APPROVED ASSISTANCE ROLLS: Spirit, Faith or Intimidation

Day 1:

After dropping off the quartet with the Longtooth guards, Alec returns to the main group and, after stripping down, leads Zakkael and Echo to a region of extremely dense overgrowth. In addition, a thin fog rises up, clinging to the plants and making vision even harder in the area (of course, this proves no impediment to Echo's exceptional senses). As you reach a spot where there are no remaining ruins from before the jungle rose up, you see large clusters of bamboo growing up from the earth. Alec leans his head back and gives a massive roar--clearly, he's been practicing at this. After about five minutes, a trio of reptilian humanoids step forward, bearing spears of bamboo--with the roots still attached.

Alec explains in a kind of broken version of Gobbley that you're here to meet with Bakel-Mahr, the High Shaman. They nod soberly, and lead Echo and Zakkael off into the mist, which only gets thicker as they walk.

Eventually, they come to a region of barbed thickets, shaped into simple shelters. Other Edinos are there, most just laying back and enjoying themselves, apparently, humming or thumping trees to make simple music. Others are practicing fighting with the spears, and still others are sitting in what appears to be a form of meditation. It is difficult to tell sexes apart, despite the nudity. All watch as you arrive, curious and alert.

Floating above the strange village are curious creatures--crystalline jellyfish, their bodies oscillating light that is further refracted by the mist. Both of you can literally feel their emotions as you look at them--curiosity, caution, welcoming and warning.

Another Edinos steps forward, hide marked with ritual scarring, and raises a spear in greeting. Echo understands the words, and can translate for Zakkael. "Greetings. I am Balek-Mahr, High Shaman of the Lost Tribe of the Edinos. Al-ekwin has told us that the tower rising is one of evil and will bring death to this region, but in truth, the insect-people are more like us in many ways, in their life, for they do not use the dead things that you do. But, we do not know this world as well as we might, and so will hear your appeal."

Card Flip: Queen of Diamonds--No Complications, no bonuses

Start by having Zakkael demonstrate his strength of will or supreme faith in the Light, then have Echo roll.

Over time, it becomes obvious the mists are kept in place by almost perpetual Air castings of Elemental Manipulation; the same power, attuned to Earth, lets them wield the living bamboo spears. And as a side-note, there is NOTHING constructed in their territory, that you've seen. Most of the Swamp is overlaid on the ruins of multiple ages before it, but here, not a thing, not even visible soil--it's more an organic loam, similar to a peat bog. There are unworked rock formations here and there, and that is all--and even these are covered with moss and lichen.

He raises all four arms, spreading his wings, and recites.
"The prophet of old has said:
Your country will be desolate,
Your cities shall be burned with fire;
Strangers devour your land in your presence.
'Come now, and let us reason together,' says the Light.
Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Cease to do evil,
Learn to do good;
Seek Justice,
Rebuke the oppressor,
Defend the fatherless,
Plead for the widow.

And I, Zakkael, angel of Justice and Vengeance, say unto you and your people: aid us! Lend us your strength, before your strength alone is tested by these very same creatures. Help us rebuke and repel the oppressor!"
He bows again, and steps behind Echo.

May the Light guide Echo's words, and soften their hearts to help us.

Listening to the others and all the activity in the reptilian men’s culture Echo made sure to respect what they were respecting not not offend. A faux pas in this situation could mean these people would die as prey to the xiticix and she did not want that to happen.
Translating for Zakkael as needed Echo accepted the greeting from Balek-Mahr. “Thank you for seeing us and allowing us to speak with you High Shaman. This is Zakkael and I am Echo, the insect men are not like other natural creatures that find a harmony in the balance of things. They are predatory consumers who transform worlds.”
“Let me show you with my magic the nature of their consumption.” With gesture most humans would see as simply opening and closing his mouth Echo understands it is an Edinos gesture of assent and continues. Creating a small sculpture of their village, the valley and the tower, she shows the tower growing as small swarms sweep out a little at a time.
“Each land they go to begins with only a few, sometimes even only a queen. However once she starts bringing forth drones and warriors they seek out food and grow. Each time as they expand they consume more until there is nothing left but their hives fore many days walk.” As she speaks she shows the tower growing as swarms of the insectine creatures pour out consuming everything in their path smaller hives being spawned in the distance, but the Edinos only losing a little to their scouts.
“Eventually they find all that is around them, even those that they allowed to exist without concern and consume them as well.” With those words she shows a great swarm pouring out in all directions and consuming the model of the edinos village as if it was little more than the dust in the wind.
Then she delivers the pitch they were expecting. “By allying with each other we stand a chance. As a team we can destroy the hive and the queen that has come to this area before the swarms can do this.
“The scene I showed you was not something that would takes life times. But one that can take only a few seasons. Within a number of seasons that can be counted on the fingers of a hand they will have consumed most of this valley.”
Once she is finished with the opening of her speech Zakkael and her interact with the edinos as much as they are willing. Sharing food and using the rest of the evening to learn as much as she can of their culture.

