A Prestigious Introduction

Post by Snake Eyes »

The Fixer
The Fixer.jpg
A slick, well built man walks through the doors of The Crash. At one point or another, though not all at once, every eye in the place turns to look him over. He stands out in a crowd, a well-dressed, confident fellow; but when they turn back to their drinks, they've all but forgotten him. He scans the bar with the eye of someone skilled at sizing people up, and he does so in an instant. He notes the locations of each of his intended subjects, then moves towards the private room and sits down at your table. A barmaid places a drink in front of him, gives a little wink, then saunters off.
The Fixer, as he's known to you, has never steered you wrong, and always found the best jobs. Whether they were easy money for minor work, or tough jobs and crazy long pay, he had a knack for getting work when there was none. Prestige Unlimited, word has it, is his favorite outfit. They get first crack at the cream.
His deep voice rolls out, smooth as silk, but still purely masculine; booming, but not overpowering; and a hint of an upper class accent, though anything but demeaning. "Ladies and gents." He gives you a cordial nod, before getting right to business. "The gets are slim right now, but I've a few things I've lined up. First choice falls to you, friends." He glances at the closed doors of the private room, then pops his case. A holographic image jumps up for all to see.
William Tack
William Tack.jpg
"First up. There's an old saying. 'Gambling is the devil's way to poverty.' Maybe, but gambling on the Market's money...well, I'd rather deal with the devil. This is William Tack. He's got some sway, but he's losing it up here." He twirls two fingers by his temple. "He used to be a noise, but now he's a squeaky wheel. He owes. Big. He's been trying to hit it big on anything you can think of. Murderthon, Battledome, dog runs, cards. More he owes, bigger he bets, deeper he goes. Well, his cred's run out. The vig alone is enough to put him and half the people in this town in a coffin on principle." He sips at his drink, then continues. "Chicago wants paid in full. They prefer the cred, but if he don't got, they'll take the head. Network wants settled in 2 weeks. Come back with cred, Prestige gets 5%. I get my 3% of that, as always." A genial smile breaks across his face. "If it's the head, it's a mil, straight out." He taps at the pad on his briefcase, and the holo shifts to Tack's vital statistics. His home base is right here in MercTown, with a second spot in Kingsdale. He's expected back in MercTown in a day or two. The Fixer lifts a small holo-pad out of the case and passes it to Crotalo. "Details are there. Figure if you want it and who you need, let me know. Want to pass, I've got more." A quick glance at the holo-pad shows the damage: William Tack is in for 50 million.
Another sip of scotch, and The Fixer continues. "Next option is a glorified smash 'n grab. Dutcher's got a little extracurricular down in Whykin. Even has a buyer set. Original, pre-Rifts music catalog, something called 'Eddie's Head.' Signed by the creators. Only one known in existence, mint condition. Present owner is to be relieved of her prize, and the thing brought back here."
Eddie's Head
Eddie's head.jpg
Eddie's head.jpg (36.89 KiB) Viewed 8531 times
The holo-projector displays a statue of a ghoul's head, which when opened, contains several compact laser discs labeled "Iron Maiden." "Easy job by comparison. Woman who owns it is some kind of spell slinger, but nothing any one of you couldn't handle. She don't need dead, just relieved of what she found. Intel says medium security. Mix of electronic and magic. Finder's fee is 500k. I get 3%. Don't break it. You can't afford it." An image of the current owner flashes by.
Fairah, music lover
Fairah, music lover.jpg
He taps at the pad on the case, and another holographic image pops up.
wooden trunk
the trunk.jpg
"Last one. This one's mostly muscle, but don't look like it. Need a small crew to help escort a delivery from the City of Brass to Castle Refuge." He glances at Gill. "Goes to your old boss." The image is a small wooden box. "Got no word on what's in it, but it's not as simple as hopping a line and delivering. Box won't port. You get to drive it." He swirls the amber liquid in his glass, takes another sample, then sets the empty glass on the table. "Should be an easy drive. Put your best faces on, yeah? Security's damn tight in that castle. Market's trying to get a man in, but Crotalo's connection hasn't delivered...has he? Did Skodati scat with the startup cred, or is he on it?" He shifts his glance to the vernulian, awaits an answer, then continues. "Anyway, our guy might be able to get you past the gate, but the place is Dwarf-speak to us. No layout, no idea how to find the buyer once you're in. Fair bet you have some inside goods, hey?" He nods towards Gill. "Pay on that is light, but there's bonus if you find a hook or a solid plant to leave there. 20k a day per body, base. Hazard pay, confirmed with vid of any confrontation, boost of 10 each per day. Drive's 5, maybe 7 days max, wheels supplied. Make the drop, 100k flat bonus. Find a way to leave someone behind to work an angle, another 100k." He grins. "Get pinched, don't bother slinking back to me, yeah? I never knew ya." He lets out a short laugh.
He leans forward and closes the case. "There you have it. Same drill as every time. Got 24 hours to tell me what you want and what to pass. If these don't sweeten your tea, let me know. I've got more in the hop." He pauses for questions, if any.
instructions
You've been offered 3 jobs of differing types. Talk amongst yourselves and pick which one(s) you want. The expectation is that, assuming they appeal to you, you'll pick one or two to accept, and one to turn down. If you want to spread your crew thinner, you could take all 3. Decide which of them you'd like to be the primary adventure. The secondary (and tertiary, if you like) jobs can be run by the off-crew(s) as a dramatic task. Details on number of successes, etc. can be worked out once you decide how many you want.
Feel free to interact with The Fixer. He may be able to clarify what isn't clear. Once done, he will depart and leave you to your discussions.

