Character Creation

Post by Venatus Vinco »

Character Creation
Creating a character for Savage Rifts requires the Deluxe Edition of Savage Worlds as well as the Tomorrow Legion Player’s Guide. Both products are available in physical copy and as digital downloads through Pinnacle Entertainment Group’s website.

Step One: Concept
Once you have an idea, create an account and reach out to our admin via IM to discuss. All accounts must be registered with your character's name. Please no "l33t-speak" or other nonsensical account names, they will not be kept. Your account name should be the same as that which your character will use in conversation with the other players on-site. After you register your account, you should receive an e-mail by which you will activate the account.

Conversions. It is possible to create characters from your favourite Savage settings or other Rifts material not covered in the core books. However, these will be considered on a case by case basis.

Archetypes. If you’re new to the system or in a hurry to jump in an Archetype might be a good choice. Add a name, Hindrances, and gear, spend any remaining skill points, and you’re ready to play! Check out our list of available Archetypes.

Step Two: Creation
Creation follows the standard rules found in the Tomorrow Legion Player’s guide. Copy and paste the “Character Sheet Template” into a new post in the “Recruitment” forum. Build your character, choose an iconic framework, and have fun. All dice rolls for background tables and other creation events should be done with the onsite dice roller and recorded on your Advancement Tracker. Hold on to this checklist to track your advances as your character gains experience points. Background and equipment templates should be done as a reply to your original post. Thus a finished character has five parts: Your dice rolls, Character Sheet, Background, Gear, and Advancements. Here's a sample sheet for Nathan Foxwood.

To help keep track of everything during creation, we've put the Character Sheet, Background sheet, Gear sheet, and Advancement Tracker in a single Google doc here: Blank Savage Rifts Character Sheet (Google Doc)

If you prefer working in BB code directly:
Here is a text file with the code tags.

We recommend the Add-On for Google Docs to convert the final product to BB Code. It's pretty nifty.

Note, you can also take advantage of the Armory, including fully stated examples of starting gear by Iconic Framework.

Bonus! Because advancement is slower in PBP all initial characters start with an extra 5 experience points that can be used to purchase an additional starting advance.

Step Three: Group
Our first group will focus on the main Tomorrow Legion concept as presented in the Savage Rifts core material. However, as we grow in players and Game Masters we may expand to additional group concepts such as mercenaries, adventurers, Coalition soldiers, and more. Once you have your character approved, find a group that’s right for you and request to join.

Character Creation Notes & Questions

Below are some items that have come up as we put character creation through its paces.

1. Does the "Born a Hero" setting rule (i.e. ignore rank requirements for Edges) apply to MARS characters when spending their additional 20 xp at creation?
No. Per Sean Patrick Fannon, author of Savage Rifts:
Sean Patrick Fannon wrote:The 20xp that M.A.R.S. characters receive represents post-character creation experience. Ergo, officially, Born a Hero would not apply to any Edges taken with the four advances you get for those 20xp. You would be limited to Novice for three of those advances, and Seasoned for that last advance.

GMs may wish to allow players to ignore that restriction, but it could actually imbalance things too far in the M.A.R.S.' characters' favor doing that.
2. Does the "Born a Hero" setting rule apply to powers (i.e. Magic and Psionics) selected at creation?
Yes. Powers taken at creation ignore rank requirements (but not other prerequisites). Any advances after creation observe normal rank restrictions.

3. Where do I list the racial benefits/Hindrances in the Character Sheet Template?
Venatus Vinco wrote:Make a new heading called "Racial Info"
4. What are the rules for creating a superhero using the Super Power Companion 2nd Edition (SPC2)?
Venatus Vinco wrote:Answer in development.
5. The player's handbook notes all Arcane Backgrounds from Savage Worlds are available. If a MARS framework character selected Arcane Background Super Powers would this be allowed and could they use those power points to purchase powers from the SPC2?
Clint Black wrote:Yep. A character could take Arcane Background (Super Powers) from Savage Worlds, the core rulebook. AB (Super Powers) from the SPC2 is not the same AB (Super Powers) from Savage Worlds, which is the one specifically allowed. The character would get one power with 20 PPs (PPE) to activate it.

The following documents allow you the player to quickly add IF abilities to your character build sheet on google (or directly to the board via the BBCode Export add on).

Lords of War MARS: Mercenaries, Adventurers, Rogues, Scholars Psychic Powerhouses Masters of Magic Dragon Hatchlings
Tales of the 17th SOG
"In so far as you are concerned, I am the right arm of High Command itself. You are my Fist, be ready to strike at any moment." Major Killian Gregor, 3rd SOG Battalion, CSSD, Chi-Town.