The words of the two have clearly made a strong impression on the Edinos. They are convinced that the insect-men cannot be reasoned or bargained with--that the only options are fight or flight. They remain unconvinced that this is their fight, though, or that they should ally with their rival tribes if they do choose to go into battle.

Card Draw: 9 Hearts--No Complications
You are roused from slumber the next morning in the pre-dawn twilight, enhanced in both beauty and threat by the strange, clinging mists. They take you with them on the day's hunt, letting you demonstrate your worth (and the worth of the Light that Zakkael serves, in practical matters). You get to witness how the Edinos themselves are able to work with the power of their goddess, Lanala. It is an impressive display; in addition to being able to pluck living spears from the bamboo all around you, and call up mists that let them sneak up on prey, they display a wide variety of individual miracles that greatly enhance their ability to hunt. One even simply speaks to a dinosaur twice his size; it comes over, turns its head to one side, and lets him slit its throat.

Over freshly killed breakfast (they eat their meat raw; if you are not inclined to do the same, you can focus on freshly picked nuts, berries and roots), Balek-Mahr presses you on the subject of how they are supposed to trust the mammal-tribes, who adorn themselves in dead things. Would it not better, he asks, to let the warmbloods and the bugs destroy one another, and claim the valley for themselves?

And here we go again. Zakkael's piece should be about using miracles on the hunt. Also, both of you should roll Knowledge Arcana, if you've got it; for each success/Raise, I'll reveal an additional Power from the Lanala Faith's list of permitted Powers, beyond environmental manipulation and obscure--just so you know what you're dealing with, here. Then have Echo make her second Persuasion effort.

Zakkael participates in the hunt. But before their departure, he calls upon the Tongues of the Prophets. A tongue of fire dances on his head as he speaks in the edinos' language.
"Bless us, Light, on our hunt for sustenance. Protect us as we go; and deliver unto us our daily meal. Bless our dominion over these animals. And Your blessing upon these, our hosts, for their kindness and generosity, and their willingness to hear our words."
While on the hunt, Zakkael's tromping through the swamps stirred a very, very large snake. He chooses not to react as the snake lunges and latches onto his arm. He stands up straight and allows the snake to try to dig its fangs into his arm. Carefully, he grasps the snake at the base of the head, then pulls the fangs from his arm. "You will not feast on me this day, serpent. No weapon formed against me shall prosper." He offers the reptile to the leader of the hunt, to do with as he wishes. Once the snake is appropriately disposed of, whether released or ended, Zakkael lifts his arm where the snake tried to bite. No fang marks can be seen.
"It is said that in the later days, you shall take up serpents, and they will not harm you. Such is the protection of the Light of Heaven. This snake's bite would have meant death, perhaps even to ones of your gifts. However, the Light watches over me. I shall tread the serpent under foot and fear not."

Echo joins in the hunt with the Edino's sharing the responsibilities of hunting and feeling the clan with them for this one bonding moment. Working to translate the words of her friend, while also listening to the ques of the Edinos.
When they bring up the idea of standing back and allowing the humans and Xiticix to kill each other off, she does her best to point out the risk in that point of view. "Alone the humans and other beings in the area simply will not be able to stop the xiticix. They will be injured a small bit, but for only a brief period."
Pointing out some small animals she adds. "You may see rabbits or chickens and think they grow quickly. But a xiticix queen can lay thousands of eggs every month. Once her hive is full a new queen will move on from there and within only a few seasons the area will be completely under their control. This is not a threat that can be ignored, or you can hope will leave the *Edinos alone. This is a threat that will find your village and consider it a threat. The result will be they will eat all of your people."
"Please reconsider these things tonight and do not take my words lightly."

The lizard-folk are clearly impressed by Zakkael's divine protection--many of them could achieve a similar result, of course, but still, it is good to know he is clearly a peer in this regard. And they nod gravely at Echo's words, the leader saying he must confer with Lanala before that night, and will talk further in the morning.

Day Three

On the third day, the leader of the tribe calls you both forth.

Balek-Mahr nods gravely. "Lanala has confirmed the truth of your words. We have only one final point--do you feel we can trust the ape-tribes to uphold their part in this battle, and to not seek to betray us at the end, when we are weak?" Of course, this is similar to the idea he floated the day before, though without an element of betrayal--perhaps that is the key, rather than the opportunism itself, that concerns him.

Same deal as the prior two days, but now it's a lot easier--Echo merely needs a simple success to get there. Zakkael can give some sort of blessing, if he wishes, or he can just let Echo go to town on her own--barring a Critfail, you two got this.

Echo has too much respect for the Edino's to lie to them and tells them the truth. "My friends and I are working very hard to try and get all of the clans to work together to fight this terrible threat. But in honesty it is possible some of you may not respect the work and effort of the others.
"I believe the warrior women will honor the efforts and allying with them will help. The Longtooth, the ones you call ape men, I think will respect any show of strength.
