1.3 Montage

Post by KahlessNestor »

The weeks in the headquarters bunker flew by or crawled slowly, depending on one’s perspective. Every morning except Sunday, Caleb ran them hard through physical training. Each grueling workout left them five pounds lighter through water loss, but slowly worked them into better shape. And after each workout, Tamar was there with a hearty, home cooked breakfast for them (including any special requests they might ask).

Mornings were spent with Dr. Helios and Ms. Roman on academic matters, making sure the new students were caught up with where they should be in their classes before they joined the general population of the Academy.

After a home cooked lunch from Tamar, the students went to self defense training. Caleb taught them the fundamentals of unarmed combat, and then personalized the lessons to each student’s abilities and penchants. Those less aggressive were taught more defensive arts like aikido and judo. More aggressive students focused on arts like jiu jitsu and krav maga. But everyone learned the basics they needed to know for every situation.

The rest of the afternoon was dedicated to individual powers training, whether in the training room or elsewhere. They focused on the fundamentals of control and accuracy, and expanding the repertoire of what each student could do with their powers. When they weren’t in training, students had free time.

After a home cooked dinner by Tamar, the students were left to their own devices. They could schedule more training time, if they desired, or just lounge in the rec room or their personal rooms, watch TV, play video games, work on homework. LIghts out was at ten o’clock, midnight on the weekend.

Saturday mornings were given over to team training, learning to work with others, using powers in conjunction with each other, and just general team building exercises. Saturday afternoons were free time.

Sundays were a free day. There was no PT, and transportation was provided for church services, if desired. Occasionally a field trip into the city would be scheduled for Saturday or Sunday afternoons, visiting museums, Millenium Park, or just a fun outing in general.

The week of Thanksgiving there were no classes and no organized training, though students were allowed to schedule individual training with a faculty member if they so desired. For those students with no family to go to, Tamar cooked a full Thanksgiving spread. For those who wanted to be with family, arrangements were made to get them there safely, under the watchful eye of a faculty member, of course.

Training and classes continued as they had after Thanksgiving, until Christmas, when the same arrangements were made. And each student received a special gift from Dr. Helios and the rest of the faculty.

All too soon, it would be January, and they would be integrated into the Academy population.
Interlude time!
Write some interlude montages. Some things to include:
  • How does your character take to the physical side of training? They should be getting stronger and more fit. This includes the combat training and any other skills they pick up.
  • How does your character take to the academic side of training? Include any skills you pick up.
  • How does your character take to the powers side of training? Do they learn anything new? Better control? Include any skills you pick up.
  • How does the meeting with the family go? This is easily scheduled the week of Thanksgiving (or Christmas), but can be done earlier, or whenever. The school will be getting the parent/guardian’s permissions needed, including medical records and such, and giving them information on the public side of the Academy. They will be verbally told of the more private side, as well, and about mutants and the nature of their child in general (if they are amenable; otherwise such knowledge will be kept discreet, should the student wish it, and some other story would be given for the Nexus incident). This will also include (probably earlier than Thanksgiving) the funeral for Caelian’s father, and retrieving Jason’s mastiff.
  • Reaction to the gift.
Take a benny for writing your interlude

Every student also receives the following benefits.
  • You receive a free d4 in three skills your choice of skills from this list. You may stack with an existing skill, but only if it doesn’t put you over your skill point threshold in that skill.
    • Academics
    • Athletics
    • Driving
    • Fighting
    • Healing
    • Language
    • Piloting
    • Research
    • Science
    • Shooting
  • As part of your training, you receive a uniform
    • Costume
    • Red and gold skin tight uniform made of material specially treated by advanced physics to work with superpowers without being destroyed and take quite a bit of damage. It is easily concealable beneath clothes.
      • Armor +2 (torso, arms, legs)
      • Built in encrypted comms with 5 mile radius
      • Electronic masking (face is blurred on electronic images)
  • Christmas Gift
    • Shanice gets a pair of midfield, front row tickets to the next Olympics Women’s Soccer Gold Medal Tokyo 2020 game.
    • Rob gets the next line of Nikes that aren’t even due out until 2020.
    • Caelian receives his father’s first prize fight medal, the one he had accidentally broken as a child and that had been thrown away. It looks brand new.
    • Jason receives a trip to swim with the dolphins in the Carribean.
    • Samuel receives the first place trophy he’d won in school for his spider robot. It had been lost in a house move.
    • Kat receives a teddy bear. It had been given to her by her mother when she was six. It had long since fallen apart and been discarded, along with that idealistic childhood. Now it looked practically new, and still smelled of her mother’s perfume.
    • Constance receives an old picture she remembers from her mother’s photo album. It is a wedding picture of her mother and father, with a few generations up to her great-grandfather. In the background, on the wall, is a portrait of an older man that looks remarkably like Dr. Paul Helios.

By some sort of miracle, Dr. Helios is able to approach Caelian with an opportunity to bury his father. A strange position for Caelian of course but he asks that he be left alone with the body to identify it. An hour alone with the body and Caelian is quite certain that it is his father.

Looking over the body of his father, Caelian realizes that the shots fired by the Nexus thugs were all leveled at his father's torso. A comment his father made to him once long ago, came to mind in that instant, "The men of our family have only ever briefly been found together. In the end, there can be only one of us."

So it was, that with the body identified, funeral proceedings followed. Caelian was at the funeral dressed in a large white suit, like Kingpin wore from the comic books, and lush mane of red hair that would make Lex Luthor swoon. He was accompanied by two watchers from the academy, but Caelian clearly dwarfed them.

At his side, however, was a very tall, well built, athletic female. To those who asked, he introduced himself as Gaidheal Blythe, a cousin of the late Blythe, and executor of Blythe's estate. He introduced @Winger as Shanice. Any further questions were disregarded.
Sidebar
In the week following the funeral, while he and Shanice @Winger are training, Caelian takes a moment between sets, "Thanks for agreeing to come with me to my father's funeral. You and other teens are the closest thing to family that I have. I appreciated your company."
When he went to lay flowers on the casket before it was buried, they were a bouquet of white roses, mountain heather and laurel. That was a week or so before Thanksgiving.

The only other thing Caelian did was to collect on the bets his father had placed prior to his death. Other than cleaning up their home and setting it upto be sold, Caelian spent time practicing and working out and watching fighting matches whenever he could. " Dad always did say, if you can't be in the ring then bet like you were."

Sam works his tail off, practicing body strengthening exercises, learning how to fight with a number of weapons, practicing his powers so that he can quickly form specific memorized shapes quickly, and studying more about mechanics and how things are put together.

One nice thing about his powers, it does not matter if he is hurt, he can quickly fix himself...as long as he is conscious and sensible. Of course, that means no pain killers or other drugs that might cause his mind to get blurry. He is going to develop a high degree of pain tolerance if this keeps up.

He is trying hard to talk to the others, though he is generally going to be less successful what it comes to talking to girls. As long as he keeps on the subject and is very specific about what he wants to say he is usually not too bad. Speaking on the spur of the moment is not an option. He wonders whether, if he ever actually likes a girl, he will even be able to talk to her.

He works himself hard every day, eats a lot to fuel both his normal and his mutant metabolism and sleeps better than he would if he were not pretty much exhausted when he falls into bed.

If he can, he sends messages to his parents to assure them he is all right and is attending a good school. He hopes they are all right and have not been mentally programmed, but has no way to tell if they have been. It is one thing that he tries not to think about...and is part of why he is working so hard.

Kat doesn't slack on the physical and combat training, despite her obvious resentment of both. In particular, Caleb finds that her skill with thrown objects is preternaturally good; increasing her baseline athletic skill makes her equal to all but the best when it comes to tossing an object where she wants it to go. She's not particularly fast, though, and her upper-body strength still is that of a spindly-armed fourteen-year-old girl, meaning that she'd be a poor fit for direct attacks. Still, Caleb is probably already realizing that she could be a real threat with flashbang and smoke grenades (or, of course, the real thing), though the idea of trusting her with explosives outside of a controlled environment might seem unwise right at the moment. As far as the hand-to-hand is concerned, she's definitely a 'soft' style preference, mainly focusing on defense and evasion.
OOC Comments
Fighting to d4, Athletics to d6 (which raises her Throwing Super Skill up to a d12).
On the academic side of things, the picture is murkier, at first. She seems to be blowing off her studies and assignments (particularly the homework); but when it comes time to take a test, she does reasonably well out of the gate, and over time, that just improves, with her getting As in any non-math-based course. When given a task to interpret or analyze the themes of a piece of literature, in particular, she can dissect a text five different ways, coming back with multiple interpretations. Similarly, she can often perceive patterns in history and economics lessons that elude college freshmen.

Math and science classes drag behind the humanities; she seems to have occasional insights that bespeak her hyperactive brain, but she lacks the interest to dig in deep to the numbers the way she does the stuff she finds more fascinating.

OOC Comments
Academics to d8. The 'random insights' come from being Gifted, and thus able to roll Science at d4 even unskilled.
Powers training is probably her biggest ambivalence. Part of the trouble is just identifying how her powers actually work. The Hex Bolts, as she's taken to calling the black, coruscating energy she can hurl at people and machinery to shut them down, are pretty self-evident, but there seems to be a lot that happens in the background with her, as well. Caleb, for all his skill, often finds himself flat on his back due to any number of sources of interference, such as a random glint of light catching him in the eye, or a bit of debris ending up underfoot. Even when not getting caught in such a fashion, though, Kat herself also is preternaturally fortunate, able to evade blows that absolutely should've connected. Other than refining her effectiveness in using the Hex Bolts (making it easier for her to shut down machines, or showing her how to create a more broad-based 'curse' that enervated a target across the board), she didn't really have much opportunity to develop her power in the same way someone with armor or energy blasts might.

