you forget it now"
They walked out and she watched him get in his cab to take the train back home.
sigh.......oh now, let's go she said to herself steeling herself and slowing her breathing. She wiped her eyes with her sleeve and made her way to the Sweatlodge.
When she stepped in the room was full and smelled of stale sweat and bodies, her nose scrunched up.
She found a reclusive seat in the back and got out her sketch pad, charcoal, and pencils and started to absentmindedly sketch. It always helped center her and she already missed her dad.

Rob was frustratingly uninformative about this Sweat Lodge.
Rob the roommate wrote:"I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise"
Muttering vows of unlikely vengeance, Dan made his way to the arena. It wasn't that hard to find, he'd passed the ugly building on the way to the weight room.

Once their he scanned the room, looking for food and/or drinks. Not going to be any beer, but a Dew'd set me up nice. Looking around at the crowd, he was reminded of the sight of fresh meat landing in theater. Young, looking around a lot, some nervous, some trying to act nonchalant. And what about you boy. You ain't never been to college neither.

He does see a few other older looking students, he suppose they might be other veterans. As he drifted closer to a group, they didn't really have that ... military look. Hmph. Probably zoomies. He kept moving, looking for something cold to drink.

Renata came real close to just skipping the 'sweat lodge.' The whole thing just stank of things she had very little patience for. Pomposity and 'school spirit' and that kind of weird, unthinking ironic racism that seemed to drape around the Midwest's neck like a scarf. Did no one find it in the least fucked up that a school full of nearly all white kids, who's ancestors had genocided and dispossessed the old native population, was now claiming the culture of that same native population? Jesus wept.

Besides, everyone knew that the important information was in the orientation package anyway.

In the end though, she went, along with all the others. It just felt too wrong not to. Like she'd not really be a student here unless she did.

Even so, she brought her sunglasses and picked a seat way back at the back row. There she could sit up, put on her sunglasses and close her eyes, imagining herself to be...well...anywhere else really.

No rush on that though. Renata took some time to look around during the awkward speech, scoping the other students out and taking the measure of the room.

Jeez. You'd think with all the alum cash getting shoveled into this place, they could afford a little renovation.

Round 0

Eugene made his way into the Raven’s Roost and the basketball court. Yeah, this wasn’t somewhere he would normally be. He moved with the throng of freshmen. There was pizza and sodas, so he grabbed a couple slices of pepperoni and a root beer before heading to the stands. He found himself moving up to the higher seats in the bleachers and sitting next to a pretty blonde girl with a sketchbook.

Eugene tried not to stare. There were a lot of pretty girls here. He wondered if he should say something, like, introduce himself. Instead, he chickened out and pulled out the Brandon Sanderson novel he was reading, munching on his pizza.

But then some jostling for position on the bleachers sent him bumping against the girl.

“Oh! I’m...I’m sorry. I hope I didn’t ruin what you were drawing,” Eugene said sheepishly.

David walked in with the throng of other freshman. David stayed off to the left and as soon as he was in the door, he took the first available seat. Sitting down, David was crunched in between a frail looking individual who was sweating profusely and very large individual who had a stack of 5 slices on pizza on a plate.
The heavy set person turns and extends his hand
Hello, I'm Bart, Mathmatics major.
He extended his hand just as he let out a burp that smelled like sardines.
Maybe taking the first available seat wasn't such a good idea after all. I hope this doesn't take too long, I need a shower just from sitting here.
Wow, I didn't know he was here." Lame excuse but, those two stunk.
David got up and headed up further into the bleachers. A few people were bumping into others to get a spot, I however just slipped between two people and sat down next to someone.
Hey, how have you been?" David holds out his hand next to the person he sat next to but, suddenly realizes he is more interested in the girl with the sketch pad. So much for that failed ruse

Pip thought about skipping the sweat lodge but decided to play nice

The rundown interior was underwhelming along with the slightly (very) bored cheerleaders. The seats were pretty full but she managed to get sat near some slightly less smelly fresh(ha!)men.
Glancing around the expectant faces she spotted someone with dark glasses on, good move, must remember.
When the guy started speaking she listened attentively for about ten minutes then her attention began to drift. She started recording the speechifying on her phone in case promises were made that in future were left undelivered.

