Gloom Part 1: Tonight you rock

Post by Pender Lumkiss »

Chaos in Gloom
The city itself is a bit depressed, several buildings have burn marks and throngs of folks gather at various sections of the city with anti OTO signs. Displaced children and families wander the streets looking for a handout while their homes are being rebuilt after being burned to the ground You pass by the Helpful House, one of the largest orphanages in gloom, it is in shambles and only the most cold hearted adventurer would not have their heart strings pulled by all the dirty faces of poor homeless children looking up at you as you pass by.
Pinnacle Hotel
It is some kind of crashed vehicle. The lobby looks well kept, but a map of gloom hangs near the entrance a bit off kilter as if a recent patron had damaged how it was fastened to the wall. The proprietor is named
Ben he is an octo-man. Friendly as can be and loves watching an old pre-rift show called voltron. For 100 creds he hooks you up with a room that is immaculate compared to the hotel hallways.

The Radio Station: A concert for the children of Gloom
Word on the street is that Vector Inlay and the mayor of the city, Giest are putting on a benefit concert at the radio station this very night! Apparently Vector is also heading to Whykin after the concert to help set up a radio tower and station in that city. The street also confirms that Vector is one of Giest's ( Mayor of Gloom) closest friend and he knows everything about anything that happens in the city.
The radio station is a huge converted warehouse, that houses an impressive attanae array at the top of it. About a third of the inside has been converted into a state of the art radio station, and the other 2/3 is a premier concert venue. The station is a tough place to get into with heightened security ( a radical group called the OTO seems to be firebombing homes, and they just recently hit a children's orphanage) and the masses of people waiting for the show to start do not make it any easier. But as night falls and folks are able to get into the venue, the stage is lit and a various microphones and musical instruments adorn it. Rumors abound umonsgst the crowd as to where the band is. Many folks whom work for the Radio station man kiosks that allow for a small donation of creds to help fund a new orphanage. However, without the band present and playing it would be reasonable to assume they will fall far short of their goal.
The band is supposed to be the Drei Marbles Left a world renown band from the NGR! Their lead singer Vick Shultz always wears a set of NGR armor, and is supposed to be a real lady killer. Scuttle but in the crowd seems to be that a rouge group of murder wraiths outside of Kingsdale killed all the members. Other folks think that the band is just waiting to make one of their signature entrances. A worried Vector Inlay approaches the players clearly frantic with worry, but spotting Markus he calls them over, a clear case of mistaken identity, but perhaps fortuitous for those wanting a chance to sit down and talk to Vector Inlay about where some vicious mercenaries might be hiding out.
Vector Inlay
Vector Inlay.jpg
Vector is sweating buckets as he nervously says, " Oh thank you for finally showing up!" Vector looks right at Markus looking him over and nodding and as if reciting something someone else told him says, " Vick, always wears Triax armor distinctly from the NGR..." He wipes his brow with a hankerchief, and stows it in his pocket "I am Vector Inlay, I knew you guys were just running late... Well hoped, I was going to die, but here you are wearing the armor Giest said to keep an eye out for." He lets some stage hands surround the 13th as he corrals the 13th to the edge of the stage. "We are ready to broadcast live, no video, but the audio will... Heck we spared no expense it might get to the moon! All your instruments and gear arrived ahead of you, and we set it up per your directions. Common lets get these guys mic'd and ready to play. We got an orphanage to save..." A bit more subdued, as the the path is cleared for the 13th to take the stage, he tells the "Band" some last words which seem awfully out of place, as if Vector had some kind of arrangement with the real Drei Marbles Left. " When you guys are done, as promised I got you the information requested... We'll have that sit down."