And then... there's her mouth. It takes a considerable amount of observation to determine that she's not just good at spotting people's weaknesses and exploiting them. As Caleb tells Helios one night during a review, "She just guesses what will get under your skin. It's almost like a nasty flavor of ESP, but it even works when we're jamming psychic abilities. She shoots off her mouth at random, and just happens to mention what's actually likely to distract you at that moment--usually in a way that even she doesn't realize what she's just been digging at. It'd be impressive if she wasn't a little bitch about it."

Prof. Helios chuckled wryly. "Oh, I know. You should see her history project. She did a comprehensive analysis of children indoctrination programs--starting with the Children's Crusade and leading through the Hitler Jugend and the child soldiers of central Africa. She never mentions the Academy once, but by the time I was done reading it, I was shaken enough to have to go through our program and look for elements that might be more coercive than we'd intended."

Caleb snorted. "She mostly doesn't seem to direct it to her teammates, thank goodness, at least not beyond the nicknames. But almost all of the adults on staff have gotten stung once or twice. She's used it on me in combat training a couple times, and it left me just distracted enough for her to nail me with one of those Hex Bolts of hers. I admit, I'm a bit worried about what'll happen once she's in the general student population. I'll be blunt--I could see her pushing some more fragile teen over the edge."

Helios' brow furrowed at that idea.
OOC Comments
Power Respec done--Negation and Malfunction are now Switchable, with the added bonus that Negation is now broad-band, applying to all Traits at once, while Negation now uses a d12 for the Spirit roll to activate, at the cost of needing her to first hit with a Throwing roll, just like Negation does.

And yes, giving a character with Super-Skill:Taunt the Mean Hindrance does make for a potentially explosive cocktail in a high school setting. There's no way they aren't at least a little worried about it.
Kat absolutely insisted her father be told nothing about the true nature of the Academy, saying that if she was 'outed' to him, she'd hit the streets, Nexus or no. She simply figures that would be the last straw, learning that his daughter is a 'freak', and get her cut off from him completely--which concern, of course, belies her general insistence that she doesn't care what he thinks of her, etc. Still, she does seem serious about the threat to ditch the program.

Most of the parent visit was painful for anyone unfortunate enough to observe it--her defenses are just so high that her dad simply cannot get around or over them. He did, however, bring a bunch of stuff for her from home, which caused a momentary softening of the eyes when she looked inside the old trunk. She even hugged him when he left, which actually startled him--of course, that momentary pause on his part was then interpreted as a rejection by her, and the whole thing ended on a sour note. (It will ultimately be learned that the trunk contains a bunch of magic shoppe items--books of tricks, gaffed coins and cards, and so forth. Through December, she is often seen practicing simple coin-and-card tricks in the game lounge. She's no grand magician, but she can manage a fair bit of sleight-of-hand.)

There's one other flat-out refusal on her part when it comes to cooperation with 'the program'--to wit, the uniform. She goes in, tries it on, and comes out of her room carrying it in her hands, and passes it back. "Nope." Her rationale becomes pretty clear after some discussion--"This uniform is meant to be worn in public. I'm a fourteen-year-old girl. Cell-phones, Reddit and the Chans exist. Cargo shorts, or a knee-length skirt, or something, or I'll just stick to my street clothes." As with informing her father about the truth, she's utterly intransigent on this point. As far as she's concerned, figuring out a way to accommodate her--well, 'modesty' seems the wrong word, but it's close enough for this purpose--while still making the clothes something that can be concealed under other clothing is their problem, not hers.

Her other rebellions are comparatively minor, for the most part--for instance, she smuggles a small flashlight into her room, using it to read by after lights-out, in the classic under-the-covers fashion. During field trips, she often acquires other minor contraband--trashy novels or magazines and newspaper tabloids--that she gets from newsstands and gift shops in the museums and other tourist attractions. Although there was one other more... notable instance....

After declining the first two opportunities to go to church, Kat suddenly reversed course and opted to attend mass at one of the city's many smaller Roman Catholic churches. Really, they should've seen it coming.... She behaved herself throughout the Mass, but during the coffee hour afterwards, proceeded to create a scene by asking some very difficult and pointed theological questions, upsetting several of the congregation members who were simply caught off-guard. By the time her minders managed to hustle her off-scene, she'd managed to reduce the Sunday School teacher to sputtering rage, and induced a deacon to tears. Helios and Caleb revisited the subject of just how much damage she was capable of in the general Academy.

Team-building exercises are a constant source of frustration for Caleb, too, in no small part because Kat herself does provide assistance (sometimes amazingly effective, when she shuts down an opposing device or enervates an enemy) to her teammates, so it's hard to say she isn't a team player--she simply refuses to rely on them to do the same. Thus, it becomes nearly impossible to coordinate their activities with her when she's on point. She just won't wait for back-up or other aid--if the other person doesn't have their timing down precisely, she forges ahead solo (and this is the one time she WILL lash out at a teammate verbally, berating them if the entire task was failed because they weren't 'able to keep up'.) And of course, every time she does succeed (which is generally at least a bit more often than she should, by all rights), it just reinforces her own overconfidence.

Thanksgiving, she does go home. Again, her, ah, unique view of the world leads to an ultimate falling out; she opts to stay at the school during Christmas. Her gift from Helios and staff manages to leave her completely speechless ("A Christmas miracle," Caleb murmurs to Tamar, who elbows him in the ribs). She eventually just takes it back to her room. It's never seen 'out' in the room--instead, she keeps it in the box, on a shelf in the closet during the day; it only comes out at night, when she holds it while she sleeps.

Tamar took the uniform back from Kat and gave her a sympathetic smile. Esperanza, lounging nearby, was less sympathetic.

“You’re a woman. Use it,” Esper told Kat. “You’ll look good in it. Trust me.”

Tamar gave Esper a look that told the taller woman she wasn’t being helpful, and then turned back to Kat. “Ah remember thinkin’ much the same thing when Ah first tried it,” she said. “Well, Ah’m not sure what Chans are.” She gave Kat a conspiratorial smile. “But at least you won’t burn off all your clothes the first time ya light up, like Ah did.” She actually blushed a bit.

“Here, kid. Use this.” Esperanza sat forward and shrugged out of a super-expensive leather jacket and tossed it to Kat. Esper was a tall woman, so the jacket would be a bit oversized on Kat, but it would help cover things up. And it looked super cool. “I bet she couldn’t pull off the uniform, anyway,” Esper challenged Kat with a smile.

Rob took to training slowly. Relying on his powers was simple and easy. Healing fatigue in the bones, or cuts and scrapes when needed. Strengthening his arms for lifting weights, or his stamina when needing to run. This path left him constantly performing above par, but never say him progressing. His limits remained the same.

The first couple weeks as it turned out where not a total waste. For while the others mode progress, Rob was shown to have no advance at all. When Tamara came to him she looked the same as always, but when she spoke Rob knew it was more serious than usual so he listened. “Rob, do you think this is a joke? We are spending time and money giving you the opportunity to improve. But you keep slipping into using your powers to prevent yourself from actually gaining any improvement.”

Rob was surprised. “I mean we are here to learn our powers right? And I am pushing them when I can.”

Tamara shook her head. “No, we are trying to make you the best you can be, and prepare you for any circumstances you may encounter. What are you going to do if you cannot access your powers? Suppose you come across someone with a stronger will power than you and he simply shuts down your powers. How will you solve the problem then? Will your friends die, because you wanted to be lazy in your training?”

The talk did what Tamara expected. Rob really did care about people, and he did not want anyone with him to be hurt by another situation like the one before. Working hard, Rob pushed himself, for more than two thirds of his training time he would focus only on the skills needed to do what the job was. When he did use his powers he focused on using just the right amount for what was needed, not using the full raw power he was gifted with, but instead trying to learn the subtle nuances of the power that let him do something more.

At the range Rob started learning soon, building skill, and growing. Within no time he was able to reliably hit the target at least three quarters of the time. While his raw strength was not climbing his fast twitch muscles and reaction time was showing marked improvement. Rob struggled to keep up with the hand to hand combat training. He was constantly frustrated by his inability to secure his second place spot. It seems he was not the only one with some previous experience at martial arts. This made the contest significantly harder. He could not just accept being beaten he had to much pride for that, but at the same time it stung every time he would lose a round. This drove him and motivated him to push harder and build skills better.

Sam was home for Thanksgiving. He had been worried, the enemy clearly knows who his family is since they kidnapped him from his workroom in the shed behind the house. Still, Chase had checked his family over and found no tampering, so he had come home.

Things were going normally, a dozen distant relatives gathered to share a turkey and various sides, generally each family bringing one of those while the host family did the turkey and dressing.

Something was bothering Sam, the neighbor's daughter, Jenny, had been watching him since he got home. Once, a long time ago, they had been friends...both the geeky kids. When they started growing up he started fumbling his words, especially around girls, and she was the girl he was around most. He wound up driving her away, which he has always regretted.

