A Cold Night of Gaurd Duty (RP Area)

Post by Pender Lumkiss »

A cold Night of Gaurd Duty

The Kingsdale group had drawn evening battlement duties. Not a bad assignment except it was pretty cold in the Arkansas night. Captain for this particular watch, Pender Lumpkiss Mike went on and on about some of the scuttlebut of the night, ”Hehe... Brr, a bit cold up here... Uh Mr. Zapper right? Your team went down to Kingsdale for the Murderthon last week right?” The bundled up from head to toe in an official TL parka, Lumpkiss nods to the rest the assembled team, “Oh hey... Forty Three right? Cool love your outfit there. Angelic, you look familiar... My memory is a bit slippery have we met? “ As the wind chill hits full force he pulls out his gloves forgoing any other handshakes, ”Ahh looks like we got the whole team here. Jonny looking good in a TL uniform glad you came back. Oh Drew-drew you got assigned watch duty too nice, I ran into Tyler Thomas the other day he kept going on and on about you.” He chuckled, “Watch out for him... Oh hey, this is... Umm... Oillley. We just met, but he got assigned to night watch too.”

Captain Lumpkiss steps aside revealing specialist @Ophelia Monk. The captain frowns, “We were just talking about... Umm... Well what were we talking... Ah no matter just make sure everyone, you too Oilley report to briefing room 2C tomorrow morning... Well enjoy the night I am going to check in with Diamond Clad.” He stopped for a second, “Oh yeah, 10k creds have been transferred to your accounts. Nice job on the whole Kingsdale incident.”

The captain leaves going down a hidden alcove made of stone. Above the alcove was a wooden sign reading, All Sentries must have geiger counter! No exceptions! Probably a joke from one of the crazies in the legion. The air was cool and brisk, no snow but definitely really cold. The lights lf the castle shed shadows in the slight vslley and wooden forest below, making it seem as if things were darting to and fro in a teasing ballet.

The group is left alone, most having met on the road and forged a tenuous bond in the Murderthon, but a newcomer @Ophelia Monk is now thrown into their path.

Feel Free to RP as you will... This area is for you.

Common Kn
Pender Lumpkiss is a bit of a bumbling idiot. He normally has a sharp assistant Mrs. Dee who accompanies him and keeps him on track. A little bit ago there was some kind of incident out east near Shemarian territory where Mrs, Dee lost her life. Since then the captain had been a bit of recluse, strange to see him in such a good if forgetful mood. Diamond Clad was the mayor of a city called Gloom. At one point the legion spear headed a force of good sent to help the city dispose of a warlord.
On a raise, you also know he was the captain handling one of the most successful groups, the vaunted 13th set. He also spear headed the recruitment of a team sent into the vampire kingdoms. Finally he was involved with the 77th CIT, and less than two weeks ago returned from bringing them back from some kind of void. Diamond Clad and Pender Lumpkiss had brought some kind of sphere object with them that is being studied in a secure lab.
Ophelia
Yeah so you just got 10k for modifying Penders Memory so he forgot Mrs. Dee. He fought you pretty hard and seemed pretty resistant against the attempt. You had to go deeper and harder than usual.

The newcomer steps forward slowly after Lumpkiss semi-introduces her, her Plastic-Man armor seeming to be about as heavy as she could manage, and even then she moves with deliberation. It's clear she's uncomfortable in the cold night air; it's just as clear from her demeanor that she has no intention of complaining about it.

Once Lumpkiss is gone, she pulls out a canteen--standard Legion issue, presumably taken earlier from her NG-S2. "Pleased to meet you all. Ophelia Monk. I hope you all do not mind being saddled with a nattering old woman." She tilts her head, almost bird-like, as she looks over the group. Her speech is smooth, but almost as deliberate as her movements; each word clearly enunciated before moving on to the next. "One nice thing about being old. You know that when you are assigned to a new group, and it's night guard duty during the middle of winter, it is a good idea to introduce yourself to everyone with some hot cocoa." She holds out the canteen. "Do not tell the good Mister Lumpkiss, but it's possible that a drop or two of something more potent was still in the canteen when I added the cocoa."

