Operation FOXCHASE

Post by stormwell »

Central Lindun
Home Isles
Commonwealth of Gwentia

It’s been ten years since the Great Darmonican War ended in an armistice, leading to a decade of uneasy peace and simmering tensions. The great capital of the Commonwealth still bears the scars of the War; whole streets and districts were razed by bombing and reconstruction efforts have been painfully slow due to the threat of unexploded bombs. Here and there lie battered buildings standing lonesome amidst a sea of rubble.

It was against this backdrop that you make your way to an address in the city’s heart to a large building that had weathered the thirty year-long conflict. Its façade showed that it was once a hotel, though it’s clear that it hadn’t been used as such for quite some time. Armed soldiers stand sentry either side of the grand entrance, all the windows are still criss-crossed with tape and wartime posters still plaster the walls. The once impressive grandeur of the interior had given way to and been brushed aside by a drab military atmosphere.

Inside you are met by mixed crowd of people dressed in either military uniforms or civilian officer wear, plus more armed soldiers standing sentry. The uniformed clerk at the reception desk directs you to a room on the third floor where the meeting you’ve been called to attend is taking place. Following the directions give, you make your way to a room where other people are waiting. You’re told to take a seat on one side of the room, on the other is a man busy setting up a projector and a number of senior officers from the various branches of the Commonwealth military.

Other people arrive and then, finally, a man in a suit who clearly had some sort of authority. The man in the suit nods at the military officers before turning to face the group on your side of the room before speaking. ”Ladies and gentlemen, everything that you’re about to hear in this room is classified under the Official Secrets Act. Discussing what you’re about to hear with unauthorised persons will be considered treason and will be punished as such.”

”Now with that jolly bit of good news out of the way, time to reveal why you’re all here.” Smiled the man in the suit. ”Tensions have been steadily rising and war clouds lurk on the horizon, it’s a question of when not if another big conflict will erupt.”

”The powers that be see that war is enablable and so have started making preparations accordingly. Part of this is the formation of a specialist unit codenamed ‘Griffin Squadron’, that’s where you lot come in. You all have been invited here after being chosen from a pool of candidates, each of you have particular skills that those in authority will be an asset to the new unit.”

”First and foremost you’ll be protecting both the interests and security of the Commonwealth, though you will do so in secret. Certainly no headlines in the newssheets. You’ll be doing some of the Commonwealth’s dirty work; you name it, theres a chance you’ll be ordered to do it.”

”You’re first mission is already lined up, but before we get into that now is the perfect time for anyone to leave to do so.”

A dark haired man with a moustache stands. One would not guess he is in his mid-thirties due to his youthful exuberance and extremely handsome features. His clothes are immaculate and of the very best quality.

"Excuse me, gentlemen. I realize that this situation is new for many gathered here. "

"I would like to know, however, what is being done so that these men and this new unit, do not fall prey to the fate of the previous squadrons."

There is a hush that falls upon the room as Crowley waits for a response.

"Young man, what is your name?"

Crowley looks to the officer whose voice made the inquiry, "Formerly Sergeant Aliester Crowley."

There is a murmur and what would easily be a defeaning roar had one of the other panel members not spoken first. "Private ... Crowley. How did you manage to get into this briefing."

"Honestly sir. These proceedings were no secret. Especially when the right individuals were asked about it prior to these proceedings."

A young man stood at the back. He had dark black hair, a fair face, and his sharp brown eyes soaked it all in. He had a flight school uniform denoting he must have just graduated. His shoes were polished according to regulations as were the alignment of his trouser buttons. He was a bit on the wirery side and his eyes burned with raw determination and he walked out. I’ll be the best... I’ll do it right and show them all.

“Well excuse ME, but it looks like you boys could use a hand sorting out your security.”

A young woman, Lucille Pepper, in the far corner teases the self-aggrandizing men with one leg propped up on the chair in front of her and the other crossed over it as if she were lounging about in her own home. Her bright red hair tied back loosely hangs with an unregulated swagger. And although the rest of her uniform is kept in order, it definitely isn’t fresh. Those sitting nearby catch occasional wafts of barrel oil and gunpowder from her broad gesturing. Though she never does actually stand, she seems to take up the entire room in personality alone.

“If some lowly Private was able to sneak in you your little secret meeting it’s either not a very well kept secret or he’s clever enough to be the hand you so obviously need. And since he’s sharp enough to ask the real question on everyone’s mind, then as far as I’m concerned it’s the latter. So please tell us, sir: What IS being done?”

Crowley knew there were "others" of Griffon Squadron, like himself who had more than a bone to pick with the brass. Crowley just didn't go looking for them before the meeting had gotten under way.

When Pepper spoke up, he looked her direction and briefly touched his hand to his forehead, in acknowledgement and unwritten welcome and thanks. It been a few months since he and @enigma42091 Pepper had last crossed paths.

The young man walked back in with his flight coat on... Even more austair than what the pauper @Aleister Crowley wore. In his hand was a thick black book: Regs and Rules of the Commonwealth. He caught the little outburst of the woman. A dozen of those girls back at flight school. All posh and tosh. His eye raised when she unloaded on the top dogs. That’ll take the piss right out of them. Silently he just leaned back and watched.

Peter Crusor was silently watching the “politics” of brass unfold before him and was somewhat content with avoiding the absurdity of it for as long as he could. Thus he continued to remain silent as he then began to plan out slipping out quietly without anyone noticing

Private Jordan watches the scene before him, leaning against the door jamb with an unlit cigarette hanging impossibly from his lips. Being sworn to secrecy was a good thing, it meant he couldn't tell anyone that this motley bunch is the genesis of a special squadron. Himself included. As a bunch of hub bub erupts, Jordan straightens up and lights his cigarette.

