Deezy nodded enthusiastically as Libertas spoke, then burst in with, "Okay I hadn't heard that but no, that's what I mean! What you'd WANT is implants that can draw from ambient environmental energy, which is a lot harder to do...and then you might also be limited to areas of high energy like ley lines unless you had really really low power draw... It'd be interesting to work on, but I don't have the medical background is all I meant."

She stuck a hand out.

He shakes her hand. "Yeah, that's kind of my job. Well, that and fixing things." He thinks for a moment. "Drawing power from Ley Lines would work if you could manage it, yeah. I mean, you'd be stuck living near one, unless it also had a storage capacity to make sure you got through transit... " He grabs a pile of napkins and pulls out a pen, making notes and sketches. The actual cyber-eye is... crude, at best; clearly, he's not a cybernetics whiz. But the equations surrounding it, and the bits directly related to the conversion are spot on.

"Okay, yeah, 40 hours of battery life, plus the ability to tap into a Ley Line to recharge and to draw power directly from it, should be doable, if you don't want anything but the basic functionality of the cyber-eyes. Now, if you're fine with just staying near a Ley Line or powering it yourself, you could totally amp it way over the baseline... Ooh, or it could be outfitted with long-range vision, even remote scans from miles away. That might actually be worth the risk of running out of power."

And he comes out of the technobabble fugue again. "Sorry, I kinda get carried away sometimes. Of course, there was this rumor I heard... shouldn't be possible, but supposedly, one of the leaders of Tolkeen somehow managed to become a Tee-Dubb full conversion cyborg. I would've loved to actually get to meet him...."

About this point, his brain connects the fact that he's talking to a woman... who is a fellow ginger... and who seems to be interested in this stuff and hasn't fallen asleep yet. "Would you like to dance, Deezy?"

[OOC: Let's just say that the Siege of Tolkeen books had some truly bizarre $#!^. :P ]

Max shouts out "I can drink and be merry with the best of them! Watch this!" He gets a hold of his beverage and turns it up, downing the contents. "Bartender! One for me, and a very large one for my very large friend!" Max gestures in Conrad's direction. "I'd challenge you to a drinking contest, but I know my limitations. You win!"

"Full conversion?!" Deezy squeaked excitedly, "I have to see that! You know, that would actually make it EASIER in some ways. You'd have a lot more room for focusing and gathering equipment, and storage for power. All the gear could just tie into the central energy system. The real trouble is keeping just a brain alive. Unless you sort of...I dunno...zombify it, but that could be a really bad idea. But you know? You COULD take a regular cyborg life-support system and just convert it to a PPE-electric system and hook it into..."

She paused as her brain caught up with everything Libertas had said.

"...dance? Uh...sure!"

Deezy popped off the stool onto her feet. Her heavy boots went CLUNK, but at least had cooled enough not to scorch prints into the boards.

"So which team are you with?" she asked as they found a spot with some space.

Honestly, I'm not the best fit, but they're good people to have at your back." Well, as long as Markus doesn't figure me out. Still not sure he was being completely... fair in his actions at the bridge. He nods his head at where Max and Lucretia. "She's my sergeant, actually, and Max is our heavy artillery." He opts not to call attention to Jude. There's confidence, and there's deliberately making things more difficult. "How about you?"

And as they start moving to the music, it's... odd. He's not a good dancer--certainly no better than Deezy in her clumpy combat boots, and his sense of rhythm as such is horrible--it's almost like he's listening to a completely different beat. But he's a good dance partner. He moves to balance out her own movements, so what might be two oddballs just completely flailing about turns into something more syncopated. She speeds up or slows down, he's matching her tempo as soon as she shifts; she lunges left, he sidesteps in harmony; she rotates left, and he does the same, so they circle one another. And he never gets his foot underneath those boots, which is nice. It's not pretty or formal, but it probably looks... fun.

It's a good thing Liberatas is a good partner, because Deezy kind of...isn't. She actually seems to have a decent rhythm, but she doesn't know any 'moves' or 'styles' and just kind of shakes and shimmies and does her own thing. Sometimes she pauses long enough to remember she has a 'partner' and grin at him for a second before going back at it. Somewhere in there she found enough breath to shout at him over the music...

"I'm in the thirty-second! I kind of don't really know who's in charge? We haven't had a lot of briefing yet, or maybe I just missed a meeting or something. Should be interesting!"

"Have you been at Castle Refuge for long? I just got here a few days ago!"

She discovers she has to tap his shoulder to get his attention--apparently, his hearing is almost as bad as she can tell his eyes must be behind those goggles. Once she repeats the question, he nods. "Pretty much the same thing. We've gotten our first assignment, but that's about it. And our C.O. got assigned to another task just as we were getting together, so we got a replacement. I probably shouldn't shout details about the assignment across a dance floor, though." He laughs, clearly enjoying himself immensely.


[OOC: Since the 'assignment' is still ongoing, I am of two minds talking about it as if it's already done--after all, Lib could easily end up dead by the end of it, in which case Deezy would be dancing with a ghost.... :P ]

“Tatiana.” Jude let the name roll of his tongue like liquid honey, putting a little sensuality into his intonation as he took a seat. “A beautiful name for a beautiful woman,” he complimented. “The pleasure is certainly mine at meeting you,” he said with a smile. “You seemed to hold your own out there on the dance floor,” he assured Tatiana. “I could give you a few pointers later, if you wanted,” he offered. “We’ll pick something nice and slow.” He smiled and sipped his White Russian. “You’re not from around here, right? Tanya smirked at Jude's flirting. Silver-tongued devil. Still, she couldn't say she minded the flattery, though she allowed herself a good-natured roll of the eyes at the comment on her dancing. "Mm, dancing with a cyborg is easy when he lets you ride on his feet--but how many girls get the chance?" She followed up with a playful grin. To answer him about her accent she nodded, explaining: "Though I've lived in this area more than ten years, I was born in Russia--a little town called Morshansk. But my home is not the Russia of this world, or not exactly. I came here through a rift--not by choice, I admit. And while there have been difficulties ... there are also compensations." She put on her best smile: home was hard to leave behind and sometimes hard to think of ... but her new home had its charms and comforts as well--and Tanya had always made an effort to make the best of her circumstances. I've never understood why people drink milk - milk is for babies. Or drinking the milk of another species... which I hope this is. I am not a rhino-buffalo calf that needs to grow massive. Well, one glass won't kill me, so I can at least be polite about it.
She takes a large sip of the milk, trying not to think any more about the oddities of the white liquid.
I wouldn't really say it tastes bad, but I still don't get the appeal.

