Starrblade Katana

Acquired (stolen) in Atlantis by Killian Starr. Renamed Starrblade. Originally a TW Katana, upgraded with several mods, stored in a vault in Atlantis, stolen by Killian.

Signature Weapon

Base Weapon: based on Savage Rifts TW Flaming Blade pg 98 Player's Guide.
Base Stats on the Flaming Sword (TW)
Damage: Str+d12
Weight: 1 lbs
Cost: 90,000
Notes: AP 6, Mega Damage, ignore minimum Strength, and targets may catch fire (see Savage Worlds). Looks like a normal sword hilt until activated (free action). 1 PP to activate for 5 rounds.

Starrblade Greater Flaming Katana

Conversion: 4 Major Upgrades, 2 Minor Upgrades; this weapon is a "super" version of the TW Flaming Sword.

(Four of these were created, one is with a Splougorth named Roxcryth, one with a Galaman Line Walker named Roath on Earth, one with a Galaman Shifter on G4, Mist City, the current military commander for Roxcryth, and the fourth sword is missing, lost, somewhere in the Three Galaxies! Killian has it.)

Here’s the questions.

Is it possible to convert this from a TW item to a magic item. No longer needing 1 PP to active for 5 rounds?

Is it worth doing that even?

It has no Powers. Just Edges. The PP can be used as a battery for the blade or the wielding user. But. If it is a magic item is it worth having PP?

This is the only offense item the character has. No other weapons and no offense spells yet. This will be a last resort weapon for when he has to combat one on one. How would you improve this item?

Costs likely are off. No books with me when I typed this up.

Unfortunately, existing TW items cannot be further upgraded. That said, there's a workaround:

1: Start with a baseline of the "Laser Sword" in SWADE core: Str+d6+8 Damage, AP 12.
2: Make it an Enchanted Item with two major and two minor upgrades. Two Edges for the Majors, obviously, with targets-may-catch-fire as one of the minors.
3: As an Enchanted Item, it also gets a free Trapping, in this case, "fire".

The odd issue is Mega-Damage--while the various 'factory-produced' TW and Enchanted weapons all are automagically MD, it's not clear if that's something that also goes for custom jobs. My suggestion is to make the second Minor Upgrade "Does Mega-Damage"--this seems about the right level of oomph for a GM approved Upgrade (and could be assumed to be part of the construction of the listed items).

Oddly, my version is technically higher damage than yours, for all it's "book legal" status.

Kind of an odd set of Edges to come with a weapon, though--I'd like some flavor text explaining how the sword helps you move faster and raises your awareness of your surroundings.

Thank you for this Freemage.

As far as the Edges. Far far away in a remote part of my mind I was thinking the sword might be aware and on alert. Saying watch out. Move.

Also. I’m not sure what Edges to even go with. Whichever I do go with I’m always happy to add flavor text.

  • Minor: does-mega-damage [Phase Tech: promethean technology/magic allows weapon to cause MDC]

Origin Story (How Killian got the blade)

The Scorched Lands. A dimension/world covered by black sand and rock under an angry red sky. Dolmens are used to teleport to and from the planet and to move about on the planet. Naruni Enterprises and other groups (Independent City States) conduct a lot of trade with Phase World from the planet. Valuable metals and gems are mined here. There are several cities dedicated to mining here, one of them is basically a slave-city owned by NE.

A Promethean Phase Adept, Wolfen Star Marshal, Human Space Ship Pilot and a Atlantian Monster-Slayer hired a human Shifter to help them infiltrated the NE mining slave city in order to see how bad things were there.

It turned out the Space Ship Pilot was a pirate and sold out the team. Assaulted by several dozen NE Repo Bots only the human Shifter managed to escape the battle by dimensionaly teleporting himself home. Somewhere along the line, during the fight, when the phase adept fell the Shifter took the Starrblade and used it in the fight. Until he had to escape. Safely home the Shifter realized he still held the Promethean built phase blade.

Six months later the blade was used to cut down a particular pirate.

Hum,
Let me think on this. I used the laser sword as the basis for the phase swords. However with the change to SWADE Rifts they made the laser sword no longer allowed. (I lost a couple laser swords of my own.)

However we can trap this as follows with a Vibro-sword as a the baseline (Technically RAW only enchants ancient stuff, but that is pretty dumb)

So used a Vibro-shortsword as base
Dodge works nice here, I think some GMs may require it be block, but I like Dodge.
It Burns, 3d6 MD is a whole lot of damage for a minor. Instead the RAW example of this would be the "lingering damage" modifier which reduces a die type but has the enhancements of the power. So 2d6 AP 8 on the following feels like it would be a minor. The full mechanic of it burns feels like a major.

Does this work for you?
  • 2D6 EFFECT
    2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

    3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

    4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

    6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

    9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

    11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

    12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Sure thing. I based it off a TW Flaming Sword then Laser Sword, but Vibro Sword is fine. I’m cool with anything.

The “Fast Draw” ... from anywhere ... is modeled after the Promethean power and I just wanted to be able to say: oh the sword is on the ship but I need it so bam it’s in my hand.

Yep, this makes sense especially as your are a master of time and space, so teleport is pretty natural to you. The only real risk of the dimensional trapping is it makes it vulnerable to the dimension interrupting abilities of shifters like yourself.

In the old book they had both that ability and "Attune object to owner" which allowed key functions to only work while in the hands of the rightful wielder.
