Chapter Two: Lost Angels

Post by Venatus Vinco »

After trapping the Fallen known as Cezary in an abandoned factory a group of heroes, emboldened by conviction and faith, managed to drive the demon from his host. Saving the man and saving the day.

In the meantime, Brandon and Peter, took a group a nearly dead captives - rescued from the jaws of death - to a nearby homeless shelter. They had been locked in the freezer for days and fed just enough to live but were now free. Apparently Cezary enjoyed fresh food.

Lives were saved but also ruined.

The host - Stan Brodenick - remembered everything he did. And the victims remember his face. The resultant trial was bizarre. Ultimately, Stan would use the criminal insanity defense. Given what he’d been through it would probably work.

And there was still the matter of Lilith.

Card Draw [dice:2qtgvahq]59227:0[/dice:2qtgvahq] = Spade: Quite Contemplation

Ken steps over a gnarled root as he walks the trails of a park not far from campus. He doesn't get a lot of free time these days, but when he does - or neglects something to make some - he always finds a little solace walking the unpaved paths through the woods. It helps him calm his mind and nerves that are so often frayed here in the city of angels.

Hmph...The city of Angels... if I had known how literal that would turn out for me, I would have accepted the offer to OSU.

Ken trudges along, contemplating the changes in his life since coming to LA. He would never have considered his life simple growing up in San-Fransico. His mother had pushed him hard to be the best at everything. Theater, chess, wrestling, on top of the normal academics. She had been just as insistent that he succeed at USC, and his course load and extra curricular had seemed and Herculean burden at the time. But now.... he would give anything to just be a student with a crushing amount of homework again.

Why me?. His thoughts always came back around to that same question. Sure, he went to church growing up. His parents were both devout catholics, but he attended more out of obligation than any real belief. He hadn't been to mass since his freshman year. Why would an angel choose him to be..what, some kind of battle prophet?

"Passing on your left" jolts Ken from his thoughts. He spins around, instinctively reaching for his kamas tucked into his waist beneath his coat. He halts as he sees a jogger approaching. The fit, middle aged man gives Ken the side eye as he passes, clearly wondering why the asian boy freaked out at such simple phrase.

Ken sighs and focuses on calming his rapid heart. Ever since he realized what was really out there, every rustle in the dark, every creak of an old house has put him on edge. He steps to the right, making sure the jogger has space to pass and continues slowly behind him. He looks longingly at the oblivous man.

What I wouldn't give to be like that. No idea about some battle between heaven and hell. No compulsion to to 'help the forces of good'....ignorance really is bliss...

Look stared at his laptop the words not forthcoming. His lip cureled and he looked around his seedy flat. The refrigerator door hung agape, and the AC unit had fallen out of the window his third day in. The wall’s paint were peeling and must have been paper thin. He could always hear people fucking like rabbits. Apparently The city of Angels had a rent problem as well as a demon one. At least he had wifi.

In a huff and scruff he packed his things and piled into a cab taking a quick sojourn to the Golden Dragon Chinese food eatery. He had not been back to the office of late, seeing @Peter Dunn only reminded him of what they did to Lilith. Mrs. Woo was an old crotchety Asian woman who owned the restrunt and always had a table available for a fellow conspiracy theorist.

The ambiance, smell, and even red and gold colors made Luke more at ease than his dingy apartment ever did. He was a regular now, and could even keep track of the days by the soup they were serving. Warm, hot and sour soup... Must be Tuesday. He slowly lapped up the warm broth savoring the hint of ginger and thinly sliced shiitake mushrooms. Even the green onions on top were a nice delicate touch. He pulled out his laptop and cracked his neck beginning to write... He wrote of the demons that lurk in the dark and the people that use them to harm your every day citizen. His daily Blog, Good Morning Meets the Devil, was a well read hit that depicted the worst of humanity preying on the good every day Joe Blow. His latest post illustrated what happened when your’s truly risked his life to stop a motley crew of would be contact killers from stringing up the innocent in a meat packing plant.

[dice:2becjgtt]59229:0[/dice:2becjgtt]

That was when his anger welled up and sake went down. Anger for what these new people did to him. After about two hours of writing his angry thoughts onto his blog, he without fault sent two seperate emails. One to his musketeer ally @Simon and another to Peg leg jack, @Tyler Puckett. Each day it might have different exploitive content depending on his level of anger, sometimes it even had a picture of an old prothetic leg being humped by a dog. Or maybe other days a link to a video with a woman dirty playing with a flint lock musket. Either way the content boiled down to a singular driven messege... Where is Lilith? Where is my wife?”

About 2pm was when he went of the rails in a barely contained drunken rage, wildly swinging his coveted award he kept in his pack at patrons of the Golden Dragon. Most folks thought it was funny seeing the second most famous blogger make a mockery of him self, but Mrs Woo knew better. She and her husband long ago had fallen mercy to a demon, she like Luke lost someone, and so her patience was infinite and her hospitality always welcoming each and every day. By the time Luke got so out of hand and drunk with Sake Mrs Woo asked him one question each day, ”Who I call for you?”

Luke would look up each day loathing with self pity and criminal remorse. Between his angry sobs he muttered the name of his best friend and most hated villain... @Peter Dunn!

Tianshi is more than a bit concerned by what she has gotten herself into by agreeing to come to America. The language barrier is enough to give her some serious concern. Trying to understand the other Hunters was almost as infuriating as the standoff in the reitoko ... freezer.