I was part of a particular...enterprise. An enterprise that needed security and enforcement of terms, from time to time. They found I had a knack for the controls early on, so they just kept me in there. Every time we got paid, I chunked a little more money down to buy her off of my employers. We eventually had a pretty huge score, one I saved from absolute foul-up. The bonus off of that job paid the rest of her off, and fulfilled my contract. I kept on for a few jobs, but I felt like I wanted to make more of an impact than just enriching someone's pockets. Here we are."

Jude waved at Gordon for refills. Turning back, he smiled.

“Not sure I’ve ever been accused of being quiet,” he chuckled and grinned. “Most people tell me to shut my mouth. But story from my past…” He sipped his drink, musing.

“Well, about a year ago I got a job on a cargo convoy,” he told Tatiana. “Help with repairs in the event of a breakdown, ride shotgun, that kind of thing. Sort of a dogsbody. It was a trip plagued with problems and we were running behind. My truck had a breakdown, and the rest ditched us as we fixed the problem.

“Some...entrepreneurial opportunists came by and figured they had an easy score. Kind of caught us with our pants around our ankles, really,” Jude admitted. “So there we are, all trussed up, and they’re arguing about how to get into the container. None of us have the codes, because, well, we’re just peons. And they don’t have any explosives. So they start talking about torturing us to get the codes. I figured I’d better do something, since sitting quiet and obedient-like wasn’t working anymore. I’m not too eager to die for a truckload of whatever was in there.

“I’d had some time to observe these guys. I’d noticed a scent of perfume on two of them. Figured there was a girl involved. So I just started talking. Turns out I figured right. One of the guys was having a good time with the other’s girl behind his back. Got them arguing. Then I asked another guy about what cut he could expect from the haul, said he should sign on with us, since we get a bigger one. I got all of them arguing amongst themselves. Inevitably the guns came out. When it was over, I dragged myself over to the nearest body, got his knife, and cut myself free.”

Jude leaned back and sipped his drink. “Or I could tell you about the babies I saved from vampires on my last mission,” he said. “Pretty girls like babies, right?” He smiled at the beautiful Russian across the table from him.

Tanya listened attentively to Jude's story--there was no way to know if it was true, of course, just as he had no way to know if her story were true. But if it was an invention, it was at least a plausible one--and entertainingly told. Of course, she had a feeling she could watch Jude read from a duty roster and not be bored. "Occasionally," she allowed with a wry smile by way of answering his query--"In stories, at least, babies are usually fine. I can't say I have much desire to experience one of my own first-hand: they seem like a terrible pet. But I wouldn't mind hearing about someone else's being saved." Sardonic skepticism toward reproduction notwithstanding, Tanya's trademark good cheer was on display, and she leaned slightly forward, keen--in spite of herself--to hear more from him.

Jude leaned foward to meet Tatiana as well, gazing into those beautiful emerald eyes. “Can’t say I’m in a hurry to get a baby of my own,” he agreed. “Too many wild oats to sow yet. Maybe one day.”

Jude flashed Tatiana that winning smile of his. “You know, I’ve never really seen a Glitter Boy,” he said. “Care to go for a walk and give me a tour?”

Tanya couldn't help an eye-roll at the 'wild oats' comment--but she seemed to take it in stride. At his suggestion, she thought for a moment, drained her glass, then finally smiled back. "Yes. Yes, I would--and if you are very polite, maybe I will even suit up for you--I can't promise anything, though: people get nervous when other people access highly destructive equipment with no scheduled mission or maintenance."

“Oh, I can be very polite,” Jude assured with a smile. He tossed back his own drink and stood up. He moved behind Tatiana to pull out her chair for her as she rose. He took a moment to appreciate the light scent of her. He put a hand lightly on the small of her back as they walked out into the night.

“Beautiful evening,” he commented, looking up at the stars. “You don’t get a vista like this in Chi-town.”

Tanya smiled, allowing his touch and attention--at least, for the moment. It didn't take a genius to guess what was on Jude's mind--and while she had no intention of going beyond a certain point, the attention--even in moments where there was no component of touch--felt nice. "I don't suppose so--I've never seen a city so big--in fact, the town outside the castle here is the biggest I've seen in a long time." At length, she posed a question that had been on her mind: "You left Coalition territory, but you don't seem to bear them a grudge. What brought you here--may I ask?"

Jude was silent for a moment after Tatiana’s question. “I...made some bad decisions,” he admitted. “It was...healthier if I left.” He didn’t elaborate for a long moment as they walked beneath the bright moon. He noted how Tatiana’s alabaster skin glowed beneath it.

“Her name was Michelle,” he said. “Beautiful red hair, eyes green like emeralds -- a lot like yours.” He reached up and brushed back a bit of Tatiana’s dark hair, caressing her cheek softly. “And an accent, too. French, though. From Free Quebec. I had managed to get access to court at the time. I was schmoozing my way, hitting some high stakes gambling tables among the Coalition elite, trying to win my way into a patronage.” His hand dropped from her face and he stared off into the darkness again. “That’s how you get ahead in the CS,” he said. “Become someone’s lapdog. Scratch some backs. I admit to having...drunk the Kool-Aid, as they used to say.” He offered Tatiana a wry smile in the moonlight.

“Michelle was in Governor-General Alphonse Beauregard's retinue. I don’t know how much you know about CS politics. Beauregard is the emperor’s naval advisor. Used to run the CS naval base down in Baton Rouge. I figured she was one of his staff, but they seemed a bit...close.

“Anyway, we hit it off. She was vivacious, funny, but I sensed a bit...haunted.” Jude gave a wry chuckle. “Maybe I wilfully blinded myself to the signs. At most, I convinced myself Michelle was Beauregard’s daughter. The reality was it was a...political marriage, trying to better relations between the CS and Free Quebec. She felt trapped. I saw a damsel in distress, waiting to be rescued.”

Jude gave a sigh. “I guess you could say I was...naive. We had a torrid little affair. I made plans to run off with her. I didn’t know where we would go, of course. Back to Quebec, I figured. Maybe Laszlo, despite all the D-Bees there. Of course, we were discovered. There was a huge scandal. One night I was coming home late and found soldiers waiting for me. I managed to slip away, but figured it might be wise to...relocate.”