The bump made Zoe drop her sketchpad "oh...." she sounded and she dipped to retrieve it from the dirty boards under their seats. As she reached to it so did the boy that bumped into her and they almost clunked heads. She recoiled from the sudden proximity giving space for the guy to pick up and hand back her pad.
"T....Thanks...."she muttered under her breath "its nothing important....umm" she said clutching the pad to her chest, more for her own protection and coverage than to hide what she was drawing. It was just a funny caricature of the guy giving the speech.
Seeing the boy's friendly face and warm smile, a smile washed over her face, disappearing as fast as it appeared when her eyes darted over the boy....guy....man....dude? standing next to him. She blushed and hid her face in her locks, getting back to her sketching.
"....Legion......i like legion" she muttered, her voice a whisper, not lifting her eyes from her pad.

I assume my roll of 5 is still valid
Spotting the Class I supplies at last, Dan zigged over to the table and secured himself pizza, pepperoni, 2 slices ea. and Dew, Mountain, 1 can ea.

Mostly so far he'd seen homogenous group; a bunch of beefy types who screamed athletes, a cluster of girls with big hair and perfect noses, a cluster of slightly familiar faces who Dan suspected were local kids he hadn't seen in four years, and so on.

Finally Dan spotted a disparate group, looking slightly like the cast of the next WB teen drama; chubby kid with a book, cute little blond hiding behind a big notepad, another futzing around with a basefall like he was hoping a game was about to break out. Nerd, brainy girl, and jock. All they need is a cheerleader and a delinquint and they are set. he thinks as he drifts over. Crap, that makes me the delinquint. Watching the song and dance with the sketch pad, he had to give props to the nerdy kid for trying. He finds a place to hold up a wall and starts to chow down.

The first school assembly and Jason didn't really know what to expect. However, having walked in on his roommate Ben half naked with an older woman that turned out to be his mom getting him changed into more comfortable clothes after registration was probably the strangest thing he would encounter at the school. For today's outing he decided to wear his black Spider-Man tee, because the who Peter Parker being a student thing. It was a stretch for a theme but he works with what he's got.

Ben had left earlier to meet up with a friend to find seats together. He'd offered to save one for him but he declined. He preferred hanging out with the outcasts in the back row. Opening the door to the complex and stepping inside immediately made him think Bond Villain Lair, but the only Oddjob here was the peeling paint on the walls. It could definitely use a touch up or twelve.

“Settle down now please,” blared out of the room's speakers. Jason thought to himself, “How about no, you crazy Dutch bast…” His thought trailed off as he caught a savory aroma. “Is that pizza?!” he asked mostly to himself. He smelled again, “Yes it most certainly is. Excellent.“ He put is fingertips together doing his best Montgomery Burns impression. He gleefully hopped over to where pizza boxes – now mostly empty – were stacked and grab a couple of slices on a paper plate and snatched up a Dr. Pepper before plopping down in a back corner seat. He noticed Ben several rows up waving at him and he raise a slice of pizza up and nodded in recognition. Now to enjoy his meal and come up with mostly internal MST3K comments to accompany the day's speeches.

Game Info
Those of you who made the notice roll (Daniel, Philipa, Eugene, Renata & David)

Across on the far side of the hall you see one of the school administrators arguing with a couple of the janitorial staff. You're too far away to hear any details but she is clearly quite agitated, pointing to animatedly at a couple of bits of graffiti on the gym wall. Clearly she's not happy about vandalism so early in the school year.
Finally, Nelson seems to be wrapping up.
“In conclusion, your time here at ETU has the potential to be among the best days of your life. Don’t just survive college, but make the most of your opportunities here. Now, before we break into our Senior-led groups, let’s all practice the ETU Ravens fight song!”

The fight song words are flashed on a giant video screen behind the president, and slowly encouraged by the suddenly animated cheerleaders, the crowd picks up the tune.
Ravens Fiiiiight
Ravens Fiiiiight
Put on the black and whiiiite
Ravens Fiiiiight
Ravens Fiiiiight
Our team will own the niiiight.
Fear the Fightin’ Ravens,
Our mighty team does soooooar.
Fear the Fightin’ Ravens,
When we make another scoooore.
OOC Comments
Bonus Benny for the best (audio) version of the fight song posted to the hangout.
With the conclusion of the fight song, President Nelson announces "Go Ravens!" , over the whoops and shouts of the cheerleaders.