Pitter patter, let's get at 'er.

"Looks like no one's leaving sir. How about we hear about that the first billet you got for us?"

Sitting at the table with them was another woman, as well, a striking redhead. She wore a dress in the latest Tyland fashion, expensive and stylish, and not a uniform. Unlike Pepper, she had perfect posture. She sat with a small notebook open in front of her and a pencil. One might mistake her for a secretary -- although a fashionable and expensively dressed one -- except the notebook was filled with sketches and equations, not meeting minutes.

“Such is the paradox of military intelligence, Penelope Lane said in perfect university Gwent. “But clearly we are all remaining, so please proceed,” she told the man in the suit.

"Clearly a resourceful chap..." One of the senior officers replied dryly. "But to the question at hand."

"Experience has shown that a successful unit requires the right commander, a person able to foster the strength of each member and get them to work smoothly as a team without fuss." The officer continued. "More importantly though, the commander has to have the drive and motivation to prove themselves."

"We were holding off on announcing the commander of Griffith Squadron, but since our hand has been forced..." Said the officer apologetically. "Let the record show that Private A. Crowley is breveted the rank of Acting Leftenant, subject to probation, and field command of Griffith Squadron."

"Now that little matter is dealt with, please continue Mr Collins..."

"Sir," Nodded the man in the suit. "Your first mission is codenamed Foxchase."

"A former Tylanish Air Armada captain by the name of Gaspar Tavora turned pirate after the War ended in order to continue his fight against the Commonwealth." Collins explained. "Up until now he's been little more than a nuisance, but over the past month or so he's stepped up his game and been actively raiding along the southern Alyeskan coastline."

"Intel suggests that he has a base somewhere in the area, but local RAF assets have been unable to locate it. Now this is where you chaps, and ladies, come in; you'll be given a civilian airship to give you a much greater chance of following Tavora back to his lair. Once you've located his base, it needs to be destroyed. It is up to you how you achieve this, but a squadron of RAF skyships will be standing by for your radio signal."

"Any questions?"

Penelope listened to the details of the mission while continuing to work through an equation in her notebook. She looked up and tapped pursed, perfectly painted lips with her pencil.

“By civilian aircraft, do you mean unarmed?” she asked. “Going up against pirates? So we’re bait?”

"Ms. Lane, that is exactly what they mean. Unarmed & Bait."

"This is more covert though. Civilian aircraft are stealthier in that regard. Harder to track."

"We would need to sell ourselves as tourists or possibly a research team."

Crowley turns and looks at the members of "his team". "Let us adjourn this discussion to another location."

Back to the collective brass @stormwell. "Where is the airship docked? May we be excused or are there other details to the mission?"

Peter looked at @Penelope Lane “Well the best way to hide a cannon is in plain sight isn’t it?”

He then looked at their briefers “do we have a time line and grid coordinates, finally is there a known minimal number of ships he has at his disposal?” He said trying to focus on the mission ahead but it was obvious to the very observant that he went a little absent minded immediately after, almost as if his thoughts were somewhere else completely.

Gaspar Tavor... A name that was all to familiar in the Humperdink family. His father, The Harrier, had tangled with the former Tylanish captain on more than one occasion.

Civilian, military, it did not matter the craft. Walter Humperdink, fresh out of the academy was an ace in any plane. His father had a chance to capture Gaspar during a raid a while back, but he went in half cocked without back up and flying the RAF flag loud and clear. Sure, The Harrier was able to save the hostages Gaspar’s men had taken but he missed the opportunity to end Gaspar himself. Walter glanced down at his father’s watch ticking the time away in perfect order. A symbol for everything Walter believed in and a reminder of how to do it right. Walter stood too and rattled off a crisp and clean salute towards @Aleister Crowley keeping his thoughts on women participating to himself. Even though most women pilots he had encountered had a chip on their shoulder wanting to prove something they did not even need to prove he had found them to be resourceful and creative. Anyone who had made it this far was good enough. @Penelope Lane and Miss Pepper seemed at first glance cut from the same cloth. Posh and tosh.

"No, not fully unarmed." Replied Collins. "The Ravener is an armed merchantman, most civilian aero-vessels are due to air piracy."

"But Crowley is right in one respect, you'll have an easier time finding Gaspar with a civilian vessel and than any military one. Though you will have a RAF crew manning the Ravener."

"As for Crusor's question; we have the after action reports of Gaspar's recent spite of attacks, you may be able to gleam some useful info from those. Gaspar's fleet on the other hand, well he's known to have a cruiser-class with an air wing of fighters and at least two escorts. Issue is that different vessels have been reported, possibly meaning he has a larger fleet at his disposal."

Peter heard about the fighter wing and thought about it more as he continued to force his mind not to wander

an entire fighter wing would need an entire airfield or a large sized carrier, they would also have to support an entire fleet from it which means it’s big, and any thing that size on it own would likely have outposts, resupply posts or look out posts dotting the mountains, or that’s what I would do if put in that unique situation” he looked up at Collins “is there any intel that suggests that that might be the case?

