Another Day in the Desert Sun

Grimes motioned to the combat robot to stop the Mountaineer APC. Several of the others groaned from the rear carrier area. Mutters of, what now … again … are we there yet were heard by Grimes as he popped open the front passenger door and told DV8 to stay put.

A short climb down the side ladder and he stood in the desert air looking at the small canyon ahead. There were no roads, and everything was a path of sorts out here. They were following compass directions pretty much. Desert grasslands with hills. Everywhere. Grimes resolved that when they finished their mission in Mexico, he would take the next assignment he could get somewhere in Canada.

Taking several steps closer to the small canyon he frowned. It looked like a good place to set up an ambush. Donning his EBA armor’s helmet he toggled comms and requested a sit rep and fly over from the RedHawk RPA pilot.

Confirmation came a few moments later as the pilot zoomed over the area, circled a few times and reported back, no sign of anything obviously dangerous, but no promises. Nodding at that Grimes thought about it. No promises. No matter how safe anything looked there could be hidden dangers.

He hiked the eighty feet (24 meters) to the opening of the canyon. Eyeing the area, he was just about to turn away and return to the APC so that they could continue on when a glitter of light caught his eye.

Unholstering his sidearm he cautiously moved closer. Kicking some dirt and debris located at the side of the path he saw a hand. Kicking away at it some more he saw the hand was connected to a arm and then the rest of the dead body came into view as he carefully brushed dirt off it. The Temperature Cloak looked to be in pretty good shape other than it was dirty from laying here for so long. Pulling the cloak off the corpse Grimes took it and walked back to the APC.

The RPA pilot radioed down, ”Incoming. Several hovercycles with banditos riding on them. Mostly D-Bee’s it looked like.”

Grimes grinned. Several soon to be dead banditos if they continued to advance towards the undercover CS Force Recon team.

See below post. DV finds the Scope. Henry finds this:

Temperature Cloak: This advanced variant of all-weather gear is a waterproof cloak, poncho, or duster with a series of layers designed to dissipate or retain heat depending on the environment. The wearer adds a +4 bonus to rolls versus Cold or Heat (2 lb., 2,000 credits).

Treasures in the Sand

The combat robot designated DV8 sat back against the sandy hill side and watched. The humans were all taking a midday break. Staying in the shade, eating, and drinking water. As they stretched and yawned, several looked at the things they had located today. It had been a good day for finding treasures in the sand, looting D-Bee’s and such.

DV8 had full sensors going and was the lookout. Even the RPA pilot had landed for a while to cool his engines and get some water. Only Grimes wasn’t resting. DV8 watched the SSgt as he practiced with the APC, familiarizing himself with operation of the vehicle. It was obvious the man was learning to drive and did not like letting the robot drive unassisted.

Had DV8 been a moral being he might have felt offended by the distrust, as it was the robot had no thoughts on the matter. DV did not tire, did not care, and was one hundred percent loyal to Grimes. His programming demanded it. As an infrequent breeze flittered by the robot put his metal hand to his head to hold the large floppy sombrero on his head. The robot was sporting the large hat with a big metal pin at the front that read: No Juan Cares. The heavy colorful woven fabric of the poncho covered most of his metal upper body. DV had the railgun across his back and was holding the chain saw in his left hand.

The light breeze caused the sand on the rock shelf next to the robot to move. It rained down and uncovered something metal. The robot pulled the scope off the rocks and looked it over. The railgun he carried already had a scope.

Keeping the sensor suit going, still on watch, DV multitasked and made the rounds to the other CS troops. He offered the scope to anyone who would want it.

Interlude - Your hero spends time alone in quiet contemplation. What does she do?

The APC allowed all terrain access across the desert wastes south of New Del Rio as they crossed the border into what was once known as Mexico during the Golden Age of Man. Frida had picked up a bit of Spanish during her time in Odessa, a language often spoken by the Pecos bandits who performed raids on the area. Hopefully they would be able to communicate with the locals in the event mechanical attempts at translation failed.

The large bump they hit as the APC rolled over an armadillo jostled her awake, not realizing she had dozed off during her contemplation while stuffed inside of her EBA and buckled into the side of the wall seat. Twisting her head to look towards the robot that gave no reaction at all to the obstruction as it continued its path in a straight line. The unlucky creature had probably registered as just shy of the surface area required to indicate to the machine that it was something that needed to be circumvented.

