Operation Trainspotting: Close Quarters

Post by High Command »

Operation Trainspotting: Close Quarters
  • Date: Monday, January 1, 110 PA
Time: 1115 by end of post.
Temp: 10°, Bitterly Cold outside. Just started snowing lightly.
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, Only a light dusting of snow and plenty of ice
Ley Line info: There is a ley line running through the AO and no spot is more than one half mile outside the ley line's influence. There is a ley line nexus 3 and a half miles southeast that is the presumed initial destination of the demon army.
Location: Designated AO for Operation Trainspotting, hovering over Waypoint R17CB1. Map Here
The term decimate originates in ancient times and refers not to near total destruction of a force, but rather to destroy one tenth of a force. Such a slaughter is usually enough to break morale, however. Because of this it tends to be a rather effective means of leading to a much greater victory. The 17th SOG had not decimated the forces, but rather had left alive barely 1/20th of the original number. But as that was measured in a thousand or more demons, that did not particularly leave them in a good place. Still, they still held the high ground, had good shooting lines and could funnel the enemy into those lines pretty easily. Still, there were several dozen demons left and not all of the big ones were down - just the really big ones. A group of bull demons and powerful augmented brodkil were surrounded by dozens of Shedim and Brodkil. They were climbing up the walls, coming up the remnants of the stairwells and plain jumping and leaping from one perch to the next. The Brodkil were definitely the stock combat troops of the survivors with Shedim as elite troops moving quickly to stalk the flanks. With the Skelebots the amount of demons in your face is not THAT bad, but it still results in everyone dealing with one shooting at them or attacking them in melee. In addition there are three larger Shedim with demon bone armor that bear the look of officers or specialists.

Enemies: There are 4 Brodkil with Rifles and 4 Shedim with blasters and three tougher shedim (wild cards). The Minions will be replaced each round with an additional 3 of each type showing up for as long as combat takes, minimum two rounds.
Initiative:
  1. Red Joker - Colton
    • Colton can go whenever he wants in the round, even interrupting another character’s action if he wants. In addition, add +2 to all Trait tests this round, and +2 to damage totals as well!
    • All players get a bonus Benny.
  2. Ace of Spades - Brodkil minions in Bone Armor: Toughness in bone armor: 19(8); Parry: 6
    • Maverick and Perry are shot, but between cover the surity of their armor's construction, they are uninjured.
Steelcreek is shot by a Brodkil and is shaken.
  3. Queen of Diamonds - Steelcreek
  4. Ten of Hearts - Maverick
  5. Nine of Spades - Perry
  6. Eight of Diamonds - Bouchard
  7. Six of Diamonds - Frost
  8. Six of Clubs - Shedim Baddasses in Bone Armor: Toughness in Bone Armor: 21 (8); Parry: 8 (#3 took 2 wounds from Colton's Missile)
    • Bouchard is Shaken by a Shedim Badass.
Steelcreek and Colton are hit by glancing blows but are unhurt by Shedim Badasses.
  9. Two of Diamonds - Shedim minions in Flesh Armor: Toughness in Flesh Armor: 18 (7); Parry: 6
    • Frost is missed by a Shedim.
Colton is Shaken by a Shedim.
Bouchard is Shaken and Wounded by a Shedim.
Due to Rewards from the Dramatic Task and from the Joker, all players get three bennies.

Rewards for Artillery and Entrenched Action: Everyone may spend a benny in the first round (in addition to any other benny spending) to gain a +4 bonus to any single roll (damage or trait). Additionally, when you spend that benny, you gain a +4 bonus to any and all soak rolls in that round, in addition to any other bonuses.

Round 1

And now came the wave of demons. There were still plenty of them -- way too many -- but the team had the high ground and cover.

Cassandra found herself taking a glancing hit as a demon blast struck her cover first before her armor soaked it. Still, she was sent onto her back. She got up quickly and focused her mental energy. She cast a wave of fear at her attackers, then she hypercharged her synapses to better her reflexes for shooting.

