The Bleak Tome - A Mess in MercTown!

Post by Snake Eyes »

Between the disciplined scheduling of sorties run by Joseph, and Gaspard's blending in with the crowd at the bar with Dom, Missouri's fate doesn't befall the rest of the crew. In fact, their pooled efforts keep Dom from losing kidneys. (Or he lost out on one of the most mind-blowing nights of his life. He may never know.)
Everett's late arrival was just in time, as Alex's new friend arranged for a crew to be at Holly's Hut of Hamburgers to meet them. Skillful work with an ion pistol and pure brute strength drove off a 6 man crew looking to acquire a new teenaged weird scientist. With her plan falling apart, Nixie changes her mind. "Uh, sorry. I just remembered I..." A long glance at Everett interrupts her train of thought. She snaps to, then turns and bolts, leaving the poor kid confused and wondering about why girls would treat a boy that way.
Gaspard, with Proditione's vigorous (and brutal) assistance, manages to apprehend the least elusive of Dom's tails. He's a portly fellow with what looks like some low-grade cyberware installed. When interrogated, he holds out for about 30 seconds until Proditione's sword makes an appearance. He spews what he knows with little prompting beyond that. "Me'n my boys got hired ta watch the shifty one. Stupid good pay just ta watch 'im, folla' him 'roun'. Ain't even s'posed ta hit 'im or nuthin'. Oh, an'..." He pulls a small cat's eye gemstone from his pocket. "we was s'posed ta keep this with us. Maybe slip it into his pocket if we could get close 'nough. They said he was s'posed ta deliver somethin', an' they was just makin' sure he didn't bolt with it. I swear that's all!" When goaded, he describes the person who hired him. "Pretty boy. Maybe some kinna Asian? Dark hair. Pretty boy stubble. Prolly ain't done five minutes of hard work in 'is life. Had a big tough with him, what prolly did all the liftin', knowwhatI'msayin'? Big guy was all cloaked up though. Couldn't make 'im out. Big though. BIG." His discomfort at being around a demon gets the better of him, and he begins begging forgiveness from any god who would listen, hoping to avoid being dragged to hell with his interrogator's demonic enforcer.
Gaspard
The final disposition of this fellow is up to you. Kill, release, or have Perdi jog his memory, Fezzik-style.
In your next post, deposit a Kn: Arcana roll, and on a success, a Detect Arcana / Spellcasting roll, for the cat's eye stone.
Joseph's new acquisition, though, seems a little more in the know, and much cooler under interrogation. Between threats and hints of violence, and a heavy dose of liquid truth (whiskey), Joseph manages to extract a bit of information. He was tasked with watching a group of local small time thugs who were tailing a target of interest. The target's final disposition for the night was to be relayed by radio to a certain frequency. He keeps watch until the answer comes, then he's gone. The answer is always a woman's voice. "Worked a few of these before. Never seen any of the marks after that woman's voice answers me. Pay's always good, too, so I don't ask no questions." Based on what he's saying, it seems that this guy, and the party watching Dom, are not affiliated with each other. You manage pry the frequency from him, and can plug it into any radio, if you choose.
Joseph
Final disposition is up to you, as well. Unfortunately, other than being an intermediary for a woman's voice, this guy gives up nothing else.
The following day, the 12th reconvenes in the breakfast area of the inn to compare notes. Missouri is a no-show. None of you have seen him since the previous evening. Gill and Curatrix still haven't materialized, either.
As you discuss what you know between you, Ghurab appears at the doors of the inn. He has a weary look on his face, and seems a little distressed. He moves into the breakfast area and addresses his friend. "Joe..." He stops short, looks quickly around him, then shakes his head. "I need you all to come with me to the College." He refuses to answer questions, only stating "We've found something. It's not safe out here. We'll talk at the College."
You follow Ghurab to the College. He's moving with urgency, as fast as he can walk without making a scene or a sprint. You pass the gates and two massive elemental watchers, one Earth, one Air, pay you nothing more than a glance as they keep their vigil. Ghurab leads you into the main building, down hallways, until you get to the Great Library. As he goes, he pulls Joseph close. "Joe, it's someone inside, somehow. The attack was a fake. They needed cover to get..." He clams up as you pass the doors of the library.
The library is in immaculate condition, especially considering it had been ransacked just a few days before. Several apprentices and a few (likely summoned) otherworldly helpers are putting the finishing touches on placing the books back on shelves in their particular order. And you would need that particular order; the walls and shelves are stuffed with thousands upon thousands of books, scrolls, parchments, and tablets. To have a book out of its place in this library would take days to find. The place is truly magnificent.
Ghurab leads you to an unconventional sight amongst tomes of learning and knowledge; an orc, clad in robes, sitting at a table, looking at what appears to be an inventory.
Xiaodi-Jin.jpg
He looks up at you. "You are the ones aiding us, yes? I am Xiaodi-Jin. You may call me Jin. Please, sit." He stands, gestures at the chairs around the table (enough for each of you) and sits again. "Ghurab has informed me of your assistance in finding the truth of what happened to us the other evening. I thank you for your efforts on our behalf. I have something I wish to share with you." He looks down at the inventory, then shuts the tome. "The library was a shambles after the attack. Books everywhere." He looks over each of your faces. "Only one book was taken. One. Not another book in the library was so much as even scuffed, nor a page bent." He glances around, then closes his eyes. With a wave of his hand, the librarian's silence overtakes you all. A shimmering globe surrounds the group, ensuring your words stay within the bounds of the spell. "The book that was stolen was a history book. The history, though, was dark. Necromantic cults, those who consort with demons -" He stops short, regarding Proditione briefly, then continues. "- as a regular practice, and such. However, this volume described, in detail, the steps taken to create a Tome of Darkness, a book of such unspeakable horror and power. Its creation required sacrifices and pacts with...well, I won't bore you." He sits back in his chair, probing his temples with his hands. "I have no idea what anyone would want with such a book. The steps required to scribe the evil tome would take ten thousand years, a hundred thousand sacrifices each year, and a hideous ritual while consorting with a demon lord of the worst kind. We know of no such tome; this was a flight of fancy on the part of these necromancers, always looking for their eternal unlife. Why the book went into the steps to unmake such a tome is beyond me. Again, all a flight of fancy, if you ask me." He sighs. "Still, Lexitros, the chief librarian, wants the book returned. Have you any idea who might've taken the book?"
Instructions
You have a few threads you can tug at. The one book taken, oddly enough, just so happens to be the book containing the instructions to destroy the Tome of Darkness that Jin doesn't know exists. You have two separate parties interested in Dom's whereabouts, one of them even following the other to follow their guy. Missouri, Gill, and Curatrix are all missing. (Please note: while my previous post lists Missouri as stumbling into the inn, this will be, as his last post states, a few days down the road, and may have to be amended depending on if and when Alan/Missouri returns to us. For your purposes, he is presently missing, with no known whereabouts.)
Someone has marked Alex as another juicy target, and his abduction was thwarted by Everett's timely return (after he got drawn into a secret Battledome death match).
Ghurab and Jin are available for additional questions and RP. I will endeavor to be much more active here than I have been. Please, take a benny for the exceptional delay, with my sincerest apologies for the slowdown.