Frida’s gaze rested then on the robots owner, Sergeant Grimes, the somewhat flamboyant NCO she had actually running the day to day operations of the squadron. Somehow, him seeming both incompetent and highly capable at the same time in an odd duality opposed with itself. He had given no reaction at her announcement that the voice who they had thought was Lyboc was an imposter, despite the implications that could have had for their entire mission. She didn’t expect him to be an expert in electromagnetic wave physics and to fully understand the effect that the phenomenon known as “Leylines” had on the range of wireless communication signals, but even a layman knew that the range of such rarely exceeded 100 miles, and even then to go farther it needed infrastructure only seen in areas of actual civilization.

Did he already know? Frida thought to herself as she once again tried to get a read on him. The only other possibility would have been that Lyboc himself had been within the city, or very near it as well and had for some strange reason followed them there. Still, his intel had proven to be unreliable and inaccurate, which was stranger still given that he would have been able to see such with his own eyes if such were the case. Which meant that her earlier theory that the message had been transmitted in an attempt to catch them off guard was probably true.

Which means... Our house isn’t in order. The lieutenant thought as she looked over the others that had quietly gathered inside. She didn’t want to think about the idea that one of them might be a traitor, but it was the only explanation she could think of. Someone had distributed their encryption codes, allowing for another party to listen in on all of their communications and then carelessly attempt a false flag on them.

Mr. Marvin seemed like the obvious candidate, his evasive distracting speech, odd d-bee contacts this far south, a completely redacted profile while seeming to disappear for hours on end. But there was such an orgy of evidence mounted against him that the idea would be laughable to anyone with half a brain. Someone wanted him to appear as a traitor, and was obviously set to be the scapegoat should anything go wrong.

Runt had gone missing, the Mega Juicers profile showing that he had survived countless battles where no one reasonably should have, made it highly suspicious that he would suddenly vanish during a panicked mob and a few vampires that had ambushed them. Still, dog boys were intensely loyal to a fault and it would almost be genetically impossible for him to turn on the Coalition or even just a squad that had adopted him as “His pack”.

The roar of jets outside as Jackson scouted overhead reminded her of their new arrival. He also seemed to be unlikely given that he had only just arrived. There wouldn’t have been any time for him to have caused a leak... Which left Checkers and Klanker as the only two she couldn’t fully discount, the two of them certainly didn’t seem like spies and had the combined subtlety of a pack of Ostrasaurus between them, but that would make for the perfect cover as well.

Henry had been quick to dispatch of Calvin Mason, indicating that he could have been the problem. But he had as well only just arrived, though it was possible that he had been working closely with the traitor and Henry had disposed of him when he became no longer necessary. Could it really be her own Sergeant that had been a mole within their ranks...?

Reaching into her medical bag, Frida popped a tranquilizer into her mouth, causing her beating heart to calm down as she regained her composure from the paranoia that was slowly creeping its way into her psyche. She didn’t have enough information to go on to make a definitive decision... She needed to do something unexpected and see if they could be flushed out.

Flipping on her radio, she broadcast to all members her intent. ”Jade Eagle company, this is Bishop.” She spoke out, using the cover name for their “mercenary company” that she had abruptly decided on back in New Del Rio. ”O Group at next camp once we've finished dealing with these bandits, I have information to promulgate.”

The words weren’t exactly inspiring or elegant sounding, but she didn’t care at that point. It was going to be an interesting evening...

2d6*10*10*10: [3, 1]*10*10*10 = 4000

While continuing on their journey, the APC would suddenly lurch in place as if it had hit something. The vehicle had come to a stop but the engine continued to attempt to push it forward, allowing it to only inch forward bit by bit. Eventually Frida called for a full halt as everyone got out of the back of the APC to see what sort of obstruction they had hit.

The back wheels of the vehicle had been completely tangled up in some sort of prehensile nano carbon wire, the strength of the material proving to be unbreakable even when compared to the strength of the vehicle propelling the device. As @Checkers moved to cut the damn thing off with his vibro-bayonet, Frida held up her hand to stop him as she considered the situation.

If the cord was in this good of a condition after who knows how long it had been laying out there, then it would be worth the couple of hours it would take to disentangle it from the axle properly and coil it back up. They didn’t know exactly what they would be faced against in the coming days, and an item as useful as this might be just what they needed in a pinch.

Eventually the source of the Grapnel & Launcher was found, neatly coiled up and added to their equipment stores. Such a device had multiple potential uses, to allowing the less athletic people such as herself to climb buildings with ease or even allowing larger members of her team such as @Klanker and Checkers to entangle and capture opponents that they needed alive. She would check with the two of them first if they could make use of it, otherwise would equip it on herself.