Unfortunately, such extensive use of her abilities in such a short amount of time, in the presence of so many ley lines, sent fire burning through her brain. Cassandra screamed, and that scream spread out to the minds around her.
Brain Burn
Everyone in LBT around me needs to make a Spirit roll. Failure leaves you Shaken. This can cause a Wound. And I will spend another benny to unshake Cassandra from the brainburn.
From the GM: Steelcreek, Frost, and Perry are in range of Cassandra's Brain Burn

Despite their withering artillery assault there were still more demons than Solene could count Charing at them from across the battlefield. The sheer messiness of their force chilled her to the bone. Humanity is under siege by forces like this all over the world, yet there are those humans who think the Coalition should be stopped. Her mind turns to Free Quebec who sit idly by at times such as these.

As the wave of shock troopers presses in a wave of anger wells up inside of her. They must be stopped. Signalling her skeletons to form a firing position under the cover of a Fallen building, Bouchard rising up from behind another building hitting them with multi-vector fire.

After his stunt taking out the demonic roller tank and a number of equally devilish looking foot soldiers, Raleigh Ray discovered he was pushing himself too hard, too fast. Despite the mechanical muscles of his Death Knight power armor, he was he was feeling the stress and fatigue coming up on him. With much of the enemy totally destroyed and laid to waste upon the streets below, he knew the fight was coming to an end soon. But seeing the Brodkil and bird-men skittering about, climbing the walls of the delapotated buildings, he realized it would not be soon enough for his liking.

"Like roaches in the dark when the lights come on." he mused himself at the sight. "Time ta squash some more roaches... especially those big birdy ones." he finished thinking aloud at the sight of a particularly tough looking Shedim.

But first, a little backup.

Skelebots, relocate to my side of the building. Half of you, provide cover fire on any hostile forces threatening your location, and the other half converge fire on the enemy forces I fire on.

Making use of his power armor's jump jets, Raleigh Ray began to ascend a building making using windows and balconies as split-second hand- and toe-holds, going back and forth as needed to close the distance on his new target; an Elite Shedim along with any Brodkil with the birdish demon.

Once in range and with a clear line of fire, Raleigh Ray let the impressive Shedim have it with an armor piercing Mini-Missile!

note
this should have been posted last quarter, but I got too busy with life to do this.

if you can post your blaze, you can take out the wild cards that aren't gone
core them with your rifle in a perfect shot or something
I'll let you take out a couple minions as well
just have all your wounds overtake you
what will happen is you'll be med-evaced in a coma to Chi-Town and then if you want to use her in some other story later you can
but she'll still blaze out
Dina hasn't been sharing that she has secretly been going above her limits to keep the fight up, taking on wounds in the process.

She fires the last of her ammo to core the remaining Brodkill and Shedim. She slumps over her gun afterwards having taken further wounds in the process, passing into a coma.

Dina is med-evaced to Chi-Town in the aftermath.

End of the Line!

The fighting is fierce and frenetic. Multiple times the squad is overrun, but each time they beat them back. When Dina goes down, Frost calls for a medivac, knowing one had been loitering in the area, but out of reach of the demon forces. It was there Jacob Somerset waited in the converted Skull Patrol car on the jump seat beside the gurney that takes up the back section of the hovercraft. He slaps the window getting the pilot and gunner's attention and signals them to swoop in.

So it is that Somerset's hovercraft touches down moments after the previous one had lifted off with the dogboy who had fallen previously. As he scrambles out of the hover car, the gunner lays down covering fire with the plasma cannon on the roof. Adding his own laser fire to the mix, Somerset and the driver move to remove the wounded soldier. Strapping her to a litter, they carry her to the waiting car. Even as they do, a Shedim rushes them and Somerset must answer the attack somehow. Not for the first time he wishes he had a shoulder mounted weapon like cyborgs sometimes have.

The others find themselves free of the big ones, and with the brodkil and shedim starting to thin out.

Instructions: Give me a paragraph or two of how the end of the battle went for you. Congrats Jacob, you're in the scene! Now get your charge out of there! And start lifesaving procedures once you're airborne! Everyone else, tell me how this ends. Are you surrounded by corpses, have you shot them off the top of the building? Be a bad ass!

