Background: Sgt. Harlan Puck was recruited into one of the first Full Conversion programs following the establishment of the nascent Chi-Town government. His skills as a martial arts instructor were considered ideal for the program; the notion of a living weapon was enticing to the military.

He spent decades in the service of the CS military. He believed in the mission, and was loyal to his superiors, and even more to those under his command. First he led Cyborgs; then, over time, other 'enhanced' humans--Crazies and Juicers. He had some of the highest morale troops in the service.

And when some of his men joined the Revolt, he was torn. He advocated bringing them in with non-lethal methods; when his superiors overrode that and sent in heavy troops to put down the revolt, his loyalty to his commanders finally snapped, in favor of his loyalty to the men and women who'd literally burned years of their lives for the CS, only to be betrayed.

He spent several years after that drifting, at loose ends. His system resisted alcohol, or the old soldier might have crawled into a bottle; as it was, he simply succumbed to a deep depression. Then he ran across one of the streams of refugees looking for safety after the fall of Tolkeen. He had allowed his systems to begin to fail; one of the refugees was a mechanic, who offered to restore him, if he would accompany them to their destination; they'd heard of a safe haven, called Castle Refuge. He agreed, though there were limits to the repairs that could be made--his systems have suffered some permanent damage that would probably kill him to try and fix.

The ancient warrior didn't care. Too many disappointments, too many betrayals. He figured he would finish this job, then find some lake to jump in, sink to the bottom, and unseal his breathing apparatus.

Then he got to Castle Refuge, and saw something he hadn't seen since the heady early days of the Coalition: hope. He's now waging a constant fight between his innate idealism and his hard-learned cynicism. In the meantime, he's sticking around and seeing how things shake out. That lake is still out there, waiting, but he's in less of a rush to get there.
