1.0 Caught Out in the Open

Post by Technospawn »

Texas Wastelands
8th April 110 PA
Late night

The trek so far had not been easy. Everyone on the team was holding up good so far and they had overcome the few obstacles they had encountered. As the sun set there was a slight excitement in the team because tomorrow they would make New Del Rio. It was getting late and after a long days travel most of the team just wanted to set camp and get some grub. climbing over the rise the looked down into the valley and could see the massive ley line. Everyone knew this was not going to be a good place to camp. So the decision to move on into the night was made quickly. Going back and around would take days so the only way passed was through the valley. The team proceeds down the slope with everyone on edge. It is not a matter of if something will happen it is a matter of when.

Dangerous Quick Encounter
As you approach the rift a massive ley line storm spins up and several rifts begin to open. The things that you can se beginning to climb out of the rifts will leave you with nightmares.
Dog boys get a fatigue from the storm and will be at -1 from that fatigue.
The valley floor is difficult terrain. Anyone running, flying or driving will need to make a skill check. Failure will mean bumps and bruises.
Everyone describe how you fight your way clear of the storm and rifts.

To clarify, yes someone of you will be making 2 rolls. The movement roll and the DQE roll. Anyone just riding in the vehicle will not need a roll unless the driver fails, then you will roll athletics to survive the crash.

Zurathas shows no fear. With his brother @Set on his back, nothing he sees gives him pause. Even the terrible winds serve only to give him more lift. Born for flight, the dragon
Flight / Athletics: 1d8!!: [14!!] = 14
WD Athletics: 1d6!!: [4] = 4
like a master surfer rides a wave. He bellows with laughter, losing himself a little in the thrill of the moment.

Still, creatures from rifts can give even a dragon pause. A massive creature, a cross between a pterodactyl and a squid, launches itself into the air. Zurathas dive-bombs the squidactyl, claws and teeth flashing and slashing. The fight is quick and brutal. The squidactyl manages to latch a razor-lined tentacle around Zurathas' leg, cutting it open. The critter pays the price, though, as the dragon's claws

Fighting: 1d8!!: [4] = 4
WD Fighting: 1d6!!: [1] = 1
as if it were nothing but paper. The creature howls in pain and seeks to retreat. "We have it on the run! Take that, filthy maggot! Did you see what I did to it?!" He calls back to the juicer gripping tenaciously to the dragon's hide.

As @Zurathas dive-bombs the squidactyl, claws and teeth flashing and slashing, Setrakian grins, then howls with laughter raising a dagger and claws into the air holding onto the dragon with his legs.

Even wrapped up in the chaos that is the Ley line storm, pelting rain, hail, thunder, lightning, bursts of dimensional energy, the odd horde of frogs or insects, heat and cold tendrils, the Dragon Juicer knows he is fine, how could he not be? As long as Zurathas is with him all enemies would fall before them.

Holding tight to Zurathas as they dive-bomb downwards, Setrakian’s hair tingles at the base of his neck. Turning to look behind them he sees a second squidactyl baring down behind them. It’s hundred teeth beak wide open and ready to bite the dual dragons.

Setrakian jumps upwards. Off Zurathas. Into open air. Dagger of the Dark Dragon and Rezik’s Dragon Claws aimed at the beast. Eyes partially blinded by rain and wind the Juicer smashes into the squidactyl as his weapons tear flesh from bone.

Lightning fast flashes of blade and claw on beast rends the creature dead, decapitated with shattered wings.

As Zurathas banks back upwards Setrakian pushes off the dead monster, kicking off with inhuman strength, flying across the expanse and landing on the dragons back again.

Holding tight to his brother Set laughs aloud and cheers Zurathas on.

Cyrus had taken to riding alongside the groups transport as much as possible. While the dragons soared overhead, he took to keeping an eye on things close to ground level. The ley line was crackling with energy and seemed to be about ready to burst at the seams when they first spied it. It was obvious it would erupt into a storm any moment and although it was no surprise, luck was not on their side when it erupted while they were right on top of it.