She takes another bite of cupcake, chewing slowly while considered exactly what to say.

"The very short version is that I grew up in a bad life, doing bad things on behalf of very bad people. Then I met a cyber-knight that helped me realize that I could change my life, if I decided to. He gave me a chance that few would have, and I decided to take it. I could have done anything at that point I suppose, but becoming a cyber-knight and helping others seemed the best way to atone for everything I had done. Someday I hope to do the same for others like myself."

Jude, I read Rifts stuff so long ago I don't really remember much detail, so I'm mostly going off of just the TLPG and what little tidbits I can glean from other people's posts and stuff I can find online. Personally, I'm mostly learning about Savage Worlds. That being said even after having played Rifts for 15+ years there are still plenty of books I have barely touched. Many of the books could be years of adventuring on their own, especially if the group likes that particular setting.

Of course it was a woman. Romance--and its substitutes--seemed to be an endless source of trouble for people. That was something that hadn't changed, in spite of how far she'd come. Tanya supposed it was possible to take comfort from that. She nodded along with Jude's tale--it was obviously an emotional story that brought up quite a few memories. When he finished, she smiled gently. Gordon glances around the bar to see who needs refills and who needs a friend to come pick them up. Making small talk with anyone who desires it, delivering drinks and food he makes his way around the bar cheerfully.

Yawning the bar keep spies a new comer who walks into the bar, dumps her bag by the entrance and plops down in a bar stool.

Tired but ever the charismatic fellow, Gordon makes he way to her.

"Good evening ...?"

The young lady looks up at Gordon and says, "Vi".

Gordon smiles and says, "Vi, can I get you anything?"

Vi lights a cig and looks the bar man in the eye, "Oh I imagine you could get me several things. But for now I just want to know...I'm new to town and need a job, this dive hiring?"

As Gordon listens, he slides a dress coat on and nods, "I am headed to a meeting tonight, like every Friday, to the town hall meeting. Milli usually has to cover for me. Maybe you could work here? Interested?"

Vi shrugs. "I guess."

Gordon grins, "Okay come by tomorrow and talk to Milli. It will just be part time at first I am sure."

Vi nods and orders a Whiskey and cola.

As the bar man serves her she spins around in her chair and looks at the patrons of the bar.

"Well, if I had a man, I would of course do what I could to keep him happy--and as for scary ..." She turned to him with a positively wicked grin--although it had an element of playfulness, there was a bare hint of the predatory in it too. "I do have a suit of power armor ... and a very big gun."

By the time they reached the garage, it was obvious Tanya didn't move especially well when she was afoot--she often stopped to rub her leg, too. As they reached the garage and stepped inside, they made their way past various robot armors, vehicles, wingboards, power armors and racks upon racks of tools. Between a rather scraped-up looking Mountaineer ATV--which she patted affectionately as they passed--and a multiped robot with a rear-mounted weapon that had the look of a scorpion, sat the brooding, glittering suit of power armor that had to be Tatiana's. Stored near at hand, easily visible, was the massive, distinctive "boom gun" that accompanied a Glitter Boy suit.

She stepped up to the armor, laying a hand on its shining surface as she gazed up at the towering humanoid form. "Something is wrong," she sighed, "Something I can't fix." Letting the meditative moment pass, she brushed her hair back and faced Jude again. "A recent mission--Most of our vehicles--and even some of the team--were contaminated somehow. Not dangerous to others, but ... well, it's caused Chevy no end of trouble," she finished with a quiet laugh.

“Yes, that big gun is very scary,” Jude agreed with a grin. “It’s almost like you’re compensating,” he teased. “But I imagine you could keep a man very happy.”

They walked along for a while and Jude noticed Tatiana rubbing her leg, having to pause for a moment a couple times. “Are you okay?” he asked her. “Did you get hurt on your last mission? I didn’t realize…” He really seemed genuinely sorry for having caused her pain.

When they got inside and to the suit, Jude stopped in his tracks, looking up at the glitter boy armor. “Oh, damn…” he murmured, eyes widening. “I’ve never been this close to one. I used to play with glitter boy action figures as a kid, fighting off evil d-bees. This...is awesome…”

Jude’s voice was filled with awe and he came up and ran his hands over the armor, touching it. “How do you even get up there?” he asked, looking over at Tatian. He kind of had a childlike glee in his face.

"I have nothing to compensate for," she teased back, though the second half of his comment gave her pause. She attempted to reply a couple times, saying nothing, before finally settling on a simple, quiet "Thank you."

She waved dismissively at his concern about her leg. "An old wound--it is fine if I don't move too fast." At one of the pauses, she explained a little more of her story. "When I came here--when I was pulled through the rift--I was in my plane. I crashed--my leg was hurt. I tried to fix it up, but ... I suppose I didn't do a very good job. It's never healed quite right. But at least I still have both my legs," she added with a sheepish smile--making the best of things, as usual.

She stepped between the suit's legs and stepped up a couple of small--but sturdy--rungs along the inside, pointing upward with one arm. "Not easy, but you open up the front and kind of swing up inside. Can't open the hatch if the suit's powered up and in motion, that kind of thing." She smiled--a hint of shyness, there. "If I had room for a passenger, I would offer to take you for a ride sometime. I suppose I could carry you on the back," she offered with a wink.

"But if you are at the castle next time we do field tests, I will let you know, and you can watch me shoot the gun." His enthusiasm was infectious, though they had probably done everything propriety allowed. Terra might have a few choice words if I powered it up--especially before we get the ... slug issue dealt with. "It takes a lot of getting used to--I understand each suit is a little different. Seems like they have all developed their own quirks after so long." She cast a gaze that could only be called 'affectionate' toward the suit, a half-smile on her face. "Again, it is not quite part of me--but close."

“Aw,” Jude said with a cute pout and disappointed tone, though he’d really had no expectation of being able to have real fun with the glitter boy if he’d really thought about it. He caught Tatiana when she jumped down and her leg threatened to give out, his hands resting at her waist as he steadied her. “You know, I might know some reiki massage techniques to help the pain in your leg,” he offered, leaning the beautiful Russian back against the leg of her glitterboy armor. “I could show you a few things…” He drew in close, caressing back her hair, gazing into her eyes, as his lips brushed hers.

