The Nameless - Initiation

Post by Beowulf85 »

"You may have only been here for a few days, or you may have been here for a few months. Either way, two things are apparent.
Firstly, this world and its people need help. The most immediate concern are survivors from the destruction of Tolkeen, refugees of all sorts who are pursued and without a home, both soldiers and civilians. For some of you the Tolkien conflict is personal. These are certainly not the only people who need help, the forces of good and evil vie for this planet in a palpable way that purvaydes every sense. Rifts open unpredictably, ley line storms scorch the landscape, armed groups of all sorts rise and fall on a daily basis. This planet is dangerous and unpredictable.
Secondly, you are able to help. Some of you have power, some of you have training, some of you have skills, and all of you have abilities that can make a difference. All of you can make this world a better place.
Will you?"

High Defender Hammerheart paces The Hall of Hope as she speaks, obviously filled with passion and believing her own words.

"Castle refuge is growing daily, both structurally and in population. As we have gained the means we have formed new groups of like-minded heroes, and today I am glad to say that we have the means to do so again. Each of you have shown yourselves to be exceptional individuals, and so to each of you I extend the invitation to more permanent members of The Tomorrow Legion. Should you accept it will be up to you to appoint a group leader amongst yourselves. You have the rest of the day to consider your choice. Tomorrow morning those of you who accept will be sent on an exploratory mission as members of the newest group in the Tomorrow Legion. Unless there are any questions you are dismissed to discuss this amongst yourselves and consider your choice.

Ulrich Von Schlierkamp listens to Hammerheart give her speech. It seems like one the High Defender has practiced and used for other new members but none the less, Hammerheart believes every single word of it. This philosophy is also one Ulrich can get behind as well. The common man, and even the uncommon, need protected from wrongful persecution and judgement of nothing other than being unlike those that judge them.

Even with all of Ulrich's training in various ways of fighting he can see the need for diplomatic speech first. Killing should always be the last resort and even the enemy can sometimes be reasoned with in rational discussion.

All these thought go through Ulrich's head but all the others of the room would see is a man standing in a strict military stance wearing a helmet and a gas mask hanging in front of his chest. His bare face looks to be of even greater age than his early forties as his military life has taken its toll.

Image

After being dismissed Ulrigh will give a European style salute and take a step back and spin on his heal facing the door. Making a short brisk walk towards the door I open it and wait for my fellow unit members to fallow holding it for them.

Chevy sprawls on his chair, trying heroically to look like he's paying attention. For Ghu's sake, why doesn't anyone ever say the important things in their recruitment speeches? Just answer two questions: What will the job take and how much will it pay?

He gives a silent sigh of relief when the ordeal ends and straightens up to his feet, scooping up his helmet from the floor on the way. He saunters towards the door, eyeing the tall Germanic fellow holding the door. He gives a jaunty salute and exits, ambling towards the recreation room in the hope it provides the liquid kind.

Whitaker blinks a little in response to the beginnings of Hammerheart's speech.

Following a dwarf, you can do this. They're just like other people, despite what your family always said.
Hammerheart wrote:...this world and its people need help...
Helping people is good. You're a good person!

As the High Defender paces, Whitaker muses to himself.

I wonder if her armor is just smaller than human sized, or if the dimensions are different? I bet I could make it better. She probably wouldn't want to have something built into the armor to make her twice as big. Well, she might, but I probably shouldn't suggest that.
Hammerheart wrote:You have the rest of the day to consider your choice.
What was that? Pay attention!

"Defender Hammerheart, what's the biggest threat to the Tomorrow Legion? What should we be looking out for?"

He looks around, a little startled that he just blurted that out. Smooth, Whit. Way to go. He steps back and tries to blend in with the other recruits a bit.

Whitaker Varley wrote:"Defender Hammerheart, what's the biggest threat to the Tomorrow Legion? What should we be looking out for?"
Hammerheart pauses in her pacing to think for a moment before replying.

"In a word, mister Varley," she responds, "apathy. Our greatest enemy is when those who could make this world a better place stand idly by, doing nothing unless it concerns or benefits them directly. A solitary creature can hardly expect to change the world, but when one takes the initiative to find other like-minded creatures, there is nary a force in the three galaxies that can stop them.

Ulrich stands like a statue holding the door still looking forward when Whitaker asks his question. his eyes look towards Hammerheart as she answer and narrow as he nods ever so slightly with approval of the response.

Having seen firsthand what the consequences of people getting comfortable and not taking action can be Ulrich agrees with the Dwarf.

Leo listened to the briefing at what amounted to a position of parade rest - feet shoulder width apart, hands clasped behind his back, eyes focused on a spot six inches above the dwarf's right shoulder. His focus faded in and out of the briefing as Hammerheart proceeded, his mind elsewhere for the most part.

Well, this is what you'd come here to do, Alexander, he thought to himself. Didn't think too much about the separation from Selaene, did you? You're going to need to find more permanent lodgings for her, and try and find someone to keep an eye on here, aren't you? He stewed for a moment more in self recrimination, Would've been smart to handle that ahead of time, huh?