Now, for the part you’ve been waiting for. While the band and food folks set up here on the gym floor, you’ll break up into groups for a final, time-honored Sweat Lodge tradition. You’ll be meeting away from the eyes and ears of faculty with a Senior who will pass along the best advice from four years of life here at ETU. Or in some cases five or six years. Now, on the bottom of each of your chairs is taped a location here in the building where you’ll meet with your Senior. By the time you’re done we’ll have more food and music ready to go, so let’s get moving!"

Checking beneath your seat, you each note the number taped to the underside, room 12, and you're soon clustered around the board displaying a plan of the arena. The rooms on the map are marked with number to match the numbers on the seats. Room 12 seems to be a basement meeting room, under the bleachers.

Renata reached under her chair for the note, and it was good to have something to distract herself with after the torture of the...'fight song.' This was supposed to be college for Christ's sake. Weren't they supposed to be putting away their childish things or however that went?

She kept her sunglasses on as she went to the big map with the room numbers on it. Several other kids were nattering on about guns and whatnot as they went off in the direction she needed to...as if any of them had ever held a gun in their lives. There wasn't much to do besides follow and hope they were in some other room.

But of course they weren't.

At 'room 12,' Renata poked her head into the door after the others ahead of her went in. She had her black 'like a bitch' T-shirt on, and somewhat baggy blue jeans that showed off a waistline honed by an athletic high school career. Her hazel-green eyes were hidden behind her sunglasses' round lenses, her hair done in a really short black 'pixie' type cut, only a little messier. She was taller and heavier than the blonde girl with the sketchbook, but smaller than most of the guys.

With a mute nod of acknowledgement, she went in and took a seat. It seemed pretty clear this was going to be a thing where some senior either had a peppy 'you can do it' story, or maybe some spoopy hazing type story. Then they'd have all gone through the ring of fire and passed the initiation and yay they could go back and finish unpacking and maybe squeeze an hour for video games before it was time for bed.

As you head down the hallway to room 12, you pass a security guard heading into a room labeled "Physical Engineering Control. Private"
OOC Comments
Those who made their notice roll (so most of you, basic 4 required) will catch a glimpse of a large number of fire extinguishers in the room before he closes the door behind him.
You find room 12 without any difficulty and file inside. The room is fairly non-descript. There is a large table, cheap pine by the look of it with ten chairs around it. At the far end of the table is a large white projection screen, and mounted in the ceiling is a small projector. The chairs are functional, but actually quite comfortable.

There is as yet no sign of your Sweat Lodge "mentor".

Eugene smiled. “Yeah? It’s good? Well, of course it’s good. It’s Sanderson. I haven’t read Legion yet. Been focusing on his Cosmere stuff. But I--”

Eugene blinked as some jock came and sat right between him and the cute blonde with the sketchpad.

“Hey, how have you been?" the young man held out his hand.

Eugene tentatively took the hand of the jock.. “Fine…” he said. “Lots of new stuff to get used to. I’m Eugene,” he introduced himself.

Eugene returned his attention to the president’s speech, but it was all rather...boring. His gaze drifted to the cheerleaders in their short skirts and midriff tops. But then a bit of commotion caught his attention. One of the administrators was arguing with a janitor. She seemed pissed and gesturing to some graffiti on the wall.

And then music swelled and suddenly cheerleaders were...bouncing...up...and down… Damn…

Eugene was pulled to his feet with the surge of the rest of the freshmen. He mumbled along to the words of a fight song he didn’t know yet. “Go Ravens!” he yelled with the rest.

Eugene fished out the number from under his seat. Room 12. He glanced over and saw that the blonde girl was also going there.

“Hey, I think we’re in the same group,” Eugene told her with a smile as they made their way to the board that told where each room was. Eugene used his bulk to try and shield the blonde a little from the crowd. “We’re in the basement, it looks like, under the bleachers.”

They got separated a bit, and Eugene saw her get jostled. He pushed his way back through the crowd. “Sorry,” he murmured an apology before returning to shielding her as they headed down the stairs.

As they headed to Room 12, some guys around them were talking about shooting people and beating them with baseball bats? Was that something he should report to someone? Eugene looked around him nervously and moved a bit protectively closer to the blonde girl.