After considering his options, Gaspard first disrupts the magic on the eye, takes a photo of it, and finally takes it back to the entry gate of the town, sticking it into one of the lockers provided for dangerous weapons. Gotta talk to a certain 'transportation specialist' about this....

The displacer Beast Shroud drops and Xero is standing with the group. The last few days have allowed him to gain control of his senses and actually be able to untangle the smells and scents of all the mages and such.

At the mention of time for crafting the Tome, "Any idea how long it would take to destroy the Tome after it was crafted? I mean you seem to know the contents of the crafting book quite well."

When the others look at him, Xero just shrugs, "What!?! No harm in asking."

>This book is a hotter than a hooker wearing a snowsuit in Ciudad Juárez, Dom thinks to himself as he contemplates all his newfound followers and listens to the librarian describes what was stolen. What doesn't add up is the librarian not knowing that the black tome actually exists. How the hell can he know so much about it and not even have an inkling of its existence?

The questions puts a few terrifying thoughts into Dom's mind, the first being that the librarian is the inside man! With no proof to back it up the Rift Runner keeps his mouth shut but tries to think of a solution. Finally he sets down his back back and pulls out a mask that looks like the face of a dog or coyote. Smiling he looks to the librarian, "Mind if I take a look at things through this mask? It can see things most people can't" </s>Including your thoughts, ass hat.

Donning the mask and putting on a show of sniffing around and looking over all the shelves, Dom asks the librarian a few casual follow-up questions. "Do you remember anything else about the book that was taken? Any unique signature to track it, or special way it needs to be stored?"

Chuckling he jokingly asks, "I mean you don't know where it got to right?"

You recognize a lingering scent in the library. It is familiar, and recently. You smelled it after the conflict with the bears, high on the ridge overlooking the fight. It is the same summoner. This is not the same vaguely familiar scent from outside in the courtyard where the attack began. You feel like you should know that scent, too, but you simply cannot place it.
The orc arcanist smiles at Xero. "Unfortunately, I stopped reading after the portion about the creation of the tome. Its crafting is so unlikely as to be pure frivolity in print. I scanned the remainder of the book, though I've retained very little. I know the ritual to unmake the Tome is far more brief." He shrugs. "I'm sorry. There are other books to read with more utility to our studies here at the Guild."
The orc mage, apparently unaware of Dom's mental probe, answers the base questions quite truthfully. "No. Frankly, it is little more than a chronicling and a fool's wish list. Nothing distinguishes it from any other grimoire. Champions of Death Incarnate are unlikely to obey the commands of such a ritual. It would be as if one took Erin Tarn's history book and combined it with the Great Chef Fieri's cookbooks, except the recipes contain ingredients that would be impossible to obtain and unlikely to combine in the way they're described."
The mental probe reveals Jin's own doubts, as well as new questions. Who among the council would have the audacity to steal such a meaningless book, when they could simply check it out? Kraskut hasn't been seen in years. None of the others would betray Cearcy. And why this book? Without the aid of a grandmaster of temporal magic, none would see the end result in their lifetime. His mind then wanders to new curiosities. Why has the bloodsucker asked about unmaking the Tome? He doesn't seem the type to indulge in worthless hypotheticals. Has...has someone discovered a Tome of Darkness?! Gods preserve us if so!
Dom's search of the mage's mind is thorough. He is not the inside man, but it sounds as if the search for the inside man may go all the way to the Guild Council.