The masses of patrons in attendance are cheering, Drei Drei Drei Folks are opening their cred sticks and heading to the kiosks to make donations. Vector gives you the double thumbs up and smiles! The house lights dim, taking on a deep purple. The stage beckons, glory awaits, and the fate of the Helpful House orphanage rests in the hands of the 13th.
Your Stage
Tonight you Rock.jpg
Welcome to the Dramatic Task, here are the rules, slightly modified
Assuming the 13th plays the Gloom Radio Station gig... We will do a dramatic task with a slight modification. That modification is that all players rolls add to the successes needed to achieve the task. Instead of running it for multiple turns it is just ran for one turn only.
  • Musical Prodigy: You are allowed to spend a benny to receive a +2 bonus in exchange for a short background interlude explaining how you learned to sing or play an instrument.
  • Scene modifier is a -4 for being stressful, and you guys not being musicians ( As stated before you can spend a benny for the musical prodigy bonus).
  • The Task: Play the concert gaining the goodwill of Victor Inlay and vital information concerning the whereabouts of the Black Company
    • 5 successes are needed to accomplish this task
    • Make a trait roll minus the scene modifier: Agility or Smarts for musical instrument playing. Spirit or Vigor if you are singing
    • Narrate your scene similar to a quick combat based on your roll.
      • Crit failure: you make it difficult on someone else. Give another player a -2 to their roll. How did your rocking hurt the performance?
      • Failure: You do not add to the overall success. How did your rocking not help?
      • Success: You have added to the overall success. How did your rocking succeed?
      • Each Raise: Adds an additional success. How did you become a rock star?
  • Every player's successes help achieve the requisite 5 to achieve the goal.
If you guys want to go in a different direction, I am for it. This is the scene you find yourselves in, so have at it.

Bane is walking (or more likely shuffling given the size of the crowd) with the rest of taking it all in when he realizes that Markus was mistaken as the lead singer of Drei Marbles Left. Luckily Bane was a fan himself having been to some of their concerts back Dweomer when he was on the DDF providing security, so he was familiar with what the whole band looked like. Before the lights came up, Bane casts Mass Disguise to make everyone look like the band members that would be playing the respective instruments they have while causing an illusion of the songsheets and lyrics float in the air in front of each person, while also making sure that the voices sound right (as much as Bane wants to, he can't make the music and lyrics appear out of thin air, he needs something to work off of). Bane himself makes sure to pick up the lead guitar and says to everyone "Hey guys, we got this! Bring it in, ONE TWO THREE LET'S GO!" (I use my Adventure Card Teamwork)

After providing security for a concert last year and after the fans were told to leave, Bane sat around shooting the shit with Lead Guitarist Tommy Macklin. After a couple of hours of talking, Tommy gave Bane some lessons on how to play and even gave him his guitar after signing. Bane kept practicing on it until he had recieved orders to investigate Castle Refuge when he made the hard decision to leave it behind because with no personal transport, not to mention the dangers of travelling, he didn't see a strong enough of a reason to bring it with him.

Libertas spends a few minutes hooking together a pair of keyboards in a way that probably makes sense if you use crystals to power devices all the time. "Okay, there. Almost exactly like the rig I had back in Stormspire. We had a small band for awhile--some of the other apprentices and I. All built our own instruments and everything. Might've been a success, but Pericles kinda went overboard on the amps. Blew the front out of the first bar where we had our first gig. Not just the glass--the front of the building literally ripped off the rest of the structure and fell into pieces in the street. We all had to use the instruments to make devices to get out of there before the guards arrived--though that is where I first design I used for the Beetle Box, so I did get something out of it."

As he gets the dual keyboard into position, he grins at Cantrell. "Hey, Sarge, want me to boost the amps?" Behind the goggles, his eyes actually twinkle.

Max shrugs. Eh. Could be fun. And it's for the kids.
"Couple sticks, couple pedals...how hard can it be? Almost like piloting a Titan, I think." Max assumes a position behind the drum kit, testing the high hat and kick pedals. Greeting the crowd with a hearty "'ello, Gloom!" Warming himself up to the idea, and warming up to the kit, he tries a few moves that look like combat maneuvers in Nadine.
Max's opening drum solo

Taking a cue from Bane's lead, Max quickly moves from simple kick-snare time keeping to loading in the occasional fill. Two songs in, he falls into rhythm. With pure natural talent, Max keeps the beat like clockwork, adding in some flourish and flavor as he finds his groove. Halfway through the set, he's playing up the crowd, adding no-look drum hits and stick twirls like a seasoned veteran of the stage.
I think I missed my calling!