She uses what limited English she has to try and communicate that she does not understand anything other than following Fallen. When she talks to @Renata Hodges she seems all caught up in her book work. And @Ken Lang who seems to be oriental, maybe Chinese, just stares at her blankly when she tries and describes her problem.

For a few weeks she struggles, intentionaly avoiding the Jilted. Just being near them makes her hair stand on end, but the need for tech savvy help overrules her distrust. Tianshi approaches @Luke Morningstar and then @Tyler Puckett.

Luke seemed to have resources available or at least an extensive knowledge base. She tapped his tablet and motioned with her hand for verbal communication. His translator software was ideal. If she could get a portable unit herself she wouldn't need to constantly seek a live person to do it for her. The cost of hiring a translator would bankrupt her for sure. Not entirely certain how they would handle the Fallen. Better to save humanity than to feed another human to the appetite of the Fallen.

Once she had the smartphone, Luke had helped her purchase, she went to see Tyler. Asking about modified throat mic and a concealed ear piece. Tapping into Tyler's former connections with the police and SWAT, she was able to get what she needed at a fairly reasonable price. Her only concern now was what the others of the Hunters would do. Tianshi did not have the money to fund everyone for a similar setup.

Works on something...
Brandon always found he enjoyed working with his hands. He was an average mane in many ways, and one of those was the way he always was able to relax in physical work.

To this day he was still taken aback at some of the horrors he saw in life. He prefered to keep focused and do what he needed. But sometimes it took a little time and energy to work it through in his head.

Working on this cabnet was like that, his wife had wanted to remodel for a while and he had the skills. Heck they even had the money since he could do most the work. But every time he would get busy, well as it happened things cleared up. Now with a couple weeks of down time he could give her a gift she wanted.

Amber was visiting her mom in Kentuky, enjoying some family time. So he decided this was perfect. A perfect gift for a perfect wife. As he worked at carving the roases on the lathe he was careful. He knew he could have just run out to Home Depot and grabbed some, but he wanted the quality, and love of hand crafted for his wife. Everything in this house was something he had done for her, and he would not take the easy route now.

When he was fianlly finished he looked around, cleaning the house. Amber was coming home tomorrow and he wanted everything perfect. He would meet her at the airport, bring her home and let her relax and unwind. A little time to give the kids bathes and she would want to tell him all about her trip.

This, this was what made life worth living.

card draw[dice:2gqntpfn]59421:0[/dice:2gqntpfn] Four of Clubs I think, assuming the suits are in the order listed in the book. A bit of both Downtime and Backstory I think.

* * * * *

Peter is doing something he has not done before, he has flown to Las Vegas. He has been bothered about these powers he has, why is he not getting better at using them? Is it just a lack of practice, or something else?

So why is he here? He has a power that lets him move small objects, so what better way to test it than moving dice or roulette balls in a casino? Besides, he has always been the poor one, Luke had all the wealth and fame, he was just the research assistant. If he can master using this power, then he can win big.

He hits the first casino and begins. He finds that the Polterghiests to not understand things like written numbers, he can not tell them to land a ball or dice on a specific number directly. He can, however, tell them to put the ball at a specific point he is concentrating on...if he can keep his focus on the slot he wants to win. Similarly, he can tell them to put a specific side up.

He soon figures out what he has been doing wrong with his use of magic. It is not a matter of concentration really, it is a matter of belief. He has to have faith that what he wills to happen shall indeed happen. Yes, he needs to focus on what he wants, but that is how and not why. No matter how he concentrates, if he does not believe it will happen, then it will not.

He finds, however, that it is not satisfying to win this way. He could easily break the bank, but what is the point? The fact is, he is a fair hacker and a decent investigator. If he wanted to steal money or get it through illicit means, he could have done so long ago.

He tosses the chips on a random number and lets things fall as they will. Ironically enough he wins. He cashes out at the casino and leaves. He soon realizes that he is being followed. Someone is not happy with big winners and sent thugs after him to get the money back (or so he assumes...it may just be someone out to rob a big winner).

The money, at this point, does not matter to Peter...and he is mentally tired. There are limits to his magic and he has reached them.

He turns into one of the numerous churches and (while the followers are watching), puts most of the money into the collection box.

They leave him alone when he exits, probably he no longer has enough money to interest them. He does have enough money to stop by one of the legal brothels. He discovers that empty sex is not really satisfying to him either. What he envied on Luke was not so much his wealth or having a beautiful woman to warm his bed, it was the ability to be successful through his own efforts and the happiness of his life.

Lilith broke that dream for both of them. Luke no longer has that life, and Peter will never get that kind of life from his powers because his power is hollow. It comes not from his efforts, but from others doing for him.

What Peter wants now is to make things right, and the only way to do that is to find Luke's wife and get her free from Lilith. He will likely die after because he sees no reason to live once Lilith is defeated. It does not matter, Lilith has taken away meaning from Peter's life. All that is left is trying to make things right...and revenge on the one who took everything away.

Simon's phone chimes, and he looks down at it. Another message from @Luke Morningstar. Don't look at it. You know better. Don't look... it's just going to be more weird musketeer porn, or another stupid cartoon drawing... just don't look.

He does look, though, against his better judgment, and he hurls his phone across the room when he sees it.