Rooftop

Round 0

Cassandra panted. Even in her sealed armor, sweat was running down her face, stinging her eyes, as she fought. She fired her ion rifle and hacked with her armor’s vambraces at the demons, forcing them back, kicking them off the top of the building to take down more of their brethren climbing up the sides.

When Dina went down, Cassandra moved to stand over her. Her head pounded from the effort to constantly improve the abilities of her squad. She boosted Dina’s system to keep her alive as she was grabbed by the med-evac guy.

When Cassandra turned back to the battle, things seemed to have slowed. There seemed to be less demons on the roof, and those that were still there were corpses and had been shoved to the edge to make it even more difficult for the demons to climb onto the roof, and to give the squad cover.

“I think they’re about done!” Cassandra told the others, and then came the whine of another artillery bombardment on the kill zone that seemed to break the demonic assault.

"Cover the medivac!" Bouchard yells to anyone left on the radio. Kicking her thrusters into over drive she grimaces. No missiles left to thin out the rest of the hoard. This was going to come down to guns. If it came down to blades and fists the demons would win. Range and firepower was their advantage. Sweeping toward the medical vehicle she rips into the charging demons from the rear, mowing down a swath of them before screaming low over their heads and setting down behind cover - between them and the medic. From cover she opens fire, kicks in the jets, re-positions, and fires again. She keeps the ammo usage measured and controlled trying to maximize effect while minimizing spend.

Son she's joined by the remnants of her support team setting up a base of fire to keep the demons at bay while the medic works on his charge. Solene fights until her last bullet, only lifting off once the medivac is complete.

There was a scene in a Pre-Rifts movie where a buff human stood in a forest with a big gun and pretended to be a lumberjack, cutting down trees.

Frost was ground level and only fifty meters outside the KZ "kill zone". He had gone fisty cuffs with a brodkil and laid the sub-demon out upon a spike of rusted rebar. When its companion shedim had attempted to level its demonic weapon and erase Frost from the battlefield, was when it realized that the "human refuse" was more than it could handle.

Frost stepped into the shedim, kneeing it with its cyberlimb into its chest. The impact crushed the demon's chest and it lost its grip on the heavy fire breathing weapon. The "human refuse" caught the weapon in one cybered arm and with its other hand caught the demon by the throat. Holding the demon aloft Frost leveled the weapon at the demon's head and let loose a compact plasma fireball. The demon went slack in Frost's grasp and he tossed the demon aside.

Hearing the medivac crew over his comms, Frost comms Pvt Gregg for a status update on the aerial encounters if any. Gregg comms back directly to Frost, that he and @Solène Bouchard are covering the aerial extraction.

Satisfied frost stands atop a collapsed steel and concrete structure and unloads the demon's weapon on its commrades. Demons fall like cut trees, pieces of them going everywhere.

[dice=]The whining alarm of the proximity warning ensures Somerset shifts his attention from the ticker display of patient stats the gurney is feeding into the lower part of his HUD. A glance behind himself at the onrushing Shedim elicits a brief bit of cursing inaudibly under his breath. “We do NOT have time for this.”, he thinks. Clicking over to the bus’ priority circuit he calls out, “Jorje, ugly coming up behind me on your 2 o’clock. Try not to boil our pickup this time.”

As the roof gunner grunts in response and swings the plasma cannon around to his target three things happen nearly simultaneously. First Somerset looks behind them again and with a push of will flings the loose rubble on which the Shedim is running out from under its feet. The creature recovers almost immediately but those few seconds buy precious distance range separation. Next Somerset shouts, “DOWN!”, as he drops to one knee and shields the patient’s body with his own, his pickup partner doing likewise in the unthinking harmony only hundreds of hours of boring drills can produce. Finally the rooftop gunner unleashes his cannon on the Shedim.

