XMAS PARTY IN SAN DIEGO

The background noise inside the Freshly Juiced Dragon is a mixture of pleasant talk among friends and the news broadcast a few are listening to on the 40k viewer on the wall. A brunette female newscaster is interviewing a man standing in front of a space shuttle. Dressed in a dark blue uniform the man is answering questions about flying the new X55 KLS Space Hopper Shuttle.

The same man is sitting in a chair inside the FJD next to US Navy K9 handler, Thomas Prosek.

"Ed you lucky bastard, not only did you get to be the first pilot of the X55, you rocketed out to Mars and back in less than 24 hours, your new fame got you interviewed by Stacy Mann on 11 News! I'm telling you Benny, Ed has now set the fastest speed record for mankind! To think he was basically a nerdy stoner when we were in High School, playing roll playing games, reading about hobbits, but now a Spaceman!"

Thomas laughs and toasts his drink to his friend Ed as Shadow, the K9, rests by the cops feet, happily working on a bone dyed to look like a candy cane that Savine gave the dog when Thomas and Shadow arrived 30 minutes ago with Thomas' old friend Captain Edred Rezik of the KLS corporation space program.

For his part, Ed is dressed in jeans and a simple black shirt with the letters KLS over the small front pocket that has two pens poking out of it and looks shyly around as Thomas loudly cheers when the news shows the X55 Spaceship rocketing away from Earth, footage from the other day.

Shadows lets out a woowoo rooroo noise as Thomas claps and points at the news.

Ed laughs at the dog making funny noises. "I know boy, you'd think he was in love with me, but we know he only really loves you Shadow."

Savine moves from where Lukas is sitting nursing a warm drink and quietly chatting about how the strange kid just came out of nowhere and was nekkid and stole his cloths. Lukas had arrived back at the FJD a few hours prior and explained the strange events.

A kid had suddenly shown up in the alley the homeless man lived in, stolen his cloths by force and run away. Lukas now had managed to dirty up a new set of clothing that Thomas had bought the man after finding Lukas hidden in a dumpster. Apparently Lukas had been hiding in the dumpster for days until Thomas found him early this morning.

Savine moved around the FJD and offered refills, cookies off a tray she was holding, and conversation with everyone. She looked happy, alive, and thoroughly enjoying the party, making a point to interact with everyone.

Soft music, the newscast of the X55 KLS mission to Mars and back, merriment and snacks and drinks, those in attendance had a lot to be thankful for. Good friends, news earlier in the day of the President visiting NORAD with a promise of turning the once military site into a center for learning and space exploration, which would open up hundreds of jobs. For once the news was not talking about South America or European Juicer hit squads in the Middle East, no mention of the new mind over matter program and the resulting third world nations employing said lunatics in their armies. Even with a new cold war era ushering in, the golden age was a better place than anything known in previous centuries, a new medical breakthrough had been announced yesterday that would end cancer, and it would be available to the public in a year.

The warm San Diego bay juice bar was definitely inviting and cheery.

THE GREAT CATACLYSM

Suddenly the ground shook.

Four words that are a massive understatement.

The ground blasted, rocked, rolled and cracked. Out of nowhere rain plummeted down in droves of pelting drops. As Californians an earthquake is nothing new, they happen often. This was undoubtedly the big one, a 7 to 9 on the Richter scale! The walls of the juice bar warped and wavered. Every window in the joint shattered casting quake proof glass across the juice bar. Savine screamed in pain as fragments of glass cut her face and she was thrown to the ground by the quake. Shadow started barking loudly and stood up after falling due to the ground lifting then dropping as a wave moved through the juice bar. Thomas went from cheering at the X55 footage to falling out of his chair as he saw new footage of South America on the video screen with bizarre blue lines of energy crisscrossing the area being shown, then the video screen shattered and fell to the floor as the Naval Police hover car that Thomas had left parked, hovering, above the juice bar was hit by a massive rock or part of another building, the weight pushing the hover car down onto of the juice bar then rolling sideways and crashing into the street in flames. Lukas was actually thrown out the front door as the ground lifted and dropped, landing outside the homeless man looked with horror at the crashed patrol vehicle just feet away from him.

Standing up on wobbly legs Lukas was silhouetted in the night outside the juice bar by street lights, then he "disappeared" into darkness as all lights on the west coast turned off. A few moments of adjusting ones eyes to the new darkness and lack of electricity and he could be seen again standing outside looking at the patrol hover car that burned brighter and then sputtered out from the drenching rain.

Pouring rain.
No power.
Continued after quakes of a 5 or 6.
Crumbling building around the FJD which had held up pretty well other than the glass.
Fires of accidents outside.
A screaming crash as a hover bus slammed into the building adjacent to the FJD and dropped to the street.
The sudden realization that the floor of the juice bar, the street outside, everywhere was covered by about four inches of water, as if the bay had rushed inland to soak everyone's shoes.

A WORLD GONE MAD
  • Screams for help from the bus. Shadow barked and rushed out the doors of the FJD towards the bus outside, racing across the water and passing Lukas who dropped to his knees and looked at his cut up hands. [Lukas: Shaken + 1 Wound]
  • Savine clawed across shattered glass reaching for a chair to try pulling herself upright and looked in pain, one hand holding her left side. [Savine: Shaken]
  • Thomas groaned and lay on his backside as his friend Ed applied pressure to a wound on the cops leg. Something had lacerated his upper thigh. [Thomas: Shaken + 1 Wound].

The six of you are larger than life PCs, you don't take any Shaken or Wounds like most of the NPCs did. Lucky you. Initiate Cards for Player Characters will follow. If you got a Club, remember that is a Complication and comes with a -2 to your participation in the task.

The Dramatic Task will be the six of you Player Characters, over three rounds, needing to gather 16 Tokens, to completely succeed.

HOVER BUS AFLAME

Screams for help from the bus.

"Shadow!"

"Stay still Thomas, I am trying to mend your leg, Shadow is outside by a crashed bus."

"Damn, those people need help."

"Thomas, do you think a nuke hit us?"

"No, just before the video screen shattered I saw something else...this isn't a nuke its something far worse. Those people need rescuing!"

Looking up from the cop at everyone else, Ed says: "Can you help them?"

Across the wet street, burning even under heavy rain, is the crash site of a large hover city bus. Laying on its side those inside (16 still alive, 4 dead) are calling out in fear and pain for help. Shadow is barking at the bus and running around the bus looking for a way inside. The dog may be having a hard time of it, but a person could manage to get into the bus. You are tasked with rescuing 16 surviving people in the bus. If you get 16 Tokens collectively as the six of you, all the crash victims will be saved, less Tokens will result in loss of life.

DRAMATIC TASK RULES SWADE

Narrate your reaction, experience as the world crashes down around you and then move into getting those Tokens.

Dramatic Task: Hover Bus Rescue
In this scene you care attempting to rescue trapped citizens in the crashed hover bus that is on fire. If the fire is not extinguished the bus will explode and do more damage to the area.

Dramatic Task
Rounds: 3

Putting out the flames: 4 tokens
Skills: Any applicable rolled at -2 (negative due to weather, and situation)

Getting into the overturned bus: 4 tokens
Skills: Any applicable rolled at -2 (negative due to weather, and situation)

Getting survivors out and into the safety of the FJD: 8 tokens
Skills: Any applicable rolled at -2 (negative due to weather, and situation)

Total: 16 tokens

Support
Remember you can use any skill to support someone taking on one of the main tasks.

Failure
If the group fails to collect all the 16 tokens then some of the 16 alive passengers will die.

Club Cards "suffer" a Complication and are at an additional -2 to the scene.

Cards

Maria "Rio" 1d56: 33 = 8 Clubs
Wesley "Stones" 1d56: 48 = 10 Diamonds
Juno 1d56: 15 = 3 Hearts
Ven 1d56: 27 = 2 Clubs
Samuel 1d56: 29 = 4 Clubs
Benny 1d56: 31 = 6 Clubs

Okay...gees that's a lot of Clubs. Remember you have bonuses that you earned from doing the CONFLICTED thing, so maybe use those!

Fun Fact

So you saw that Chaos Earth banner at the top right? I actually have it printed out and hanging in my basement. Mostly because I have run CE IRL for years now, and partly cause I'm a nerd. Nerd? Committed! Yeah that's it, committed.

Benny grinned at Thomas nodding, ” Yeah you got it Tommy. Spacemen get all the girls too.” He glanced over towards the Naval base the thoughts of Birtchtree still with him. Well I better tell them... Inoperable brain cancer, doctors said it was a miracle I was even alive at this point.

”Everyone I have-“ Then the world changed.
”SAVINE! SAVINE!” Ok she is ok... Benny crawled over to his friend nabbing the first aid kit behind the bar. He had gotten his fair share of cuts and scrapes while surfing and knew enough to help her quickly. What is going on outside? Is that shadow?

Benny covered Savine’s head as the heat wave washed over them. Benny’s eyes grew wide ad he exclaimed, ” Was that a hover bus? Are we under attack! My phone is not working!” He glanced down at his dead phone and thn to the front door. His juice bar seemed mostly intact. ” Savine you got hit in the head a bit... Can you hear me? Stay here... I am going to get folks out of the bus and send them in.” He looked at her clutching her hand and whispered, ” I wanted to tell you... I have brain cancer... I am sorry, we’ll talk more. You have always been a good friend...” Benny left his employee and dear friend behind. It would only be later that Benny would discover whatever had happened had taken Savine’s hearing...

Benny bounded to the bus despite the flames. ” Common Shadow lets get in there.” He managed to kick the back window in and wrestle the door open. The smoke was billowing everywhere. He coughed and grabbed the first person he saw. A heavy son of a bitch... Once he got back to the steps of the FJD he put the man down catching a good look at his face... ” Ted... Ted Danson.” Benny did not normally hate people, he was pretty mild mannered, but good god if there was someone he did not like it was his surfing Rival Ted Danson. Benny would call him a cheater but smooth Teddy has everyone fooled.

Ted caughed and Benny sighed looking down at his rival. The owner of perhaps the last juice bar on earth muttered, ” Just great. You had to survive the bertlham.”

Stones has been in rough weather before and even experienced some earthquakes. The rain was nothing new and he preferred being wet as much as being dry. The glass was a pain and finding himself on his back was irksome as well.

Getting himself to his feet, Stones stood and surveyed the store. @Benny Gumbo rushed past him as he said something about getting the store ready to receive survivors. Seeing Savine try and understand Benny, Stones decided to start where he was to make a difference. He headed for the back of the shop for a broom.

As he passed Ed and Thomas, he glanced down at the Sergeant. "Upper Leg. Away from the femoral artery. Good."

Heading into the back, he finds a push broom and a trash can. Looking for the dustpan he decides against it and gets a side of a cardboard box. Sweeping the floor proves tedious but after a bit the broken glass complies. Helping Savine to her feet, he shows her what he is doing and she leans down to assist. Thankfully she has not lost her balance.

When the floor is clean, Stones points Savine to the benches and seats and motions sweeping. He heads back to the counter and begins dragging a couple of tables over. When he is certain the platform is stable and not moving, he goes back behind the counter for a few bar towels and some duct tape. Thank God. Benny has been watching the survivalist networks.

Heading over to the Navy Cop and his friend, Ed, Stones grabs the left out first aid kit. First Aid Kit. My Lord it is a mobile trauma unit. Not being able to help himself, Stones shouts to Benny, "Do you have one of those six-wheeled mobile survival units parked out back?"

Setting down near Ed and Thomas, he comforts both men and then sets to work at helping both men.

Ed was quick and Stones told him so. Also Stones could not find what cut Thomas's leg which worried Stones. However Stones was able to find liquid sutures and a pair of surgery scissors. "Thomas, try to avoid any uniform inspections in the near future." Stones smiled as his joke as he set to work cutting the pant leg clear of the wound.