That ungrateful jackass! Simon stews. I saved his life! I got myself Marked and then stuck on this idiotic assignment for months, MONTHS, because I saved his life. It doesn't matter how much he sees or how many times I explain it, he still thinks we did something to make his pretty, virtuous wife turn into a harlot of hell. Damn if I'm not sick of it.

Simon is by himself, of course, in his flat. He doesn't invite other people here; too many people know where it is without him bringing in even more.

His phone buzzes again, from across the room. It's a distinctive buzz: two long buzzes followed by a single short one.

Lovely. This is all I need, he thinks as he wanders over and grabs the phone. It's still in one piece, thankfully, and he lets out a long sigh as he reads the text.

It's from his Benefactors. And they have a new target. Apparently a minor Fallen, who is in the open at right that moment, in fact. Simon puts out his cigarette, slips on his jacket, and heads for the door, feeling the comfortable weight of his weapons settle around him.

Not like I was doing anything productive, he muses, and probably better to go put some lead in a bad guy than in that idiot Luke's face. And then he's out the door, hunting shadows and trying to forget the latest disturbing image sent directly to him from L.A.'s second most famous blogger.

(Reply to Luke)
Peter's life has not changed much since his being transformed into...OK, what is he? A Witch, a Sorcerer, a Warlock? He does not really know anymore.

Whatever he is, on the SURFACE, his life has not changed. He still lives in a trailer court, he still works late doing research on his computer. He still almost never has a date.

That is the surface. There are a lot of differences below the surface. He sometimes goes flying at night as an owl or bat. He sometimes uses magic as a plunger to fix clogged drains. Inside, he agonizes over whether believing in his spirit allies and trusting in their aid is the same as worshiping spirits or demons.

Does he owe Luke? No, not really, but he still comes to get him when he calls. Luke is lost in his hurt, wallowing in his loss. He needs to do something constructive to get out of the hole he was thrown in, rather than digging himself deeper. Until he takes steps to do that, all Peter can do is be a friend.

Tyler was finally satisfied that he has accomplished something. One of those hellish creatures was taken down and several people were even saved. It was unfortunate that a man's life was destroyed, but this world ain't perfect and bad shit happens to people. At least this way, there was less bad going around.

Tyler spent the majority of his time honing his new trade. Sure, he had some interruptions. @Luke Morningstar insisted upon sending him lewd and obscene emails while the Japanese girl (@Tianshi) wouldn't get off Tyler's case about getting her some police-grade comms from the LAPD. That one wasn't terribly difficult, but it cost him a couple favors to some old friends on the force. They scratch Tyler's back and he scratches theirs and all.

The library contained a wealth of information. With the confirmed identity of two fallen, Cezary and Lillith, Tyler was able to dig deep and discover patterns: which authors knew what they were writing about, common weaknesses of the fallen, and more. He spent time learning new tricks and began habitually stocking up on items that might be effective in a tight spot.

Finally, Tyler spent some time reconnecting with religion. He didn't know what God's plan was, but it couldn't hurt to try to be a little bit better of a person and believe in something bigger than himself. Not to mention that it could be useful for Tyler to be on a first-name basis with a bonafide Catholic priest now that he'd taken up fallen hunting.

After a few weeks of going about their business, things begin to shift for the group. @Luke Morningstar has begun to make a name for himself on the dark web. Every day he gets private messages, some of them too crazy to be true and others too crazy not to be. A large loyal fan base is out there pinging him anytime suspected Fallen activity occurs...and his inbox is overflowing. One message catches his eye however, it is a picture of Lilith in an Asian grocery store in Van Nuys.

@Simon is out on another job when the text comes from the society. Opening the attachment reveals some startling information, the Fallen known as Cezary is known to the Order and was banished and imprisoned forever in hell in the 18th century. It is very rare for Fallen to escape imprisonment once they are there they must be specifically summoned by a powerful being. Very few such beings are known to walk the Earth anymore.

Likewise @Tyler Puckett does his homework. Most priests he talks to consider him somewhat mentally ill. He kinds only those from the global south seem to take his stories of fallen beings seriously. Eventually he begins regular visits with Fr. Luis, a Columbian born priest who recently immigrated to America. He seems clued into what’s going on and even has a few contacts who keep him up to date on the state of the world. Fr. Luis manages to get Tyler a few books that aren’t available in any library, one which traces the origins of many Fallen through human mythology. It is fascinating and will help identify the weakness and types of Fallen he encounters. @Tianshi hangs around Tyler, learning some basic English while he does his research. She has no where else to go and becomes sort of a permanent house guest in Tyler’s cramped apartment.

When @Peter Dunn returns from Vegas he feels a pull. The spirits he wrestles with inside of him are feeling pulled toward the Van Nuys district. No doubt the are been drawn back to their source. Peter almost feels compelled to go there.

@Ken Lang, @Renata Hodges, and @Brandon Meyers all feel a strong craving for Chinese food at the Golden Dragon. They arrive almost simultaneously and see Luke drunk in a corner raving about a recent conspiracy theory.

Peter has put most of the others on his cell phone and starts calling them when he feels the pull. If he is being drawn either Lilith is there, or someone bound to Lilith who is powerful enough to draw others similarly bound. He calls the ones he has and will leave a message if they do not answer, "Something is drawing me to what I think is a place somewhere in Van Nuys. I will let you know ore when I get close."

