Background
Shaintar
Born in the kingdom of Galea, in a small village of Alakar just inside the Fae Forest.
Taunted by other kids for being more human like. All Alakar are of mixed heritage, but typically appear more elven.
Embralai was much more human-like, her ears hardly pointed at all and her face much rounder.
She would often play by herself in the deep forest. She sometimes spoke to and played with faeries who lived there.
After an incident of particularly fierce taunting, she fled deeper into the woods than she had before, wishing she could just disappear.
She hears a voice - "I can help you with that. Come with me and discover a whole new world, a new, better life."
Following the voice, she comes upon a strange distortion in space, hanging in the air before her.
She hears her brother call out to her, and turns to him.
Suddenly, an invisible something grabs her leg. She falls, and is pulled backward towards the rift as she scrambles to grab hold of something.
Her brother grabs her hand, but they are both pulled through.
She was nine years old.

The Federation of Magic
For the next five years, she and her brother lived in a... commune? Work camp? Something like that.
people were drawn through rifts from worlds of powerful magic, then sifted, sorted, and separated.
Those of the greatest magic were taken away, never seen again.
Those that fought were killed.
The rest... did their best to survive, one day to the next.
Embralei had never shown any aptitude for magic, and was smart enough not to cause too much trouble, so she was mostly left alone.
She did sneak out of the camp on occasion to go into the woods to play with the fairies or gather additional food.
This new world's forest was strange to her, filled with alien plants and creatures in addition to the ones she was used to.
The fairies were meaner, too, and liked to play tricks on her, so she stopped talking to them.

The Escape
Five years later, and Ember was starting to attract attention, and not the good sort.
Compared to elves, even Alakar, she looked human, especially when her hair covered her (barely) pointed ears.
Among humans her elfin features added just a hint of the exotic, which enhanced her natural beauty.
One of the guards got a bit handsy, so she got a bit handsy in return - and footsy, with a swift kick to the family jewels and a shove that sent the man tumbling down.
The shove proved to be a costly mistake - the guard's head struck a rock as he fell, which cracked his skull and killed him instantly.
She knew what would happen when it was discovered. It wasn't the first time a guard had died. Even when it was clearly an accident some poor sod was executed.
Ember had no intention of being such a sod. She went home, told her brother they were leaving, packed up their meager few belongings, and sneaked out for one last time.

...more to come: the separation of the siblings, her criminal career, the siblings finding each other, and of course, joining the Black Company.

Fast Learner is a Shaintar human racial edge (p47 of Shaintar: Legends Arise), taken via the Manifest Bloodline Alakar racial edge (p34 of Shaintar: Legends Arise) which lets an Alakar declare if they are more Human-like or Eldakar-like, and then take a racial edge of that race. It gives three options when using an advance to gain/improve skills, which basically boil down to "do one of the three skill advances that anyone can do, and also increase a skill that is below it's linked attribute by one die type".

Up to Speed is one of those three options: "increase three skills that are lower than their linked attributes by one die type each"

The other two are Intense Focus ("learn a new skill at d4 and also increase a skill that is below it's linked attribute by one die type") and Balancing Act ("increase a skill that is equal to or greater than its linked attribute by one die type and also increase a skill that is below it's linked attribute by one die type")

It hasn't really had much of an impact on the character (2 advances improving 3 skills each or 3 advances improving 2 skills each, either way it's 6 skill increases), but it seemed rather appropriate for her and will be beneficial as she continues to improve skills.
