0.1 The Journey (Interlude and Open Role Play)

Post by Ndreare »

Within Dweomer few are given the opportunity to interact with the Magi. Those who do remember it, their souls touched by the nature of those beings.

You were approached, contacted through agents of the Magi and asked to help with a mission of importance to them. In the briefing you where told of a powerful artifact linked to the sun hidden within the Vampire Kingdoms. The visions brought to the Magi where not as clear as they would like, but the results where the same. The artifact should not be allowed to fall within mortal hands, it must be destroyed.

Now as you journey south with this mission you find there is not only time to visit with others, but time to think back on that contact. The moment a god reached out and communicated directly with your mind...

Instructions
Earn a Benny: Write an interlude of how you became loyal to the Magi. What brought you to their service? Then tag both Technospawn and Ndreare in the post.
Earn a Second Benny: Write an interlude of the Magi reaching out to you. How did they communicate with you? Was it direct communications, visions in your mind, or an agent reaching out and explaining to you what is needed and the danger? Then tag both Technospawn and Ndreare in the post.
Earn Explorer Points: In the end you were instructed on who to meet up with and are now in their presence. This is also an Open Role Play thread and please feel free to post and enjoy each other's time. No need to Tag the GMs here, we count the post using a search feature.
  • 2D6 EFFECT
2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

INTERLUDE ONE

Earn a Benny: Write an interlude of how you became loyal to the Magi. What brought you to their service? Then tag both @Technospawn and @Ndreare in the post.

Setrakian doesn’t miss the days before he found his best friend Zurathas @Snake Eyes, the dragon who is a constant companion.

Back in the day so to say Setrakian was a low level Shifter. New to the city of Dweomer. Originally from a small Fade Town that rippled across the Magic Zone with an occasional fade into the swamps of Florida Setrakian was born to Shifter parents and has a Techno Wizard sister, the black sheep in the family for not being a Shifter.

As a young Shifter Setrakian sought adventure in the city of Dweomer. Frustrated at not being excepted into several better known outfits operating in the city he finally landed a gig with Have Mages, Will Travel.

Have Mages, Will Travel is a temporary employment agency that supplies Magic users for hire. Although Have Mages, Will Travel sometimes competes with other groups for the same assignments, generally they get along with the other companies in the city, although they are rivals and often don’t get along.

Have Mages, Will Travel usually charge lower rates which meant that they almost never offered a guarantee on the quality of their work. Setrakian learned over time that the company actually was not a very good company to be working for. Several times while on missions Have Mages, Will Travel had a call upon other magic using companies to get them out of trouble.

Lack of new spell knowledge, becoming disillusioned with the whole magic thing, when the CS vs. Tolkeen war erupted Setrakian marched straight to the Dweomer military forces and signed up to fight.

After pledging service to the Magi and their city, before being sent to the fight, he was approached by one of the Magi who requested Setrakian submit to an experimental new process. Dragon Juicer augmentation.

Already exhausted at the study of Magic, and having a bloodier demeanor he agreed. Setrakian was one of the first few to become Dragon Juicers in the military of the city of the Magi.

After rescuing and befriending Zurathas in Tolkeen the two returned to Dweomer. When asked to endeavor on a new mission Setrakian eagerly agreed.

The Lords of Magic. The Mighty Three. Defenders of Dweomer. Although each of the three are said to be equal, Brethan is clearly their spokesman, it is he who usually addresses the people, giving voice to the decisions, ethics, opinions, laws, and advice of the three.

So it is, that when Coran, a natural at military strategy and tactics, a strong leader and a deadly warrior, approached Setrakian, the Dragon Juicer was truly honored to be visited by the god referred to as Coran the Avenger and Master of the Brotherhood of Battle.

Welding a giant magic battle sword, armor aflame, all 16 ft. of war god approached the Juicer as he and Zurathas @Snake Eyes Eyes were returning from a patrol around the city of Dweomer.