Once the dwarf had finished her speech and asked for questions, he shifted his gaze to her fully and asked, "Ma'am, what sort of resources can we expect to have access to as full members of the Legion?"

He snorted mentally. Mihaila would probably laugh her ass off if she saw that he reverted to psuedo-military formalism in what he saw as formal situations.

Ulrich stays quiet at the door as others ask the questions he is thinking.

Not being the most social of individuals he learns more about people through observation than actual conversation most of the time.

The Cyber-knight's question is a valid one. If you are going to officially become a member of an organization it is always good to know what benefits they can offer for your services. Ulrich has thus far just claimed a percentage of salvage and donated the remaining to the legion but that is more than likely about to change if a contract is in the works. The German does not expect to get rich doing this job but one must pay for their existence somehow. As long as three square meals, some basic needs, and the ability to replace equipment that has been lost for the cause is what is offered, working for the legion is worth it.

"My apologies," she starts, "I thought you were already aware. At the most basic all legionaries are provided with full medical care, quarters within the castle, quality food, inclusive technical and mechanical support for gear and armor, ammunition reloads, weekly salary depending on one's rank and skills with potential for advancement, and potential bonuses that can be earned on any mission. Any of you with families or loved ones may bring them to the castle where they will also be provided for, and we have a policy to provide continuing care for anyone who is injured or the families of those who fall in service. We also have a sympathetic salesman from Northern Gun, Chuck Jones, who offers discounts to all Legionaries. We encourage business with him as he actively financially supports our relief funds for new arrivals in need of support.

"In addition, our contracts are not exclusive, should you find the opportunity to profit elsewhere during your service no one will complain, provided it does not interfere with your responsibilities here or run opposed to our vision. We only ask that you act as our representatives and leave a good impression with any other employers.

"Finally, base pay starts at 300 credits a week regardless of weather one is deployed. Missions pay varying amounts depending on the nature of the assignment. I'll see that each of you receive a copy of the details to look over for yourselves."

Spellweaver listened to the Defender of Hope speak. It was so strange how similar, and at the same time, how different the dwarves of this world were to his native world of Shaintar. The consistent height difference of perhaps 6 inches was the most obvious, but there were countless smaller things as well. He found himself missing home more and more recently, but this world still fascinated him. There was still so much to see.

I can afford to spare a decade or two still.

Spellweaver heartened to hear such talk from the top of the Legion's command structure. His apathy during his service to the True Federation of Magic still haunted him. Calm down. That why we're here isn't it?

Though he knew better, Spellweaver had little interest in finding out the logistics of his employment. He was confident the Legion would house and feed him. He'd figure out the rest as needed. He walks through the door held open by the masked human and steps outside the room.

Those who have met with in the Hall of Hope hear from outside, first the sounds of warning sirens, and then the screams of the populace.

Rushing inside is a man dressed in mismatched armor (all fitting) and approaches Hammerheart. "There is a d., dra., dragon outside ma'am."

Those who go out to see the scene would see a hover skiff gliding down the street. On board is a mix of devices and electronics in the midst of which sits a red dragon.

Quite in awe of its surroundings it is unaware that its tail is hanging over the edge and behind the skiff. A little girl breaks away from her mother and chases after the tail flipping back and forth.

Seeing the gathering crowd, the skiff comes to a stop. As the skiff stops the little girl with her mother running after her catches up to the dragon's tail flopping back and forth and grabs it. The dragon in shock lifts its head in the air and spews forth a jet of flame in the air. Then looking behind itself notices its tail in the hands of the little girl.

Ulrich Steps towards the Large dragon and stops about 40 feet away and speaks lowdly. If you have never heard Dragonese/Elvish then you are now hearing for the first time with a heavy German accent.

Translated from Dragonese/Elvish. "Guten tag Dragon. I haf had several encounters vith your kind but I am sadly not a scholar to know any better. Are you male or female so ve might address you properly und vhat are your intensions?"

Ulrich waits for the dragon's reply which will determine if he moves with haste to many his Mech to defend civilians.

"I am versed in the Mystic Arts. Though I'm not certain if it will avail me much in this instance."

He turns back to the dragon and motions him to respond.

In his juvenile way the Red Dragon blows his version of a Raspberry at Chevy with little tendrils of flame and smoke.

Turning just his head to look at Ulrich as he settles to the ground with his legs folded beneath him and the tail still being played with by the little girl. In American he says, "I have read about food being stored in metal cans before the Rifts. There was a caution about the cans being beaten and dented. So are you bad food?"

"My name is ArkTech." As he says his name the little girl on the end of his tail squeals and says "AwkTech". The mother is too terrified to even approach any further or even correct the little girl.

Still studying the pile of assorted electronic junk, Chevy remarks off-handedly, Not sure what they have around here that'd fit your scaly butt, LL. Maybe a stable?"

"Metamorphosis maybe better." Again a pause as AwkTech glances at the young girl.

