9. Lure of the Wilderness

Post by Pursuit »

Conditions: The temperature is above 90 degrees fahrenheit and the humidity is high. No ley line is nearby the town, though you might find one as you venture farther from civilization. The ever present muck of swamp mud is everywhere, as are mosquitos eager to dine on any exposed skin.

That’s Odd…

Outside the town, Toshiro communicates to Norona the general weirdness of the too quiet swamp. Upon activating his magical sight, Norona finds strong traces of exceptionally dark magic crisscrossing game trails everywhere he looks. Once he knows where to look, he finds sets of odd looking tracks, with footprints of different sizes spaced at ever increasing intervals as they race off into the swamp.

He loses the tracks when he reaches water too deep to see the mud beneath, but telltale signs of something’s passing can be seen from scrapes on trees and disturbed vegetation.

Heroes First!

Like the heroes they are (well, that most of them are), the 32nd determines that it is time to save the town from the magical illness that (quite literally) plagues them. With Toshiro and Norona’s discovery of some kind of dark magical threat looming and a creature on the loose, it does not take much to put two and two together and surmise that they might be related.

The way is murky and mucky, but not so deep that the vehicles will have much trouble passing, should the party choose to bring them along on this run. If you do bring them, Jareb has made darn sure they are well supplied with plenty of water for the trip. If you do not, make sure you’ve got some supplies on you for the trip.

Note: Encumbrance will matter for this story arc! Per the core rules, we only deal with encumbrance when thematically appropriate, and stomping around in a hot swamp sure seems appropriate. We’re on the honor system (I will not be auditing your character sheets for encumbrance), but please make sure to take encumbrance into account if your character is carrying more than his/her maximum weight. For ease of reference, the encumbrance rules can be found on page 49 of Savage Worlds Deluxe, and there is a handy table on page 65 of the TLPG.

Into the Swamp!

What follows will be a series of challenges over three extended rounds (which take place over the course of time periods much longer than the typical 6 seconds of combat) for the party to complete in order to (hopefully!) unravel the mystery of what is ailing the town!

For each challenge, one player character will be the Team Leader, and you may decide amongst yourselves who that leader will be. The Team Leader MUST roll one of the listed skills for the challenge, which are explained below. The other members of the Team Leader’s team may roll any skill that makes sense as a cooperative roll, adding +1 to the Team Leader’s result for each success.

For the opening round, the party will need to complete two challenges simultaneously, and each player character may help on only one challenge or the other. The party will need a total of 3 successes on each challenge, or bad stuff may occur. You have been warned!

Challenge 1: Where There’s a Will, There’s No Way Forward

As you move further into the swamp, anyone with an arcane background can feel a familiar inky blackness of the mind creeping into your thoughts. The air feels a bit thicker, but nowhere near as oppressive as when the party fled from the shadows behind the flickering blue light of the swamp’s guardian spirit, and you can tell that something’s will is opposing you.

To overcome this challenge, the Team Leader must roll an Arcane Skill (spellcasting, psionics, weird science, etc.) or an applicable knowledge skill (Arcana makes the most sense, but Occult or some other related field of study could apply) and narrate the results. Other team members may roll any skill that makes sense and add +1 to the Team Leader’s result for each success and raise.

The arcane team will need to accumulate 3 total successes in order to succeed.

Challenge 2: The Woods Have Eyes…Best Not to be Seen

As you get closer to your goal, one of you catches sight of a human hiding in the trees as if keeping watch. Upon closer review, several humans can be seen along various trails, and their numbers increase as you move deeper into the swamp. These people carry rudimentary looking weapons and wear armor that appears to be made of leather and bone, like the barbarians of old pre-Rifts stories. Whether by intuition or by training, you know it would not go well if any of these sentries were to alert their comrades to your presence. Best to try and slip by, if you can.

To overcome this challenge, the Team Leader must roll Arcane skill (spellcasting, psionics, etc.), Driving, Fighting, Notice, Piloting, Riding, Shooting (though I would only recommend this with a silent weapon, such as a laser), Survival, Stealth, Throwing or Tracking and narrate the results (Note: Vehicular rolls incur an additional -4 due to their being real hard to hide). Other team members may roll any skill that makes sense to them and add +1 to the Team Leader’s result for each success and raise.

Because these sentries are on the lookout for intruders, all of your rolls for this challenge must be made at -2. This includes the cooperative rolls.

The tactical team will need to accumulate 3 total successes in order to get past the barbarian sentries unseen.

Risks and Rewards

Besides potentially helping the town, the party might be able to win some rewards for itself if it manages to successfully complete all of the challenges it will face over the next three extended rounds (in the form of extra Bennies and potential other goodies). But be warned: failure on any individual challenge will make the difficulty of other challenges go up, and failure to complete the overall mission could lead to the GM getting a bunch of neat rewards instead of the players (including bonus GM Bennies! Mwah-hah-hah-hah-ha!)

Good luck!

Toshiro didn't care what the others thought. He could get the APC through the woods quitely. And it was going to be a hell of a lot better than packing all the food and water they needed and bringing it with them on foot.

Now... That didn't mean it was easy. Even having been fully repaired it engine seemed to squeal if toshiro left it at the wrong RPM for more than a few seconds. Though there was often a path wide enough to travel on, it was littered with rocks, fallen trees and a variety of other debris...some man made... That made navigating it quietly a Herculean task. But toshiro was up for it. It wasn't like he was going to sneak the ATV by any eyes watching the road, but with just a little luck, no onr who wasn't watching the road would hear them pass by.

Jareb better manage to can take care of anyone with eyes on the road. Toshiro things as he wipes some sweat from his brow as he swings the wheel hard to the left to avoid yet another deep pothole.

Tyraxas alternates between scouting sorties from above and walking with the group into the swamp. The familiar dark essence begins closing in, but Tyraxas is undaunted by the powerful will. He works his magic to bolster the spirits of everyone traveling with them. "This...presence...again besets us. We will not be cowed. Stand firm with me, and let us sort out this devilry once and for all." He places a draconic hand on Sierra, sending inner strength and resolve coursing through her. "I will see this thing broken and the townsfolk restored."

It was hot. I could barely fly. The jungle is just my place. Days on end looking and searching. All it took was a quick water break and then the eyes I felt always on me took form. It looked at me and it was all I could do to defend my self against its bladed will. Where did it come from, why was it here. It came at me like one of the Deevils I used to fight against. Gift did her part too. We were put to the test, 13th celestial general and his mute charge. It was a short fight, a quiet fight. Over faster than it was started, we were lucky to be alive. Hopefully it was worth it and the appointed team leader could find our efforts useful. Whatever this Deevil was it would not be issuing a warning.

Post by Deezy Klatta »

Deezy opted to ride in Toshi's vehicle for the swamp crawl, but she spent almost as much time leaning out the window as tucked inside. Her goggles were down over the visor of her helmet, ticking merrily away as she catalogued the flows of psychic energy through the swamp and marked anomalous areas or spots with dangerous buildups.

When they spotted the natives lurking about, Deezy was quick to slap together some weird thing that looked like an umbrella, and scooted out onto the top of the ATV. Opening it, a cascade of rippling colors descended over and around the vehicle and quickly changed to match the swamp around them. From outside even the sound was muffled...not so much made quiet as garbled so that it wasn't recognizable as an engine. It could have been crocs thrashing in the water, or the deep warbling of some weird swamp monster.

Kuikku tucks his two crosses into his belt, closes his survival pack, and starts away from the vehicle. ”Sierra, I want you taking lead for our scouting line. Deezy, you stay with the vehicle and make sure it says safe. The rest of you go where you think you can do the most good and let's see if we can figure out what this critter is and where to find it. Along the way keep an eye out for any thing weird.”

As the party works its way through the swamp Kuikku keeps in contact with everyone via his radio. More than once he is glad that he had Deezy work in those water repellent... things. Keeping the mud and muck off his feet and legs is making this trek much easier. It also allows him to focus a bit more on tracking whatever it is they were following.

When the vehicle radios that they have encountered humans, or at least humanoids, it explains some of the signs he had seen. I really should have Norona teach me a bit about how to actually survive in a wilderness. ”Ok, everyone keep quiet and let's see if we can avoid a confrontation. Scout team, make sure you don't lose the trail but don't get seen either.”

Spotting the activity of the many tribesmen, and hearing the opressive noise of the vehicles, Norona shakes his head and stows his gear.

"The best way to be unseen is to go where the enemy is not. I will go ahead and report their movements so we can always be where they have already been or have not yet arrived."

Moving through the forest, his pack and other gear stored in an APC, Norona moves lithely with little effort. His environmental magic makes the heat and humidity of the swamp unnoticeable. In fact, it's kind kid of annoying how easily and effortlessly he moves and how the heat, mud, and bugs, just seem to ignore him. Stalking along with Zoffa, his shaggy companion, Norona tracks the movements of the barbarian guards, spotting their positions then calling them back to the team.

Conditions
The temperature hovers around 90 degrees fahrenheit and the humidity is oppressively high. Anyone who has been travelling outside is covered in a healthy dose of swamp muck (except for Kuikku, thanks to the enhancement on his Cyber-Knight Armor, which causes the water of the swamp (and most of the dirt mixed in with it) to slide right off).

Challenge Round One Results

With textbook skill and efficiency, the party handles everything the swamp can throw at them. The arcanely gifted in the group manage to beat back the familiar, oppressive weight of darkness through sheer force of will, while the rest of the group deftly maneuvers around the barbarian sentries they encounter.

That is, everyone but Conrad, who manages to stub his toe on a barbarian scout.

Fortunately, the party is able to silence the barbarian before he can raise an alarm, but Conrad is shaken up by the experience and gets in his own head a little bit. He suffers -2 to his next roll due to distraction.

Total successes: 8

Setting the Stage for Round Two

As the party moves ever deeper into the swamp, you notice the air around you beginning to glow a faint blue. With each passing step, the blue light becomes more apparent, until you come upon the edges of one of the largest ley lines you have ever seen! Easily a mile tall, the ley line stretches out for as far as you can see in every direction (except behind you, of course) before the vegetation of the swamp blocks your view. Even those in the party without an arcane background can feel the energy flowing along the line as sparks and small bursts of magic dance through the air and in between the plants and the trees.

As with all of the lines in the Dinosaur Swamp, this one is unstable, and you know you should tread carefully… but the barbarians and the odd tracks Norona followed all lead onward!

Round Two, Challenge One: Is It Supposed to Make That Sound?