Heather listened to the librarian, turning her thoughts over in her mind. “Who else knew of this book’s existence?” she asked. “Do you have any records of who may have checked it out recently? Perhaps they checked it out and found they needed it more...permanently.”

Heather reached out with her mind to her teammates. Anyone else get the feeling someone knew why we came here and stole the book to keep it from us? she asked. Who knows the Tomorrow Legion has the tome and would be privy to our mission?

"I would say we have been followed or at least sold out."

When Xero catches Jin's curious look, Xero tries to describe to Jin, the encounter with the mage on the ridge. "I say he was a guy, truth is I din't actualy see him. I sensed him and his brand of arcane. He left his mark on the summoned altered bears that attacked us en route."

"I identified him here when we arrived after the theft. And he was in this room not very long ago."

Xero leaves Jin's side and walks back towards the entryway of the library. Reaching the door he stops. "There is one more flavor of magic here. Very familiar, but not familiar enough to jog the memories attached to it."

Xero stands in the doorway puzzled as if asking himself a question and waiting for himself to answer.

His cursory investigation complete Dom keeps his mouth shut while the others continue their questioning. A conspiracy in the grand council of the MercTown magical college is well above his power level and more importantly his pay check. Sticking his neck out against beings like that had no value whatsoever, especially for the peanuts the legion was offering. Someone wants the book and can't get it so they stole the only way to find out how to destroy it in order to buy themselves some time.

Putting the council members together with temporal magic might narrow the pool, but finding out who they were and what arcane arts they practiced would be a tall order. It might be time to call in some favours...except the Hand was on his tail too.

I might have to trust the legion jokers afterall. They're the only ones dumb enough to not want the book.

Honestly the displacer beast Xero through down seemed to go unnoticed by Alex. His attention wasn’t even on the grandness of the books that now surrounded him. No, his focus was on his thoughts internal. Alex looks at Jin who has taken on his role in asking questions with a wary eye. Sullenly he mutters, ” Probably the same one that broke my heart... Purple hair, quick smile, awesome shades, goes by Nixie, and tried to kidnap me while playing on my niavity.” He sighs leaning on a stack of books as he continues his rambling answer, ” Thought I had made a friend, but it was a good thing Heather brought Everette to the diner other wise I’d end up like those that aren’t even here. Growing up you here stories about Merc Town. The wonders, the oppertunities, the gaming folks that live here... Just a lie isn’t it.”

Alex wiped his face with his sleeve wishing Jude or Libertas were arround able to give him some advice. Sadly the one he turned too is @Dominic Skodati. He reached out to the worst of the worst with arms stretched wide and eyes moist with tears. Deep in his mind his subconsous knew whatever drivel spewed out of Dom’s mouth was only going to be half as good as the advice he would get from real heroes. Still a hug from half a hero might help the kid.

Heather yeah we... We were targets, you... You still there? Can you help me find Nixie? I know she has something to do with this... I just know it.

Confronted by the situation at the college (he just barely caught up with the others at the gate after depositing the stone in the lockers), Gaspard quickly catches up with everyone else's activities, and then expresses suitable dismay at the attack on the library. He's too distracted by the scene to notice Dominic crawling into Jin's mind. He does transfer the image to Dom's comm unit with a short message. You may want to check your gear for other samples. We can try to trace the tracking signal later--the stone is someplace relatively secure for now.

After considering, and listening to the others' questions, he pulls Jin aside, speaking quietly. "You are in a position to see people coming and going, and to observe their interests. Do any of the senior members of the academy have... exotic interests? Specifically, interest in necromancy? I mean, ostensibly in an academic fashion? Naturally, the school would forbid actual experimentation in such arts, but there's always a scholar who wants to push the envelope in the name of greater understanding."

When @Alex goes in for a hug Dom gives a half-hearted man hug and rolls his eyes over the kid's shoulder. "Listen kid," he says sagely. "Women are always trying to kill you. Either the fast way to take your stuff. Or the slow way by marrying you and grinding you into dust."

Love advice out of the way, Dom gives a nod to @Gaspard Gillead regarding the tracking stone. "We are in the library of the great arcane college of MercTown perhaps we can research a counter spell to reverse track the stone's owner. With old Jin's help it probably own't take too long to narrow it down."

Joseph dives deep into the libraries archives. While the book they need is missing, he uses the catalog to cross reference any other book that might be relevant in finding out how to destroy the cursed tome. He dedicates himself to this task just as readily as he would to fighting a foe, fully focused, almost in a meditative state.