Hydrogen Peroxide in the cut caused Thomas to wince but he held out strong in the end. Surgical tape carefully placed, Stones applies the liquid sutures. Waiting between applications of the liquid sutures and moving the surgical tape, Stones says to Thomas, "Got a place for you to organize efforts," Stones points to the couple of tables pulled up near the counter.

With the clean towels from the table near the two men and the duct tape, Stones constructs a covering for the wound that meshes with Thomas's pants. With Ed's help they get Thomas onto his feet and over to the two tables. Once Thomas is able to see things from a higher perspective he is able to negotiate and instruct others where to put the bus survivors.

Xmas Party

Sam sat quietly sipping his egg nog (a rare break from his usual, in deference to the season and Savine's urgings) and nibbling on a gingerbread man. He had taken pains to sit well away from Thomas and Ed, though he did give Thomas a begrudging nod of respect for locating Lucas--his own efforts on that front had proved fruitless, lacking the information network he had back in Chicago.

Still, it isn't in him to be too chummy with a cop, especially one sitting next to a spokesdupe for the Space Conspiracy. (His personal investigations had all but confirmed that the entire space program from the Apollo mission onward had been a hoax--not that the US hadn't gone to the moon, Mars and even beyond, but rather that the publicly known missions were all a carefully designed charade; the Sol System Colonies were a carefully guarded secret in case environmental degradation of Earth proved too great even for humanity's advanced technology to correct, and the Elite needed a safe haven to retreat to, without letting the general public in on it. The fake missions were basically a cover for the funding.)

Still, he chats amiably with Lukas, especially when Savine was tending to other customers, to help steady the man. "That attacker--strange. Normally nudity is a tactic of the Discordians, but they only go after government types. Did the kid say anything when he attacked you? Maybe he was one of the mad Merovingians...."

The two men continue to discuss increasingly outlandish theories about what was behind the bizarre attack, though it turns into a gently heated argument when the news comes on about the cancer cure--Lukas is convinced that the 'cure' is actually a new nano-virus that will permit direct control of the patients, while Sam figures that the Industrial Medical Complex had finally realized that the truth was about to come out that they'd been sitting on the cure for decades, and they needed to go public with it to stave off the inevitable backlash.

Cataclysm & Aftermath

Sam's first instinct was to rush over and make sure Savine was okay, at least, once he got his own feet underneath him. Looking over the glass, he reassured her. "Okay, I know it hurts, but none of the cuts are deep--you should be fine in a little while." Her head shakes, indicating that she can't hear him, but then she nods, managing a quick "OK" gesture with her hand.

Then people start shouting about the bus outside, and Sam looks torn for a moment before Savine manages a weak smile. "Go on, Samuel, be a Big Damn Hero, or whatever." He gives her a relieved smile and nods, dashing out into the storm a bit behind Benny.

Task 1 (Putting out the Flames): 1 success
As he gets outside and looks at the chaos, he realizes that there's two threats, here--first the obvious danger of the bus; second, the panic of the mob. His police training kicks in, and he makes improvised use of the first to counter the second. Grabbing two of the closest passersby by their collars, he puts all the effort he can into projecting authority over the thunderous rainfall.

"YOU! Grab those trash cans! Open the tops. Soon as one's at least half full, both of you work together and tip it into the flames--set it upright, and grab the next one. Do that until the flames are out--that's an order!" Amazingly, they do it, getting to work on putting out the flames.

San Diego/Freshly Juiced Dragon
December 22, 2098/Night

Rio went over to the counter to refill her eggnog. It was pretty good. She turned back to the room, eyeing the others here. What was she doing here? They were basically strangers passing by every morning. She barely even knew them. None of them knew the real her.

Fuck. She was just getting the holiday blues again. She missed her abuelita. Her mother the crack whore could burn in hell, and who knew where her prison bitch father was. But her abuelita, the one person who kept her on the relatively straight and narrow, had died last year. This was her first Christmas without her, and she felt the loneliness keenly.

Rio downed her eggnog. “Needs rum,” she muttered.

And then the world turned upside down. Rio found herself flung off her feet, tossed into the air as the very ground threw her. She twisted, her hand catching the edge of the counter, pushing her away, before she broke her back by landing on the edge. With a surprising amount of catlike grace, she managed to land on her feet.

“Whoa! How did I do that?” she muttered.

And then the bowl of eggnog came down on her head.

“Aiiiieeee!” Rio exclaimed in a wail as she was soaked with the creamy beverage.

Chaos started to settle into some kind of order in the aftermath, even as the ground still shook behind them. There were fires outside, and rain poured down. The cop was injured, but Stones was helping him. Savine was injured, too, but she managed to pull herself together. Someone yelled something about a bus, and Rio looked outside to see a city hoverbus crashed and collapsed.

Rio ran outside. The heavy rain washed away the egg nog, making her t-shirt cling to her curves, her hair hang in strings on her face. She surveyed the situation and noticed her Dodge Charger nearby. It had been shoved onto the sidewalk and the car alarm was going.

Rio ran over to the bus where Benny was trying to get people out of the bus and Sam was trying to put out the fires. Rio ran to the back of the bus and yanked on the emergency door. It was jammed.

“Fuck!” Rio screamed at the down pouring sky. She ran over to her car and opened the trunk, grabbing the backpack she kept back there. She had a set of tools, and the first aid kit would come in handy. So would the flashlight, with the power out. She paused and eyed the shotgun. Instead, she grabbed her nine out of the glove compartment and shoved it into the back of her jeans. It might come in handy when the looting started. She’d grab the shotgun later.

Running over to the back of the bus again, Rio pulled out the flashlight and the tools, working on getting the emergency door open.

Juno's lived in California long enough to have 'earthquake reflexes.' The moment the ground starts to move, she slips down in her seat and drops under the table. A few seconds later the big TV attached to the wall over her table crashes down with a shower of sparks and shards of glass. After that, things are moving fast. The ground hasn't even stopped moving when people start stumbling around the juice bar. Savine's cry tugs her attention, but she sees Benny over there and decides to keep her attention on...

CRASH!

The impact of the hoverbus outside steals the breath from her lungs for a second, and all she can do is stare. Then old reflexes, hammered into her by training and action, kickstart her and she runs out the doors to the hoverbus, only a few strides behind Rio. As she fetches tools and starts loosening the bus door, Juno jumps up onto the bus' side, already slick in the soaking rain, and shouts over the din, "No time! Cover your face!"

Then she punches down into the long vertical window set into the door.

A fist of flesh would probably have been shattered long before the glass was. Whatever was left would be sliced to ribbons by the broken chunks of glass.

Juno's fist crashed through the glass, and she brushed away the bigger, more dangerous shards so that they fell inside, away from Rio. The nice, fancy fleshtone covering got scratched up some, but the hand and wrist were otherwise fine. She felt around until she found the release lever, then grunted as she twisted it. Pneumatics hissed, and the doors went loose in the frame.

The former soldier gave Rio a nod and said, "Gimme hand getting everyone outta here!" Then she ducked into the bus. A panicking mother held out her child, and Juno scooped her up with her cyberarm and slung the crying youngster over her shoulder. With her free hand she then pulled the mother up out of the seat and pulled her to the door.

In the meantime she eyed the fire and shook her head slowly. Not enough time for all these people...not unless that fire went out.

Roll = 4 Successes
Science is 1d10+2, -2 for complication, +2 for Rio's card, +2 from earlier Conflicted

Ven was quiet, sitting in the corner away from the low-key holiday celebration at the Dragon. He'd barely touched the virgin nog Benny had whipped up for him, but sobriety wasn't the source of his introspection, or at least not directly.

What was that Oppenheimer quote? Not "I have become Death ...," the other one.

Ven twists the long black cylinder on the table -- a padded case, about four feet long, like what an architect or artist would use to transport a roll of holostatic film. It wasn't an art project or building blueprint inside, though. Hell, it wasn't what was inside that was valuable (although as old swords go, the Honjo Masamune was plenty valuable). The real diamond in the rough, concealed on half a dozen wafer-thin sheets of quantum data-film, was 2.67 petabytes of materials research Ven had downloaded about an hour before security walked him out of the company he'd founded. His life's work, thus far -- along with the life's works of a couple of hundred researchers nearly as brilliant as himself.

"Science is not everything, but science is very beautiful."

True enough, but that wasn't the one he was thinking of, either.

Oh, that's right: "It is perfectly obvious that the whole world is going to hell. The only possible chance that it might not is that we do not attempt to prevent it from doing so."

The nihilist that lurked in Ven's id and emerged when he was good and bent on drugs had always liked that one.

He'd thought maybe do something useful with all this stuff, without his partners and shareholders and government regulators and spies from the Sino-European multinationals around to fuck it all up. But as he'd grappled with what, exactly that something useful might be, Ven had become more and more convinced that the X factor most likely to fuck it all up was Ven.

"I can make it clearer; I can't make it simpler." Better to drive a ways up Highway 1 and drop it in the ocean, he thinks, finally, maybe, at peace with the decision.

"Benny, thanks for the nog man but I've got ..."
The broken pieces of Ven's mug are vibrating on the floor like Mexican jumping beans, and there's a blank spot in his memory between pushing up from his chair and lying on the floor in the corner with one of Benny's longboards embedded in the wall about six inches over his head.

Blank spots, of course, are nothing new, but Ven's pretty sure he's been clean for a while, and surely Benny wouldn't have mickeyed the drinks with anything that strong ... then something crashes, loud outside, and Ven realizes the buzzing in his ears is people shouting as everything more or less goes to hell.

"Hey, you guys, maybe we better head outside before the aftershocks ..."

Ven trails off as he takes in the scene -- Thomas, wounded; Savine, too. Everybody rushing around, then the ladies rushing outside, where a bus seems to be on fire.

Fire. Fuck. Fuck.

Ven's scrambled brain tries to sort itself out. Think. Think. Fire.

His eyes fall on the black cylinder and he snatches it up, starts moving to the kitchen as a plan starts to form. The nylon strap gets hung up on a table leg and he goes down again, yanks it free and fumbles it over his head and shoulder, staggering on.

In the kitchen he grabs a heavy canvas sack from a bottom shelf in the pantry, staggers back out with it.

"Benny, where's that t-shirt cannon? Benny?" Ven looked outside and saw the Dragon's proprietor pulling at the doors of the burning bus, which looked ready to explode any minute.

"Oh, goddammit goddammit. Goddamm ..." The utility closet. He'd seen Benny put it there after the Halloween hula contest.

With the sack over one shoulder, Ven grabs the pneumatic cannon and heads outside, just in time to see Juno punch her way into the bus and start off-loading passengers.

They're not gonna make it, he thinks. Not with that fire ...

Scooping a fistful of powder from the sack into the launcher, Ven suddenly laughs as a memory from kindergarten surfaces. Mrs. Henderson, his teacher, asking the class what they wanted to be when they grew up.

"I wanna be a firefighter!" little Ven had said.

So let's fight some fires.

POOF! A cloud of sodium bicarbonate -- baking soda -- erupts from the launcher. Swirling over the flames, the salts release a cloud of carbon dioxide that pushes the oxygen out of the immediate vicinity, smothering the fire.

DECEMBER 22nd, 2098 - Monday, San Diego, California, Freshly Juiced Dragon - Juice Bar Xmas Party & The Coming of the Rifts!

DAY ONE / DRAMATIC TASK / ROUND TWO

ABOARD THE USS TICONDEROGA

In the event of a Nuclear Strike on America (in fact anywhere in the entire North American Alliance, Mexico, Canada and the USA) the USS Ticonderoga is under orders (SOP, Standard Operating Procedures) to head out to sea, immediately, and she does. Post Haste. The Submersible Aircraft Carrier pulls out of port and heads deeper into the bay, away from San Diego. Captain Karl Dobson, the ranking officer and Captain of the USS Ticonderoga orders the ship out to sea. His second in command, Commander Britchtree orders the radio officer to call all off shore members of the submersible carrier to get back ASAP.