Eugene saw a security guard head into a nearby maintenance room with a lot of fire extinguishers inside. As they entered Room 12, Eugene noted Renata was part of his group. He smiled and waved at the girl he’d met from his dorm.

Inside the room, Eugene pulled a chair out for the blonde girl before finding his own seat. He didn’t see the senior they were supposed to meet with, so he looked around the table, unsure what to say to this group of strangers.

Pip is 5’5”, wt 140 lb, average build but def not muscular, tends to wear unsmart casual clothes.
Wears glasses, can be a bit cold which is her trying not to be nervous.

Ok look under seat, ah number 12, the crush down to the board which shows the room position ease a little and Pip finds herself heading for room 12, in the basement.
After stopping the recording she has a final look around the hall. Something could be done to brighten this place if they gave a f**k.

She was looking forward to the pizza

Off downstairs and the people she was tagging along with didn’t look so bad now she was a bit closer. Of course they would be judging her too and as she said this she gave an involuntary shudder.

Reaching the room there was no sign of the person who was going to talk so she sat down near the door.

She noticed the really big guy looking around and, plucking up courage, decided to try communicating.
Hi, my name’s Pip, I’m from Florida. Its a bit daunting at the start. How’s it going with you

After more people sat down, David decided he might as well get to know people and make this as friendly as possible before who knows what starts.

David was sitting on the far side of the table form the door, he was wearing a Norfolk Tides baseball shirt, Jeans, Sneakers and a watch on his left wrist. He was tossing a ball as he spoke. He looks like a little older than his 18 years, with a growing beard and mustache. He about 5'10" when standing with black hair and Browns eyes. He has an athletic build and a friendly smile.

"Hey, I'm David. I'm an Anthropology Major with Chemistry as my Minor. I was thinking of going into Crime Scene Forensics. Yeah, like a bunch of people I watch CSI, NCIS and all those other shows where the scientist solves the case. I'm not thinking that, I'm more interested in helping and I know I won't be the hero.

Wasn't sure where I was going to go for College as cost was an issue but, suddenly I met a rep from this school and I got in on a Baseball Scholarship. Weird as I am not a star player. So, how did all of you end up here and did any of you notice all those Fire Extinguishers in the room? That is weird."

Pip. That was kind of an adorable name. Sounded English...the kind of thing you could say in connection with 'tea and scones.' And then there was the blonde girl who was adorably tiny. There'd been girls bigger than her in Renata's old middle school classes.

Ugh. Too much adorable. She shifted her attention to the projector in the ceiling. Their senior 'guide' or whatever hadn't showed yet, but there should be some kind of remote control for this thing yeah? Maybe they could get a sneak preview of the vacation slide show. A quick scan of the table didn't reveal anything obvious, so Renata got up and started poking around the room, hunting for the control mechanism for the projector while the other kids got to know each other.

And was anyone going to talk about the fire extinguishers in that engineering room? What did they run these buildings on, kerosene?

She paused just a second when David spoke up, experiencing a flash of irritation that was pure jealousy. That sounded like an awesome major that she was in no way able to pursue. Meh.

"Old building," Renata said shortly from where she was rummaging around for the remote. "Probably the only way to get it up to code."

Jason shrugged at the realization that the group beat their “mentor" to the room, great first impression there. He took a seat, sitting diagonally so that his arm rested on the back of the chair casually. He listened to the introduction while watching the others file into the room. Looking up at the projector, he decided to speak up.

“Have any of you ever seen IT? Nevermind, I'm Jason, Computer Science and Creative Writing. I was bored and the ‘rents wanted me out of the house. This was honestly the first college that showed up in ny search, so here I am.” He leaned back in his seat, scanning the other's expressions to try to get a feel for the room.