Tanya's heart thundered in her chest at Jude's closeness. Her hands rested against his chest at his gentle kiss--not sure herself whether she was trying to push him away or not. He was awfully persistent. She bit her lower lip. "Another time, perhaps," She said hesitantly. "I think ... massage is traditionally saved for the third date." She smiled. “So...that means I’ll get a third date?” Jude asked cheekily, stepping back. He didn’t want to panic her. “I might know a place, but could be a tad far.” He looked around the garage and grinned. Dashing over to a wall-mounted box, he opened it up and studied the keys, finding what he wanted, and coming back to Tatiana, dangling the ignition fob. “How about that?” he asked, indicating Markus’ hoverbike. “We’ll take it for a spin. Um...do you know how to say, ‘I’m sorry, don’t kill him’ in German?”

Tanya swept a skeptical gaze across the hoverbike. Could I convince him to take the Bop instead? No, I've never driven it before--and it's still 'contaminated'. If I managed to cause any more damage than it's already suffered, Chevy might in fact kill me. Besides, I'm pretty sure he's got the only keys. Aloud, she managed: "I don't speak any German, I'm afraid. I'm not too eager to borrow someone's vehicle without permission, either. Especially, er, that particular one." She considered Jude thoughtfully--she didn't think their evening together was quite over, but she didn't feel like going back to the bar. And going to either of their rooms might send the wrong message. "I am sure we can find a quiet place to look at the sky without going too far. I can manage a bit of a walk, as long as we don't go too fast."

“Leisurely stroll it is,” Jude said, returning their keys to their place. “And I’ll give you a piggy-back ride if I need to,” he teased as he returned.

Jude fell in beside Tatiana as they left the garage. “Are you cold at all?” he asked, slipping off his jacket and draping it around her shoulders. He led her off the castle grounds again, circling the outer fortifications. After making their way through a stand of trees they emerged out on the bluff on which the castle stood with a beautiful view of the nearby ley line. Someone had conveniently set out a bench in the spot.

She didn't need a ride, but a rest or two got them to the point without too much delay. While the evening was cool, it wasn't quite chilly: still, Tanya wasn't too proud to accept the offered coat with a demure smile. Nodding toward the ley line as she sat, Tanya mused aloud: "I've lived with the idea of things like this for more than ten years--but I wasn't born with them. Arcane energy, coursing across the landscape from one point to the next, guided by nothing but the contours of the land and the variations of the magic field ... or whatever," she finished with a soft laugh, shaking her head. "Sometimes I feel like I have gotten used to this place, then ... something else takes me by surprise." She absently rubbed at her left knee--that seemed to be the source of most of the trouble--as she glanced at Jude from the corner of her eye with a fleeting smile.

Jude and Zima notice a shadow come over them as they walk out to the bench at the viewpoint.

"Hey, what are you two doing out here? I am Merlaggon. Who are you?"

With that, a Flamewing Dragon Hatchling lands with a thud near them.

"I am in the 1st SET. Are you two also in one of the SET's? Hey, this is a nice place for those of you who can't fly to have a nice view of the ley line."

Tanya let out a yelp as the dragon landed next to them--though she recovered quickly, let's face it, it's hard to get used to hanging out with dragons. She put on her best smile and waved sheepishly to their visitor. "Ah, my name is Tanya, this is Jude, and we are in SETs, yes, though not the same one. Do you know ArkTech? He is one of my team-mates, a dragon like yourself." The two dragon hatchlings might not get along, of course, but she had to assume they'd have a lot in common.

A petite young lady who came in with two others (a man and another older woman) looks around at all the different people in the bar. All three are dressed as Supply Staff Junior Officers of the Legion. Bookish looking sort, non combatants.

The young woman pushes her hair out of her face and comments: "It amazes me how many different kinds of heroes there are here at Castle Refuge. Oh, thank you ... Revy you said? Yes thank you we all three would love whatever the most popular beer is."

As Revy moves away to place the order, the three junior officers make small talk. They seem very excited to share a night in good company.

Jude settled onto the bench beside her. He slipped his arm along the back behind her as he turned slightly to give her his attention as she spoke. “They are pretty fascinating,” Jude had to admit, watching the ley line’s glow in the darkness. “A bit frightening. I remember the first time I saw one… Even growing up hearing about them, I don’t think you ever get used to it...or what it represents,” he said, a certain bit of fear tinging his tone.

Jude glanced down as Tatiana rubbed her knee. “Still bothering you?” he asked. “Here…” He took her leg up into his lap and massaged her knee a bit, trying to relieve the pain. “Sorry it was a bit of a walk,” he apologized.

And then a shadow darkened the moonlight over the couple and a loud thud sounded behind them, followed by a booming voice.

“Oh, fucking shit!” Jude exclaimed as he scrambled back. He fell off the bench and fumbled for the laser pistol usually kept at his side. Of course, he was unarmed and unarmored, however. “That’s a dragon!” he gaped, the fear clear in his voice and face as he grabbed Tatiana to put her safely behind him.

Tanya couldn't help but laugh--though it was more a stress reaction than ridicule--as Jude dived behind the bench. She got control of herself quickly and did what she could to reassure him. As sometimes happened in the midst of excitement or stress, her accent peeked out a bit more. "Jude, is fine! I can see is dragon--if he wanted to hurt us, he could have done it already. He wants to chat--see?" She pointed an arm at the crouched form of the young dragon--who certainly wasn't breathing fire, or striking out with his tail, or trying to eat them. "There is dragon in my unit. Hatchling, very young and curious. Merlaggon looks similar."

Jude was pale and breathing heavily. Tatiana’s beautiful face filled his vision as she caught his attention. He gave an unsettled laugh.

“I’m sorry. That...wasn’t very brave or manly of me,” he apologized to her. He took several deep breaths. “I...I haven’t ever seen a dragon. Well, saw a shadow dragon out at Silver Bluff,” he corrected.

Jude straightened his clothing and ran a hand through his consistently disheveled dirty blonde hair and looked up at the dragon. “Er...hello...Merlaggon is it?” He held out his hand a moment, realized that probably was odd, and dropped it.

With that, Merlaggon cuts a tree with one clawed hand, trims the bottom into a point, slams it into the ground, and CAREFULLY breathes on it to set it on fire.