The rubble the other end of the device had been caught in revealed that it had once been the remains of a fort or other similar structure where some long ago skirmish had taken place. Once the boulders had been cleared by the stronger members of their group, a sealed metal case containing 3lbs of MD Plastique lay next to it intact. It appearing as if whoever held it hadn’t received the chance to use it before getting killed themselves. She hoped that such wouldn’t be their fate as well as they brought the case into the APC and went on their way.

A post just because….

SSgt Grimes was about to point out the little armadillo.

Thump.

Rubbing his temples he decided it wasn’t worth mentioning to the combat bot. Why bother. Grimes was still practicing at driving the APC but was resolute he would learn the skill needed to operate the big vehicle. He did have a kind of Jack of all trades knack for picking up skills on the fly.

Part of the reason Joseph Prosek had picked him. Lyboc was up to something nefarious here. Henry’s job was to make sure the First Force Recon succeeded at any cost and Lyboc didn’t double cross the best interest of the Coalition States.

Henry thought about the Switcheroo the office of High Command had put into play to just get him assigned to the team. Insane. He preferred less messy infiltration.

A gardener accidentally assigned to Special Forces — who was not actually a gardener but a undercover operative for High Command. Plus no one in the team would know about it? Messy. But. He was here now.

He rather liked the entire team. Unfortunately one was a spy working for Lyboc.

Henry considered actually standing up and telling everyone his name, Zero One Niner. The spy would undoubtedly react then he could kill them and carry on with this mission.

Two thoughts occurred to him. One, he’d been using the code name Zero so long he tended to never even think about his birth name anymore. Probably for the best. Two, he couldn’t and wouldn’t let any of this crew know he was from High Command. That kind of information got people killed fast. Henry didn’t want any of the crew killed because they knew. So. Secret it would stay.

Lyboc. Hmm. It surprised Henry that the lieutenant hadn’t pushed the conversation about Lyboc. Henry had attempted to manipulate things subtly as being hectic and just sort of not responded to her statement.

As he was thinking of the lieutenant the radio crackled and said lieutenant broadcast to all members, “Jade Eagle company, this is Bishop.” Henry frowned at the name. Then shrugged. It wasn’t too bad. ”O Group at next camp, I have information to promulgate.”

He found himself rubbing his temples again. This was the problem with education. No one ever knew what smart people were saying.

Promulgate. It meant something like: lying stretched out on the ground with one's face downward, or something. Prosek’s balls who knew what she meant.

Flipping on comms: “You knuckle heads that don’t understand just stand by to standby and be extra vigilant when the boss lays down the word. Shut it Checkers I can hear your grin from here. Klanker?! You even awake? Somebody put a seatbelt on Marvin before he falls out of that seat.”

Flipping off the radio Henry brooded on the topic of the radio transponders. He knew how to mess with them. But. It had not been him. Who’d sold them out?

Frustrated he ran his hands through his hair to brush it out if his face and said: “DV8! Watch where you’re going!”

The APC collided with and rolled over another armadillo.

Thump.

Grumbling Henry shook his head.

Missions always go sideways. Everyone's running, but we got the asset. Dragon's a problem.

Runt uses his juicer speed to stay near the dragon while doing his best to use buildings for cover and remain unseen. The team will need to regroup and are vulnerable until they do. The highest priority threat...overhead.

The dragon swoops in low. Runt isn't sure who the beast is targetting, but it doesn't matter. Runt jumps onto the nearby building and launches himself at the dragon.

The wily creature is more observant than Runt was expecting. Its long sinewy neck whips its head into to the mega juicer's path and gobbles him up. 'Well, shit. Time to make like a chicken bone.'

Halfway down the creature's gullet, Runt manages to get one of his vibro hachets in each hand. He's not unfamiliar with mountain climbing, but this is one environment he never intended to traverse.

He spent untold hours, minutes, days or seconds inside the dragon. It was, to date, his most harrowing struggle. One slip from death. He wasn't sure who would tire first, but he was determined not to be first.

Intentions aside, the dragon's meal didn't sit well with it. Runt found himself forcefully ejected from the dragon in a powerful blast of air and fire. He hit the desert scorched, concussed, contused and exhausted.

It takes time to track the team down, but with his training and dog boy senses Runt manages. He walks into camp with hands held high. Comms went down sometime between being eaten, burned and dropped from the sky.

"Sergeant Runt reporting for Duty," Runt growls out in his deep voice.