Despite the extra distance gained and the low crouch the temperature alarms in Somerset’s armor screech in protest as the stream of plasma screams over his back; thoroughly roasting the Shedim before moving on to other targets. “MOVE!”, Somerset shouts as he and the driver spring to their feet carrying their charge to the safety of the waiting bus. With a burst of strength Jacob racks the gurney into the bus’ “meat rack” and jumps in after it while the driver sprints to the cockpit and the hover car lifts off above the battlefield and toward the nearest field hospital. Eyeing the myriad displays of patient data in the back of the ambulance Somerset takes a brief moment to appreciate the variety and severity of his patient’s wounds.

Laying a hand on the dying soldier’s chest and fighting off the fatigue of the telekinesis he leans down and whispers into her ear, “Hope you don’t mind if I spoil your plans to die a glorious death in battle today. I’m going to need you to fight just a little bit more to stay alive okay?” Seeing the worst of her internal wounds beginning to close as her unconscious mind responds to the push, Somerset sets about using more conventional means to stitch the rest of her back together. Who knows, maybe she’ll even come out of this with all her original parts. Stranger things happen these days.

Frost pushes comms to the medevac bus, @Jacob Somerset "We have you covered. Get @Dina Perry Perry out of here."

Moving comms over the medevac to team freq, @Steelcreek "Steel, we need an egress point for an LZ. South of our current location."

Using his built in sensors, Frost scans the field before him, not for Shedim and Brodkil, but for his other charges.

Raleigh Ray found it nearly impossible to fully ascend the building he was by. Highest he ever managed to get was halfway up. The Shedim and Brodkil did the vicinity hounded him at every turn. Even with the jump Jets of his power armor Ozark boy was confounded by the demons' ability to match his pace.

With a lateral jet-assisted jump to an adjacent building Raleigh Ray finally managed to get enough distance to use the last of his mini missiles. The resulting blast sent chunks of demon flesh and concrete raining down to the dilapidated streets below.

Then suddenly a voice caught his attention over the radio.
Solène Bouchard wrote: Sat Oct 19, 2019 6:27 am "Cover the medivac!" Bouchard yells to anyone left on the radio.
Colton's eyes turned and he found himself looking at the body of his compatriot and sister-in-arms.

"Dina..."

For a brief second is mind went to a memory of his sister, who Dina often reminded him of. Her broken body. The helplessness in her eyes. The blood and slaughter of so may he knew and loved that day so many days ago.

That flash of memory nearly got him killed. In that split-second of distraction the demons moved in and attacked en mass! As Colton clung to the side of the building, a pair of Shedim and God knows how many of their Brodkil minions blindsided him.

As if one tangled mess, they all plummeted to the ground below, landing with a crash and a billowing plume of dust.

Despite the slow trickle of blood Colton that noticed running down the side of his head, he got lucky. His hefty Death Knight power armor landed on two of the Brodkil foot soldiers, crushing their bodies like watermelons at a Gallagher concert. The squish of their bodies cushioned his fall, taking much of force of their landing.

As quickly as he could get to his feet again Raleigh Ray poised himself to resume the battle. but the demons were quicker to recover as well... that is those that were not reduced to a grimy, slimy, bonemeal paste from the fall. Colton tried to blast them and get a little distance with his particle beam rifle, but quickly discovered its power cable had been slashed free by one of the bird demons during their ambush a moment ago.

Without a second's hesitation, Raleigh Ray's heavy skull sword came out, yanked from its scabbard within the power armor's heavy shield. The glint tof alloyed steel took the Demons by surprise, rolling the head of the first of the two Shedim bird demons. The trupe of demons was stunned at the sight. Colton pressed his momentary advantage and attacked like a berzerker possessed by a savage spirit animal.

Raleigh Ray battled on, but the demons' numerical advantage was just too much for one man to overcome. His armor was slashed, bashed, and blasted to ribbons, and still he fought on. The mechanical sword-swinging arm was torn from his armor's shoulder, and still he fought on.

Finally Raleigh Ray Colton managed to get a little distance and stared down the remaining demons. In that pause the shedim leader glared at Colton and managed to say. "... just die already we have you outnumbered ..."