When the rifts opened the creatures that came forth were alien and horrific. Cyrus had seen much worse during his time in Splynn, but the war horse he was riding had not. Although a manifestation of magical power, the beast still acted on instinct and bucked at the sight of the squidactyls . Instead of trying to control the mount, Cyrus dismissed it and
1d8!!: [7] = 7 1d6!!: [1] = 1
landed on his feet, nimbly dodging away from the grasping tentacles.

As the creatures closed in, Cyrus took a fighting stance and snarled. In one hand he wielded a vibro-tomahawk, chopping and slashing at the tentacles emerging from the rifts.
1d8!!: [5] = 5 1d6!!: [1] = 1
In the other, harpoons made of gleaming silver appeared that he plunged through the rifts and into the snapping beaks of the alien creatures. For a few moments, he was back in the fighiting pits, dealing swiftly and viciously with whatever got in his way. Finally hearing the whoop of Set, Cyrus took a moment to survey the scene. The battle was over with just a few still wiggling parts of the squidactyls scattered about. He was breathing heavy, covered in ichor and gore. Wincing, he pulled a piece of tentacle that had looped around his thigh and tossed it aside. The suckers on it were the size of an Eye of Eylor and left ugly red bruises.

The harpoons disappeared as if they were never there and Cyrus whipped the gore off the vibro-tomahawk. "Is anyone badly injured?"

Bosco was taking point. Despite his large size for a dog boy (5' 10") he was still graceful enough to be an excellent scout. His ability to be quiet along with his natural ability to detect arcane magics, the Federation sent him along to help seek out the artifact. He starts to get the scent of something when suddenly his stomach flips, as if he's about to vomit. Before he can shout warning, the ley line erupts causing eldritch energies to ripple through the air. Bosco's sword is in his hand before he even thinks about it, and he begins to cut and hack his way through the horrors that came through the other side. After wetting his blade with blood and gore, he pauses a moment, to catch his breath. His long pink tongue hangs out of his mouth as he pants, trying to cool himself down.

As the storm breaks out Vroches realizes he needs to land immediately, getting to ground he joins the team and begins moving. He was skilled in combat, but not delusional and a fight avoided was a fight won according to the doctrine from the Magus.

The others fighting the giant "squidactyl" left many of the small insect like swarm to run free. The silent lasers he used stylized to look like old school revolvers was ideal for the fast action shooting. The bugs so dense he often hit more than one with each pull of the trigger.

Sensing the ley line long before they reach even even Zeth is taken aback by the sudden surge and opening rifts. At first he fears Kal'kek has found him, then he looks at the creatures and realizes they are something else. Although in someways not much better!

Spoiling for a fight he winks out of the vehicle then gets a closer look at his adversaries, sometimes you had to know what you were fighting before you fought them. He starts chattering into the radio, "This reminds me of the time we went to Gemini II to recover something dropped there by a rift. Planet was a lot like this one, ley lines everywhere only the storms and random activity was even higher. we found the place where the item was dumped but there was this whole nest of monsters using it as a roost. They were immune to regular weapons, we had to beat them with makeshift sticks and spears that we powered up with magic."

Breaking off a stick just in case he gets ready to infuse it with mystic power to take out the beasts. He chuckles as he looks them over and realizes they have a vulnerability to wood. Looking down at the stick in his he prepares to teleport in close, oh man those guys came to the wrong place.

Zipping across the battle field he teleports on the back of one of the creatures stabbing it in the eye with a stick. It howls with rage as black ichor spouts from the wounded orifice and wood particle stream through its blood. Seeing the stuff spew out Zeth laughs.

Did I ever tell you guys ab out when...

Texas Wastelands
9th April 110 PA
0300 hrs

The storm continued to rage violently as the party all spilled out of the ATV and fought the nasty demons. It was not until they were on the other side of the ley line and almost out of the valley they realized everyone had left the atv. It was still on the other side of the storm several miles away.

Taking stock of themselves that could see that everyone except @Zeth Towani had been
bumps and bruises = 1 fatigue
. Worse was the dog boy was still very storm sick. They were standing there in the open in the middle of the night with no vehicle and not sure what to do. What do you do next?

It is roughly 0300 and the team has been up for over 28 hours. New Del Rio is days away on foot or 14 to 16 hours if they recover the ATV. There are the creatures spawned by the rifts, vampires, and other random stuff that could be hiding our here in the dark. So what do you?