If his phone as a GPS, he turns it on so the others can find him, if he is unable to respond.

Peter reasons that, if he can sense the pull, whoever is pulling can probably sense him as well...especially if he uses his magic. He avoids using his magic, hoping he will be harder to detect that way.

When he reaches the area he is drawn to, he investigates, checking out for escape routes, alarms, traps, and the possibility that others are under the influence of Lilith.

If possible, he will call the others again to inform them where he is.

Tianshi does have her former classmate connection that she does check in with periodically. But the former cop @Tyler Puckett seems to be the most knowledgable about the are of Los Angeles.

When Tyler heads out after things in Van Nujys and they arrive at the Golden Dragon, she has mixed feelings. There is something warming and familiar about the restuarant and something alien, evil, and foreign as well. She does her best to manage on her own ordering a meal and keeping her senses up and about her.

As he walks in an sees @Luke Morningstar, Meyer's desire for Chinese fades. This is one of the guys from the warehouse. So something is going to happen here. He looks around the restaurant wondering what is going on. This would be a bad time for trouble, he had a pocket knife on him. But his sword and his shotgun where locked in the truck.

Walking over to Luke he nods to the others who have already arrived and takes a seat in a chair next to him. "You seem excited about something Luke. Want to start at the beginning for us?"

Simon gets the text from @Peter Dunn right on the heels of the text from the Society, and he groans out loud. Never a dull moment. What I wouldn't give for a dull moment right about now.

He sends Peter a text back with a single word: "Wait." He doesn't expect the guy will wait, though. Nobody waits, really.

He slides on his jacket, which is super comfortable because it's only about 110 degrees outside, and he heads off to find Peter, mulling over what he learned from the society.

Who would've wanted to pull Cezary out of hell? Who would even be able to? And why go through all the trouble?

If he gets an opportunity to do so before bullets and blades take over, he will inform the rest of the party of the contents of the text from the Society.

It had been three weeks and still nothing to show for it, no sign of my wife. Yeah she was still my wife, I had to save her from whatever she had been turned into.

There is only so much that Sizzeling fried rice noodle soup can do for the soul. The book was fucking wrong sometimes you needed people called Serbius649 or Re-emerging_Dildo43 to do the dirty work. The dark web was not for the faint of heart. It was full of peg leg and musketeer porn plenty. Enjoy the newest pics @Tyler Puckett and @Simon.

Luke stopped eating his soup long enough to give the patrons an interesting if not vulgar stare. Sometimes around now the Asian barista with a long sword would come by with her gobbely gook. He shrugged clearly not realizing she was at the table. Maybe she has to make a double whip whip no soy vanilla latte with two extra shots of expresso for some soccer mom.Today he did not give his usual demon’s are Umong us sermon. Today was a working day. Last night at 2am Re-emerging_Dildo43 had sent Luke the photo of a grocery store in Van Nuys... Lilith was in it! The master blogger cracked his neck and turned on his tablet. His fingers worked their magic using tweets and in the era of Yelp everything was rated. He just need to find out if this place was 5 or 1 Star.

Common Kn for the location of the [dice:2s0hwsxi]60006:0[/dice:2s0hwsxi] wild[dice:2s0hwsxi]60006:1[/dice:2s0hwsxi] ace [dice:2s0hwsxi]60006:2[/dice:2s0hwsxi]

He looked up at @Brandon Meyers barely acknowledging his presence. How long has this guy been here? Luke was intently staring at his tablet reading what he needed. He nodded with a half a smile and signed out. He grabbed his jacket with his coveted award sticking halfway out of its pocket and tablet then looked at the demon hunter with eyes that said it was time to go, ”It’s time to leave. Get your food to go we need to get to Van Nuys. I got the address of a little Asian grocery store with 3 stars, but my wife is there. That night we ran into you I was only there because I need to find out how those bastards turned her into a monster. Yeah I know the three douchebags that I was with had something to do with making her... I have to find her and bring her back to me. You in or do you want to fiddle some more with your chop sticks?” As Luke left he flipped on his phone e-mailing pgeon service to deliver notes with the address throughout the city to the rest of the so called hunters. He chuckled wondering if Tyler could even read. It also dawns on him about this time B had brought a few associates with him. He shrugged figuring they probably had something to do with his wife being turned into a demon. The more he could expose the closer he was to getting her back.

Its time to bring everyone face to face with this shit and see whose face falls off... Hopefully Peter’s... Speaking of the devil looks like he is already on his way to Van Nyus.

Ken steps off the bus on the corner of North Broadway and Alpine. He finishes his Monster - an ironic choice of energy drink considering his knowledge of such things - as he walks the last block to the Golden Dragon. He tosses the drink in the recycling can on the edge of the sidewalk and steps up to the door of the golden dragon. He steps forward to open the door, and as he pulls it open Luke pushes past in a rush, followed closely by Brandon.

"What the...What are you guys doing here...." Ken starts. Then the realization dawns on him as he notices that his craving food - which was never really a food craving - is suddenly gone.

"Damnit! And I would have sworn I was just in the mood for some chow mien!" Ken looks up at the sky in frustration. "It's one thing to give me compulsions I can't ignore, but doing it through fake cravings... isnt that a little deceptive for your team?" He says, addressing the heavens before him.