Alex looks up at the half hearted hugging man normally called Dominic and nods feeling a bit better about what happened. It was good advice, at least in his estimate as good as the advice he once got from Jude. He looks at Dom and Gaspard inquiring how his own skills might be put to use on researching the counterspell, " I am not slouch when it comes to matters of the arcane. Adriana, Marten, and Pahi Oki
You have been in MercTown for the last two weeks, investigating a death cult that you have reason to believe is a credible threat to Tomorrow Legion interests in the area. Your most recent discovery that a dragon is leading the cult prompted your superior officers to have you link up with the 12th AAT who has just arrived in MercTown within the last few days. A Legion contact at the Collegiate Arcane, a woman named Lanasa, has arranged lodging for you at the Wizard's Wayside Inn, located in the Mystic Quarter. She has informed you that most of the members of the 12th AAT are staying there, though a couple have gone missing since their arrival; the mystic, Gill and his guardian Curatrix, and the team leader, Missouri Smith, are all unaccounted for.
Presently, the 12th is located at the Collegiate Arcane & Magic Guild. Access is restricted due to an "incident," but Joseph Cook, a member of the 12th, has contacts in the security force. They've been given access in order to assist with the investigation into the "incident."
INSIDE THE GRAND LIBRARY
Xiaodi-Jin, the orcish sage, nods at Dominic. "Yes, of course. There are numerous books on following arcane sight to its origin. My favorite is Sage Sigil Schuster's Scrying for Sorcerers: How To See The Seer. Sage Schuster's step-by-step approach leaves little guesswork on running a successful reverse-scrying ritual." He moves towards one of the shelves, scans with his outstretched finger, and then points. An impish sprite flutters to the spot indicated, then pulls a sleek, leatherbound tome from its resting place. "Here you are. Please have that back in 6 days." He notes the book as checked out in his ledger, and identifies Dominic Skodati as the borrower.
He ponders Gaspard's question regarding council members interested in necromancy, if even for pure academic curiosity. "Necromancy...not as such. Menelaus Clotho serves on the Council here, as well as the Guild Council in Kingsdale. He...has changed, I think, in recent memory. He is one of Guild Master Cearcy's oldest friends, but spends much time through the Rifts. I suspect he has experienced something that affected him. He has since come in to the library with very...erratic literary requests. Books on death checked out at the same time as scrolls on dragonsblood potion-making, and a treatise on techno-wizard converted kitchen gadgets to go with a copy of "Unlimited Power" by the mind-melter Tony Robbins. Prior to that, he rarely graced the walls of the library." He pauses, pulling at threads in his mind, trying to provide any helpful information. "Daemor Kraskut, a long-standing member of the council, hasn't been seen in many years. His manor is abandoned, or he has become a recluse. Guild Master Cearcy refuses to allow his chair to be put up for election. One believes he has knowledge of Kraskut's whereabouts if Cearcy will not fill the seat. If he had interest in necromancy, I suspect he would have no need to plunder our texts. Beyond that, the Council is comprised of noble and honorable folk who would never dream of stooping to necromancy, even for knowledge of trivia."
At that moment, Ghurab returns and gestures to Joseph. Cook excuses himself and exits the sphere of silence. A few words are exchanged. Ghurab catches Heather's eye, holds up a note, and leaves it on a table just outside the spell's radius. The two men then walk briskly out of the library. Jin turns to the rest of you. "I hope I have been of some help. I wish I had paid more attention to the stolen book. Perhaps if I had scanned it better, I may be able to impart more of the information contained therein. If I think of anything else, I can pass a message to Ghurab. If you'll excuse me, I must ensure the library is restored." With a wave of his hand, the sphere of secrecy fades, and he returns to directing the library assistants in the cleanup efforts.
Heather picks up the note, which reads: "The Legion has sent you reinforcements. They are with me at the Wizard's Wayside.
-- Lanasa"
As you exit the Collegiate Arcane grounds, Xero mutters something about seeking outside assistance, then heads off towards Temple Street. He ignores any attempts at contact.

AT THE WIZARD'S WAYSIDE INN
Upon your return to the Inn, you find Lanasa in her now-familiar location in the breakfast area, sitting with three unfamiliar faces. "Oh, you got my message! These three, I'm told, have been reassigned to your team temporarily. It seems your missions may have crossed? What have you found regarding the attack on the college?"
Instructions
At this point, some initial "getting to know you" RP is encouraged. Try not to start any fights amongst yourselves. As we left off before the break, Gaspard and Dom are looking into a ritual to reverse the enchantment on a scrying stone found during previous scourings of the city for leads. The next post, due soon-ish, will be a ritual to do just that, along with some other additional investigations.

Details are important. You never know when a little bit of information, applied at just the right time, can turn into leverage. So I ate up the gossip on the council members and tucked it away for when I needed to talk my way out of trouble or trade on one of their predilections.

Nodding to the group Dom collected the reverse scrying book, wincing that he had to use his real name. There was no point in lying though. It wasn't like you could forge a library card for the collegiate. He shuddered at what the late fees would be.

I'll just bill 'em to the Legion.

Back at the Inn Dom looks over the newcomers and smiles, seemingly genuinely.

"More heroes, fantastic," he says. More people to suck up bullets.

"We got a line on tracking back a few people interested in the book and a few other leads to chase down. Give us the low down on your mission and we'll see where they cross over."

Leaning back he puts a cigarette in his mouth, patently ignoring the no smoking sign. A lighter appears in his hands out of nowhere, lights the smoke, and disappears again.

A silent figure stands up from his cross-legged position near the fire. He turns towards the gathered members of the 12th, "I am Pahi Oki of the Everglades." His Americanese is halting but one would also guess that he is weighing his choice in words.

