Operation WRAITH

Post by stormwell »

HMAS Enbarr
Eastern Coast of Alyeska

Things moved at seemingly breakneck speeds once the Ravener moored at RAF Station Dunfalk and you were quickly ushered into a waiting motorcade of staff cars already containing some senior officers. A brief but thorough debriefing soon followed before you were let loose on the stores and then embarked on another skyship, the light cruiser HMAS Enbarr, before the day was out. Thankfully a few familiar faces from the Ravener came with you like Hawthorne and some of his officers, who were the Enbarr's nominal command crew, and HARE herself.

Your mission; Locate and secure the Ancient skyship, then await a relief force.

Intel suggests that the Skywright's Guild might have dispatched a force of it's own with similar objectives.

Note to Players

New mission is a go, your objective is outlined above.

Feel free to sort through and acquire new Gear if you so wish.

HMAS Enbarr/Eastern Coast of Alyeska
Round 0

Penelope sat in her bunk, walled off from the male crew by a blanket, wrapped in her warm flight jacket against the Alyeskan cold. Her hands were wrapped around a hot cup of tea as she studied maps of the continent and possible locations for the Ancient skyship they were searching for. Occasionally she picked up her notebook to jot down a few thoughts for helpful gadgets to design.

Manny went in search of a gun. Just a basic one. A pistol. After the last mission, he realized that he couldn't answer all of the problems with his fists, no matter how satisfying that was. Just something basic. Just in case...

The debriefing went more-or-less as Gerald expected it to, although it was substantially shorter than he would have guessed. In the type of questioning he was used to, it was generally assumed the interviewee was lying or withholding information. When they set him loose on the armory, he thought back to the recent skirmish in the apartment courtyard. He had never really needed to bring much personal firepower to bear on an enemy, but it seemed like this might be something that he should get used to. He still favored the compact Edwards No. 3 revolver he carried, but after hemming and hawwing like a dandy looking at different neckties, he decided to avail himself of a Lloyds Machine Pistol - still small enough to fit in a cockpit with him, but with the opportunity to put more lead downrange in a hurry. He then set out to familiarize himself with the Enbarr.

Travel Encounter Card: Four of Spades
1d54: [3] = 3
The Enbarr cut through the snowy, frozen skies of Alyeska at a steady cruising pace. Where possible the crew kept inside with the warmth, though occasionally ventured out in thick coats on de-icing or lookout duties. Despite the reluctance of the crew to brave the icy air, they still went about their assigned duties with professionalism even if there still some grumbling.

The mundane routine is suddenly shattered as alarm bells start shrilling and a voice cries out over the ship's tannoy. "Action stations, action stations. All hands to action stations!"

There are shouts, cries and curses from the crew as they spring into action even if the cause of alarm is unclear. Though to get answers, the best place to probably go is the skyship's bridge.

HMAS Enbarr/Eastern Coast of Alyeska
Round 0

Penelope looked up from her maps and design work as the alert sounded. As a non-crew member, she didn’t exactly have a station to report to, but if she wanted to know what was going on, she was going to have to leave her cozy bit of warm bunk. She grabbed her gear, strapped on her fire bolt pistol and other inventions, and headed up to the bridge.

“What is the situation, gentlemen?” Penny asked, staying near the back to stay out of the way of things.

Manny looked up from the repair manuals he had been reading when he heard the alarm. As everyone started moving about in response to the bells, he stowed the books back into his bag, holstered his new pistol, and walked quickly to the bridge, arriving just after @Penelope Lane. He ducked through the hatch and stood, waiting to hear what the situation was.

Gerald was sitting amidst a pile of the heavy-duty winter gear he had requisitioned before departing, needle in hand. He found there were several adjustments that could be made to the Commonwealth-issued winter gear to make it much more usable while wearing thick gloves - pockets and cuffs widened, oversized buttons, and extra-long pulls on zips. He also found that having a few secret pockets cut into under-layers could be useful.
He was just finishing-up a stitch when the call to action stations went up. Already? he thought

Cursing, he hurriedly strapped-on his prosthetic and stomped up to the bridge, catching Manny's eye as he entered. Not wanting to interrupt, he leaned himself against the aft bulkhead and listened, hoping he could catch up on whatever he had already missed.

Hawthrone gives you all a gruff welcome as you arrive on the Enbarr's bridge. "Lookouts reported a sighting."

"Airborne." He quickly adds before you've even begun to ask questions. "Estimated to be three to five miles off our port side, or just look to the left hand side of the ship if you're unsure."

"There!" One of the bridge crew cries, pointing to a speck half-obscured by the clouds. As it draws closer it soon becomes clear that it is a dragonhawk, giant birds with long necks and tails giving them almost a similar appearance to the mythical creature from which it derives it's name. Though it continues to grow larger and larger the closer it gets to the skyship.

"How big is that blasted thing!" Hawthrone cries out after uttering a curse.