Without waiting for answer, Ken rolls his eyes and rushes to catch up with the two who had just left the restaurant. "You all are clearly heading somewhere with a purpose....want to fill me in?"

When they give him the lowdown, Ken chimes in. "O, you mean the 99 Ranch Market? Yeah I know the place. Some of my friends from school - you know, the ones who are chinese in more than just looks - have mentioned it. Supposedly it has a stuff that you can't find for miles around."

As they ride in the truck, a thought occurs to Ken. Unless this Lilith just got a hankering for some pocky - which Ken seriously doubted - then this store might be more than what it seems. If so they'd probably want to avoid suspicion, which is exactly what two two white guys walking up and down the aisles of an Pan-asian market would draw. Especially two as unusual as Luke and Brandon.

I can't belive I'm suggesting this but...

"Hey uh... once we arrive, how about you let me take a look around a bit first. I uh...how do put this politely... blend in a bit more than you guys will, if you know what I mean?"

Stealth 13
If we get that far and it makes sense, Ken is going to try and discretely make his way around the store, keeping his eye out for anything unusually and, if he can, take a couple peeks in a back rooms (though not enter them)

Tyler arrives at the Golden Dragon with @Tianshi. He orders a bowl of egg drop soup to be polite and avoid being considered a loiterer, but the PI spends most of his time looking over @Luke Morningstar's shoulder and keeping an eye on the other customers. Luke grunts a greeting to the others already assembled and gives a nod of recognition to the newcomers.

"Good catch, Luke," Tyler says after Luke explains the situation, "Its a good lead. If we can get the name of the employees working that night, they might have overheard something useful. If nothing else, maybe we can get a good look at the security footage."

Tyler follows Luke out and hops into his car, offering anyone a ride that needs one.

Brandon only nods. If this was simply a meet up location to head somewhere else that was not uncommon. Though he wondered at the broken nature of some of the tools that where chosen. Whoever or whatever was using him, obviously liked broken people. "Fair enough then. Lets go."

"Goddamnit," Renata groused. She'd gotten there late, but had caught enough to realize that something was up and everyone was leaving. "I was really hungry too. Tyler, wait up a sec!"

At least she'd ordered for pickup though. Renata hurried to the counter and grabbed the plastic bag with the two little Chinese food boxes in it, then handed the lady a ten and a five and told her to keep the change.

Ugh. Being a warrior of the Flying Spaghetti Monster could hit the wallet sometimes.

Then she hurried out to Tyler's car and jumped into the passenger side seat.

"Two things. Where are we going, and is it okay if I eat in your car?"

Market Research
The 99 Ranch is a large, modern, and crowded Korean grocery store in a strip mall on Sepulveda Blvd. The grocery is jammed between the East West Bank a few hHinese and Koren food shops, and an acupuncture and traditional herbal medicine store. The exterior is bright and clean with ample parking. Inside the shelves are packed with foods and packages from across east Asia but kept in fairly good order. To Ken’s point the clientele is decidedly ethnic and many of the group would potentially standout, but it wouldn’t be that unusual in the multi-racial environment of the area.

Luke’s photo saw Lilith in front of the grocery store, but it’s possible she could have visited any of the shops in the plaza...or none of them.

"Just don't make a mess, @Renata Hodges," Tyler answers her, "@Luke Morningstar found a lead to the whereabouts of his...estranged wife. We're heading to the 99 Ranch grocery store on Sepulveda."

Not familiar with the area, Tyler remains in his car and googles the street and surrounding area. His mind is sharper than most, and after a few minutes familiarizing himself Tyler feels confident casing the area on foot. He gets out of his car and starts asking questions at the shops near the 99 Ranch instead of heading straight in. Tyler wants to give @Tianshi and @Ken Lang time to try their luck at mingling with the locals.

Flashing Lilith's picture isn't very useful at the Korean BBQ joint or the acupuncture shop. Fortunately, listening to the locals talk to him and one another lets him pick up some useful phrases and vocabulary before heading into the herbal medicine store. There weren't many customers, but the friendly teen working the register clammed up quickly after Tyler showed him the picture of Lilith.

"Look, Kid. You seem nice enough. Probably popular at school, huh? This lady in the picture, she's scary, but she's not here," Tyler says as he leans in close, "But I am. Kids can be mean, you know? I wonder what they'd say if you missed a few days and then showed up after obviously having been beatten to a pulp? Just tell me what you know about her and nothing bad happens. As long as you don't lie to me."

The teen opens up after being threatened, "Look, I don't know OK? My mom and dad run this place. That lady or one of her friends shows up and gets a package weekly. Usually ginseng and other...you know...uh, performance products. That's what I ring up when I'm here. Those sales always have something extra that isn't ringed up. I don't know anything else."

"Good job, kid," Tyler says, "I appreciate it."

Tyler heads back to his car and texts @Tianshi: 'Herbal Remedy shop. Maybe strange business dealings. Speak to owners about Lilith.'

Tianshi follows the feel of the group after finishing her meal. It was nice for a change not having to focus on American.

Stepping out onto the street outside the Golden Dragon she allows her senses to direct her. Her outfit actually blends in quite well with the crowds. And she walks her way down the streets seeking the group that left the Dragon after the raving @Luke Morningstar.

Americans and their marriages.

Tianshi arrives on scene at the strip mall, trying to assess the auras and feelings of the crowds and shop goers.