He decides to look in on her and see what she is doing. He creates a remote, disguising it as a chipmunk, and sends it to climb up to Jenny's room. It is a bit of an effort to control a mobile remote and to see and hear through it while still acting normally. No one here knows about his powers, he does not want to upset them.

He discovers no one is in Jenny's room, but her computer is on. She was writing about him in her blog. Something about the writing bothers him, she is writing as if she thinks of him as an inhuman monster.

He realizes, I was foolish, I had my family checked out for tampering, but did not think to have them check the neighbors.

Retracting the remote, he quickly makes a call to the institute, "My position has been compromised, pick me up as soon as possible."

"Point is, Hot Momma, that nowadays it's not just whoever happens to be there when you have a wardrobe malfunction who gets the show; it's pretty much every pimple-faced turd on the face of the planet--including my 'teammates'. And there's no real chance to stop it if there's someone with a cell phone around to play paparazzi. So, yeah, I'm still gonna need more than that... thing... below the waist."

She's about to turn on Esper, but actually is thrown off-guard by the jacket, running her hands over it, trying it on. "Uh... okay, no lie, this is awesome." She practically snuggles into it. "But it doesn't really do the whole 'fit under my clothing' thing, does it? If someone sees... I Luck Gal, or whatever I decide to go with, with this on, won't it be pretty much make it easy to make the connection?" She gets a smirk. "Mind you, no takebacks."

She frowns, hating to actually ASK for something, but.... "I'm just saying, with all this tech and such, it seems like it should be simple to have, I dunno, a belt that drops to a decent length skirt when you change. Or hell, one of those holo-thingees, only instead of changing our faces, since we apparently can't be trusted with that kind of disguises, just projects a costume with a mask."

ANd with that 'request', she heads off... still wearing the jacket.

Post by Winger »

Shanice didn't take any offers to call home. But she does ask Tamar to order a Rio de Janeiro Christ the Redeemer postcard and a stamp for her. She writes basically "Best vacation ever! Can't wait to see you at Thanksgiving!! <3 Shanchan" She's spent a lot of time and paper practicing before writing on the postcard to get it perfect. Then she gave it to the staff to mail however they do it to leave no tracebacks.

If anyone nefarious gets a glimpse of it, they're welcome to try avoiding detection while casing the Walker house at Thanksgiving only to find absolutely nothing. No Shanice, no family coming over to celebrate, no abnormal grocery shopping, nothing. There are eyes in the house looking out for suspicious things, though.

A week later, December 5th, the Walkers drive off to dinner a little earlier than usual, but hit I-4 to International Drive and head in with a groupon to Texas de Brazil (Brazilian steakhouse) and get a table for four. ER Nurse Walker has worked every Thanksgiving forever, so their traditional holidays are offset to better days with no crowds. And just after they're settled, the new skinned Shanice and a handler show up to join them. There's no dry eyes at that meeting, almost entirely from the discovery of her next new look. The Walkers didn't seem particularly stressed about her vanishing these last few weeks with no word. Well, at least not after the postcard arrived. Dad and Shanice had plenty of conversations over what to do if one of them disappears on a mission but needs to get word home without compromising status, especially after the Hallmark 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered' episode of the soldier mom stranded in the Middle East.

Shanice asked Dr. Zoe if she wanted to be the +1 and get out of the fortress for a daytrip to Orlando if she'd count as a handler. But Shanice understands if that doesn't work and is cool and friendly with whoever goes. If it's more than one handler, then there were that many !'s and that many empty seats at the table ready for them. Any guest at the Walker table is family, as much out of Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving spirit as out of comradeship over enjoying the endless carnivorathon. At $50 a person, this is a rare extravagance, but moreso because Shanice skipped it last year.

Then there's the other thing Shanice has been obsessing about for over a month now, dumping on her parents that she's taking mom with her to TOKYO!!!!!! She's done tons of preplanning for the seven-month-away trip and found $1400 roundtrip tickets and $180 a night hotel rooms for the week of the Friday Aug 7th game, so if they reserve Everything now and save $600/mnth every month, it's going to be super coupon tight, but they'll totally do it. Them not needing to cover her on their insurance anymore will totes cover a lot of that. The level of delayed fractional dawning Shanice had at seeing the tickets in the first place is flawlessly reproduced by Mom's look trying to figure out how she'll get that much time off at once hearing about it now. But there's no major holidays and it's enough months away so chances of it all working out are good. Whoever handed the tickets to stunned Shanice had gotten a huge hug. And that's the same type hug Shanice is getting from her stunned mom now.

The news that she's at a private school covered by grants is a relief. They do give the handler verbal agreement by the end of the dinner on all that, and can deal with the paperwork and medical records later easily enough. Plausible Deniability lends to practically zero information really being imparted about school above or below the table. They important part is they can see how happy and confident she is, no major red flags from the handler, and the assurance from their daughter that, seriously, if it ever gets stupid, she can literally just fly away. Dad and daughter do exchange a lot of representative, metaphorical information in terms of movie references, but mostly just solidifying how tope and dime and beast everything is rather than actual details on specifically how.

If Dr. Zoe is the handler, then the two African-American medical career women are bound to have a conversation on their own that could be in vagueries about Shanice's condition or could literally just be about how ridicules their line of work is, anywhere. If it's more of a nameless security goon, then it's more Dad's job of politely, inoffensively, interrogating, or chumming up just fine with mutual military vehicle misadventures. Mom's brief interview would be satisfying her own curiosities about the school's medical capabilities, but not digging into anything too extreme.

Both her parents pick up on how hardbody she is now, even passed the new skin that ... they'd never thought they'd ever see her entire life Before she become something even further from it. It takes a lot of convincing to not take a family picture, but even if the handler's don't step in, Shanice isn't comfortable with it herself right now. Not yet. She feels like the explanation for her new look is obvious enough. She's in with other 'special teammates' now and one of them figured out how to make her look like this, nuff said.

It's hard to say goodbye, but it helps that everyone's nearly in a coma from consumption. She tells them she's 50/50 on coming back for Christmas, but that's no doubt a time-shifted holiday with offset traditions to and they accept it. All the proud-and-crying Walkers are off to their respective homes once more.

_____

Physical training: Like all championship soccergirls, she's basically insane. Coach had her running, kicking, headballing, situational awareness of her teammates. Daddy gauged her combat training by how much the Parent Teacher conferences made him smile, because he couldn't stop the bullies from verbally abusing her, but he wasn't career military to watch his kid get in physical altercations unprepared. When it came to nonlethal attacks, she is efficient, and savage. Twist the pinky till they're on the ground and Then kick them in the nuts. Then there's her ER nurse mother's encyclopedic knowledge of how human's break, and in hard to spot or prove ways. Shanice can scratch and rip hair with cheerleaders, make teen footballers squeal, and knows some really slick disarm and escape moves. Turns out, after a fashion, the bullies decided to avoid physical contact.

Caleb puts it together pretty fast. She's hasn't spent much or any time in a gi in proper martial arts kid classes, but what she's learned growing up are a handful of really solid skills, like a basic judo throw, a brazilian jiu jitsu ground escape, krav maga disarming. She's primed to go straight to the aggressive stuff. The slow part for her is transition to lethal moves, because everything she's ever done was nonlethal. But it's in her head and easy to get in her head that she's already killed two bad guys, and she'll eventually need to do it again. She'll likely spend extra time in the holoroom trying to get comfortable with acting fast and brutal And lethal.

(currently capped on fighting d6 to agility d6)

Academic training: The separation of Academic Time from Body Time from Power Time makes all the sense to her, just like school from sports. As an extra cirricular, though, she actually wants pilot training. It's ... an embarrassing thing she doesn't want to voice but ... she can fly ... and ... every flying superhero ever has to save an aircraft at some point. It could happen. Also even if she's outside one and can't bubble the whole thing but can use shapes to help stabilize it somehow, she really doesn't wanna practice "3rd person FlightSimX w/Oven Mits" for the first time with live passengers on the line. Then there's driving. Yes, she might get so frustrated with parallel parking that she might look around for anyone watching and cheat with a disc hovering the car sideways into space. But she's also spent a lot of time bubble moving cars in parking lots and has a profound sense of spacial geometry with them ... just not the steering radius limiting rotation aspect. No daughter of a third generation Armored Cav. Walker puts off driving.

She's eager to get back into languages, having fallen behind during her year essentially alone. She does catch up, but that doesn't raise her to a new skillful plateau as much just get her back on track for this private school grade level. She'll tell anyone she's not that smart, but it turns out she actually is. She stopped school, but not reading. Now she has individualized tutoring, her self-confidence, self-image, and anxiety levels. There's no measure for the difference it makes when she can march around campus with that pendant on, or break a sweat with it off with a team that's on her side. She voiced her practicality issues with the "bodypaint spandex" uniforms, but after two months here, compared to teen girls, she's got Marilyn Monroe magnetic confidence and will wear anything. It helps that pimples are isolated chemical buildups and not necessarily genetic features a holo-pendant should waste any processing power recreating. She'll immediately be in the control room looking for technicians if it does.

(skillups: academics d4, piloting d4, driving d4)

Powers training: She was a rock star the night they broke out. It was hard to tell what anyone else was doing. it was all happening so fast. But by the end it was her fending off multiple shooters with a double walls while Caelin was helping but in purely Hulk-Smash coventional ways. She'd done the double wall before, ... once ... on a clear, sunny day ... at 1mph ... slowly herding cows ... and the cows weren't shooting at her. She's burrowed in a bubble and she knows she can make another shape while doing it, but ... the logistics in her head give her a headache fast. That's an area she needs outside eyes and telemetry to coach her technique.