You aren’t the only ones affected by the sight of the ley line. As you pass into the light of the line, a massive spark (more like a small explosion, really) strikes the cabin of the APC with a burst of mystical electricity! Toshiro watches as sensors go haywire, optics fail, and the engine grinds to a halt. Now stationary, the Mark IX begins to settle, sinking slowly into the mud until its tracks hit more solid ground… only the front doesn’t seem to be stopping! The rear of the vehicle begins, ever so slowly, to tilt up off the ground as the front begins to disappear into the muck of the swamp a few centimeters at a time.

Quick! You had better do something! The Team Leader must roll one of the following skills to get the vehicle back online or out of the muck: K/Computers, K/Electronics, K/Engineering, other Scientific knowledge as may be applicable, Repair, Strength (if applicable; I’m looking at you, Tyraxas); Arcane Skill (if applicable). Your team will need 3 total successes and, as before, the Team Leader’s result is modified by +1 for each success and raise her team gets. To be clear, team members may roll any skill they choose as long as it makes sense for the challenge; only the Team Leader is limited to the list above.

Because of the muck and the constant interference from the ley line energy, all rolls for this challenge must be made at -4!

Round Two, Challenge Two: Did You Guys Hear Something Go “Click”?

As the Mark IX sinks, one of you notices something else unsettling about the swamp: not all of the vegetation is lying quite correctly. Perhaps it’s a tickling at the back of Sierra’s neck, or perhaps it’s Norona’s keen eye, but you somehow come to realize that your way forward has been prepared for you, and not in any kind of good way! Trip wires, mines, and remote sensors are hidden within the vegetation and the muck, and traps may be lurking even in the tops of the trees for the unwary flyer.

Still want to save that town? Then it’s time to clear out some of the deadly devices barring your way. The Team Leader must roll one of the following skills: K/Demolitions, K/Engineering, other appropriate Knowledge skill (clear it with me first), Repair, Survival, Arcane Skill (if appropriate), or Notice. Your team will need three total successes, and Team Members may roll any cooperative skill they find appropriate (only the Team Leader is limited to the list above). Because the traps have been well hidden, all rolls made for this challenge must be done at -4!

Round Two, Challenge Three: Anyone Know a “Seymour”?

As the party approaches a particularly dense patch of vegetation, a tangle of vines unwraps itself from around a tree and begins thrashing about wildly, groping for you. From within the mess of whipping vines, a mouth opens wide, reminiscent of a venus fly trap but on a massive scale. The plant doesn’t make a sound (though its movement sure does), but despite its relative stealth and its near perfect camouflage, it is at a disadvantage: it moved too soon. You are able to spot the danger easily while you are still out of striking distance and prepare for it.

The Team Leader for this task should roll Agility, Fighting, Shooting, Throwing, Arcane Skill, or Survival. Any supporting team members may roll any skill that seems appropriate. Because of your advantage against the plants, all skills for this challenge are made at +2! You need three total successes.

By way of reminder, each character may assist on only one task, and all three tasks must be resolved simultaneously. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask before posting. Good luck!

JAREB ATTACKS THE PLANTS: (challenge 3)

Jareb swoops in with his blade of St. Cathrine shinning in hand and slices and dices. The angel’s armor is dripping with the muck of hard travel. His wings seem to glisten with moisture. One vines strikes out threatening to wrap Jareb in its tendrils but with great skill and ease the angel lifts his blade cutting the vine in twain. Softly he says still aware of their stealth mission, ” We are on the right path if the jungle sets itself against us. Worry not Norona I will see that this creature is mostly unharmed.” Gift giggles as the angelic commander bats and swats thick throny vines this way and that way until the heap is a tangled ball of knots. Toshiro's good mood at being inside the vehicle rather than out in the muck is soured as the APC clears the rise, revealing a massive ley line. It's not that Toshiro has any of the anti-magic sentiment of the coalition, but he knows that ley lines enhance the ability of psychics. That fact alone puts him on edge when around the rivers of arcane power that criss-cross the globe.

Toshiro sighs internally, and pulls out his personal jack and plugs into the APC. He reaches up and makes some adjustments on the forward sensors to compensate for the interference front the line when the magic infused lightning strikes the APC. Being jacked into the vehicle, toshiro feels the flow of energy run wild through the systems of the vehicle as the audio alarms blare wild, high pitch sirens. Luckily the arcane energy rolls to a stop as it flows up the jack and encounters the supernatural resistance to magic infused in Toshiro's body.

Toshiro flings his hands up to cover his face when the lightning strikes, and is initially overwhelmed by the claxons and contradictory displays. Then the APC lurches forward as it start today sink in the mud. A silent snarl on his face Toshiro flips a couple a switches and then turns the main power to the vehicle off.

Technology 101: turn it off and turn it back on...

Toshiro holds his breath as he reaches above (though more infront of at this point) and flips the main power back on. The diagnostic systems come back on online and show a number of short circuits and fried systems.

He first thing he tries is the horn, which thankfully still works. He lays on it a couple of times, hoping it will get the attention of crew since he can't send a message over comms. Then he grabs a few tools and gets to work on trying to return power to the drive systems. After a few minutes, and one mild electrical burn, the controls for the drive systems are back on and the wheels spin, sending swamp muck shooting out behind he vehicle.

Tyraxas' aerial scouting forces his eyes above the ground to assess the way forward and any other threats. He's not paying much attention to the Mark IX when the ley line interferes with its functioning. He does hear the magical explosion, though, and dives swiftly to find the big vehicle sinking into the muck. "This is nothing for one of my might. Get the behemoth running. I'll keep it above the swampline!"
With that, he swoops in and grabs the front end. His wings beat against the smothering humidity and his draconic muscles tense and flex, ripping the front tires from the mud. "This swamp is certainly full of surprises! It's a good thing I am with you!"

“Sorry chummer,” Conrad looked embarrassed as only a 9 foot greeny brown skinned lizard can as he clobbered the native into unconsciousness. He didn’t know if they were a threat, but they weren't taking chances.

Seeing the APC start to sink, instinctively he wanted to go and carry out repairs until Jameson almost stood in a trap

On seeing the massive plant rising up ahead, Deezy's face transformed...into one of sudden exultant joy.

"No...WAY."

She was suddenly a tangle of scrambling limbs, trying to get up out of the APC onto the roof, eschewing the armor and protection for some reason. A reason that immediately became clear as she began detaching canisters from her armor and kicking them off the top of the APC.

"I never...ever...EVER...thought I'd get another chance to use these things!" she cackled. "I mean, for something they'd actually do good at!"

The canisters split along seams and began to unfold, twisting and turning to form vaguely humanoid figures that turned their mismatched lenses onto the huge floral menace before them...and suddenly a multitude of sharp shears and scrapers and cutting implements sprang out of compartments on their bodies.

"YES! AAAAHAHAH! Klattatech Heavy Gardening Squad, get to work!" Deezy shouted, pointing at the beast.

And they did, pelting through the mud like tiny humanoid robot porcupines, rolling and running to start pruning the paste out of the plant!

Sadly, dangerous man-eating flora is common across North America. They wreaked havoc on local ecosystems by turning the bottom of the food chain, plants, into predators. While this particular variety is new to Norona the remedy is similar. Deezy's robots are able to clear a path but they will only deal with the vine, not the root of the problem - literally. Letting the small animated garden implements keep the vine busy, Norona and Zoffa trace the vine back to the stem. The dire wolf keeps the biting vines at bay, chomping them off with its mighty jaws.

Following the stem takes longer than anticipated, this plant appears to have been growing for sometime. As he hunts Norona shakes his head at the lack of local fauna, the plant has had to grow far and wide to find new sustenance. If unchecked it could collapse the ecosystem of the whole area. Finally, he locates the source and begins hacking with his vibro-sword, cutting as close to the base of them stem as possible.

The vines writhe and squirm, turning toward Norona to defined their point of origin but Deezy's robots and Zoffa's nips keep them busy. While he works, Norona repents to his Creator, "Creator, my apologies for attacking a living thing, but this is unnatural and threatens your creation."

Making the last hack he proceeds to dig up the roots. With help from everyone else he gatherings up the various vines and large root system and has Sierra light the whole thing up.

Dinosaur Swamp
Next few days
Round 0

“Ugh. Why does there have to be so much...mud!” Sierra complained, yanking her boot free and hopping on one foot as she tugged it on again. She felt her wet sock squishing inside and pulled a face. “i am so tired of this!” She flared up briefly, enough to harden the mud into a brittle clay that broke off in clumps.

Then the hairs on Sierra’s arms and neck tingled. She looked up to see everything covered in a faint blue haze. Power. Untapped potential. “Uh oh. We’re practically on top of a ley line,” she warned. “And, uh, something else!” Sierra exclaimed as a viney plant creature started to move, that burning sensation at the back of her skull warning her in time to jump clear.

Jareb jumps into the fray, whirling against the vines with his sword, Gift giggling on his back. Then someone is honking a horn loudly.

“God, I hate that sound!” Sierra said, glaring over at Toshiro, ready to just fry the damn APC for the annoyance, only then noticing the vehicle is stalled and sinking. “Oh!”

Toshiro manages to get it working again, however, and with a little help from Tyraxas manages to keep from sinking further.

Deezy scrambled out of the vehicle and released some sort of Terminator gardening implements that started to go at the vines, with Norona and his wolf helping with swords and teeth.

Sierra sees Conrad and Jameson moving through the brush, clearing out traps.

The firestarter rubs her hands together. It was nearly time for her to let off some heat anyway. “Alright! Light it up, bitch!” she said.

And then calls from her teammates come out that the danger is clear. The APC is back on solid-ish ground, the plant creatures have all been defoliated, and Conrad and Jameson toss aside the last of the traps.

Sierra deflates with a puff of smoke. “Well, isn’t that like getting a girl blue bean!” she grumbled. “Get a girl all worked up. Oh, yes, Norona. Let me clean up your lawn clippings for you.” Sierra rolled her eyes, shot off a burst of flame at the pile of slashed vegetation, and stalked back to the APC.

“Somebody better find me a god damned bath!” she shouted, grabbing a bottle of moonshine Lincoln had given her.

As the party continues through the jungle Kuikku feels something is off. When they step into the clearing and get a look at the ley line everyone pauses. I have seen several lines before but nothing like this. It is almost like we are on the edge of a huge nexus. This can make things interesting.

Just as he finishes that thought the APC is struck. Blinking away the flash effect Kuikku notices the vehicle is starting to sink. As he starts that way Tyraxas swoops down and all but lifts it out of the muck. Ok, I guess they have that under control.