As she stands looking at the streets, her smartphone buzzes and begins translating after she does not pickup or answer.

The earbud chirps and Tianshi looks up at the names of the stores. The translator could probably use some work as it translates into Regal Whorehouse. Something that @Luke Morningstar would be into. Tianshi translates back into the phone and it clarifies the translation Herbal Remedy Shop.

She identifies the shop and heads in really craving some Yarrow Palm. As she heads in the teen behind the counter looks up. Tianshi briefly describes a failed marriage and such and the boy recommends a few herbs and pulls up an odd package. Mentioning that a white woman comes in and heads to a few other shops after picking up a delivery like the one on the counter.

Brandon was a fish out of water in this part of town. Luckily Tianshi and Ken knew what they were doing, because the things Brandon normally fell back on were not being received Bradley as well here.

One thing that was universal though was good food. When you see hungry people feed them is a great motto. So it was a few of the struggling people were willing to open up to him and share some information.

Peter manages to get a bit lost, but knows he has to be in the right general area...and continues to try to find the place without drawing attention to himself.

He actually does fairly well at the latter, nobody pays any attention to him. Of course, that means he does not get any information before finally spotting Luke and wandering over to join him, "I can feel the demon nearby, but can not quite locate them."

He continues to try to locate the source of the magical draw.

Ken was a little on the spot when the some of the group looked to him an Tianshi to take the lead. He kind of wanted to call them out on that kind of racist assumption, but he really couldn't argue that, even though he shared little more with the people in the shops than Brandon, they definitely treated Ken and Tianshi with just a bit more friendliness. Funny how the world works...

Ken bounces around between shops and restaurants, trying not to give away that he doesn't speak mandarin, or can't pronounce half of the shop names or menu items. Most people are polite, but tight lipped once he starts asking questions and it become clear he isn't from the area.

Its only when Ken decides to take a break, feeling his eyes start to droop. He pops into a small convenience store and grabs a Red Bull. Walking up to the counter, he sees a bored looking - maybe Japanese, Ken can't really tell - teenager staring at his phone. He looks up, sighs slightly and starts ringing Ken up.

"Nice to find a normal shop for a change. Some the stuff around here is downright strange..." Ken says, filling the awkward silence.

The young cashier snorts. "Dude, you don't know the half of it. The wares some of those shops sell are the least of the strange things that go around here..."

Ken's head jerks up, suddenly interested. "Really? What could be weirder than half developed chicken eggs and bee pupae?"

He's trying to chat up one of the shop owners when his jacket shifts wrong and the grip of his glock becomes visible at the worst possible moment... Oh crap. Is that the local muscle?

Renata hadn't really been to this part of town before, but finds herself rather enjoying herself. There's a kind of vitality to the rows of shops, and the stalls and marketplaces that seem so out of place to someone raised on supermarkets and malls. She got the sense that the merchants and buyers saw each other pretty regularly, and actually knew each other.

It lifted her usually cynical spirits, and Renata found herself smiling and laughing as she talked to a few shopowners, circulating the picture between them and some patrons. She wasn't 'one of them,' but friendliness yielded results where her usual tactics of strong-arming and intimidation would probably have closed doors.

Something to think about maybe.

A Little Column A and a Little Column B

As the group spreads out across the plaza they pick up little bits and pieces of information. Luke and Tianshi discover that Lilith ordered some very exotic far Eastern substances used in funeral rites. Meanwhile, Tyler intimidates a kid (like a prick) and finds out Lilith ordered some traditional aphrodisiacs and performance enhancers, obviously Luke and Peter aren't the only ones on her menu.

Working among the poor Brandon finds a few who recognize Lilith's picture. They don't have much to give but are able to describe her vehicle, a large pick up that she filled with more groceries than any one person could eat that headed out to the East.

In the convince store Ken is regaled with urban legends of massive origins at some places nearby where people gorge on food and other pleasures. Some of the kid's buddies apparently got invited but bailed cause shit got really weird.

In the parking lot Peter tries to go all Zen and detect any demonic presenences, instead he nearly passes his pants as a big SUV lays on the horn and an angry Asian lady yells at him to get out of the middle of the damn parking lot.

Before anyone can follow up, Simon inadvertently flashes his gun to a shop keeper who immediately reaches under the counter and pulls out a sawed off shot gun! Simon barely gets out of the way as they old guy yells and fired both barrels.

The shots send everyone running in a panic. In the parking lot a two guys with 9mms drawn jump out of a black low rider with tinted windows and head for the shop where Simon is getting the business!

Tianshi was in the shop of everyone's favorite uncle, Uncle Woo, when Uncle had fired off the sawed off shotgun. Only mildly startled, she looked up as a fine dust was falling from the ceiling. The small holes in the sheetrock said that Uncle had birdshot not buckshot loaded. That was good.

Simon looked relieved and a bit shocked and Tianshi began speaking to Uncle.

Korean "Most Honorable Uncle. What were you shooting at?"

Korean "Did you not see the gangdo (thug) with gun?"

Benny for Narrative Re-Write (2 of 3 remaining)

Tianshi looks in the direction that Uncle looks, as he fumbles while reloading both barrels of the shotgun. She sees through the store window, two guys with 9mm pistols.