Anyone taking her up on the offer finds that 'a drop or two' is not all that inaccurate--there's just enough of some sort of peppermint liquor in there to take the edge off the night's chill. Her eyes have a glimmer of amusement as she watches people sip.

"So, who might all of you be?"
For the Observant and Nosy
Visibly, yeah, she's old--over fifty, at a minimum. Also, if you're observant--she doesn't use any contractions, at all.

To anyone who is checking auras, hers is strong--way stronger than her frail body, especially. Psionic, with something strange in the mix, too.

If you're using Exalted Detect AND get the Raise, yeah, the 'something odd' is that she's a Psi-Ghost, as well as a powerful Psionic in her own right.

Forty Two laughed warmly. "No silly I am Forty Two. Forty Three, was much larger than me, almost 100 lbs and his mind was very forgetful. He always mixed up words and stuff.

"Wow, that tastes pretty good thanks. I am Forty Two, and it is a pleasure to meet you. This is my best friend @Aggelos she does not have any other friends because she is mean and no one loves her. But you will get used to her. And she helped kill some juicers so we didn't die. That is cool right?" The 6" little automaton never seems to rest his body or his mouth as he buzzes around. The fluid way he goes on cheerfully about killing people can be a little offsetting as if he really is a nice guy, but maybe just a little immature emotionally.

Examining the warrior Forty Two zips in and pokes her. "Hey what are you? You are like a mind melter, but not like Jordan, you must be a cool race or something? So what are you."

On arriving at the battlement to find Commander Lumkiss there, Aggelos unslings her rifle and begins to studiously survey the valley bellow. Her answer to his inquiry is a brusk "No sir, it's a pleasure sir." then she immediately goes back to looking out her scope into the darkness.

She considers correcting the hyper little guy settles for a snort and an eyeroll instead. At least he didn't call me his bodyguard Looking over at the newcomer she interrupts Forty-Two excited chatter. "Poking strangers is a bit rude Forty-Two." Shouldering the rifle, Aggelos pulls a field cup from her belt and accepts some of the hot cocoa. The young woman is tall, a bit over six foot, and very athletically built. She also seems to take guard duty very seriously as, in addition to the JA-9 on her shoulder, she is wearing four archaic slug thrower pistols and a vibroblade. "So are you a violent misfit or a fluffy carebear? I'm guessing the latter from the cocoa." Taking a sip she smiles and adds. "Maybe not so fluffy."

Forty Two looks back at @Aggelos after the rebuke for poking @Ophelia Monk. "Oh sorry Ophelia. That is why @Aggelos is my best advisor, because she helps me with stuff like that. I really need to do that less often. My people are much more physical in our communication than humans. It helps establish dominance without killing each other because you can feel each others strength. So I am really sorry, I would never want you to think I am dominating you, Abraxlidone did not want me dominating anyone. So please don't think my poking you was to establish dominance."

Taking a breath and still examining her from multiple angles he finishes. "You just so weird, its like your human, but not human at the same time. Oh, maybe your a half breed, like when ogres and humans mate? Are you a half breed?" Suddenly the offensive line of questioning ends as he looks out. "Did you see that, someone is coming." Pointing out to a spot that must be half a mile away where a group of legionaries are returning from patrol. Then without waiting to see what others think he asks. "What is a carebear?"

Ophelia seems a bit bemused at @Forty-Two's chatter, and not particularly offended by the poke, though perhaps surprised. "Fortunately, he does not poke very hard," she comments to @Aggelos.

She takes a sip of her own cocoa, chuckling at Aggie's question. "Neither violent nor fluffy, I should think--though I suppose both 'misfit' and 'carebear' might have been spoken of me in different contexts. I think the adjective you most often will find me associated with is 'creepy', possibly followed by 'ruthless'. Forty-two's line of questions are getting into the why of it."

She pulls out her thermal binoculars and also scans the valley--she can't just be the cocoa-carebear on the team, after all. Looking out, she continues to speak. "Neither half-breed, nor human, nor D-bee, little one. The word you are looking for is 'mutant'. My people were of entirely human stock, but changed by the energies that warp this world; our children breed true, so long as we mate with one another. If we take a human as a mate, our children can 'break' either way."

