21. We're Gonna Need a Bigger SET

The End

Battle rages around you. Angry roars, barking weapons, screaming metal… it’s almost become routine for the 32nd by now.

A familiar, unsettling fullness settles over you, as if some foul darkness were sliding into your minds, and something big (beyond big!) begins to emerge from the water…

Flashback!

The scene changes, and the camera cuts to beneath the tunnels, before the team emerges into the final combat.

You have made it through the subterranean depths to the control room, and several hours have passed as you did so.

Before the final battle begins, this is a last opportunity to post an interlude for your characters. If you get writer’s block, I’m happy to give you a prompt, but, as I mentioned in my PM last week, if there’s something you really want your character to do or say or think, this is a chance to do it. Maybe Sierra has a visit from dear old dad. Maybe Norona has one last chat with swamp thing. Maybe Toshiro finally says something out loud.

As a reward for your interlude, you may add one advance, piece of gear, or vehicle (including robot vehicles or power armor) to your character sheet. Just describe how your finds whatever it is s/he finds and make it make sense for the story, and it’s yours.

In addition, everyone gets an extra Benny going into this battle. We haven’t been doing the “free Benny per quarter for good writing” thing of late, but that kind of goes out the window, here, and you all get a freebie. You’ll need it. :)

If you have any questions, shoot me a PM or message me on Hangouts.

Fighting in the dark. Plodding in the dark. Up is down. Down is up. Time is lost.

The march through the tunnels is only broken up by the occasional skirmish with the clay men, and even they seem to dissipate as the group gets closer to whatever lurks beyond the tunnels. In this state of disoriented delirium Norona feels like he is floating, and then he can feel the presence of the swamp. The roots around him, out to the tips of the branches of the trees, the animals - mighty and minuscule. He is aware of everything and everything is pushing him down the tunnel. One way or another what happens at the end of the tunnel will dictate the future of things. Hopefully, there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

The life force of the entire swamp surges through him, healing his wounds and replinshing his spiritual reserves. His spirit is aware of a swamp teeming with life. In this flash of awareness Norona can sense the movement of a pack of Clay Men. At first he assumes they are coming to attack again but through the swamp he can feel their intentions. They too know the evil that awaits, and have come to join the fight.
Benefits

GM Mini Update: Because @Norona mentioned replenishing PPE, I should've mentioned that you are able to sense a ley line as you approach the end of the tunnel. If you are a PPE user, feel free to narrate drawing on it. Norona gets a Benny for inadvertently reminding me, and he can go ahead and pick a different boon if he wants.

The 32nd was gathered in a command center, at least most of them were, in a partially submerged series of tunnels. Lighting was poor. The trip thus far had been slow. The minor respite was welcome none the less.

As the team came out of the command center and resumed there respective posts on the ground or in the various vehicles, they noticed a light ahead that had not been there before. Filling the tunnel not more than ten feet ahead was a mound of earth, fresh green grasses covered the entirety of its slopes. A lone figure sitting in the middle of the mound flanked by maybe a half dozen claymen, motions for the team to come join them on the mound.

It seems that the lone figure is particularly interested in speaking with @Norona and @White Castle.

When the two finally arrive at the mound, he greats White Castle first, as Brother Long Strides. White Castle recognizes the figure as one Pahi Oki, a local tribesman he encountered in the Everglades, a while back.

To Norona he stands and extends a hand, “Swamp Brother, We welcome you.

Pahi Oki: “Men of Clay say you head to Castle in the Jungle.

Nods from both Castle and Norona.

Pahi Oki: “Warriors from my tribe were many. Came to Castle many moons ago. Tribe almost died.

Pahi Oki: “Pahi Oki take journey to Castle in the Jungle with Swamp Brother and Long Strides?

Sierra yawned as she trudged along through the tunnels. She was really getting tired of this. How much farther?

“Not much farther,” said a smooth, cultured voice beside her.

She jumped, and looked to the side. The handsome man from her dreams was there, walking beside her. “What the hell? Where’d you come from?” She looked around. None of the others were paying much attention.

“Oh, they can’t see me, love.”

“So I’m crazy?”

“Well, that would be up to you.” The man flashed that melting smile she’d see him give her mother.

“You’re my dad, aren’t you?” she said.

“You are a smart one,” the man chuckled. “And when this is all done, I will be waiting for you, my dear Sierra. I have so much to teach you.”

And then Sierra blinked, and he was gone.

“Fuck. I really need to lay off the bad weed,” Sierra muttered. It looked like more Clay Men up ahead, so she fired up, being as intimidating as possible, taking a long swallow of her moonshine.

As the crew works its way further down the tunnel the continued attacks become tiering. Luckily there are enough breaks to keep exhaustion at bay. Another advantage is that Kuikku has plenty of opportunity to fine tune some of his fighting techniques. As they finally approach what he hopes is the end of the tunnel he feels more confident and is ready to face whatever may be waiting.