There would never be anyone or anything Setrakian would ever place before his friend Zurathas but the mere voice of the gif did make the Dragon Juicer shutter. His heart speed up as the bio comp tapered his amping up.

The calm, commanding and deep voice of the Avenger spoke: ”Setrakian. Zurathas. The Three call on you once again. Come if you please.”

After the meeting with all Three, they’d agreed to go on the mission to South America.

Understanding the dangers, for Setrakian it was more important to him that the Legion and especially the CS be stopped. All too much he remembered the horrible things the CS did in Tolkeen. To the city. To its people. To Zurathas!!

The city of Dweomer might be thought of as a more militant and aggressive version of Lazlo. It is the largest and most powerful kingdom in the magic zone, and with Tolkeen gone, it is the second largest magic community in North America; only Lazlo is larger.

One of the mini marvels of the city is what is referred to as the Great Dweomer Wall. The first line of defense for the city, it’s majestic tall walls surrounded the city. Just inside this wall, within the city, you here is a small cafe that caters to human, D-Bee and all with equality and serves amazing drink and food.

The Boarder Cafe. Looking almost like a cross between a depot and a magic local wizards house it was renowned as a place to gather with friends and enjoy the spirits, of all kinds or a warm Java. The building had a magic in nature spell cast upon it that caused a perpetual light rain to cascade down over the garden adjacent the outdoor seating area. Patrons didn’t get wet but they did enjoy the calming sound of rain.

Sitting at a large outdoor table the Dragon Juicer known as Setrakian waited. A hot drink turned cool in his hand. He waited. His best friend Zurathas @Snake Eyes would arrive soon. So would others. The Three had decreed all who would partake on this dangerous mission would converge on this establishment. They would meet. Talk. Plan. Then prepare for the next day when they would magically arrive in South America, or near it.

Setrakian waited.

INTERLUDE ONE @Technospawn @Ndreare

Cyrus rode in silence. The dust kicked up from the road was getting everywhere. He debated on activating the techno-organic filtration system in his armor.

Getting his wits back, he realized he still had a good thirty minutes before he would need to refresh his war horse tattoo that served as his mount. Knowing that, his thoughts drifted to the Magi. He owed them everything. Without their intervention, he would surely have continued to serve the Splugorth in the gladiator pits mentally and emotionally unhinged for the rest of his days.

Ironically, the Overlords played their part as well. If they had pushed him to the limit with magical tattoos, he probably would not have lost it when the blood and brains of that poor ogre hadn’t ended up all over Cyrus. For whatever reason, the inhumanity of that particular situation made him snap. He turned and lashed out at the guards and fought his way to a tentative freedom.

From there it was a blur, one comprised contact after the next. Always running, always looking over your shoulder. Could anyone be trusted?
The Magi could.

He thought he had been caught. He had secured passage to North America and was so close when, as with every time before, the minions of the Splugorth ended up being one step ahead. This time as Cyrus was being dragged through the streets of Splynn, he bumped what appeared to be some sort of magic user browsing esoteric wares in the Dimensional Market. To Cyrus, it was like hitting a brick wall even for his alchemically toughened body. The mage jerked Cyrus to his feet by his forearm with obvious supernatural strength. Cyrus thought the mage was going to curse or immolate him on the spot—at least it would be quicker than transmutation torture—but the mage stopped and seemed to be staring at his clan tattoo, one of only two that had not been given to him by the Splugorth.

A few words in Demogogian were exchanged and some sort of transaction took place. A few dimensional gates later, Cyrus found himself in Dweomer with a new life, left with the cryptic instructions to be ready when called.

He never saw the mage again, but was set up nicely in Dweomer with gear and credits that were evidently his from a past life. At first, he thought the mage was mistaken. Cyrus had never known any life outside the pits, but research into his clan tattoo led him to discover that it was unique, belonging to the lost Tsitas Clan.

When he was finally called upon for a mission to South America, Cyrus did not hesitate to accept. By that point the visions had made it clear just how important his heritage was…

INTERLUDE TWO @Technospawn @Ndreare

Cyrus started having visions soon after he arrived in Dweomer. Visions may not have been the right word. Unlocking suppressed memories due to PTSD was more accurate. Each time he had one, it was an act of will to prevent it from adversely affecting him.