Suddenly Conrad calls out that there may be some traps to deal with. Not sure how much help I will be but at least I can do something. As he gets to the area Conrad stands up from the last trap. “Got 'em all, chummer.” he states with a grin.

Shrugging and walking away Kuikku notices a plant moving ahead. Seeing Jareb fly into battle Kuikku grins. Now this I can help with. Then several strange robots run past him and shredded vegetation starts flying in every direction. Narona, and his wolf, dart to the center of the melee and start chopping at the root cluster. By the time Kuikku gets there Sierra is burning off the last of the detritus.

Realizing he has been late to everything happening Kuikku chops fitfully at a few random vines and branches. “It looks like a few were missed. I got them.” Feigning satisfaction Kuikku starts back towards the APC to pick up the trail again. And I am supposed to be the fast one in the group. <sigh>

Post by Pursuit »

Conditions
The temperature hovers around 90 degrees fahrenheit and the humidity is oppressively high. Everyone (but Kuikku) is still covered in swamp muck. There is a truly gigantic ley line nearby, but it is as unstable as every line you have found in the swamp.

Challenge Round Two Results

Thanks to quick action, supernatural might, and incredible technical aptitude, the party gets the ATV back online and out of the sinking muck with little trouble, while Conrad single-handedly manages to disarm every trap in sight, more than making up for his former misstep.

In the meanwhile, the more martial members of the group make quick work of the attacking plants. Thus far, the 32nd has advanced almost unimpeded, despite the dangers of the swamp...

Total successes:
  • Round 1: 8
  • Round 2: 14

Setting the Stage for Round Three

You continue on deeper into the swamp, and you easily follow the signs of the passing creature Norona has been tracking along the ley line. The signs of the creature’s passing have only become easier to follow, as more and more broken and trampled vegetation is left in its wake. Where the standing water lets up enough to see the muddy bottom, Norona is startled to see that the creature’s track have grown to an enormous size; easily three or four times the size of Tyraxas’ own footprints!

Just as was the case during your battle with the vampires many weeks ago, the ley line here is gigantic and you must continue to travel through it in order to advance. The sky begins to darken and twilight falls, but it is difficult to tell that from within the steady blue glow of the ley line.

The party continues on until it becomes obvious that you will not overtake your quarry that night. Fortunately, you brought plenty of gear with you thanks to the APC (along with a temperature controlled environment, which is particularly helpful for Gift), and you are able to rest.

Over the next [dice:1mgglcp5]46165:0[/dice:1mgglcp5] days, you continue to follow the strange creature’s trail, on alert for whatever you might find.

Round Three, Challenge One: This Again?

After what seems like an endless search, the ground begins to level out and become more solid, and you can all clearly see the giant footprints Norona has been following. The vegetation begins to thin a bit, and you begin to notice the odd velociraptor and barbarian here and there, all of them looking alert and wandering what to the experienced eye is obviously a perimeter.

It looks like you might be getting close, and that your way might be being watched again. Perhaps some of the stealthier party members have an answer for the sentries?

The Team Leader must roll one of the following skills: Notice, Stealth, Survival, Fighting, Shooting (with a silent weapon, such as a laser), Throwing, Driving (at -6), Piloting (at -6), or Arcane Skill (if appropriate). Anyone assisting her may roll any Skill they find appropriate. As with all of your challenges so far, you need three total successes in order to bypass the sentries without being seen, but because you have already observed the barbarians’ routines and patterns as guards, all rolls made for this challenge get a +2! What’s more, if you succeed in this challenge, the entire party will get a bonus reward on top of any other rewards earned (which I will dole out after all the challenges are completed).

Round Three, Challenge Two: Swamp Kaiju

Once you are past the sentries, you come across a most disconcerting sight: piles and piles of rotting carcasses. At first, you don’t believe what you are seeing, but the heat of the swamp mixes with the smell of rapidly decomposing meat and it becomes all too real. Most of the dead are from the local wildlife, and you see all shapes and sizes of dinosaurs, birds, snakes, and other swamp fauna represented among. Mixed in here and there, though, you see the occasional bodies of sentient beings, mostly barbarians, but one or two wearing more modern clothing or gear.

To get such a collection of the dead would have taken enormous effort, and though the bodies are already being swarmed by flocks of swamp flies, none of the corpses appears to be more than a few days old, at a glance.

Just beyond the piles of the dead, a large circle of barbarians and raptors stand swaying, the humans chanting and the dinosaurs letting out rhythmic chirps. At the head of the circle, the Raptor King Norona met earlier stands wearing the same necklaces and bracelets as before, but also a cloak of feathers across his back. On the ground before him is a mewling swamp cat with a broken leg, clearly frightened and thrashing against the ground. The cat is held in place by some unseen force, and the Raptor King gives a hissed incantation and slashes the animal’s throat with a razor-like claw, ending the animal’s suffering… or so it would seem.

From the open wound on the cat’s throat, a thick, smoke-like substance floats into the air, where it is met by a massive cloud of similar matter. It is as if someone had stolen all of the smoke from a wildfire and gathered it together in one place somehow.

Except that the smoke is constantly changing shape. One moment, it’s a set of massive jaws. The next, it’s a gigantic foreleg with claw-tipped toes, stomping down into the earth of the clearing. It constantly switches, cycling through a dozen, no, a hundred different forms faster than your eyes can track, until a pair of glowing red eyes from within the mass settles on you.

The smoke goes still and the Raptor King looks up from his kill, seeing you, and shows his teeth, whether in a snarl or a smile you cannot tell.

”Ah. The Outsider and his friends. How kind of you to bring yourselves so conveniently to our little casting circle. It saves me the trouble of going to find you.” A darkness rolls over the Raptor King’s eyes like a passing stormcloud, and then all of the raptors in the circle (at least two dozen in all) turn soundlessly as one and charge the party. The barbarians move a moment later, (perhaps three dozen of these) some of them launching arrows, some hefting mighty axes, and some firing odd-looking crossbows that seem to shoot bolts of ice instead of iron.

As the combatants rush towards you, the Raptor King points one arm at you and mutters another incantation, launching some arcane spell in your direction!

Simultaneously, the shadow coalesces into a single form: that of a gigantic T-Rex, easily three or four times Tyraxas’ size. It opens it’s jaws as if roaring, but no sound comes out, and it glares at the party through pulsing red eyes, not yet moving from the spot where it had gathered. Perhaps if you can manage to hold off the attacking barbarians and dinosaurs, you can find a way to dispel that creature?

Special for this Challenge; Please Read: This is a big one! For those familiar with the P&O Manual (which I’m using as inspiration for these challenges), I drew the SNAFU card to accompany this particular challenge, rolled to find out your target number and the dice exploded. For those who are not familiar with the P&O Manual, all you need to know is this: the target number for your first success in this challenge is a 14 (and every 4 above 14 will count as an additional success/raise)! To make things even more dangerous, whoever the Team Leader is will suffer 1d3 Wounds should you fail on this challenge, so consider carefully before you choose to have your character step into that role.

The Team Leader must roll one of the following skills: Fighting, Shooting, Throwing, K/Battle, Driving, Piloting, Survival (for setting hastily made traps), K/Demolitions (for setting hastily prepared charges), Arcane Skill, Taunt or Intimidation. If you can think of another appropriate skill not listed here and would like to be the Team Leader, just shoot me a message and we can see if it will work. Any teammates who help the leader may roll any skill that seems appropriate, and you must accumulate 3 successes on this challenge in order to clear it (meaning a cumulative result of 22).

Fair warning: I would not engage that shadow T-Rex creature in your narratives; you have plenty on your hands with the oncoming troops and magical attacks.

For Norona: Should Norona choose to lead this team, there is a special risk in it for him: he would not be able to Soak any wounds gained as a result of this challenge should the team fail (hi, Adventure Card!). On the other hand, he would get an extra Benny for taking the risk and playing up his character’s Hindrances.

Round Three, Challenge Three: Spell Slinging Barbarians!

Mixed in with the attackers rushing to meet you are a handful of barbarians who stop to chant or to fling dinosaur teeth in your direction (which, naturally, then grow to the size of short swords and embed themselves in trees, the ATV or, if you are unlucky enough, your character!). The barbarians have casters among their ranks, and all manner of arcane havoc is headed your way, unless you act quickly!

While much of the party is engaged with the onrushing warriors and prehistoric killers, some of you may want to take a moment to try and sort out the casting bad guys from the fighting bad guys, or this encounter could end quicker than you’d like!

The Team Leader must roll one of the following skills: Arcane Skill, Notice, K/Arcana (or other applicable knowledge, such as Occult), Shooting, Fighting, Throwing, Taunt, or Intimidation. Any teammates who help may roll any skill they choose, as long as it makes some kind of sense. Because they are mixed in with the other barbarians and are skilled casters in their own rights, all rolls for this challenge will be made at -2. As always, you need to accumulate 3 successes in order to advance.

Round Three, Challenge Four: Magic Is In the Air

The ley line continues to throw out a ton of interference as sparks dance and energy crackles through the air around you. There’s so much interference, in fact, that some of the team’s electronic devices are beginning to go haywire: lasers will randomly stop firing, radios will crackle with static instead of conveying crucial coordination, the APC screens will flicker at inopportune moments, etc.

One or two of your more technically capable members might want to see if they can do anything to help. Maybe they run from person to person on the battlefield performing quick field repairs on affected gear, or maybe they manage something else entirely. Either way, it sure would be easier to fight off this barbarian and raptor assault if the team’s gear would work properly.

The Team Leader must roll one of the following skills: K/Engineering, K/Electronics, K/Computers, other appropriate Knowledge skill (clear it with me first), Repair, or Arcane Skill (if appropriate). Any teammates who help may roll any skill they choose. Because you guys are operating from inside the ley line, all rolls for this challenge are made at -2 and you must accumulate 3 successes.

A Note About Procedure and Challenges

You guys have done great at the challenges so far and have accumulated 7 more successes than you needed over the past two rounds. Should you fail to complete all of the challenges above, your 7 extra successes from past challenges can make up some of the difference and still get you to your ultimate goal of helping the town.

That said, if you fail any of the individual challenges above, there may be consequences (especially for the Swamp Kaiju challenge, as mentioned in the description).

As always, let me know if you have any questions before posting, and good luck!

