Re: ARES Submission: Mind's Eye

Post by Mitchell Maxwell »

Background

Mitchell Maxwell joined the ARES project for the reasons most men his age did. He wanted to contribute to the cause and help defeat the Alien threat that was destroying the world. Before the invasion, he had been drifting from job to job one step ahead of being homeless. It was never a question of aptitude, more that he grew bored of the work and just moved on.

On a whim one day, he walked into a half burned out office building claiming to be a recruiting center for ‘those with exceptional aptitude’. Admittedly, he was average at best with most of the physical tests. On the mental aptitude, however, he showed well above average proficiency. He was quickly shuttled to another facility where more tests were performed. That lasted for two days. Then the ‘awakening phase’ began. He was put through intense psychotherapy and given mind bending psychoactive drugs. He spent his days trying to guess cards instructors were holding or attempting to guess at thoughts all the while being subjected to electric shocks of various intensity. None of it produced any results until one of the instructors turned up the electrical shock to maximum. In a scream of pain, Mitchell threw the instructor threw the back wall of the testing room.

From then on, his telekinetic ability was cultivated to the point where it was strong enough to lift over five tons. He was sent on missions to combat the alien threat and earned several medals doing so. One day on patrol with his ARES squad, the Sensitive failed to pick up the alien trap they walked into. Before anyone could react, plasma grenades exploded all around them. All but Mitchell were killed. His telekinetic resistance saved him from the explosion, but the plasma burned him badly and melted his eyes in their sockets. He was left for dead and the pain he was in made him wish it were true. Mitchell had no idea how long he laid there suffering. He has vague memories of people helping giving him water and food. They must have been refugees as their supplies and means were meager at best. Eventually, Mitchell noticed that he could sense his surroundings. Things were ‘fuzzy’ at first, literally as he mentally felt his surroundings with his mind. Over period time he mastered his telekinetic awareness to the point where it compensated fully for his lost sight.
By the time he was ready to look for what was left as the ARES project, the war was over. Now superhumans were being hunted now that they were no longer needed. Mitchell immediately went back into hiding, helping the refugees as much as he could. He continues to do what he can to help those in need.
