Rad the Immortal

Seasoned Human, Glitter Boy Pilot

Kate Pittman was best described as a good for nothing when it came to the sort of person she was and how she went about her life. Seeming to have no skills of any measurable worth, she liked to talk a big game that far exceeded her actual ability to get things done. As such, the young woman who lived in one of the satellite towns of the Golden Age Weaponsmiths made her way in the world by living like the vulture that she was.

She was what the locals of Guntersville often called “a corpse picker”. That is to say, someone who leeched off of the salvage economy that seemed to fuel the region, by following several hours behind adventuring crews that sought to make their fortune in the nearby wilderness by finding valuable salvage and bringing it back to the engineers and machinists who would gladly accept it in exchange for large piles of credits, to then be refurbished and sold off to neighbouring nations.

Not all such expeditions would be successful however, and it was people like Kate who would be there shortly after such gruesome failures where an adventuring party had met some horrible end, to retrieve their bodies of their personal possessions and the salvage they had been attempting to bring back. In most cases, the alien wild creatures they had fallen to had no interest or understanding of the valuables said bodies had left behind in their efforts to consume a fleshy meal, or to guard their territory.

It wasn’t exactly an honourable profession, but it never bothered someone like Kate. People died every day, and it was really the only way for someone like her to make a living outside of stealing from the living. A fine line perhaps, but also one she didn’t really think about all that often in the cruel world that was Rifts Earth.

As luck would have it however, it seemed she had arrived too early upon the scene of a particular wreckage to the east upon the border of Dinosaur Swamp. Among the bodies of an entire pack of giant destroyed lizards lay a single partially upright USA-G10 Glitterboy suit, one that had been heavily damaged, but had somehow remained piled in after it had been destroyed. With a gleeful expression, she made her way to the prize, imagining the mountain of credits she would get from any still working parts that she could pry off of it. Yet it seemed fate had other plans, as it became evident on closer inspection that the pilot within was still alive, yet heavily injured and clearly but a step away from deaths door.

To her shock, she realized that this wasn’t just any Glitterboy, but the famous “Rad the Immortal”. A heroic figure that had been wandering the land for centuries, performing untold numbers of mighty deeds for those who needed his help the most. To see that he had been unlucky enough to meet his end to a large pack of dinosaurs through a random bit of bad luck was probably the least fitting way to go for someone of such legendary status.

After pulling him free from the power armor, he explained to Kate with his dying words, that he had only been “Rad” for a few years, after inheriting the suit from his predecessor under similar circumstances. What followed was a quickly told list of several men who had taken the title of Rad the Immortal since the original had retired and died of old age a long time ago. Finally he said that it was Kates turn to take up the mantle, to don the suit and become the next Rad so as to keep the legend alive.

Spluttering out an outright refusal at this, Kate told him that she had no ability to fight much less pilot a power armor, nor was she exactly a good enough person to uphold a legendary Glitterboy legacy! With a shake of his head, the man told her that the armor would run her through some basic piloting and combat simulations from its internal software, but that in the end it wasn’t her skill, heroics or even the mighty boom gun itself that was the true power of the suit.
It was the name. Simply by existing as an unbroken chain, Rad the Immortal would continue to inspire hope, even when piloted by what would arguably be the absolute worst person to do so. The entire situation seemed absurd, yet held a sort of “just crazy enough to work” feel to it. Even as she laid the former pilot to rest in a quickly constructed makeshift grave and found herself climbing into the barely working device, she found herself dizzy with anticipation and disbelief... Was she really going to do this?

What else was there to do? Continue being a vulture until she too got killed by some random pack of monsters? There was a guy back in town who owed her enough of a favour to get the suit repaired, but after that she would be on her own. Kate knew enough that something like this had a way of eating your credits, of which she was sorely lacking. Perhaps she would put the former pilots words to the test and see if she could make some money fighting for hire and see if the legend played out on its own like he said.

Now all she had to do was not get herself killed like the other Rads had done. Easy, right?

On a failure, the victim is Shaken and Hard of Hearing (Major) for 3d6 minutes (this may not cause a Wound). On a Critical Failure the victim is Stunned. Those with Hard of Hearing (Minor) or hearing protection ignore the penalty; Hard of Hearing (Major) are immune.
  • Stand By to Fire: USA G-10s can’t move and fire the Boom Gun in the same round. Many carry alternative weapons for when they need to move and fight.
