1.1 Operation: Cold Slither (Intros & Mission Briefing)

Captain Baker has interviewed each of you, earlier in the morning. Upon completing the intake of each of you, she removed a set of mirrored glasses and smooths a small wrinkle on her CS Officers uniform sleeve. Satisfied its gone she looks up into your eyes.

"Normally I would have a meeting as a whole team, get to know each other and such. Introduce my Special Forces support personnel to you. However my boss has informed me that a priority mission has landed in my lap, and time is of the essence. When we finish here, go directly here."

She slides a folded up piece of paper across the table to you. On it is an address in the burbs.

"From here go directly to this location. Wait for the whole team to arrive. One of my SF support guys will be there. His name is Archer. Wait with him until I get there. Then we are off. I'll provide more details in route to our mission. Once I secure a SF escort APC and such, we leave for the mission. If you survive I'll formally welcome you to the Wayfarer Program. You understand, you are as of now disavowed. You will lead a false life and a real one. If anyone asks, you are assigned to a SAD...Special Activities Division paper-pushing assignment. Its terribly boring but safe. In reality you will be performing missions the Special Forces would struggle with.

Standing up the Captain states: "Dismissed."

Making your way to the address provided you arrive at Danny's Donuts and Baked Goods. Upon entering the shop you notice that it might be a front for you team but is is also a real bakery. A few staff are serving and cooking all sorts of goods. One staff member is much older than the others, he looks at you and nods. Silently he points at the rear door. His name tag says: Grimes, Assistant Chef. Grimes waves you on, to the rear door that leads into the back of the shop and where a set of stairs lead down.

Headed down the steps you are almost surprised to see a CS Skelebot standing at the bottom of the stairwell. It looks you over then pushes a button on the wall. The wall slides away and leads to another set of stairs leading down. "Proceed please."

Arriving at the bottom of this set of stairs and a short tunnel you arrive in a larger room. MDC alloys and steel cover the floors, ceiling, walls and two large metal doors are here. One states: Exit, the other: Armory. Located in this main large room are computers, supplies, chairs, a large monitor covering almost the entire right wall, and a man wearing basic black fatigues, no markings, no rank who calls you by name and introduces you to the others who arrive. As you six all arrive one at a time please feel free to "mingle" and talk. The man who is in fatigues goes by the name Archer and has little to say, he looks like a middle age grizzled wilderness scout and just tells you, "Your answers will be answered by Baker. While we wait, get to know each as best you can. You are about to head out on a mission once Baker briefs you. In the mean time, I will get you all bio-coded to use the doors here. So I will call you over one at a time and key your bio-metrics to the security doors. "

While you all chat for a while, Archer sets you up to have access to the security system. Eventually Captain Baker enters and nods at you all. She is no longer wearing a crisp clean CS uniform. Her long black hair is down, messy and mousey, and she has changed into white bakers outfit minus the hat which she tosses on a desk. Pulling a CD disk out of her pocket she inserts it into the PC connected to the massive screen on the wall.

A moment later the screen background changes from a beautiful outdoor wilderness scene to the sharp, ugly features of a CS officer. Larger than life his face fills the screen and is on pause, static waves across his sinister face, and Baker looks at you all to make sure you are watching. She then hits play.

Filling the screen across the whole wall the video of CS Intelligence, some say Black Ops Intel, is Colonel Thaddeus Lyboc. Some of you are more familiar with him than others, but every CS soldier has heard rumors of the man. He is always cautioned to fellow soldiers as dangerous, do not cross him and get out of his way.

The prerecorded recording of the Intel Officer nods crisply at the room then launches into a speech:

“Desperate times require desperate measures. War has nothing to do with morality or justice. It’s all about winning or dying. We cannot bind our hands with high ideals, even our own, or worry about the laws of renegade nations or the rights of alien people. We must fight fire with fire. And you are the match. My operatives have tracked a group of dimensional raiders back to their hideout. You will, with the assistance of Special Forces and a mage go after them. The mage will be on your team, but when in the escort he shall be handcuffed and appear as a prisoner. Specialist Richards...if you fail the CS I will no longer except Vanguard help. I do not trust you. Sweetie, I'll be watching. Juno - fail the CS and I will give you to my Interrogations Unit and they will wipe your mind and set up a new personality your parents would be ashamed of. The rest of you, if you are captured, or killed the CS will not recognize you as members, you are part of the Wayfarer Program and disavowed. Success will be rewarded. Baker you know what happens if you fail. Don't fail, don't let anyone know you are Coalition. Now go kick those raiders in the ass and stop their attacks on the burbs!”