Challenge 1:This again? Acheved three success.
Jareb looks at the saftey of the APC and its sealed enviormental controls. Then he looks at Gift, sweaty, balmy, barely breathing. Really no place for a child, let alone a defenseless infant.
Over the coms he sends a worried messege to Conrad but it goes out to the group as well, ” Conrad, thank you again for crafting the back in which I carry my dimunitive yet precious charge. I was wondering if and how much it would cost to make the pack enviormentally sealed? I have no money but I could keep a look for credits if I knew how much we were talking about. I am worried that prolonged heat in this jungle will kill Gift.” Jareb shakes his wings flinging moisture everywhere. It will kill me too. He takes a long swing of water from his canteen and refixes Gift’s own bottle. He pats her head smitten and looks to lift his pack back on his back. It has been a long trip and his parenting duties may be taking a toll.

Movement out of the corner of eye draws his attention. His voice is but a whisper, ”We are not alone. They seek to surprise us at the deep waters of the swamp yonder. I will cut them off before they reach that position...

Jareb quickly and without drawing too much attention brings himself through the air surprising the barbarian commander. I know her... So long ago, just before I encountered the aspect of lust. I met her... Golden hair like a rising sun. Dark eyes that could see my very nature. A stern heart, and a tempered soul. How does she live? He pushes the last few vines aside drawing his wings in and quick draws hs blade thrusting it just beneath the supple chin of the barbarian commander.

He whispers close to her ear, ” Remember the Angle you took in centeries ago? I am he and have returned. How are you still here?”

Her gaze fixes Jareb, she is unflinching despite her precarious position. Her eyes are different, and face slightly off... Like a daughter or perhaps a distance relative down the line.

Her face though is proud and her blue eyes soft and muted. Her hands quickly draw her bone dagger expertly lifting Jareb’s blade away from her face. She snarls, ” I have heard those stories. My mother told them to me, as she was told them by hers and so forth. How dare you prey upon my families heritage. I Alialian daughter of Betrial must keep our lands safe. How dare you walk our swamp without our leave...” She seemed to want to say more but held back whatever secrets she could keep and lunged at Jareb. Their reparte was quick and silient. In three parries and counter thrusts he had her at his mercy. From the ground she looked up at him with wide eyes as hs wings came unfureled and he revealed his magestic form.

Instead of striking a deadly blow he reaches down a hand, ” As I said, I have returned. You may not be Quana but you have her fierceness and her looks.” She seems taken aback by his name drop. He continues further musing on how his actions long ago have come back to haunt him, ” It is clear that the sins I commited long long ago have come back 10 fold. I do not regrett any of them. I may not be your father but you are a part of me. I can sense the celestial within however diluted throught the ages.” She finally takes his hand and lifts up out of the muck.

She wipes her cheek and Jareb catches her hand. He softly says while Gift giggles, ” My comrades and I are trying to save a nearby town. You don’t have to help us but please will you let us through unfettered? After we save the town we can try to kill each other.” He grins as he says the last part and tosses her back the two bone daggers she lost.

The sight of so much wanton death causes Norona to gasp audibly. The normally stoic elf creases his forehead and furrows his brow as his mouth twists in an expression of intense pain. The sight of blessed creation tossed aside wounds his soul. Yet, the horror is not complete as the Raptor King summons cloud of death and darkness. Snapping out of his shock when the raptors and barbarians turn to attack, Norona steels himself for the coming conflict. Little did this petty king know, Norona was willing to lay down his life for the creator, he doubted such a coward would have similar resolve.

Isolating the king from his minions was the first priority, and Norona could see no better way to stop them than to use the land against them. He quickly scans the ground and sees a number of options available to him. The largest being the huge buildup of swap gas from the collecting rotting corpses and the swampy muddy ground. The ground could slow the advance, and the gas could make for a fine pyre for the dead - including the raptors and barbarians who are dead but don't yet know it.

Signalling to his team, Norona directs the course of battle.

"Veer the enemy to that patch of ground. It will slow their advance."

With little prodding Tyraxas and Sierra leap into action, corralling the enemy with gouts of fire and and massive tail sweeps. From further back Conrad and Jameson make the same realization as Norona, igniting gaseous plants adding further flame to the fires. Many of the raptors and barbarians fall under the onslaught, while many more pour into the muddy ground, getting bogged down and stuck. Helpless against the righteous onslaught onslaught of a dragon and a burster. While they direct traffic, Norona calls forth a gentle wind, wafting swamp gas and the stench of death toward the field of battle.

The cloud of gas roils over the trapped enemy like a shroud of death. Not fearing for his fire proof allies, Norona keeps a cold, calmness on his face as he whispers to Sierra.

"Ignite it."

The cloud of gas ignites in an explosion that rocks the entire swamp, flame spreads through the trees, the piles of bodies pop as trapped gasses became heated and explode catching fire in a toxic choking funeral pyre. As flame spring up all around like the day of judgement, Norona uses a blessing to protect himself from its heat and sends holy might through his vibro-sword. It glows right, with the blaring power of Archanon, the Lord of Light. Taking deliberate steps forward, Norona closes on the Raptor King.

"You are the king of corpses and darkness. You will reap what you sow, and I am here for the harvest."

Suddenly Norona rushes forward and engages the beast. Seeing this Kuikku dashes forward to offer what help he can. Dodging spears, deflecting claws, and keeping the enemy off balance takes up most of his effort so he gets few actual kills. In the end though he is able to Norona the space he needs to focus on the Raptor King.

Tyraxas eyes the ceremony. The smoke form is massive. The dragon, though, is undeterred. "Phantoms of smoke and blood magic parlor tricks do not frighten me." He glares at the raptor king. "You are a pale shadow of a wish of what it means to wear a coat of scale. You are an insult to the glory of dragon-kind, you cold-blood! If it must be combat, then I shall oblige."
Tyraxas launches into the air, spewing fire, although it seems to be as a means to corral and herd the raptors and barbarians into a cluster. The raptor king fires his spell. In an instant, Tyraxas' body goes stiff, his wings tucking in. The timing couldn't have been worse, though, for the raptor king's forces. In what is fast becoming his trademark maneuver, Tyraxas plummets to the ground. On impact, he overcomes the temporary stun and deftly uses his momentum to roll into the horde of barbarians. "You fool! You fell victim to my ruse! See now how your vanguard is broken upon my horns and bulk!" He springs to his feet and begins swinging his tail back and forth, sweeping the enemy off of their charge and battering them to unconsciousness. Well timed spouts of fire are employed to take the sting out of the barbarian ice bolts. "What atrocities you have committed against the living! I am your judgment, then, to repay in kind the harm you've inflicted!"

Toshiro was taking an off shift nap in the passenger seat when the party stumples upon the rotting pile of carcasses. The putrid smell of death insights nightmares of his past, and he startles awake, heat racing. After a frantic few seconds to get his bearings, Toshiro looks out the window just as the swaying circle of raptors and barbarians comes into view.

Toshiro is startled by a voice he is not yet used to as the miniature army charges the legionnaires.

An assault! On your person and upon your honor! Draw me and we shall avenge this slight together!

Get out of my head! Toshiro shouts - or thinks? - as he pops a hatch in the APC. The chaos of the battle is already underway, as swords and spells fly through the air, fires start to rage and fighters swarm their location. Toshiro strains all of his senses trying to keep track of the original members of the circle that summoned the shadow monster. Maybe if he can bring them down, the shadow monster can be dispelled.

As the APC sways through the battle, Toshiro tracks the casters of the enemy forces and picks them off with his laser rifle. He spots small group of 3 barbarians and a raptor swaying over a dazed barbarian clutch at his side and crying doe help. As as one leans down to slit the throat of his wounded companion, Toshiro launches a grenade right into their midst, blowing the unholy ritual to smithereens.

Switching back to the rifle mode, toshiro takes aim at another barbian about to sling enchanted dinosaur teeth at the vehicle and pulls the trigger. Sparks shoot from the eclip as the gun malfunction. Toshiro snarls silently as he ducks in the vehicle, barely dodging a flying sword. He grabs his airhorn and honks the 3 short bursts he had coordinated with the team to indicated he needed deezy's assistance.

Hopefully Deezy can get this gun working again. That shotgun won't be much use at this range.

A gun is a cowards weapon! Retribution echoes in Toshiro mind. Draw me and we shall bring justice to these savages!

Come on Deezy... Toshiro thinks, but he grabs his chip on close combat techniques and pops it in, just in case...

Round 0

Sierra sat back, enjoying the cool air conditioning of the vehicles, her coat off for maximum skin exposure as she swapped scouting duties with Jareb, taking a break from the heat of the swamp. She guzzled some water with a tequila chaser.

“Wake me when something interesting happens,” Sierra murmured, drifting off.

She didn’t know how long she’d napped. It was difficult. The ley line made her skin prickle, her powers jazzed. Suddenly the APC lurched to a stop. Sierra popped out of the truck and waved a hand in front of her face.

“Ew! That’s a lot of dead bodies. And a horrible stench! Oh, shit. And that’s a lot of barbarians and raptors! And that’s a big smoke monster!”

Sierra’s wings exploded outward, lifting her into the air. She laid down an area of intense heat that the charging mass had to go through, hoping to sap their strength, wavering their vision with the heat distortions.

Then Sierra threw up some walls of flame, hoping to herd them off to the flanks, open some space for them to fight.

And then Sierra started laying down the devastation, blasting fire at the rushing horde, her form shrouded by fire as she kept moving, flying here, darting there. She moved to the back, attacking the rear of the horde, fire spreading in the gap.

"That's an awful lot of them," Jameson gulped as she saw them running at her; they weren't vampires

"Make your shots count," Conrad began aiming with his plasma ejector. The Hill Flattener was in the APC as it wasn't easy to sneak carrying it.

"Wait, " Jameson spotted something in the undergrowth, "that plant there; it doesn't react well with extreme heat. Normally, water will keep it soaked and disperses the gases it releases. They're probably got something like it in their slings."

Conrad smiled under his helmet as the targeting software began calculating where the stuff was

"But if you burn off the water using a sudden direct blast of extreme heat, like say a bunch of plasma bolts right chummer."

As the charging forces got closer, Conrad lay down a barrage of plasma blasts kicking up the gas into the unprotected faces of the enemy.

Conditions
The temperature hovers around 90 degrees, and mud and muck are everywhere. The humidity is oppressive, and (as always seems to be the case for 32nd), the temperature is only rising as the vegetation around the team begins to catch on fire! Fortunately, all the muck and humidity have kept the flames from spreading too quickly, but flames are certainly licking through the undergrowth and the trees are beginning to catch. It’s no impediment to your actions yet, as most of the flame is concentrated amongst and around the bad guys, but it will surely spread, given time. The ley line is as unstable as always, and any attempts to draw PPE from it are made at -2.

