Robot Brawling League

Post by High Command »

Robot Brawling is an age old sport taken to new extremes in Rifts Earth.

The most large scale version of this is the competitions held in Northern Gun where pilots pit Robot Vehicles against each other, but there are smaller scale fights too - common in places like Kingsdale, the 'Burbs, and even Merctown. Smaller robots are upgraded with control interfaces that allow users to use Remote Control Boards to allow pilots to take action as the robots themselves. The action in these fights is much smaller and can include everything from small bots with basic dog brain capabilities to full on skelebot and labor bot frames. In this way the users skirt laws on including combat programming, since the bots natively do not know any combat skills - it relies on the pilot's skills.
The average control board costs 500 credits, and the interface costs 1000 credits.

Robot Brawler League Controller
Requirements: Novice, Smarts d8+, Pilot d6+, Repair d6+
The use of robots and drones for brawling and combat is quite common in the back alleys of the 'Burbs. Anyone with enough cash can buy or build one. To represent that, this edge allows a character to have a basic robot brawler (with the stats of a dog, plus the construct ability, but no sense of smell) with a basic AI that responds to the commands of the controller. It remains loyal to the character, unless acted on by some outside force. The bot is an Extra and doesn’t Advance in Rank or abilities. If a bot is dismissed or killed, the hero gains a replacement in 1d4 days.
The robot is controlled by voice commands, or direct control can be taken by use of a Remote control board that costs 500 credits.
More Powerful Companions: This edge may be taken more than once. Choose one of the effects below each time it’s chosen:
• Gain an additional bot.
• Increase one of the bot’s Traits one die type (only one Trait per pet).
• Increase the maximum Size bot you may have by +1, to a maximum of 3.
• Make one bot a Wild Card. (The hero must be of Heroic Rank)

Innate Robot Control
REQUIREMENTS: Novice
Some individuals have an extra connection and understanding of their artificially intelligent robot companions. These characters may spend their own Bennies for any robots under their control, including mounts, accompanying bots, and so on. This is common among Skelebot Contollers in the CS Army.

Building Robots for the Brawling League will use the Robot Construction rules in SFC

The basic robot is sentient and interprets orders based on its Smarts, costs 100,000 UC (5,000,000 UC if a Wild Card), and can hold up to 5 points of Robotic Modifications (SFC p. 38, multiply costs by 10). It has 5 attribute points and 15 skill points (used just like building characters). Each attribute point and every two skill points can be dropped for a 10,000 UC discount (minimum of 10,000 UC) and one additional Mod slot.

Basic Robot
Attributes: Agility d4, Smarts d4, Spirit d4, Strength d4, Vigor d4
Skills: —
Pace: 4; Parry: 2; Toughness: 4
Special Abilities
• Construct: +2 to recover from being Shaken; does not breathe; immune to poison and disease; ignores one level of wound penalties.
• Environmental Weakness (Electricity): Robots suffer +4 damage from electrical attacks.

Building your own is completely possible, but it is a multi-stage project that is basically a multi-month long single person dramatic task. It requires eight Task Tokens in five checks (each check is a month). Failing means losing the invested money, time, and having to scrap the entire project. Each additional person working on the project adds an additional two required Task Tokens. It still must be completed in the same time and costs just as much (additionally they will also probably want to be paid, 1000-2000 a month is reasonable). You will pay at minimum 50,000 UC in parts, and every failed roll costs you another 10,000 UC

Adding a Mod requires the cost of the mod (in full) and the engineer/technician must accumulate four Task Tokens in three checks (each check is a week). Each additional person working on the project adds an additional two required Task Tokens. It still must be completed in the same time and costs just as much (additionally they will also probably want to be paid, 1000-2000 a month is reasonable). Failing means losing the invested money, time, and having to scrap the entire project.