Captain Dobson looks over at his XO, "I will not wait. I do not care who is who, if this is WWIII I will not wait, we head out now!"

Commander Britchtree conceals her thoughts of the civilian population, and one surfer in particular, and turns to look at her Captain, "Sir! I am merely recalling our forces to the ship...maybe none will make it back, but it does not hurt to try, Sir."

"Very well. But I will not wait. Hurry Commander."

The comms officer broadcast to US Naval personnel: "Recall. ASAP. Not a drill."

CHAOS ON SCHLEY STREET AT THE DRAGON

Sgt. Thomas Prosek groans in pain as his Space Cowboy friend Ed slaps a pain patch onto the Naval Cops neck. Holding up a "key" fob Thomas presses a button.

*Chirp Chirp*

"If someone gets a chance to grab the large black hardpack out of my truck, bring it here please!"

The rescue of hover bus civilians is going damned well, the patrons of the Freshly Juiced Dragon apparently are larger than life.

As the patrons of the Dragon set about rescuing others, the downpour of rain suddenly stops and a mere second of calm waifs across the street outside, then as suddenly as the rain stopped, ice shards pelt down.

The rain stops, a momentary calm settles and then is interrupted by ice shards pelting down on those at street level. The power kicks back on, lights flicker and kick back on. A after quake rumbles the scene. Debris scatters and ash and dirt float on the wind. The ground of the FJD and outside is under approximately 12 inches of water now.

There are several more civilians in the bus that should be brought into the FJD for safety and medical attention.

"Recall. ASAP. Not a drill." Sgt Thomas's radio crackles.

"Oh, god." Lifting his radio to his mouth Sgt Thomas gives a sitrep to the comms officer.

YOU HAVE 13 of 16 needed Tokens so far.

Samuel Higgs continues to use his 'cop voice', trying to get additional uninjured passersby to help carry in people from the bus, but sadly, the ice storm causes the few people he managed to wrangle into a triage crew to scatter again. Cursing, he figures the cyborg can probably manage the rest of the rescue, anyway, and starts to head back inside to see if he can be of more use there, when the car parked out front gives the familiar 'chirp chirp' and the trunk pops open. Blinking, he looks inside, and sees a black hardpack--on a hunch, he grabs it and goes inside. "Someone want this?"

Stones looks over to the Sergeant as he delivers a Sitrep. When Thomas is done, Stones asks, "You want us to try and get you back to the Ticondaroga?"

Before Thomas can answer, Stones has grabbed the wet floor mat and threw it over his shoulders and head and headed out into the now ice storm.

Slogging through a foot of water, Stones moved passed the downed vehicles and tried to get a view of the harbor. This water is rising from the bay. We will need to secure suitable drinking water. Sewar systems are certainly backing up.

Heading to Thomas's squad car, Stones grabs the hardpack. Slinging it over his shoulder, he heads towards the front of the vehicle, curious to see if he can get enough power to reposition the vehicle, even if it is not driveable.

Stones heads back inside the Dragon escorting whatever survivors have been retrieved from the downed hover bus and shielding them with the floor mat. His height allowed him to umbrella for a few people, they just had to be able to walk back to the Dragon.

Inside the Dragon, Stones hands Thomas the hardpack. Leaning in close he says, "Not sure we can get you back to your ship."

Stones begins looking to see if Benny has any of the heavy duty water storage containers and begins efforts to sample water quality and purify if necessary.

Seeing that the fire is fully out, Ven drops the t-shirt cannon into the rising water at his feet and slogs back inside the FJD as ice starts pelting the street.

Lights are flashing back on across the street, so either the power disruption was just temporary, or they've got a back-up. Maybe Benny does, too.

Thinking lights, at least, would make it easier to get the bus crash survivors inside and treated, Ven dashes for the breaker box, the long black case looped over his shoulder once again tripping him up and sending him sprawling in the cold water. Dodging the wounded, he vaults over a broken table and makes it into the utility closet where the breakers are.

No amount flipping switches or attempting to short the wires produces results, however, and Ven quickly deduces that the Dragon's electrical system -- which, judging from the state of the wiring, is at least half a century old -- has been slagged.

Some kind of EMP? The newer wiring is hardened against that sort of thing, but this old shit just melted. If we can find a modern vehicle, it should still run.

"Hey, uh, guys. We're not getting the power back on here, so we might need to start thinking about relocating these people. It's gonna be cold, wet and dark here for the foreseeable future."

After offloading the first two in the juice bar, Juno ran back out to the bus to go in again. With the rain stopping, the fire was going to be even more...

FWOOSH

...or that worked. Huh. Juno gave the improvised fire extinguisher a bemused look, then ducked into the bus and started helping people out; staying in the aisle and passing people up to the door where they could get helped out by the others. As she did, she worked her way back through the vehicle, checking each seat to see if anyone might get left behind.

Benny to reroll: 1d8-2 = -1: 1 or 1d6-2 = 3: 5 - if I can use the +2 from Conflicted, I'd like to use it here; including penalty for now though

It was all sort of surreal. Here Benny was lording over the groaning body of Ted Danson or TD for short. His cell phone was dead and Savine... Something was wrong with Savine. ”Savine!! Savine!!” No luck it was like she couldn’t hear him. Ted could though, the ass hat was going on and on about his leg hurting. Benny looked down and saw it was missing. Yeah Ted... That is going to smart. Bone is just not supposed to be hanging like that.

Thomas’ call from the heavenly voice of Birchtree caught him by the balls... Hot and sweaty like. The cantankerous Thomas was trying to give a sit rep but Benny could tell his sweet Angel on the other end needed something more detailed. His night courses at Save-A-Life down the street were about to pay off big time.

Benny called out into the night putting ole Tommy into a sleeper hold so he could rest and Benny could take over. ” Ease yourself Tommy, Benny is here. Shhh... Shhh... Birchtree, you sound like a babe.” Someone dropped an injured passenger at his feet. Was that Juno or Ven? I get them confused... Might have just been a complete stranger. Must be the cancer. His hands dove into the body apply pressure to staunch a head wound.

The radio crackled with the Divine femine voice. Dreamy... Sounds like she is singing that old song. Ava Maria.

Benny clicked the radio while Thomas drooled a bit, ” Hey Babe... We got some wounded here. I got a kid in my hands bleeding out, but I ripped the bottom part of my shirt and tied it tight round the wound just like they do in those old holo flicks... Say Babe do you like to Holo?”

The radio crackled with the sweet, although not soft voice of Birtchtree. Oh man... Definitely in love.

Benny clicked the radio gently slapping thomas’ hand away as the officer started to come arround. ” Babe, its real bedlam out here. We got a bus on fire, and folks coming into the Dragon Juicer. Seems like it is the only thing still standing. When we going to meet back up babe?”

Benny looked down at Thomas and smiled giving him a sly wink. ” Tommy is about too, looks like there are more folks needing a hero. Be right back babe see you in a few.” Radio burned with Birchtree’s musical voice. I love a good seranade.

Benny took off into the fire surfing the flames with nothing but his will power. He found a pair of kittens trapped in a their cat carrier. He glanced at the crate’s tag with a cocked eye. Yln and Hegh, surfs on. He noticed that the two kittens had some smoke inhalation and fur was smoking hot. ” I got you guys. I also know a commander that loves kittens. Lets get you all right.

Monday, December 22, 2098/Night

“Well, I guess that will do it,” Rio said as Juno just smashed in the windows and yanked off the door after all her careful work on the lock. Rio packed up her kit and helped the passengers out of the bus. “Head to the Dragon,” she told those that could walk.

With everyone out safely, and the fire put out, Rio made a trip back to her car and popped the trunk. She pulled out the duffel bag that contained her shotgun and shells and slung it over her shoulder as she walked back to the Dragon pelted by ice.

“What the fuck is this weather?” Rio exclaimed as she ducked inside, shaking ice out of her hair. “What’s the plan now? Can anyone get through to 911? Some of these people need real medical attention.” She looked down at an elderly Hispanic woman.

“It will be alright, abuelita,” she tried to reassure her.

“I’ve got a car still seems to work, but it won’t hold a lot. Three, maybe four people, if we squeeze them. We can get them to the hospital.”

Gravely looks up from those he is attending to and in a very calm voice says, "The nearest hospitals are about a 5 minute drive from here. One, Sharp Coronado Hospital, is due west of here across the Coronado Bridge with who knows what kind of congestion. That hospital sits on an island that is likely under more than a foot of water. Which we have here."

Q3 2019 GM Post 9
Image
DECEMBER 22nd, 2098 - Monday, San Diego, California, Freshly Juiced Dragon - Parties over, its The Coming of the Rifts!

DRAMATIC TASK (no need for a third round) Results are an overwhelming success. All 16 bus crash survivors are rescued and brought into the Freshly Juiced Dragon. Milling about in the Dragon, thankfully the 16 are not injured much beyond minor scrapes and bruises. Several are scared and crying, the others are in a state of quiet shock and look to others for direction.

A WORLD GONE MAD

Ed nods at the idea of rushing to a hospital then looks at Thomas as the Navy cop gets a message on his radio-phone.

The radio-phone that Sgt. Thomas Prosek holds crackles, "Wait! Are you telling me Sgt. Prosek that Benny is there with you! Never mind how I know him! I am on my way. In fact, I am bringing a few Marines, Barak, and will come to you. Get to high ground, a massive tidal wave is coming, not one Benny can surf, a massive wave that will likely flood all of San Diego. I need you Sergeant, as per Senator Beverly Prosek's orders and Benny and whoever else is there to get to safety. On our way, out!"

Thomas looks at the radio-phone and shakes his head, "Barak? Hell this will be interesting." Louder Thomas yells out, "Help is coming people, we need to get to the roof!" Opening the black, long hard case, Thomas uses the bio-metric sensors and the case pops open. Removing a long rifle, a Navy M400x3 assault rifle with scope, he slings it over his shoulder.

Savine looks lost. Rubbing her ears she wanders about looking at the destruction and slogging through the ever raising water. She looks to be in a state of mental shock.

Ed Rezik, the Space man pilot, helps Thomas up off the table and helps the cop walk, putting an arm over his shoulder, towards the back of the juice bar to where the hatch and latter to the roof are located, on the way he calls out, "Lets go. Until we can be rescued it is up to us to save our fellow survivors and stay safe. We have to be strong! Lay down and die or stand and survive! To the roof as Thomas says."
Free Edge Reward wrote:Lay down and die or stand and survive!: Every Player Character (not Rio or Sam) gets a free Edge.

Survivors Edge: Pick one Edge that would make sense for you to have and take it now for free. This Edge is Permanent, like a free Advance. There should be some reward for being a Survivor of the Coming of the Rifts and keeping your cool and saving others!

Sam, Rio... you'll see why you don't get this in just a second. Everyone else this free edge is like a second free human edge when you built your character. I am willing to be very giving on what it is, just try to make it be reasonable. Only thing I ask, no Edges that are magic or Psi in nature for now. Later in game if you think you want to be a magic or Psi user we can talk about it. Thanks.

THE PSYCHIC SCREAM

Simultaneously Rio, Sam and Lukas collapse. Landing on the flooding floor of the Dragon, they act unaware they are laying in the raising cold water of the San Diego Bay as they flail about like they are having a seizure in tandem. A scream emits from their open mouths, not a scream of pain, or terror. It is a scream only they can truly understand, an exploding of consciousness. Too many signals coming in at once, a ripping open of one’s mind, a light speed exploding of their perception. A change in their realities and an understanding that they are now able to use their minds more than before.

Those in the Dragon bar witnessing this display see that Lukas, Rio and Sam are unaware that they will likely drown if left be and everyone can hear a screaming from outside. As if tens of thousands of people across the globe suddenly screamed at once, which is exactly what happened.

World Scry activates for the trio newly unleashed Psychics while they are having this Psychic Scream, which only they who are having the Scream know.