They always started the same. He was with family and friends, he assumed, discovering that Atlantis had returned, and Clan Tsitas was reuniting and returning to earth. Cyrus would be part of that initial delegation. They had learned from Clan Archerean that the American Southwest, Mexico, and South America had been overrun with vampires. No matter, Clan Tsitas had many accomplished Undead Slayers and it was their duty to establish a bulkhead to begin the extermination of the vampire threat. Cyrus looked forward to this. He had studied the best ways to kill vampires, and was considering becoming an Undead Slayer himself.

Cyrus got a sense of excitement and anticipation from these initial visions. That feeling would not last as soon things went horribly wrong.
Time would blur and skip around but the dreams would always focus on the same things…

Unspeakable horror

Underestimation of the Vampire Threat

Death and torture of friends and loved ones

Blood..so much blood

But sometimes, and more frequently as of late, the dreams would show something else, an artifact that burned with the fire of a thousand suns capable of wiping out all of the Vampire Kingdoms. It was close, it was within reach….

…and then more blood, a river of it. Cyrus was drowning in it. He believed his lungs would burst and sometimes in the dream they would, but in others he was dragged out of the river only to look down and find he was back in the slave pits covered with what was left of that poor ogre…
Cyrus would always wake up after that. What was it the Magi wanted him to remember?

OPEN RP @Technospawn @Ndreare

Cyrus had been in Dweomer close to a year at this point. It was enough time to get his mental demons under control. As he walked into the Boarder Café, he mentally categorized everyone in the room and internally debated whether or not they could be trusted.

He chuckled to himself as he realized how he looked. The cloak he wore as a poncho definitely gave him the look of a gaucho from the New West. Perhaps this was his subconscious telling him something?

Scanning the café, he looked for the rest of his team. He was told they could be trusted, so he put aside any suspicions he may have had. The dragon would likely be shapeshifted into a form suitable for the establishment. The dragon juicer should not be hard to pick out, as well as the Lyn-Srial. He had never seen a Lyn-Srial before—at least not that he remembered. The other member was said to be a Temporal Warrior. Maybe he had encountered Clan Tsitas in his dimensional travels?

Before Cyrus could consider that possibility further, he spotted the dragon juicer. He seemed to be alone, but he had to be the one. Cyrus walked over to the table and sat down.

He addressed the Dragon Juicer, “I assume you are here for the same reasons I am?”

How I learned to stop worrying and love the Magi
@Ndreare and @Technospawn
He is not the kind to break a vow. Particularly to one who saved his life. So it was that Zurathas remained beside his friend @Set after the fall of Tolkeen. That carried him to Dweomer. And if Setrakian serves the Magi, then Zurathas would join him. After all, what wonders are held in this city for such a magnificent creature as Zurathas to study? Membership has its privileges. Zurathas wanders boldly around the city, stopping in every library he can find. Service to the Magi is hardly an inconvenience in light of this. Set and Zurathas have had many adventures in the service of Dweomer. Long may they continue!

Go south, young dragon
@Ndreare and @Technospawn
"I tore that metal shelled peon in two. Did you see that?" The dragon called back to his friend @Set, the rumble of his voice carried on the wind as they flew together back towards the city. Having just picked off a lost CS patrol, the two were returning to the city of Dweomer to give a report of their excursion into the field. They did not make it all the way home, though, as just before they reached the gates of the city, Coran The Avenger appeared to them.

"The Three call on you once again. Come if you please."
Of course they would. Even on Zurathas' best day, he was but a whelp before this deity. This was not an invitation to be declined.

Led into secret and sacred chambers, the dragon and the dragon juicer stood before threefold ultimate power. The Magi laid out what details of the object they saw fit to share, and what their instructions for the pair were.
The dragon spoke boldly. "We will see it done without fail." The Magi, satisfied with the answer, sent the dragonblooded into the city again to rendezvous with several associates.