We were an electronic fusion of Northern Gun Industrial and Whykin Soul. Called ourselves Earth, Wind, and Firehawk. I, naturally, was in charge of the visual pyrotechnics while they handled the songs."

As the rest of the group starts to play, Firehawk grabs a cowbell and launches himself into the air above the crowd, trailing fire and smoke wherever he goes as he rips his shirt off to reveal his ridiculously cut abs. He plays his cowbell and pulses his fiery aura in time with beat of the music, creating a visual companion to the music blaring from the speakers and probably freaking out any audience members under the influence of various substances. He also creates and extinguishes fires on the stage, in the air, and even on the instruments at various times throughout the show, always careful to let nothing and no one get burnt as he flies back and forth to the beat of the music.

Cantrell starts to protest when the group is mistaken for the NGR musical act, then watches in stunned silence as the other group members embrace the deception and begin talking excitedly about time changes and keys and song order. Operatic German electro-ska isn't really her bag, but she has an idea.

"Can someone show me to the soundboard? Die Wiggle Martian are particular about the mix," she says.

On the way she trades a sweat-stained bandana ("One of Vick's") to a fanboy in exchange for an audiochip with all of the band's song. At the soundboard, she jacks in and fires up her hacking utility. It only takes a minute to upload a program she'd used a few times in her Coalition days to augment false recordings or vocal impressions used to infiltrate enemy groups. The program was subtle, using pre-recorded samples of a target's voice to augment an impression and cover up minor errors. With the recordings of the real band's songs, she could patch them in to the soundboard mix to correct any off-key notes or other fumbles and make the 13th sound a little more like the real thing.

Zieja follows the other members of the SET up to the man named Victor. She is preoccupied looking out at the gathering crowd. Z has always loved music. Except for those few years that mother made her study piano. Seriously hated those pre-teen years. However later and a young teen Z (she is 18 now in case I never said) she found ways to rebel. Sneaking out to the burbs of Lonestar and hanging out with others in bars and dives was fascinating in comparison to being raised by the Lonestar's top General. Piano sucked ass but after spending a few months being a love struck puppy dog around Karla Lex, a gutter rat band member, Zie started playing bass to go with Karla's guitar. The two made love and music for 3 hot months until Karla was arrested by CS Peacekeepers for public intoxication, littering, public urination on a CS Officer and murder (same Officer while being arrested). The Karla days were gone but Z still had her bass guitar. Until the day she walked out on the CS and left all her possessions behind.

Just now registering the fact that the 13th was about to impersonate a NGR Rock Band, Z looks at the rest of the SET like they are freaking crazy. As the 13th set about pretending to be the band Zieja steps to the side of the stage and feels a tug at her arm.

Turning to see who is tugging on her arm Z sees a red head with blue eyes, dressed in black leathers and heavy eye makeup. Z's heart skips a beat, the girl is older than her but exactly what Z likes. The girl looks like Celia even.

"Excuse me Tasha Wicked, can I get your autograph? I'm Lala!"

Lala holds out a black marker and raises her shirt so Z can write on her stomach.

Zieja looks at Lala. After a moment Z holds up her finger to her lips, shhhh. Z beckons Lala to follow her. The two ladies exit the stage as the rest of the SET set up. Zieja grabs Lala's hand and pulls her into a room back stage and pulls the older girl into a grasp and kisses her. Holding Lala's red hair in her hand Z pulls it some, to expose Lala's neck, softly kissing the white skin Z looks up into her blue eyes and says, "I need to borrow your cloths and .. can you do my makeup?"

Breathing heavily Lala says, "God yes! I can't believe I'm talking to Lady Wicked!" and pulls Z closer.

Fade to black.

Closing the stage room door behind her Z makes her way to the stage where the rest of the SET are set up and preparing to rock. Leaving a worn out naked Lala behind Z snickers.