But the part that grips her mind completely is when the brains tell her she can theoretically group people into bubbles without having to focus on them individually. Sure she wants to fly faster and lift stronger, but the potential to protect multiple people in one bubble is her absolute driving goal. The first time a holo-episode includes a collateral human or pet getting injured from her actions, though ... she breaks down hard. Like days of focus training regressed from anziety attacks when innocents are too close to whatever she's doing.

(next part about Kat is cleared up that Kat is cognoscente enough of the triggers to not go there)

As for Kat's prickliness ... Shanice is used to constipated teammates on the rag. She doesn't take it personal, especially when it's becoming apparent from the adults that it's related to her powers, and she's really a super intelligent Moriarty agitator. At that point, once she can put a name to what she's seeing, she's duely impressed watching the genius work, and more able to let the barbs slide.

When it comes to team exercises, Shanice is always ready to pull some desperate move trying to save the YOLO ferret, but honestly she does that for everyone. Shanice does get frustrated when it's team exercises falling apart, though. She will call out Kat when it's legit Kat's fault, but always strictly professional, always about the objective, never even remotely personal. And she will be just fine with Kat rebutaling as long as it's about the objective and not personal, and can also ignore personal attacks to a point if she can rationalize it as Kat having tourettes rather than actual malice.

If it turns into pranks, though ... into anything construed as a cowardly bully move to make fun of her in an unbalanced personal way ... that would break her. She really does have PTSD in terms of bullying and pranks and there's a long list of triggers. Unfortunately, that includes pranks that no one else is likely to notice till it's too late are going wrong, like if someone had chalked erasors over the door that no one realized till it was too late she was seeing it as a white blotched black skin visual gags. She would spend another day in her room socially catatonic if the pendant itself still didn't change her own teammates betraying her and making fun of her flaws.

_____

Rob: There's no hiding Shanice has a crush on Rob. She knows it, but she'd be the last creature on earth to realize everyone else knows it, too. Or other teens might be failing that perception-of-the-obvious roll, too, like Rob himself, dunno. The first time they met was him walking in on her naked changing, and he didn't make it weird or have any negative reaction at all. And that about sealed the deal with all the answers for her. He's apparently the only cis-het male on earth. All the other males are friendly, gay robots. She probably doesn't have a chance, but ... well ... he's the only one on earth, so ...

Caelian: What's not to like about a giant fezzik teddy-hagrid? She's completely comfortable with a supportive hug or leaning against him, especially if he's having a self-image-problem day. She can see the pain in him around the funeral. She offers to go if like ... teammates going is a thing and ... dunno, um ... if he wants ... she can dig a huge grave in one move and hold all the ground up then put it back perfectly .... probably.

When Kat calls Caelian Large, Shanice can't help but go through the ENTIRE list of Big McLargeHuge names from MST3K Space Mutiny during exercises or a chance to make them all watch the episode. Hopefully she can get Caelian to laugh or she'd be a terrible person and hide it till he's away. They really are terms of endearment and awesomeness, not meant to by bully names.

Jason: Fun to have another flyer to compete with, and even more randomness with his shapes than she can think up with her bubbles. And PUPPEH! She's legit happy for him getting his puppers back.

Samuel: Might not be often, but can really get into neat discussions with him on sci-fi or steampunk or nerdy stuff.

Kat: Can appreciate watching her 'work.' Does giggle at the stories that invariably follow every time the adults are duped into letting her out into public. Isn't avoiding, but isn't actively trying to get closer, and definitely isn't trying to get in her way. But unless something goes notably south, Shanice is amicable. As much as Shanice loves her pendant, the attention to it might be confusing or weird. But hopefully at some point it will click and Shanice will extrapolate out that Kat has been actively avoiding tender topics. That would actually spawn a kind of liking her. Like an "aww, you murdered fewer kittens today because it's ms. cleaver's birthday .. that's so sweet of you. you really do care." Shanice literally just one day is nicer to Kat and less bothered by anything she does, even when it complicates something for the team. She'd even be more likely to defend Kat now and then.

Constance: When Shanice went into shock seeing her new supernormie image, Constance was the first to give her a hug and help talk her through it. In Shanices world, hugs are a family thing. The 75yo+ church lady contingent gave hugs, too, but that's about it. So that made an impression on her that Constance was a loyal teammate and good person. She's comfortable around her, including contact.

Follow-Up:

Calling Kat out for her lack of team trust is an exercise in frustration, in itself--her counter-measures are purely verbal (no pranking the teammates), but she isn't above being mean about it. That said, she isn't going for the kill, either, so certain topics are, at least for now, off-limits: Caelian's dad and Shanice's 'natural' appearance both falling into that category. In Shanice's case, in particular, she's more likely to go the opposite route, speaking derisively of the holo-cloak rather than Shanice's actual coloration.

Nicknames are used without regard for how the person so dubbed feels about it:
Rob: Easy Street, or just Easy (It's interesting that her take so closely mimics Tamar's warnings about him relying on his powers too much. Even once he bears down, she continues using the nickname.)
Caelian: Large (this is said with a more gentle tone than most--she's apparently settled on him as the most trustworthy one in the group.)
Jason: Muttley (Normally, Jason is just regarded as another teammate, but she adores his dog, and thus he often gets more of a pass than the others.)
Samuel: Perv, Perv-Boy, Wet Dream (She is NEVER going to forget their first meeting, nor let him do so)
Shanice: Bubbles
Constance: Blondie

Faculty Nicknames (oh, yes, she goes there regularly):
Tamar: Hot Momma
Esperanza: Glitz or Glam
Helios: Gramps, Old School
Zoe: Frankie, Morrie, Jecklyn... yeah, Kat knows her classic mad doctors, and pretty much just feminizes all the names
Caleb: Yup, Sgt. Spook. If talking to him directly, it almost always is combined with the 'military academy cadet' routine she used on their first day of training.

Shanice eventually approaches Esperanza, when both of them are in their native modes. By this point Shanice is perfectly comfortable and confident as long as she's down here, most likely to be showing a lot of skin. She's always been hesitant, almost fearful of approaching Esperanza, but in her speaking tone and "Ma'am" politeness, it's clear that she's never been close to a super rich celebrity ... not worried about the mafia (or showing any sign she's aware of that) or afraid of a powerful superling.

"Ma'am ... if it's not to personal and stuff ..." more of her nervous tick, her left hand going to her left ear slowly scratching or pressing in front of it. "What was it like before you had your pendant? ... Like ... how did you do it?"

“The problem with just usin’ an image inducer, Kat, is that it doesn’t provide you any protection,” Tamar pointed out.

“Like this,” Esper said, reaching behind her.

“No!” Tamar said suddenly, stepping between Esper and Katt. “Yer not gonna shoot her to demonstrate!”

“Can I shoot you?” Esper asked, smiling at Tamar.

Tamar rolled her eyes. “That belt idea ain’t half bad,” she mused. “Ah mean, Ah could give her a flouncy little skirt.”

“So...panty shots and fan service?” Esper asked, grinning as Tamar blushed deep red.

***

Esperanza made it a point to turn off her image inducer when she was down in the bunker with the kids. She realized it helped Shanice feel more normal. But where Shanice was a total hardbody, Esperanza’s mutation seemed to make her all curves, the epitome of female beauty expressed in a Greek marble statue, though she certain was in shape and muscled.

Esper looked up from the Wall Street Journal when Shanice approached and asked her about her time before the locket.

“I was lucky,” Esper admitted. “I didn’t physically change until my mutation came in fully. So after they made sure I wouldn’t sink Miami into the Gulf, I got the image inducer,” she explained.

She gestured to Shanice to sit down. “Look, kid. I’ll be level with you. I tend to give things straight. You want hand holding and hugs, that’s Tamar’s department. You’re purple. Great. That device isn’t going to change that. It can hide it, make it more convenient. But it doesn’t change it. You’ll always know. So the sooner you get comfortable with that, the better your life will be. You can wallow in being the PURPLE People Eater, or you can be the Purple People EATER, you understand? You take whatever they throw at you, eat it up, and spit it right back at them.” Esper leaned back, taking a sip of her latte. “I watched some of your games,” she said. “On that field, no one cared what you looked like. You scored goals. You earned their respect. No one is going to give that to you. And in that moment, it didn’t matter. Not to you; not to them. So be confident. Strut that hardbod. You’re a mutant, girl. No one can hold you down.”

Caelian decided that visiting his home was another step in closure and he had asked Dr. Helios for some help in getting the house cleaned and ready for sale. It had, after all sat for a few months without any activity other than the couch being moved.

Dr. Helios had made arrangements for Caelian to close up affairs with his childhood home.

Caelian had been working on an appropriate alias while in his large form. His search of family records and histories pointed out that most of the Blythe men were dead, their wives having either remained widowed or remarried. It came down to cousins, distant cousins. And he settled on one whose whereabouts had been lost not confirmed dead.

Since the cosuin in question would be in his late thirties, Caelian figured it would not be greatly questioned if that was the name he used. In his large form he goes by Gàidheal Blythe.

Sidebar _
Caelian's dad never married.
Because 'Blythe' was concerned about the 'curse' in the family, he never even had girlfriends or even one night stands.

Caelian was actually delivered to 'Blythe' as an infant. Predecessors to Nexus had delivered the child to 'Blythe' and 'Blythe' had retired from the Compettive Mixed Martial Arts arenas.