Taking back his tail and handing the little girl back to her mother, AwkTech climbed back into the skiff. Palming the controls, he drives it towards the vehicle garage. Parking the skiff he climbs out the back and finds a wall to lay down behind for a bit.

Minutes later, from the entrance of the vehicle garage strolls a young human boy in a red leather jacket and brown leather pants. His feet and hands are bare. His head has wild unkempt auburn red hair.

The young boy pauses having only walked a few feet from the garage and almost places his hands on the ground like he was going to bear crawl but stopped himself. Strolling up to those specifically gathered outside the Hall.

"Excuse me, where is the mess hall?"

The mess hall is currently filled with those dismissed from the Defender of Hope's speech. Spellweaver walks up and collects two trays of food. Complete with a double portion of banana pudding for himself.

Pudding is perhaps one of the things I like best about this world.

He sets one tray in front of the metamorphosed ArkTech and sits down across from him. His spear propped against the table. It was a novel experience, sitting to eat with a dragon, rather than trying to avoid being eaten by one.

What brings you to the Legion ArkTech?

It takes ArkTech a little longer to reach the Mess Hall (new area and short legs) and he finds himself constantly running on two legs to catch up. When he arrives, he finds himself winded and with sore legs. "I need to practice in this form."

At the Mess Hall he loads what he can on a platter and then watches the others eating to see how "this form" should perform.

With a mouthful of food, "Mother's instructions were to find a human populace other than the Coalition," at this point, having forgotten to swallow his food before talking, food particles spray out in front of ArkTech in a deadly cone of spewed food.

Spellweaver calmly uses a napkin to wipe off the food he was dusted with and drops it on ArkTech's tray. I've lost my appetite. He gets up and leaves before he loses his temper and resorts to something more drastic. As he heads to his quarters for meditation and sleep he thinks. I really hope that dragonling is placed in a different group.

Over in another table, Chevy hoots with laughter and holds up a makeshift sign with "9.5" scribbled on it.

Sounds of loud coughing echos throughout the Mess hall as Ulrich has one of his flare ups. Using a handkerchief to cover his mouth those observing closely will notice a few spots of blood on the pocket rag in his hand as he puts it back in his trench coat pocket. After getting through the line Ulrich notices that the little dragon/boy seems to have a clear table so I walk over and sit.

Taking off my helmet Ulrich places it next to himself and places the tray on the table. He then pulls out a stein and the small keg. Poring some ale for himself Ulrich looks at the Dragon.

"Ich am not sure is alcohol vould be a goot zhing for somevon who physiology iz von zhat breaths fire to try in such a populated room. I vill offer you some bear on a later date, jah?"

Ulrich smiles at the dragon/boy and takes a few swigs of the bear.

Chevy saunters over to join Ulrich and AwkTech.

"Oi! I had a table all set waiting for you, Fritz, and you go and sit with Lizard Lips here. Makes a fellow feel unwanted!"

He plonks down next to the German with a glass ready. "But a few swigs from your brew there will go a long way to show there are no hard feelings, eh?"

With a wink towards the young dragon, he continues cheeringly, "Besides, what are you thinking, offering alcohol to a minor? Must be true what I've heard about Krauts feeding their babies beer instead of mother's milk."

Ulrich lets out a short quick laugh and poor some beer for Chevy.

ArkTech's human mouth hangs open as Spellweaver leaves. Having half a mind to lick the wizard with a whip of flame, he remembers he is in another form. He continues to eat as the German Mech Man and the ..., the ...,

Looking at Chevy, "Are you a Quick-Flex," he blurts out before jamming his mouth full, again. This time he swallows before answering the Mech Man's first question with a statement, "It's not water. Is that gasoline?"

Finishing off his platter of food, the Dragon Boy looks at the two across the table, "I am not sure what I should be doing here. Seems like a lot of R ... Re ... Refuge have that question on their minds. By human standards I am a few days old. Just not sure but I do need a place to stretch out soon."

"Guilty as charged," Chevy replies. "There's a few of us scattered about, although no relatives that I'm aware of." His voice goes a little flat on that last sentence.
This time he swallows before answering the Mech Man's first question with a statement, "It's not water. Is that gasoline?"
Chevy chokes a laugh. "Can't rightly say until I get a taste, but I'll let you know." He takes a swig of the proffered beer and smacks his lips. "Not bad. Certainly better than the engine drippings I've had before." He downs the glass and sets it down invitingly close to Ulrich.
Finishing off his platter of food, the Dragon Boy looks at the two across the table, "I am not sure what I should be doing here. Seems like a lot of R ... Re ... Refuge have that question on their minds. By human standards I am a few days old. Just not sure but I do need a place to stretch out soon."
"I'm sure we can find you a spot, kid." He eyes the young dragon for a moment. "You're all right. You hang with us, we'll help you out, right, U-man?" he directs the last to Ulrich as he nudges the glass in a not-so-subtle hint.

Ulrich smiles and fills Chevy's glass with some of his home made brew for him to sample.