Gill listens, this William Tack guy really is asking for it. Job like that should be easy, and bringing back his head for a million credits would be nice. he and Curatrix would get 200K and that is a nice penny. But when he hears about the mission driving to Refuge and screwing with the people who betrayed him his blood warms. "I like that refuge job. I still know some people there, and a chance to get back at the people who betrayed me would be nice."

Looking around the room, "Anyone else think that would be a job their interested in?"

Listening to the assignments Jimmy only has interest in the big score. "So this guy he some sort of mage or what? How could he be worth so much unless he has some real juice behind him." Taking another sip the thick wine he always has brought to him he adds. "I do not mind a little work, especially not for a share of 1.5 million creds. No offence Gill, but I am not interested in making the same amount of money for work that will take three times as long."

Looking around he sees if anyone else has interest...

Crótalo's eyes dart back and forth as he assesses the situation, his forked tongue flicking absent minded while he crunches the numbers.

"The foolish mammal Tack owes fifty million credits. Five percent of that is two and a half million. Split five ways is by far the largest payout, even when accounting for expenses. It also has less downside risk if we are forced to consume the target. I see no reason to slither into refuge. My man there will deliver soon enough, he is still in MercTown at the moment."

The big snake waves his tentacles dismissively at any other suggestions, "Even your small brains must understand the numbers." His eyes narrow at their Fixer knowing there is probably a catch, "Who is this man that the Black Market would extend him such generous credit terms? Perhaps all is not as it seems."

The Fixer shakes his head. "Tack used to be a noise in the Market. Money man." He points to the vernulian. "'bout like you, Crotalo, but made some real bold moves in the day for some big scores and HUGE expansion. Not much for the arcane, least how I hear. Word is, he retired on good terms, with blessing, having left his mark. When he came back in a pinch, all the heads jumped to help on account of his service. Figured he was good for it. My guess, his head's gone wrong. He's never been this far under his whole life. Too savvy. That kind of cred strains even the best friendships, know it?" He shakes his head. "Shame, that. Still, keep it crystal. Network don't want him dead. They want the account settled." He eyes the more... carnivorous... members of Prestige. "He's got history with all Five Factions. Good history. His head is the last item on the menu...but 50 mil on his book puts his head on the menu, all the same." He smiles and shakes his head. "Maybe I should be specific, knowing this crew. If he ain't got, the Network wants his head. Rest of his body is fair game."

