Second Quarter

As Gargamel lay in the medical bay resting, his mind drifted back to his youth, when he first began his lessons in the magical arts. He’d failed his squad today when they needed him.

“No you lunkhead!” a squeaky voice cried out in exasperation as a hard bit of fruit banged against Gargamel’s head, leaving a smear of fruit juice on his forehead “if you cast like that, you will center it on your internal organs and your heart will escape out of your chest. It is very messy, seen it before. No wish to clean that up again! So DON’T do it!” This was punctuated by another piece of fruit being thrown against Gargamel’s head.

Gargamel rubbed his forehead where the fruit hit as he was chastised by his pint sized teacher Shereki, whose tiny wings were all aflutter as he attempted to drum his message through. Although Faerie magic was very different due to it being intrinsic to their nature, Shereki also knew the fundamentals of magic that Gargamel could learn; a fact that Shereki had thus far declined to explain why.

Before Gargamel could respond, there was a scream from nearby in the woods. Shereki and Gargamel took one look at each other and then immediately rushed through the woods towards the scream.
In a clearing only a few hundred metres away, they found one of Shereki’s people being held in the hand of a much larger blue faerie with a whitish stump protruding from the top of its head. It snarled as they approached, looking ready to either pounce on them or run. Gargamel had dealt with these interlopers before, but it seemed he had missed one and it had cost a faerie her life.

“Do your sworn duty!” Shereki screamed as Gargamel drew his pistols and the creature began to flee for the undergrowth. Instinctively, the spell he had been practicing sprang into his mind and it only took a second for him to cast it. Suddenly, everything slowed to a crawl as his perception of the minutiae of time expanded. He rained laser bolts down on the creature leaving it a smouldering set of remains by the time it had taken five more steps.

He took no satisfaction that he had successfully cast a spell as his oath to protect the faerie outweighed that and here he felt he had failed them.

Cool!

The CARD -

PEACE: Your hero is able to improve the attitude of a group in an encounter, perhaps by recognizing someone in the crowd, showing respect, or offering a bribe. It doesn’t work on true enemies—only “neutrals” who happen to cross paths with your party.

Now

With a little bit of help, Gargamel found the tattooed children in the woods. Having cleared out the lizardmen and burned their bodies, they were safe for now, but Gargamel knew such peace was fleeting.

Arriving out of the woods, having made no effort to hide, they looked at him as he arrived as if to say ‘why are you here?’ Looking for the oldest child who spoke for them, who struck him as only being around 12, he petitioned him as their leader, being as blunt as possible.

“You can’t stay here! It is too dangerous.” In retrospect, attempting logic with a teenager is like trying to lasso a whirlwind with a nappy; don’t bother. He had to put it in context of how they get something out of it.

“This is our home!” he gave Gargamel a look that only a 12 year old kid could which said ‘why are you so stupid?’ “The lizardmen are dead, we are safe. Anybody else turns up, we’re going to cut them and shoot them.” He made a slicing motion and gestured to their new laser rifles procured from the corpses of the Lizardmen, a large number of whom Gargamel had left in pieces on the floor.

“For now, and what happens when somebody else moves in? Your parents are dead, all your adults gone and there is a lunatic with metal orbs who likes blowing people up. We can drop you off somewhere safe where you can make your way in the world with the help of an organization that will protect you and maybe train you.”

“You mean the Tomorrow Legion who want you dead.” he snorted, “yeah, we were listening."

“That’s a misunderstanding. They, believe it or not, try to do the right thing. As much as they hate us right now, it is because they believe we did something horrible."

Trying to convince them, he looked around at their faces; a couple he recognized the look forming on their faces. They were starting to enjoy the violence, love the carnage, a feeling he knew all too well, especially when he used … his hand hovered over the pommel of his Battle Fury Blade. It made him a better killer, but when he used it, it … he could feel all restraint want to fall away. At heart, Gargamel knew he was a killer; he loved fighting and it had been made clear to him in the past that he was a weapon to be used. Now though, he did not know whom was wielding him and whether he was changing into something else.

Twelve years ago

“So you are our new batch of recruits who passed the assessment stage.”
A large man in insectoid armour addressed a batch of twenty young men and women of a variety of species, “You have been allocated to your training sections have you not?"

“Excuse me Sir, but I petitioned to become a Lord Magus, but you have assigned me to the Battle Magus corps. I wish to request reassignment. My abilities will be wasted there.”

“You have a very high opinion of yourself don’t you apprentice … Gargamel isn’t it?”

“Yes Lord Magus Durani.”

"Yes, I remember evaluating you. There is certainly the skill here,” he tapped Gargamel on the forehead with a clawed hand, leaving a slight indentation, “you could certainly learn to become a Lord Magus, but..” he tapped Gargamel a lot harder in the chest, to which his initial response was to go on guard to protect himself and eliminate the threat. He fought down the urge, but Lord Magus Durani saw it just the same as if he was peering into Gargamel’s soul.

“You have the heart of a warrior, a killer. You have a temperament for action that does not resonate with the role of a Lord Magus. You will fight to protect us, but a scholar you are not. You are a survivor; one which I foresee will go far. Anybody who stands alongside you will be glad of your abilities and I sense ..” Duranti looked quizzically at Gargamel as he appraised him, “interesting, very interesting. A warrior you will become,” he overrode Gargamel’s objections, “learn to fight alongside your companions and accept what you have already become!”

Now

“They will fight for you and never underestimate somebody having your back,” Gargamel continued speaking, realizing that the children had become survivors. They had each other and didn’t need so much a family for they already were one, may-hap the Black Company would become one for him, but they needed a purpose, otherwise they would become a danger. So he decided to give them one; one that hopefully would lead to a better one for them without them realizing.

“We helped each other back at the bridge, so don’t let Iron Tic’s sacrifice be in vain. We help you get somewhere safer where there is food and shelter and you help us.”

At the mention of the man who saved his life, he stopped and thought for a second.

“What do you want us to do?”