Zoe took the chair so kindly offered.
When Daniel finished she took a deep breath and put her pad on the table.
" Hei guys..." she said, her voice quiet at first but getting louder "I'm Zoe" she finished the comic crescendo. She gave a small cough clearing her throat
....." sorry...... I'm an art major" she said with an awkward little chuckle lifting up her pad in a sort of added visual clarification.
"Came from Montana with my Da.....took us 2 days from the house" she said while digging in her postman bag for her pencils....her voice trailing off as she turned around to do this.
Feeling a bit out of place after talking so much in front of so many strangers she started sketching.
She looked up at the boy sitting in front of her and started drawing a loose smile on her lips ... that didn't quite reach her eyes.....more like a grimace of concentration (one of the many faces she pulled while drawing).
Everyone seems so nice and friendly.....Eugene is so cool...........and this guy.....'stan......what does he mean.....he seems military I think, like army, posture, speech, the words he used in the corridor seemed professional in a way.....Afganistan?!........no...
A frown creased her brow as her pen moved quicker and in rushed movements.
.......old building but did they have a lot of fires?......

Jason cocked his head as he turned and rested his elbows on the table and asked the girl, "Do you do any fantasy art?" He then realized she was was drawing and he probably broke her concentration. Too late now, this train has already left the tracks. "Maybe we could collaborate on something, I'm a bit of a writer." With that, he decided he had disturbed her enough and leaned back in his chair. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his trusty 20-sided die and manipulated it in his fingers.

Dan pays attention to each person as they introduce themselves, trying to attach names to faces, a habit he'd picked up writing for the Times.

Pip. Florida. Doesn't say much. Looks bookish; that's cool.
Dave. Baller. Pays attention

"Yeah, that was weird. I noticed some of the holders were empty topside. Maybe that's where they store them to be loaded?"

Jason. Nerd, but confident. Jason reminded Dan of some intel guys he met, their brains were always eight steps ahead of everyone else; they talk a mile a minute. And a gamer, could be fun to get back into that. He wondered if he still had his Weird War on Terror homebrew notes.

Zoe. Montana. Only two things .. pay attention, boy. Art. Dan figured there was more going on behind those baby blues that most people suspected. Zoe reminded him of some of those other intel types, the quiet ones who'd sit in the corner watching every damn thing. Yeah, like you don't do the same thing boy?

He glances speculativly at the last two, the slightly chubby kid putting the moves on Zoe, and the girl futzing with the projector

Jason smiled up at the girl. "Oh yeah? Bet you have some pretty great stuff in there. I'll see about getting some of my," he paused a slight moment, "less dark works together for you."

He abruprly changed his gaze to to look at one of the corners of the room. He seemed to squint as if he was trying to comprehend something. "So how long are we supposed to wait here?" As abruptly as before, he starts looking about the room like everyone else.

What others don't know
Jason sees his Granny Eu in the corner of the room. She never speaks, but moves her lips nonetheless. Jason has no idea what she's trying to say and moves on. He's getting used to it.

Round 0
Eugene is six feet, north of 200 lbs. While overweight, he carries it pretty well, with a big build, but he is in no sense athletic. Usually wears t-shirts, jeans, and tennis shoes.

“Hi, my name’s Pip, I’m from Florida. It's a bit daunting at the start. How’s it going with you?”

Eugene looked over to the girl and gave a smile. “Oh, hi. I’m, uh, Eugene,” he said. “From Iowa. It’s going pretty well. This is all a lot of new to take in,” he admitted. “And, well, first time away from home that wasn’t summer camp.”

Eugene looked at the others as they started introducing themselves too. “I’m here as a history and archaeology major.”

He glanced over at what Zoe was drawing and Renata poking around the room. What was she looking for?

David sat there listening to the others tell their cliff note bios.

"This is turning into an interesting adventure. I always liked when some new kid came to school. Usually they were a military brat and their parent just got transferred into the area. It was a fun time meeting someone new, learning new and interesting things. Since we were all put here together, we should all meet once a week and share our experiences, love this little adventure together. Might be interesting. "]

"Adventure?"

Renata looked over at David. She was one of the only ones who hadn't told any cliff notes about herself.

"Dude, we're sitting in a room, waiting for some...tour guide or whatever, who's late. If this is your definition of adventure, you have led a very sheltered life."

She gave up on the search with a disgusted shake of her head.

"Well, the remote's missing unless one of you guys can find it, so we can't turn the slides on and look at them while we wait, so that kind of sucks. He must've taken it with him when he left."

With a glance at her phone, Renata added, "I'm giving it another five minutes, then I'm outta here. Someone might want to check the bathrooms on the way out, just to make sure they didn't pass out or something."

This waiting is taking the shine off.
I wish I could draw”
, indicating Zoe, ”I am taking ancient history as a minor, What’s your favorite historical era?”