Lanasa speaks up, "Pahi Oki isfrom the Dinosaur Swamps and is a shaman or seer of the Seminole First Nation tribes of that area. He is a tracker as well as voice for the elements. His exchange with the College is completed. Instead of returning him to Refuge, the Legion has seen fit to attach him to your unit."

As Dom puts the cigarette to his lips, Pahi Oki waves his hand and a glowing hot coal from the fire floats before his face just as the lighter appears. Waving his hand, Pahi Oki whispers "Loot-Kah" and the ember comes to life with a two inch flame of intense heat.

Gaspard makes note of Dominic's name in the ledger. That could be useful later, if I have to run him to ground. Aloud, he simply says to Dominic, "I'll let you look over the book, then, and determine what's needed for the ritual; when you've grokked it, let me know and I'll join you."

He also takes notes on potential figures of interest, his notes jotted down in a multilingual shorthand in the notebook he carries with him at all times. "Hm... Even if Menalaus isn't the one, his eclectic interests may mean he has some useful intelligence about the Tome. As for Kaseur, the explanation for a missing wizard, in my experience, is usually either comic or catastrophic--occasionally both. We should probably poke around a bit, so long as we have the authority to do so."

Back at the Inn, he nods in affirmation of Dominic's summary, then looks to the trio of newcomers. "Greetings. Gaspard Gillead. The huge fellow in the cloak is Proditione, or Perdi when he's being obnoxious, which is usually. I hope you were appraised of his presence here--if not, be assured that the demon is completely under my thumb, and only commits those acts I permit him. He is useful in situations requiring violence or intimidation, and while bound to me here, he is unable to participate in the atrocities that would normally entertain his ilk. As for me, I look forward to working with you all."

The D'norr smiles at the three of them, waiting for their own introductions.

True to renewed form the wide eyed kid named Alex with a bushy head of hair and a gleam of that was so cool pees himself as @Pahi Oki introduces himself. Alex cannot help but spew forth a series of questions not even befit of the so called merc town courts, “How do your legs bend like that? Do you always sit cross legged? How long did that take you to learn? Are you weighing your words by choice? Wha—-“ Alex halts his enthusiastic explosion when the flame expands, “So Ice! How did you do that? Did you do that? Can you do that again?” Alex wiped the back of his hand on a Dres’ Marbles T-shirt half hidden by the leather jack he had on.

Re: The Bleak Tome - A Mess in MercTown!

Post by Everett Jackson »

Everett chooses to stay behind at the Wizard's Wayside when the others head off to what he considers future Hogwarts. Most magic types get nervous around Balitrox, and it seethes around them, so the whole situation isn't worth the headache; with the whole crew together, there shouldn't be too much opportunity for trouble. They can just fill him in on all the magic nonsense when they get back.

The reinforced bed creaks and groans ominously as Everett sits up. There's no sense in missing out on a little lazy time alone at the inn, especially when he's likely to be pulling double time soon keeping everyone safe. With the team, and breakfast time, quickly approaching, Everett pulls on his boots then stands up. He gets into his armor in record time, holsters his ion pistol and snatches Balitrox up then heads out to breakfast.

Balitrox begins glowing maliciously as Everett enters the common area.

'Let me have the woman (@Adriana). She reeks of power. Shes dangerous. Kill her and bathe me in her lifeblood!'

Everett sighs as if someone has annoyed him then scratches his face.

'Its too early for your bullshit, Bali. She looks real dangerous sitting there minding her own business. What's she gunna do, scratch me? She'd probably break a nail.'

'The...Irony'

Balitrox falls silent and his glow dims to a nearly imperceptible level.

Lanasa gets Everett up to speed on the unexpected new arrivals and then he introduces himself to them, "Everett Jackson. You could say I'm the muscle. Long story short, I'm not from around neither here nor now. Magic, psionics, techno-wizardry, dragons, monsters, alien..er D-Bees. Most of 'em are new to me. I find that a fist to the face or a well-placed shot with an appropriately sized firearm works just as well now as it did back in my day, though, so don't stress about it. If it can die I can kill it."

Everett looks around and finds the sturdiest unoccupied chair in the room then pulls it up to Lanasa's table, "Don't mind if I dig in, do you?"

"So, tell me about yourselves (@Pahi Oki, @Marten, @Adriana). Dumb it down for my little brain, too, eh? American doesn't sound quite like it used to, so I struggle sometimes. That's not even to mention all the weirdness out there now-a-days," Everett says as he starts eating.

When the others show up, Everett greets them warmly and asks, "Alright, what do I need to know? Oh, and, Lanasa brought us some new friends. I'll let Lanasa introduce you..."