Though they have never seen it, they are able to feel a line of power surging across San Diego about 2 miles away. They can sense more lines of power rage across the world. As if the entire series of blue lines that twist and crisscross across Earth are all mapped out in their minds, places where these line cross each other, Blue Zones, glow brighter in the supernatural map in their minds. Though the image will fade quickly the tens of thousands of human and… other… voices in their minds are screaming for the next four minutes. In the future, no matter where you might be, Rio and Sam, you have a d4 to recall this world map of Ley Lines and their locations. But note, Ley Line locations do change a lot from Chaos Earth to Rifts Earth times.

Shaken and overly aware of things that are present in the area, unseen by their eyes, but known to be here, ramble around in this new third eye that sees too much.

Lukas, Rio and Sam can sense an open dimensional portal about a 60 feet to the east of the Dragon bar, outside somewhere, close. Instinctively they know it is there and what it is, a portal from another reality to Earth. Coming out of it are dimensional beings not native to Earth.

Major Psionic Edge and Master Psychic Edge open to Lukas, Rio and Sam, two Permanent free Edges.

Samuel Higgs now has access to Uncanny Insight (Divination) and the Mega Power version from Savage Rifts. For the next 24 hours he can also use Rio’s and Lukas's power. No Power Points (ISP) are needed to activate any of the powers for next 24 hours. After that can only use your own power and as per normal, Savage Rifts rules.

Maria "Rio" Taina Mendoza has access to A Little Bit of Luck (Boost Trait) and the Mega Power version from Savage Rifts. For the next 24 hours she can also use Sam’s and Lukas's power. No Power Points (ISP) are needed to activate any of the powers for next 24 hours. After that can only use your own power and as per normal, Savage Rifts rules.

Lukas Constantine Smith now has access to Run and Hide (Speed) and the Mega Power version from Savage Rifts. For the next 24 hours he can also use Sam's and Rio’s power. No Power Points (ISP) are needed to activate any of the powers for next 24 hours. After that can only use your own power and as per normal, Savage Rifts rules.

*** be aware Rio and Sam, as GM, I may have odd effects happen anytime you use PSI powers over next 24 hours.

INCOMING HAVOC

Shadow, the K9, is standing at the front doors of the juice bar and starts barking. Another source of screams erupts from the bus survivors as they witness a nine foot tall red skinned humanoid demon standing in the street outside the broken glass window doors of the Dragon bar. Straight out of hell the tall skinny creature drools and it looks in at those assembled inside the FJD.
The Creature
The Demon Outside wrote:Image
As it steps closer to the Dragon bar the bus survivors scream more, and then a explosion of machine gun fire erupts outside. Three men wearing black T shirts and leather with Lost Skeleton gang images on their attire race in on the demon, on foot. Shooting rifles at it. Slashing the melee weapon the red skinned creature wields, one Lost Skeleton man is cleaved in half, lands in the raising water and dies.

As a downpour of blackish white snow falls outside the other two gun men continue shooting at the demon with little effect. Distracted, for now, the demon turns on the men.

Shadow runs towards Sgt. Thomas barking still.

Your posts can be:
  • Reactions to whats going on around you.
  • Make your way up to the roof. Unless you have another plan. Thomas is trying to get you all to high ground as the Navy is on their way to pick you up.
  • I did not think it likely that you would, however this is your story and I will not stop you if you decide to engage the demon outside tell me in the OOC area and we can start a combat, just note...it is easily dispatching the Lost Skeletons outside, and somehow I just don't see you rushing out there, but hell if you want to go for it. Edit: Yeah, lol, some of you ARE going to be in combat soon. So cool.
  • Whatever else you think you would be doing.
  • Sam and Rio need to get ride of Shaken to do more than just post their thoughts, if they are going to start moving and doing they need to get ride of that Shaken. Lukas stays Shaken for this next turn, failed roll. So, use a Benny or make that Spirit Roll to get ride of Shaken.
Oh, and pick your Free Survivors Edge / or, add your new edges Sam and Rio, to your character sheets. In your post in a OOC tag let me know what you picked please.
  • Next GM Post will be as soon as you all post something. Thanks!

EDIT:

Consider this post a deceleration of your intent / plan. Example: Benny is going to fight the demon. Juno may say she wants to rescue her Dad but will first stay and help Benny fight demon. Another PC may say, nope not fighting, I will be making my way to roof. If we splinter up its okay, I'll get you regrouped.

Benny saw Savine struggling, he sort of yelled trying to get her attention, ” Savine! Savine!!!”. Benny looked around at the rest of the shops Patrons, not so much to see if anyone was alive because meh, but more to just grin taking in all the bedlam. ” Ven! You ok man? We need to get my sticks to the roof!”

After a futile glance at his backup phone Benny sighed. Well... Better get folks up on the roof. Babe is coming...

Ted Danson gnarled hand grabbed Benny knocking him out of his righteous dream date with Commander Birtchtree. The sleezeball surfer he was groaned pointing at something. The pair of kittens in the car carrier he had hissed. Benny shook his head in mild disgust, some folks freaked and some folks held their shit together. Even some of my friends lost their shit.

Ted groaned again pointing behind Benny. ” Damn Ted take it easy... Thomas where you at? Help me get Ted and these folks up to the roof. I am pretty sure I can surf a ten class wave, but the rest right?” Benny glances at the high roof of the juice shop. He had built a 40ft roof for good reason it appeared.

Ted groaned again his eyes went wide with fear. The kittens shook with fright. Benny turned and saw the ugliest looking sailor he had even seen. He laughed, not too loud or too soft, ” Damn son, looks like your mother beat you with an ugly stick then dumped you in that same shit The Jokes guy fell into.” It seemed the worst things got the easier it was for Benny to relate. He loved adrenaline and surfing a reckless wave.

Benny Friggin Gumbo or BFG known to some handed off the kittens to Ted and rolls him as he unwrapped his Ninja 9000 portable juicer, ”Ted, go grab Savine... Get her upstairs to the roof. Those kittens are for my sweet sultry babe Birtchtree. She’ll be around in a sec.”

Benny glanced down at the charge of the ninja 9000. 82.5% we are in business He kinda ran towards the demon thing spinning up its blades yelling, ” Time to get mildly messed Bra!” Benny had seen the commercials for this portable juicer. If it could Juice a dragon it could Juice a demon.

Note: Taking the brave edge.

Hearing about high spots, Stones first thought was Hot Springs Mountain, easily the highest point in San Diego County. Not entirely certain that the Ticaonderoga could naigate to that location, Stones began calculating a ten foot rise and the next safest spot.

"US Naval Medical Center almost due North of here. Its in a series of hills above the city. We move everyone that direction. Should also be able to get a good view of the flooding and be far enough that the main waves shouldn't reach them for a an hour or so."

"Just head north past Chicago Park and grab the Eye 5. When the road begins rising into the foothills make sure to stay right."

Then he hears Benny

Back in the stock room, Stones began pulling out 33 gallon black garbage bags from a box labeled "Hefty - Now Reinforced with Celestial Steel". Pulling a spare pairing knife from the back room, Stones cut one side of each trash bag creating a poncho for each survivor.

@Lars "Sergeant, hope you have something other than regular shells in that rifle. Either way let's get you positioned topside."

Heading to the back, Stones should the survivors the way to the roof top, which Stones remembered was actually walled and covered. Damn Benny. Really nice place. Where did you come up with the money for this place and the Juicer?

As survivors were making their way to the roof top, Stones looked over and realized that there were people not moving. Counting the survivors, fourteen bus plus two kittens, Prosek, Rizik, and Shadow. It was then that he realized that those were Juice Bar party guests. Those guests were face down in the rising water.

"Benny, I am going to be a minute or two."

If he can manage it, he moves @Sam Higgs and @Lars Lukas as well.

In his belt is a sheathed santoku knife possibly from a set Benny had acquired a while back. It was in the back room and looked useful.

Round 0

Having grabbed all her gear from her car, Rio returned to the dragon where the survivors of the bus crash milled about. None seemed to need the hospital, at least immediately. Then the call came from the Navy to get to high ground and prepare for pickup.

Bueno,” Rio said. “Sorry, Benny, but I’m robbing you, chico.” She went over to the counter and pulled a tool from her kit to pop the lock on the register. She grabbed all the cash inside and shoved it into her pockets. “We may need the cash.”
Greedy Hindrance
How much cash does Rio get? Not sure it will be worth anything, but she doesn’t know that yet.
“We’ll get your dad, Juno. How far? Maybe you can take Sam’s bike and grab him?”

Leaving the register empty, Rio started to head toward the stairs with the rest heading for the roof. That is when Rio’s brain exploded. She screamed as pain like she’d never felt before ripped through her mind. Her body flailed in seizure as she fell thrashing into the water. She felt power, and her mind ripped from her body, flying up, watching a line of blue energy lance through San Diego. Then she was higher, seeing more blue lines, and where they crossed, roiling centers of blue power. They crisscrossed the country -- no, the world. Holes seemed to open in the blue lines and...things came through, strange, unnatural things, demons and monsters, the nightmares of her abuelita’s stories, the monsters under her bed as a child, the devils from the Dia de los Muertos.

It seemed to last forever, but then Rio’s eyes fluttered open and she found herself staring up at Stone. She coughed up water, her clothing soaked and sticking to her body. Que… she asked. “What’s happening…”

And then she heard gunshots and a bisected body landed in the water next to her. She gave a little shrief and scrambled away, her head throbbing, and looked to see Benny and some Lost Skeleton boys fighting one of the demons she’d seen come out of a nearby rift.

“They’re coming…” Rio said, wide-eyed, to Stone. She was starting to sound like Lukas. “The monsters...demons… We need to get out! Benny! Get away from that thing!” she screamed at the juice bar owner as she scrambled to her feet.

Rio felt her nerve endings surge as she accessed new abilities she didn’t know she had.
Loyalty Hindrance
Rio will stay and try and get Benny out of there. She sees they aren’t doing any damage to that thing with bullets. Then she will try and get to the roof.

Sam is about to guide Savine towards the door when the Scream hits, knocking him flat into the water. Consciousness adrift from his own body, he follows the pulsing line of energy up, up and up again, until he sees it connect with others, and then still others, an intersecting lattice of raw, psychic power. In the terror and awe of the vision, one elated thought bubbles up through him. I knew it... all connected. This is how They have been controlling everything.

He tries, desperately, to map it out, but there's so much, he only gains fragments. Still, now that I've seen it.... I can find it again, I'm sure.

A moment later, he's coughing and sputtering, back in his body, as Stones is lifting him out of the water. He stands up. "S'okay, I'm okay, man." He looks around, shaking his head clear and spitting out some of the water that got in. "Where is..." He sees Savine being taken upstairs by Ted, and remembers the wave is coming--though it's hard for him to say if he saw it during the vision, heard it from the radio while in shock, or both. He's about to follow everyone else up when he realizes Benny's dashed out the front door armed with... a juicer? Good lord, he's crazier than me and Lukas put together. Or maybe not. Speak his language.

Pulling his old service pistol, he heads out to be next to Benny. "Dude, you know better than that! Hard fruit like that has to be pounded a bit before you can juice it. Let the wave that's coming pulverize it, then when it comes up to the roof, we can finish it off!"

Robbing me? I’ve been robbing the patrons of the The Dragon Juicer for years. With prices of 20.00 to 43.85 for a full 16oz of juice Benny had been coasting off of Dragon’s fruit pungent allure for years. How else could his place have a 40ft high ceiling and roof top deck as secure as they could come? Benny grinned at @Maria Mendoza’s apology. She had been a hard chica to look up in the book. Normally she went by Rio but he was almost certain her name was Maria. However he was not sure how many people paid in cash these days. Credit chip seemed more in favor, but who knew he did have a pair of busy body old ladies that came every morning for their colon cleanse. Maybe they paid in cash.