Hearing Daniel’s comment,
”Doesn’t smell like a psych test”

Looks around the room, then at door, ”I guess we had better go report back that we were missing a mentor”
Walks over to the doorway and begins to walk back to hall, intending to look at the room with fire extinguishers as she passes. Looks at hands, all good.

David smiles at the outburst. Yes, an adventure. Not every part of an adventure is exciting, dangerous or adrenaline pumping. This is a brand new experience, much different then my time with the Virgina Beach Volunteer Recue Squad. Adventures start out in many different ways and you make them what you will. Me, I will make the best of this. I may come out with a life changing experience, maybe new best friends, maybe a wife. I may come out a broke failure, I may leave with no friends and everyone hating me but, yes it is an adventure and I plan on making it the most exciting one so far in my life.
I apologize if your definition is different and I will remember that in the future if I see you after this session.

Just as Eugene and Pip were about to head back to the main hall in search of assistance a newcomer arrives in the room. His tall skinny frame, wrapped in a faded Radiohead t-shirt and blue jeans, is surmounted by a freckled and bespectacled face framed with a mop of red hair.

"I don't think you should be playing with the projector", his voice cracks as he clears his throat. "They take a dim view of interfering with campus equipment. If they think you've broken something you'll end up having to pay for it".

He picks up a chair and turns it around before straddling it to address the room.

"So, my name's Robby, Robby Niles. Senior, majoring in engineering with a specialism in fluid mechanics and dam construction. Guess I'm supposed to give you the inside track on how to survive here at ETU".

He draws himself up a little, as he tries (not terribly successfully) to appear the worldly wise mentor to the young neophytes.

"Be a zebra.", he pauses waiting for that nugget of wisdom to sink in.

"Haven’t you ever watched the animal shows on TV? Zebras survive because they blend in and don’t draw attention to themselves. They stick close together, because the lions pick off the ones who stray too far from the herd. Individuality is over-rated! If you want to survive at ETU, you’d better learn to think like a zebra."

David looks over at Renata and with a friendly smile,

"Triceratops? I'm guessing the top two horns are your very dangerous icy stare and the third horn is how you will verbally put them in their place?"

David then turns back to Robby.

So what did you do? Did you stick with your own social group or did you pick friends from different areas and just blend in with everyone? Personally, I like having many friends from all different areas, makes life much more interesting.

Eugene smiled as Pip asked him what his favorite era was. “Classical and Medieval period,” he said. “I also enjoy biblical archaeology. It’s a nice mash up of various cultures.”

Eugene didn’t mind waiting. He pulled out his Brandon Sanderson novel. He didn’t get a chance to crack it, though, as their senior mentor walked in and told them to be zebras. Eugene blinked, wondering what he meant. The others seemed skeptical, but Eugene could see the point.

“The mole that sticks his head up gets whacked,” Eugene said. He paused. “Okay, that sounded like a fortune cookie.”

"Be a Zebra is universally applicable to every situation you might find yourself in. It's brief, succinct and gets right down to the heart of the matter. Oh sure I could roll out platitudes, like work hard, take regular breaks to blow off steam, be careful with your money, don't wander around the campus alon after dark, but on the whole those are self evident, and to some degree covered by Be a Zebra"
"If you don't work you'll be called in for consultations, you'll have been noticed. Not a Zebra.
If you keep solely to yourself, or work too hard other students will thin you're wierd. Not a Zebra.
If you blow all your cash, you'll be looking for top-ups from the hardship fund, you'll be registered. Not a Zebra.
If you're wandering campus alone, then you've no herd to protect you. Not a Zebra!"

"See, I told you it was all you need to know".

"For fuck's sake," Renata groans. "We're people, okay? People. Enough with the...lion and zebra and mole shit."

With a glance at Robby, she went on. "You do you. I've got no complaints about that. But don't stand here and try to make it sound like you've got the keys to the only car that's going anywhere, because that's bullshit. First, the whole 'be a zebra' thing, as you're saying it, sounds like a lazy-ass cop-out excuse for not giving actual useful advice. You say something that can literally mean anything, 'be a zebra,' and then say actually it means 'everything.' Which means it's basically worthless."