"There! Easy peasy! Now why did the two of you come out here? Was it to look at the Ley Line? I guess so... enough people come up here to watch the Ley line that they even put up a bench here to make you more comfortable. How old are you two? I am only a few months old... but my Momma taught me LOTS of important things when I was still in my egg. Some stinky people, I found out later they were Orcs and a Troll, found me to start, but then Cory and the rest of her friends found me. Now we are all friends... even Timothy, the Cyborg... though he can be grumpy at times. Do you have lots of friends?"

Once he got the tree set alight, the dragon seemed to be talking about a mile a minute. Tanya did her best to answer, rubbing the back of her neck nervously--she knew one dragon hatchling, of course. "We came to look at the ley line, yes. I am thirty-two years old--and I just met your friend Timothy earlier tonight, but he didn't seem very grumpy." She smiled. "In fact, he seemed to be enjoying himself--it was at the little bar just outside the Castle." Her earlier query seemed to have gotten lost, so she decided to try it again. "One friend I have is a dragon hatchling like you--have you met him? His name is ArkTech. When he is not a dragon, he looks like a little human boy."

Okay, lighting the tree on fire doesn’t help! Jude thought. The dragon asked questions in rapid fire and Jude tried to get his brain to catch up. Tatiana seemed much more at ease, though. Jude was a bit surprised when she gave her age. So she’s older than me, he considered. Well, that had never been a problem. She was still quiet beautiful.

“Merlaggon, it is...nice to meet you,” Jude said. “I am Jude, and this is Tatiana. I am twenty-five,” he told the dragon. “But a word of advice, friend. It isn’t polite to ask a lady her age,” he said sagely. He flashed Tatiana a smile.

“We did come up here to see the ley line,” Jude explained. “We thought it might be a good place to be...alone. And, well, I suppose it depends on what you mean by friends as to how many I have. Most, like Tatiana here, only just want to kill me less than some others.” He grinned.

"I don't want to kill you at all, if that's what you mean," Tanya said to Jude with a half-smile. She was a little taken aback herself at the age differential--though a good deal less so. She'd gotten used to the idea that chronologically speaking, she might be some hundreds of years older than any normal human she would meet. It rather depended, of course, on whether she had traveled from a different earth to this one ... or only in time. Of course even if she had traveled in time, she hadn't lived the intervening years. All the same, seven years was little enough next to 'possibly hundreds of years'.

“Well, at least that’s a comfort,” Jude said with a grin to Tatiana when she said she didn’t want to kill him. “But I sense a ‘yet’ at the end of that sentence,” he teased her.

Jude looked up at Merlaggon again. “You know, in all the stories growing up, it was the brave glitterboys vanquishing the evil dragons.” He looked over at Tatiana. “So should you two be arm wrestling?” he asked her. Then his eyes brightened. “Or maybe mud wrestling! Or green Jello?”

Tanya rolled her eyes--not for the first time--at Jude's banter. It was followed up with a smile, though. "I only expect to change my mind if you give me a reason to," she countered.

She nodded toward Merlaggon as she addressed Jude's comment. "I think he's got the advantage in arm wrestling--unless maybe I can use my suit. And as for the other ... you don't know what his non-dragon form looks like. You might regret asking," she said with another playful smile. Most dragons took on a form that was human ... but she had heard of some who had a different approach. "Anyway, I did not come up here to 'vanquish' anybody."

Flinching at the sudden departure of the dragon, Tanya watched him go with furrowed brows and mouth slightly agape. That expression said one thing: What the HELL just happened? After processing the peculiar exchange for a few moments longer, she shook her head and turned to face Jude again. "Well ... tonight hasn't been the most romantic first date ... but it has certainly been memorable. Da?" She reached to take his hand, giving it an affectionate squeeze. It was difficult to tell in the shifting twilight of the ley line and the embers of the extinguished tree, but her cheeks might just have taken on a bit of a reddish tinge.

As of this morning the Outside Inn Bar & Grill was purchased by a few of the Black Company Mercenaries. An investment. After yesterdays fire fight in the bar the place was quickly fixed up and purchased by Lulu and Fender. Both are Juicers. Lulu is the Bar Keep and Fender sits around drinking and acting like bouncer. Both are surprisingly nice individuals. Mr. Bean took his cash and left for adventure far away. Milli has a cottage located close by, she still can be found behind the bar tending garden there.



Fender looks around at the muscular woman who just walked in and ordered a drink. "Yeasha there's a lady." Fender winks.

Lulu is quick to deliver drinks to all with a playful smile and sassy attitude.

Both Juicer, D-Bee's, are welcoming and friendly. If asked they say that a group of about 6 Mercs from the Black Company are investing their profits into the bar. Gotta do something when one retires!

"My story? Hrumph, last week I was in Minnesota fighting Xiticix. The month before that I was near Old Bones in Quebec. Two years prior I was in Kingsdale getting converted to a Juicer. Paid extra to get a special Juicer process. Two years a'fore that Lady I was not on this world."

Fender gets a far a way look in his eye as he makes another martini.

"It was 2088, the rich are functionally immortal, while the poor are pretty much screwed. The middle class has vanished, and you're either wealthy, or you're living on ugly, dirty streets.The damned rich, they make back-up copies of themselves, essentially.

"Humanity" now encompasses humans, Humans 2.0, simulacrums, hybrids and androids, others of fae kind, like me.

Genetic engineering is commonplace, from people who rewrite their DNA for the traits that they prefer, to people who are spliced with animal DNA to become human-animal hybrids.

Parts of that, my old world, are also pushing for the Omega Protocols, which would help prevent the fear that an AI would evolve beyond human understanding, and essentially become a bigger threat to humanity than anything before it.

The virtual world is accessed through the TAP, which virtually everyone has implanted in them, and which is also called "Interface Zero"...even poor ol' me has a data port. Not that it helps here....

It was in 2088 that people with psychic powers suddenly emerged...and no one was quite sure why how their abilities would interact with the TAP.

It was a world of nihilistic dystopia. I both miss it and am glad to kiss it g'bye. This world is....fuller.

"Spider!" Herra calls across the bar, "Save some booze for me."

Paling around with the old tattooed-man is still a little weird for the young psi-warrior but the two of them had been through it all. Besides, he was one of the only people who really understood where she was coming from. And having been bought and sold so many times, and with no idea where she is originally from, having someone who's been around for a while is as close to a connection as you got.

No wonder the drank so much.

Elbowing her way up to the bar and saddling next to Spider she pours some booze from his bottle.

"Alright then old man, we made it this far. We'll drink for a bit, then I heard we finally have a team to join." She fires the first drink down the hatch and slaps Spider on the back, "Might do us some good. You can't unsee what we've seen but maybe you can balance it out a little."