Dressed in a simple outfit of shirt and tie, suspenders, and a pair of olive green trousers that was a bit baggy on her frame. Maci Hudson, a young female medic who was obviously still in her early twenties, sat quietly during the briefing, she her eyes shifting back and forth between everyone that participated in the meeting. Although, she couldn't keep her mind from wandering on why the brass would need someone like her who had just finished her training and, more importantly, if she could even try to keep her yap shut. 'I have to admit, I did get the chance to leave.' She thought as she tampered with her dirty blonde hair that was did into two messy side buns. 'As if.' She smirked as she leant herself back into the chair, Knowing very well that there is no way she was gonna walk out of there without Knowing what was going on. Then, as if she had a glitch, the young female paused, before turning her attention back to the conversation again. Placing her hands onto her knees she leaned forward. "All that sounds great and all but what's in it for us?"She spoke up just as when the man, who's name she gathered to be Crusor @@Crusor_Peter45, had finished speaking his last syllable. She looked up and glanced at everyone in the room before placing her eyes to the ones that called the meeting.

Penny looked over at Crowley, who was, apparently, now their leader. “A research team? I have always wanted to study Ancient tech,” she admitted, a bit of excitement creeping into her cultured voice. “I’m a student of glimtech myself.” She gestured to the notebook she had been drawing in.

She looked over at the top brass. “So with a single armed merchant freighter we’re to take on an entire flight wing and support?” Penelope asked skeptically.

"Unfortunately recce flights have not been able to turn up much." Answered Collins. "The only thing of note in the area is a small colonial outpost, a private venture by the Coalition. We've contacted them whether they've suffered any pirate attacks, though they've been rather....uncommunicative on the matter."

"No Miss Lane, you are not." Collins replied, turning to face Penny. "The mission outline is to simply locate Gaspar's base and determine the best course of action to render it inoperative. An aerial flotilla will be standing by along with a detachment of Aero-Marines if you require them."

"In answer to Miss Hudson's question; A chance to serve Crown and Country at a much higher level to defend the Commonwealth and, presuming you survive, a generous pension."

Briefing Room

Up until now, Thorain had been sitting quietly, leaned back in his chair slightly. Penelope’s mention of Ancient Tech, and her statement about being a student of Glimtech, caused him to sit op and lean forward just a bit, piquing his interest even more in their upcoming travails.

”According to my parents, it was definitely easier to deal with and get work with the UP under King Francis than the newer Coalition with all its little hands and fingers not knowing what the others are doing. Although, sometimes that does work to an advantage. Sometimes the fingers tangle each other up letting industrious or perceptive folk slip here and there in the pursuit of knowledge.... I like the idea of going in as private researchers. Gives us a reason to be there, and more or less a reason to be asking questions about all sorts of things. With Miss Lane’s interest in Glimtech and mine in Ancient, I think we could reasonably present ourselves as such a team.”

Lucy rolls her eyes then twirls her hand almost graciously, "I'm sure the lords and ladies of the coalition shall be ever in our debt for making such a noble sacrifice as we play Archaeologist risking life and limb to rescue their latest supper convoy while they tangle their fingers over figgy scones at tea-time."

The room chuckles in unison. They all knew why they're there, they knew what to expect. Though the individuals had their own motives, none were forced to sign up; in the commonwealth, all volunteered to serve for one reason or another. Though it never hurts to ask. She stands, nods at Thor (that's not a terrible idea), and continues,

"So before we get into the nuances and details let me repeat this back just so its all perfectly clear:
We are to track a band of merry pirates led by Captain Tavora back to their massive yet undetectable lair; our only lead being a shady outpost who hasn't returned any of your calls (how sad); and once we find it (if we ever do), we blow it up. Well, we call in the cavalry to blow it up, or we blow it up ourselves, whatever makes sense at the time. It gets blown up. Our primary resources being the Ravener, her crew, and Leftenant Crowleys talent for smuggling himself into where he wasn't wanted and suddenly taking command of the entire situation?
That uh... sum it up? Or did you leave anything out...?"

Crowley lifts a notepad up and jots down some notes and then checks the one-sheet dossiers on the members he had recommended for his team. He had gotten wind of this event early in its planning stages and had approached Collins about the time he had found out. His team was exactly that, HIS team.

Crowley did not look old enough but he had been around during the recent wars. He knew many of his teammates and their parents and their pasts that intertwined them in the present moment. His plans extended far deeper than the military and the Commonwealth's interests. This land had more power and secrets than anyone really knew.

"Archealogists indeed. Researchers with some protection. Independent contractors are more like it."

"We need to find a suitable place to set up operations. Arriving with related and appropriate equipment for research would sell our cover."

@stormwell "Collins what do we have on the location other than a settlement? Say past research interests? Maybe military engagements? Airship wrecks?"

"Even salvagers would work as cover. That might even give us enough flexibility to be rough and tough. Depends on whether or not we could disguise our equipment and our operations appropriately."

"Any radio chatter or last transmissions we could use to triangulate the pirate base with?"

@Aleister Crowley “we could always bring our own radios to triangulate with.” He then leaned forward and turned to try face both Crowley and Colin’s if he could manage it “which actually reminds me. Would you be willing to authorize ground operations? A small team at the top of a mountain or hill could spot plenty of air ships. Triangulate even more than that. All without much risk of being seen or bothered by their ships. Although that does imply the ground isn’t too hazardous for life.”

"Out of morbid curiosity, how many of our current personel have spent extended periods out in the frozen wastelands?"

After the dramatic pause, Crowley continues. "I have been out there and survived many times. When supplies run low, how and what does one do?"