@Ven Nealson seemed to have Benny on hold which was fine there was nothing else he liked more than call waiting music. Ven... Keep those people safe. All those years of listening about conspiracy this or that may have influenced Benny to go all out with his roof top deck. At the moment Benny was regretting to not have sprung for the bullet proof security sliders and everyman’s apocalyptic food storage trunk. If Benny had a weakness it was his proclivity to stay up late watching channel 3312 and their constant stream of infomercials. Oh yeah, and brain cancer... Don’t forget that weakness... Benny also had a drive to surf the meanest wave yet. The Birtchtree Tidal sounded like the ultimate party wave. Hopefully @Ven Nealson threw down some sticks or it would be the quietest ride ever.

Benny let the portable ninja juicer roar to life. Damn battery is down to 65% @Sam Higgs was running beside him cheering him on! ” You got it Sam man. Lets ride the tidal... First though I need a new stick. I am thinking big and ugly, who has seen to many nuclear winters will be moderately perfect.”. Benny glanced down at his other hand to check... ” Hey Sam... If something bad happened does that mean cells don’t work?”

Juno's reply to Rio died out as several people in the bar, Rio included, convulsed and screamed. Everything was happening too fast, and all she could think about was that if it was this FUBARed here, she HAD to get home! Thank God other bargoers saw to the ones who fell over.

And then this...this...monster outside?! Jesus Christ what was going on?!

"Sam!" she shouted over the din. "Make sure everyone gets to the roof! Don't even try to fight that...thing...God only knows what it is! But I need your bike! I have to get home to my dad and try to get him out! You got a key or a combination or something for it?"

Ven was sure that everything had gone to shit, but then, inexplicably, it gets even shittier. The water rises. Then Sam and Rio and Lukas start screaming their heads off before flopping down into the water like epileptic dolphins.

And dolphins still gotta breathe, don't they, he thinks, as an episode of that old show, Cosmos, flashes into his memory.

Benny's screaming at him, or talking normally, he can't really tell. Running outside with a juicer where there's a demon -- like, an actual Dungeons and Dragons demon -- going at it with a couple of gang-bangers with submachine guns.

Lot to unpack here, he thinks, the thought a feeble attempt at fighting off the crushing wave of mental paralysis threatening to squash his brain stem like a ton of bricks.

It's like fucking Amsterdam all over again, when that crazy Brit talked me into jumping the fence at the zoo.

Reflexively, Ven starts fumbling in his pocket for a lighter, subconsciously reaching for a smoke, or a hit of something more powerful. Instead his fingers close on the 60-day sober chip his sponsor gave him last week.

Easy does it.

Of all the bullshit mantras they'd taught him in rehab, that was the one that had stuck. Easy does it. One step at a time.

First: Drowning is bad.

Seeing Stones grab Rio, Ven snags Sam and then Lukas and hauls them up out of the water, pushing them toward the stairs and the others heading for the roof.

"Get upstairs! Everyone, get to the highest point. Pickup is on the way, but we've got to ride out the wave first."

Second: Demons are bad, too.

"Benny! Get your ass back here and up on the roof or the only sticks you'll need are for your fucking casket! That's a goddam demon man, or some kind of milspec mutant that's even worse! Unless that's a +3 holy juicer, it's not gonna do anything but give it a raspberry!."

As he stumbles towards the stairs, the case on Ven's back -- the one carrying the Honjo Masamune and the concealed data discs -- bangs on the wall.

What are the odds a 900-year-old samurai sword does something to it? I mean, I paid enough for the thing ...

Ven turns, images of the sword blazing up with holy fire in his mind ... then he turns and runs up the stairs, hoping to buy some more time.

Who am I kidding? The last time I swung a sword was in a video game, and I don't think that thing gives half a squat who got the high score in Bushido Blade 13.

Taking Calculating for my advance.

Sgt. Thomas, still slowed down by a leg injury grabs onto the ladder that leads up to the Freshly Juiced Dragon's roof. Holding onto the ladder for stability he slides the rifle off his shoulder and hands it to Ed Rezik, then grabs one of the hover bus crash survivors and yells, "Start climbing! Up you go, we got a rescue inbound but need to get up on the roof! Go, go, go."

Savine, still unable to hear, sees Thomas's actions and starts guiding the other survivors towards the ladder. Moving that way she also grabs her purse and slings it over her shoulder.

Lukas runs out of the front door with inhuman speed, turns away from the creature and runs through the water away from view fleeing the area.

Shadow, the K9, barks and runs towards the exit of the FJD. Rushing out into the water logged, flooding, icy cold front street area next to Benny. The Dog barks at the the demonic looking creature wielding a spear and moves along next to the Dragon bar owner.

Ed, the spaceman and new holder of the title "traveled faster than any other human ever has" with his recent round trip to Mars and back holds the rifle handed to him and grimaces. After just a moment he sets his determination and sighs as he spins and runs from the rear of the building towards the front doors, looking like a trained soldier as he runs with the rifle, and moves towards the exit of the Dragon in order to get a clear shot at the monster outside. Ed grumbles, "Gotta kill this mother frumper outside before we go rescuing anyone else!"

The two hover biker gang members outside are not fairing well, the one is sliced in half by the spear the creature is using, the other turns and runs back to his hover bike and looks to be fleeing.

Swooping in from above a large troop transport arrives, hovering over the street outside and adjacent the Dragon bar. US NAVY is painted in white on the ship and a loud speaker bellows, "Thomas? Benny! Om my god...get out there and save h..them!"

As Benny wades through the knee high water outside he will recognize the voice of Commander Belle Birtchtree.

Details for Barak

From the Ticonderoga to the Streets of San Diego

Barak, Commander Britchtree as you know is the XO, of the USS Ticonderoga, the ship you were on. She rushes towards the gunship on the deck of the submersible carrier with a pilot and she sees you, "Barak! I'm short handed will you please come with me to rescue some civilians and other Navy personnel?"

The gunship rockets away from the USS Ticonderoga and you hear on the radio, "Commander, make this fast! I am pulling the Ticonderoga out and away from San Diego!"

The Commander responds, "Aye Captain!"

The Commander tells Barak that a second gunship is coming, with soldiers, but she didn't want to wait for it, telling you she received a radio message from a US Naval K9 cop who was calling for immediate assistance in town.

Arriving over the flooded streets of San Diego bay, lightning, thunder, ice rain and frigid cold wind are nothing compared to the sight of a massive blue glowing line of power (Ley Line) streaking across the bay, or the sight of the red skinned monster below that looks like it is going to attack some civilians.

You are able to exit and engage the action outside as you see fit.
What are you doing survivors?

GM Note
Unless I am mistaken, the only Characters who have MDC (Heavy) weapons are Barak and Ed. Just a reminder ... granted no one really knows that the creature is a MDC creature ... - Lars

Intimidate 1d8: 5
Wild Intimidate 1d6: 4
If successful, he Distracts the Demon (-2 to all actions until the end of its next turn)
Samuel gets a good look at the demon outside, and shudders, glancing down at the pop-gun in his hand (at least, that's what it feels like right now) with a bit of derision. No way this thing injures that creature when those gangbangers couldn't put a scratch on it. Still, it's all I've got at the moment, and Benny's gonna get himself killed if that thing gets ahold of him.

Letting out a roar that he learned bouncing for clubs while he waited for his PI license to clear, Sam jumps up onto the closest tree-planter outside the Dragon Juicer and fires a shot at the thing's head--not to injure, but to hopefully get the thing to react defensively.

Babylonian. Hindi. Mayan. Templar.

Stones tries to recall the mythology that described the demon outside the juice bar.

"There were some civilizations that proposed that it was possible to banish a demon if you know its name. Though there was also some disputes on whether it was necessary for a ritual banishment. Save me its spear or maybe its head or some such. It would be something to study."

Sam Man has my back and Stoney needs a spear.
With enthusiasm settle between rabbid baseball fan and That of a fan of the old earth 2018 phenoix suns NBA basketball team Benny sort of ran at the Demon treading water of some slick surfer moccasins.

He sort of shouted up to his heavenly lady, “ Birtch baby, get those people on the roof, Juno needs to get to her father! Pick me and Sam up after I make this guy into my afternoon special... Dragon juicer sucker!”

He tried to clamber onto the monstrosity and juice whatever he could. ” What is up dude? Do you Juice?”. An honest question and one Benny kinda wanted to find out. In the back of his mind he kinda hoped Ven dropped a few sticks. Because as he thoughout about it, riding a tidal wave would be kinda epic. No way Ted Danson could ride that party wave.

Benny checked the power gauge on the Ninja juicer... 0%
” Sam, I am in trouble!! Did you bring your solar charger???”

Dice Roll Strength and also Attack
Response to Benny trying to force the creature into the portable Juicer.

STRENGTH CHECK VS BENNY 1d8: 5 at -2 from Sam. STR 3

SLASHING MELEE ATTACK AT BENNY 1d6: 3 At - 2 from Sam. ATT 1

...
Narrative response to Benny attacking the creature:

Jumping back from Benny the demon swings it’s savage staff at the man. Stumbling in the more than knee high water the demon grits its long sharp teeth.

The distracting shot from Sam, and now this insane human trying to grab the creature... it backs up from Benny after failing to connect with a slashing movement at the skinny strange human.

Fortifying it’s resolve the creature first growls, then prepares to slash out at the next human to attack it.

Still growling a sort of sonic wave ripples out of its forehead and wavers outward as far as one can see.

Standing up straight and no longer hunched over the demon bursts out in laughter.

In broken, scratchy English the demon growls, “N̴o̵w̴ ̵t̷h̴e̷y̴ ̸c̷o̴m̸e̷.”

Round 1

Spear, huh? Presumably if bullets couldn’t hurt the thing, that spear could. I mean, it wouldn’t carry around anything it couldn’t hurt its own kind with, right?

Rio focused, visualizing the craziness she was about to attempt. She felt something click in her brain, and then squeal in her mind like fingernails on a chalkboard as it failed to connect. Then she went racing out into the water-filled streets at the demon. She made a lunging grab for the spear, but failed to connect.

Ven stumbled onto the rooftop patio with the other survivors, then ran to the railing just in time to see Benny charge the demon with an unplugged juicer.

What the hell is wrong with these people? he thinks, spying the Navy rescue vessel hovering nearby.

As the demon below prepared to strike again, Ven's knees knocked against the hard object mounted against the wicker railing -- one of Benny's surfboards.

"Catch a fucking wave with this, hellboy," Ven mutters, yanking the board free and flinging it over the railing at the demon's head, then following that up with another.

Stones heard Benny curse, a question about power. Guess the Juicer was out of Juice. Stones smiled at his own humor.

As he was relishing his own humor he heard a muffled voice from above. Two surfboards came sailing down out of the night. Near as Stones could tell a cross wind on the street level caught the two surfboards and veered them from their intended target? Guess everyone was getting in the demon fight, sort of.

Double checking the secured and sheathed Santoku Knife, Stones grabbed one of the two surfboards and sent the other one @Benny Gumbo's direction. "Surfs up, Brah."

Looking down at the board he had his foot on and the distance to the demon, Stones decided to make a move on the demon. Screw what the history books said. Its time for Science to have its way with the world.

"May Gaia Guide Me. The Earth Mother Reclaims the Land!"

Running unhindered through the water (Free Runner Edge) with the surfoard held like a six foot long sword, Stones charges the demon. "No One cares if the others are coming. There won't be anything of you left for them to find."

In response to Stones attack on Demon:

The called shot on legs causes Vulnerability to Demon (because I say so, seems fitting). The Medium damage does not effect the MDC (Heavy) Demon.

VULNERABILITY: Actions against the Demon are at +2 until end of its next turn. Pg 100 SWADE.

"Sir," Barak salutes the XO; his presence and position within the military structure was a little odd as somekind of attached specialist, but even so, she didn't to ask his permission. He leaps onto the gunship, nodding to the mostly uncomfortable in his presence personnel.