The shotgun fire has begun drawing a crowd and she offers to answer questions while Uncle figures out the reloading process. She steps behind the counter to keep the amassing crowd from over-running her and looks down and realizes that Uncle has varying sizes of shotgun shells behind the counter. Currently he is trying to insert sandbag shells, which are way to big.

One thing she realizes is that Uncle's vision is not what it once was. Uncle also seems very wound up about gangdo, which could be considered a term for triad extortionists as well as @Simon.

"Our Most Esteemed Uncle has decided to make a stand against criminals and gangdo in our neighborhood."

"He fired a warning shot towards them," Tianshi points directly at the two thugs entering the store.

Korean "We should not let Uncle loose his store and his livliehood. Protect Uncle."

Hearing a gunshot, Peter heads in the direction it came from. Not having any better clue to follow for the moment.

As a result, he is behind the two men with guns as they enter the shop.

He is not sure if they are gang members, undercover cops, or a citizen's protection group. Right now, he just follows them. He will figure out something to do once they reveal themselves. Preferably he can think of something that does not require magic, as he thinks using magic will attract demonic attention.

Quick as a wink Luke signed into Twitch and live streamed it all allowing himself to slowly follow the crowd drifting to the back of the throng. A baby cried, its mother fell. Luke scooped up the baby shushing it and stepped over the mother only willing to help so much.

Baby in hand he reported, “I am Luke Morningstar. The chaos here in china town teeters on bedlam. Armed individuals are assaulting the good citizens of LA with wanton abandon for saftey. Claiming their is a devil in us all. But really I wonder who the devil really is?” These assholes took my wife. I will bring them into the light and let them burn.

The baby cried and the mother chased Luke down slapping him across the face. The mom frowned recognizing the second most famous blogger in LA. She pulled her baby to her covering the child with a I love Mornings sweater sleeve.

“Oh my god, Luke Morningstar! You saved my baby I am so sorry... I brush my teeth to your-”

Truth was he just needed some twitch feed of a baby crying for ratings. He learned long ago folks will watch babies crying on twitch for no reason for hours on end. Something his Lilith was fond of. Before anything untoward could happen the crowd surged and a pair of douche bags shoved the two aside.

If given the chance to duck into a doorway or architectural alcove he took it. He used his six mega pixel lens to give the followers of Jilted666 a live accounting of the horror being perpetrated. Last but not least the master blogger let slip some dogs of war possibly and inadvertently helping Simon as the two armed individuals bore down on the musketeer wanna bee. Camera on me...

He straightened his fine clothes, smoothed his designer suit, and leaned down wiping a bit of smudge off his Windsor tips. Loud enough for one of the gun men to hear he chortled, “When I shop for shoes... I don’t ever shop at Ross...”

Ken does understand a lick of what comes out of @Tianshi until she temporarily switches over to what is suprisingly good english, if with a heavy accent.

Rile the crowd...that's risky. If it doesn't work, we are painting a target on our backs...

But the deed is done, so Ken looks for something he can do to help stoke the fire. He considers pretending to be shot for a short second, but there haven't been any shots fired so it wouldn't be particularly believable. We he notices that the thug closest to him only has 4 fingers , it gives him an idea.

Making sure he is hanging toward the back of a large crowd, Ken picks up a heafty rock and tosses it as the thug when his back is turned.

"That's the man who shot my father!" He forces his breathing to get heavy and manically looks around for another rock, and quickly picks it up and throws it. He misses intentionally, not wanting to get the man's attention. The act is mostly for the crowd.

"You bastard! He still hasnt come out of the coma!" Ken' face is flushed dark red and while tears don't fall from his eyes, those nearby can see that they glisten with moisture. "I hope you rot in hell!" he shouts as he tosses another rock.

His performance complete, he steps back and tries to be inconspicuous while searching for the others.

Face-Off
Thanks to Ken and Luke a crowd quickly gathers in the parking lot leaving the thug surrounded by potential witnesses. Inside the store Tianshi calms down the shopkeeper while Simon cowers behind a noodle display. As the crowd mills about waiting to see what happens the Korean thug looks confused, angry, and scared all at the same time, as if perhaps he really did shoot someone’s father and isn’t sure what to do.

The second thug from the car joins his partner as they quietly debate what to do. They don’t want to lose face in front of this crowd but obviously don’t want to shoot everyone up either. Finally, one of them speaks up.

”Yo! You have messed up Uncle’s store and threw some serious shade about me killing some old man in front of everyone. These people rely on us for protection, so I need to mess you up.”

Saving Face
There’s a crowd here and they can’t look weak. Three round social conflict to de-escalate.

Luke zooms in on the talkative thug after somehow helping a bunch of people he does not know get out of the line of fire. After a quick google search he was ready to go for the proverbial jugular. The master blogger yells jeering the thug onward, “Go ahead! Throw a punch or do whatever you hard types like to do with other men. There is a cell in Lancaster with your name on it, and I’ll make sure Warden Johnson replay’s my twitch feed non stop so you can see yourself covered in man glory.”

Social interactions are not Peter's thing, so he steps back...not sure what he can do to help. He does suggest, "Perhaps we could repair the damages to the store. I get the feeling those were accidental."

"Nah, you don't need to mess them up," Renata says as she finally catches up. She looks around at the crowd, then lifts her hands up, palms out, so as not to seem like she was armed.

Then she looked back at the one doing the talking and locked eyes with him.