Everyone needs to make a vigor roll -2 or take a fatigue.

Anyone or everyone can do this first set of actions.

Modified Quick Encounter
Recovering the ATV/b] - One person can roll this then everyone else can support them if they want to.
They know you are coming and have swarmed your ATV. All rolls are at -4 due to them having gang up bonuses.
* Crit Fail - You get swarmed and take 1d4 wounds before you retreat.
* Failure - There are too many and you take 1 wound and fall back.
* Success - you make it to ATV. There are still several of them so all driving is at -2
* Raise - You shine and your plan was awesome. You clear a path to the ATV, get in and ride out of the valley in style.

b]Supporting the above actions

You can support the above action. Support rolls are only -2.

Pick 1 of the following actions

Driving - Only one person can roll
Outside the valley it is dark out so all driving or flying will be done at -4 due to illumination. This can be offset with powers, sensor systems, or enhanced vision.
* Crit Fail - You drive in circles and end up back in the valley with the ley line storm still raging. The atv is damaged and you will a dramatic task to fix it while being attacked.
* Failure - you get lost and add several hours to your trip causing everyone to have to camp out again or make another fatigue roll.
* Success - you make it to the camp or New Del Rio with only minor problems. If you went to New Del Rio it takes you 15 hours.
* Raise - you are awesome. You navigated the terrain with ease and made camp or New Del Rio with no problem. If going to New Del Rio you make it 10 hours.

Finding a camp for the night - Only one person can roll this
Since it is dark and you are in unfamiliar territory to find a suitable camp is a survival roll at -4. This can be offset with any appropriate equipment or powers.
* Crit Fail - You stumble into a nest of vampires in a cave. You take 2 wounds as they attack you. You will have a running combat to fight you way through the nest until you can climb back out. You also burn through double ammo or PP getting out.
* Failure - you can not find a good camp and everyone is forced to sleep in the ATV. Since it is so cramped you do not get any sleep and take 1 fatigue.
* Success - you find an ok camp but no water. You get some sleep but must use your own supplies.
* Raise - you are awesome. You find an hidden oasis. It is safe and you get some good sleep. There is also clean water here. There are several fruit trees nearby. The oasis is very special and your PPE, ISP, and PP recover at double their normal rate.

Supporting the above actions
You can support one of the above actions. Support rolls are only -2.

Everyone needs to make a vigor roll -2 or take a fatigue.
Vigor d10
Roll: 1d10-2!!: [10]-2 = 8 <— aced 1d10!!: [6] = 6 =14 total
Wild : 1d6-2!!: [5]-2 = 3
Setrakian does not suffer fatigue. That’s for humans not powerful dragons!
Success and 3 Raises.

Support Zeth getting the APC back with Fighting Roll (Setrakian guards Zeth in the way to the ride fighting off baddies)
Fighting d12+4 (-2 scene modifiers)
Roll: 1d12+!!: [6] = 6 ?? +2 so = 8 total
Wild: 1d6-2!!: [2]-2 = 0
Success and Raise

Support Zeth Driving the APC with Notice Roll ( Setrakian will stand on the APC and call out any obstacles etc)
Notice d8 (-2 scene modifiers)
Roll: 1d8-2!!: [7]-2 = 5 <—
Wild: 1d6-2!!: [6]-2 = 4
Success

• Vigor (14, Success and 3 Raises):

Setrakian feels the surge of power that elder dragon blood gives one as it pumps through the body. Laughing loudly he feels great. Euphoric. Powerful. Roaring the dragon juicer grins at his brother Zurathas.

• Fight to the APC (8, Success and 1 Raise):

Seeing Zeth fighting back the way they had just come Set us momentarily confused then sees the distant APC swarmed by monsters. Shaking his head he laughs.

”Silly mortals.”

Bursting into action with claws and dagger Setrakian shadows the mage known as Zeth fighting along side him to get to the APC. Cutting and skashing beasts down and always right by Zeth’s side until they battle to the vehicle.

“You driving this thing? I typically fly. But I’ll stick with you young brother!”

• Standing on the APC as a observer (notice) (5, Success):

Jumping vertically Setrakian lands on the top of the APC and once it’s rolling he calls out any obstacles or issues the driver may need to know.