He looks in astonishment as he sees the effect this strange storm that came out of nowhere was having on San Diego. He had not actually been able to visit; a large blue man with gills tended to garner a lot of attention

As they approach, Barak draws his pistol in anticipation; he hadn't fired a shot in anger yet

What was that thing? Another experiment like him. Either way, this thing was dangerous and needed stopping.

"Drop me down, I'll engage the creature

Provided he is dropped nearby, Barak opens fire with his Ion Pistol

With a loud cry, Juno charges the monstrous thing, cocking her cybernetic arm back as she goes. Each footfall drives plumes of water up around her until she leaps up onto a table, then vaults off of that to go hurtling through the air to slam into its shoulder, where she grabs its misshapen head and drives her artificial hand straight into the demon's left eye socket!

The impact is enough to bounce her back off of it and send her sprawling back onto the ground, nearly losing her footing before she gets her balance back and whirling around to face it!

Rolls: Attacking eye: 7, for 11 damage

Q3 2019 GM Post 13
Image
DECEMBER 22nd, 2098 - Monday
San Diego, California
Freshly Juiced Dragon - The Coming of the Rifts!
Demons attack in the streets of San Diego and oncoming surge of water from bay floods the city!

Recap of Round One
  • Sam shot demon in head.
  • Benny tried to stuff demon in his portable juicer.
  • Demon uses a sonic blast to call for help AND it is distracted (-2) and vulnerable (+2 against it)
  • Rio lunges for spear but fails
  • Ven throws boards down at it but mises
  • Stones grabs a board and uses it like a sword to hit demon
  • Barak exits Gunship and shoots demon with MD gun
  • Juno punches demon with cyber arm right in its eye
  • Savine, poor deaf lovely Savine, starts to head outside but is prompted by Ed to get up to the roof and she complies.
  • Thomas, Naval Cop with a injured leg, gets civilians up the latter to the roof of the FJD and then follows them up.
  • Shadow, the K9, barks angrily at the demon, however is swimming back towards the FJD as the dog cannot walk in so much water.
  • Ed, the Spaceman and pilot takes Thomas's Navy rifle and runs from rear of the FJD to outside.
  • 16 rescued people from hover bus are ushered to roof.
  • Note to Barak: you are aware that on the Gunship there is Commander Birtchtree, a pilot and that's it.

AND NOW...

The large Gunship hovers above the raising waters and turns to position it's rear open cargo hatch so that it is adjacent to the roof of the Freshly Juiced Dragon. A woman's voice echos out of the Gunship's external loud speakers, Benny recognizes Commander Britchtree's soothing voice, "Get into the rear cargo area so we can bug out of here, sensors show a massive ... oh gods, six hundred plus feet tall tidal wave is coming this way! Hurry."

Below, in the ever deepening water covering the street, now roughly 5 feet deep, the red skinned demon looks unsure, distracted and feeling vulnerable from the unexpected assault from these crazy squishy humans. Screaming in demon speech the red demon pumps the spear up and down threateningly in the air until it takes a heavy hit in the back of the head from Barak's shot.

Rushing out the front of the Freshly Juiced Dragon, Ed Rezik climbs up onto the street lamp and aims Sgt. Thomas's rifle at the creature. A triple round burst of heavy laser fire hits the demon in the face. Between Barak an Ed the demon's head is blown away. As the demon sinks into the water it lets go of the spear it was wielding. As the creature slips away under the water, the spear transforms from a weapon to a grapefruit sized orb that floats on the water. It looks like a clear glass like orb with misty clouds inside of it. As the orb floats on top of the water, a portal tears open near the downed hover bus. Then dozens more of small portals rip open and a score of the red demon monsters that resemble the one killed moments ago lean out of the portals looking out at the survivors.

A larger portal opens in the center of the smaller demons. A muscular and bat winged bronze skinned humanoid demon standing over 12 feet tall steps out above the crashed hover bus, followed by the score of smaller 6 foot tall demons looking like the one the group of survivors has been fighting. Assembled on the top of the flooded hover bus the demons take in the sight of the humans. The greater demon, holding a great fiery whip, calls out, "Plinths of Tepeth’saal. Now."

As the horde of demons are about to attack, the greater demon cries out again, "No. Wait." Pointing at the survivors in the water below the greater demon laughs and says, "Protect the orb, or your souls will burn in the pits of Hell."

"Brok?" one of the lesser red skinned demons asks.

"I recognize them."

Jumping back into the portals the demons disappear and the portals close.

Commander Britchtree's voice yells across the loudspeaker, "Lets go our Submersible ship is out at sea leaving and wont wait much longer for us."

Ed drops back into the now five plus feet deep water flooding the street and starts to swim back into the FJD in order to go to the roof and then Gunship, he calls out, "Benny! Guys! Let's go, Juno, I don't see why we cannot swing by your Dad's apartment on our way. We gotta get out of here though if a massive tidal wave is coming. I'm a horrible swimmer."

The older man named Ed proves his point as he frantically splashes his way back inside the juice bar.

Post your response to the events and what you are up to next. I will then get up the next GM post ASAP, it's mostly written already. I stopped my GM post here in an effort to not railroad the story. So post away and then I'll get my post up. You can all head to roof, get into Gunship, interact there or do something else entirely.

Wild Focus 1d6+2 = 8: 6 ACE 1d6+8 = 12: 4

Question: What IS this thing?

Dan: Because of his Trapping for the Power, I'll need to know what the answer is, then I'll post at least snippets of his several minutes of ranting to come to the correct conclusion. :P
Sam knows an important clue when he sees one--immediately, he leaps for the orb, even as the demons start to appear. Of course, this means he takes the demon's directive very personally, and he starts slogging through the churning waters back to the Dragon Juicer, in order to head to the roof, awkwardly climbing the ladder with the orb in his arm.

Once on the chopper, he quickly checks in with Savine, but once assured she made it on safely, he looks down at the orb, concentrating on it, musing over the forms within. "I think I'm beginning to understand..."

San Diego/Freshly Juiced Dragon
Monday, December 22, 2098/Night
Round 0

“Holy shit. Madre de Dios!” Rio said, instinctively crossing herself as the army of demons popped into existence around them. “Fuck the tidal wave. These things want to kill us, too!”

Even as Rio was backing away, the demons were leaving again. Que?” she queried.

Rio was still supernaturally fast somehow, so she zoomed back into the Dragon and up the ladder to the roof, entering the Navy gunship with a whoosh of air, the wind blowing her black hair around her face. Her clothes were soaked and clinging to her body. She looked down and nearly sobbed. “My car…” It was pretty much underwater. At least she’d gotten her gear out, though she was pretty sure she was going to need some rice for her phone and laptop and to dry her clothes.

Ed looks at Maria as she bolts past him to the Gunship, "My Gods, she's like that actress in the recent Vid show, Sandra Moore, the Flash!" *

* in 2096 corporate television remade a show called the Flash, starring a female character who was the Flash, based off a show called the Flash from the early 2000's, just reinventing the show to have a female lead.

In response to Samuel Higgs picking up the Orb and studying it...

The Orb
GM Note: The following is known to Samuel Higgs only until such a time as he explains it to others or another AB sensitive Character touches the Orb.

What Sam does not know is: If a non AB Character has possession, is holding, the Orb they are at +1 to any one roll per turn (per round).

Sam Higgs ... looks down at the orb, concentrating on it, musing over the forms within.

The misty orb is warm to the touch. As Sam concentrates on the orb and asks, What is this thing?

Plinths of Tepeth’saal.

Surprisingly easy to say: Plenths of Tepethsaul. Well, at least in ones mind. Pleths is a young sphere, only a few hundred years old, who has a destiny. The sphere does not actually communicate with Sam in any human way, its more of a feeling, an understanding that the orb is alive on some level, desired to be used by several factions across the 'verse, and it has a feeling of self importance as it will help humanity challenge an evil otherworldly intelligence, in the future. Until that day the orb must survive the many factions that wish to control it or destroy it.

A feeling of, help me I will help you, or simply hide me, enters Sam's mind.

"I think I'm beginning to understand..."

An ancient evil that will surface in the future threatens all of humanity, and another force has sent the Orb to assist humanity. Though the orb is early and must survive long enough to fulfill its purpose.

Sam has a hazy vague understanding of the powers of the Orb, enough so to do the following with it, you can keep the Orb or simply hide it here in the sinking bay, your choice, San Diego is about to be hidden underwater for hundreds of years to come.

Plinths of Tepeth’saal.

As long as a Arcane Background (AB) Character is holding the Orb that AB Character can access the following power 1 time a day. This power is a small echo of the power it will one day be capable of, but that story is in the far future and for another day. If a non AB Character has possession, is holding, the Orb they are at +1 to any one roll per turn (per round).

TELEPORTATION: After a full round of Concentration, at the end of the round it results in teleportation. The Orb can be used by AB Characters to move locations, for themselves and up to eight others. More than eight causes Fatigue, one level per extra person, max is 12 people, to the AB Character using the Orb. Orb can only use its power once per 24 hours, switching AB Characters does not regenerate the power any faster. Teleportation is line of sight (unless using on a Ley Line, see below). Up, down, forward, back, all around, as long as user can see destination. Basically this prevents walking through walls, or into unseen locations.

ANYWHERE: When using the Orb (Anywhere), Roll AB Characters AB Skill to determine how effective the Orb is.
  • Failure = nothing happens and power is used up for the 24 hour period.
  • Success = up to 80 feet.
  • Raise = up to 160 feet.
NEXUS: When using the Orb (At a Nexus Point), Roll AB Characters AB Skill to determine how effective the Orb is.
  • Failure = nothing happens and power is used up for the 24 hour period. 1-50% chance on d100 of opening a Rift and something arriving, per GM fiat (GM decides if anything happens and what happens).
  • Success = Teleport up to 80 miles along Ley Line.
  • Raise = Teleport up to 160 miles along Ley Line, or to termination point if line not that long.
  • Note: Use of the Orb at a Nexus has a chance of accidental dimensional teleportation. 1-25% chance on a d100 of D-Portal if GM desires otherwise GM can elect to open Rift and something arrives.
Note: If somehow I broke the game with this Orb, please let me know and we will fix it. I wrote this off the cuff.

Look forward to everyone else's Posts. Afterwards the next GM post is ready and set to go. Thanks!

Juno had been here before.

Her unit had been behind enemy lines and the enemy had unexpectedly ambushed the main force up front. The jungle around them had suddenly come alive with gunfire and explosions, and they'd been at as much risk from incoming friendly fire as from enemy action. A tense waiting game became utter chaos in a matter of seconds. She'd felt herself freeze up, unable to process, unable to cope.

Then, as now, she kept herself moving by focusing on the objective. Push everything else away. Her body knew how to move, it just needed direction. Today that direction was...

"The roof!" Juno shouted, half-swimming, half-climbing onto a car to help keep herself above water. "Everyone get to the roof!"

She waited there a moment...a precious, unrecoverable moment...to make sure everyone was doing it, then jumped off the car and swam over to the ladder on the side of the building to haul herself up and out...then climb up onto the roof.

It couldn't be this deep at home, she told herself over and over. Benny's place was right next to the beach. Her place was inland a bit. And their apartment was third floor. Dad would be fine (if the earthquake didn't...), he'd be FINE. She'd get him, throw some things into a duffel, and carry him if he couldn't walk today. Up onto the roof.

Stones was glad that he had not gone for the demon's head with the Santoku knife like he had originally planned. The right weapons and the deapon dies just like anything else in this world.

At the retreating demons, he thinks to himself, Come to my world, you are going to be held to the rules of this world.

The water is rising, and the board he had used is now usesless, so he tosses it aside. Grabbing the demon body and the spear, Stones lives up to his nickname and begins moving through the rising water with relative ease. This demon hide should make an excellent set of boots. Hell maybe even a pair of sturdy gloves. And this spear. It should come in quite handy.