"What do you say we settle this dispute just you and me? No guns or weapons, no big...crazy mob rush on each other. We get these folks to give us some room, and then..."

She smiled humorlessly. "You can mess me up. If you can. And whoever wins, this whole...thing ends here. We won't hold any of it against you. And you don't hold it against us. It's done. If you don't want to do it THAT way, then things'll get ugly. Real ugly. Nobody wants that."

Renata held out a hand, eyes never leaving the thug's. "Deal?"

Seeing everything starting to escalate Brandon says a silent prayer to whatever being out there has been helping him. Instead of adding his own words where the others have already said what was needed he instead focuses on crowd. A small bit f positive energy here, and just a nudge to the emotions there is all that is needed. No one really wants violence, they are mostly confused is all.

With his heart laden full of empathy and compassion he let it flow into the crowd, even into those from his own group. Violence has always been the final solution to a problem. But usually is is also the worst solution.

"Rely on you for...huh? Uh...hold on a second..." Ken mentally scrambles, realizing that they may have misread these two, and that they don't work for Lilith. He comes up with an idea, reaching into his bag and - slowing - pulling out his backup glasses case. He puts his glasses on, which just causes his eyesight to blurr when combined wit the contacts he is already wearing, and looks at the man who spoke closely.

Ken then twists his face is shock and - without having to dig too deeply - fear.

"Whoah, man I'm so sorry.... I seriously thought you were the dirtbag who shot my dad." Ken says speaking loudly enough for the crowd around him to hear "He was wearing a tribly hat just like that one you've got on and...well lets face it. You guys do all kinda look alike at first glance.", Ken shrugs his shoulders. "So uh...yeah. Sorry."

Peter hopes the others can manage the de-escalation, we are not here to battle the neighborhood protection organization (or whatever they call themselves here). He will go into the store and look over the damage. Perhaps there is something he can do about it...though it is likely to be risky.

He thinks he could repair some things with his magic, but it might attract attention if he tries. It might not be worth the risk.

Fast Talking and Face Saving
As a stand off develops, the group turns to their area of strength: shooting off their mouths.

Between Luke's taunts, Renata's threats, Brandon's quiet presence, and Ken's tactful backtrack the thugs wave their guns in a dramatic gesture - indicating the group leave.

"Whatever. You guys are crazy, just get out of here before the cops show up. Nobody here wants that."

With an opening to leave the team has a chance for a graceful exit and a chance to compare notes. Yet, will they take it?

Given the chance at an exit, Tianshi waves to @Simon to exit quickly behind or within the crowd that is leaving the market. Anyone not interested in making a purchase has headed outside to other shopping, seeing that the situation and high strung tensions have been released and let go.

Tianshi helps uncle stand up after putting the reloaded shotgun back under the counter. She speaks lovingly to the old Korean and tells him that he scared off the thugs. When she is certain that Simon is out of the shop, she hands uncle back his glasses which he had previously placed on the counter while reloading the shotgun.

She thanks Uncle profusely for his helpfulness in protecting her and providing additional information on suspisious activity. She does ask @Venatus Vinco Uncle when the strange anglo woman (Lilith) had last been in the shop for purchases.

Peter leaves, being an obvious non-local at this moment would not help. Hopefully, he can get a list from the others of exactly what was being bought. Still, he can make an educated guess as to purpose, and what place if the others managed to learn which local neighborhood the wild parties are being held in.

Peter informs the others, "I think that the goal here is to ritually bring back the dead, by an inversion of the funeral rites. I will try to locate an appropriate place for such a task. That could explain the appearance of demons who should be 'dead and banished'."

He thinks that he can figure it out by going over land deeds and satellite photos to find a location where bad chi would accumulate. Oriental cultures believe Chi flows along dragon lines and is strengthened or weakened by symbolism...for example a plot of land shaped like an animal can be very strong in chi, but an animal with an arrow pointing at it would have bad chi.

Luke followed @Tianshi wondering what exactly her part was in all this. She was mildly attractive and would make a good feature for his next video blog. Looking into the camera on his phone Luke kept his twitch followers looped in, “Looks like we have a Lead...” He swiveled the camera putting Tianshi into focus and then cut the feed teasing the viewers. Peter was going on about something but honestly Luke was pretty sure he was the ring leader and trying to get him alone to perform some kind of satanic rite. If there was some way to get the thugs to plug that cheating bastard he would have taken it. A lost opportunity...

He scurried after the would be asian sword wielding barista dodging a couple local fans and called after her, “Hey Sword lady... Wait up!”
GM
If Luke wanted to learn where the neighborhood was and any kind of prime local for a anti death ritual what kimd of roll?

Peter responds, "I, at least, and willing to work with you people, the question is, are you willing to work with us? We may have wound up on the flip side of the coin, but mostly not by choice. I do not think any of us knew what we were getting involved with."

He thinks, what I thought I was doing had nothing to do with demons or anything, even if it was a bit immoral.

EVERYONE
Tianshi steps outside of Uncle's shop and immediately spots @Brandon Meyers and close by @Tyler Puckett. She makes a be line towards them both as the crowds disperse and the Korean Protection Agency loads back into their car.

While she is aware of where everyone else is, she focuses on @Brandon Meyers because he seems the most intent on saying something and getting everyone else's attention.

When she gets to Brandon and Tyler, she finds that they are standing in between their two vehicles and she is ready to discuss some details.