"The settlement provides us with supplies and a staging area. Once we identify salvage and researchable locations, that will give us our second point for triangulation. The airship provides us the mobility we need while still using the settlement for refueling and other necessary resources. “That settlement is just going to become a big target for attacks. A parachute team can carry enough supplies for up to 48 hours without needing to be resupplied. we will also likely be in a fixed location so air drop resupplies are an option each one being able to extend our ability to stay. And if we thoroughly camouflage attacks are highly unlikely thus ammunition will not need to be replenished.” He folds his arms “I’m not saying to not have the settlement if that’s what you are thinking I’m merely suggesting this in addition to the settlement. We likely want to do it to scout out the settlement anyways so we aren’t flying into a trap.”

"If you want us to drop you off in the 100 bajillion acres of Frozen Wasteland with 48 hours of supplies waiting for ships that may or may not pass overhead, be my guest Ranger Pete. I'm riding in the sky." Lucy did not enjoy the idea of having to stake out in the wilderness depending on an aerial resupply while the region was teeming with pirates. If she was going to face an enemy, it would be one she could fire at: you can't shoot starvation.

Where is the cheese?

Walter hung in the back his nice academy jacket snug and zipped. Even indoors he could feel the could and let’s face it when it got too cold something dark stirred within him threatening to come out... And kill. He looked forward to the challenge stick it to a villain his father failed to stop. I am in no matter the cost. I can do it right this time... He clutched his flight manual tightly, And do it by the book.

It did not seem to shake him one way or another settlement or no settlement armed ship or no armed ship. Let them winge but in the end we will get it done.

He glanced down at his father’s service watch and wondered if when they might take off.

"The area in question is part of the Wulflands." Collins pointed out. "There are a handful of ghost towns that can be scavenged, this being in addition to wrecks along the coastline."

"The Coalition has been running salvage operations through their outpost, typically hiring freelancers to do the work. So Crowley's idea as merit."

Penelope considered. “If the Coalition settlement is already running salvage with independent operators, that might be our way in,” she said. “Just another team of freelance salvagers. We can use that as an excuse to keep an eye out for the pirate. Just bring in enough salvage to maintain our cover.”

Peter hearing about the wulvers decided not to press the matter much any more and instead tried to find a map of the area. He wanted to see if he couldn’t think of where he would want to set up ambushes or observer posts if he was in their position.

(Once I find a map can I do a roll or would you prefer not?)

With one hand keeping her head propped up. Maci gently tapped the table they were sitting at. She sighed
As she listened to Crowley And Crusor squabbled about what the best course of action was. Hm? She perked up a bit at the mention of the wulflands, the thought of her father, a thought she oftentimes push away, coming mind.
Lifting her head from resting on her palms, she nodded in agreement with @Penelope Lane suggestion. " I second that." She piped in. " That's the most simple plan I've heard yet........No offence to anyone in this room but, Don't you guys think that the less complicated the plan is the better? I mean after all, this is a trained air captain we're going up against. " She shrugged nonchalantly.

“Simple is good. Simple means I get to hold onto Luther here. And simple means I don’t have to die in the cold.” Lucy grabbed her SMG as if grabbing her own nutsack. “No one is going to look twice at a gaggle of salvagers carrying a little protection. And it’ll give us some room to ask questions too. Hell, half the pirates in the Commonwealth are just salvagers anyway; caught picking through things they didn’t know they weren’t supposed to. Might even buy us a real ticket to the big gala.” She looks to Crowley, her endorsement clear.

Round 0

With the meeting concluded, Penelope got up and headed back to the women’s barracks. Most of the girls here were clerks and domestics, though since the war many women had worked as radio and radar operators and signalwomen, tracking and pushing little airplane markers around large maps. Penny had wanted to do her part in the war effort, but she was very young, and female, and so wasn’t allowed to fly. But toward the end of the war she’d gotten a taste, allowed to fly as a transporter, moving airplanes from one air base to another inside the Commonwealth.

Packing up her gear, Penelope headed for the hanger. She decided she would change into more practical clothing on the Ravener rather than hold things up.

Peter looked around before he silently collected what little he brought in the meeting and headed off for the hanger a large pit in his stomach as he took each step closer and closer to the air ship.

With his regs book clutched in one hand and he pulls his academy jacket tight keeping the cold air at bay. The questions it seemed were done so he headed to the hanger to get familiar with the flight system of the Ravener.
if given the opportunity he would do his own pre-flight check and walk a circle around the plane checking it over.

Exiting the meeting room, some of the newly formed Griffin Squadron departs to collect their things from their rooms as ordered, others didn’t own much to begin with. Lucy was one such gal. She possess much more than what was issued to her by the Commonwealth Supply Corps; and since she couldn’t wear any of that on this particular venture, she left a note with the clerk to re-use it, or keep it in storage if available. She didn’t have a breath of sentiment to speak of. Then, stepping down out of the hotel lobby threshold, she set off in the direction of the airstrip.

She hadn’t been this excited for a mission in a very long time. A chance to get her guns off AND she doesn’t have to wear a stuffy uniform. It really couldn’t get any better than that; discounting the thought of the winter wind cutting through to her bones like a surgical scalpel of course. I’ll have to find a nice thick fur jacket. Maybe I can loot something from one of those old buildings... Whatever. I’ll figure it out.

She hitches a ride on a passing shuttle to base. The crumbling facade of the city giving way to the newly built airstrip hangars. The immense bay doors of each behemoth passing slowly, one by one until she reaches Hangar “4A” the identifying letters looming large as the task before her new crack team.

Lucy looks around, no one to be seen. She reaches for the handle to the closest access door. Dammit, locked. She tries to peer through the smoked glass for signs of life. But even cupping her hands on the small window, she can’t cut through the glare reflecting from tin roofs.