With a bold voice and confident swagger, Artemeisia crosses the room as she reaches out for a bro hug from both of the Atlantis escapees.

"I hear this is the hot spot for the valiant these days. I'm not sure how long I can stay, but a sword sheathed does no one good!"

"Hallo! Barkeep, do you have any amasec? No? Well, a stout beer will have to do instead. If I can't have a full tang, a half tang is better than nothing! Let's drink friends!" Artemeisia pats both Spider and Herra on the back like they are really excited to see her. She can think of no other option to that.

Sitting down with her offered drink Herra is about to launch into an opinion piece about the Tomorrow Legion when Artemisia shouts from across the room.

Wonder of Wonders! It seems fate has linked us together.

Sitting with the only people she has ever risked anything for Herra contemplates her own departure from Atlantis. While she helped with the escape that saved Spider's life. She herself had to stay behind to avoid their malfeasance being detected. It had been a hard pill to swallow, but shortly after that she was bought and brought to North America. Pulling the pieces together she suddenly realizes this was likely no accident. She too was given a chance for freedom.

Perhaps it is not the hand of fate after all, but certainly someone has had a hand in bringing us together.

"Welcome Artemisia! The legion will benefit from your sword no matter the length of your stay. And if not,
we benefit from your company. However, I can't help but wonder how three vagrants like us, valiant as we might be, have ended up in this place.
Pausing for a moment Herra considers who isn't here, "What news of the rest of our troupe? We were not the only ones to escape."

Artemeisia smiles at Herra, winking her good eye, not quite mocking but definitely making the joke obvious. She likes to think she is bold and daring, reckless may be more accurate, so her tale of escape is highly embellished and somewhat metaphorical. "Things quickly went ploin shaped after we got separated. Naturally, I covered the retreat, so I'm not even sure who got away. The swordplay was intense, the pistol work was no less. She takes a long drink of her hoppy beverage and says, "And that thing with those Coalition zealots led right into the thing with the Federation zealots. They all but teamed up to get me, of course there was that...thing they were after. Well, that is how I found my way here!"

"How did the two of you wind up here? Did you make it out together?" Artemeisia asks the two other ex-Atlantean residents, and she even wants to here their answer (as long as it is the short version).

Power gone?

For a long moment, Herra is quiet. She knew the Coalition was bad news, but to implant cybernetics into someone to control their magic, deplorable. There is a sad irony that forcing cybernetics on an unwilling subject was no better than the Splugorth forcing mystical tattoos onto Spider in the first place. Monsters in different skins.

Long experience in the salve pens told Herra that t-warriors love their power, became almost obsessed with it. To lose it must be shattering to one's identity. Spider's worry that he wouldn't be of value was understandable. Yet unfounded. Power is one thing, spirit is another.

"You are more than what your former masters or the the Coalition made you to be. Your contribution will come from that place where you reside. Not the shadow of yourself either of these monsters would make you to be."

Easy words Herra, she chastises herself. Yet, she is unsure how she would face the loss of her powerful abilities.

Sighing heavily she answered the question at hand, "Shortly after the escape I was sold and brought to North America to fight in a war against augmented men. Their veins flowing with powerful drugs that burned our their life force. They call them juicers. They are deadly, wild men, with nothing to lose as many of them are already serving a death sentence. Our company was overrun and I found myself leading a small band of former slaves until I caught wind of Spider's situation from another in our group. I found him in a CS prison in Arkansas and we made our way here to this Legion. So far, the are the best of what little I have seen. Although, admittedly when it comes to humans the bar is low."

Artermeisia breaks character at Spider's revelation, "What the fuck???" and then regaining her composure she in still loud, but more thoughtful. She places a hand on Spider's shoulder (making she the Mark of Heritage on the back of her hand faces away from the ex-slave), the gives him a gentle squeeze. "Do not worry, my large friend! A sword can be reforged and still be just as deadly. Your steel is still strong and resilient, or you would have laid down and died in a whimper. But no, you are here! Sharp as ever, I have no doubt. Broadsword? Falchion? Both are effective if radically different weapons."

She grabs her drink and gives him a silent salute.

"The Coalition are reprehensible, indeed," Artemeisia says turning to Herra. "As I recall there were plenty of loathsome beings occupying my home." Taking a sip of the beer as a pause, she continues, "I have seen the Earth in different times, and it is always wildly divergent, the good, the bad, the meek, the strong. It is only amplified right now, I suspect the extremes presented when the world changed polarized the population. And that is the same reason a group of heroic individuals has gathered here. We three are testament to that!"

She raises her glass high in the air (and she's tall) and exclaims for all to hear, "Let us all drink to protecting the weak and fighting evil, in all it's nefarious forms!"

Moira, not brightest of individuals, doesn't pick up on the seriousness of the conversation of the three and walks over with a big smile on her blue lips looking at everyone then settles on Spider before speaking.

"Oy there friend. Thank ye fer the drinks. It's much appreciated."

Moira is obviously very happy. Her fair skin does nothing to hide her cheeks being just a tad flush from drink.

The music continues....
"My good woman! Welcome!" Artemeisia greets the (large) newcomer. "If this man asks you to dance, you should! He is a valiant warrior, and deceptively nimble! Don't let his sombre look and dour demeanor deceive you, he has the heart of a lion! I'll show you how it's done, then your turn is next! Ha ha! Let's go Spider, my Atlantean comrade!"

Artemeisia, despite lacking any actual skill, makes up for it with her dexterity, dances with Spider until the song ends. Suspecting that Herra might not be ready for dancing, she looks again to Moira, and bows, "You're turn my lady!" She then sits back and pats Herra on the back, "Did you imagine the three of us sitting in a bar dancing with strangers? It may not be home, but I feel more at ease here than in decades. Why not since I was studying with the mad sword-saint Tsukahara Bokuden in the peaceful forests near Kyoto did I feel such a sense of peace. Of course there I was fencing 17 hours a day and meditating the other 12! I picked up a little Zen foolishness there too!"

Dance? With the Spider?

Herra knows little of dancing. Captured as a child, raised as a slave, dancing was something the masters made some girls do before they did, well, other things. And Spider, while he is a friend for sure, was also once a trainer. A hard trainer. That, of course, makes things complicated. Nonetheless, she has no desire to be a slave to her past. Standing, take a shot of liquid courage, she joins the dance.