Making her way onto stage in tight black leather, her hair down, makeup on rocker style, Z sends a flirtatious wink at Jude and pats Cantrell on the ass as she walks by, "Boss." This is the first time anyone in the 13th has seen Zieja out of her black combat armor, or with her hair down. Instead of her usual tom boyish unkempt hair style Z has made her self up, with Lala's help.

Grabbing up the bass guitar Z loops the strap across her and stands, legs wide apart, in a rocker stance and belts out some wicked riffs to warm up. On the black guitar, in pink is written Z Tasha Wicked (as in, the Tasha Wicked).

Nodding at the others of the 13th Z has a large grin on and is thoroughly enjoying this change of pace.

"Rock on!"
Funny
FYI More than once this morning my wife raised an eyebrow at me, as I looked up the above "sexy" pictures. .... "Sure you're playing Rifts."

Markus sees the others and quickly follows their lead, impersonating the NGR band. With his knowledge, he can talk and comment about it, even if he is not a great fan himself.
"I am glad you Americans have the chance of enjoying some good German music."
Preparing with the others, he remembers the bass lessons he got in school. He recalls his music class, the auditorium filled with German young learning to play and sing, keep the tempo and appreciating the power of a team working together to achieve a goal, being it a good song or the survival of humanity. Too bad people in America had forgotten the power of education and culture.

He enjoys himself, playing as he has not played in quite some time, proud of the fruits of his NGR education.
Too bad the real band didn't make it. It would have been a good treat for these poor American people.

--

EDIT: Changing to lead Vocals.
Markus goes for a glass of cold water. He recalls, in his youth the time he spent with some friends in a gothic heavy metal band, with him as lead vocals, trying to get out all of the pressure and terror of the war against the DBees around the NGR in each song. They weren't half bad, but when they got conscripted into the army their band ended.
Where would his bandmates be right now? He just hoped they would be ok, still fighting the good fight against all the invading DBees at the NGR frontiers.
Tonight he would sing for them. For the NGR. For the orphans. And for all of the humanity.

I rolled these in the wrong place. I'll reroll below.

Jude enjoyed the room given them at the Pinnacle Hotel, the the octo-man was a little...weird. He hadn’t met one of those before.. He was grateful for the chance to get a hot shower and out of his smelly armor and into a change of clothes. Of course, he wasn’t about to walk the streets of Gloom without his gear, so a quick spray-down of his armor with some deodorant and he was back inside.

The town looked to be having its own trouble, and Jude offered up some of his rations to the hungry-looking orphans they passed. They were funneled into a crowd outside of a large converted warehouse that served as radio station and concert venue.

And then Marcus got “recognized.”

“Wait, we’re doing what?” Jude asked, blinking with surprise as they were drafted as the main performance for the night. “Um...can you guys even play?”

They were given a green room, but not much time. Jude rifled through the clothes that had been shipped ahead for the band. He raised an eyebrow and picked out an outfit. “Do we even know what these guys sound like?” Jude wasn’t into the German music scene. Someone played a recording while he dressed.

"I am glad you Americans have the chance of enjoying some good German music," Markus said.

Jude winced. “You call that music?” he asked skeptically. “Sounds like a bunch of screaming cats.”

Jude studied himself in the mirror. Black boots, tight black leather pants that showed off his ass, and a white, puffy and frilly shirt, tucked into the pants but open to expose his toned, muscled chest. He sat down at the vanity to do his hair and add some makeup, lots of black eyeliner and mascara.

As Jude worked, he watched Z disappear with a hot redhead into one of the bathrooms. He turned up the music a bit when he started hearing...sounds. When she walked out again, Jude gave a whistle at her outfit. Damn fine. He gave her a wink right back.

“Next time might want to keep the volume down,” he told her as he followed her out to the stage wings, grinning. He grabbed up a guitar. His own was actually back in their hotel room, ironically, though it was acoustic.