She knocks on the access door, “Hello?! Anybody home?” A moment goes by with no answer. Another figure approaches her from the street side. Hearing the “tip-toeing” of footfalls, without turning, she calls back. “You know it’s impolite to sneak up on a lady...”

Peter looked at her through his thick winter goggles as the wind whipped around them. “Sorry force of habit, although...” he lifted his goggles up and onto his helmet. “If I was actually trying to be sneaky you wouldn’t have noticed me” he took off the bag that was in on his shoulder before plopping it on to the ground. “Having trouble with the lock I see?” He walked over and took a quick look at it “standard issue lock, which means standard issue lock picking will open it.” He took a step back “although maybe I shouldn’t”

"Ah, there you are." Collins called out as he approached with a gaggle of enlistedmen in tow. "Got here a bit quicker than I'd expected."

"No matter, we can't get everything unlocked as we wait for the others....Flight Sergeant Ferris if you'll please." Added Collins, addressing the enlistedmen with the last part. A gruff looking senior sergeant nodded and started bellowing orders, prompting the other airmen into a frenzy of activity as they moved to slide open the great doors of the hanger.

With a squeal and groan of metal, the hanger doors slowly opened to reveal the dimly lit interior. Gradually, the interior became clearer as the doors got wider and let in more light. The nose of an airship was revealed, with the motif of a raven with wings spread just below the tip of the nose. Though the airship looked weather-worn and old, it still looked sound.

"Well, there she is. Your new home and base, the Ravener." Collins declared. "She was bit to be a fast mailship, but converted into an armed merchantman during the war. She carries six six-inch guns, but has space for more. There is also space for up to three small aircraft, though no enclosed hanger."

Walter looked up at the big blimp. It was clear he was unimpressed by the spectacle of it. Nice ship. He cracked opened his regs book and walked around the ship slowly inspecting it and making sure it was up to snuff. He would be more impressed if it met all the required regs.

@Walter Humperdink "Walter. I trust your training record will continue to speak volumes about your compenancy. Leave nothing out of your report."

"Time is of the essence ladies and gentlemen."

@Penelope Lane "Ms. Lane, please make the bunking assignments. Be mindful of the pilots needs to be towards the front and the engineers near the engines."

"Make sure those guns are operational and stored. No need to flaunt our firepower."

@stormwell Turning towards Collins, "Anything else we should be aware of? Any contacts or people in the field we should be aware of?"

Penelope gave a low whistle as the airship was revealed. Worn, but she could see it was in good condition. She started forward, eager to study the controls, when Crowley started barking orders. She spun around to tell the man off for thinking to tell her what to do, but then remembered this was the military, and so bit back her retort.

“Fine,” she said coolly, pulling out her notebook and turning to a fresh page. She noted the number of women, who would have to be bunked together, and who was a pilot and who an engineer, and then headed for the airship to see what the living arrangements were.

Lucy didn't need direction to know which direction she would head first: the heavy arms.

She found each of her six new foster children waiting for her, mounted in two lines waiting to be inspected ala the Sound of Music.

She approached them with a queer balance of stolid reverence and giddy excitement. Inspecting each cannon with a motherly grace, noting the subtle quirks of each seemingly identical machine. Other less enlightened operators may have treated these weapons merely as tools for destruction, but she knew that each one would have its own personality; they would each speak with their own unique voice, and Lucy couldn't wait to hear her babies sing.

She gathered the necessary rags, solvents, and oils, and set to work changing diapers.

Walter nearly dropped his clip board as he was making his rounds around the air ship. Did he just say avoid regulations? I for one will take a gunner. Siliently the young pilot handed @Aleister Crowley his full report on the status of the ship... It was not good. Possible months to get everything to “By the Book”. The bottom of the report had a small request for a 2-man air craft.

Peter stood there rather silently as he looked up at the behemoth that would be their home for the foreseeable future. Just the sight of it had him longing even more for the feeling of solid ground beneath his feet. However peter was a soldier and also not one to speak up thus he would likely be spending a lot of sleepless nights aboard this flying steel coffin.

"I must stress time is off the essence, you're expected to depart within the day." Stated Collins. "You'll have time to familiarize yourselves with the Ravener and her crew on the crossing over to Alyeska."

"Now is the time for final preparations and the acquisition of the last few pieces of equipment that you feel you will need." Collins explained. "Ah, here comes the crew now. They're the ones who'll be dealing with loading the stores and making the airship ready for departure."

"If you'll excuse me, I have to go deal with the relevant paperwork for your departure."

Collins made to leave as a large crowd of aero-mariners made their way towards the airship, though dressed like civilians they still had a military air about them as they were matched into the hanger in a manner that would've brought a tear to the eye of a parade ground sergeant. A man, with the bearing of an officer, came over to the group and saluted. "Hawthorne, Wing Commander, Royal Aero-Fleet. I'll be commanding the crew and handling the routine aspects of the airship."

Peter looked over at the crew as they approached. He saw those who were proud and enjoyed being there, eager for the chance to get so close to battle. Those who were stuck up and thought themselves better than the others who stood beside them, despite being in the same place as them. The inevitable screw ups who just wanted to finish their term and leave as soon as possible. He then also saw one that was making a good effort to hide and go unnoticed, but to Crusor’s
sharp eye it made him stick out even more. Eventually he finally turned back towards the large ship and returned to generally dreading the experiences he would have on it.

Walter snapped his manual on operations shut. There was simply no way this heap would meet regs. At least it will not fall apart.. He had already handed @Aleister Crowley his request for a two person plane and there was little more he could ask for.

He pulled his jacket tight grabbed his ruck sack and went aboard. He spent his time in the crew quarters tying sheets per @Penelope Lane’s modest request. If they want the best up in the cockpit they will call, until then I’ll set up these dividers according to regs.