Caelian is actually the lost cousin, Gàidheal.

When Gàidheal began experienceing some mutant like effects, he sought out a few groups that were studying and experimenting with newly discovered mutants. An accident in an administered serum, actually caused a reverse in genetics. Gàidheal became an infant twenty five years of life was reversed, introducing amenisia related to a form that could not handle the grownup memories.

Caelian is actually a thrity nine year old man, a mutant, trapped in a fourteen year old body.
Memories of a previous life?
Returning to a previous life?
Will his body and mind catch up to his actual age and experiences?
Gàidheal Blythe showed up to Caelian's boyhood home with three watchers from the academy and a hired cleaning company and landscaping crew. Neighboors came and Gàidheal explained that he was Caelian's next of kin and produced some legal documents when asked. He graciously informed those who asked that Caelian had been accepted to a private school and needed to close up affairs in his home town.

The housecleaning took a couple of days and the landscapers an entire week. Blythe and his watchers took care of repairs on the home and had the home ready to be sold by week's end. Blythe sold everything from inside the house, except some valuable keepsakes from his father 'Blythe'.

There was a firesafe box, a few trophies, and some framed pictures. These were the only items that Caelian kept. One of the watchers found the medal.
KahlessNestor wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2019 3:08 amCaelian receives his father’s first prize fight medal, the one he had accidentally broken as a child and that had been thrown away. It looks brand new.

The medal had been broken purely by accident. During a particular power lifting broadcast, when Caelian was maybe eight or nine he had snapped the medal in half while flexing.

His father had laughed and suggested that if Caelian was intent on flexing in the future, he do it with a dumbbell or barbell in hand. Caelian had asked why and his father had said, "They are designed to take the stress and rigors of hard exercise."

The firesafe box had concerned Caelian, in that leaving with something like that in broad daylight would cause suspicions. He had told the neighbors that everything else was being sold, except some souvernirs and old photos. The watcher who had found the broken medal, mentioned that they could place the safe in a hidden place, until they got back to the academy. Caelian had agreed.

With the "estate sale" completed and the box of photos, trophies, and albums already in his room at the academy, Caelian set about putting the house up for sale. To do this he had approached Esperanza asked for access to one of her families subsidary companies. A company that was loosely tied to the Romans but certainly, in speculation only, could be linked to Caelian or the academy.

Being in the bunker, she's in running shorts, a black sportbra, and half tank. There isn't much purple she /isn't/ showing. She's getting closer to military ramrod posture and her body confidence is pretty solid overall.

"Ever rethink sinking south Florida? You'd be really popular with central and north Florida. Maybe just break it off and move it down a bit."

Sits.

"Yeah, lucky." Looks Esper over. "I don't need hugs and hand stuff. You're really pretty, but I'm only in to boys." No intonation, just matter-of-factness. "I'm not hiding from being purple. Imchan was Dr. Helios's thing to hide me on his campus. I get it." Shrug.

" ... You .. saw my games? ... Did you have the sound turned up and hear the spectators? 'Zebra', 'Heffer', 'Patches', they're all in the stands calling me that. That's what Imchan's saving me from. ... This is my first time ever being a girl on campus instead of God's little Joke adults have to keep explaining."

"I know everyone down here is cool with me being purple." Looks at her hands rubbing her thumb over a section on the back of her other hand. "The shapes are changing, too. A little bit ... after really hard workouts .. and my hair's getting lighter. .. Do you still change? I mean not like being old but like mutanty stuff?"

KahlessNestor wrote: “The problem with just usin’ an image inducer, Kat, is that it doesn’t provide you any protection,” Tamar pointed out.

When Esper seems to be reaching for a weapon, Kat shows no fear--she just drops into the position Caleb's taught them for a ranged attacker--twisted to the side one foot forward and then crouching a bit, so as to present the smallest possible profile, and in her case, hands out, ready to hurl a Hex. Then Tamar intervenes, and she relaxes, though she's got a distinctly hostile expression on her face as she glares at Esper.

Then she relaxes. "Don't sweat it, Hot Momma, Glitz's just upset that you're relating to the token Rebellious Youth better than she is. I'd like something a bit longer in drop-mode than just a 'little' skirt, but I think you're on the right idea. Thicker belt means longer skirt--if it gets to my knees, then it can go over the skinsuit pretty nicely--skirt over tights doesn't look whorish, and there's no skin even if someone does get the odd upskirt shot. I don't suppose the colors are negotiable?" As she speaks, she takes Tamar by the arm and leads her off, talking amiably about options that might work to address her complaints--still wearing the leather jacket, of course.

Physical training for Jason was rough. He did not put much stock in physical activity and was constantly behind the rest of the group if he wasn’t using powers. However every time he fell he picked himself back up and kept going. His regen helped with the worst of the scrapes from errors he would make. Despite everything he pushed through and made the best of it.
OOC Comments
No skill ups for physical training as he simply felt the physical activity could be handled as an animal.

Academic training for Jason goes a bit differently altogether. He puts a lot of thought into his studies and science using it to help him learn new animals to imitate. He works hard in his studies and usually read more than necessary about the material to ensure a good grasp. He was not keen on homework but usually managed to race through it at the last minute.
OOC Comments
Skill ups Science to d8, academics to d6

Powers training was fun he flew he changed shapes into varieties of animals. He would read about the animal one day its habitats and all about its behaviors and then the next day the instructors would bring him the animal to study and imitate allowing him to touch it and learn how it moved. This was by far his favorite part of the school and he took to it well. When they learned he had regenerative powers, that was less fun. Mostly they tested it with small cuts and bruises but they taught him to better focus his energy to help the wounds close.

Jason didn’t have parents to speak of but his grandmother was happy with the meeting. Kibbles was a bit much for her to take care of on her own. She was a bit senile and Jason was pretty sure she didn’t understand a word that people were saying to her. Regardless she beamed at the thought of him being in so prestigious a school. The reunion between Jason and Kibbles was joyous they ran to each other at first sight. Jason let Kibbles bowl him over tackling him. She licked his face while he squirmed feigning a desire for her to stop.

Jason and Kibbles went home for Thanksgiving and Christmas as he didn’t want his Grandma to be alone. He helped her make dinner and watched a bunch of holiday movies while the three of them, dog included, cuddled on the couch. They all spent some loving time together without a worry or care about training or studies.

He was very thankful for the gift from Dr. Helios he only felt slightly bad for glueing his coffee cup to the desk in his office. Upon returning from the trip he brought the doctor a new souvenir cup from the Carribbean smiling a bit sheepishly as he handed it to him.

"Ever rethink sinking south Florida? You'd be really popular with central and north Florida. Maybe just break it off and move it down a bit," Shanice said.

Esperanza smiled. “Tempting, but I already have my own private Caribbean island,” she said with amusement. “And I have family down there. Company HQ.” The mention of family was a bit tense, though.

“You're really pretty, but I'm only into boys," Shanice said.

Esper laughed. “You’re a little underage for me,” she said. “But give it a few years and then talk to me,” she teased.

Esper sipped her latte as she listened to Shanice. “There will always be people who say such things,” she told the teen. “But they don’t mean anything, and it doesn’t matter to most when you’re saving their life. It’s their problem. And if they try to do something about it, you make it a bigger problem for them.”

Esperanza leaned forward. “Being a mutant is all about dealing with change, Shanice,” she said. “I don’t change much anymore. I’m basically stone now, even like this.” She used a diamond-looking fingernail to puncture the white skin on the back of her wrist. Even her blood was white. “I don’t even think I do age. But your powers changing or growing? Yes, that can happen. Probably will a lot at first. It’s like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. But a lot of it is also up here.” She tapped the side of her head. “Thinking about the applications, the things you can do with your powers. It’s about as much as how you can effect the world around you with your powers as what you can do with them.”

Shanice doesn't seem bothered by Esper's flirting at all. She's fascinated by the stoneblood demonstration.

She catches the tension when mentioning family, since everything else about Esper is so completely untense. Shanice glances around for anyone else in range and lowers her voice and leans in a bit. "It's cool. I know all about the mob family stuff. Could be way worse ... like a family of ambulance chasers or politicians." And otherwise is perfectly amicable and chill since that's finally out of the way.

______

In the week following the funeral, while he and Shanice are training, @Highlander Caelian takes a moment between sets, "Thanks for agreeing to come with me to my father's funeral. You and other teens are the closest thing to family that I have. I appreciated your company."

Shanice smiles, fistbump. "Gotta stick to family, especially the ones ya ain't related to. My dad's army bro's are my uncles, big time. But even my teammates ... it's like ... maybe it doesn't matter who it is that goes along, but someone's gotta go along. ... I'm glad it was me. Plus workouts suck without a partner."

(sidethought: Shanice asked if Helios had any black handlers to be one of the three going with Caelian. That way there'd definitely be nothing suspicious about 'an adult mourner's daughter attending.')

Tamar is with Caelian as he opens up the fire safe box. It took a bit more heat than muscle to get into. Caelian had tried to tamper with box, through his new found technical ineptitude, ie device failure, but it hadn't worked.