@Benny Gumbo "Use that board Benny, we need to go."
Character Note
I am considering going after "Mystic" as an IF.
Mother Earth, Gaia, also Lady Airemeth from the Tuatha De as his influence.
Any thoughts on this as characters develop, please let me know.

Barak keeps his pistol trained on the water, in case the demons return. Doubted he would be able to keep them at bay for long, but at least he could hold the line long enough for the gunship to escape with the civilians.

"Is there anybody else trapped down there?" Barak asks/demands on the groups getting on the gunship. He was anxious to do his part and diving was what he was good at.

Of course, at this point, anybody who looks at him will see a blue man in a US Navy armour.

What the fuck did Benny put in that eggnog?

Ven takes a step back, mentally, trying to consider what's actually going on below. Surfboards and a demon. Then some blue guy in a Navy hardsuit shows up and shoots it with an ion pistol. More demons, spouting Lord of the Rings shit and then disappearing again. And a Navy dropship hovering overhead with Benny's imaginary girlfriend yelling at them to get on board.

This has got to be some kind of high-grade, psychedelic, psychotropic, psycho-killer pharmaceuticals, he thinks, even if he knows its a lie. Ven has ingested enough shit over the years to know the only chemicals in his body right now are dopamine, adrenalin and cortisol. Fight or flight or just close your fucking eyes! is what they're saying. But Ven's learned to just say No.

"Okay guys. Why don't we all get on the nice Navy flyer before more of those things come back," he says, surprising himself with how calm he sounds. "That sound like a plan? Okay, let's do that."

Backing away from the edge of the rooftop bar, he adjusts the case slung over his shoulder yet again and heads for the ramp.

Maybe they have coffee. That would be good. Hot coffee in one of those little paper cups they used to make when I was a kid. Like, somebody throw a blanket around my shoulders, give me some coffee, and we'll pretend this shit will be cleaned up in the morning.

Seeing a couple of bus crash survivors struggling, Ven helps then onboard, then follows them as the others climb up from the street below.

Sadly, no one is waiting inside with blankets and hot coffee.

Sam blinks as his mind is flooded with... Not knowledge, precisely, but awareness. "This... This is huge. Have to think.... Crystal spheres... Of course. Tolkien. He wrote about them. Distance. They negate distance. But the details are wrong, must have been hiding the full story to prevent reprisal. From whom... Oh, right. World War Two. Founding--no, emerging--of the Network. They're on the other side. Working with the ones ripping everything apart. Tolkien knew, set a warning in his books. The orbs aren't for mere communication, though. They're for transit. This will eventually let us fight them. But we need to keep it safe." . He laughs. "Of course. Keep it secret, keep it safe. Right there, in the open, once you have the key...."

He looks up at the others, considering. "We can't just dump this, too important. We need to keep it with us for now. If we find someplace really secure, we can leave it there, maybe, but I don't know if such a place exists right now. Good news is, we can use this to ride those lines, stay one step ahead of the Network if we need to."

Next time no herbal drugs in the egg nog.

Benny looked up at his Angel smiling brightly at him. Awful nice of her to invite me up. He grabs one of the boards in the water and gets himself nearly aboard... 90% of the way up a cold clamy hand grabs his dangling leg.

Raspy, horse, afraid Ted Danson sobbed, ” Benny... Benny common man help me up. I can’t make it myself...”
Benny looked down at him. Ted was a dick for sure. Sabotaged Benny on more than one occassion. Last year he had sawed off the bottom thread of Benny’s board causing him to wipe out in the final round of The Pacific Coast Tournament.

Ted was missing the bottom half of his body. No doubt s demon’s luch by now. Entrails floated in the water beneath the rival. Ted’s face was pale and eyes wide afraid of death. It would be easy to leave you, but damit...
” Common Ted, lets get you in and Patched up.”

Benny reached down and grabbed the man’s wrist pulling him up. Unfortunately Ted’s wrist was slick with blood, water, and sweat. Benny’s grip slipped and Ted Fell impaling himself on a peice of rebarb sticking out of some broken concrete. Ted mumbled, ”I’ll see you in hell...”

Benny cried out looking at Birtchtree, ” Damit... He slipped! He slipped! He...” Did he slip or did I drop him... He looked down at Ted one last time... Ted was dead.
Ted D as a murderwraith
Pretty please!

The Coming of the Rifts!

Gunship
US NAVY GUNSHIP wrote:Image
Rising tides swallow the Freshly Juiced Dragon, along with most of the shorter buildings in the area, as everyone gathers in the rear cargo bay of the US Navy Gunship.

On the Tiamat (the Gunship) is Commander Birtchtree, the pilot of the Tiamat, Sam, Benny, Rio, Ven, Stones, Barak, Juno, Savine, Sgt. Thomas, the K9 Shadow, Ed the spaceman, and 16 rescued people.

The rear cargo bay doors are open and everyone sees a second Gunship (the Triton) fly up and then hover in place to the rear of the Tiamat. The radio in the cargo bay squawks, "Beverly? Sorry, Commander Birtchtree! We got here ASAP whats the SITREP?"

The Commander removes her hand from Benny's shoulder after a light squeeze and a smile at the man and turns to depress a comm-button on the metal wall.

"Corporal Hanson I have civilians and wounded. I want them transfered to the Triton and then I am going to make one more stop to pick up some more civilians. You will head back to the Tig now. We will catch up!"

A short exchange, the Marine Corporal Hanson is not happy with it but agrees to his Commanders orders and the two Gunships hover rear to rear. A metal extending plank slides out of the rear of both hoverships and passengers are exchanged.

Left aboard the Tiamat are: Commander Beverly Birtchtree, the Tiamats pilot, Sam, Benny, Rio, Ven, Stones, Barak, Juno, Ed, and Shadow.

As the Triton prepares to leave the Commander looks at those still on the Tiamat and asks if they are sure they want to do this, she tells them she can issue them weapons but they are not soldiers and they don't have to do this.

Shadow barks and Ed laughs, "What he said. I'm not ditching Benny or Juno, heck any of you fine folks, I'm going and I do know how to use this rifle ma'am."

Sgt Thomas Prosek calls to Shadow from the rear of the other Gunship, but the K9 barks again and walks over to stand by Birtchtree, remaining on the Tiamat. Thomas frowns and limps from his leg injury closer back to the other Gunship, to head back to the Tiamat, but Birtchtree hollers, "I'll get him back to you Sergeant, you need medical attention and we will catch up with you. Go, the waves are getting insane high and we need to hurry to this building Juno has told me about!"

The two Gunships rear hatches close and scream away from each other. The Triton fly's out to sea and to the USS Ticonderoga, as the Tiamat streaks high over the flooding San Diego towards the tall apartments where Juno's father resides.

The Commander opens a storage compartment in the cargo bay and starts handing out weapons. Passing Juno a rifle the Commanders tells her to get up to the pilot compartment and direct Lt. Hawthorne to her Dad's apartments.

"Okay listen up. Ed show everyone how to use these rifles and Barak please help him. You two are trained and need to give a quick lesson to the others. If you have weapon experience great but listen these rifles are not pee shooters, they are tank busters and when you miss with them you don't leave tiny bullet holes you leave a blasted crater of a mess. They are powered by energy not bullets...Barak, Ed lessons. I am getting on the radio to call the Tig's Captain and give him an update and make sure he waits for us!"

In the Weapons Locker
NEMA X-212 Variable Light Frequency Rifle (there are 12)

(Carbine Configuration -------------------------------------- Long Arm Configuration)
  • Range: 30/60/120
Damage: 3d6+2, AP 2, MD (uses 10 shots), Ignores any laser resistance.
Rate of Fire: 3, 3RB, Snapfire
    Payload: 30
    Weight: 8
Notes: Integrated scope with night vision/laser targeting (offset 2 points of range and/or darkness penalties).
Mags: Each one has a magazine inserted in it and there are 24 extra mags in the locker.
Smoke Grenades (there are 12) (Range: 5/10/20; Effect: In addition to obscuring movement, smoke charges can also severely reduced the damage of laser weaponry. Creates −6 obscurement penalty for 1d4+2 rounds, before dispersing; ROF: 1; 0.25 lbs)
NEMA X9 Vibro-Axe (there are 12)

  • Damage: Str+d8, AP 4, MD
Fragmentation Grenade (there are 6) (Range: 5/10/20; Damage: 3d6, AP 0, MD, LBT; ROF: 1; 0.25 lbs)
A few minutes of rushed instruction (from Ed and the blue fish guy) later the Tiamat stops, hovering in place over a tall apartment building, directly over the roof top and lowers enough that one can step out of the rear, now open, hatch.

Birtchtree points out the rear, "Hurry!"

The apartment building is 32 floors high. The bottom 15 floors are already underwater. Rain and wind blast your faces as the gale force storm spits lightning and booms of thunder ripple across the horizon. The storm is increasingly worsening.

Shadow is the first one off the Gunship bounding down the exit plank and jumping down to the roof top. Barking the K9 looks back at the rest of you and then runs to a shack like door that leads down into the building.

Juno's father lives on the 25th floor.

Post a response to the events that have transpired thus far and let me know what your marching order will be, as you can only have two people side by side while walking down the stairs. Are you going floor to floor to get people to go to the roof? Or straight to Juno's Dad? Your plan? I'm fine with you coming up with the plan in the OOC area or Hangouts, but when you have a plan please post it somewhere I will see it. It's entirely possible to RP the plan here if you choose. So 1.) formulate a plan. 2.) post your individual posts in response to whats been happening.
Thank you for waiting an extra week for a post from me. Work...sheesh, was busy.

Conflicted (Optional)
If you attach a Conflicted Answer OOC tag answering the following question your Character finds a "Go Bag" often called a "War Bag" on the Tiamat. You can have the small backpack which is described below. You can answer this Conflicted Question from your Characters point of view or from your In Real Life point of view. Up to you.

"Due to WWIII, the infrastructure of society has gone back to a level not seen since the 1800s. Your help is requested in forming the new government, and you can change or implement 4 laws as you see fit. What would these laws be and why?"

The US Navy War Bag

Located inside the bag:
  • Gas Mask, a face mask that simply filters out harmful gases. Weight: 1 lb.
  • Water Purification Filter, these can-sized containers clean even the most toxic water of sediment and impurities (which are drained out the bottom). It produces 12 ounces of clean drinking water in about one minute. Weight: 1 lb.
  • IRMSS—Internal Robot Medical Surgeon System: For those times when there’s no medic or doctor around, this system can be a lifesaver. It contains countless nano-robotic devices, programmed to seek out damage in a biological system and repair it. The device— the size of a handheld shopping scanner— is placed over the trauma area, or over the part of the body where internal injuries are suspected. Activating it injects a horde of nanorobots into the bloodstream, which collectively provide an immediate Healing check at d8+2. Once in the system, the nanorobots provide a +2 to any following Healing checks for one day, after which they are flushed from the body. Fully charged, the IRMSS is good for four uses, after which it’s completely useless and must be replaced. Weight: 2 lb.
  • One flashlight, with a concealed pocket knife. Miniaturized solar panels give it near-infinite operation under typical conditions.
  • One short-range radio, five-mile range.
  • One hunter/fisher kit, containing wires, line, hooks, and other elements necessary for fishing and small game trapping. This provides +1 to Survival checks where food gathering is concerned.
  • Three saw wires, composed of serrated, high tensile strength wire and two ring handles. Capable of slicing through wood, stone, and even non-Mega metals.
  • One fire starter, a combination solar powered ignition cell and flint sparker (with six extra flints).
  • Four signal flares.
  • One climbing kit with 30 feet of lightweight cord, a pair of climbing gloves, four ceramic spikes, and a small mallet.
  • One bar of soap and a sterilized cloth.
  • One canteen.
  • Two weeks worth of minimal sustenance survival rations in sealed pouches.