Some of the younger enlisted boys gathered round the sheets jeering about taking peeks and whether or not they could sneak a glimpse of skin.

The older men near the entrance of the berthing chuckled briefly, but then "continued" setting up their bunks pretending not to take part in the boisterous guffaw as they were the first to notice. One by one the mouths of the next cluster snapped shut, each body stiffened, their eyes wide as a shade from hell drifted past. The taunts from the front proceeding in ignorance until they finally felt the broiling steam of the demon's aura desiccating the newly formed sweat from their backs. The room fell silent, save the steady treads of doom.

Lucy carried with her those few items she did bring to the Ravener. She eyed the blankets Walter hoisted. He did make every effort to ensure the ladies would have their privacy under the circumstances. But she knew the blankets in themselves wouldn't be enough to stave the wandering eyes of a rowdy crowd of adolescent imps. These urchins would only respond to threats of severe discipline.

Lucy addressed the congregation hefting her SMG, “Gentlemen, my poor, poor baby here works very, very hard. That makes her very, very tired and when she's very, very tired she needs lots and lots of rest. Now I do my best to comfort her at night and keep her nice and quiet. But she is a very, very light sleeper. And if any one of you so much as grazes this curtain, you might wake her. Now I know it wasn't your fault. But if you disturb my poor, poor baby who is so very, very tired, you’ll make her upset. And when my poor, poor baby is so very, very upset, you might make her cry. And you don’t want to make her cry, do you?” The men shook their heads in unison. "Very well."

Lucy disappeared behind the now impregnable barrier. From then on, the men gave the curtain a wide berth.

Penelope chuckled as she followed Lucy behind the blanket curtains. “You didn’t need to make their balls fall off, Lucy,” she said teasingly. “I don’t mind a little attention.” She peeked through the curtains herself, catching some of the young men in various states of undress. “I have a feeling we will need to get used to close quarters.” She tossed her bag onto a bunk and started to undress herself. After all, her nice dress wouldn’t work well on the airship. Better to change into her trousers, shirt, and boots and keep the dress for niceties.”

The crew busied themselves with getting settled in, unpacking gear or finding make work to avoid the attention of the NCOs. Soon the corridors and passageways of the airship were filled with shouts, curses and the whine of power tools as crewmen set about preparing the Ravener for departure. Eventually the airship was towed out of its great hanger into the warm glow of the midday sun, here the airship's own cargo cranes were able to hoist heavier equipment onboard. During this time a pair of aircraft were also towed over; one bearing the recognizable stout form of a Commonwealth Kestrel fighter whilst the other had a stumpy, ungainly look with a short body, large engine and a rear turret. Both aircraft were hoisted up in turn by the aft crane and positioned on the pair launching rails on the portside of the airship near the tail assembly.

Collins also returned with information that the airship was able to depart soon as it was ready to do so, baring any last minute issues or requests.

As he continued walking he noted that @Walter Humperdink was standing nearby, following regs, as usual. The boy was skilled. Need to get him focused on the smaller craft.

Standing close and nearby, "Walter, the other aircraft are loaded. They need a thorough inspection as well. Familiarize yourself with both and let me know which one is your prefernce." Did he get promoted to officer? Which would he prefer. However all these ideas did help him to stop thinking about flying... fo a moment.

Studying Peter's physical changes, "Are you okay with enclosed spaces? Or is it a concern with how old this airship is, like a reliance on the new and best equipment." Crowley points to the well maintained gear on Peter's rack.

There was an Aero-Fleet mechanic busy working on the launch mechanisms for the planes, ensuring that the gears were well oiled and in good condition. The two planes been tied with securing straps so that the launch mechanisms could be tested without fear of sending the aircraft crashing into the ground below. After a moment, the man wiped his oily hands on a handkerchief and looked up.

"Oh," he muttered. "Can I help ye mam?"

Crowley continues to wander his way through the airship, checking on this or that but generally staying out of the way and observing. When he finds his way to the bridge or pilot's cabin, he checks the crude maps against hsi field journal. Rumors and myths fill the pages of his field journal and he is now able to put some firm coordinates to some of them, others are still vague and unspecified.

Wulver country does bother him some but a good bit of diplomacy and some sound negotiations should get his team the information they need and a solid cover for their presence in Wulver territory.

Penelope finished changing, checking the lines of her shirt and trousers as best she could without a mirror, and adjusting her hair. After all, a lady should look good, even in men’s clothes, though the cut of these wasn’t masculine, but designed to go with her figure.

Opening the blankets, Penny stepped through. Several of the men looked over, and she favored them with a smile. “Well, boys, let’s have some fun. Anyone know if there’s a workshop on this ship?” she asked. Maybe she could make a few modifications to improve the Ravener.

"Tis O'Brien mam." The mechanic answered. "Leading Aircraftman O'Brien, Air Mechanic."

"It's me job ta make the kites are serviceable." O'Brien said, jerking a thumb over his shoulder at the two aircraft.

Alyeska, A Few Days Later

After three days of flying through storm-wracked skies, that dominated the vast ocean between the Home Isles and Alyeska, the Ravener reached the Frontier Continent. The rough crossing wasn't without its cost for the airship needed minor repairs, a task seen to by the RAF crewmen under Hawthorne's command. Now Hawthorne himself has called you for a meeting in the Officer's Wardroom to discuss your next moves.

Now you decide what to do next; head to the Coalition outpost? Scout the area for a spot to set up a salvage camp?