  • Uncanny Reflexes: Juicer reflexes are superhuman, granting them −2 to be hit by any attack they are aware of and +2 on Evasion rolls.
Note: Neither Quick nor Uncanny Reflexes apply on the first round of an unexpected combat/high-stress situation.
Combat-Relevant Edges & Abilities:
  • Ravenous Abandon (Berserk): Per the Berserk Edge, Everett can flip the switch and give partial control over his actions to the Reaver of Essence. This comes at a cost - ending Balitrox's berserking rage is not an option until its hunger has been sated by the blood of a wielder of arcane power
  • Charge: She may ignore the penalty for Running when making a Fighting attack at the end of her movement.
    • Overrun: If he moves at least one inch beyond his normal Pace before making any Fighting attacks, the hero adds +2 to the damage rolls. Any target Shaken by such an attack is knocked prone.
  • Drug-induced Euphoria/Tranquility: In order to keep the Juicer from burning out over a matter of days, the bio-comp constantly supplies a combination of psychotropic drugs and chemical inhibitors to keep him happy and calm. Juicers live in a state somewhere between mildly ecstatic and stoned, which causes −1 to all Smarts or Smarts-linked skill rolls in non-combat or low stress situations. On the first round of an unexpected combat or high-stress situation, the Juicer doesn’t gain the benefits of Uncanny Reflexes or Quick.
  • Frenzy: A character with Frenzy rolls a second Fighting die with any one of his Fighting attacks for the turn. The extra die may be allocated to the same or different targets as he sees fit. Resolve each separately.
  • Internal Repair System: As an action, the Juicer can make a natural healing roll at +2 to heal Wounds; this costs one charge.
  • Level Headed: Draw an additional Action Card each round in combat and choose which one to use.
  • Multi-Optic Helmet: It includes a targeting sight, magnification, thermal, infrared, ultraviolet, and night optics. The wearer ignores Illumination penalties, gains +2 to sight-based Notice checks or to offset Range penalties, and +1 Shooting with calibrated weapons. The helmet includes a hands-free radio (10-mile range) and megaphone voice-projection system.
  • Quick: Whenever you are dealt an Action Card of Five or lower, you may discard it and draw again until you get a card higher than Five.
  • Size +2
  • Split the Seconds: Juicers and Crazies often find themselves living between the ticks of the clock. This Edge allows them to ignore 2 points of Multi-Action penalties each turn (they can perform two actions at no penalty or three at −2 each).
  • Super Endurance: They require only half the normal amount of sleep and gain +2 on all Fatigue checks.
  • Trademark Weapon, Improved: +2 to Fighting with Balitrox and +2 Parry when Balitrox is readied.

Marten stands when the others approaching, shaking each hand firmly. He is dressed casually wearing jeans and a Green Deadball Jersey with the number 13 in big white letters. He has the handle of a sword on his hip, a big red ruby where a blade should be. He eyes the demon carefully but takes Gaspard's word that it is under control.

"My name is Marten. We were sent here by the Legion to investigate a cult. We are still in the preliminary stages of our investigation, but the evidence points to it being led by a dragon, type unknown. We were told to meet up with you all, so here we are. Round 0

Heather smiled at Lanasa and the new Legionnaires as she took a seat at the table. “Hello,” she greeted. “I’m Heather Todd.” She didn’t mention that she was a mind melter. No sense poisoning the water right off. They would figure it out soon enough. She listened to them explain their mission about the cult.

“Tell me about this cult’s activities,” Heather said. Did they somehow cross with the 12th’s investigation, and someone at the Castle figured it out? “Our mission here is to research how do destroy a dangerous artifact, but the book we need was just stolen from the College library last night. So we are following up on that to find the book we need.”

Turning from the native, Alex’s jaw almost drops as if he had never seen a black man. His pants darken themselves a bit wet from his imagined excitement pee. “Oh wow...” Barely a breath and then a verbal onslought was unleashed in @Marten’s direction. “Did you just eye Perdi? That demon would eat your heart out if Gaspard did not have him under control. Do you play Deadball? Are you on the Widowmaker team? Why does your sword have a ruby instead of a blade, is it magicial? What is magic? Who sent you from the legion, how long have you been here. Who told you to meet us? Why is it a pleasure to meet us? Our pleasure or your pleasure?”

He took a breath winding down a bit. He seemed out of place with the heroes wearing a leather jacket, tunic, brown pants, and some sandals. For all anyone knew he was just their plucky mascott.

Adriana stands to shake hands with those offering it. She has her long dark hair currently pulled back into a tail. Across her back she has a silver-plated sword. Her American is a bit broken.

"Adriana Da Silva. Am 'muscle', too. Werepanther. Most weapon will no hurt. Study magic some."

She figured someone better spoken should be the one to tell about the cult they had been following. Her eyes latched onto the demon and the evil blade and narrows. She huffs at @@Gaspard Gillead 's statement that the demon is under his control. "Es better dead."

Gaspard blinks at @Adriana, but then nods. He then replies, not in American, but in fluent Spanish, albeit a more formal than her native dialect. "I agree, in theory. However, if we kill him, he will simply return to Hades, reconstitute, and then run around at his liberty, free to follow his own inclinations. Here, he is bound to my will."

Alex barely uttered an awe-filled, “Yes...” to @Marten when his eyes refocus on the newest shiny arrival. His jaw hits the floor and if it could happen his brown pants darken even more. The cause perhaps was similar to an excited dog meeting their favorite person in the world. “You are so Ice!” A proclamation meant for @Adriana as he launched into a verbal spewage not seen since the great cataclysm.