"And second, I spent most of my life, til now, keeping my head down and...it's just lying, okay? Lying to everyone else about who you are. Lying to yourself too. You might think it's awesome now how you can fool everyone, but sooner or later it will catch up to you. Maybe someone you thought was into you will suddenly realize you're not who they thought you were and walk out. Maybe you'll be forty-five and realize the reason you're so miserable in spite of having everything you thought you wanted is because you spent every minute just surviving, and never actually living. Whatever."

"Point is...I'm done. If that's all you've got, sounds like we can go."

She scrubbed her right hand through her hair and turned to head back out.

"What you are describing though is being a zombie. No thanks to that! No offense." He then flicks his d20 die into the air and snatches it on it's way down.

Zoe was quietly listening to the conversation while doodling. Before the "mentor" came in she was fixated of Daniel...She started absentmindedly drawing him. His tanned complexion and inquisitive gaze reminded her of a faun for some reason. In quick practiced lines she sketched his face, shoulders, and arms, continuing with goats legs poking out of his shirt...and horns, cute big curly horns, she drew on biting her lip, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She caressed the hard scratchy drawing paper with her fingers to make shadows and switched to a thinner pencil for details.
As the "mentor" walked in she barely noticed the lanky boy.

She listened to what he was trying to say bitting her lip. zebra......ze..bra.....hmmmm. how about if he was half zebra half human like a centaur, but a zebraur.....zebran, zebman, zebster, antilope, antiloupe, maniloupe....zebraloupe....Marty....hehehe she chuckled to herself and without thinking she started doodling a zebra body and Robbie's torso, his shaggy hair, his annoyed expression while listening to her colleagues interact and interject.
As Daniel started talking again she moved to the sketch of him and instead of giving her "pan" a flute she gave him a big anime style AK 47

she lifted her gaze from her pad as she found a space in the conversation and steadying her voice she interjected "ummm, guys, I think humans are more meant to live in small communities where free collaboration was the norm in order to survive. We, as a society, are meant to work together, gaze shifted towards Daniel, as a smile fluttered on her face as she spoke to hunt and feed our community"...her stomach grumbled and she remembered she forgot to eat again. She was famished.

"I guess that if we work together we will be just peachy, don't you" she lifted her gaze to Robbie and gave him the biggest smile she could muster. " and also......why so many fire extinguishers, Marty" she said half chuckling and throwing Jason and tongue out half-wink.

We grew opposable thumbs to build tools, use those tools and build doors with knobs we can turn. We can turn them Marty! He sat back in his seat, taking his normal demeanor. "So you see, it is insulting to compare us to herd animals, because we are so much more. Thank you." He ends his speech by bowing his head to each person, repeating "Thank you" with each bow.

Daniel, David & Eugene
You hear a crashing sound out in the hallway. You guess Jason is too busy being impressed with his own wittiness to notice, and the girls seem intent on geting answers from Robby.
To Pip, (and anyone else still grilling Robby)
"I meant what I said about not wandering the campus alone at night. It's really not safe", he looks at you glancing at the others to see if they are listening.
"Something isn't right here on the campus, there's been students go missing. Always in the dark. . . Always on their own. . . Nobody knows whathappens to them, they just disappear. Spirited away by some creature, or worse. Talk is that the campus is haunted a malevolent spirit of some kind. The wilder theories even give it a name. The Needler!"
"I guess you can think what you like of me, it's not like I have to care about any of you. But you ignore my advice at your own peril. Stick your head over the parapet and some archer will have your eye out. Play the odds and likely you'll stay safe. Go looking for it and I have no doubt it'll find you".

He glares at Renata briefly, clearly focusing on the confident young woman as the source of his problems.
"You may as well wait here, they're not going to be ready for you for another ten minutes or so, we were told the band starting to play was the signal too send you all back to the hall".

That'd be responsibility of the custodial staff."

Even I know there's no such thing, well except school spirit which there seems to be a lot of upstairs, and maybe a little Teen Spiritfrom the newbies." He looked back at the mentoring student. "Have there been any other explanations? What does security, and even better, the police think about it?" He brings his gaze back to the group.

I get a bit closer to Robby
” I get the not going alone in dark places, how many people are we talking about?
Assuming this isn’t just something to scare the newbies” I smile.

I take his warning with a pinch of salt but will remember to check if other people are singing from that hymn sheet.