RP
@Technospawn and @Ndreare
He much preferred his natural form. Why wouldn't anyone jump at the opportunity to gaze in awe at such a specimen as Zurathas the dragon? Still, in the interest of not being mobbed by worshipers and making him late, he walked through the crowd wearing the
Zurathas human form.jpg
and dressed in his typically understated manner (which draws its own share of looks.)

He strolls into the Boarder Cafe and waves at his friend @Set. "You are early!" He moves to find a seat, taking care not to knock @Cyrus Cyrillus over as he brushes past, manners barely an afterthought. Zurathas makes a curt request of the Atlantean. "Excuse me. I want tea." He sits next to the juicer, then looks back up at Cyrus. "Did you not hear? Tea. Chai tea." Setrakian gives the metamorphosed dragon a vigorous nudge. He realizes his error. "Oh. You are not employed here? Fine. Sit, then, if you have been sent to assist us." He gestures to an open seat at the table, then addresses Cyrus in a slightly more cordial tone. "I am Zurathas. This is my good friend Setrakian. What are you called?" He taps his fingers, idly yet vigorously, on the table.

@Snake Eyes @Cyrus Cyrillus

More RP

“I assume you are here for the same reasons I am?”

Setrakian slowly looks over at the uniquely dressed man noting the tattoos.

“To crush our enemies, to see them driven before us, and to hear the lamentations of their women … I assume you mean?”

A cold stoic face gazes upon Cyrus. A moment later the Dragon Juicer cracks a smile and winks at the man.

Zurathas arrives and the juicer stops drumming his fingers on the table, visibly more relaxed once he is here.

Setrakian smirks at Zurathas when he orders tea, from Cyrus.

As a waitress wanders near the table Set calls out: ”Chi Tea’s all around. On my tab. What? Then start me a tab. I appreciate your stunned look and your beautiful eyes woman. Go on. There ya go. Go get us Chi Tea now please. There go. Thank you.”

After Zurathas introduces them Set says, ”Yes. I am Setrakian. I also am a dragon. Just younger than the mighty Zurathas. We are brothers. Your name?”

Setrakian says this in a tone that leaves one wondering just how serious he is.

Cyrus extends his right arm to shake hands, almost purposely displaying a tattoo of a sea serpent coiled around a silver harpoon.

"I am Cyrus, and yes I believe we are here for the same thing. I appreciate the Chai Tea, and no offense taken, you cannot be too careful."

Cyrus does not appear to react to the dragon juicer claiming he is an actual dragon. The T-Man knew far too well the side effects of alchemical processes. If Setrakian believed he was a dragon, then who was Cyrus to question it?

"I understand we are traveling deep into Mexico and perhaps South America. Have either of you been there before?"

Zurathas shakes his head at @Cyrus Cyrillus. "I am wise beyond my days, but my journeys have not taken me that far south yet. I look forward to the experience. Knowledge is power, and I have the luxury of centuries to learn." He glances at his juicer friend @Set. "And so does my brother. Right?"

Setrakian nods.

“My soul is bound to Zurathas forever.”

Looking around the Dragon Juicer frowns.

“The others are late. That disappoints. Cyrus as far as South America, no, never been.”

Signaling the waitress once more Set order another round.

Vroches walks in to one of the last to join the group. Scanning he looks for the faces shared with him by his master. Vroches is happy to see they are all gathered together already making introductions.

Grabbing a whiskey from the bar before heading over he nods to the group. "Late? I am here right when I was told to be here. Perhaps you are prized enough you were asked to be early so that you could observe our arrival?" Then offering the first round of shots to the table as he sits. "I am Vroches, a servant of the Magus. Looks like we will be working together."

Grabbing a seat, he goes through introductions with the team. When the 'brothers' introduce themselves as such he is unable to conceal his surprise. Why would they send a madman? Will his strength be needed?