Round 3 Results
Faced with challenges on multiple fronts, the SET handles itself admirably, and even makes a friend in the process: the barbarian warrior Alialian, who is taken aback by Jareb’s offer and kindness. Unfortunately, before she has a chance to make a true response, the situation deteriorates (see below) and she moves for cover. Should you all survive what comes next, though, you will find her to be a friendly ear and a willing ally.

Reward: You may add Alialian, the barbarian fighter, to your character sheets as a contact. She will not assist you in this battle with her direct kin and tribesmen, but she could be of great use to you in other situations down the line.

Meanwhile, Toshiro manages to fell enough enemy casters to keep the rest of the team on their feet, while Deezy keeps your tech in working order.

(Also, as a minor retcon to Toshiro’s post, the enemies would not sacrifice their own to the summoned.)

The rest of the team does what the 32nd does best, turning aside superior numbers with, shall we say, fiery efficiency. As Norona’s vengence burns through the beasts and barbarians on the backs of Sierra, Tyraxas, and Conrad’s fire, Kra’lar the Raptor King takes a step back, eyes wide.

“Not possible!” Kra’lar growls, frustration and fear bleeding into his voice. He makes a gesture with one clawed hand and you all feel a buildup of pressure and then a sort of “pop!”, just like your ears might do on a modern day airplane.

The Raptor King must have released the creature from an unseen summoning circle of some kind. While in such a circle, the beast would have been unable to move against you but would also have been able to draw directly on the power that summoned it. Considering the mix of death magic and a ley line in the air, such a combination would have made it nigh unkillable while in its circle. Fortunately, the circle is gone and the beast is vulnerable.

With the change in pressure, you are now all able to hear the shadow beast, and it roars again, an ear splitting challenge. It looks at Tyraxas and shifts again, this time into a massive dragon! It’s features are different from those of Tyraxas - it has frills where Tyr has massive spikes - but it is otherwise unmistakably a dragon.

Its eyes still on Tyr, it says, “It has been some time since I’ve taken this form, little one. I had forgotten how much I liked it! Perhaps I shall add you to my collection and see how your body fits, hm?”

Results: all challenges completed. Total successes: 34 of 27 required. Everyone gets an extra Benny, and there will be more rewards coming after this fight, so stay alive!

The Battle is Joined!

We are switching gears to tactical combat! Thanks to the party’s overwhelming success against long odds during the challenge phase, you will get a surprise round against your enemies; they weren’t expecting you to survive. They will not get action cards this round, so you get one free round to start the combat!

You all begin on hold and may post in any order that you like. We are using theater of the mind, so feel free to have your character start at any distance to your foes as seems reasonable. No one is currently engaged in melee (for purposes of figuring out movement without incurring free attacks by foes).

Since we aren’t tracking movement on a map, keep in mind for your narratives that the ground is full of muck (or fire, in some places) and that your characters’ movements would be slowed (except for Kuikku, who can run wild).

The enemies on the field are as follows:
  • Giant smoke dragon (wild card): Size +12 (everyone gets +4 to attacks against this beasty); Toughness 58(30) MDC; Parry 6
  • Raptor King (wild card): Size +1; Toughness 14(5); Parry 7
  • [dice:24bs0bhu]46579:0[/dice:24bs0bhu] raptors (extras): Size +1; Toughness 11(2); Parry 7
  • [dice:24bs0bhu]46579:1[/dice:24bs0bhu] Eco-Wizards (barbarian casters) (extras): Toughness 12(7); Parry 5
  • [dice:24bs0bhu]46579:2[/dice:24bs0bhu] barbarian warriors (extras): Toughness 12(5); Parry 6
If you want to use an area of effect attack against bad guys, you may roll to see how many extras you catch in your attack (neither of the wild cards are bunched up). SBT is 1d3 foes, MBT or cone is 2d4 foes, and LBT is 2d6 foes.

As always, ask any questions you may have before posting, and good luck!

Re: 9. Lure of the Wilderness

Post by Deezy Klatta »

A shadow falls over the APC, and Deezy presses her face up against the little tiny armored window to properly see it...but it's so huge it looks just like a big black wall. She nearly falls over herself then getting the safety harness unstrapped and scrambling back to the hatch on the top of the vehicle to get out where she can have a proper view.

And what a view it is. Like one of the old skyscrapers of Chi-Town, only as they must have been before the devastation of the rifts...and it was alive.

It was time. Deezy didn't know if it was ready yet, but there wasn't going to be a second chance.

She socked the shoulder stock on the Omniblaster down onto the top of the APC and thumbed a little green button. A recessed panel opened, revealing a yellow switch, which she flipped. That made a small box extrude from the side of the stock. One side of the box irised open, revealing a really big red button. She jammed it with a finger, and little lights started blinking on and off all around it.

Deezy pressed the button again, and there was a CLANK as the stock clamped onto the top of the APC with magnetic vanes that popped out of it. She hung onto the weapon as it whirred and reconfigured itself. The barrel broke into eight long strips of metal that drew apart while still retaining a 'barrel like' shape. More metal strips emerged from inside the weapon, completing the new, much WIDER barrel. Meanwhile a set of weird antennae-looking things began emerging from the body of the Omniblaster, along with a pair of things that looked like lawn darts attached to wires. Deezy took each lawn dart and tossed it over the side of the APC where it anchored itself into the earth near its rearmost tire.

The barrel, almost wide enough for Deezy to crawl into now, began rotating clockwise. Little bolts of lightning crawled between the delicate-looking metal fronds of the antennae clusters. Deep within the barrel, something that looked a little like a turbofan started rotating as well, counter-clockwise. The whole thing emitted a sound like a jet engine starting to get up to speed.

Deezy lowered her goggles over her eyes and transmitted over the team's comms.

"Uh. You guys are going to want to look...not at me. For a while. Also maybe get down? I'm not entirely sure what the effects of this will be at ground zero."

The Omniblaster now looked more like a large, ornate mortar than a man-portable weapon; anchored at its base, suspended at its midsection by a sturdy bipod that had unfolded from recessed housings. With her tongue half poked out in concentration, Deezy gently tugged the weapon over a little, keeping it aimed at the target far, far above. Power sparked in cyan and crimson jags between the antennae as it gathered energy from the ley line.

Good thing there was a line here, she reflected. This woulda been SUPER awkward otherwise.

"This is gonna be so cool if it doesn't kill us all,"
the inventor declares...and then pushed the big red light-encircled button again.

Energy did not emerge from the massive, spinning barrel of the Omniblaster. It blossomed. A sphere took shape, scintillating, blinding, and growing. The glow of the ley line flared, and then bent towards the weapon, causing strange distortions in the air. Then the bulb rocketed outward in a straight line, a bolt of lightning jacketed in a sheathe of plasma that atomized the air and ripped the atoms to particles and fried the particles to a mass of quarks. Trails of white randomly cascaded from the beam and continued crisscrossing the air in its wake.

The ley line...dimmed slightly, and a wind tugged towards the Omniblaster as its antennae lit up with crazily spiraling, zag-zigging curtains of light like the aurora borealis caged.

The world became a place of black and white. White where the light of that awful beam touched. Black where it was shadowed.

It struck the monster directly on its chest, and the monster roared. And survived.

Deezy gritted her teeth and began making adjustments on the Omniblaster. The beam of destructive energy was sustained, though the recoil was starting to lift the barrel, and the magnetic clamps were scraping ever so slightly from the titanic impulse of the blast.

"It's not enough!" she shouted...not really intending the words to be heard, but the roar of air rushing outwards from the path of destruction forced her to. "It's not getting enough from the line!"

Worse, Deezy realized, the barrel was starting to glow brighter and brighter. If she didn't shut the beam off soon, it would melt the barrel down, and wreck the Omniblaster entirely! Meanwhile, the shadow beast roared again, and emitted utter blackness in a kind of shell...the energy of the beam cascaded over it, but couldn't quite crack through...

And then another hand landed on the shuddering frame of the Omniblaster. Jareb's silhouette, cast against the blinding glare of the beam, loomed over Deezy where she crouched on the roof of the APC.

"The line is not the only source of power here," the angel said...and his hand lit up with another kind of light entirely. That spiraled out from his hand and was caught in the intake antennae, joining the power of the ley line.

The beam of energy piercing the universe from the aperture of the Omniblaster turned from blue-white to pure white just as the beam, steadily tracking upwards, caught the mighty shadow dragon's head.

The world turned white. For a moment, who knew how long, there was no shadow. Only illumination.

In that flash the Omniblaster's beam punched through the dragon's head, plowing through its defenses, through its substance, leaving only a hole behind.

Then it was over. The light was replaced by daylight that seemed pathetically dim in comparison. The Omniblaster was, to Deezy's relief, not now a puddle of slag pooling atop the APC, but was beeping in warning and flashing red lights. The barrel, now slowing, was glowing a bright yellow that shaded to cherry red towards the near end.

The towering shadow dragon towered still...only missing most of its head. For a dizzying, heartstopping moment, it started to reach down with talons the size of the APC...

...and then it stopped. The shadows making up what was left of its head started dissolving and drifting away like clouds of black smoke. The dissolution spread swiftly once begun, snaking cracks like fingers of light down its neck. Chunks of shadow broke off and drifted away, dissipating as they went. The beast seemed to shatter into those clouds.

There was one 'cloud' however that didn't go quietly into that good, er, day. It clung stubbornly to itself, a twisting knot of darkness that resisted whatever the weapon had done. A fraction of its former size, and lacking form entirely, it scudded swiftly away, up the ley line, and was gone.

Awestruck, Deezy looked over at Jareb. She was as pink as a boiled lobster on every skin surface that had been facing the weapon...white where she'd been shaded by clothes, sunburned red everywhere else.

With a cough, the Omniblaster finished cycling down.

"...that's a result?" she offered in a small voice.

Post by Kuikku »

With the thinning of the rest of the beasts and barbarians Kuikku finally works his way next to Narona to face the Raptor King. ”So you think this is the purpose of this land? For you to kill whatever you need to in order to summon this corruption? And you question the wisdom of the genius loci's trust in us? I can tell you why it does so. It is the same as the purpose we are here. To stop you and put an end to this abomination.” The last is said with a vague wave towards the shadow beast.

As he finishes saying this Deezy shouts her warning. In not much longer than it takes to realize she is up to something Kuikku sees his shadow become much more distinct. Knowing better than looking to see what is going on instead he watches his shadow in an attempt to determine how much trouble the party is in. When the shadows start to fade, resulting from even more light, he decides it is time to close his eyes and hope for the best.