She lowers the binoculars, reaches out, and pokes the cap Forty-Two is sipping his cocoa out of--only her finger goes straight through it, poking him in the snout, instead! "I am a Psi-Ghost." She pauses. "And yes, a Mind Melter, as well."

”Actually! It’s Lu… nevermind” the short woman’s voice trailed off when it was obvious the captain wasn’t listening. She cocked her head at his mention of Taylor.

Lulu watched Captain Lumpkiss as he left and suddenly noticed the little wooden sign for the first time. Gasping with panic, she scrambled in the messenger bag slung across her chest for the medical scanner kit. She flicked it open, punched up the radiation readings and started swinging the scanner back and forth around the parapet as Ophelia introduced herself. She walked around the whole group, only occasionally glancing out at the surrounding countryside they’re supposed to be watching. After the second pass failed to show any elevated levels of radiation, she put the scanner back in her bag with a disgusted noise.

When Ophelia offered her cocoa, Lulu shook her head but smiled, her chocolate-colored eyes crinkling at the corners behind the dark glasses sliding slightly down her flat nose.

"Well that's a definition. The one I learned from my father was "A person so wrapped up in the notions love and redemption and such that their soft heartedness often brings additional complications to otherwise straight forward operations." But I can see the correlation." Sighting in on the returning team spotted by Forty-Two, the Atlantian begins backtracking the groups passage, looking for any tails or stragglers. Seeing them all clear she then watches an owl stalk prey thru the new ir feature in her helmet.

Something in her tone makes it clear she's returned to addressing the older woman. "Bit of both huh, and an old hand at field ops no doubt. So our handler then? Could be worse I suppose."

Ophelia shakes her head with a soft chuckle @Aggelos , also looking through her binoculars. "Oh, no, nothing like that. Does this team have a ranking member? If so, I am definitely under them. And my experience is as narrow as it is deep, I am afraid--I am a bit of a specialist, really. I can break into a building or into someone's mind with equal finesse--and if there's something in there we need, or which we need them not to have, I can acquire or remove it, then depart with little or no trace. But outside that scope, I have no particular expertise. In direct conflict, in particular, I will be able to provide little more than support for the rest of you in most circumstances."

Lowering the binoculars, she then glances @LuLu. "I know you did not want to correct Captain Lumpkiss, but I would like to know your proper name, Dear. After all, it will likely get annoying if I keep calling you Drew-Drew. You said 'Lu-', is your full name 'LuLu', then? And what is your own role on the team?"

Ophelia smiles at LuLu. "Lucinda, LuLu for short. Got it. A pleasure, LuLu." She returns the handshake, then resumes watching the night with the binoculars, in part so that the young medic can tend to Aggie without the latter having the excuse of needing to keep her own watch up.

Jane does not say much of anything to anyone. She stands apart and allows the cold wind to caress and then sting her bare skin. She seems unmoved by whatever refence the Captain used for her.

The truth of the matter, she has no name. Any name would work she guesses though she feels like it would be like a title. Something one earns.

She turns back to "observe" what is going on beyond the walls. Lost in her own thoughts.

The psionic gunslinger sighs heavily It's like I didn't just reprimand Forty-Two about personal space... Still she removes her helm and stoops down so the medic can examine her eye. "See, healing up just fine, I've been taking the antibiotics. A follow up was totally unneeded and a waste of your valuable time."

Forty Two slows his normal flipping about in aerial acrobats at the thought. Then altering his appearance and growing to nearly 2' tall into the form of a small blue bear standing erect with a crescent moon on his chest it says. "Like this, is this a care bear?"

As the others are distracted by the people coming from the ridge line Forty Two examines them with its own amazing dragon vision and arcane awareness. "Do we know them?" Then it explains to the others what it sees about them.

The clock strikes at Midnight!

A chime in the distance rung... Perhaps a clock tower from the town closest to the Castle? Anyone looking at their geiger counter would notice a slight ping as the dial maxed out for the briefest of seconds. A swirl of wind flicked Aggy’s silken locks, and Keith’s goggles unbuckled falling to the ground. Something nudged Jane’s primordial brain. The sign Lulu had been looking at warning of radiation bled a vibrant red. 42 almost passed out due to the arcane energies swirling from the battlement to the ground far below. Ophelia heard a small cackle, like a child and bear combined.