Vroches seems willing to jump in on the conversation, but not eager to. Instead waiting for an appropriate time to compliment or interject. Ordering the next round and paying for it himself.

As Vroches chats, Setrakian eyes the odd duck.

”Mmm, so Vroches you have any idea who else is going to be joining us? The Three stated Zurathas and I were vital to the success of the mission but didn’t say who’d exactly be coming along to help Commander Zurathas.”

Grinning like a wild eyed madman the Juicer takes another sip of his chai tea.

Zurathas reaches for the shot of whiskey offered by @Vroches. He tips it into his mouth, mulls the liquid over his tongue, then swallows. "This is scratchy. Warm, though. Interesting." He hands the glass back to Vroches. Cleaning is clearly beneath the dragon. "Have you tried chai?"
He grins as @Set calls him "commander." He puffs out his chest. "I bet we could defeat nearly any challenge just with everyone here. Do we need more than this?"

Vroches nods. "I brought a vehicle for us, but I am guessing dragons do not need to ride in vehicles. So perhaps @Cyrus Cyrillus and I will be the only ones needing the shelter it represents."

Accepting the glass back awkwardly from @Zurathas, @Vroches sets it back down on the table. "I have tried Chai, but my preference is whiskey, and coffee."

Thinking to @Set's comment he tilts is head a little to far to be natural as if a cross between the common gesture for thought and a broken neck. "I do not know, I was told there would be another here ready to leave with us. Perhaps it is not quite time for us?"

How the hell do you hide from someone who can bend time and space to their will?

Work for some else who can do it better.

That of course left the question of who was better than Kal-kek?

Putting our feelers against your old boss isn't easy, especially when he was a mind sucking alien with a grudge. But i did it anyway, low key, or so I thought. It wasn't looking good though. No one wanted to touch me unless the incur Kal-kek's wrath. Then it hit me. Literally.

Holed up in the lower levels of Centre, hiding among the throngs of people from all over the megaverse I was hit with a vision. So strong it was real. I was drawn into a throne room with three celestial beings. I could feel their power, Kal-kek was a flea to these beings. Each one looked at me and I could feel their gaze pass through me. i would not be able to hide anything from them and they knew it.

Then the three spoke with one voice, 'We have need of your services'.

A job offer? Definitely not what I was expecting. Ever the optimist I entered negotiations.

'Yeah and I need to disappear for a while. Know any good vacation spots?'

A rumble, maybe it was laughter, echoed through my minds as they flashed a deep jungle on a backwater world through my mind. It was decidedly short on swim up bars for my liking. Having gleaned the mission from their images I shurgged. It's not like I had much choice. If anyone could shield me from Kal-kek it was these three.

Of course, what's a job without a payoff.

'I'm in. My price is Kal-kek's head.'

'Let it be done,' the three said as one.

Next thing you know I am whisked off of center to the city of Dwemor ready for action."

Following the events of the Invisible Mountain That Nearly Crushed Dweomer (seriously, it was a whole thing), Crystal decided she wanted to settle there, rather than move back to Stormspire with her father, Diamond. She figured she could set up shop here, and maybe be a little less under Daddy's shadow. Her time with Libertas and the 13th had really made her want to stand on her own.

Thing is, setting up shop in high-magic town is a tricky proposition for a relatively untested Techno-wizard, even if she has a family name to fall back on. But she had another connection to trade on, as well--the aforementioned 13th SET, saviors of the day. Her being a permanent resident meant that, at the very least, Libertas would swing by as well from time to time, ensuring his continued desire to protect the city. The Three knew an easy win when they saw it, and so made arrangements for her to be able to open a shop in one of the tonier districts in town, and also gave her a few names in town she could approach for initial contracts, to set her reputation.

Of course, the contracts she had to sign to get all this done were... daunting, to say the least, and she had a hunch there were significant strings attached, but dammit, she wanted this. And so, she signed on the dotted line--lines, really, with all sorts of places to initial, as well. She'd deal with the catch, whatever it was, when the time came.

She'd almost stopped feeling like she was waiting for the catch to fall when it finally came.....