The shadow beast's roar suddenly cuts off, and the light no longer penetrates his closed eyes, so Kuikku looks up. Watching in amazement as the individual shadows start to separate and dissipate he starts to smile. Looking back down to the raptor king the smile transforms into a chuckle. ”See. And now it is your turn.” Glancing over to Narona Kuikku nods. ”I've got this. We are going to handle this leader to leader. Go help the others.”

He then steps forward and summons his sword. ”The power of righteousness and purity gives me strength and protects my efforts.” Then he swings a mighty blow. Though taken somewhat by surprise the raptor king is able to react in time to bend with the swing. Even with that though he is left with a cut running from one arm towards the opposite hip. "If you were to surrender we might be able to remove the corruption from your heart. If you don't I will have to remove your heart instead."

Conrad

"Holy frak," Conrad exclaims as Deezy oneshots the big creature.

He pivots his plasma ejector and fires on nearest eco-wizard as the remaining forces turn on them.

"mage can't cast if he's on fire." the blast overwhelms the eco-wizard.

Toshiro swears as his ears pop and the gargantuan shadow beast speaks. Dirt, dust and muck flies as the creature merely shifts its weight. Unconciously, Toshiro reaches to his back and unlatches his newflound blade's sheath.

Yes, let us smite this creature from the abyss together! Toshiro hears echo in his mind.

Against his better judgment, but unwilling to forgo any advantage against such odds, Toshiro draws the Supertech weapon.

FREEDOM AT LAST!! No one will stand against our swifts vengeance. Onward to glory! Just then, Deezy's omniblaster fires, searing the battlefield with a blinding light. As the light fades, it is clear the shadowy beast as been destroyed.

What...what just happened? Retribution says, battling between frustration and confusion as it filters through Toshiro's perceptions. As quickly as Toshiro put's two and two together, that Deezy somehow felled the beast with a single shot from some crazy device, the sword reads the conclusion as it passes through Toshiro's thoughts.

Damned woman! She has ruined our opportunity for glory and honor. How dare she! We must challenge her to single combat to the death for us a slight!

This thing is insane... Toshiro thinks. Luckily, it doesn't seem to exert any influence over him other than the insane, and annoying, ramblings in is head.

Embolded by his new martial skills chip and the skillful - if insane - AI in his sword, Toshiro runs headlong towards the Raptor King. As arrows fly toward him from the few remaining barbarians, Toshiro mentally notes that while the sword seems to guide his hand in deflecting or pulling him away from arrows fashioned from metal salvage, the sword seems completely unaware of the stone tipped ones. Sparks fly as a stone tipped arrow glances off of Toshiro's right shoulder blades.

Not that stone arrows have much chance against armor plating. Toshiro thinks.

Not surprisingly, the fleet footed cybernight reaches the Kra'lar before Toshiro. Already locked in combat, Toshiro circles around, helping their leader push the Raptor King up against a large boulder, giving him no avenue of escape. Toshiro feints from right drawing a parry from the raptor Kings deadly claws. Recognizing the move from their previous training when Jareb and Toshiro ganged up on him, Kuikku swings low, forcing the Raptor King to jump into the air. Using the momentum from the impact of the parry, Toshiro spins and slices across the Kra'lar's chest scoring a gash that draws a steady stream of dark red blood. Though successful, Kra'lars raptor anatomy allows him to dodge enough of the blow to avoid a fatal end.

Tyraxas bellows out a retort. "You are unworthy to bear the horns of my race, and you'll find the son of Blackwell no easy prey." He puffs out his chest as he takes in a massive quantity of air. In a blast of raging flame, he roars at the now-draconic form. "HAVE AT YOU, FOUL BEAST!" His signature combat roll turns into a forward lunge - that stops short as the world goes white with Deezy's light blast. He blinks, looks around, and finds his intended target has lost its head, quite literally.
"So worried you were about the might of Tyraxas that you underestimated the awesome power of Klattatech! I'm sure you would regret that if you were given another chance. But alas, that chance is not today." The dragon's belly laugh is one of the more frightening things the raptors and barbarians might hear today. Undeterred, they charge forward to do their worst. Tyraxas meets them halfway, a short sprint followed by a flap of his wings and a 360 degree spin that sweeps half a dozen of the hapless enemies before him.
He lands again and turns to the raptor king. "The parlor magic you wield is no match for even one of us. You cannot hope to stand against us all. Surrender and face your judgment!"

Sierra’s eyes widened as the shadow monster turned into a humongous dragon! “Holy shit…”

And then the world went white. Sierra blinked away spots and the shadow dragon was...gone.

“What the hell did you do, Deez?” Sierra gaped as the ley line calmed.

She looked around once she could see again. Kuikku, Toshiro, and Norona had taken care of the Raptor King. Tyraxas stood in a pile of what remained of the barbarian bodies. Conrad blew exhaust from the end of his gun.

“Huh. It’s like you don’t even need me,” Sierra pouted, landing amongst the burning foliage. She stretched out her hands and the flames coalesced, flowing up her arms and absorbing into her skin.

Awestruck as his companions take down the mysterious shadow dragon and put the raptor king on his heels Norona considers offering the so-called "king" one last chance to repent. Yet, seeing the beast through his goggles, the woodsman realizes the beast has sunk too far into darkness. With great sorrow Norona appeals to the heavens for justice.

"You have brought misery and darkness upon the lands. You do a disservice to all creation and the creator bids you stop. By my hand, her will be done."

Shining with ethereal light Norona transforms into an angelic being, clad in white silver, a shield and sword shimmering with holy power.

Jareb smiles at Deezy. His wings charred slightly by the brilliance of her blast. He comments on her feat, ” Not even the seven suns hold power such as that.”. Gift coos slightly sucking on a lion like pacifier. He glances warily at the others in their company taking note of fallen enemies. ” Be ready to fire again. Shadow creeps when you least expect it.” He seems does not seem surprised by the groups quick dispatching of their foes. Well trained by the legion’s finest no doubt. Whatever darkness that lies at the heart of this swamp and that plagues the village so will find itself near its end.

As the raptor king falls to death Norona returns to his natural form with a look of profound sadness on his face. His life of darkness has ended. Does he deserve the gift of life?

All deserve life. Otherwise, why would the creator have made them?

"In death he is given over to darkness. Perhaps now he is willing to live in the light."

Sighing deeply while the others deal with any remaining foes, Norona begins to appeal to the Ascended for assistance.

Speaking to the group Norona asks their indulgence, "I require time to appeal for his soul. Will you allow me a few hours?"

If the group agrees, Norona begins in haste Laying hands on the fallen enemy Norona infuses his body with mystic energy and begins a long ritual. Burying the raptor king in a shallow hole of dirt Norona draws immense magical power from the ley line and stands over the grave of his fallen enemy. Over the course of hours, he infuses the dirt with magical energy while interceding at the makeshift tomb.

"In the beginning all were drawn from Mother Earth, and in the end to her we return. Yet, like the first creation, all can be made anew with the mothers help. Her judgement is final. If he does not return, then his death is permanent."

As the hours wax and wane, Norona receives a vision. It is not the answer he expected but it makes sense and weighs heavily upon him. Returning to the group he looks about, "He will not return. Judgement has been passed and the damage from his dark acts remains. It is a great sadness."
Resurrection 3, fail. Raptor king is dead and so is caster.

Jareb looks at Norona and frowns. Will not return or failed to return? The subtle distinction may hold your life in the balance my friend. The angelic being shakes the mosture from his wings with a flurry much like a dog might shed water in its coat. Gift giggles as the water goes flying. He smiles at the babies noise and prepares a diaper for its duty. He abcently assess the situation while doing his obligation. He looks to the others, ” So what is next? What will this jungle throw at us? Are we any closer to discovering the why or how the village is suffering?”

Conrad checks around the bodies for survivors and if there are any prisoners. he gives his assent to Norona attempting his magic, though it sounded potentially dangerous. Norona knows what he is doing, but I wonder why the Raptors didn't attack before when we faced those demons.

Jameson checks her rifle; everything had happened so quickly at the end that she hadn't even had chance to open fire before. Her comrades had been very effective and she felt superfluous
Jareb wrote: Mon Dec 10, 2018 9:06 pm So what is next? What will this jungle throw at us? Are we any closer to discovering the why or how the village is suffering?”
"Well, the leyline is looking more normal," Jameson responds, feeling very trepidatious around Jareb. She found him attractive, but also unnerving, "that's certainly something."

"Norona Chummer, if they were the cause of the disease, will it just go or will we need to patch up the folks back at the town still?"
Conrad calls out, as he discreetly checks on Deezy. That was a hefty bit of magic and that sort of thing can take its toll.

"If he will not return perhaps it is for the best. We do not know if he was corrupted or the source of the corruption. Granted, the line stopped acting up when the shadow creature was killed but the raptor did not stand down either." Looking around at the piles of bodies Kuikku shudders. "As much as I don't want to we may need to dig through these piles to see if there is anything important. I would rather let Sierra loose on them but she could damage what may be found." Turning to Sierra he asks, "Unless you think you can take them all down one layer at a time. It may smell worse but it would reduce the chances of one of us catching... something."

A deep sadness spreads across the elf's face as he ponders how to respond to Conrad's question. Finally, he tries to explain the situation in terms of physiology, " The raptor king was using the life energy of the swamp itself to fuel dark magic. Much like drawing blood from a victim. His death stops the bleeding, but the damage is not undone. Without a transfusion of mystical energy the swap will continue to slowly die, the disease is part of that slow death. It will visit the towns people again unless the land itself I'd restored to health."

Norona goes quiet as he considers what is required to save this vast ecosystem. It is not my homeworld, but the spirit of the Ascended runs deep in this place. Perhaps I am being called to the Celestial Halls.

Deezy manages to get shakily to her feet and with kitten-like trepidation touches the Omniblaster, then jumps back. Then goes over and touches it again. Relieved that it's warm, but no longer searing hot, she returns it to its normal, man-portable configuration.

"If it's life energy, it'll heal over time," she points out in response to Norona. "Now that nothing's messing with it anymore. How fast it heals depends on how much was taken, I guess...and how healthy the life around here was to start with. I dunno there's much we can do about that. Not like we can give it a...swamp transfusion or something..."

The inventor trailed off at that thoughtfully. "Hmm. Swamp transfusion."

Tyraxas puzzles a moment. "What measure of counteractive mystic power must be injected into the area? Is that something we can undertake ourselves? My own arcane might is not limitless, but it is certainly greater than the raptor king." He fixes on Deezy. "Considering the display we all just witnessed, perhaps Deezy may fabricate a device by which we can amplify our own mystic reserves as we release it into the jungle? Or perhaps we must find a focus point from which to conduct such an undertaking."
The dragon looks at Norona, his eyes narrowing. He seems changed by his efforts. He takes the life force of the swamp very much unto himself.