Afterwards Captain Baker grumps, "Poppas ass. Okay Baker's Cell listen up! Archer and an ally of his tracked these dimensional raiders through their portal and located their base of operations. Hope you like snow, it'll be cold there. We are being escorted in a APC out into Iowa where a group of mages will open a portal and we go through. Richards is our return option. When we get through the portal you will follow a map Archer has drawn for you. Locate the base. Put an end to them, they are a group called the Delvers. If possible retrieve stolen CS gear or destroy it - don't leave it behind. Then return here. Only one thing. It sounds like you might have some competition. Intel suggests these Delvers contacted a group of Tomorrow Legion members and offered to sell the stolen CS gear to them. I do not know if you can take out this SET also, but you must prevent the sale from happening. You six will be the full team, and... listen I know this sounds like a lot. No offense Richards... dealing with magic, tracking raiders down, ending them, and doing it before some rogue legion scum can buy our property, and get back here alive, well... its why you each were picked. I believe you can do this. The CS is not, yet, capable of sending an army after the raiders using our advanced tech...it's just too far...and we are not ready. The portal you go through will take you directly to the south pole here on Earth. Antarctica. I am serious. If you survive this, there are several other far a way places I imagine you will find yourself at... Get ready, after I take care of some paperwork and the escort arrives in the APC we head out, probably ten minutes or so."

Assemble, introduce yourselves to each other. Once everyone has a post here, and it can be short if you like, I will post up next GM post, which will be you going through the portal and into the action.

Chi Town is a massive enclosed CS city. Sprawling around it for miles in all directions are the burbs.

The Sweetest Thing Bakery is where Jon (Sweetie Pie)’s mother works. Popular establishment in the burbs. Close to Chi Town, frequented by CS soldiers and a well patrolled part of town.

Karl’s Coffee is basically Starbucks. It’s everywhere in Chi Town. Not in the burbs, Karl’s Coffee is upscale stuff. In the burbs there is a cheep knockoff coffee shop called Carl’s Koffee on the far outskirts of the burbs in a seedy area not well patrolled.

The Cell Team (Baker’s Dozen) works out of a secret hideout under Danny's Donuts & Baked Goods. Danny’s is mid town burbs with occasional CS patrols and elements of seedy and still under CS control.

The farther out, away from the main city of Chi Town, one goes in the burbs the more dangerous it is.

It really was no wonder why the CS could not muster that far away. The losses from the war had no doubt left their army needing a fresh recruitment dirve.
He worse black clothes like it was going out of style. A vaguely familiar skeleton face plate adorned his face. The black helm was painted white with slightly elongated eyes. Clearly a juicer with some kind of modified harness sticking out the back of his leather jacket which interestingly had a small purple heqrt-shaped pie patch sown onto one of the shoulders. He hat a black top hat and a sleek cane about two feet taler than a normal cane, and slightly wider too. Having just cracked wise with the talkative Skelebot outside the room invariably swapping stories about lost loves and the latest Volley Ball scores he stood silent like a statue looking at the others. He appeared slightly uncomfortable in his silence as if he either did not fit in or perhaps was simply in his “Juicer Daze”. Maybe even both. Or it could have been he had exhausted all forms of small talk with the Skelebots on the other side of the door. Either way he watched.

Note: He is Psionic, his cane is magical

Once the Skelebot had opened the door in, Shades had gone intangible.

When Baker had finished her brief, Shades' shades appeared suddenly on a nearby table and then his wide grinned smile. In a few minutes Shades can be seen lounging on the nearby table in some ancient body armor. The body armor is scuffed and dented, anyone who knows armor knows there are tricks to reduce abilities to track and detect armor, it seems Shades knows them as well.

Sitting up he drops his feet down over the table edge. Before he can get his legs over though he appears to have gotten caught on something on the table and a round object pops off his armor with a twang and bounces off the table and onto the floor.

"GRENADE!"

Then Shades sits on the table with his legs over the side while he watches whomever scramble as his homemade Party Frag pops and starts spinning then spitting out metallic confetti.

OOC Comments
Shades has the appearing and disappearing antics of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. Is about as roguish and crass as Skinner, the Invisible Man from League of Extradornary Gentlemen. And has s psychological profile very similar to Murdock from A-Team.

The armored quiet soldier nodded to Shades as if he had somehow been able to detect the psi-ghosts comings and goings. As a way to greet @Shades and most likey accidentally hitting on the right name he said, ”Nice Shades.”

"Glitter looks good on you, psi-stalker."

Anyone noticing Shades would realize that as the Party Frag exploded that he went intangible, with his smile and then shades being the last to go.

His interview with Captain Baker went as well as could be expected. While she accepted him into the position Richards did not know why. The whole thing seemed well above his pay grade, and the need for constant arcane concealment to prevent the dog boys from sniffing him out was a little stressful preventing him from gaining actual rest.

As they left to go into the Burbs Richards watched the others carefully examining them in detail both with his human eyes and with the demonic curse he inherited from his traitor father. It seems he was not the only one with a curse, but at least the psychics could still claim to be human.

When Colonel Lyboc himself mentions Richards he is stunned for a moment. It was not right for the great leader to be soiled with Richards name, but Richards still felt pride. Though the Colonael was to important to ever feel pride from something like Richards. He was going to do a job good enough for the Colonel to accept.