Tired and exhausted Colton smiled beneath the mask of his death knight armor and replied. "When will you demonic scum ever learn? We are NEVER outnumbered!"

"Death From Above...now."

At first the demon looked confused but then noticed a shadow looming over head. He looked up with his bird like head just in time to see several Skelebots raining down! One by one, the mechanical soldiers descended from above, landing with computer precision on the heads of each of the demon soldiers to deadly effect.

The Shedim was both confused and panicked. And in his moment of indecision and distraction, Raleigh Ray ran up and smashed his head in with his power armor's heavy skull shield.

"Copy good. Workin' on dat now." Raleigh Ray answered, trying not to let his breathy exhaustion affect the clarity of his speech too bad. Off the radio he added, "... right after I throw up."

Before moving out, he wanted to regroup what little he could. "Skelebots, status report." As the robotic soldiers beamed him their operational conditions one by one in turn, Raleigh Ray managed to salvage the sword from his power armored rent arm and managed to get it back in its shield-scabbard, and then grabbed the arm itself for later reattachment.

"Establish a defensive perimeter here and assist any nearby C.S. personnel requesting help. I'll be back soon." he beamed to the Skelebots under his control with a thought through his command implant.

Once on the move, Colton went to the last place he recalled seeing Phillips; the rooftop they were initially assigned. He needed to gain some altitude anyways to interface with more stray and errant Skelebots, so it seemed a good place to start. With his armor damaged, Colton felt it prudent to take the stairs up, using his armor's jump jets only occasionally when needed. Despite being spent, Raleigh Ray put a little hustle in his step. As he assended he tried to raise Phillips on the radio.

"Hillbilly One to Hillbilly Two. Do you read me, Phillips?"

After he emerged from the building, having reached the roof, he started to shout. "Philips?!? You still up here?!?

As he searched the roof for his missing wingman, Raleigh Ray multi-tasked and started signaling to all Skelebots in the area that were either unassigned or presently masterless due to unfortunate events on the battlefield. All untasked units, rendezvous at the following coordinates for regrouping and retasking. Those coordinates being where his team of Skelebots were establishing their defensive perimeter.

Post by Steelcreek »

Steelcreek fires his last round of silver buckshot, thanking the dead for noise dampeners. He slings the shotgun and draws the Ozark Special, the insane, Frankenstein mash-up pistol born of the incomparable mechanical mind of @Raleigh Ray Colton. He keeps firing, but the laser has significantly less impact than the silver did.

His radio crackles with the news: Perry is down. Then @Kaihauta Frost's voice comes in, telling Steelcreek to find a point of egress. Okay. Job to do. Squad needs their scout.

Meanwhile, there are demons who have other plans. Two or three come at Steelcreek on that floor, and he can smell more above and below. This is all... less than idea.

The Ozark Special hums as he lets loose with another blast or two. Hums with excess power... he could use that. Colton was going to kill him, but he could use it.

He retreats behind cover and grabs the pistol. With a few quick adjustments, a high explosive grenade and some duct tape, he has what he needs. "Fire in the hole!" he yells out of habit; there's no one on this floor but him and bird-looking demons.

With a jarring explosion, the wall blows out, raining rubble down on the corpses and the unlucky few still living below. Steelcreek activates his jet pack and moves out, letting his vibro-axe drop into his hand while he scouts. Better than nothing, if I get any more close encounters.

"Eliminating threats, sir," Stephen replies simply to @Kaihauta Frost.

In truth, Stephen was busy wracking up an impressive body count. Preferring close combat, he used his hammer and shield to cover Colton's six. An occasional point blank particle beam blast punctuated the hammer thumps as Stephen tenderized any demon who got a little too close.

'This hammer ain't that great. Too big. The rifle sucks too. Big boom but can't hit shit in the mix. Better find somethin' else'

As focused as he was on fighting, Stephen ended up separated from Colton. He looked around to see him falling from a nearby building. Things looked pretty grim, but Colton received air support before Stephen could rush over. Approaching his teammate, Stephen tosses his own particle beam rifle to Colton.