“How did your dark hair become a tail? Is that sword silver plated. Do you also have a problem with Gaspard and Perdi? I would not look at them wrong or you might be put under Gaspard’s control... Ooooo magic!” He waves his hands in a spooky fashion emphasizing just how powerful @Gaspard Gillead was. After half a moment he caught his breath renewing his line of excitable questioning, “Why is your American broken? What kind of magic do you study? Why will no weapons hurt you? Are you a vampire?” usually when people suspect other people of being a vampire that is a bad thing, but something in Alex’s eye indicated if @Adriana was such a creature he would find it awesome! But then his eyes narrowed and he took a protective step towards the demon under Gaspards control, “Please don’t kill Perdi, he is teaching me so much about life and women.” How would this kid not more than 14 protect himself let alone Perdi was a mystery but he seemed earnest in his statement.

Watching everything unfold Dom leans back and smokes his cigarette, impolitley using his mystic sense to look over everyone in the room (detect arcana)

Gong show, absolute freaking gong show.

That's what our team is, and it only got more interesting. The new guy from the swamps is something I haven't seen before kinda primal. And the gal with the accent. She's hot stuff, but were beasts are a little too wild even for my predilections. Still, it's always good to know who to stand behind. And, hey, if the view is good from back there even better.

Marten, or Deadballs as I'm going to call him from now on looks pretty saavy with magic too. better keep an eye on him. Next thing you know he'll want to be looking at the book. Too dangerous to let it out of my sight. Too dangerous for me anyway.

And, the kid, something is off about him, always running his mouth at a mile a minute. Maybe he's cursed.

Taking another long drag Dom glaces down at his new scrying text from the collegiate library, "Let's hurry this up. I got a date with a peeping tom."

Someone is watching me, time to turn the tables on them.

In Spanguese, @Gaspard Gillead "They usually have to be summoned to return. Evil is always better killed. It listens now. But that could change."

Her attention is then dragged to the kid who is going to need to start wearing diapers. @Alex There is very obvious confusion at being called ice. She certainly isn't frozen. Weird kid. Because of his speed at rattling off questions she misses some of it. "No control..." She was also starting to reach back to show the kid how a ponytail works. Then he caught his breath and asked if she was a vampire and she growled angrily at him. "Vampires evil. Must die!"

Then she looks back at Gaspard. In Spanguese, "This is what comes of letting a demon raise a child! Why are you allowing this?" She looks ready to kill someone. Certainly not far from a fight.

@Adriana spoke to @Gaspard Gillead in Spanguese and Pahi Oki found himself with a language more familiar to him.

In Spanguese to Adriana, "You are from where?"

Continuing in Sanguese, "In the Everglades my home, we have some like you, that is if you are a form changer."

Alex’s nose scrunched up, some of these folks were cool. Like @Adriana and @Marten took the time to answer his important questions. But one of these folks just ignored him... @Pahi Oki might be some trouble. As the adults started talking in their made up grown-up language he slid to his best friend @Everett Jackson and poked him gingerly in the knee cap. With less excitement than usual he softly whispered jerking his head toward @Pahi Oki, “Everrete, I think we got a black ice situation here. Does Ball have any feelings on the—-“

His concern reached an abborhal halt when @Dominic Skodati let the cat out of the bag confessing he had a date with a guy named Tom, “You’re Gay!!? Not that there is a problem with that. I think I could feel it when you hugged me man. That is just Ice!” His excitable nature roared back to life, ”Yeah you could use some work before the date.” He clapped Everett’s knee volunteering the titan juicer and himself, “Ok, we are on team Dom. Lets get you ready for this Tom fella.”

Gaspard continues to speak to Adriana in her native language, actually beginning to adopt some of the accent and dialect as he does so, though it'll be a while before he could pass as a native Brazilian. "Please, remain calm. The boy is no more being 'raised' by the demon than your hair is a literal tail. Alex is brave, but easily interested in anything new or different from the norm--hence his fascination with Vampires. The demon certainly had nothing to do with that. As for the other--demons CAN escape Hades via portals and Rifts unattended; furthermore, they can be summoned by other Shifters if not already bound to one. By keeping him here, I prevent both free-ranging terror and someone else calling him for nefarious purposes. Now, if our relationship should ever change--if it ever seems as if Proditione is calling the shots and I am under his dominion--then I give you full permission to not only kill him, but me as well. Though I take all steps possible to prevent such an occurrence, I would be foolish to the point of hubris to refuse to entertain the possibility."

Whispering back to @Alex conspiratorially, "He wanted me to axe the panther immediately, but I don't think she's actually evil. Bali tries to get me to kill anyone with magic, but he only gets really pushy when they're bad guys. He practically gave up once I told him no to the girl. Without even trying to correct Alex, Everett gives @Dominic Skodati the biggest shit-eating grin, "Wow, good catch Alex. Everett Jackson, Titan Juicer
Everett, Human Titan Juicer
Pace: 10(d8); Parry: 8(1) Toughness: 24(9)

Marten shakes his head. "Stuck? No, not struck. Graced. If you have to worry about your weapon, is it possible it's cursed?"

He shakes his head again. "A peeping Tom isn't a person... he explains to the young man "It's a figure of speech, it means someone who spies on someone else."