“This brings back some memories,” Jude murmured. As a rising courtier in the CS, it was expected that Jude would get some musical training, so he took the required piano and guitar lessons. He only really got serious about it when he discovered how much a girl really liked a guy that could sing or play or cook, so he redoubled his efforts, and actually became quite good. This, however, was definitely not his preferred type of music.

Jude was actually rather surprised to discover how good the rest of the team was. He knew Cantrell and Bane were providing a good amount of auto-tuning to help out, but still the crowd seemed to love it. Since Bane had claimed lead guitar, Jude stuck to rhythm. He moved close to Z, rocking out against her and her bass. God damn she was hot! If only she didn’t bat for the wrong damn team. Maybe he’d just have to find the right incentive. Like that redhead from backstage.

“Keep your eyes out for groupies,” Jude told her with a grin. “Invite them up to the hotel.”

As the concert neared the midpoint, Jude tossed Markus a bottle of water. “Take a break,” he said before turning back to the crowd.

“Time to take it down a bit. Give everyone a chance to catch their breath.” Jude put his guitar aside and picked up something else he’d found backstage, an electric violin. Jude flashed his winning smile at the screaming fans -- especially the females in the front row. “This is for all the ladies out there.” He blew them a kiss and set into a slower, more melodic ballad-like song, his bow flowing over the strings like silk as Libertas played the piano part.

The crowd grew hushed, listening, quiet, as Jude poured himself into the song, the violin’s haunting melody soaring to fill the space in the warehouse. As the last notes finally echoed, the floor erupted into a roar of applause. The audience threw flowers onstage. And...were those panties and bras, too?

Jude grinned and leaned down to the ladies in the front, bestowing kisses freely and taking numbers.

Markus smiles fiercely.
"That is what I meant. You Americans have no music education. No taste."
He stands as Jude sings a "slow" song, trying to win women. He shakes his head. Music is valuable for the music itself. But then again, he probably will find some company tonight.
Maybe German women could be around, looking for a compatriot to pass some time?

The Last song plays, and the crowd which perhaps doubled, nay trippled in attendance roared to life nearing blasting the 13th off the stage with the thunder of their adoration. Backstage Vector catches you his mouth agape, and tears streaming down his face. His words are a jumble of emotion and barely even coherent.
" That... That was beautiful. I mean did you see... I mean your music was heard beyond this world. I think Isis, that wizard from England, a couple of Splugorth, maybe even some kind of eye-ball and tentacle blob showed up for the last set... I mean where... How..." His stammering is drowned out my the unadulterated chanting from the crowd that is not going anywhere.
Drei Drei Drei DRIE DRIE DRIE. The warehouse/radio station seems to be shaking itself apart from the chanting.
DRIE DRIE DRIE

Vector gestures to the stage and yells over the cheering, " We'll talk after..." He winks at the group, " Find me here tomorrow before 9am." He steps back letting the 13th head back up to the stage for their encore performance. He yells as you head back to the stage, " Once more for the children."
OOC Comments
You guys have a moment of free RP either backstage, during the encore, or a bit after the show ends. 25 success, what!? +1 Bennie for everyone due to the overwhelming success. I'll try to get the next scene ready for you, but it is a meeting with Vector in the morning before he leaves.

Maybe it was fatigue from being airborne for the entire show, maybe it was disgust at yet another of Markus' bigoted comments, or maybe it was some unknown effect from that strange skunk smelling smoke that has continuously wafted up from the audience ever since the lights went out, but Firehawk decides he has had enough. With a mighty eagle screech, he dives from out of the rafters toward the stage. At the last moment he extends his wings to land gracefully in front of the microphone and overawes Markus' comments with a stunning display of fire extending from his wings.

Jude grinned and went to the front of the stage. He pulled out a sharpie he had found backstage and autographed some programs.

“I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABY!

Jude laughed at the raven-haired beauty that lifted her shirt, and he signed her naked breasts. “Maybe we can make that happen,” he teased her. “Gotta go, Liebchen,” he said as the music started again. He raced back to grab up his guitar and join in.

  • Zieja tries to contain her joy and finally decides to just go with it. She has smiled more in the last few hours than the entirety of her 18 years of life.