Box Contents
  • Last Will and Testament
    Trust Fund Information
    Investments
    Several Life Insurance Policies
    Extensive Genealogy Records
    External Hard Drive
Caelian pulls out and looks at everything except the External Hard Drive.
KahlessNestor wrote: Thu Oct 17, 2019 2:08 am Dr. Helios pulled something else from a pocket and handed it to Caelian. It was a gold Rolex. “Press this button to activate,” he told the large boy. “It will shut down your powers and you will revert to your former teenage form. Press again to turn the suppressor off and enlarge again.” He paused. “Unfortunately your clothes won’t size with you,” he told Caelian. “You might want to carry spares.”
Caelian nodded to Tamar to pull the hard drive from the box. "Just put it on the desk next to the Doctor's Rolex."

Anyone looking around Caelian's room notices that it is devoid of technology and electronic gadgets. "My McLarge form reacts very poorly with technology. Not certain of my teen age form."

Tamar waves a hand at the comment and has Caelian read through some of the documents. With a quizical look on his face Tamar explains that 'Blythe' took out several insurance policies over the years. Hefty investments as well. The will simply states that at age 18, Caelian would have access to all benefits from the life insurance policies and the investments would have reached maturity and would be availble for him to do with as he pleased.

Constance was a challenge to train, because she was pretty lackadaisical about it. For someone that had as much time as she needed, ever, that made a kind of sense. Even so, it wasn't until Caleb outlawed the use of her powers outside specific 'powers training' that things got real. No longer able to simply 'redshift' and easily avoid sparring attacks, or trot around obstacles at a leisurely pace while still breaking speed records, Chance had to actually work for it...and she took to it surprisingly well. The first order of business was tackling her woeful lack of self-defense skills. Forbidden her ability to lock people in time, she had to basically start from scratch. And yet, there was a streak of iron inside her that kept her from giving up just because things weren't easy anymore. Part of it was seeing the other kids and noting their progress. Part of it was just for herself.

Scholastically she was already talented, and kept up her grades just fine. With her increased workload in physical education and training, this was deemed sufficient...for now. Constance's test scores were adequate, but every teacher made the same note that she wasn't working 'to her potential.' It seemed to her that the best course of action was making sure she couldn't just be overpowered and taken captive again first, then polish her grammar and algebra skills.

It was powers training where things got wacky though. Constance already had a lot of control over her abilities, with one notable exception. Every so often a 'double' of her would show up. Sometimes they would just watch. Sometimes they'd yell 'hints.' And sometimes they'd just join in the fun. None of them were particularly inclined to explain in detail where they were from or why they were there. More than once, a doppelganger would appear and actually give Constance tips about how to use her powers, even. They never stayed long though, and that was considered no great loss by her trainers. Beyond that, Chance had all the powers she'd demonstrated before during the breakout. She could accelerate or decelerate objects and people in time, relative to other reference frames. She could even injure people by partially accelerating them, causing part of their body to go out of 'sync' with the rest. When she accelerated herself, what she called 'redshifting,' Constance appeared to move so quickly and unpredictably that she became all but invisible, save for momentary flashes when she stopped moving long enough to register. That made her incredibly evasive, and under skilled tutelage she learned to deliver punches or kicks in that accelerated framework, causing blows to land with the speed of machinegun bullets.

Her visit home was...difficult to say the least though. Constance's mother was still mostly bedridden, and while the school had helped procure a nurse to help, it was hard not being there for her. Fortunately her mother was tough-minded as well, and couldn't stop telling her how proud she was, and how things were just fine. They bonded too over their shared memories of her dad, and how they wished he could be there to see her. Constance gave her mom her new phone number before leaving, assuring her that if she needed help for any reason she could call. Constance knew she could get there very quickly...at least from an outside perspective. For the moment, Constance asked that her mother not be told about mutants and powers and so on. For one, she was afraid of how it might impact her mother's condition...for another, since she wouldn't be around to protect her, Chance was afraid that her knowing too much would put her at risk.

It was later on, at Christmas, that Constance got her gift from the headmaster and faculty.

Seeing that, Constance felt as if her world shifted two degrees to the left. She immediately redshifted and ran through the campus between the statues of other students under the dim red disk of the sun until she reached the headmaster's office and returning to the normal flow of time. She rapped her knuckles on the door.

"Dr. Helios? It's Constance, can I come in? I...got your present. Can we talk about it?"

Seeing how everyone else approaches being trained Volo thinks to himself. Do i really want to be one of those guys that goes halfway and does not finish? The answer of course is no. No one asks themselves this questions without thinking about it deeply.

With that in mind he sinks into the training fully. Always trying to increase his athletic potential, his hand to hand skills and his shooting skills by training against the best on the team. Loosing sucks but it is needed.

When it comes time to leave and visit his mom Rob is not as excited as most of the people. He has made a point of visiting his mom every day, so one more trip is not as exciting for him as it is for some. Thanksgiving was not a big holiday for Rob, truth was he never really got into the holidays. When they were poor the holidays just meant getting jealous and not that he had been able to help with that then the traditions where already gone.

However seeing some of the team mates had little to do made Rob realized he was lucky to a great extent. He tried to invite them to come with him on event or hang out. After all he did not want to be alone all week, but he likewise did not want to hang out with his mom either. After all what kind of american teenager would he be if he spent all his time with his mom. Heading to the theater they instead caught a few movies before seeing about some outdoors activity. Maybe a quick jaunt to Hawaii to enjoy a hike around the caldera and then a trip to the Netherlands for a crepe breakfast.

The door was already swinging open when Constance started knocking and announcing her presence.

“Come in, Miss Abels,” Dr. Paul Helios said, sitting behind his big desk. He gestured to a chair. “Or would you prefer the couch? Can I get you something to drink?” He got up to head to a sidebar with an electric tea kettle and the makings for tea or coffee. “I also have soda and juice if you prefer.” The bar also had windowed doors revealing an assortment of select fine adult beverages, aged scotch, brandy, fine wine, and the like, though clearly he wouldn’t be offering that to a student. “There are also some of Ms. Todd’s delicious brownies.” He smiled at Constance. “I admit, I wasn’t expecting you so soon,” he had to tell her with a chuckle.

It didn’t take long after Sam’s call for there to be a knock on his door. “Hi-ee!” the blonde teen greeted Sam’s mom when she answered the door. “I’m Jenny! Sam’s girlfriend. He texted, wanted a hook up?” She giggled. “I mean, hook up and go grab a holiday movie!” She rolled her beautiful blue eyes and snapped her gum. “Totally not that kind of hook up! Of course not! SAMMY!”

Sam recognized Jenny, though she was all done up to look younger, hair in a ponytail, tight sweater, black leather jacket, tight leggings. She ran over and hugged him.

“It’s Chase,” she whispered. “You called?”

“C’mon, Sammy! We don’t wanna miss the previews! Bye-ee, Sam’s mom and dad!” And she dragged Sam out the door to her black Dodge Charger.

“You called for an extraction?” Jenny asked, dropping the teenage ditz act, tossing her gum out the window. She’d done a good job turning twenty-something into sixteen with a car. “Oh, we should sell this to your mom,” she said, and then she gave Sam a big kiss.

“I admit, I wasn’t expecting you so soon,” he had to tell her with a chuckle.

She took out the picture and held it up so Helios could see it.

"This is from you, right?" Constance asked, bypassing the invitations to sit, the offers of food, and the confession of unpreparedness. She tapped the image, pointing out the older man in the back; the one who looked like Dr Helios. "So you have time powers, kind of like mine...and now this guy's showing up in my family picture. He's older than you, but it doesn't look like a family resemblance to me. So...what's the deal?"

Sam says to his parents, "This is Jenny Chase, a fellow student from the special class. We have a few things in common."

Sam's father mumbles something about the things they have in common including social ineptitude, which Sam hears but does not repeat.

When Chase kisses him, he kisses her back, but in the way you kiss someone to thank them, not the way you kiss someone you are dating. He then hugs her and says in her ear, "There is a girl living in the house across our back fence. Her name is Jenny Montgomery and I think she has been altered. The way she was writing about me in her blog, she considers me an inhuman monster and a clear and present danger to humanity. She might have reason to dislike me, but not like that."

Chase is supposed to be a telepath, she should be able to check into it.

CONSTANCE

Dr. Helios took the picture and peered at the man in the painting behind the family shot of Constance’s parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents on their wedding day.

“Ah, yes. I believe that is your great-great-grandfather,” he said. “What name was I going by at that time?” he mused. “Ah, yes. Alexander Demetrios. That was taken shortly after I left His Majesty’s army, after the Great War,” he told Constance. “Your parents were a beautiful couple, by the way,” he told the teen as he handed the picture back. “I think there is something of a family resemblance, Granddaughter.”

***

SAM

Jenny/Chase started the car and drove around the corner out of sight. Then she turned to look at Sam. “So you didn’t, like, turn her down for a date or something?” she asked Sam. “How would she know about you? And what do you want me to do about her?” She considered. “I could get Shadow to disappear her,” she mused. “I hear pigs are very good with bodies.”

Sam replies, lost in memories, "We were friends once, but once I started being interested in girls, I started fumbling my words. I wound up insulting her quite a bit and lost her as a friend. I have never managed to get past that."

He snaps out of it at the question of disappearing her, "No! She may be altered, but that is not her fault. She SHOULDN'T know about me, that is why I think she has been changed."

Of course, it is possible those who took me used mundane means to convince Jenny about what I am, Sam reminds himself. Not everything has to be done using mind altering technology.

Admittedly, he is not really happy with suggesting Chase read someone's mind, but he can not see any other way.

I could break in and get to her, but I don’t need to meet some angry father with a shotgun. Or someone calling the police. Do you know which window is hers? I could get in when she goes to bed.”