While she has no formal "moves" as it were she moves gracefully enough. Moving in sync, stepping this way and that, flailing, turning all to the beat. Smiling at the experience she looks at Artemeisia.

So this is dancing? It's kind of like fighting, without the violence.

The white haired, old looking, Juicer known as Sgt. Severin Fell of the 1st SET pushed open the front door of the pub. His no nonsense expression moves several patrons out of his path. Standing at just over six feet, dressed in black armor under a leather greatcoat, with his Great Fellblade Chain Saw across his back the Juicer looked ready to go to war.

Ignoring the dancers, drinkers and dandies gathered in the pub he bee lines to the bar. Orders a drink. Moves over to the seat where a once mighty Cyber Knight once sat. Standing before the "Knights Only" table the Juicer looks sullen. Setting the drink down at the table where the Eldest Cyber Knight once sat the Juicer takes a step back a smile on his face.

"I will never forget you my good friend. The Eldest and Oldest! I thank you for believing in me. Believing I was better than I actually am. Thank you for protecting not only the Legion and her citizens, thank you for protecting the First. I have never met anyone else like you nor do I presume I ever will again. You will be sorely missed Sir Sayeen Gabbersleaf! Rest In Peace!!"

Fell opens his pack, pulls out a Cyber Knight's helmet and sets it down in the center of the table, careful to not actually touch the table. Reverently he straightens the helm and steps back again. Saluting the helm the Juicer yells like a drill instructor, "Thank you Sir Sergeant Sayeen of the First SET! Rest well knowing the Legion was made better by your presence."

Fell lowers his hand back to his side. Grabbing his pack the Juicer ignores everyone who might have looked over at him and wondered at his yelling as he marches out of the pub into the night leaving behind the helm.

The Helm of Sayeen. If one looked at the back of the helm (unlikely unless one was a Cyber Knight sitting at the table) they'd see the entire 1st SET signed the helmet. ~ "Your fan club!"

Jude looked over from where he was playing cards with some of the guys from the mess. Russell in particular was losing rather well. The man had such a tell!

“I’m out this hand,” Jude said, throwing down his cards. He picked up the piece of paper from in front of him. “Don’t welch on me, Russ,” he said, waving the I.O.U..

Russell looked offended, his ever-present cigarette drifting ash over the table as it dangled precariously from his mouth. “I never welch, Maverick.”

“Good. If you get in trouble with General Muckity-Muck, let me know. I’ll spin up a story. But I want those steaks and that wine for Tatiana and me tomorrow at lunch.”

Russell just grunted and threw down another terrible hand.

Slipping debt slip into his pocket, Jude walked over to the bar. “Pint,” he ordered. “Not the watered down shit.”

When the drink came, Jude picked up the glass. He walked over to the table where the Cyber-Knight’s helmet sat and stood there staring for a long moment.

“I didn’t know you half as well as you probably would have liked me to, you old geezer,” Jude said quietly. “Barely at all, really. But those words you said to me, outside of Promise...well, they kind of stuck.”

Jude shifted his feet nervously. “I don’t know if I actually am making anything of my life now, making me worth the air I’m breathing, but...I like to think I am, I have a...I don’t know, a purpose. I don’t know if I’m a better man for being here...helping people. But I hope so. And I think you for pointing me this way. I guess I’ll leave you with a little something my mother always said when she heard someone died. I don’t know what it means,” he admitted with a wry chuckle. “Some dead language, I guess, from before the rifts.”

Jude took a breath before saying,

“Requiem aeternum dona ei, Domine
Et lux perpetua luceat ei:
Requiescat in pace.
Amen.”

Jude set down the pint in front of the helmet, took a step back, and gave crispest salute he could manage.

Moira let's out a laugh and takes Spider's hand. She is always careful when touching other people even casually as she has seriously injured a few with casual contact over her many years of life. She always feels like a total tool when she has but that doesn't make it okay.

Dancing a few minutes with Spider smiling the entire time she stops when he does and walks over sitting at the stools with the three other patrons and looks at them.

"Where are me manners. Me names' Moira, Moira O'Dugan. One of the Knights of the Sidhe courts." After which she mumbles... "Not that I ev'n know if they er in this realm er not."

Cory is like a shadow behind Fell. She stays out of his way, and tries to stay out of his sight. Being here, honoring the old man is the right thing to do - this is a time where she can show some emotions beyond anger - but she does not want to comfort or be comforted by anyone else. The situation is weird enough already. Funerals, wakes, memorials, are part of the life and death cycle where the living remember the dead. Sayeen's service was appropriate, somewhat formal and vapid, but with appropriate honors for the old man. (Cory pretty much thinks anything like a funeral service is vapid, other 1st may have had a different opinion.)

The post-service, informal, remembrances take place in the public places where the dead are known. That's why Cory is in Outside Inn today, not to socialize with the team, but to remember the old man in his life as he lived it to the fullest.

She's still not over his actual killing though, and the anger at the Coalition drowns out the other emotions. She scowls and storms out, leaving an untouched drink on the table next to the helmet.

Focused on her little group of friends and potential friends, Artemeisia hears the conversation between Spider and Moira. On learning that Moira is a knight, Artemeisia gets extremely excited.

"A knight you say? I studied for a brief time with German knights from what was known to historians as the Middle Ages, roughly 10 or 12 centuries ago. I was training in a sword and buckler style using a heavier sword than the lighter blades preferred by fencers later in the Renaissance. I find that modern battles favor this style more so than the lighter weapons, the weapon and armor analogs are much closer. What type of sword style do you prefer?" Clearly Artemeisia is under the impression that Moira is interested in fencing. She is positively beaming at the prospect.

"Aye. Some formal training is in me background. The Avalonian styles are the ones l'm most familiar with. I have a healthy respect fer the sabre and buckler and the Highland claymore but as denizen of Inismore fisticuffs is wer' most my training lays. O'er the centuries though I have traveled with many a great swordsmen who were willing to pass some knowledge to a fellow adventurer."

"Since me pappy was a Sidhe troll I ne'er really needed armor 'an weapons much but they are still fun"


Moira smiles brightly swigging her ale and lifts the now empty glass towards the bartender "Another pint if'n you don't mind lass"

Moira then turns back to the conversation. "From what I can gather these Germans 'er the people from the same area as a place called Eisen w'ere I came from. Their main fighting style used a hefly broadsword 'an a metal gauntlet called a Panzer hand. A very interesting style to see in action. I had a rather close relationship with the trainer of that school."