Alicia looks up. "So with the Tack job, just to be clear, they want his literal head, if they can't get the cred he owes? I doubt that the money exists for him to pay, Crotalo. Your accounting should assume that we are only going to get the head fee. Still twice as much as the music job, but arguably at least twice as difficult. Still, I do not fear work, and perhaps Tack has been up to something, and does have the money. So I do agree, that job has my interest. Alternately, the box job presents it's own possibilities.""

If the Market wants the head, I wonder if Tack has some cybernetics up there with data on it they are taking in lieu of payment....

"The man, Tack, he swore to repay the money he took from the Black ones, yes? And then broke that oath? Tahlia says, a hungry gleam in her eye. "I would do that job. It seem the most ... rewarding."

The music box did not interest her at all, nor was she particularly intrigued by the delivery job -- although Gill's mention of being betrayed offered at least a morsel of enticement. If nothing else, it would be an opportunity to check out his side of the story ...

The Fixer nods to Alicia. "They do, in fact, want his literal head. Point of message, most like. Plenty of rank knew he was getting the juice. Don't need word getting down that you can take and take from the Network and not repay, even with good history."
He confirms Tahlia's assessment as well. "That is accurate. He has sworn to repay, but to date, has only borrowed further. Remember, lovely, that they want the money if he's got. His head is forfeit if he don't."

The Fixer nods to the crew. "Like I said. Send word once you make your calls. Sounds like the Tack and the Dutcher job are on the menu. The delivery to Refuge..." He shrugs. "Guess that one waits. Them that commissioned this job specifically called out Mr. Ganadril Fatralin, by name. I can't even pass it off to my B crews. Still..." His eyebrows lift, slightly. "...don't wait too long." With that, he stands up, closes and picks up his case, then exits the private room.
As is standard with jobs you get from The Fixer, the details of each job are contained in the pad. The pad itself is heavily encrypted. There is no easy way to download the information contained. Attempts at hacking are recorded and remote reported. Even the display screen itself is designed to resist electronic recording. Most cyber-ware visual recording systems cannot pick up the display properly. The tech is beyond bleeding edge; it's likely not from this world.
The Fixer takes operational security very seriously.
At the end of each job file, you see a green "ACCEPT" button and a red "DECLINE" button. Pressing "DECLINE" deletes the appropriate file. Clicking "ACCEPT" puts Prestige Unlimited on the clock. Both responses are transmitted to The Fixer.
Instructions
Finish some RP amongst yourselves. Declare who is assigned to which job. Talk about why Ganadril Fatralin must be on the Refuge job. Whatever you'd like. Once crew assignments are doled out, there are separate threads set up for each job. Go post in there and let's get the dirty jobs started!

Gill looks alert when called out by name, alert. "Why would they pick me out in particular? Makes you wonder if there is something extra going on. I would do any of these missions, but honestly between big C and I our talents will be most valuable in hunting down this thief or in this delivery run."

Looking at the others he finishes. "With this guy running a triple threat on security I think Curatrix is about the best possible bet their could be. So lets do this." Accepting the first Mission Gill will put off the trip to refuge for now.

Seeing the bloodthirsty Fury volunteer for the tracking job, Ramon decides he best throw his hat in for something else, lest she forget who she's after and decide to snack on him.

"Stealing the skull thing, the music box, I'm in for that one," he says, keeping his voice low, the shadow of his hood covering all but the green glow of his cybernetic eye. "Always wanted to see Whykin. Heard they serve a nice rye whiskey down there."

His fingers play lightly over the butt of his pistol as he thinks about what else he's heard: There are some fast guns down Whykin-way, it's said. Might be time to see who's faster.

Re: A Prestigious Introduction

Post by Alicia Forsythe »

Alicia analyzes the jobs laid out before them, then steps up and taps Job 1's tablet, signing up for the debt bounty. "Tahlia, do try to remember that our employers would prefer him to be guided back to fulfilling his oath, first, and only if that proves impossible, do we bring back his head." The Fury is looking just a little too eager to go for the kill rather than the big money--and the intel that might be obtained along with it.