When Lieutenant Frida is satisfied with his report, the dog boy finds a quiet corner to bed down and sleeps like the dead.
Runt, Dog Boy Mega-Juicer
Pace: 14(d8); Parry: 6; Toughness: 17(5); Burn: 7/8 (d6)
In order to keep the Juicer from burning out over a matter of days, the bio-comp constantly supplies a combination of psychotropic drugs and chemical inhibitors to keep him happy and calm. Juicers live in a state somewhere between mildly ecstatic and stoned, which causes −1 to all Smarts or Smarts- linked skill rolls in non-combat or low stress situations. On the first round of an unexpected combat or high-stress situation, the Juicer doesn’t gain the benefits of Uncanny Reflexes or Quick.
,
The bio-comp system managing the drugs and chemicals within the Juicer’s body also works overtime to ensure his continued health and good repair. The Juicer gains Slow Regeneration (a natural healing roll once per day). There’s a continuously replenishing supply of nanites and chemical concoctions available for “emergency repairs.” As an action, the Juicer can make a natural healing roll at +2 to heal Wounds; this costs one charge. The system holds a maximum of three charges and requires eight hours to recover one charge.
,
–2 to actions at 5″ (10 yards) or more distance.
,
The hero may discard and redraw Action Cards of 5 or lower.
,
This Edge allows Juicers to ignore 2 points of Multi-Action penalties each turn (they can perform two actions at no penalty or three at −2 each).
,
Juicer reflexes are superhuman, granting them −2 to be hit by any attack they are aware of and +2 on Evasion rolls.
,
Unstoppable targets never suffer more than one Wound from a single attack; make any Soak rolls before applying this limit.

One benefit of this new juicer treatment that Runt enjoys most is needing less sleep to function. He wakes to a mostly silent camp feeling mostly refreshed. He's missing some patches of fur from his encounter with the dragon, and he's still somewhat disoriented from his fall. Not too bad, all things considered, so the dog boy tells the lieutenant that he's going to scout the area before breaking camp.

Just before turning around to head back to camp, Runt spots some kind of wreckage. He moves in to inspect it. It's a mostly destroyed mountaineer. Claw marks score almost every exterior surface, and one of the doors looks to have been ripped off.

Inside and around the mountaineer, Runt finds enough body parts for six to seven people. The dog boy doesn't find anythig salvageable, but under the torso of one of the corpses he does find
2d6x1000: [5, 2] = 7
clipped to the deceased's harness.

Satisfied that there's nothing left to do but report in, Runt hoofs it back to camp to report in to the lieutenant.

  • Runnnt!!
Henry was resting. Lost in his own thoughts. Lazily laying in the shade in the hot desert. His mind drifted.

Looking back from 110 PA [The Jungles Game]. Henry Grimes had been many people.

SSgt Henry Anson Grimes, Captain Jason Reed, Private Thomas Zane, Lieutenant Issac Harrison, Agent Zero One Niner, and originally Captain Hudson Lindsey Sawyer.

Hudson Lindsey Sawyer being his actual birth name. [But for simplicity sake, and because it’s his current ’face’ I shall refer to him as Henry].

Internal Security Specialist Hudson Sawyer was the son of Brigadier General Thomas Grant Sawyer. The General is a close friend of the CS Emperor. Thus young Hudson and Joseph grew up together and became good friends.

When Joseph needed an inside man. An Agent who he could trusted. Someone absolutely loyal. He made contact with Hudson.

Now Henry has a good decade plus playing spy, agent and infiltrator.

The item or device the First Recon was after was important enough that he had been asked to oversee its retrieval.

The commotion at the edge of camp roused his mind.

Standing up and brushing his armor off he looked at Lieutenant Frida who was talking to Runt. To Runt!

Henry almost yelled with excitement. The Dog Boy Juicer had been a valuable and reliable Sergeant. Henry also quite liked the fellow. Runt was an inspiration. To Henry and the others of the Special Forces unit. Seeing the dog boy back made his heart happy.

Striding over to Runt, SSgt Henry Grimes waited until the juicer had finished reporting in to the lieutenant. Once done Henry took a deep breath in then bellowed: ”What in tarn’nation have you been off doing?! You think you’re somehow special because you gave indigestion to a damned dragon? Blazing hells and Proseks Balls Runt I need you here keeping the Corporals in line. I’ve actually had to talk to them in your absence! Get a patrol and watch set up! Go!”

As Runt moves to act Henry grabs the dog boys shoulder and very quietly says: ”I’m glad you are okay.”

Turning away Henry walks towards the lieutenant.

”Ma’am! A moment!”

Leaving Runt behind the Staff Sergeant moves away talking to the lieutenant.