OUTSIDE THE OUTSIDE INN

As Cory storms out of the Outside Inn Bar she sees a shadow of a man, sitting on an old hovorcycle, just out of the light cast down around the bar in the deepest of night. The street is actually very well lighted at night, to be sitting in shadows took forethought.

Turning on the ignition of the old Desert Fox Hovercycle, the headlights turn on as the machine hums to life. No longer cast in darkness Cory can see the Juicer Fell sitting on the 'cycle. Stepping off the back end of the 'cycle Fell points at the old machine as is hums healthily considering its appearance. "I borrowed this from Logun. To be honest. I. Heh, I suck at piloting or driving. I always end up being the guy who wishes he was driving but ends up as passenger. That's okay though, lets me concentrate on other things like shooting or. Never mind. Listen Cory Tetrascroll I'm never going to be, quote, over his death. He had a magical sort of presence in my short life. But, I am tired of hurting. After tonight I am putting his memories away and filing them as positive memories. The bad I'm tossing. Just keeping the good. Sayeen was ... good. It is time to move forward and carry on as a SET team. So, I need a distraction. I need to get back to my live fast, die young, try not to die! The 'cycle. You can pilot it. Would you like to take it for a spin? May I ride bi..err..back seat?"

Moving to his right Fell drops his pack and long coat by the bench outside the Bar. Running his fingers through his white hair he smiles.

"What do you say Cory. Wanna have some fun? If I could fly you around I would, but instead, are you interested in driving us as fast as you are willing around the castle? Maybe cause a ruckus and upset some security guys on patrol. Lets be a little bad before we head out to be good guys. Lets rocket through the camp of the mercenaries over there and spook them, lets burn."

Laughing Severin waits to see if Cory is game.

There were too many happy people in the Outskirts. Too many loud happy people. Cory's town had two bars. One that was for having a good time, and one where people went to be alone with a stiff drink or seven. The Outskirts is not the latter. She watched more people dancing. She watched people being care free and boisterous. The formed in knots of camaraderie, sharing common histories and common bonds. She almost blasted the whole scene with a gout of fire.

Turning in disgust - she was more disgusted with herself actually - she made her way to the exit, hoping it was raining. She was playing with a crackling, sputtering of fire between her fingertips as she left, her mind lost somewhere that wasn't the present.

So when shadowy man shines a bright headlight in her face her first reaction is to fry the asshole. Thankfully, an instinctual bolt of destructive sun fire isn't as powerful as the kind she tends to overuse in the field.

Which means Fell survives. The headlight doesn't.

She stares and him and fumes, feeling like she's the one with reason to be pissed, even though she just burned Fell's new mowhawk down to the stinky scorched stubble of male pattern baldness.

"Fell, you are an asshole."

But she doesn't move. Yet.

How does this keep happening?

"Look, dickhead, I don't want to ride a hoverbike with you okay? But let's go steal something a little bigger and the rest of your plan is sounds okay."

She hustles off to the hangar, she had seen some hover jeeps there when she had a wingboard to store... Anyway, she had only minor problem distracted the guards with a pink bunny and breaking into the computer was no sweat. She made sure to take one of the unarmed ones though, stealing an unarmed vehicle is a prank, stealing an armed one is something much worse. She she and fell go rocketing out of the hanger and off to mischief.

Fell shrugs, looks at the damaged Cycle and snorts, "Alright. Lets see what you can come up with Princess. Lead on."

Fell follows Cory into the hanger bay of the Castle. Letting her take the lead, the Juicer follows her. As the two of them rocket out of the bay in the "stolen" vehicle Fell laughs loud.

With a smile on his face the Juicer holds onto the racing vehicle as it screams across the land. Leaning towards Cory, Fell says:

"I dare you to rip this baby across the front door of the Bar. I have this pesky grenade I need to toss before it blows. I seem to have misplaced the pin." Fell drops the pin overboard as Cory pilots them along. "Hmm, six seconds and it blows." Fell holds the grenade out and away from himself chuckling.

As Cory rips along Fell absently points at the Bar. "Shall we?"

Presuming Cory does fly by the Bar (or if not so be it) Fell waits six seconds and tosses the grenade as close to the Bar's front door as possible.

The reddish smoke grenade explodes in a plumb of thick smoke as the Juicer bursts out in fits of laughter.

Looking across the vehicle at Cory, Fell says:

"You should smile more. I saw you smile when you fired this pig up, stealing it, you were happy. Happy looks good on you. Lets blow this place. Lets burn out there into the wild woods and chase some Rhino Buffalo or something. I got a hint of whats to come, our next mission. We should have one night of fun first."

Standing up in his seat the Juicer hoots and throws his hands up in the air.

Beaming with pride after being accepted into the 7th Jacob walks into the pub. Jacob is an extremely rotund 9 foot tall grackle tooth. He moves around with a grace that almost seems unnatural for his size, perhaps because of many years spent in cockpits and working in spaces designed for people much smaller than him.

"Hey y'all! You's guys 'r looking at the newest member of the 7th. Me and Sasha are super excited to be working in the legion. I's hearing this place has good meats and drinks?!"

Jacob plops down on the bar stool. It bends with his weight. Then he picks up a menu to take a look.

Hmm...That looks good. I think I will order at least two of those and maybe all three of these appetizers.

"Bartender! Whatcha reckon you's guys can cook up in bulk? I'm preferrin meats and cheeses or something deep fried. They's aint callin' me Snack Happy for no reason. If you knows what I mean."

Jacob begins looking around the room. Wonder who else in this place I might be workin with.

Looking like she is in a daze, likely drug induced from boredom, Lulu starts at Snacks statement. The Ogre Female Juicer and co-owner of the Pub looks up at Snack and her eyes focus.

Oh I'm going to make bank on this fellow.

Grinning Lulu attends to Snack Happy with gusto, "Hi! Welcome. Oh I adore scales! Mmmm, oh, Rhino Buffalo Burgers are A Double U some here! First drinks on me handsome. Settle in hero, you say you're a SET member?"

Across the room a burly male ogre juicer eyes the joint but stays quiet. The Pub is pretty full tonight. Lots of people visiting. Might have had something to do with the earlier smoke bomb pyrotechnics out front but the Pub definitely seems to be the place to be tonight.