Re: 9. Lure of the Wilderness

Post by Toshiro 'Cybermonk' »

Toshiro sheathes Retribution, despite its many objections and calls for justice. He starts the ugly process of clearing the area of bodies with a practiced, if grim efficiency. He moves to add the Raptor King to the pile of bodies to be burned, but is stopped by Norona. He shrugs at Norona's suggestion of reviving the Raptor King. They've killed dozens of other raptors and barbarians over the course of the battle. Why should their leader be worthy of resurrection and not them? Why resurrect an enemy at all?

"O well... If he comes back with unrepentant evil then we will put him down again" Toshiro thinks

"And the Elf, for causing such inconvenience!" Retribution adds.

Umm....No.

The talk of reviving the swamp through mystical transfusions and grim sacrifices of life - at least voluntary this time - goes a few miles over Toshiro's head. He trusts the team will work it out, and tell him what he needs to do.

What does concern him though is the small shadow that had disconnected itself from the after Deezy's weapon hits home. It may have escaped the attention of the others, but Toshiro's sensor had picked it up and he had caught a glimpse of its escape. As soon as the opportunity presents itself, Toshiro replays the recorded scene from the monster's apparent demise for the group. He pauses it in a frame that shows the shadow escaping, and points it out.

Kuikku listens to the various comments about trying to heal the swamp. He then watches the footage Toshiro plays and shakes his head. "With that thing still out there this will not be easy. Like a wound that heals over a piece of shrapnel. In time it will cause its own problems. Sometimes it can even cause a serious infection that requires it to be cut out. Even if we heal the damage done there may be more, possibly worse, issues in the future. And who knows, maybe killing that thing will jump start the healing process."

Kuikku then looks into the distance. "Maybe following that thing will lead us to a nexus and whatever we do to start healing the swamp will spread faster that way."

Tyraxas snorts in disgust. "An aspect of darkness would take the cowardly route and flee from its BETTERS!" He shouts the last part into the jungle, as if to taunt a phantom into revealing itself. When the shade doesn't return for combat, he sighs, and a plume of smoke rises from his nostrils. "How would we track such a phantom, other than following the ley line?"

Dinosaur Swamp
Night
Round 0

Sierra shook her head at Kuikku’s question. “That’s a lot of control you’re asking for,” she said. “But I can try.”

Sierra helped stack the dead bodies and then lit them in a great funeral pyre. With little else to do as they waited for Norona to do his voodoo mojo, she broke out a bottle of tequila.

“We might as well celebrate,” she told the others, offering the bottle around. She rolled a joint, too, sitting on the hood of Conrad’s vehicle as she smoke, drank, and chilled out, feeling really mellow. She invited Jameson to join her. Neither one of them had done much in this battle.

When Norona returned, he looked down. And a bit...pale? Wan? Was that a word?

“What’s wrong, elfie? It was just a crazy demon dinosaur. I wouldn’t get too heartbroken.”

Sierra watched the footage Toshiro showed. “Great. I’ve heard the stories. Round two won’t be for a couple hundred years and will require short guys with hairy feet, or teenage boys with lightning scars. Not our problem. Why can’t we take the win?” she whined. This was seriously killing her buzz. “Seriously, Norono, you look like you need this more than me.” She handed him what was left of her joint.

"I'm pretty sure we could practically kill ourselves transferring life into the swamp, and it'd barely make a dent," Deezy posits. "The scale's pretty massive! Might be we just have to try to...uh, you know...mitigate the side effects until the ecosystem starts to heal on its own? I dunno okay?! I'm not exactly an expert on...squishy...life stuff. If this was a MECHASWAMP, then I'd be your..."

She drifts away again. "Mecha swamp. Oh wow. That'd be amazing."

Seeing the video of the escapee from her conflagration brings her back though.

"Ugh, of course that happened. Um, okay. Might be able to track it...lemme see if its thaumaturgicalogical aura's still llingering. Which it SHOULD BE because DAMN that thing was huge!"

Deezy takes her helmet off, and wiggles her goggles down over her eyes to peer around.

The swamp's terminal illness weighs heavily on Norona and the escaped essence of the shadow dragon only increases the heaviness of his heart.

"Deezy is correct. A massive outpouring of life essence is needed. Not mystic power from the ley lines but a true living essence. That also means a willing donor. For now, let us clear up our loose ends and follow the shadow spark."

Conditions

The party begins at the site of the battle, where Sierra is burning away the remnants of the dead. The ley line has stabilized, as has the temperature (still around 90 degrees fahrenheit).

Aftermath

Viewing the site through her mystic goggles, Deezy can see the traces of… something left behind by the shadow creature, the magic of the ley line mixed with something dark and necromatic. She also can clearly see images of hundreds of different creatures drifting along the ley line in the direction the piece of the shadow beast fled, each of which is slowly dissipating from view.

It’s hard to take in all of the energies whirling around her, but Deezy can tell with a certainty that whatever the shadow beast is, it is both foreign to this world and also somehow tethered to this reality. The Raptor King must have used up the life energy Norona mentioned as part of the summoning to bring the shadow beast here, but for what purpose?

She can also tell that the creature they saw is only a fraction of the essence of the true being.
More Info for Deezy
Deezy can also tell that the magic used to conjure the creature was divine in nature (AB Miracles), but not from any good diety, clearly.
Now What?

The party follows the remnants of the shadow beast along the ley line for a time, but eventually all traces of its passing dissipate and you find yourself simply in the swamp and traveling along the massive ley line. It started out going somewhat parallel to the course you would have taken to get back to Avanzada Seca, but has now turned away from the outpost entirely. You can choose to keep following the line, or you can head back to town.

For those who head back, you find the town more or less as you left it. The wildlife around the town has not returned, and Norona can feel the sickness of the land beneath his feet. He can also feel a faint and familiar pulsing power, and he knows the eyes of the genius loci are on him once again.

Interludes and Rewards

Go ahead and write up another interlude on a topic of your choosing. It can be about how your characters deals with the aftermath of the battle, the journey back to town, his/her internal turmoil, or it can be one of the classics (desire, love, etc.)

Also, as a reward for succeeding in the challenges, you may take either (i) a roll on the Hero’s Journey table of your choice, or (ii) a free Advance of your choice that does not count toward your total number of Advances per rank. @Norona: this differs a little from what I told you in Hangouts, so feel free to adjust your new character’s sheet if you want.

Jareb kicks the swamp water in disgust. He really did not like letting something that dark go free without half a chance to chase it and kill it. Again, the darkness of the world spreads due to in some part my lack of conviction.” His face is fraught with his own anguish when he looks at his companions, I know we are here to help the swamp, but I cannot trade one darkness for another. Is there no way for us follow the essence further?
He unfurals his wings prepared to keep the chase ailiave least some terrible darkness be unleashed without trying... ” I will return and meet you at the village when I have exhausted all means of finding this darkness escaping.”

A slight but firm hand hold his shoulder, it is Alialian the barbarian fighter. He bronzed skin and black hair glistened in the last light of the swamp. ” I will go with you Angel least you find yourself lost on this fool hardy quest.”

Jareb nods smiling at her. He takes to the air calling, ” You can only guide me back if you can keep up Princess.” Gift giggles.

HJ roll experience and wisdom: [dice:12ib87v7]47034:0[/dice:12ib87v7]

It was a journey through unimaginable barbarism. The ancient malice that lay deep in the swamp waters sided with the new darkness hiding it: allying with its like kind. Darkness begats darkness... The way was shut and no matter how hard the celestial general fought it was unyielding. For every thrust into locating where it went the swamp reared its head executing the perfect counter.

Alialian crouched behind a thick set of low hanging swamp vines. Her hand was twisted at an unnatural angle but she bit her lip stifling her painful cry. He black hair was wild and singed. Her eyes held a glimmer of worry. Had the two over extended themselves in this mad pursuit for an unnamed evil wisp of smoke?

The swamp belched and a shadow hand of old saturated evil strode forth from the trees, water, and vines. It swirled arround and gripped her by the throat cutting off her gurgled scream. ” Where is my father? He will not find what he seeks. I am he and he is me. For all his machinations he is pridictable and without the fury to see his will done... We are different in that regard. Barbarian, I ask again where is he?”

Jareb sliced through the trees with his baby charge strapped to his back. His shinning sword of St. Cathrine ablaze in holy light. Jareb’s eyes smoldered as his rage was unleashed. ” I am right behind you junior!” Something snapped inside the Angel as his measured holy fury was broken and unbound. His rage took over and with little regard for anything else he cut, slashed, and smote the shadowy arm of his unnatural spawn.

The shadowed darkness disapated and reformed laughing at the Angel’s wild swings. “There it is father. Feel that darkness inside welling up! Feel the harsh beating wrath! That’s me!”

In a blink its over, the ancient darkness is gone. Jareb wildly catches sight in a pool of water the reflection of Gift... The baby is scared quiet unsure who she is traveling with for the fist time. Even Jareb is unsure who is looking back at him. Ailailian grabs him with her good hand shaking him out of the last of his beserk fury. ” Jareb its gone! We have lost the darkness only to confront another one more powerful. What did it mean by calling you father?”

Jareb shook his head. What overcame me? He softly says, ” I made mistakes long ago. This swamp was one, least we make another lets hurry back to the others.” With no sign of the fleeting darkness the two wordlessly turn back.

Dinosaur Swamp
Night
Round 0

Sierra lounged back in the truck as they returned to town. She’d put out her joint, the others not liking the smoke stinking up the interior, but she was being pretty liberal with the moonshine.

What was she doing out here? She was a city girl. She could barely find a safe place to pee out in the woods, much less track some weird shadow evil thing. And to date she’d been pretty useless to the team. Vampires apparently don’t like to burn. And Deezy’s big super gun and Kuikku’s blades had pretty much taken out every threat in that last fight, leaving Sierra to pick her nose and clean up the mess.

Yay! Glorified janitor!

When they reached town, Sierra headed to Lincoln’s. Maybe a good fuck would take her mind off things. She opened the door. No one seemed to be home. She did, however, find some panties and a bra draped over the bed. They weren’t hers.

“Nevermind,” Sierra muttered. She grabbed another jug of moonshine and closed the door behind her.

Why should that even bother her? It wasn’t like her and Lincoln were...anything. She’d only met him this week. “Fucking boys,” she muttered, wandering off out of the village into the jungle again.