Chase studied the model. “Okay. I can get it. Convenient trellis here. Really shouldn’t put those outside a teenage girl’s room,” she said with a grin. “I’ll go now. Wait here.” Chase grabbed a bag from the back and pulled out a stun gun, slipping it into the back of her pants. Then she pulled on a black hoodie and black gloves, and started back around the corner toward the house.

Sam waits, if we were closer he would send a remote, but as it is he has nothing to do but keep alert. After all, if the other Jenny was sending a message to someone, there is likely to be some kind of response.

People who do not have powers often misunderstand how versatile something like Sam's power is. It may lack in raw power, but if he can picture something well enough and it is small enough, he can make it.

As Sam waited, his phone rang. When he answered, Jenny/Chase’s voice came through. “Figured you might want to listen in,” she said. “I’m going up the trellis.”

He could hear her breathing through the mike as she climbed. “Looks like she’s getting ready for bed. You want pics?” Chase teased. “Opening the window. As I thought, she doesn’t keep it locked.”

There were more sounds, and then a shriek, and Jenny’s voice. “Who are you?”

“Just a friend,” Chase said.

“Get out of my house! I’ll scream!”

“No one’s home.”

“I’ll--I’ll call the cops!”

Chase sighed. There was a sound of electricity, and then a loud thump.

“She’s okay,” Chase reassured Sam over the phone. “Her computer’s on.” There was some sound, like a keyboard. “The blog again. Yeah. If this is Nexus, they’re being sloppy. Did you ever practice out in the yard or anything where she could see you?” she asked. “Okay. I’ve deleted the blog. I’ll check her out now.”

Then the line grew silent, except for Chase’s breathing.

Sam replied, "I kept my practice to in the shed, where it could not be seen...well after I learned to control it at least. I mean, I was in my room at home when it first happened, I had to pretend to be sick and stay there in my room until I learned to keep things under control. I do not think anyone saw me then, though my window is on that side of the house the curtain was closed..."

He made sure the curtain was closed, under the circumstances. Possibly if someone was looking in his window before he woke up that day, but it was still dark when he did.

While the others work on straightening out their personal lives and such, Kat takes a little time to regroup, then begins snooping around the base. In particular, she sees how much access they have to the monitor room; if it's fairly unrestricted, she spends a lot of time in there, seemingly just watching the day-to-day activities of the students they'll soon be joining.

In reality, though, she's got something else in mind--she's not interested in the people, nor even so much in the campus proper--but rather, in the cameras. She's trying to figure out areas on campus that have at least some degree of privacy, other than the actual dorm rooms. Closets, dead spots between cameras, the woods outside--anyplace a student could be out of view, at least for a little while.

SAM

“Okay,” Chase acknowledged. “Give me a bit. I’m going in her head.” The line went silent then.

“Shit,” came over the line eventually. “Kid, you got lucky. She’s definitely compromised. She’s got a nice little psychic virus in her head with instructions to call a number if she saw you again. I can take care of it, but we should get you back to campus. We’ll be more thorough in the security check at Christmas,” she promised.

KAT

As Kat poked around the monitoring room, she found most of the screens weren’t usually on. The cameras ran and recorded, but apparently they were for review if something happened, or if something was happening, but no one tended to watch every minute of campus life. She caught a few nice candids -- the jock and the cheerleader tongue wrestling in the fieldhouse might have gone on to blocked website levels if they hadn’t been interrupted. There seemed to be a general lack of awareness of some of the cameras, indicating that many might have been well-hidden.

“And just what are you looking for?” Caleb asked, dropping his hand on Kat’s shoulder before taking a seat beside her and watching her flip through the cameras on the monitors.

Sam says to himself, You are not paranoid if someone IS out to get you.

Out loud, he responds, "Check to see if she already called the number. I expect she has, but we could be lucky."

It is going to be annoying cutting Thanksgiving short. He starts working on an acceptable excuse to make for his parents. The irony is, it will be harder since they met this version of Chase. Any excuse he makes will have to include something that precludes their sleeping together or he might not be allowed to go.

Kat jumps, just a little, when Caleb puts his hand on her, but recovers pretty quickly. "Well," she says with a smile that wouldn't melt butter, "I was curious as to just how big Big Brother really is.". She looks back at the screens, fiddling with the dials. "And I can't say there isn't a certain amount of amusement to be had watching it all. Besides," she adds, almost as an afterthought, "it helps to get a feel for the layout of the campus. A delinquent like me always liked to know the lay of the land.".

Constance blinked rapidly, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. Her stomach roiled and she didn't know how to feel. But she did feel how to feel.

"Are you kidding me?" she said quietly. Then snapped the second, "Are you KIDDING me?!"

"When were you planning to TELL me about this?! I just...I can't..."

Chance turned half away, putting a hand up to her forehead in unconscious imitation of her mother.

"Okay. Okay I...can't really deal with this, I don't think. Grand, great-great-grand...whatever." She took a deep breath. "You can time travel. So...you must know how my dad died. Or if you don't you can find out. Take me with you is all I ask."

SAM

Chase was silent for a time, then her voice came again. “Doesn’t look like she has,” she reported. “I’m deleting the contact information. There. Looks like you got lucky, kid. You might not be compromised yet. How attached is your family to this house?” she asked. “Maybe we could relocate them.”

There was some sound of movement and such, a bit of grunting. “I’ve gotten her changed and into bed. I’m going to work on erasing her.”

***

KAT

Kat found that pretty much all public areas were covered very well. After all, the school seemed to have a lot of money to afford enough cameras that there weren’t blind spots. Only the locker rooms and individual dorm rooms didn’t have cameras. All the dorm hallways did, though.

“If there is nothing that happens, we have no reason to be Big Brother,” Caleb said, sitting down in the chair beside Kat. “Why do you feel the need to find out?” he asked. “We’ve been honest with you. And you missed the best part.” He smiled at her and selected a few cameras, ones that hadn’t come up when Kat was fiddling around.

“This is Chicago. It’s cold in the winter. So the original campus had tunnels connecting all the buildings for crossing campus in the winter,” he told her. “We sealed them up and kept them secret, so once you’re in the dorms, you can get down here from just about any building.” He flipped through the cameras showing the tunnels, warm and lit. They looked a bit like subway tunnels, tiled, but in better condition. There was no graffiti or public urination and defecation.

Caleb stopped at one camera showing a maintenance door. “This is the campus side access to this bunker,” he said. “Behind the wall sign marking the door is a scanner that will recognize your ID badge, so don’t lose it.”

***

CHANCE

Dr. Helios looked at Constance sympathetically. “I heard about his death, yes,” he said. “I like to keep tabs on my...family, but I generally keep my distance. It causes complications. But when you developed similar powers to my own, I knew I would be needed. Especially when Nexus stepped in.”

He sighed, and then continued. “Why do you think your father’s death was anything than what was reported, Constance?” he asked. “I haven’t looked into it,” he admitted. “I never felt the need. I can travel in the past, yes, but you can’t change it, Constance. It is...dangerous.” He tapped the photograph. “This was my way of telling you. But I didn’t time travel. I lived it.”

"You say you've been honest, but I don't really have any means to double-check, do I? Self-referential vouching doesn't really mean much. And you'll have to forgive me if that sounded a little like, 'If you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to hide,' which is the refrain of every police state, everywhere." She pauses. "Yeesh, you guys even have cameras set up in the woods?" She shakes her head a bit, but then nods as she's shown the tunnels. Then she blinks. "Wait. You're telling me that the hangar, that is almost impossible to enter without a submersible vehicle, has a biometric scanner, but the door that a non-special class student could just come across has a scanner that only requires a badge? Shouldn't that be the one that's keyed so no one but us can get in, badge or no badge?" She thinks about it. "Heck, in a real emergency, it'd be a shame if one of us had lost our badge and couldn't get in."

She turns one of the dials to set a camera to the phys ed building. "No students are wearing badges while in PE, for good reason--clip-ons would drop off constantly, and lanyards make good accidental strangle-cords. So I assume that everyone leaves their badges in their lockers. So if something goes down while we're in PE, rather than making a bee-line for the door down, we first have to go to the locker, pop it open, grab the badge, and then head down? Seems like a vulnerability. And heaven forbid the situation--say, a bomb or something--takes out the locker room itself. No badges, and other than Constance and Shanice, you're waiting for the rest of us to jog here the long way round." He has to admit, for all Kat's attitude, she does have a knack for imagining horrible scenarios, and how to deal with them.

When Kat commented about the cameras in the woods, Caleb looked at her. “Would you prefer we had no security in the area easiest to infiltrate campus undetected so any enemies could be on us immediately without us knowing?” he asked her. “The cameras are not here to monitor students,” he told her. “That may be ancillarily useful if someone breaks into your dorm room and steals your go stash,” he told Kat, “but it is there primarily to give us a way to track anyone who trips the proximity alarms on the perimeter walls.”

Caleb sighed as he went off on her horrible scenario. “Your ID badges are special,” he told Kat. “They have biometrics in them. So do your training uniforms. And yes, there are biometrics at the door in case you forget your badge. If you’re going through horrible scenarios, why not include someone cutting off your hand and digging out your eye to get past the biometrics, hmm? If we’re going to be dramatic.”