Stephen tells @Raleigh Ray Colton, "I don't need it. And sorry I lost you back there. Anything gets too close, I'll handle 'em. You get 'em as they come in, bud. Sorry 'bout your friend.

With his teammate secured, Stephen waits impatiently for the next enemy to show its ugly face.

Over team freq, Frost reitterates his instructions.

"Cover your buddy's six. We wait on @Steelcreek locate our LZ. Turn over every skelebot to @Raleigh Ray Colton."

"Once Gregg and @Solène Bouchard have secured the medivac from the current mess, we will extract."

"I am heading towards @Cassandra Maverick's last position."

"Now is the time to find suitable equipment to hold out till extraction. The cursed demon's have decent gear." to emphasize there is a screeching charge, a thrumming pulse of energy, and then the satisfying thump as Frost fires off a borrowed demon rifle. likely some plasma ejector. There is no sound from the demon that had his head engulfed.

The radio freq goes silent as Frost begins moving towards MAverick's last known/recorded position.

Flipping to personal comms, " @Stephen Phillips Ozark Two. Glad you are still with us."

Post by High Command »

The team covers the skelebots and all personnel retreating to their respective transports, they hear the whine of a Death's Head Transport. They also see it is not a transport, but a rare gunship version - likely loaded with bombs! As the squad and their skelebots evacuate the area, they watch in awe as the entire area is flattened by enough ordinance to literally bury anything unlucky enough to survive. Their transports are actually peppered with shrapnel, but nothing threatening. Using optics, they can see the dust beginning to clear on a new flat spot in the ruins of Old Chicago. Some time later, they land back at the hanger and are sent through extensive decontamination procedures. They all end up turning in all of their gear and changing even their uniforms and underwear; Their personal items are collected in bins to be decontaminated or discarded and replacements given. One of the techs just throws away Colton's dip, but hands him a new can and a cup (wiht a sponge already in it) with a sly grin.

So it is that the team (not including Somerset) finds themselves in individual rooms with computer interface, a water dispenser, and a padded bench. A prompt on the screen asks them: "Please give a full accounting of the battle in your own words."

Once the accounting is recorded (and you have the opportunity to rerecord it as much as you need), a buzzing sound is heard in the hall and within ten minutes a hot meal (pot roast, mashed potatoes, canned veggies, rolls, with choice of coffee, tea, or five chi-cola flavors: cola, lemon-lime, orange, root beer, or cherry) is brought to them on disposable plates, and with disposable flatware, so they can eat. If tea or coffee is requested, a thermos is left. If Chi-Cola is requested, three cans of choice are left. The private delivering the meal hits something outside and a trash can slides out from the wall. "Toss your trash in there." He informs the recipient. If they got a thermos, he adds. "Leave your thermos on the bench when you leave." He hits something else and a controller and keyboard slides out from the wall. "You can play games or watch anything in the library until everyone is done. Nothing is really recent, but it's still good." The most recent thing in the library is a movie that came out in November (it's January).

By the time all is done, it is 1500. You are then let out of the rooms and led to a single room with tables and chairs.

Instructions: Post your debrief, and once everyone is done, we'll have some post operation chatter and I'll move us forward. You don't hear anyone else's debrief. It's video so no worries about any literacy issues. Feel free to leverage this information for your after briefing wait. If everyone is posted by the 15th, I will add one benny to everyone's total when the new mission starts.

@Jacob Somerset finds himself on a similar path when he returns. Both he, his team, and his patient are put through a significant decontamination regimen, though it is much more expedited than that of their soldier peers. Once he hands off his patient to the trauma team, he is then sent to record his own post mission debriefing (same as above).

Upon entering his debriefing room, Raleigh Ray Colton wasted no time i cracking open the can of dip that was so graciously provided for him by the sympathetic supply sergeant. "God bless that man."

After getting comfortable in an uncomfortable chair, Colton prepared himself to make his debriefing statements for the video camera. With dip in his upper cheek and spit-cup ready to go in his off hand, he began.