Lanasa scrunches her face and smiles awkwardly as the stench of Alex's new cologne, Eau de Bladder, reaches her nose. She inquires of the members of the 12th. "I wonder how it is that your individual assignments have crossed. A dragon heading a death cult sounds frightening! Does this death cult have anything to do with your presence here? Are they responsible for the incident at the college?" Her eyes are drawn to the book as Dom mentions a peeping tom. "Oh, Scrying for Sorcerers! Schuster is one of my favorites. Are you intending to conduct a scrying ritual to find the culprit? How exciting! I might be able to assist! First, you'll need power, obviously. You're in luck, being in MercTown! The ley lines running through the town are easily tapped, although this sort of thing should be done in a place you don't want the original seeker to see. Oooh, you should look into..." ...and she continues to regale you with a host of instructions and suggestions to running a successful ritual. You'd think she had this book memorized. Her primary points, though, are to access a ley line from a location where you don't want to be viewed yourselves. If your intention is to keep them off your trail, running a seance from the breakfast area of Wizard's Wayside is akin to shining a magical spotlight on the building. She initially suggests a nexus, but then retracts when she realizes the Collegiate Arcane is unlikely to allow such a proceeding on the grounds considering recent events. "I doubt very much that they'll let you back in, even to return the book, if you draw a death cult onto the grounds...again, it seems."
Instructions
Continue RPing. Hammer out a plan of action. There is a ritual to conduct, but other leads to follow up on as well (Kraskut, Clotho, where are Gill/Curatrix and Missouri? Do you even care?). Give me an idea of how wide or narrow you'd like to focus the search, or even if you just want to run the ritual and chase the peeping tom on the other side. The next major post will be tweaked according to your plans. No rush.

Alex eyed Lanasa smelling him. He moved away from her intrusion and mistaken sense of metaphor. He puffed up the collar of his leather jacket having at last figured out who was who. There was only one person missing from this bunch, @Missouri! Alex muttered, “Ice this... No way big M leaves without saying good-bye.”
Backing away toward whatever contituted an exit he tugged on @Everett Jackson’s treetrunk calf and whispered, “While the grown-ups jabber in their madeup language, can you help me find Missouri? He wouldn't run off in the middle of this. Even if you can’t help find him, last time I went out alone I almost got killed so I could use a deterrent.” The kid had no weapons, no armor, just a leather jacket over his tunic, black satchel, brown pants, and some footwear loosely described as sneakers. Alex waited half a second for the answer before striking out into the streets. He gave Perdi a high five on his way out and @Dominic Skodati an appologetic shrug. Team Dom would have to wait...

Pahi thinks about the rituals and such that he has been a part of. While not on a Ley Line it still is a conduit of power and may be able to mask the ritual behind the other power sources being utilized in the building.

"Holy Place near Tavern. Good place for many magics." (Reference the Temple of the Four Elements)

"Help? Oh yeah. Demon-lover offer to lend a hand maybe one of the new guys. Sounds like Lasana could be handy too." Giving a nod to Pah he is non-commital about the temple, "Can't channel the elements. We're going to need the ley line, maybe we rent a place somewhere along it. I hear the Warrens are pretty lawless, gotta have a flophouse on the line we can commandeer...and hey if things don't work out with Tom a flophouse is a good second best."

Gaspard rolls his eyes at Dominic, but then nods. "Yes, I shall be assisting Mister Skodati in his efforts. @Heather Todd, may I recommend that @Adriana accompany you? She is, as she has noted, 'muscle', and therefore should complement your own abilities nicely. And unlike her reaction to my associate, I doubt she will find anything objectionable about your company."

He turns to Adriana, then, and makes sure she understands the request by speaking in Spanish. "Some of our teammates have gone missing, and we are breaking into teams to find them; Miss Todd, here, would benefit from some physical protection as she searches for one of them."

He then looks back to @Dominic Skodati. "Well, then, let's be off. And if we fail to find Tom, I'm certain that Proditione would be happy to provide you with companionship tonight...."

The grownups had once again resumed their made up language and Alex stifled a smirking laugh. I used to pretend I had a sister so I could do that too. He rapped his knuckles on Everette’s ankle gesturing to the sprawl that was Merc Town before the pair of intrepid investigators. Softly with a fair amount of determination he whispered to the big juicer, “Somewhere big M is out there. I don’t care if we have to lift every crook, have you turn every trick, talk to every sleezy bag in this awesome town of joy joy. We are going to find him.”

Everett hustles towards the doors to catch up to Alex then looks back at @Adriana, "We can discuss the merits of werecat muscle over a bag of catnip under the moonlit sky one night. Until then, try to keep the girl safe."
Alex wrote: Mon Jan 27, 2020 6:52 pm He rapped his knuckles on Everette’s ankle gesturing to the sprawl that was Merc Town before the pair of intrepid investigators. Softly with a fair amount of determination he whispered to the big juicer, “Somewhere big M is out there. I don’t care if we have to lift every crook, have you turn every trick, talk to every sleezy bag in this awesome town of joy joy. We are going to find him.”
Everett ruffles the @Alex' hair and smiles, "Alright, kid. Lets go get him."
Everett Jackson, Titan Juicer
Everett, Human Titan Juicer
Pace: 10(d8); Parry: 8(1) Toughness: 24(9)
Wounds: 0/3; Fatigue: 0/2; Balitrox's PPE: 5/5
Bennies: 4/3; Internal Repair System: 3/3
Burn: 6/8