As Markus launches into more vocals, singing away she leans her back against him and plays like mad on the bass guitar as she nods her head wildly.

Standing up and moving closer to the crowd she looks out at all the humans and D-Bee's and thinks to her self, the 13th should go on tour and leave the fighting behind.

Once done she follows the others back stage again and sees the girl she borrowed the cloths from, wearing a shower curtain like a poncho?

Z steers clear of her not wanting to give back the new duds. Looks like the poncho wearing chick might be going after Bane now for an "autograph". Good.

Z reflects that being a run a way CS soldier, going by Tasha Wicked could be a great alias.

Seeing Libertas directing the "bands" new toys to be packed in the 13th vehicles Z smiles, good, because her two new favorite toys are the guitar and the rifle she took from Shadow.

Cantrell looks up, surprised, when the music stops.

I have lost all track of time, she thinks, as she tries to disentangle herself from the pile of groupies sprawled naked on the floor of the sound booth. She pulls a groping hand out of her waistband and stands up, pulling a tank top -- not her own -- over her head as she does.

Hands flying over the controls, she keeps the house lights dim, sharing in the crowd's expectation that an encore is coming. She swats away another set of fingers -- were there seven on that hand? Oh, yes, she remembered that one -- and queues up an old recording to keep the crowd on its feet.

"Let's f***ing do this sh**," she says, speaking along with the words on the recording as she cranks the volume to 11. Soon, the crowd is singing along, interspersing chants of "Drei, Drei, Drei!" with the normal lyrics.

<<Come on boys and girls, pull your pants back on and come out here and give 'em what they want!>> she calls over he comm.

As the group reappears, she briefly throws up the lights, the spotlights picking each out in turn as they launch into a blistering encore. She watches for a moment, grinning from ear to ear, before the seven-fingered hand reappears on her hip. Then she smiles wider and strips off the borrowed tank top, lowering herself back into the mass of bodies writhing on the sound booth floor.

"I think the 13th can take it from here ..."

Notice 5
[dice]0[/dice]
Wild Die [dice]1[/dice]
After Markus makes his Anti-DBee comments, Bane whispers into his ear "Dude, take it down a notch or five. Don't forget that we are technically undercover right now. It also might be prudent to remind you that it looks like 75% of the audience that you just made those comments to are DBee's."

After the final song is played, Bane walks with the others off stage and notices moaning sounds coming from the sound booth. Poking his head over the divider, he sees Cantrell half naked and tangled with other partially or fully naked forms. When she pops up to get everyone back on-stage for the encore, Bane could't help but notice his commanding sergeant as the woman she was instead of trying to maintain a professional distance. He raises an eyebrow and asks her "Enjoying yourself much there?"

Once they are finally done singing and in the dressing rooms, Bane notices a beautiful woman wearing a shower curtain as a toga approaching him. Gently taking her hand and kissing it, Bane says to her "Are you coming from a toga party for the show, or wanting to start one here? Actually that sounds like a fantastic idea!" He goes out of the room for a moment and finds either a stage hand or assistant and tells them "Bring us a stack of linens, we're having a toga party!" As soon as they arrive, Bane will strip and toss a sheet around himself like it were a toga. "Now that I am more appropriately dressed like a Roman emporer, how would you say to being my emperess for the night?" Bane asks the woman.

Markus gives a hard look to Bane.
"75%? Well, that was not my fault. Besides, that will make them think we REALLY are from the NGR."

The roar of the crowd still ringing in his ears, Max dismounts the drum riser and launches his sticks into the crowd. "Thank you, GLOOM!" he shouts. Rushing back stage and seeing the mingled flesh and the repurposing of the musical gear, he marvels at the amazing show cobbled together out of nothing. He muses to himself. I wonder what it would take to get Titan-sized drums. Talk about a show! Nadine behind the kit!
Out of the corner of his eye, he spots a blur of movement and his heart jumps a bit. Was that...no. There's no way. Not here. He moves on to shake off some of the sweat and find a shower. Drums are sweaty work, but worth the price paid!