“Don’t be givin’ the girl nightmares, Caleb!” Tamar scolded as she came in with a plate of grilled cheese and hot chocolate, sitting them down next to Kat. “Findin’ anythin’ interestin’?” she asked Kat. “Or are ya jus’ lookin’ at the boys gettin’ done with practice?” she teased, as one of the cameras switched to outside the locker room where the basketball and wrestling teams were peeling off their shirts and heading in to change after practice.

She shrugs at Caleb. "I don't think 'stages attack at an inconvenient time' is any less imaginative than 'stages an attack from the woods. And you apparently don't, either, since you just noted that we can get through the door without the badges in a pinch."

She grins at Tamar when the woman interrupts. "Don't worry, Hot Momma, he's just annoyed to meet someone as paranoid as he is. He probably thought he had the top spot in that all sewn up." She then makes a face at the notion of checking out the guys. "Meh. I'd rather curl up with a good book. Or even a bad one."

Caelian is never without the ring. Either it is in his pocket when he is Gaidheal or on his finger as Caelian.

GYM

Caelian finds himself here often and spends equal amounts of time training as Caelian and Gaidheal. No one seems to ask him why he does it that way, but to Caelian it is obvious that one never knows what situation one will find oneself in.

As Gaidheal he apologizes to Caleb everytime he knocks Caleb into a wall. But there is something, satisfying about having a punch, kick, or toss connect. He does manage to perfect getting Caleb into the most padded wall.

One other thing as Gaidheal, that he notices is that he can absorb damage. Finding that Caleb would approach him far quicker than his own reflexes could compensate, Caelian took a flurry of blows and felt very little in the way of pain. He started leaning into the blows to get accustomed to the feel, and found that he really didn't feel much at all.

After one particular match, Caelian asked Caleb, "Are you pulling punches when I am in this big form, like you do when I am in my small form?"

IMPROVED - ATHLETICS d8
IMPROVED - FIGHTING d6

REC ROOM

Caelian would often join @Winger in the rec room, watching the big screen TV during some sporting event or another. They would often joke about the success of a particular player, team, or event. Caelian listened intently when Shanice spoke about certain sports, particularly the ones he was not familiar with.

He was careful in placing his bets. Caelian placed a few bets a week, using the stipend. He didn't really want for anything and really had no need for much monetarily. With Tamara's help he set up some accounts that got routed through several different locations, but were secure enough to keep his earnings from his winning bets from falling into the wrong hands.

He was underage but not naive. He was certain that a well crafted life insurance policy or several would serve him well. For now he just found the best savings accounts possible and secured as much funds as he possibly could. He made sure to keep everything strictly legal and to draw no further attention to himself or the academy.

KAT

“Margaret Atwood?” Tamar asked, tilting her head. “No, Ah don’t think Ah’ve heard of her. What’s she write?”

CAELIAN

"Are you pulling punches when I am in this big form, like you do when I am in my small form?" Caelian asked.

Caleb picked himself up. The shadows seemed to gather around him, and the latest bruise forming from Caelian’s last blow started to fade away. “Not anymore,” he said. He walked over and flipped off the lights, plunging the gym into darkness, blinding Caelian. “Let’s try it my way.”

When Caleb hit Caelian next, it hurt a lot more!

When Caleb hit Caelian next, it hurt a lot more!
When the lights drop out, Caelian instinctively begins singing.

Youth Rock Anthem

This actually helped him relax and took the blows he knew were coming.

In the dark, Caelian reflects on the teens' escape from Nexus and running through the dark woods. If he could have sung without getting shot he likely would have. As it was, he was trying to avoid tree trunks, branches and roots.

While still in the dark, "Caleb, I need to work on dealing with multiple threats and challenges. My father used to spar with me all the time. Since I knew it was just him and me, I was always more relaxed and the training injuries were minimalized because of it."

"Also, I find that obstacles come in a variety of forms. Ones I can move. Those I can run over or push down. And those that cannot be manipulated. When we were fleeing Nexus, I avoided moving or pushing down the trees. Just wanted to make sure everyone made it out as quickly as possible."

"Obstacles. Maybe that is why my father pushed so hard for me to compete in American Ninja and other similar events."

“Margaret Atwood?” Tamar asked, tilting her head. “No, Ah don’t think Ah’ve heard of her. What’s she write?”

Kat actually has to pause and re-group from that one. "Well, she writes a lot of novels, but her best-known one is called The Handmaid's Tale. I've also read Mad Addam, but I know there's a lot more out there. The library in my town was kind of sh--kind of crap."

CAELIAN

“We can run you through some obstacle courses,” Caleb told Caelian, stepping back and letting the lights come back. “And we can do multiple opponents, too.” He pulled out the control pad and tapped in some instructions. Three holographic thugs appeared. “The key to fighting multiple opponents is to be aware of them, and then isolate. You can’t fight two people at once. But you can put one on the ground, or knock them back, and give your attention to the other for a few seconds. You’ll also want to be more brutal. Make them think twice about jumping back in. Krav maga will work well.”

KAT

Tamar smiled when Kat caught herself and kept from swearing. She was learning. “The Handmaid’s Tale sounds like something Longwood would write. Ah will check it out,” she told Kat. “We have an excellent library here. If there is a book ya’ll want, let me know and Ah’ll fetch it for ya while ya’ll’re stuck down heah. Once ya’ll’re up on campus, ya’ll will have free reign.”

Kat smiles. "I'll take you up on that, then. I'd like a copy of Dancing Girls--it was her first collection of short stories. I heard there's two editions--try to get a printing based on the 1977 version, if you can, please. Thanks!"

"Why not just CALL?" Constance demanded. "Talk? Why keep your distance? Do you even know how hard it's been on mom since dad died? On me? You're not needed because I have powers! You're needed because..." she threw up her arms and looked away. "Well, I was going to say because you're family, but I don't even know."

She heaved a sigh, then glanced back at him.

"Also, you can change the past. I do it all the time. I mean, I don't know how to do it yet, but at some point I must have learned, because I keep...popping up, helping myself out."

CHANCE

Dr. Helios gave Constance a sad smile. “Yes, hello, I’m the great-grandfather that died when you were a young woman. I’m back!” he said, with mild exaggeration. “It isn’t so easy, Constance,” he told the teen. “And it is...difficult, to watch the ones you care about age and die.” He looked away wistfully.

“As I said, changing the past is difficult, Constance. What you are experiencing is...nudging. You can’t change the big things. Even the nudging you are doing can be dangerous, and it risks catching the attention of the temporal antibodies.”

"Just because it isn't easy doesn't mean you don't try," she shot back, not really appreciating the snark. Not that she had any high horse to climb on where that was concerned, but being a teenager meant not having to be consistent.

Then she frowned and added, "Wait, what temporal antibodies? Does future me know about them? Except...you're telling me now, so she must."

CHANCE

Dr. Helios nodded to his many-greats-granddaughter. “Time does not like to be changed,” he explained to Chance. “It finds ways to...correct itself. Are you familiar with H. G. Wells’ Time Machine?” he asked. “How the main character continually tries to change the fate of his fiance after she is killed, only to watch her die in some other way each time?” he asked Chance. “But the universe also has more...active means of preventing events from changing. Perhaps you are more familiar with a more recent movie, The Matrix, and Mr. Smith. Well, the universe has its own Mr. Smith in the temporal antibodies. Whenever there is an anomaly in the timestream, like a traveler going back in time, they will be around, watching, ready to intervene if there are attempts to change the past too much. You might catch one in the corner of your eye when your future self visits you,” he told Chance. “But your future self is really just ghosting through the timestream, not actually traveling. She can’t really effect anything other than you, offering you an alternate choice. Since you haven’t made the decision yet, time is still not firmly set. LIke Jello. It’s a...gray area.”

Constance listened to that, noting the pop culture references. Helios didn't talk like an 'old person,' she realized distantly. It was kind of weird.

"But, like, I know that right? The other me? I wouldn't be doing it if it was...dangerous?"

She didn't even have to finish that sentence before she knew the answer. Damnit. Quickly she shifted gears.

"What happens if we go too far? Is it like, instant death? Written warning? Time off with good behavior? How much wiggle room do I have?"

CHANCE

Dr. Helios leveled his gaze at Constance. “The antibodies will try and kill you,” he said. “Oh, not instant death. You can try and fight them. But I wouldn’t recommend it. Like in the Matrix, your best option is to run. Get away from them and return to your own time as quickly as possible,” he told her.

"That's easy enough...I don't even know how to leave my time," Chance pointed out. "Not yet at least. So once I go back to my time, everything's cool then? They don't hunt us down?"

She paused and added, "What do they look like?"

CHANCE

“Perhaps we will have to take a field trip sometime,” Dr. Helios told Constance with a smile. “No, they won’t hunt you down once you are back in your own time. They tend to look like an era’s law enforcement, with a generic face. And all the same face,” he told his granddaughter. “They aren’t individuals. A sort of an image of a culture’s shared consciousness so they can move without causing temporal disruption.”

"A culture's? Any one culture? Like...ugh. I don't feel like I even know what to ask."

Constance fell silent for a second and sat back in her chair.

Then she said, "I could really have used your help you know. Earlier. I guess it's too late now, time travel or not, but still."

She got up out of the chair.

"At some point, you'll have to show me what you can do."

CHANCE

Dr. Helios gave Constance a kindly smile. “That is why I brought you to my school, Constance,” he told his great-granddaughter. “Because I knew you would need special guidance with your abilities. Any time you have questions, feel free to come to me,” he told her as she left.