Waving towards the dragon Zurathas, Setrakian laughs: “Fear not brother I’m only temporarily riding this metal beast to help young brother out!”

Dawn wasn't coming anytime soon and the group needed to get to camp. They had pushed travel too long even for their supernatural and magically enhanced endurance. Luckily Zeth had managed to keep track of the ATV during the fight as the journey would have proved disastrous without it.

Cyrus shook his head to clear the cobwebs and stay
Vigor 1d8!!: [3] = 3 1d6!!: [3] = 3 -1
. It had taken a lot more out of him than he had thought. He concentrated a moment to draw energy from the ley line. The

faded and he felt somewhat better. A decent night's rest and everything would be fine...if they could find it.

He yawned and rubbed his jaw, simultaneously activating the tattoo that granted him supernatural senses. Instantly everything became clear and in focus. Scanning the area, he looked for somewhere the group could camp. The area was infested with vampires but Cyrus knew how to deal with them --and

"There. We can camp there for the night and should be ok."

Shortly after the camp has been settled in, but before everyone has bunked down for the night, a woman wearing a suit of customized Triax Mechanic Armor appears in a shimmering rainbow of light. She immediately puts up her hands halfway, showing they're empty. "Easy, folks! The Big Boys decided you all needed a bit more assistance. I'm Crystal Clad, your driver, mechanic, and all-around tech genius." She smiles, winningly, and spots Vroches. "Ah, right, the Bosses sent this." She tosses out a small crystal to him. The Datastone--really little more than the enchanted version of a high-tech pad, but with passwords only a City-trained Magi would know--quickly confirms her story and identity.

As he confirms her ID, she looks over at the poor, maltreated ATV. "Oh, I got here just in time. I'll have her purring like a kitten by morning, don't worry."

She smiles again. "So, if anyone wants to fill me in on anything I missed out on, please, feel free. I know the basics, but they figured you could handle my full briefing."

The dragon peers down at the newcomer. He braces to pounce...or to spew poison breath, whatever the situation might call for. Once her deference to his power is clear, and her identity verified by @Vroches, Zurathas relaxes a little. "So...you have talents for machines? I have no use for them. I could carry you all without that thing. No matter. I am Zurathas. This is my brother @Setrakian. What else can you do? And..." He points one of his frighteningly sharp claws at the various jewels and pipings laid into @Crystal Clad's customized armor. "...what have you done to this shell? Does it do anything but make it more enticing to thieves...or dragons?" He grins at the last part. It's hard to tell if he's being jovial.

Setrakian quietly eyes Crystal through half closed eyes. Sitting next to the dragon, Zurathas, the man is obviously a Juicer. A moments look shows Setrakian is in fact a dragon juicer. Resting, the large powerfully build man looks drugged out and unaware.

When the dragon address Crystal the juicer stands up with a jolts and opens his eyes wider. Rolling his shoulders he grins and is wide awake, lightly shaking with energy as he drums his fingers on his hips, he moves to stand before the newcomer. The look on his face is a hungry one.

”Aye brother she is a shinny one… ugh, The Crystal Palace. Off limits per the Three.”

Turning away from Crystal, Setrakian gives no further explanation and wanders to the far side of the camp showing zero interest in the newcomer.

The dragon juicer absently plays with a small necklace and talks to himself quietly.

Catching the crystal mid and reading it quickly the warrior nods. "Well that helps. We left before everyone showed up at the bar, I should not have doubted their preparations." As the human comes in he points out the current predicament and says. "Obviously you can see why we need your help."
She nods to the Lyn-Srial. "Don't worry, I can get her up and rolling fast enough."

Once her deference to his power is clear, and her identity verified by Vroches, @Zurathas relaxes a little.
@Vroches

She blinks at @Zurathas. "I... see. Well, then, I shan't bother you with too many details of what my machines can do. But trust me--with a few moments I can whip up wonders. As for the armor, at the moment, it doesn't have much additional function--but in the future, these modifications will make add-ons easier to install."

Then she tilts her head as she is introduced to @Set. Noting the comraderie between Dragon Juicer and Dragon, she nods. "Blood brothers, as it were? Well, I understand the basic principles of that harness of yours, Setrakis; while I doubt I could build a completely new one, I think I can fix yours if someone damages it."