"Fo' this operation I was teamed up with the new guy, Phillips. Together we were designated Team Ozark. Phillips and me were dispatched ta a rooftop, where we were ta set up demo charges ta drop the building in the path o' our unwelcome guests. Make ourselves a nice happy kill-box.

That part o' da operation went pretty smooth. It was after dat, dat things went all hairy an' sideways. Turned out the demon army from Hell had a lil' bit more in store fo' us than just pitchforks an' hellfire. Seems to me that Hell managed to modernize its shit!

Taking the initiative, I descended upon da enemy making use o' my deployment o' skelebots ta cover my ass, providin' support an' cover fire as needed from their position up above. Thanks in part ta the Death Knight power armor you boys were so kind to lend me, I was able to make sort work o' those motherfuckers. I'm not sure what my kill count was, but I do know I was able to take out numerous foot soldiers an' at least one o' their heavy armored vehicles.

Overall I believe my team was successful in puttin' the kibosh on the invasion... or at least this round o' troop movements. Unfortunately it was not a clean sweep. There were casualties on our side too. Luckily my partner, Phillips, was not among them, despite us gettin' separated.

End report."

With his debriefing report completed and filed, Raleigh Ray enjoyed his serving of meat and potatoes. After a day like today, it could have been shoe leather and dust bunnies on a plate; it would still taste like a meal fit for a king! The simple Ozark boy took his sweet time eating, savoring and relishing every bite, as only a man who recently escaped death could.

After, armed with a trio of orange flavored Chi-Colas, he turned on the TV and began watching a mini-marathon of the show Witch Hunt. While one would think he had seen enough death and violence for one day, Raleigh Ray had become inured to it all. While he didn't realize it, the simple, innocent boy from the Ozark Mountains had become a hardened soldier. Borne again in the blood and fire of combat against the truly nightmarish inhuman plague that fastened over the land.

Steelcreek polishes off his second bottle of Chi-Cola and nibbles at the meat on his plate while he thinks over his report.

“Well, we arrived at the target location and set up the kill zone, as planned. The corporal and I called in concentrated fire on their hard targets while the rest of the squad kept them penned in. It worked out pretty well at first.”

Steelcreek sucks his teeth a little before continuing. “But even with most of their big guns down, there were a lot of those critters. They swarmed us, and we got separated. Perry got overrun. I shot so many of em that I ran out of silver and had to demo my way through a wall to rendezvous with the rest of the unit. Even our power armor troopers had their hands full dealing with the press.”

I ate well, though, he thinks. Of course, he knows better than to say that last part out loud.

“After that, medivac came for Perry, got her out of there, and the corporal ordered me to find us a way out. We evacked, the bombers came in, and we were on our way back here.”

He thinks on it a minute, and continues, “hard to say much else, except that I don’t think they expected us to hit them how we did. I’ve seen predators turn to panic when they realize there’s a bigger hunter in the same territory; there’s a look they get. These demons, they had the look of creatures who don’t expect to be prey.”

Round 0

Cassandra went through decom as almost a zombie, her head pounding so hard. She didn’t even remember to blush when she was stripped and unceremoniously sprayed down. When she was put into debrief, she sank down onto the padded bench in the basic clothing she had been given after decom. She just wanted to lie down.

“I don’t suppose I could get some ibuprofen?” she asked, rubbing her temples.

Cassandra started in on the debriefing. She tried to sit up straight and enunciate, but weariness and migraines left her sagging and wanting to just lie down on the bench.

“We arrived at the designated location and proceeded to successfully plant the demo charges that would bring down two buildings in front and behind the demonic army,” she explained. “After they were trapped, we rained heavy fire down on them and called in artillery support. We managed to take out their heavy guns, but there were a lot of demons. They tried to storm our positions. I maintained psychic enhancement and support of my fire team, as well as returning fire.

“Now can I please get something for these migraines…”

The drugs came in with the meal. She ate what she could and drank root beer before finding some soothing music on the entertainment screen to pass the time while she just lay on the bench with her arm over her eyes. She dozed a bit before she was finally released back to barracks, where she slept like the dead.