Sierra stopped. She scented the wind. Something...tingled. Well, this was new. It was kind of like that thing that warned her of trouble, but...not. It was coming from up ahead to the left. Sierra pushed through the brush and came upon an opening in the trees. The place had been burnt out. It still smoked slightly, but it was long since cold.

Sierra crouched down, that odd sense triggering again. She picked up some of the ash, cupping it in her hand, feeling the texture, the residual heat, letting it trail through her fingers, catching in the slight breeze. Her eyes flashed with flames, and she imagined the area as it had burned, watching. It had been hot. Hotter than a normal fire should have been. She saw an unconscious figure lying in the midst of the flames. He looked familiar. It looked like…

“Lincoln!” Sierra gasped.

Another figure wavered in the flames. Literally. Standing in the flames over Lincoln’s body. He wore beige safari clothing, suitable for traversing the jungle, with the kind of Indiana Jones hat, hands in his pockets. His hair was red, with red streaks in it, his eyes a brilliant green, though sparking with flames, handsome and dangerous at the same time.

She had seen him before. In her mother’s apartment. No, in the jungle clearing. In the vision.

“You!”

He just looked at her, gave her that devilish smile, and then evaporated into the flames.

Sierra blinked, gasping for breath. The trees around her were burning, flames licked through her hair. She quickly snuffed out the fires and looked over the patch of burned ground again. She moved to the center, dusting through the ash there. She found traces of long bone buried in the ash.

“No...oh, fuck.” Sierra raced for a nearby tree and vomited. “Oh...oh, fuck, no…” Sierra spat. “Lincoln?”

Lockpicking, and Stealth as he chooses.

Conrad was tinkering with something in the back as they returned.
Their mission had been a success, though there were some loose ends, so why did it feel like a loss? Something was hanging over Conrad's head, leaving him feeling subdued. They had been big damn heroes

He remembered a conversation he had just before that frakking commando mission to the prison

"Do you know why I picked you as part of my team Conrad?" Colonel Winter asked him as he collected his gear.
"My winning smile Chummer?"

"No no," the colonel laughed, "I selected you because you are a hero. That incident with the vampires made it obvious. Do you know what the definition of a hero is?"

"I'm sure you'll enlighten me chummer?" Conrad sounded suspicious, for that sort of comment usually sounded like the beginning of a character assassination

"Someone who gets people killed!"

"Well, ain't you a happy soul."
The Colonel laughed, "Don't get me wrong, heroes are what we need, but only if you are willing to go the route of doing what is actually needed and not trying to be the hero from one of those old vids." He fixed Conrad with a stare, "how far are you feeling you are willing to go to rescue the people at that camp?"

Conrad knew he was going to try and save the people at that camp
"Willing to die to get them all out and do stuff I would not normally do."

"That's what I'm looking for!"

few schools left in the world, or she might even have found and lived in an ancient
library. However managed, she has five additional skill points to spend at character
creation, but they may only be spent on Healing, Investigation, and Knowledge skills.
Jameson sat with Sierra, partaking of some of her alcohol whilst also periodically looking at Jareb. Here was an honest to god Angel and she was intimidated. Considering how she envisioned Angels, this one was not what she expected.

"We shouldn't be in here," her friend implored her, "if the Deadboys found out about this place..."

"They are not going to find this place, as long as we keep it quiet and don't give them reason to suspect." Jameson looked around and grabbed a few books off a shelf, blowing the dust from them.

"What's this one with all the pretty painted pictures?"

"I recognise this passage, it's what the Pastor was reading the other day, but..." she stopped to read it, "if you read the next bit, it makes it a completely different message from what they were telling us."

Her friend's eyes bulged at that "oh, we are so getting to get killed being in here."

"then I intend to read everything in here. be damned if I let them destroy everything."

As the party walks along the line Kuikku focuses his mind on trying to track the entity. He can sense, sort of, the residue of its passage. Allowing the non-magic to keep him from walking into a tree he turns all his attention inside. He opens his mind to the residue in an attempt to get a better fix on it. At the same time the power of the line washes over his consciousness, and his sub-conscious. His mind fills and flows with mystical energies.

When the trail is lost it barely registers to Kuikku. When Jareb says he will try to continue tracking the entity Kuikku ignores him as he is lost in his own mind. Even when the group leaves the line behind and continues to the town Kuikku still feels power flowing through himself. As they reach Avanzada Seca Kuikku senses every person all at once. The shock causes him to stumble and finaly breaks his concentration.

Looking around in a slight daze Kuikku mumbles to himself. ”That was intense. I think I understand a little better the powers that have been granted to me.” Glancing around as if this were his first time in town he takes in all the activity, and the illness. ”With great power comes great responsibility.”

Post by Deezy Klatta »

Deezy was quiet on the flight back to town; Deezy was never quiet.

Her mind constantly nattered and chattered as ideas battled for a moment of attention, and stars of inspiration flared and dwindled and died. Only the strong survived there.

Even as she reflected on the modifications to the Omniblaster to recover fully from the overcharge shot, something occurred to her. Something troublesome. Even though the blast had been an unqualified success, it had failed to achieve its purpose. Oh, the battle had been one, sure enough...but it seemed the 'shadow' still hung over the land.

Could it be that blowing something up hadn't proven effective? It was a traitorous question! One might as well ask if gravity was real, or if models of redshifted light scattering might fail to accurately portray expansion of the cosmos.

More data was required. Samples. Scenarios. FIELD OBSERVATIONS.

She angled down from her course to reach the swamp village early, plummeting through the sagging canopies of willow to splash down into mud and...well, probably gators or something else swampy. There she activated her TIAMAT goggles and started hunting down traces of that distinctive psychic/spiritual 'corruption' or whatever you wanted to call it. Deezy was pretty sure that another clash with this thing was inevitable, and if just 'blowing it up' didn't work, she needed a Plan B-through-Q as soon as possible!

Maybe prayers or whatever would work too; she'd leave that to Norona. Deezy was in the business of SCIENCE, and science was magical.

Taking the advance
+1 Agility - moves to d10
Tyraxas flies along the line for a time, hoping in vain to find some trace of the shadow monster. As the group gives in, he snorts in disgust. "I would tear that creature in twain with nothing more than my will, but...I believe it is lost to us." He peers down at his traveling companions. He notices the exhaustion in some of them, and encourages departure. "Let us not spend ourselves chasing phantoms. We should take our rest in town." Doing an aerial about-face, he begins leading the way back to Avanzada Seca.
My size has its advantages, but it seems also to foil my attempts at less macro-scale combat. He replays the fight in his mind, thinking of how to maximize his impact while not entirely removing himself from a lofty place of advantage. As the SET trudges on, he begins practicing his dives, slamming into the swamp and rolling to his feet in a combat stance. He chooses a variety of terrain and tree cover to give himself experience in how to fold his wings to navigate a crowded descent. After several rolls, he begins adding in clawed swipes reminiscent of Kuikku's sword slashes. He then begins aiming for smaller targets on bushes and shrubbery. Even in the short time of their return trip, his abilities seem to have grown sharper.
Upon their return to Avanzada Seca, he walks the perimeter of the town, hoping to see some improvement in the mood or the atmosphere. His face is downcast as the truth of their predicament is made clear. The fragmented shadow must be dealt with. He goes and seeks out Deezy to discuss a problem. "Deezy, I would like to commission a piece of gear that I believe you are uniquely suited to help me with. I can see differently, better, in some cases, when I wear the skull helm from the Coalition armor. I wonder if there is a way to cause the helm to grow with me when I take my true form? Perhaps the targeting systems can be reworked to function with my breath bolts?" He offers her the helm. "I can pay, though my fortune is meager right now. I will pledge to acquire whatever materials and money it will take to retain your services."

Re: 9. Lure of the Wilderness

Back in town Norona sees that much has changed, but also that nothing has changed. The great feeling of oppression has lifted, the death of the summoner and his shadows had freed the swap from its grip. Unfortunately, the deep wound into the soul of the swamp remained untended. Sitting alone in a clearing outside of town, the half-elf communes with the genus loci - the spirit of the swamp - and feels its sadness and loss. Without its power, the spirit is unable to do its job. Unable to sustain and grow the swamp and its inhabitants.

For a moment, Norona shares his spirit with the genus loci and becomes at one with the area. Every branch of every tree, the sound of every animal, the mighty presence of every great dinosaur, the potential of every humanoid life, all of it felt and experienced at once. All of it dying. The loci unable to sustain them. Snapping from his communion, Norona makes a sad sigh and heads back into town feeling the void in his being the same way the loci did. Two beings with a hole in their spirit. Perhaps together they might make one complete being. Suddenly aware of what he must do, Norona sets his face like flint.

Walking through town, distant and aloof, moving with intensity of purpose. Norona goes to see Conrad. The last of his companions remaining from Castle Refuge.

"Our mission remains incomplete. We have stopped the evil, but not repaired the damage. Trying to raise the raptor king to make reparations has also taken something from me. Much like the swamp itself, part of my spirit has died. It seems we are two parts of an incomplete whole." Sighing deeply, Norona gets on with what he has to say, "I believe that by joining my spirit with that of the swamp we can both become whole again. Unfortunately, this will permanently tie me to the swamp, I will not be able to leave. However, we will be able to continue our mission - which only you and I remain to complete." Norona adds one final sad comment, "This will also sever my ties to the gods of my homeworld and plant me firmly in this world. I will never return home."

After his conversation with Conrad, Norona heads into the swamp to join his spirit with the genus loci.
Fun
After talking with Timmy, Norona will be "one" with the swamp and permanently tied there meaning he won't be able to leave with the group but able to finish the current mission. This should effectively "end" the character but also allow us to adventure with less disruption.

Jareb comes chasing after Gift who seemed to develop the ability to crab walk upside down through the swamp. He scoops her up before she gets even further dirty and gives her a mighty hug. Can’t stay mad at you kid...

He spies Norona sharing something. He approaches softly whispering softly to Gift, ” What is Uncle Norona doing now?”

He smiles flapping his wings clean of excess moisture and asks a question of utmost importance ”Norona, what are you doing out here? I ah was hoping to talk to you about what you felt we should do next. I was thinking we could try tackling the jungle castle perhaps, unless there is something more pressing that needs to be done for Avanzada Seca. You always seem to know what this swamp needs.” I wonder if he suspects my part in the darkness that is aflicting this swamp?

@Jareb

Smiling at Gift, Norona then acknowledges Jared's presence. The fallen one confuses Norona quite a bit, obviously a being of light and goodness his presence is often confounding. However, this time the request is straightforward, "I believe it is time to resume our original mission. Locate and investigate cultist activity. The swamp castle seems the next likely spot."