From below out of the bushes emerged 20 small stuff bears of incalculable horror!

Please continue your RP... If you dare face a carebear stare, mwwaaahahaha.

Goddess, please let that form not appeal to him "Radio chatter with central indicates they check out, it's Field Team 4. I was just making sure they don't have a tail."

Looking down at the zombified cartoon characters Aggelos has a good laugh, looking to the person there she figures most likely to have played such a prank gives him a wicked grin and starts to congratulate him, "Heh heh, nice o... but stops and drops mid sentence when her gut screams to duck. A ray of energy streaks thru where she was just standing. One that was both a vibrant rainbow and obviously of corrupted energy. "Fucking crazy ass planet. Zombie toys. Really?" As messed up as it is there is the relief of having a clear and present danger. "Guess I'll see how my girls do in the really real." About to lean out and open up the psi slinger pauses, "Before I get to blasting maybe someone make sure it's not kids playing a trick or some shit."

His eyes bothered by what he sees Forty Two shrinks back down to his warrior form and sounds an alarm.

The magic that animates him allowing him to perfectly imitate a loud speaker as he warns the other centuries of the danger.

Racing around with his normal acrobatics on his magical platform like the Cobolt Surfer he warns. "Zombies" Then looking around the team he says. "Come on, this is the stuff you were trained for. Easy as pie for the best team on Guard!"

Aggy gets +2 shooting, Jane gets +1, -6 to hit 42 at range, -4 in melee

Jane is gently stirred from her thoughts, now far distant. Coming to her full senses, she takes @Forty-Two's directions and levels her Light Ion Blaster over the parapet.

Even with her abilities to see in dark, what she sees coming towards them is just one big shambling mass. Having never had toys growing up and certainly not familiar with what is before her, she shouts back to 42, "You sure about this?" Taking his silence for confirmation, she levels off a shot of the Ion Blaster.

At first Jane thought that the first shot had missed and then she smelled something like burnt clothing followed by only what she would consider grilled fruit, like peaches, strawberries, and watermelon. She quickly looked over the wall and her other senses registered nothing more than little pockets of flame spread across the dispersement range of her Ion Blaster.

"By the Forge, what other strange things does this planet have?"

Raise. All 5 other team members get following benefits:
Increase Pace by 2, then double it. Ignore the Running Penalty. Reduce Multi-Action penalties by 1. Effects last for 10 rounds, due to Ley Line.

Free action: Go Intangible.

Ophelia frowns at the grotesque forms coming for them. "They are either constructs built to resemble the undead; or creatures that have been rendered undead. I suspect i will not be able to affect them directly. Fortunately, I am not completely without options."

She focuses her attention on her new teammates; specifically, their adrenal glands (or, in the case of 42, whatever in his internal systems is responsible for the flight-or-fight response). All are filled with a massive surge of energy; the world around them seems to slow down.

"There. That should do. I'll have to skip the next bit, I am afraid. Maybe once I've had a chance to pick up a better suit of armor, I will be able to stand beside you in the field more fully."

And with that, suddenly the snow is falling through her body, and she steps back, half-inside the wall, making it much harder for anything to actually attack her.

Zooming in with the optics of her new helm, Lulu is frankly horrified by the zombified version of her childhood delight. When she feels the unnatural surge of adrenaline, she tears her eyes away from the shambling creatures being shot at by her teammates and turns to see where the rush came from. Suddenly all the people around her are moving faster and Ophelia is insubstantial. Lulu sees the older woman stepping back, or is she stumbling? New terror, fueled by the artificial boost of hormones, has her mind spinning with the medical repercussions of what she's feeling and what could happen to the psion if she re-materialized while still standing IN the wall.

Lulu makes an fruitless grab for Ophelia's arm, an unconscious action stemming from an overwhelming desire to not see her teammate's organs replaced with castle stonework. After her fingers pass through the other woman's bicep, she snatches back her hand.

She speaks, in double-time because of the boost of speed "That is really freaking me out. Please.. I mean I will... if you would just.. I will stand in front of you if you would please just step out of the wall."

Lulu makes a beckoning motion and steps up between Ophelia and the edge of the parapet.