Also an opportunity for an Interlude, basically describe what your character does in the three day long crossing or something from their past. You'll be rewarded with a Bennie that will carry over into the next Quarter.

Crusor found that life aboard the ship seemed to warrant the distrainment he had for it. His ears were also always in pain as the higher altitudes pressed and pulled on his ear drums. The air was also a lot thinner, it made trying to do his morning, afternoon, and night runs, a whole lot harder. Each breath felt more like a gasp as his lungs couldn’t seem to get used to it all. He also couldn’t shake the perpetual sense of falling. The sense that the metal death trap was either pulling its self farther and farther from the group, or alternatively falling towards the ground with just enough control that they could merely going back to moving away precisely when they needed to to prevent them from being crushed against a mountain

Alyeska/Ravener
Round 0

Penelope took a few flights on the Ravener’s two planes to give them a test, and also learned the ins and outs of the Ravener’s controls. She wanted to be able to fly anything the team had. The rest of the time she sat in the mess with her sketchbook and drafting equipment, drawing and working some figures on some devices she thought could be useful in their pursuit. A few of the crewman tried to chat her up, and one got a bit handsy in the narrow corridors of the airship as they passed, but her knee gently, “accidentally,” reminded him that she was a lady, and he went on his business a bit more soprano.

Not that she didn’t appreciate it. Like any woman, she enjoyed a bit of attention. But the men were going to have to be a bit more gentlemanly before they got any lady favors from her. Not that she was a prude or anything.

“Do we need to report in to the Coalition base?” Penelope asked. “What is the normal protocol out here? We wouldn’t want to blow our cover by associating with the Coalition if that isn’t needed.”

Lucy enters like a hurricane. late but having heard enough of the conversation from the hall to stoke her already burning embers. Her appearance looking more and more disheveled each day: building up maintenance grease, grime, and sweat. Her clothes hardly resemble the uniform it once was both in wear and tear. But most of all Lucy looks completely different from her facade in the capital and closer to her true Valkyrie-self.

"It's not a pirate base, Pete. It's a trade outpost. It's filled with traders, not traitors. If you want to scout something, maybe you can scout us something good to eat other than these terrible trash rations, these "trash-ions" we've been stuck with for the last... however long! I am sick and tired of dehydrated whatever-this-is. You wanna know how we are for supplies? We have unlimited nutrients, we have all the protein flakes and carbo-dust you could ever want, but we've got no Damned FOOD!!! Freakin' Pumperpuss over here stuffed up our stores with nothing but ash and soot to make rocks of bread that I'm sure fit well up to regs! How do you live with yourself, Walter? I'm sure you survive, but how do you live?

Penny's got the right idea with the pub. We should make friends and behave like normal salvagers. Hell, it might take a couple of weeks of coming and going before anyone even trusts us enough to say hello in a friendly manner, let alone start telling us all about all the town secrets. Imagine if a bunch of strangers just started coming into your town and asking about pirates. You'd think, 'this group is either law enforcement or they're bounty hunters.' And nobody out in these parts wants to talk to any of the sort. If our current masquerade is going to work, we should come in just as tired and hungry as we all are right now, get a drink and try to strike up some business.

If you go out ahead and a pirate scout finds you first, that will just alert them that something is up. But if you come through and relax with a pint like the rest of us, then nothing is suspicious, because there'd be nothing to be suspicious about. Right? But the real question I think we should be asking ourselves is what on earth are we going to sell for salvage to begin with? Maybe that's what you should start scouting for! We need to come in there with goods to sell... I know... maybe, we can sell the MOUNTAIN OF INEDIBLE DUST IN THE PANTRY!!!"

And just like that she storms out, to find another subject for her displaced wrath.

Peter stood there, very confused and befuddled. After a while he started to feel like for some reason her rant was mostly directed at him. Thus he quickly tried to sneak off into a corner where he could try and hide. He was already having a hard enough time being in the air, and thus couldn’t think of how else to handle a problem he couldn’t shoot. Especially one beyond his control.

Crowley looked up from his notebook, where he had detailed conversations and other information pertinent to his research and to their work.

"Hawthorne, find the first suitable landing zone in the salvage areas."

"We will set up operations over the next week. By week's end we should have suitable material to take into the outpost and spend a couple of days familiarizing ourselves with the locals."

"Hawthorne. You and the Ravener will fly every couple of days. Either to the outpost or back into home base. Cargo supply runs as you will. Use the time to scan the air and the ground."

"The two smaller aircraft we shall cover and stow and maintain near our salvage operations. We have a few pilots who could fly and use some flight time."

Crowley is grateful for the heavy canvas tents and the portable pot belly stoves they brought with them. The tents have a common central room and three rooms joining to the common room. The pot belly stoves would occupy each room and a couple would be in the central room.

Salvage would be kept in another similar chambered tent with radio and comms stored among the salvage. No heater in the salvage tent, as to remain out of suspicions to anyone investigating the camp and operations.

"Understood." Hawthorne nods. "The navigator has already picked out one or two locations on the chart, defence on the ground is our biggest concern here and so we've found a hill you might like. Should let you see anything coming long before it becomes a problem, also theres a river and a ghost town close by."

Hawthorne turns to speak to his first mate, who in turn relies the Wing Commander's orders.

As Hawthorne stated, the hill does indeed over a good vantage point with views stretching to a few miles away from the hill. Some of the airship's crew are enlisted in helping to strike camp by setting up tents, a handful stay partially for defence and partially too look after the two aircraft.

Task For Players
There are many sights visible from the hill upon which you have setup camp, in particular a few notable landmarks.