”Are there any other things to be wary of”
Might as well let Robby do his stuff, after all its good to have contacts

Renata paused when the senior called back at her, then turned around just in time to see Zoe looking at her. Her mouth quirked in a little half-smile of amusement at her joke, and almost against her will she started coming back over...dragged as if that eye contact were tractor beams in that show her little brother liked so much.

"Come on, man," she said to Robby. "If students were missing it'd be a big deal. On the news."

Renata gave Zoe a grin. "As for the name, I guess they figured 'Acupuncturer' wasn't scary enough. Sounds like a freshman hazing to me."

David was sitting there listening not so intently. He was just catching the ball when out in the hall he heard a crashing sound. Not sure exactly what that was, he stands up and heads for the door. At the same time, Daniel jumps up and is also moving towards the door and opens it a crack. As Daniel peers out into the hall, David asks:
"So you heard it also, do you see anything out in the hall? He awaits his answer and gets ready to head out into the hall to see what has happened.

Eugene chuckled at Zoe’s and Jason’s antics. It was true. He looked up a bit, though, as he heard a crashing sound out in the hallway, but then Robby was talking to him again.

“Um, archaeology and history,” he answered. “So, no, not engineering. What about for the gen eds?” He was distracted from the crash outside.

He must have missed something, because -- what was a needler? “What, what? Students missing?”

He looked over at Daniel and David checking the hall. Oh, right. The crash. “It sounded like someone dropped a tray or something?”

"Did you have anything to do with this?", the security guard asks suspiciously.
"Did you see anything unusual down here, anyone who didn't belong, or who might have broken this camera?"

The guard is campus security, you've seen a couple of their uniforms on campus already. They're based over in one of the dorm houses if you remember rightly. You're sure it was in the orientation pack. The name on his badge says "T. August"

"Just seems to be the camera. A bit random for casual vandalism if you ask me. Still it doesn't look new. Guess this means I'd best try and find out who it belongs to. Well if you're sure nobody saw anything, then you can get on with whatever it was you were doing."

The guard turns and leaves, heading up the stairs at the end of the corridor.

At that point there is a rumble of bass and a kick drum reverberating through the ceiling from the floor above.

"Thank goodness for that", says Robby. "I know I agreed to do this, but I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition. . .", he pauses briefly to see if anyone reacts to the reference.

Robby looks at Pip. "Sounds like the band are getting started. They always try and put on a good show for the start of the year. We should probably head back upstairs now."

He gets up, precisely placing his chair back under the desk, and starts for the door.

Jason chuckled and lowered his head, "No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition..."

He gets up and pushes his chair back in place before following the others out to go check out the band.

"Thank God," Renata muttered when Robby said it was time to go. She didn't have high hopes about the quality of the school show, but it sure as shit beat sitting around around in a dank old room awkwardly exchanging bon mots with a senior who clearly didn't want to be here, and had very little of interest to say.

One thing did nag at her a little. Robby didn't seem like the kind to haze. He wasn't social enough, didn't seem to be getting any kind of pleasure from the uncertainty and speculation his dumb story about a 'needler' was stirring up in the frosh. Ren had some experience with the 'hazing' sort, and the unifying feature they all had was that they were into it. They did it because of the rush. Robby didn't seem rushed at all.

Maybe he was just good at covering it up? What was the alternative? There was really a little...Christmas-tree monster running around? It wasn't even a consistent story. Was it killing people? No, people were just missing. But then later yeah, it was totally killing people. The hazing could be compulsory, right? Like, all the seniors were supposed to drop the story, and it'd tie into something bigger later, but Robby wasn't doing it because he wanted to.

Yeah, that could explain it.

Whatever. It was almost done...one more hill. She'd put in some face time at the big shindig, then slip out the back and go back to her room and enjoy some peace and quiet before her roommate got back. Jesus, she hadn't even MET her roommate yet.

Renata didn't even bat an eye at the Spanish whatever talk...it was some historical religious thing or something. Not too interesting.

She got up to follow Jason out.

Pip follows Robby out. She’s looking forward to listening to the band. Time to check out the rest of the freshers and see what’s what.
She can find others from her dorm and make sure she goes back with a group.

When the guard leaves, and the music starts, Dan heads out. To nobody in particular, he remarks, "Well, that was informative. In more ways than one."
