Altess race write up for review

Post by Seswarick »

To make the Altess we (Jon mostly) decided to go with a retooling of the Altara as they are both products of genetic engineering. This is what I have so far. not sure what to replace storm fouled senses with and how to offset Wealthy Beyond Imagining.

What I have so far...
Bonus'
total value 12
  • Wealthy Beyond Imagining: The Altess are the creators of much of the technology the makes the Three Galaxies tick and they still hold the patents. At home in the Dynasty their wealth is near limitless but while out adventuring their access is much more limited. They begin with the rich and very rich edges.
  • Extended life span: The Altess live far longer than normal humans. With access to the medical facilities on their homeworlds they are virtually immortal. Without them they still live to be around 250 years old. „„(Note this provides no game effect, it's just flair)
  • Attractive: The forced evolution process administered to the Warrior Women includes genetically engineering them for beauty. Altara have the Attractive Edge.
    „„„„
  • Genetic Engineering: Millenia of genetic engineering had made the Altess more than human, they begin with a starting Agility, Strength, and Vigor of d6. This increases their natural maximums in these attributes to d12+1.
„„
Complications total value 10
  • Ignorance from Arrogance: Most Altess spend their lives perusing recreation and their various hobbies, leaving much of lifes daily maintinence to servants and slaves. This leaves them woefully under-educated and naive about the world at large. They suffer a −2 to all Smarts rolls.
    „„„„
  • Wanted (Minor): Any Altess adventurers are considered to be AWOL from the empire and are hunted with the intent of bringing them back home.
  • Bad Reputation: The Altess are infamous having built their empire on slavery and the concept of racial superiority. Most other „„species find them intolerably arrogant and condescending. They suffer a -4 charisma penalty with nonhumans and those opposed to slavery.
  • You Do It For Me: on a club on the initaitive make a spirit roll at -2 to summon the motivation to care about what is going on.
  • Wanted Major: Every Altess is born with a fragment of the location of the cosmic forge imbedded in their minds. While too proud and disinterested in the Forge to work together and find it,sSeekers of the cosmic forge covet the knowledge and will often harass individuals and worse to gain it from them.

Original Altara…
„Bonus'
  • Attractive: The forcedevolution process administered to the Warrior Women includes genetically engineering them for beauty. Altara have the Attractive Edge.
    „„
  • Genetic Engineering: Crafted through bio-wizardry to be perfect warriors, Altara begin with a starting Agility, Strength, and Vigor of d6. This increases their natural maximums in these attributes to d12+1.
    „„
  • Superior Senses: Altara Warrior Women begin with the Alertness Edge, as all of their other senses are exceptional. „„ Wanted (Minor): Any Minion of Splugorth, including most other Altara Warrior Women, attack to capture or kill a rogue Altara in an instant.
Complications
  • Bad Reputation: The Altara Warrior Women are infamous as servants of Splugorth Slavers worldwide. The average person hates and fears Altara; they suffer a −4 Charisma penalty with most folks who discover who and what they are.
    „„
  • Blind: Although created blind, this is only a minor drawback for the Altara, as they have a natural radar ability extending 1,200 feet (200") which compensates for the penalties. They cannot read, see colors, or otherwise detect purely visual information. „„
  • Instilled Ignorance: Altara are taught only what they need to serve their masters, and extreme brainwashing is used to dampen their intellectual acumen. This leaves them woefully under-educated and naive about the world at large. They suffer a −2 to all Smarts rolls.
  • Storm-Fouled Senses: In strong inclement weather, or conditions where the environment is greatly disturbed (sand storms, fires with lots of smoke), the Altara suffer a −2 penalty to Notice, Fighting, Shooting, and Throwing.

Allegedly they have this, but considering their inherent superiority complex, this could easily be a lie to justify their behaviour.

DB 5 P110 states they claim to be directly descended from the First and they certainly believe it. Like all the heresies listed and the other theories, no definite answer is given.

Since I gave them no benefit to finding the forge I'm neither confirming or denying the legends. Just saying enough powerful people believe it to be a problem for roaming Altess.

Here was what @Venatus Vinco came up with for @Tiree back when we started the site. It was literally one of the first posts. Note, it is also pre-VV's and my own development in terms of understanding SW in general and SR in particular (with its curious balance)
Okay,

It's really just a question of layout so we can wait and see how races are presented in the books.

My argument for separating the entries is because they are two mechanically distinct hindrances (Arrogance and Overconfidence) and showing them that way helps list show the racial edges and hindrances clearly. Keeping them together requires reading a larger text block and being aware of two different mechanical elements buried in that text. The whole "Altess Arrogance" narrative could be part of the racial flavour text as opposed to the hindrance description/mechanical usage.

Also, showing two major hindrances helps show the true cost of the "+2 to everything edge".

Generally speaking the descriptions of the racial edges/hindrances are too long relative to those in the core book.

Using the template from the core book:
Altess
Using genetic engineering the Altess Dynasty has refined its people into a slightly more "evolved" version of the human race. According to the dynasty the Altess are the new face of humanity itself. On the surface there is nothing unusual about them, except they are especially good looking and physically fit. However, they possess attributes and abilities beyond the range of ordinary humans.
Physical Perfection: Due to genetic tinkering the character moves with uncanny grace and coordination. The character gets one extra non-movement action and incurs no multi-action penalty for it. (Additional Action, +3 points)
Gifted: Unskilled Trait tests are done at d4 instead of d4-2. (Edge, +2 points)
Durability: Dense muscular and skeletal systems make the character tougher. Add +1 toughness. (Racial Trait, +1 points)
Arrogant: All Altess have unbridled arrogance and belief in themselves as ultimately flawless creatures. As a result Altess suffer -2 Charisma. (Bad Reputation, -1 point)
Over Confident: Due to their superior genetics Altess don't need the crutches of the others, and as such will never use juicer or M.O.M. conversion, bionic enhancement, and rarely use power armor. Characters that rely on heavy armor or tech will face derisive comments from NPCs about the cowardly Altess. The assault on their ego is so great they suffer -1 on all checks when facing such ridicule. (Major Hindrance, -2 points)
Rich: Due to noble upbringing and a life of privilege all Altess are rich. Starts with 5,000 credits. Make two rolls on Body Armor, Close, Combat Weapons, Cybernetics, or Ranged Combat Weapons Tables. The hero may give up the two rolls to instead own one vehicle of his choice. (Edge, 2 points)
Lazy: Despite having perfect bodies and limitless wealth, the Altess are ultimately bored. Because of this they can barely be counted on when perseverance is called for. They receive -1 to all extended tests (Minor Hindrance, -1 point).
Hunted: The Splugorth hunt Altess for their knowledge of the Cosmic Forge and as prized slave stock.(Minor Hindrance, -1 point)
That fits pretty neatly on a character sheet.

EDIT:
All races start with 2 "free points" (like the humans Adaptability that provides a free edge)

Physical Perfection 3 points
Gifted 2 points
Rich, 2 points
Total: 7

Arrogant, - 2points
Overconfident, - 2points
Lazy, -1 point
Free, -2 points
Total:7

Gifted seems to be a more powerful version of the Jack of All Trades Edge, which just affects Smarts Skills. If from the SPC, it would take the 2 point SPC access cost for AB: Superpowers

Nice. We hit a lot of the same points just in different ways. My original post is what we settled on. Since the immortality gives no game bonus I probably shouldn't have even listed it and it incurs no cost. Thought about a cyber restriction but didn't want to keep someone from playing an ex-Armoria character. Same with magic, they can but just don't mostly.