Penelope looked off to the left, then borrowed some field glasses for a closer look. “Yes, that is interesting. So how big do those things get?” she asked, estimating its size and speed. “Would firing off a shot warn it away? Or should we scramble some fighters and drive it off? Are they aggressive? What would it want with us?”

Gerald looked to the port side and saw the speck indicated by Hawthorne. He raised his binoculars and looked at the dragonhawk, thinking of what he knew about them from his life spent in Alyeska.

*+2 bonus from "Heart of the North" Edge. I don't think I formatted the roll properly to add the bonus, but a 13 is still a success with two raises so I doubt it matters

"Well, the first thing we need to do is see if this is a wild hawk or if its a Windryder's mount," Gerald peered through the binoculars holding an unlit cigarette between his teeth. "The Windryders don't like outsiders poking around the ruins, so this could mean both that we're on the right track and also that we have a problem - if this is a scout.
"To answer your question, Ms. Lane, these creatures can get to be very large. I've heard they can grow to have a wingspan over one hundred feet wide and they can pose a significant threat to aircraft smaller than the Enbarr."

Penelope considered. “Well, if it is one of these Windryders, can we signal and maybe parley?” she asked.

The gigantic dragonhawk continues to grow larger as it drew closer to the Enbarr until it almost loomed over the skyship. Realisation suddenly struck Hawthorne as he cried out. "It's heading right for us! Brace for impact!"

There was shouts and cries from the skyship's crew as they hastened to grab a hold of something to cling onto moments before the great avian collided with the aero-vessel. At the last moment, the flying leviathan pulled up and flew over the Enbarr briefly blocking out the sun as it passed over and it's talons and tail just barely missed the skyship's superstructure. In the behemoth's wake, the Enbarr violently rocked and lost a good few feet of altitude. But the great bird flew on, seemingly disinterested in the aero-vessel as it glided towards the opposite horizon.

Note to Players

First off, I need people to do an Agility roll please. Bumps and Bruises on a failure, a Wound on a Critical Failure to represent you not having such a good a hold as you first thought.

Then I need people to do a Common Knowledge roll at -2 unless you have the Heart of the North Edge (aka an Alyeskan native), though @Gerald Blissett gets a +4 for being a smartass. Success reveals that massive dragonhawks like the one you've just had a close encounter with are very rare creatures, a Raise means you recall Windryder myths about such beasts being harbingers of bad storms.

Gerald was considering whether parley with a Windryder would be possible, based on everything he knew about them it seemed unlikely, but probably worth trying if it could avoid vio-

Hearing Hawthorne's warning brought him out of his reverie as he tried to grab and brace against the nearest bulkhead. He found a good place to wedge himself and stuck in tight as the dragonhawk barely missed the skyship. Watching it fly away, he considered what this might mean. "Well, Ms. Lane, I don't know that there's anything to parley with here - a 'hawk of that size is exceedingly rare, even in the wildest parts of Alyeska. I suppose that means we should continue on?" He shrugged as he put his unlit crumpled cigarette between his lips and watched the dragonhawk depart through his binoculars.

Peter hardly hesitated to grab onto the railing the moment the ship started to shake. His knuckles turning white as he gripped as hard as he could only to end up smacking his face directly into the very bar he was holding.

After the flying leviathan had passed, the Enbarr gradually settled and the various sections of the skyship reported in. Aside from crew and aero-vessel alike being a little shaken, there weren't any issues. With the team present on the bridge, Hawthorne decides to discuss your next move.

"Welcome to the fringe." Hawthorne said, rolling out a chart of the northern Alyeskan coastline out on a map table. "Prospector's Reach is the only settlement of note in the area, everything north is untamed wilderness. Of course, there are a handful of mining and logging camps but it's a largely sparsely populated area."

"Which brings us nicely onto a problem; Local intel is as equally sparse." Continued Hawthorne. "We're flying into the unknown and even with Hare's help there is still an awful lot of ice to cover."

"We could try the Reach to gather more intel and perhaps even a lead or two, but it'll be a little out of our way and could potentially give the Guild an advantage. Tis your call."

Location: Home Isles & Hawthorne's Quarters aboard the Enbarr

Crowley had spent the time from the briefing and pretty much the entire flight, pouring over maps and making notes, while speaking with HARE.

It was little surprise to Crowley when Hawthorne called them to the Bridge of the Enbarr

"Hawthorne, anychance of setting up another Salvage Operation? Disguise the Ebnarr in with the terrain? I would say somewhere halfway between Prospector's Reach and our target location."

"HARE is certain of the area we need to search in. This area bares a lot similarities to the Wulflands site from the FOXCHASE Operation."

Gerald listened to Hawthorne and @Aleister Crowley discussing options. Even through the binoculars, he had to squint to barely make out the diminishing speck of Dragonhawk in the distance. "Captain Hawthorne is quite correct that we may be able to dig up some local gossip if we head for the Reach, but we also run the risk of attracting unwanted attention. We're already racing against the Guild, and personally I'd rather not risk dragging in any other factions ... that is, if anyone's interested in my opinion. I say we strike out for the location HARE has provided and do our best to hide from whatever locals might be out here"