Sam's 4 Laws for the New Government
1: Absolute Transparency. Leaders shall not be permitted to keep secrets from their constituents. Individuals who divulge secrets the state is attempting to keep are immune from prosecution.
2: Criminal Libel. Assaulting someone's reputation with libel or slander (by definition, a false and damaging claim) is not merely grounds for civil action; it is also criminally actionable with possible prison time.
3: Civil Service. All persons above the age of 16 shall be trained in personal weapons use, and required to perform as necessary in the military for up to two years. Individuals with strong pacifist convictions must instead accept assignments for civilian work, which may still take place in war zones (in particular, conscientious objectors are likely to find themselves as medics or transport drivers on the front lines). Only severe medical disability is grounds for failure to serve. Any person who has not put in their two years yet will be barred from political office of any sort, appointed or elected.
4: Hoarding of food, water and medical supplies is forbidden. While a reasonable personal stockpile is allowed, the community's needs must take precedent over an individual's ability to be sure that he has a seven year supply of canned goods and MREs.
Sam shakes his head, snagging a war-bag and slinging the strap over his shoulder after placing the orb inside. Then he goes over with the others to look at the weapons; ignoring the grenades, he takes both other weapons, slinging the rifle across his back and holding the axe in hand as they make their way off the Tiamat.

Once on the roof, he shouts through the pouring rain. "We will cover more ground and do more good if we split up. We've got 17 floors--I suggest three teams. Juno, Ed and Shadow can go to get her father, clear out anyone on that floor and direct them to the roof; meanwhile, the rest of us should go further down. I'll take two others to the lowest level we can get to and we can start moving folks up; another team of 3 can go down to the 20th floor and do the same--that way, by the time we get to 20, it should be clear and we can just head up. Sound good to you folks?"

My 4 law changes
1. Outlaw abortion - we’ll need to rebuild our population. And our social security net is just a giant Ponzi/triangle scheme.
2. Mandatory national service, whether military or civilian.
3. Bring back the death penalty. While I’m personally opposed to it in modern societies where incarceration effectively works at protecting society from dangerous criminals, in times of societal breakdown it is a legitimate means of societal self-defense (see the movie Defiant).
4. Mandatory proof of citizenship (papers, driver’s license, or something) in order to vote.
Rio tossed her duffel bag into a safe corner and went over to the weapons locker.

“Fuckin’ A. That’s what I’m talkin’ about,” the Latina said as she was handed a NEMA rifle. “Always wanted to shoot one of these things.” She grabbed one of the vibroaxes as well, two of the smoke grenades, and one of the fragmentation grenades.
OOC Comments
I took Rio’s “share” of grenades, but if any get left, she’ll grab those too.
“I’ll go to the lowest level,” Rio said. “I’m fuckin’ fast now!” She was practically buzzing with the magical energy that flowed through her right now. Even her speech was rapid, and she bounced up and down on her feet. “Can we really save everyone?” she asked skeptically, looking around the cargo hold of the gunboat.

As soon as they touched down on the roof, Rio was gone in a blur, heading down the stairs.

1. Law of Consecration: Everyone works and receives sufficent for their needs. The surplus is stored or kept for times of need and then rationed out.
2. Civil Servants Second: Leaders in the community are first gainfully employed and serve the community second. A lawyer or politician are not gainful employments as they do little to provide for lasting and long term sustainability.
3. Government Established on Morals: The Laws in order to properly serve the people need to be based on the good and sound reasoning of protecting the good values of humaity and therefore those who uphold those values.
4. Self Reliance: Every citizen is taught how to survive and provide for themselves. Those who contribute are welcomed in the community and are supported buy the community.
Stones was one of the last aboard but was likely the first to recognize the interaction between Birchtree and @Benny Gumbo. When Birchtree returned to the cockpit, he leaned over to Benny, "You landed a big one."

With Birchtree returning to the cockpit, Stones assumed the briefing was over and he moved to the ockers to secure some gear. Shouting as loud as he could, @Lars "Birchtree, what is your capacity. How many can we rescue before we can't take anymore?"

He stows the demon spear in the locker and grabs a war-bag, a vibroaxe, and slings a rifle over and around his shoulders. He passes on the grenades but does look for any scuba gear and nods to @Barak, "Care to see how bad the lower leves are?"

Patting the spot where the Ginsu is tucked into its make shift sheath, Stones feels he is ready and jumps from the ramp as soon as the roof is in sight.

Thirty two floors. Fifteen flooded. Seventeen inhabitable floors remaining. Eight apartments per floor. Two and a half individuals per apartment. Three hundred fourty survivors for an average. Seven floors to twenty five, so eight floors with a possible one hundred sixty survivors.

Stones looks for an ear piece and communicator, then frustrated just shouts to everyone. "Get to @Juno Reyes' dad asap. Need at least a two man team with that one.

"Anyone else in a state of disability will most likely need to be left behind."

Golden Age build. Structure should hold for another ten floors before we are unsafe.

"Ten floors down will be the safest distance we can go."

"This building has backup generators on the roof but we cannot guarentee the elevators are working."

"Anyone that cannot move on their own, unassisted, must be left behind."

Sam doesn't reply to Stones' instruction on who to leave behind, instead simply heading into the building and down the steps after Rio, axe in hand in case they need to bust down doors. He certainly has no intention of stopping at ten floors down--but if Stone does, well, that's about where he wanted to place the middle team, anyway.

  • Wheaton's Law: Don't be a dick. If you wanna be a dick, you can go be a dick somewhere else. "Somewhere else" might be six feet under, if you're dickish enough. Extrapolated to include any behavior that harms or deprives others in the community. Punishment varies.
  • Donne's Law: No man is an island. Private property is great and all, but anything necessary for survival (food, water, fuel, etc.) should be shared or otherwise used on the community's behalf. Hoarding is punishable by confiscation and exile.
  • The Rule of Thumb: There's a lot of strange shit out there now. If you wouldn't want to stick your thumb in it, don't bring it back to camp. Endangering others through reckless disregard of safety protocols is grounds for expulsion and/or execution.
  • Logan's Law: You can never have too many knives. Able-bodied adults are responsible for maintaining at least one weapon with which they can defend themselves and others; dereliction of equipment is punishable by confinement with short rations, escalating to expulsion after repeated violations.
Ven listens in a daze as Commander Birthtree rattles off orders, then points the group from the Dragon toward a weapons locker. Without conscious thought he moves with the others, watching as Ed and Barak demonstrate the use of the energy rifles.

He picks out one of the war-bags, attaching the carrying case holding his katana and cache of data discs to a couple of the outside tie-downs. He straps one of the vibro-hatchets next to it, then pockets a smoke grenade.

It's not until he's checking the charge on his rifle's e-clips that Ven shakes out of it.

"Wait a second, are we really going to do this? Go play Gears of War out there with a bunch of fucking demons? I'm sure Juno's dad is a great guy and all, but half of California's underwater by now and it's not like he's gonna be alone on the other side ..."

He stops talking as his brain catches up to his tongue, then sighs. "Fuck. I guess we're doing this.

"Sam's plan sounds like a good one. I'll go with the middle group. Save who you can, but resist the temptation to be Lawful-Stupid: If you see something that looks like it crawled out of a Giger painting, pop smoke and get the fuck out of there and to the chopper."

Barak quickly shows the others how to use the rifle, which can be paraphrased as such;

"Point it the barrel away from you, pull here to shoot, this to eject e-clip, safety here, don't shoot yourselves."

Barak looks at Stones, then at his commander for a response.

"Who put him in charge?" he asks as he hunts in the gunship for any rebreathers, whilst also helping himself to 2 smoke grenades, a vibroaxe and a carbine, "no idea who you are and what you can do, so if you are planning to go underwater, you follow my lead. Search and rescue protocols, there may be people trapped further down. If there is no gear on the gunship, do not try to follow me. You won't be able to keep up and it diverts time away from rescue efforts. Give me a running count of how many survivors you have found and if anymore Gunships are inbound. I will be on the last one out."

With as many rebreathers as he can carry/find, Barak moves to a suitable spot so he can dive into the water.

Juno barely pauses long enough to kit up...even that concession is only because of her vivid recollection of the monster near Benny's place. She grabs a rifle, an axe, a smoke grenade and a frag. In the locker, on the floor, she notices the go-bag and grabs it as well without even looking inside. Having been in NEMA, Juno knows there'll be some useful things in there. She barely slows down enough to spare a glare at Ven, but does manage to fit that in, because goddamn.

"I'm heading to the 25th," she says shortly. "Anyone wants to come, cool. If not, also cool. I'm getting dad out first, then I'll go back and help other people out, until we have to leave."

And then she's running out towards the rooftop access door. If it's locked, she just tries to force it open with a good-sized yank from her cyberarm.

"Due to WWIII, the infrastructure of society has gone back to a level not seen since the 1800s. Your help is requested in forming the new government, and you can change or implement 4 laws as you see fit. What would these laws be and why?"

1- Militia Laws - Fit, able-bodied men and women are required to have basic militia training and keep and maintain at least one operable firearm or other weapon per person, to be called on in time of need for the mutual defense of the community.
2 - Census and Assessment - No holding out. Resources can be owned and traded, but must be accounted for, so that in emergencies they can be apportioned as needed.
3 - Abbreviated Judiciary - In a time of crisis, criminal cases are decided by a tribunal of judges, elected by popular vote, who's verdict is final. Cases are argued by the plaintiff and defendant, or by any proxy they can persuade to their side.
4 - Preservation of Knowledge - Information of practical and/or scientific pursuits is valuable and potentially irreplaceable. Destruction of such information contributes to the backsliding of humanity into pre-technological standards of life, and is a crime.

A few lockers down from the weapons and ammo, Stones finds wet suits and scuba gear. Doing the preliminary checks, everything appears in working order. Three hours is more time than we have.

Wet suit on, Stones settles the scuba tanks on his back and straps everything in place. Mask on he takes the rebreather in his mouth. Gathering only the vibro axe, he taps his ear to activate the earbud comms.

@Lars "Birchtree. I am heading below the water level with @Barak"

"Keeping this to a thirty minute recon. Rejoin everyone on the rooftop."

With that he is out the gangplank of the gunship, across the rooftop, and then climbing down the emergency escape to the water, at which point he takes the regulator in his mouth and tests his gear before diving the 150 feet of water. Stones survys the street level and begins assessing the damage the sudden flooding has done.

He then makes his way towards the door of the apartment building and enters in and begins checking the electrical, specicially cutting external power to the building. His next step is to see if the elevator shaft is even accessible and where the elevator car is. If the backup generators up top are able to move the car, then he sends it top side immediately.

Benny grabbed the go bag and a rifle swung his left arm arround Birtchtree and gave her a kiss. ”Something about saving Juno’s dad makes me all heroic.” He hopped down after Juno intent on saving the old man that had backed his juice shop. Some blood seeped out his nose as the cancer began to ravage his brain in ernest.

Maria shook her head. “What is the point of going below the water line?” she asked. “Anyone down there is gonna be drowned. They’re all dead. Save the living.”

Getting the rooftop door open, Maria disappeared inside with a burst of speed, heading down to the last level that was free of water.

Benny called after Juno doing his best to follow her now that he was laden with gear, ” Hey Juno, if like this is WWIII and we survive what kind of laws should we implement in our new society?” He halfway grins, and sort off hurries as he kinda thinks on the subject. He passably said, ”Maybe, we like do away with taxes? Law one, you may not collect anything on top of the negotiated price. I would love a law that everyone has to surf... What about a law requiring folks to learn ASL? I hope Savine is ok, you know anything about hearing loss?” Benny tried to stick with Juno, and sort of finished with one more wacky law, ”No killing... I would like that.”

No taxes
Required to surf
Required to learn ASL
No killing

Sam shrugs at Rio, fully in agreement with her assessment. "Seems like a longshot to me, too, but let's not worry about them--just head down as far as we can, then sweep our way up. When we get to the first non-submerged floor, we should probably split up to cover more ground, but whoever gets done with their half first should go help the other, rather than heading up right away, so we can keep working as a team."