Earn a Second Benny: Write an interlude of the Magi reaching out to you. How did they communicate with you? Was it direct communications, visions in your mind, or an agent reaching out and explaining to you what is needed and the danger? Then tag both Technospawn and Ndreare in the post.
The bell rang at the front of the store as the door opened. Well, it didn't so much ring as it gave a low, almost foghorn-like hoot. She was proud of the bell; the doorframe scanned the aura of the guest, and the sound gave her a bit of forewarning of what she was dealing with--a light, friendly ringing meant someone had an intention to pay, an airy chime meant that they were there to pick up an order, a mechanical bee-boop meant they were just browsing, and so on. Silence meant a would-be shoplifter. The foghorn? Well, that meant a debt collector.

And sure enough, it was Salvatore Domicci, a D'norr with a penchant for sharply tailored suits. Sal was the lawyer who'd brought her the papers to sign when she'd reached out to the Three. One look at the contract suggested he wasn't just a lawyer, but a Shifter, and probably an Infernalist, as well; there's a certain... thoroughness in the contracts written by those used to dealing with the lower planes of existence.

Since it wasn't rent day, she had a hunch this was something else, and so she put on her most professional smile and nodded to him. "Hello, Sal, what brings you to the Crystal Palace today?"

He returned her smile with a gaze so cool it could speed up microchips. "Well, as a matter of fact, contractual obligations. Yours. Specifically, Clause 328, Section F--" he started, and she interceded immediately.

"--Subsection 2, Paragraph 3A, Critical Interests of the City." Her gorgeous mouth twitched into a smirk as he blinked in surprise. "Just because I was desperate enough to sign the contract without reading it all the way through doesn't mean I never bothered to, afterward. I'm pretty sure I know which clauses can be used to call upon me, and I've memorized them all."

With a suitably impressed expression, Sal nodded. "You'd be surprised how few people DO read the contract, even after the fact. Still, that makes this easier.. You are, indeed, being tapped to serve the Three in a matter of some import. We've sent a team south to recover an artifact. Sadly, we neglected to ensure they have a driver, and so they've already had to double-back once to retrieve the vehicle." He paused while Crystal laughed with glee at that, then continued.

"Yes, so anyway, we'll be sending you to their current campsite; you'll be joining the team there, as both vehicle operator and, of course, technician. Naturally, your very flexible talent pool should be brought to full bear in capturing the artifact for Dweomer. We have it on good authority there will be other teams seeking it out; it is important to the Three that we get it, first. The rest of the details are on this data-stone; we'll send you in about an hour, so please study it and prepare yourself."

She nodded. "Sure thing, soon as you tell me who the substitute is." When he shot her a confused look, she shook her head. "Per the same clause you're invoking, Section R, Subsection 1, Paragraph 1A--'During an absence from the city necessitated by invocation of the Vital Interests Clause, the city will provide a suitable staff member to the store to ensure the continuation of basic operations.' While I do a bit of commissioned customization, of course, the steady income is simple mercantile buying and selling. Here's the ledger, all sales should be noted, and whenever stock of a particular item dips below the number in red, additional should be ordered from the appropriate supplier, listed in the back."

Sal chuckled ruefully. "You really did read the contract thoroughly. Alright, alright. You get your stuff, and we'll have the shop manned by Scotto Freeman."

Crystal tilted her head. "Old Man Tooms' apprentice? Yeah, he's a sharp kid, got some integrity, he'll do. Okay, I'll go get my things, wash up and be ready in 45 minutes."

The deal sealed, she ushered Sal out, then put the "Closed" sign in the door to the shop, and went upstairs to get her things. Honestly, this is just fine by me. I'm not really learning much running a shop. Maybe I can develop some new techniques while I'm in the field. It worked for him pretty well.... Humming to herself, she grabbed some personal gizmos studded with crystals and the T-11 she'd converted recently, along with some additional odds-and-ends, before hauling herself and her toolkit down to the teleportation pads...