Make a Notice roll and for each success and raise you can describe a particular feature, landmark or sighting of wildlife. What you describe may get used in the adventure.

By week's end you are ready to head into the outpost as per Crowley's suggestion. Hawthorne, from the Ravener's previous couple of trips, reported seeing a fair number of free traders, Coalition hired mercs and the usual ne'er-do-wells who commonly inhabit aeroports. There were a few individuals whom Hawthorne suspected might've been sky pirates, though the RAF officer admits it was more of a hunch rather than anything concrete. A full squadron of fighter aircraft and a battery of anti-air guns are reported as being part of the outpost's defences.

As the crew set up the camp, Penelope borrowed a pair of binoculars and scanned the surrounding landscape. She looked to the east, where a valley opened up in the mountains. The valley was filled with a glacier, the towering ice pushing its debris field ahead of it. She focused the binoculars down and saw an opening in the ice, like a cave. She couldn’t see much behind the opening, but it was intriguing.

Her attention was pulled to the south by a trumpeting sound, and she spotted a herd of white, long-haired snowy mammoths moving along, large tusks plowing up snow in search of any remaining spring greenery.

Walter kept much to himself during the trip. Going to confront or even possibly confront his father’s greatest failure had given him alot to think about. At one point he glanced out the starboard view port of the air ship and saw something that brought a smile to his lips. I've never seen a mother bear before, he thought to himself, What a beautiful sight to behold. It was so strange to see two animals who have no experience with each other, but the father and the mother bear together, their faces looking at one another, the eyes touching. Walter looked in the direction of the mother bear's face and spotted something white on the top of its head. He looked back at the father and he saw what he thought could only be a white patch on the father's chest, but as he studied it more closely the patch was slowly peeling away leaving a small hole. What is that? Walter blinked and the frozen tundra where he saw the bears was filled with smoke obscuring the sight he was watching.

Crowley made sure that partners worked together. When salvage was found, they came together and evaluated and sorted and collected more. By weeks end they had a varied assortment of salvage to trade at the outpost.

One of the side tasks they worked on, was identifying the wreckage before they salvaged from it. Crowley made sure that each team member had at least two distinct details to inquire about when they visited the outpost.

Odd terrain around these parts. The entire location was turned up tundra and plains from downed and crashed aircraft. So it stode to reason that the hill Hawthorne had identified was likewise related to a crash.

So it was that Crowley found himself each day in the first week, circling the hill with any team member he could find who was not already engaged or assigned. It took a bit to figure out that the ravine that ran for several hundred meters was actually the crash path of a downed airship. The moraine of the downed airship created a cavern at the end of the ravine nearest the base of the hill.

The downed airship had plowed up snow and ice in sheets. These sheets had stacked one on top of the other as the sheets had sheered and buckled. The cavern Crowley had found was supported by the buried airship and these snow and ice layers on three sides. The cavern was barely noticeable as ice had formed creating a natural barrier that required the team to chip and chisel away at it.

The Coalition outpost, dubbed 'Port Avro' according to the various signs round the place, is a sprawl of prefab buildings that barely stand taller than a couple of stories. There is a heavy presence of corporate mercs clad in the uniform of Avroville Industries, the main corporation financing the outpost, patrolling the town keeping law and order. At the aerodrome is two squadrons of A.I's sleek looking Sparrowhawk fighters with their sweptback gull-wings and gleaming paintwork.

The outpost is a bustling place, the aerodrome especially playing host to a number of airships which mostly include gasbag types along with a couple of skyships. Scavengers and aviators throng the streets, visiting the establishments on offer or browsing the junker's market full of stalls laden with salvage that Avroville's own officers weren't interested in.

To The Players

There are four different locations that you can visit in order to gleam information, Persuasion and Intimidation are the most obvious skills but I'll reward creativity using other skills.

Administration Office:- The administrative building from which Port Avro is governed, Avroville Industries has its assessors based here for scavengers to bring salvage to in hopes that the corporation is interested.

Junker's Market:- What Avroville doesn't buy ends up here, though occasionally valuable items end up being sold here first.

Taverns:- There are a handful of taverns, and other establishments, in Port Avro forming the outpost's service industry with a cut of the profits going to the corporation.

Aerodrome:- The main entry and exit point for the outpost, obviously a fair number of aviators can be found here.

Round 0

Pelenope decided to hit the tavern. She walked in, allowing her eyes to adjust to the lack of snow glare, and found herself the center of attention. She gave a beautiful smile. The mostly male clientele were always fascinated by a new woman in town, and Penelope wasn’t dressed as one of the local ladies of negotiable affection. She soon had the lads buying her drinks as she chatted them up.

Fresh from the academy with a bit of that new aredine smell to him Walter went straight for the Aerodrome. Most folks would never peg him for a Humperdink, or at least stock from that Humperdink. But he had his father’s watch which had belomged to his father’s and his father’s before him. Walter scoweled as he past no doubt 12 infractions just disembarking. He glanced down at his pocket watch tucked carefully in his inside coat pocket. Inscribed on the back were the words, and pass phrases any pilot worth his salt would immediately recognize and treat Walter as a brother. One in particular made him pause, The bitter nine... Dad used to tell me stories about a group of nine pilots he flew with.

Crowley watches as each of the other team members heads off. The load of salvage he has under the tarp should get some descent looks from the Avroville Industries chaps. He coordinates with Hawthorne and a few of his men to get the salvage into the Adminstration building.

"Gentlemen, I know that these salvaged parts maybe a few years old. They are however in excellent condition."

"Who wants to start bidding, by looking these items over?"