These raiders would die to a man. These legion though, they were worse than dimensional raider, they included many humans who have betrayed their own, and many times on the battle field has he seen the heartless carnage of Legionaries. It takes all he has not to spit on the floor at the mention of the group that so often murdered Mankind and dismembered and tortured them so they could steel their gear, or sell it. Even men who surrendered were often put to death. He would have less than mercy on those teams if he had the chance.

As @Sweetie Pie and @Shades begin interacting Richards watches for a moment. When the Grenade hits the ground Richards reacts on instinct preparing to teleport everyone out of the room his hands raise in what looks to be a defensive move. But the "grenade" goes off first leaving him with no need to soil the team with the demon cursed touch of magic. Narrowing his eyes slightly at @Shades and a subtle shake of his head was all he had. The unprofessional nature of it, there where real men in this room and he would treat them like this was simply wrong.

Nodding to them all, but not insulting them with an offered hand they would never shake he introduces himself. "I am Richards, as the Colonel said I will be your support in the field, and your ticket home."

Jeffery Sweets, code name Sweetie Pie for his famliy’s baking tradition and his own heroic nature glanced at @Richards. A dabbler in arcane... How sweet. He kept his helm on fidgeting uncomfortably not for the first time in such a setting. His mutant need for PPE was something of a struggle, and now with someone so close brimming with his food source he would have to keep an eye on his hunger. Simply he nodded acknwledging both the skill and man who bore it, “Richards.”
His cane
The cane in his hand for those who could see magic was an artifact of nearly unfathomable power. I would appear the cane was merely hiding what was within trying in vain to shield the magical nature of something awesome. But the sheath was imperfect allowing some of its essence to bleed through.

You could hear Klanker coming down the stairs before you could see him. The 9 foot tall cyborg had to weigh almost a ton. The stairs creaked under his weight as he crouched while he came down the stairs. The chest plate of his armour had a big bullseye painted on it. As he walked over to a corner you could see a similar bullseye painted on his back, but this one had a big red X painted across it. In a surprisingly high synthetic voice considering his size, his voice rings out.

"Roger, Roger. Private Klanker reporting in."

Crouching down in the corner, Klanker listens to the briefings as he runs his sensors over the members of his new unit. Pulling up what little he has access to of their bios, Klanker pairs the files with his readings. After the briefings end, Klanker continues to study his new team. Their lives are in his hands, and his is in theirs.

At the fake grenade of 'Shades', Klanker knew that keeping this one safe from his antics and the reaction of others to those antics would be a major problem. Hopefully this escort run for the APC will allow them a bit of a shake-up to get used to each other before they had their real mission at this 'South Pole' and 'Antarctica'. According to his computer files, they should expect cold temperatures... unless the Rifts messed that up too.

Juno raised her hand at Shades' comment about there not being 'norms' in the group. The hand she lifted was clearly made from interlocking, articulated metal plates though, along with the arm that vanished up into the sleeve of her BDUs.

"Token norm here. Staff Sergeant Juno Reyes." She surveyed the assembled squad, then nodded at Richards. "Can you go into a bit more detail about what you mean by 'our support?' What exactly do you do, other than be our ticket home? I've never served with someone with you kind of...specialty."

With a glance Shades, she added, "You too, grenade boy. Other than act up in ways that will get you disciplined, what exactly will you be doing for us?"

Richards answered the Sgt in as much detail as was reasonable for the situation. "I can help provide resistance to any arcane powers they has, as well as perceives its use and in the case of any dimensional effects shunt it to redirect the power against them. I can also animate raw elements of the earth to serve the mission."

Shades laughs at Sgt @Juno Reyes comment. "Grenade boy. Good one, Sergeant."

"Actually, Infiltration and Explosives."

Anyone looking at Shades and specifically his hands would realize that he has something he is tinkering with, while he watching the conversation and the comotion.

Hunter arrived fashionably late, being diverted from a previous reassignment, to.. yet another. But, he just did as he was told like a good little dog boy. He took more or less everything in stride, going where he was told, when he was told. Yes sir, No mam, right away sir. He navigated the whole process with purpose if not zeal. The odd collective of individuals though, once he arrived, had his attention. The mage most of all, and not in a friendly way. The doboy with a badly scarred neck would make an odd, very muted noise like some ancient chain smoker trying to constantly clear their throat. The closest thing to a 'growl' he could still manage these days.

The announcement from Lyboc that this mage was to be part of the group operations disturbed him greatly. None the less, orders were orders and Lyboc, regardless of his reputation, had considerable rank. And was human, so... Hunter would just... have to learn to live with it. The Coalition States knew all, the Proseks and their chosen would lead all into a righteous future or... what ever. It wasn't so much that Hunter believed or even cared about any of the CS propoganda. He just... never questioned and always did what he was ordered to, so long as those orders came from proper sources and this was no different. He would go where the CS told him to go, do what they needed him to do, as he always did. Thus, the odd noise would quiet down after it was clear the mage was going to be with them for the long haul, or for so long as the CS decided to put up with them.

Beyond that, he just kind of kept to himself in the back, quietly checking over his equipment, though his ears were perked up and listening to the various conversations as best he could.
